¹ "Why are not times kept by Shaddai, and why do not those who know him see his days? ² They* remove border stones; they seize flocks, and they pasture them. ³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge. ⁴ They thrust the poor off the road; the needy of the earth hide themselves together.* ⁵ "Look, like wild donkeys in the desert they* go out to their labor as searchers for the prey; the wilderness is* _⌊their_⌋* food for the young. ⁶ They reap their* fodder in the field, and they glean in the vineyard of the wicked. ⁷ They spend the night naked, _⌊without_⌋* clothing, and they have no garment in the cold. ⁸ They are wet from the rainstorm of the mountains,* and they cling to the rock _⌊without_⌋* refuge. ⁹ "They* snatch the orphan from the breast, and they take a pledge against the needy.* ¹⁰ They* go about naked, without clothing, and hungry, they carry the sheaves.* ¹¹ Between their terraces they press out oil; they tread the presses, but* they are thirsty. ¹² From the city people groan, and the throat* of the wounded cries for help; yet* God does not _⌊regard it as unseemly_⌋.* ¹³ "Those are among the ones rebelling against the light; they do not recognize his ways, and they do not stay in his paths. ¹⁴ _⌊At dusk_⌋* the murderer rises; he kills the needy and the poor, and in the night he is like a* thief. ¹⁵ And the eye of the adulterer waits for dusk, saying, _⌊'No eye will see me,'_⌋* and he places a covering on his face. ¹⁶ He digs through houses in the darkness; by day they shut themselves in— they do not know the light ¹⁷ because morning likewise is to them deep darkness; indeed, they know about the terrors of deep darkness. ¹⁸ "He himself* is swift on the water's surface; their portion is cursed in the land. _⌊No one turns toward the path of their vineyards_⌋.* ¹⁹ Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters, like Sheol snatches away those* who have sinned. ²⁰ The womb forgets him. The maggot feasts on him until he is no longer remembered, and wickedness is broken like a* tree. ²¹ He feeds on the barren, who does not have a child, and does no good to the widow. ²² Yet* he* carries off the tyrants by his strength; if he rises up, then* he* cannot be certain of life.* ²³ He* gives security to him, and he is* supported, but* his eyes are upon their ways. ²⁴ They are exalted a little while, then* _⌊they are gone_⌋.* And they are brought low; they are cut off like all others, and like the heads of grain they wither away. ²⁵ "And if it is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my word to nothing?"

⁴ For _⌊within seven days_⌋* I will send rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. And I will blot out all the living creatures that I have made from upon the face of the ground."

¹⁷ Then Yahweh said, "Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am going to do?

²⁰ Then Yahweh said, "Because the outcry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great and because their sin is very _⌊serious_⌋,* ²¹ I will go down and I will see. Have they done altogether according to its cry of distress which has come to me? If not, I will know."

¹⁰ And those who know your name will trust in you, for you do not forsake those who seek you, O Yahweh.

¹⁵ My times* are in your hand. Deliver me from the hand of my enemies and from those who pursue me.

¹⁰ Prolong your loyal love to those who know you, and your righteousness to the upright of heart.

¹⁶ When I thought about how to understand this, it was troubling in my eyes ¹⁷ until I went into the sanctuary of God. Then I understood their fate. ¹⁸ Surely you set them on slippery places. You cause them to fall onto ruin.* ¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors.

¹⁷ So I said _⌊to myself_⌋,* "God will surely judge the righteous and the wicked, for he has appointed* a time of judgment for every deed and every work."

⁶ For there is a proper time and right procedure for every matter, even though the trouble of man weighs heavy upon him. ⁷ Surely no one knows what will be, so who can tell anyone what will happen?

¹¹ I looked again and saw under the sun that the race does not belong to the swift, the battle does not belong to the mighty, food does not belong to the wise, wealth does not belong to the intelligent, and success* does not belong to the skillful, for time and chance befalls all of them. ¹² For man does not know his time. Just as fish are caught in a cruel net and like birds who are seized in a snare, so also _⌊humans_⌋* are ensnared at a cruel time when it falls suddenly upon them.

¹² For there is a day for Yahweh of hosts against all of the proud and the lofty and against all that is lifted up and humble,*

²² The small one shall become a tribe, and the smallest one a mighty nation.
I am Yahweh; I will hasten it in its time."

¹ You will be in the right, O Yahweh, when I complain to you. Even so, let me speak my claims with you. Why does the way of the wicked succeed? All those who deal treacherously with treachery are at ease. ² Not only do you plant them, they take root. They grow, but also they produce fruit. You are near in their mouths, but far from their _⌊inmost beings_⌋.* ³ But you, O Yahweh, you know me, you see me, and you test that my heart is with you. Tear them apart like sheep for the slaughtering, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.

¹⁰ For that day is to the Lord Yahweh of hosts a day of retribution, to take revenge on his foes. And the sword will devour and be satisfied, and it will drink its fill of their blood, for a sacrifice is for the Lord Yahweh of hosts in the land of the north by the Euphrates River.

²¹ And he changes the times and the seasons, and he deposes kings and he sets up kings; he gives wisdom* to wise men and knowledge to men who know understanding.

³⁸ For as in the days* before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered into the ark.

²² because these are days of vengeance, so that all the things that are written can be fulfilled. ²³ Woe to those _⌊who are pregnant_⌋* and to those who are nursing their babies* in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people, ²⁴ and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations,* and Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

³ Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

⁷ But he said to them, "It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority.

²⁶ And he made from one man every nation of humanity to live on all the face of the earth, determining their fixed times and the fixed boundaries of their habitation,

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹ Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need of anything to be written to you,

¹ Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the last times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,

¹⁵ which he will make known in his own time, the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of those who reign as kings and Lord of those who rule as lords,

³ And in greediness they will exploit you with false words, whose condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

⁷ But by the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly people. ⁸ Now, dear friends, do not let this one thing escape your notice, that one day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.

¹⁴ "You shall not move the boundary marker of your neighbor that _⌊former generations_⌋* set up on your property in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you to take possession of it.

¹⁷ 'Cursed be the one who moves the boundary marker of his neighbor.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'

¹⁵ Then* the Sabeans _⌊attacked_⌋,* and they took them, and they slew the servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋.* But* I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

¹⁷ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three divisions, and they made a raid on the camels, and they carried them away, and they struck your servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋,* but I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

⁶ "A person* shall not take* a pair of millstones or an upper millstone, for _⌊he is taking necessities of life as a pledge_⌋.*

¹⁰ "When you make a loan to your neighbor, a loan of any kind, you shall not go into his house _⌊to take his pledge_⌋.* ¹¹ You shall wait outside, and the man to whom you are lending, he shall bring the pledge outside to you. ¹² And if he is a needy man, you shall not sleep in his pledge.* ¹³ You shall certainly return the pledge to him _⌊as the sun sets_⌋,* so that he may sleep in his cloak and may bless you, and it shall be considered righteousness _⌊on your behalf_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God.

¹⁷ You shall not subvert the rights of an alien or an orphan, and you shall not take as pledge the garment of a widow. ¹⁸ And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that Yahweh your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this commandment. ¹⁹ "When* you reap your harvest in your field and you forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not return to get it, for it shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow, so that Yahweh your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. ²⁰ When you beat off the fruit of your olive trees you shall not search through the branches afterward, for it* shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow. ²¹ When you harvest grapes, you shall not glean your vineyards _⌊again_⌋;* it* shall be for the alien, for the orphan, and for the widow.

³ Here I am! Testify against me before Yahweh and before his anointed one! Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe, that I may shut my eyes _⌊regarding_⌋* him?-then I will restore it to you."

⁶ "Indeed, you have required a pledge from your family for nothing, and you have stripped off the clothes of the naked. ⁷ You have given no water for the weary to drink, and you withheld food from the hungry. ⁸ And the land _⌊belongs to the man of power_⌋,* and _⌊the favored_⌋* lives in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed.

¹⁶ "If I have withheld the desire of the poor from them, or* I have caused the widow's eyes to fail, ¹⁷ or I have eaten my morsel _⌊alone_⌋,* and the orphan has not eaten from it

Blessed is the one who has regard for the poor; in the day of disaster, Yahweh delivers him.

¹⁶ because he did not remember to show loyal love, but he pursued anyone,* poor or needy or brokenhearted, to slay them.

¹⁶ He who oppresses the poor in order to enrich himself, or gives to the rich, _⌊will come to poverty_⌋.*

¹² When the righteous triumphs, great is the glory, but with the rising of the wicked, a person will be hidden.

²⁸ With the rising of the wicked, humankind will be hidden, and with their perishing, the righteous will multiply.

¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are swords, and its jawbones, knives, in order to devour the poor from the earth* and the needy from humankind.

² to guide the needy away from legal claims,* and to rob the justice from the poor of my people, to make widows their spoil; and they plunder orphans.

¹² He oppresses the needy and the poor, and _⌊he commits robbery_⌋,* and he does not return a pledge for a loan, and he lifts his eyes to the idols so he does a detestable thing.

¹⁸ Because his father _⌊oppressed severely_⌋;* _⌊he stole from his brother_⌋;* that which is not good he did in the midst of his people, and look! He will die through* his guilt.

²⁹ They severely oppress the people of the land, and _⌊they committed robbery_⌋,* and they mistreated the needy and the poor, and they oppressed the alien _⌊without_⌋* justice.

⁷ Those who trample the heads of the powerless into the dust of the ground and turn aside the way of the destitute, a man and his father _⌊have sexual relations with_⌋* the same girl, so that they profane my holy name.

⁴ Hear this, those who trample on the poor and who annihilate the afflicted of the land, ⁵ saying, "When will the new moon be over, so that we can sell grain? And the Sabbath, so that we can open the grain bins, that we can make the ephah small and make the shekel large, and can practice deceit with a set of scales of deceit? ⁶ _⌊That we can_⌋* buy the powerless with silver and the poor for the sake of a pair of sandals, and we can sell the waste of the grain?"

¹ Woe to those who plan wickedness and evil deeds upon their beds! In the light of the morning they did it, because they have power in their hands. ² They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and they take them away. They oppress a man and his house; a man and his inheritance.

⁴ Behold, the wages that were held back by you from the workers who reap your fields cry out, and the cries of the reapers have come to the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived self-indulgently on the earth* and have lived luxuriously. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned, you have murdered the righteous person; he does not resist you.

¹² And he shall be a wild donkey of a man, his hand will be against everyone, and the hand of everyone will be against him, and he will live _⌊in hostility with all his brothers_⌋."*

⁴⁰ But by your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother. But it shall be that when free yourself you shall tear off his yoke from your neck.

⁶ The tents of the destroyers are at peace, and there is security for those who provoke God, for those whom God brings into his hand.*

⁵ "Who has sent forth the wild ass free? And who has released the wild donkey's bonds, ⁶ to which I have given the wilderness as its house and the salt flat as its dwelling place? ⁷ It scorns the city's turmoil; it does not hear the driver's shouts.

²³ Humankind goes out to its work, and to its labor until evening.

¹⁶ For they will not sleep if they have not done wrong, and they are robbed of their sleep if they do not cause stumbling.

²⁴ A wild ass accustomed to the desert,* in the desire of her soul. She gasps for wind in her rutting time. Who can quell* her lust? All those who seek her will not grow weary, in her month they will find her.

⁶ Because they are kindled* like an oven, their heart burns within them; all night their anger _⌊smolders_⌋,* in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.

⁹ For they have gone up to Assyria, a wild donkey alone to itself; Ephraim has sold itself for lovers.

¹ Woe to those who plan wickedness and evil deeds upon their beds! In the light of the morning they did it, because they have power in their hands.

³ Her officials in her midst are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave nothing until the morning.

²⁸ Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's residence. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the governor's residence so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the Passover.

¹² And when it* was day, the Jews made a conspiracy and* bound themselves under a curse, saying they would* neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.

³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.*

⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.*

³ And whenever Israel sowed seed, the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east would come up against them. ⁴ They would camp against them and destroy the produce of the land _⌊as far as_⌋* Gaza; they left no produce in Israel, or sheep, ox, or donkey. ⁵ For they, their livestock, and their tents would come up like a great number of locusts; they and their camels could not be counted; they came into the land and devoured it. ⁶ Israel was very poor because of the presence of the Midianites,* and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh.

¹⁵ You yourself will sow, but you will not reap; you will tread olives, but you will not anoint yourself with oil; you will tread grapes, but you will not drink wine.

⁴⁰ There I was, during the day the heat consumed me, and the cold by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes.

²⁶ If indeed you require the cloak of your neighbor as a pledge, you will return it to him at sundown, ²⁷ because it is his only garment; it is his cloak for his skin. In what will he sleep? _⌊And_⌋* when he cries out to me, I will hear, because I am gracious.

⁷ Is it not to break your bread for the hungry? You must bring _⌊home_⌋* the poor, the homeless. When you see the naked, you must cover him, and you must not hide yourself from your _⌊relatives_⌋.*

³¹ Then the church throughout all of Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being strengthened. And living in the fear of the Lord and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it was increasing in numbers.*

² I was asleep but* my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved knocking!* "Open to me, my sister, my beloved, my dove, my perfect one! For my head is full of dew, _⌊my hair drenched from the moist night air_⌋."*

⁵ The ones who eat delicacies, they are ruined in the streets; the ones nurtured in purple lie on piles of trash.

³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy, wandering about on deserts and mountains and in caves and in holes in the ground.

¹ A certain woman from the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead. Now you know that your servant was a fearer of Yahweh, but the creditor came to take two of my children for himself as slaves.

⁵ Now our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our sons are like their sons. Look, we are subduing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and there are some from our daughters being molested. _⌊We are powerless_⌋,* and our fields and vineyards belong to others."

¹¹ Therefore, because you trample on the poor and you take a grain tax from them, you built houses of dressed stone, but you will not live in them. You built vineyards of delightfulness, but you will not drink their wine. ¹² For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous, you foes of the righteous, those who take a bribe, and _⌊those who_⌋* push aside the poor ones in the gate!

⁴ "You shall not muzzle an ox _⌊when he is threshing_⌋.*

¹³ Woe to the one who builds his house without righteousness, and his upper rooms without justice. His fellow countryman, he works for nothing, and he does not give to him his wages.*

⁴ Behold, the wages that were held back by you from the workers who reap your fields cry out, and the cries of the reapers have come to the ears of the Lord of hosts.

¹³ And the Egyptians ruthlessly compelled the _⌊Israelites_⌋* to work. ¹⁴ And they made their lives bitter with hard work with mortar and with bricks and with all sorts of work in the field—with all their work in which they ruthlessly enslaved them.

²³ _⌊And then_⌋* during those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* groaned because of the work, and they cried out, and their cry for help because of the work went up to God. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob,

²⁷ because it is his only garment; it is his cloak for his skin. In what will he sleep? _⌊And_⌋* when he cries out to me, I will hear, because I am gracious.

¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel.

²³ When the whip* kills suddenly, he mocks at the despair of the innocent.

⁵ "Because of the oppression of the afflicted, because of the groaning of the poor, now I will rise up," Yahweh says. "I shall put them in the safety for which they* long."

²¹ These things you have done, and I have been silent; You imagined that I was just like you. I will rebuke you and present an argument before your eyes.

²⁶ because they persecute those whom you, yourself, have struck, and they tell of the pain of those you have wounded.

²² for I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

¹ I looked again, and I saw all the oppression that occurs under the sun.
_⌊I saw the tears of the oppressed— no one comforts them! Those who oppress them are powerful— no one can comfort them_⌋!*

¹¹ Because sentence against an evil deed is not carried out quickly, the heart of _⌊humans_⌋* fills up within them to do evil. ¹² Although the sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I also know that it will be good for those who fear God—because they fear _⌊his presence_⌋.*

⁵ And now what do I have here?"_⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "for my people is taken without cause. Its rulers howl," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh—"and my name is reviled continually, all day.

¹⁷ You have wearied Yahweh with your words, but you ask, "With what have we wearied him?" You have done so _⌊when you say_⌋,* "Everyone who does evil is good in the _⌊sight_⌋* of Yahweh, and in them he delights," or "Where is the God of justice?"

¹⁵ And now we are calling the arrogant blessed! Not only do those who do wickedness prosper; they also test God and they escape!'"

⁴ Or do you despise the wealth of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? ⁵ But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

¹⁵ And regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom that was given to him,

¹¹ My foot has held on to his steps; I have kept his way, and I have not turned aside. ¹² From the commandment of his lips, indeed* I have not departed; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily food.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked ones is like deep darkness; they do not know what they stumble over.

⁴⁷ And that slave who knew the will of his master and did not prepare or do according to his will _⌊will be given a severe beating_⌋.* ⁴⁸ But the one who did not know and did things deserving blows _⌊will be given a light beating_⌋.* And from everyone to whom much has been given, much will be demanded, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will ask him for even more.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment: that the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For everyone who practices evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed.

³¹ Then Jesus said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you continue in my word you are truly my disciples,

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father! That one was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth, because truth is not in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own nature,* because he is a liar and the father _⌊of lies_⌋.*

³⁹ And Jesus said,* "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind!" ⁴⁰ Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and said to him, "We are not also blind, are we?"* ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

³⁵ So Jesus said to them, "Yet a little time the light is with you! Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness does not overtake you! And the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

⁴⁰ "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they see with their* eyes and understand with their* hearts and turn, and I heal them."*

⁶ If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and dries up, and they gather them and throw them* into the fire, and they are burned.

²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin. But now they do not have a valid excuse for their sin. ²³ The one who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have both seen and hated both me and my Father.

³² who, although they* know the requirements of God, that those who do such things are worthy of death, not only do they do the same things, but also they approve of those who do them.

¹⁷ But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God ¹⁸ and know his will and approve the things that are superior, because you* are instructed by the law, ¹⁹ and are confident that you yourself are a guide of the blind, a light of those in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth in the law. ²¹ Therefore, the one who teaches someone else, do you not teach yourself? The one who preaches not to steal, do you steal? ²² The one who says not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? The one who abhors idols, do you rob temples? ²³ Who boast in the law, by the transgression of the law you dishonor God!* ²⁴ For just as it is written, "The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."*

¹¹ there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. ¹² All have turned aside together; they have become worthless; There is no one who practices kindness; there is not even one.* ¹³ Their throat is an opened grave; they deceive with their tongues; the venom of asps is under their lips,* ¹⁴ whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.* ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood; ¹⁶ destruction and distress are in their paths, ¹⁷ and they have not known the way of peace.*

¹⁰ and with every unrighteous deception against those who are perishing, in place of which they did not accept the love of the truth, so that they would be saved. ¹¹ And because of this, God sends them _⌊a powerful delusion_⌋* so that they will believe the lie, ¹² in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth, but delighted in unrighteousness.

¹⁷ Therefore, to the one who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

²⁰ For if, after they* have escaped from the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord* and Savior Jesus Christ, and they are again entangled in these things and succumb to them, the last state has become worse for them than the first. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than having known it, to turn back from the holy commandment that had been delivered to them. ²² The statement of the true proverb has happened to them, "A dog returns to its own vomit,"* and "A sow, after* washing herself, returns* to wallowing in the mud."*

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us. But they went out*, in order that it might be shown that all of them are not of us.

⁶ And the angels who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling place, he has kept in eternal bonds under deep gloom for the judgment of the great day,

¹⁴ And it happened in the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab, and he sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ He had written in the letter, "Put Uriah in the front, in the face of the fiercest fighting, then draw back from behind him so that he may be struck down and die." ¹⁶ _⌊When Joab was besieging_⌋* the city, he put Uriah toward the place which he knew _⌊there were valiant warriors_⌋.* ¹⁷ The men of the city came out and fought with Joab. Some from the army from the servants of David fell; Uriah the Hittite also died.

⁸ He sits in ambush in villages; in the hiding places he kills the innocent. His eyes _⌊lurk_⌋* for the helpless. ⁹ He lies in ambush _⌊secretly,_⌋* like a lion in a thicket. He lies in ambush to seize the poor; he seizes the poor by catching him in his net. ¹⁰ He is crushed;* he is bowed down;* so* the helpless host* falls by his _⌊might_⌋.*

³⁹ But understand this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into.

⁷ Therefore do not be sharers* with them, ⁸ for you were formerly darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live like children of light ⁹ (for the fruit of the light is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), ¹⁰ trying to learn what is well-pleasing to the Lord. ¹¹ And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even expose them.

² for you yourselves well know that the day of the Lord is coming in the same way as a thief in the night.

³ Therefore remember how you have received and heard, and observe it, and repent. If therefore you are not on the alert, I will come like a thief, and you will never know at what hour I will come against you.

¹⁴ So she removed the clothes of her widowhood and covered herself with the veil and disguised herself. And she sat at the entrance to Eynayim, which is on the way to Timnah, for she saw that Shelah was grown but she had not been given to him as a wife. ¹⁵ And Judah saw her and reckoned her to be a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

¹⁴ "You shall not commit adultery.

⁴ Then David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) And she returned to her house. ⁵ The woman became pregnant, and she sent and told David, and she said, "I am pregnant." ⁶ So David sent to Joab, "Send Uriah the Hittite to me." So Joab sent Uriah to David. ⁷ Uriah came to him, and David asked _⌊how Joab and the army fared and how the war was going_⌋.* ⁸ David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet." So Uriah went out from the king's house, and a gift from the king went out after him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king's house with all the servants of his master and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ They told David, "Uriah did not go down to his house." David said to Uriah, "Are you not coming from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?" ¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are living in the booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping on the surface of the open field; and I, shall I go to my house to eat and to drink and to sleep with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I surely will not do this thing." ¹² David said to Uriah, "Remain here _⌊today_⌋,* and tomorrow I will send you away." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem on that day and the next. ¹³ David invited him, and he ate and drank in his presence _⌊so that he became drunk_⌋,* and he went out in the evening to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house.

¹² Though you did this in secret, I will do this thing before all of Israel _⌊in broad daylight_⌋!'"*

¹³ And you ask, 'What does God know? Can he judge through deep gloom? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he does not see; and he walks about on the dome of heaven.'

¹¹ He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He has hidden his face. He never sees."

¹⁸ When you see a thief, then you are pleased with him, and your association is with adulterers.

¹¹ And they say, "How does God know?" and, "Does the Most High have knowledge?"

⁷ while* they say, "Yah* does not see," and "The God of Jacob does not pay attention."

³² He who commits adultery with a woman lacks _⌊sense_⌋,* he destroys himself* who does it. ³³ A wound and dishonor he will find, and his disgrace will not be wiped out. ³⁴ For jealousy is the fury of a husband, and he will not show restraint on the day of revenge. ³⁵ He will not accept _⌊any compensation_⌋,* and he will not be willing, though the bribe is large.

⁹ at twilight, at the day's evening, in the midst of night and the darkness. ¹⁰ Then behold! A woman comes to meet him with the garment of a prostitute* and _⌊a secret heart_⌋.*

¹² And he said to me, "Have you seen, son of man,* what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in the inner rooms of his idol, for they are saying, 'Yahweh is not seeing us; Yahweh has abandoned the land.'"

⁹ And he said to me, "The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is _⌊exceedingly_⌋* great, and the land is filled with bloodguilt, and the city is full of injustice. For they say Yahweh abandoned the land, and _⌊Yahweh does not see_⌋.*

² " 'If a thief is found in the act of breaking in and he is struck and he dies, there is not bloodguilt for him. ³ (If the sun has risen over him, there is bloodguilt for him. He will make full restitution. If _⌊he does not have enough_⌋,* he will be sold for his theft.

¹³ "Those are among the ones rebelling against the light; they do not recognize his ways, and they do not stay in his paths.

¹² "Have you _⌊ever in your life_⌋* commanded the morning? Have you made the dawn know its place, ¹³ to take hold of the earth's skirts so that* the wicked might be shaken off from it?

⁵ Before their eyes dig through for yourself,* through the wall, and you must bring the baggage out through it. ⁶ Before their eyes, on your* shoulder, you must lift up the baggage in the dusk, and your face you must cover, so that you may not see the land, for I make you as a sign to the house of Israel." ⁷ And I did _⌊just as_⌋* I was commanded; my baggage, like the baggage of an exile, I brought out by day, and in the evening I dug through for myself* into* the wall with my hand in the dusk; I brought the baggage on my shoulder; I carried it before their eyes.

¹² And the prince who is in the midst of them, on his shoulder he will carry the baggage in the dusk, and* he will go out; _⌊the wall will be dug through_⌋* to bring him through it; and he will cover his face so that he will* not see the land with his* eye.

¹⁹ "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and consuming insect* destroy and where thieves break in and steal,

⁴³ But understand this: that if the master of the house had known what watch of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.

²⁰ For everyone who practices evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds be exposed.

¹¹ And do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even expose them. ¹² For it is shameful even to speak about the things being done by them in secret, ¹³ but all things exposed by the light are made visible,

⁵ Let darkness and deep shadow claim it; let clouds* settle on it; let them* terrify it with the blackness* of day.

²⁶ As the shame of a thief when he is caught in the act, so the house of Israel will be ashamed. They, their kings, their officials, and their priests, and their prophets.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, in order that each one may receive back the things through the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad. ¹¹ Therefore, because we* know the fear of the Lord, we are attempting to persuade people, but we are revealed to God, and I hope to be revealed in your consciences.

¹⁶ And they said to the mountains and to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, ¹⁷ because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

¹⁶ "You shall* be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field. ¹⁷ "Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ "You shall be cursed _⌊when you come in_⌋,* and you shall be cursed _⌊when you go out_⌋.* ²⁰ "Yahweh will send upon you* the curse,* the panic,* and the threat* _⌊in everything that you undertake_⌋,* _⌊until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* the evil of your deeds in that* you have forsaken me.

²⁶ They go by like papyrus skiffs, like an eagle swoops down on its prey.

¹⁶ who were snatched away _⌊before their time_⌋,* whose foundation was washed away by a current?

⁷ Let them run away like water that runs off. When he bends the bow, let his arrows be as though they were cut off.*

²² Let their table before them be a trap, and their times of peace a snare.

¹⁸ Surely you set them on slippery places. You cause them to fall onto ruin.* ¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors. ²⁰ Like a dream upon awakening, when you wake up, O Lord, you will despise their fleeting form.*

³³ The curse of Yahweh is on the house of the wicked, and the abode of the righteous ones he blesses.

¹⁰ Cross over your own land like the Nile, daughter of Tarshish; there is no longer a harbor.*

² If you will not listen, and if you will not _⌊take it to heart_⌋* to give glory to my name," says Yahweh of hosts, "then I will send the curse on you, and I will curse your blessings; moreover I have already cursed them because _⌊you are not taking it to heart_⌋.*

¹⁵ My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis* they flow away, ¹⁶ which are growing dark because of ice upon them, it will pile up snow. ¹⁷ In time they dry up, they disappear; when it is hot, they vanish from their place.

¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol.

²³ This one dies _⌊in full prosperity_⌋,* _⌊completely_⌋* at ease and secure.

³² When* he is brought to the grave, then* someone stands guard over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone will follow after him, and _⌊before_⌋* him _⌊they are innumerable_⌋.* ³⁴ So* how will you comfort me with emptiness, when* fraud is left in your answers?"

¹⁴ Like sheep they are destined to Sheol; death will shepherd them. But the upright will rule over them in the morning, and their forms will be for Sheol to consume, far from his lofty abode.

⁸ Let them be like a snail that melts away as it goes; like the stillborn of woman that do not see the sun. ⁹ Before your pots can feel the heat of a thornbush, whether green or _⌊dry_⌋,* he will sweep it away.*

² As smoke is driven off, you will drive them off. As wax melts before fire, the wicked will perish before God.

³² By his evildoing, the wicked will be overthrown, and the righteous will find refuge in his death.

⁴ Whoever is joined* to all the living has hope. After all, even a live dog is better than a dead lion! ⁵ For the living know that they will die, but the dead do not know anything. They no longer have a reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. ⁶ What they loved and hated, as well as what they desired, has already perished. They no longer have any share in what is done under the sun.

²⁰ But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your life* is demanded from you, and the things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to _⌊Abraham's side_⌋.* And the rich man also died and was buried.

⁷ "Indeed, there is hope for a tree: if it is cut down, then* it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not cease; ⁸ though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the dust, ⁹ at* the scent of water it will bud, and it will put forth branches like a young plant. ¹⁰ "But* a man dies, and he dwindles away; thus* a human being passes away, and where is he?*

¹⁴ if I call to the pit, 'You are my father,' to the maggot, 'You are my mother or* my sister,'

¹⁶ His roots dry up _⌊below_⌋,* and its branches* wither away above.* ¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street.

²⁶ And after my skin has been thus destroyed, but* from* my flesh I will see God,

⁷ The memory of righteousness is like a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

¹⁰ Meanwhile, I saw the wicked being honorably buried, but those who came and went from the holy place were forgotten in the city, even though they had done so. This also is vanity!

¹⁴ The dead do not live; dead spirits do not rise because you have punished and destroyed them, and you have destroyed all memory of them.

¹⁴ He cried _⌊aloud_⌋* and so he said:
"Cut down the tree and chop off its branches; shake off its foliage and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it, and the birds from its branches.

¹⁰ Already now the ax is positioned at the root of the trees; therefore every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

⁶ (Now her rival wife would provoke her severely in order to upset her because Yahweh had closed her womb.) ⁷ And so he used to do* year after year; _⌊whenever_⌋* she went up to the house of Yahweh, she* would provoke her so that she* would weep and would not eat.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed.

³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge.

¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

¹⁶ "If I have withheld the desire of the poor from them, or* I have caused the widow's eyes to fail, ¹⁷ or I have eaten my morsel _⌊alone_⌋,* and the orphan has not eaten from it ¹⁸ (for from my childhood he* _⌊grew up with_⌋* me like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided her*),

⁸ And Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered and separated among the peoples in all of the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from every other people, and they do not _⌊observe_⌋* the laws of the king; it is not appropriate for the king to tolerate them. ⁹ If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will pay* ten thousand talents* of silver to those who do the job, to bring to the treasury of the king." ¹⁰ So the king removed his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

⁴ Then the other administrators and satraps _⌊began to seek_⌋* to find a pretext against Daniel _⌊in connection with the kingdom_⌋,* but they were not able to find any pretext and _⌊corruption_⌋* _⌊because_⌋* he was trustworthy, and no* negligence or _⌊corruption_⌋* _⌊could be found in him_⌋.* ⁵ Then these men _⌊said_⌋,* "We will not find any pretext* against this Daniel unless we find it in connection with the law of his God." ⁶ So the administrators and the satraps conspired _⌊with respect to_⌋* the king and so they said to him, "Darius, O king, live _⌊forever_⌋!* ⁷ All of the administrators of the kingdom, and the prefects, the satraps, the counselors and the governors took counsel and have agreed to establish an edict of the king and to enforce a decree that _⌊whoever_⌋* will seek a prayer from any god or human except from you for up to thirty days will be thrown into _⌊the lion pit_⌋.* ⁸ Now, O king, establish the edict and you must sign the document so that it cannot be changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians which cannot be revoked." ⁹ _⌊So_⌋* the king, Darius, signed the writing and the interdict.*

¹² From this point on Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jews shouted, saying, "If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar! Everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar!" ¹³ So Pilate, when he* heard these words, brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat, in the place called The Stone Pavement (but Gabbatha in Aramaic). ¹⁴ (Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, "Behold your king!" ¹⁵ Then those shouted, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests replied, "We do not have a king except Caesar!" ¹⁶ So then he handed him over to them in order that he could be crucified.

¹³ And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet three unclean spirits like frogs. ¹⁴ For they are the spirits of demons performing signs that go out to the kings of the whole inhabited world, to gather them for the battle of the great day of God the All-Powerful.

² with whom the kings of the earth committed sexual immorality, and those who live on the earth became drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality."

¹¹ For he knows _⌊those who are worthless_⌋;* _⌊when he sees_⌋* iniquity, _⌊he will not consider it_⌋.*

¹³ Why does the wicked treat God with contempt? He says in his heart, "You will not call me to account." ¹⁴ But you have seen; indeed you have noted trouble and grief to take it into your hand. The helpless abandons himself upon you; you have been the helper for the orphan.

⁴ Yahweh is in his holy temple; Yahweh is in the heavens on his throne. His eyelids see; they test the children of humankind. ⁵ Yahweh tests the righteous, but the wicked and the lover of violence his soul hates.

³ because I envied the boastful when I saw the well-being* of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pains up to their death, and their bodies are _⌊healthy_⌋.* ⁵ They do not have _⌊ordinary trouble_⌋,* and they are not plagued as other people.* ⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace; an outfit of violence covers them. ⁷ Their eye bulges from fat.* Imaginings overflow their heart. ⁸ They mock and speak maliciously of oppression; they speak as though from on high. ⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue roams the earth. ¹⁰ Therefore his people turn there,* and abundant waters are slurped up by them. ¹¹ And they say, "How does God know?" and, "Does the Most High have knowledge?" ¹² See, these are the wicked, and they increase wealth, ever carefree.

²¹ For before the eyes of Yahweh are _⌊human ways_⌋,* and all his paths he examines.

³ In every place, the eyes of Yahweh keep watch over the evil and the good.

²¹ If your enemy is hungry, feed him bread, and if thirsty, let him drink water. ²² For coals of fire you will heap upon his head, and Yahweh will reward you. ²³ The wind of the north produces rain, and a backbiting tongue, angry faces.

⁸ Do not be surprised if you see the poor being oppressed with violence or do not see justice and righteousness in the province. For one official is watched by a higher official, and there are even higher officials over them!

¹¹ Because sentence against an evil deed is not carried out quickly, the heart of _⌊humans_⌋* fills up within them to do evil.

⁸ For he says, "Are not my commanders altogether kings? ⁹ Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols* —and their images were _⌊greater than those of_⌋* Jerusalem and Samaria— ¹¹ shall I not do to Jerusalem and its idols what I have done to Samaria and her idols?"

¹² "Come, let me take wine, and let us carouse with intoxicating drink, and tomorrow will be like today, _⌊very great indeed_⌋."*

⁷ Yahweh has sworn by the pride of Jacob, "Surely I will never forget any of their deeds!

² If they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them, and even if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to see evil, and you are not able to look at wrongdoing.* Why do you look at the treacherous? Why are you silent when the wicked swallows up someone more righteous than him?

¹⁶ And he told a parable to them, saying, "The land of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. ¹⁷ And he reasoned to himself, saying, 'What should I do? For I do not have anywhere I can gather in my crops.' ¹⁸ And he said, 'I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and I will gather in there all my grain and possessions. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many possessions stored up for many years. Relax, eat, drink, celebrate!" ' ²⁰ But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your life* is demanded from you, and the things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

⁴⁵ But if that slave should say _⌊to himself_⌋,* 'My master is taking a long time to return,' and he begins to beat the male slaves and the female slaves and to eat and drink and get drunk,

³ Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of _⌊a pregnant woman_⌋*, and they will not possibly escape.

²³ And I will kill her children with deadly disease, and all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts, and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

²² Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked _⌊will be no more_⌋."*

²¹ His children may come to honor, but* he does not know it; or* they may become lowly, but* he does not realize it.*

⁵ that the rejoicing of the wicked is _⌊short_⌋,* and the joy of the godless _⌊lasts only a moment_⌋?*

¹⁰ And* yet a little while and the wicked will not be, and you will look carefully upon his place, but he will not be.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked acting violently and spreading himself out like a luxuriant native tree. ³⁶ Then he passed on* and behold, he was not. And I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors.

⁷ When the wicked flourish like grass and all the workers of evil blossom, it is so they can be destroyed forever.

⁵ And it shall be as _⌊when a reaper gathers_⌋* standing grain and he reaps grain with his arm, and it shall be like one who gathers ears of grain in the valley of Rephaim. ⁶ And gleanings will be left over in it, as _⌊when an olive tree is beaten_⌋,*
two or three ripe olive berries in the top of a branch, four or five on its fruitful branches,"
_⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, the God of Israel.

¹¹ For the sun rises with its burning heat and dries up the grass, and its flower falls off, and the beauty of its appearance is lost. So also the rich person in his pursuits* will wither away.

¹ Come now, you rich people, weep and cry aloud over the miseries that are coming upon you! ² Your wealth has rotted, and your clothing has become moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver have become corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you, and it will consume your flesh like fire. You have stored up treasure in the last days.

¹⁴ And I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud was seated one like a son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. ¹⁵ And another angel came out of the temple, crying out with a loud voice to the one seated on the cloud, "Send out your sickle and reap, because the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe!" ¹⁶ And the one seated on the cloud swung his sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped. ¹⁷ And another angel came out of the temple that is in heaven; he also had a sharp sickle. ¹⁸ And another angel who had authority over the fire went out from the altar, and he called out with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, saying, "Send out your sharp sickle and harvest the clusters of grapes from the vine of the earth, because its grapes are at their prime!" ¹⁹ And the angel swung his sickle into the earth and harvested the vine of the earth, and threw the grapes* into the great winepress of the wrath of God. ²⁰ And the winepress was stomped outside the city, and blood went out from the winepress up to the bridles of the horses, about one thousand six hundred stadia.*

²⁸ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* be prepared, turn to me, and I surely will not lie to your face.*

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the face of its judge— if it is not he, then who is it?

² "Should an abundance of words go unanswered, or _⌊a man full of talk_⌋* be vindicated?* ³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?*

² "Should the wise answer with windy knowledge, and should he fill his stomach with the east wind?

⁴ my lips surely will not speak falseness, and my tongue surely will not utter deceit.
