And Satan* answered Yahweh and said, "From roaming on the earth and from walking about in it." ³ So* Yahweh _⌊asked_⌋* Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. And still he persists in his blamelessness _⌊even though_⌋* you incited me against him to destroy him for nothing." ⁴ Then* Satan* answered him and said, "Skin for skin! All that _⌊that_⌋* man has he will give for his life. ⁵ But stretch out* your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."* ⁶ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "_⌊All right_⌋,* he is in your _⌊power_⌋.* Only spare his life." ⁷ So* Satan* went out from _⌊Yahweh's presence_⌋,* and he inflicted Job with loathsome skin sores from the sole of his foot up to the crown of his head. ⁸ _⌊So_⌋* he took for himself a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and he sat in the midst of the ashes. ⁹ Then* his wife said to him, "Are you still persisting in your blamelessness? _⌊Curse_⌋* God and die." ¹⁰ So* he said to her, "You speak like one of the foolish women speaks. Indeed, should we receive the good from God, but* not receive the evil?" In all this, Job did not sin with his lips. ¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him. ¹² Thus* they lifted up their eyes* from afar, but* they did not recognize him, so* they raised their voice, and they wept, and each man tore his outer garment* and threw dust on their heads _⌊toward the sky_⌋.* ¹³ Then* they sat with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, but* no one spoke* a word to him because they saw that _⌊his_⌋* suffering was very great.

⁶ And it happened _⌊one day_⌋* _⌊that_⌋* the sons of God* came to present themselves before Yahweh, and Satan* also came into their midst.

¹ In the year of the death of Uzziah the king, I saw the Lord sitting on a high and raised throne, and the hem of his robe was filling the temple. ² Seraphs were standing above him. _⌊Each had six wings_⌋:* with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

¹⁹ And the angel answered and* said to him, "I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news.

¹⁴ Are they not all spirits engaged in special service, sent on assignment for the sake of those who are going to inherit salvation?

⁸ And he said to Hagar, the servant of Sarai, "_⌊From where_⌋* have you come, and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of Sarai my mistress."

⁷ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "From where have you come?"
Then* Satan* answered Yahweh and said, "From roaming on the earth and from walking about in it."

³⁰ I will no longer speak much with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has _⌊no power_⌋* _⌊over_⌋* me.

⁴ among whom the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they would not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

⁸ Be sober; be on the alert. Your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

⁹ These are the generations* of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, without defect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

²⁰ Then Joab answered and said, "Far be it, far be it from me that I should swallow or I should destroy.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose* name was Job. That* man was blameless and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil.

⁸ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil."

¹¹ But,* on the other hand, stretch out* your hand and touch _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."

²¹ Then* he said, "Naked I came out from my mother's womb, and naked I will return there. Yahweh gives, and Yahweh takes. Let Yahweh's name be blessed." ²² In all this, Job did not sin and did not _⌊charge God with wrongdoing_⌋.*

¹⁷ who crushes me with a tempest and multiplies* my wounds without cause.

²⁰ Even though I am righteous, my mouth will condemn me; even though I am blameless, yet* it would pronounce me guilty.

¹⁵ Look,* though he kill me, I will hope in* him; however, I will defend my ways _⌊before him_⌋.*

⁵ Far be it from me that _⌊I would say that you* are right_⌋;* until I pass away, I will not put away from me my blamelessness. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness, and I will not let it go; my heart will not blame any of my days.

¹ Of David.*
Judge me, O Yahweh, because I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted Yahweh and not wavered.

³⁷ Observe the blameless and look at the upright, for there is a future for a man of peace.

¹² As for me, you have upheld me in my integrity, and you have set me in your presence forever.

⁸ The righteous is delivered from trouble, but the wicked enters into it.

⁶ Righteousness will guard the upright of way, but wickedness will overthrow sin.

² He who walks in uprightness fears Yahweh, but he who is devious in his ways displeases him.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination of Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹⁷ The highway of the upright, it turns from evil, he who guards himself* keeps his way.

³ Jesus replied, "Neither this man sinned nor his parents, but it happened* so that the works of God could be revealed in him.

¹² Not that I have already received this,* or have already been made perfect, but I press on if indeed I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ.*

¹² Blessed is the person* who endures testing, because when he* is approved he will receive the crown of life that he* has promised to those who love him.

⁷ so that the genuineness of your faith, more valuable than gold that is passing away, but is tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ,* after you* have suffered for a short time, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

³ Then Queen Esther answered, and she said, "If I have found favor in your eyes,* O king, and if it is good to the king, let my life be given to me at my petition and my people at my request; ⁴ I and my people have been sold to be destroyed and killed, to be annihilated. If we had been sold as male and female slaves I would have kept quiet, because this* is not a need sufficient to trouble the king."*

²⁰ On that day humanity will throw away its idols of silver and its idols of gold, which they made for it to worship, to the rodents* and to the bats— ²¹ to enter into the crevices of the rocks and into the clefts of the crags from the presence of the terror of Yahweh and from the glory of his majesty, _⌊when he rises_⌋* to terrify the earth.

⁸ But ten men were found among them, and they said to Ishmael, "You must not kill us, for _⌊we have_⌋* hidden treasures in the field, wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. So he refrained and he did not kill them in the midst of their fellow countrymen.

²⁵ "For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, what you will eat,* and not for your body, what you will wear. Is your life not more than food and your body more than clothing?

²⁶ For what will a person be benefited if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?

¹⁸ And because* we were violently battered by the storm, on the next day _⌊they began_⌋* jettisoning the cargo,* ¹⁹ and on the third day they threw overboard the gear of the ship with their own hands.

⁸ _⌊More than that_⌋*, I even consider all things to be loss because of the surpassing greatness of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for the sake of whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and consider them* dung, in order that I may gain Christ ⁹ and may be found in him, not having my righteousness which is from the law, but which is through faith in Christ,* the righteousness from God on the basis of faith,* ¹⁰ so that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, being conformed to his death,

¹⁵ And you shall speak to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* saying, '_⌊Any man_⌋* when he curses his God shall bear* his sin.

¹⁷ Then David said to God, "Was it not I who gave a command to count the people? Now I am he who has sinned, and I have certainly done wickedness, but these sheep, what have they done? O Yahweh, my God, please let your hand be against me and against the house of my father, but against your people, let there be no plague."

⁵ _⌊Then when_⌋* the days of the feast had run their course, _⌊Job would send_⌋,* and he would sanctify them. Thus* he would arise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of all of them, because Job thought,* "Perhaps my children have sinned and _⌊cursed_⌋* God in their heart." This is what Job used to do _⌊all the time_⌋.*

⁹ Then* his wife said to him, "Are you still persisting in your blamelessness? _⌊Curse_⌋* God and die."

²⁰ My bones* cling to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. ²¹ "Pity me, pity me, you my friends, for God's hand has touched me.

³ When I kept silent, my bones were worn out due to my groaning all the day. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me. My vigor was changed into the dry heat of summer. Selah

² For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation. There is no health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities have passed over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds start to stink; they rot because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am bowed down; I am bent over greatly. All the day I go about mourning. ⁷ For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

¹⁰ Remove from me your affliction. By the opposition of your hand I perish.

²¹ And it* will pass through it* distressed and hungry, and this shall happen: when it is hungry, it will be enraged, and it will curse its king and its gods,* and it will face upwar

¹² So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "Look, _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* is in your _⌊power_⌋.* Only do not stretch out your hand _⌊against_⌋* him." So* Satan* went out from Yahweh's _⌊presence_⌋.*

¹⁰ and I prescribed my rule for it, and I set bars and doors, ¹¹ and I said, 'You shall come up to here, but* you shall not go further, and here it will set a boundary _⌊for your proud surging waves_⌋'?*

⁷ who stills the roar of the seas, the roar of their waves, and the commotion of the peoples,

²⁹ For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For it had seized him many times, and he was bound with chains and shackles and* was guarded, and breaking the bonds he would be driven by the demon into the deserted places.) ³⁰ So Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Legion," because many demons had entered into him. ³¹ And they began imploring* him that he would not order them to depart into the abyss. ³² Now there was a large herd of pigs feeding there on the hill, and they implored him that he would permit them to enter into those pigs. And he permitted them. ³³ So the demons came out of the man and* entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed headlong down the steep slope into the lake and were drowned.

³¹ "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded to sift you like wheat, ³² but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, when* once you have turned back,* strengthen your brothers."

¹³ Temptation has not come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will also make a way out together with the temptation, so that you may be able to endure it.

¹⁰ Do not be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and you will experience affliction ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

¹ And I saw an angel descending from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. ² And he seized the dragon—the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan—and bound him for a thousand years,

⁷ And when the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison

⁹ And it will become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and it will become on humans and on animals a skin sore sprouting blisters in all the land of Egypt." ¹⁰ And they took the soot of the smelting furnace, and they stood before Pharaoh, and Moses sprinkled it toward the heavens, and it became skin sores sprouting blisters on humans and on animals. ¹¹ And the magicians were not able to stand before Moses because of the skin sores, for the skin sores were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians.

²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.*

³⁵ Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which _⌊you will not be able to be healed_⌋,* from the sole of your foot and up to your crown.

²² He said, 'I will go out and I will be a false spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' And he* said, 'You shall entice and succeed, go out and do so.'

⁵ My body is clothed with maggots and clods of dust; my skin hardens, then* it gives way again.

¹⁷ _⌊At night I am in great pain_⌋;* my pains do not take a rest. ¹⁸ He seizes my clothing with _⌊great power_⌋;* he grasps me by my tunic's collar. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the dirt, and I have become like dust* and ashes.

³⁰ My skin turns black on me, and my bones burn with heat.

⁶ From the sole of the foot and up to the head there is no health in it; bruise and sore and bleeding wound have not been cleansed, and they have not been bound up and not softened with the oil.

¹⁷ the Lord will make the heads* of the daughters of Zion scabby, and Yahweh will lay their foreheads bare."

¹¹ And they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pain and because of their sores, and they did not repent of their deeds.

¹⁹ Tamar put ashes on her head, and she tore the long-sleeved robe which was on her. She put her hand on her head, and _⌊she went away, crying out as she went_⌋.*

¹⁴ My relatives have failed, and my close friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ The sojourners in* my house and my slave women count me as a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes. ¹⁶ I call to my servant, but* he does not answer; I must _⌊personally_⌋* plead with him. ¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to _⌊my own family_⌋.*

⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

⁵ My wounds start to stink; they rot because of my foolishness.

⁷ For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh.

³ to _⌊give_⌋* for those in mourning in Zion, to give them a head wrap instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit. And _⌊they will be called_⌋* oaks of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, to show his glory.

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird yourself with sackcloth, and roll about in the ashes in mourning, a mourning ceremony as for an only child. Make for yourself wailing of bitterness, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.

³⁰ and they will lament* over you with their voice, and they will cry out* bitterly, and they will throw* dust on their heads, and they will roll* in the dust.

⁶ And the news reached the king of Nineveh, and he rose from his throne and removed his royal robe, put on sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.

²¹ "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

²⁰ And a certain poor man _⌊named_⌋* Lazarus, covered with sores, lay at his gate, ²¹ and was longing to be filled with what fell from the table of the rich man. But even the dogs came and* licked his sores.

⁶ When* the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was a delight to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise, then* she took from its fruit and she ate. And she gave it also to her husband with her, and he ate.

¹² And the man* replied,* "The woman whom you gave to be with me—she gave to me from the tree and I ate."

⁴ It happened at the time of Solomon's old age that his wives guided his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully with Yahweh his God as the heart of David his father had been.

³³ While he was still speaking with them, suddenly the messenger was coming down to him, and he said, "Look this trouble is from Yahweh. Why should I wait for Yahweh any longer?"

³ So* Yahweh _⌊asked_⌋* Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. And still he persists in his blamelessness _⌊even though_⌋* you incited me against him to destroy him for nothing."

⁵ But stretch out* your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."*

¹⁴ And they say to God, 'Turn away from us, for* we do not desire to know your ways. ¹⁵ Who is Shaddai that we should serve him, or* what would we benefit when we plead with him?'

¹⁴ You have said, 'It is useless* to serve God! What is the gain if we keep* his requirements, and if we walk as mourners _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh of hosts?

¹⁷ And to Adam* he said, "Because you listened to the voice of your wife and you ate from the tree _⌊from which I forbade you to eat_⌋,*
the ground shall be cursed on your account. In pain you shall eat from it all the days of your life.

²⁰ When David returned to bless his household, Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David. She said, "How the king of Israel honored himself today _⌊by uncovering himself_⌋* before the eyes of the maids of his servants, _⌊as the total exposure of a worthless one_⌋."* ²¹ So David said to Michal, "In the presence of Yahweh who chose me _⌊over_⌋* your father and _⌊over_⌋* his household, to appoint me as leader over the people of Yahweh, over Israel, I have celebrated before Yahweh.

¹³ As for me, where should I take my disgrace? You will be as one of the fools in Israel. So please, speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you."

²² Then David said, "What is it to me or to you, sons of Zeruiah, that you should be an adversary today? Should anyone be put to death in Israel? Do I not know today that I am king over Israel?"

²⁸ For there was no one in all the house of my father _⌊who were not doomed to death_⌋* before my lord the king, but you set your servant among those who eat at your table. Do I have any righteousness any longer except to cry out to the king?"

¹⁰ The heart of David struck him after he had counted the people, and David said to Yahweh, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done! So then, O Yahweh, please forgive the guilt of your servant because I have acted very foolishly."

⁹ For the eyes of Yahweh roam throughout all the earth to strengthen those whose heart is fully devoted to him. You have been foolish in this, for from now on you will have wars."

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose* name was Job. That* man was blameless and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. ² And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. ³ Then* his livestock came to be seven thousand sheep and goats and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs* of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and he had very many slaves, and that man was greater than all the people of the east.

¹⁰ Have you* not put a fence around him and his household and around _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* _⌊on every side_⌋?* You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock* has increased in the land.

¹ For the music director. For Jeduthun.* A psalm of David.*
I said, "I will guard my ways _⌊that I may not sin_⌋* with my tongue. I will keep a muzzle over my mouth as long as the wicked are before me."

¹² By the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips, even in their pride, let them be trapped, and for the curses* and lies* they proclaim.

⁶ Lay aside simplicity and live; walk in the way of understanding."

¹³ A woman of foolishness is loud, simple, and does not know _⌊it_⌋.*

³⁸ Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that disaster and good will come? ³⁹ Why should any living person complain about his sin? ⁴⁰ Let us test and examine our ways; let us return to Yahweh. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our hearts with our hands to God in the heavens.

³⁴ Offspring of vipers! How are you able to say good things when you* are evil? For from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good person from his* good treasury brings out good things, and the evil person from his* evil treasury brings out evil things. ³⁶ But I tell you that every worthless word that they speak, people will give an account for it on the day of judgment! ³⁷ For by your words you will be vindicated, and by your words you will be condemned."

²³ But he turned around and* said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a cause for stumbling to me, because you are not intent on the things of God, but the things of people!"

² Now five of them were foolish and five were wise.

¹¹ So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into its* sheath! The cup that the Father has given me—shall I not drink it?"

¹² rejoicing in hope, enduring in affliction, being devoted to prayer,

⁹ Furthermore, we have had _⌊our earthly fathers_⌋* who disciplined us, and we respected them. Will we not much rather subject ourselves to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a few days according to what seemed appropriate to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we can have a share in his holiness. ¹¹ Now all discipline seems for the moment not to be joyful but painful, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those who are trained by it.

² For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual,* able to hold in check his whole body also.

¹⁰ Brothers, take as an example of perseverance and endurance the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

² And she bore to him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.

¹¹ The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs of Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz,

³⁵ And all his sons and daughters tried to console him, but he refused to be consoled. And he said, "No, I shall go down to my son, to Sheol, mourning." And his father wept for him.

³² And the sons of Keturah, Abraham's concubine: she gave birth to Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan: Sheba and Dedan.

¹⁴ "Loyal love* should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if* he forsakes the fear of Shaddai.

¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked; the traveling merchants of Sheba hope for them.

¹ Then* Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,*

⁴ "But* you* _⌊whitewash with lies_⌋;* all of you* are _⌊worthless healers_⌋.*

¹ Then* Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

² "I have heard many things like these; all of you are _⌊miserable comforters_⌋.*

²⁰ My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God,

¹ Then* Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,

¹⁹ All _⌊my intimate friends_⌋* abhor me, and these whom I have loved have turned against me.

²¹ "Pity me, pity me, you my friends, for God's hand has touched me.

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

¹¹ So* all his brothers and all his sisters and all those who had known him _⌊before_⌋* came to him, and they ate bread* with him in his house and showed sympathy to him and comforted him for all the disaster* that Yahweh had brought upon him. Then* each one gave to him one piece of money, and each one gave to him one ornamental ring of gold.

¹⁷ The friend loves at all times*, but a brother is born for adversity.

²⁴ A man of many friends will come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

¹⁰ As for your friend and a friend of your father, do not forsake them, and the house of your brother, do not enter on the day of your calamity. Better is a close neighbor than a distant brother.

¹⁹ Two things here have happened to you—who will _⌊show sympathy_⌋* for you?— devastation and destruction, famine and sword—who will comfort you?

⁷ Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of hosts:
"Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel become lost from those who understand? Is their wisdom rotting?

¹⁹ So many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary in order to console them concerning their* brother.)

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; if a member* is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

³ Remember the prisoners, as though you were fellow-prisoners; remember* the mistreated, as though you yourselves also are being mistreated* in the body.

³⁴ When Esau heard the words of his father he cried out with a great and exceedingly bitter cry of distress. And he said to his father, "Bless me as well, my father!"

⁶ And Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the ground on his face before the ark of Yahweh until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.*

⁴ And as the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* the people _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.*

¹⁹ So the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. _⌊And when they came_⌋* to Bethlehem, all of the town was stirred because of them. And they said, "Is this Naomi?" ²⁰ And she said to them, "You should not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for Shaddai* has _⌊caused me to be very bitter_⌋.* ²¹ I went away full, but Yahweh brought me back empty-handed! Why call me Naomi _⌊when Yahweh has testified against me_⌋* and Shaddai* has brought calamity upon me?"

⁴ When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, _⌊they reported these things to_⌋* the people. Then all the people lifted up their voices and wept.

⁴ Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until there was not enough strength in them to weep.

³⁶ When he finished speaking, look, the sons of the king came and they lifted up their voice and wept. Also, the king and all his servants wept a very great weeping.

¹ On the twenty-fourth day of this month the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered in fasting, in sackcloths, and with soil on them.

¹ Mordecai learned all that had been done and he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes. And he went through the middle of the city and cried out a loud and bitter cry;

²⁰ Then* Job arose and tore his outer garment* and shaved his head; _⌊then_⌋* he fell upon the ground and he worshiped.

¹⁴ My relatives have failed, and my close friends have forgotten me.

¹⁰ They sit on the ground, the elders of the daughter of Zion are silent. They cast dust on their head, they have put on sackcloth; the young women of Jerusalem have bowed their head down to the ground.

⁷ Her princes were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk; their bodies were more ruddy than rubies, sapphire their appearance. ⁸ Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are not recognized in the streets; their skin has shriveled on their bones, it has become dry like wood.

¹⁹ And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying,
"Woe, woe, the great city, in which all those who had ships on the sea became rich from her prosperity, because in one hour she has been laid waste!"

⁵ And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

⁸ And God called the vaulted dome* "heaven."* And there was evening, and there was morning, a second day.

¹⁰ When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which was beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful wailing. And he made a mourning ceremony for his father seven days.

³ When I heard this I tore my garment and my robe, and I pulled the hair out from my head and beard, and I sat appalled.

⁴ When I heard these words, I sat and wept and mourned for days, and I was fasting and praying before the God of the heavens.

² "If someone would test a word with you, would you be offended? But* who can refrain from speaking?

⁴ You hold open my eyelids. I am troubled and cannot speak.

²⁶ And her* gates shall lament and mourn, and she shall be banished; she shall sit upon the ground.

¹ Come down and sit on the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon! Sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of Chaldea! For _⌊they shall no longer call_⌋* you tender and delicate.

¹⁵ And I went to the exiles* at Tel Abib, who were dwelling near the _⌊Kebar River_⌋,* and I sat where they were dwelling. I sat there seven days in the midst of them, stunned.
