¹ Then* Job answered and said, ² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you* torment me* and crush me with words? ³ These ten times you* have disgraced me; you* are not ashamed that you* have attacked* me. ⁴ And what is more, if I have truly erred, my error remains with me. ⁵ If indeed you* must magnify yourselves against me, and you* must let my disgrace argue against me, ⁶ know then that God has wronged me and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ "Look, I cry out, 'Violence!' but* I am not answered; I cry out, but* there is no justice. ⁸ He has walled up my way so that* I cannot pass; and he has set darkness upon my paths. ⁹ He has taken my glory from me, and he has removed the crown of* my head. ¹⁰ He has broken me down all around, and I am gone. And he has uprooted my hope like a tree, ¹¹ and he has kindled his wrath against me, and _⌊he has counted me as one of his foes_⌋.* ¹² His troops have come together and have thrown up their rampart* against me and have encamped around my tent. ¹³ "He has removed my kinsfolk from me, and my acquaintances have only* turned aside from me. ¹⁴ My relatives have failed, and my close friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ The sojourners in* my house and my slave women count me as a stranger; I have become a foreigner in their eyes. ¹⁶ I call to my servant, but* he does not answer; I must _⌊personally_⌋* plead with him. ¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to _⌊my own family_⌋.* ¹⁸ Little boys also despise me; when I rise, then* they talk against me. ¹⁹ All _⌊my intimate friends_⌋* abhor me, and these whom I have loved have turned against me. ²⁰ My bones* cling to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. ²¹ "Pity me, pity me, you my friends, for God's hand has touched me. ²² Why do you* pursue me like God? And are not satisfied with my flesh? ²³ "_⌊O that_⌋* my words could be written down! _⌊O that they could be inscribed in a scroll_⌋!* ²⁴ That with a pen of iron and with lead they might be engraved on a rock forever! ²⁵ But* I myself* know that my redeemer is alive, and at the last he will stand up upon _⌊the earth_⌋.* ²⁶ And after my skin has been thus destroyed, but* from* my flesh I will see God, ²⁷ whom _⌊I will see for myself_⌋,* and whom my eyes will see and not a stranger.* _⌊My heart faints within me_⌋.* ²⁸ "If you* say, 'How will we persecute him?' And 'The root of the trouble is found' in me,* ²⁹ be afraid for yourselves _⌊because of the sword_⌋,* for wrath brings punishment by* the sword, so that you may know that there is judgment."

¹⁶ And because she nagged him day after day with her words, and pestered him, _⌊his soul grew impatient to the point of death_⌋.*

² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you say these things, and the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?

² "_⌊How long_⌋* _⌊will you* hunt for words_⌋?* Consider,* and afterward we shall speak.

² "_⌊As God lives_⌋,* he has removed my justice, and Shaddai has made my inner self* bitter.

² Be gracious to me, O Yahweh, because I am feeble. Heal me, O Yahweh, for my bones are terrified. ³ My soul is also very terrified. But you, O Yahweh, how long?

¹ For the music director. A psalm of David.*
How long, O Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?

¹⁰ As with a shattering in my bones my oppressors taunt me, while they say to me _⌊all day_⌋,* "Where is your God?"

²¹ The _⌊buttery words_⌋* of his mouth were smooth, but there was battle in his heart. His words were smoother than oil, but they were drawn swords.

⁷ Look, they pour out talk with their mouth. Swords are on their lips, for they say, "Who hears?"

³ who sharpen their tongue like a sword. They bend their bow to shoot their arrows—bitter words,

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly, like the thrust of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

²¹ Death and life are in the _⌊power_⌋* of the tongue, and those who love her* will eat of her fruit.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire! The world of unrighteousness,* the tongue, is set among our members, defiling the whole body and setting on fire _⌊the course of human existence_⌋*, being set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every species of animals and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, is being tamed and has been tamed by the human species, ⁸ but no human being is able to tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

⁷ and rescued righteous Lot, worn down by the way of life of lawless persons in licentiousness ⁸ (for that righteous man, as he* lived among them day after day, was tormenting his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he was seeing and hearing),

¹⁰ and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, "_⌊How long_⌋*, holy and true Lord, will you not judge and avenge our blood from those who live on the earth?"

⁷ and your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but God has not allowed him to harm me.

⁷ And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger to them. And he spoke with them harshly and said to them, "From where have you come?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food."

²⁶ At my breaking the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread* for you, then* ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied.

²² But because all the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the desert yet tested me these ten times and did not listen to my voice,

¹² When the Jews who lived beside them came, they said to us ten times, "From all of the places where they live, they will come up against us."

⁶ Is not your fear in God your confidence? Is not your hope even* the integrity of your ways? ⁷ "_⌊Think_⌋* now, who has perished who is innocent? Or* where are the upright destroyed? ⁸ Just as I have seen, plowers of mischief and sowers of trouble will reap it. ⁹ By* the breath of God they perish, and by* the blast of his anger they come to an end. ¹⁰ The roar of the lion and the voice of a lion in its prime, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The lion is perishing without* prey, and the lion's whelps are scattered.

³ I have seen a fool taking root, but* suddenly I cursed his dwelling. ⁴ His children are far from deliverance, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer—

⁴ If your children sinned against him, then* he sent them into the _⌊power_⌋* of their transgression. ⁵ If you yourself* would seek God, then* you would plead to Shaddai for grace. ⁶ If you are pure and upright, indeed,* now he will rouse himself for you, and he will restore your righteous abode.

³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?*

¹⁴ if iniquity* is in your hand, put it far away, and you must not let wickedness reside in your tents—

⁴ "_⌊What is worse_⌋,* you yourself* are doing away with fear, and you are lessening meditation _⌊before_⌋* God. ⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Your mouth condemns you, and not I; and your lips testify against you.

¹¹ "Are the consolations of God too small for you, a word spoken gently with you? ¹² Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash,

⁴ "You who are tearing _⌊yourself_⌋* in your* anger, will the earth be forsaken because of you?* Or* will the rock be removed from its place? ⁵ Furthermore,* the light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of his fire will not shine. ⁶ The light becomes dark in his tent, and his lamp above him is put out. ⁷ "_⌊His strong steps_⌋* are shortened, and his own schemes* throw him down, ⁸ for he is thrust into a net by his feet, and he walks into a pitfall. ⁹ A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare takes hold of him. ¹⁰ His rope is hidden in the ground, and his trap on the path. ¹¹ "Sudden terrors terrify him all around, and they chase him at his heels. ¹² His wealth will become hunger, and disaster is ready for his stumbling. ¹³ It consumes parts of his skin; the firstborn of death consumes his limbs. ¹⁴ He is torn from his tent _⌊in which he trusted_⌋,* and it brought him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ "_⌊Nothing_⌋* remains for him in his tent; sulfur is scattered upon his dwelling place. ¹⁶ His roots dry up _⌊below_⌋,* and its branches* wither away above.* ¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street. ¹⁸ "They thrust him from light into darkness, and they drive him out from the world. ¹⁹ There is no offspring for him nor* a descendant among his people, and there is not a survivor in his abode. ²⁰ Those of the west are appalled over _⌊his fate_⌋,* and those of the east _⌊are seized with horror_⌋.* ²¹ Surely these are the dwellings of the godless, and this is the dwelling place of him who knows not God."

¹⁷ My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to _⌊my own family_⌋.*

⁸ I have become a stranger to my brothers and a foreigner to my mother's sons,

²⁰ And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired from them, he found them ten times better than all of the magicians* and conjurers* that _⌊were in his entire kingdom_⌋.*

¹⁷ David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel destroying among the people, and he said, "Look, I have sinned and I have done wrong, but these sheep, what did they do? Please let your hand be against me and against the house of my father."

³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?* ⁴ For you say, 'My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight.' ⁵ But,* _⌊O that_⌋* God might speak, and that he would open his lips to you, ⁶ and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom, for _⌊insight has many sides_⌋.* And know that God _⌊on your behalf_⌋* has forgotten _⌊some of_⌋* your guilt.

¹² If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, alone you shall bear it.

⁴ Look! _⌊All lives are mine_⌋.* _⌊The lives of father and son alike are mine_⌋.* The person* sinning will die.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, in order that each one may receive back the things through the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

⁵ For each one will carry his own burden.

⁶ (Now her rival wife would provoke her severely in order to upset her because Yahweh had closed her womb.)

³ They replied to me, "The survivors in the province who have survived the captivity are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned in the fire."

²⁶ Let them be shamed and abashed altogether, who rejoice at my misfortune. Let them put on shame and insult, who magnify themselves against me.

¹⁶ For I said, "Help, lest they rejoice over me, lest they boast against me when my foot slips."

¹¹ By this I know that you delight in me: because my enemy has not shouted in triumph over me.

¹² For it is not an enemy that taunts me, or I could bear it. It is not one who hates me that magnifies himself over me, or I could hide myself from him.

¹ And seven women shall grasp at one man on that day, saying, "We will eat our own bread, and we will wear our own clothing; only _⌊let us be called by your name_⌋!* Take away our disgrace!"

⁸ You should not rejoice over me, O my enemy! When I fall I will stand up; when I sit in darkness Yahweh will be a light for me.

¹⁰ This shall be for them in place of their pride because they mocked and boasted against the people of Yahweh of hosts.

⁷ And Yahweh will save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants* of Jerusalem may not be exalted over Judah.

²⁵ "Thus the Lord has done for me in the days in which he has concerned himself with me,* to take away my disgrace among people."

² And he answered and* said to them, "Do you think that these Galileans were sinners worse than all the Galileans, because they suffered these things? ³ No, I tell you, but unless you repent you will all perish as well! ⁴ Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were sinners worse than all the people who live in Jerusalem?

² And his disciples asked him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?"

³⁴ They answered and said to him, "You were born completely in sin, and are you attempting to teach* us?" And they threw him out.

²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you, watcher of humanity? Why have you made me as a target for yourself, so that* I have become a burden to myself?*

¹¹ God delivers me to an evil one, and he casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² "I was at ease, then* he broke me in two, and he seized me by my neck; then* he shattered me and set me up as a target for him. ¹³ His archers surround me; he slashes open my kidneys, and he does not have compassion; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breached me _⌊breach upon breach_⌋;* he rushes at me like a warrior.

⁸ for he is thrust into a net by his feet, and he walks into a pitfall. ⁹ A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare takes hold of him. ¹⁰ His rope is hidden in the ground, and his trap on the path.

⁹ Surely you have rejected and disgraced us, and have not gone out with our armies. ¹⁰ You have caused us to pull back from the enemy, and so those who hate us have plundered for themselves. ¹¹ You have given us as sheep for food, and among the nations you have scattered us. ¹² You have sold your people _⌊cheaply_⌋,* and did not profit by their price. ¹³ You have made us a taunt to our neighbors, a derision and a scorn to those around us. ¹⁴ You have made us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁰ For you have tested us, O God; you have tried us as silver is tried. ¹¹ You brought us into the net; you placed a _⌊heavy burden_⌋* on our backs. ¹² You let men* ride over our heads. We went through fire and through water, but you have brought us out to the place of abundance.*

¹² Is it nothing to you, _⌊all who pass by_⌋?* Look and see if there is sorrow like my sorrow,* which was dealt to me, which Yahweh inflicted on the _⌊day of his wrath_⌋.* ¹³ From heaven he sent fire, into my bones he let it descend. He spread out a net for my feet; he turned me back, he gave me devastation, fainting all day.

¹³ And I will spread out my net on him, and he will be captured in my hunting snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die.

³ Thus says the Lord Yahweh:
Now I will spread my net over you in the assembly of many peoples, and I will bring you up in my dragnet.

¹² Just as they go, I will cast my net over them; I will bring them down like the birds* of the heavens;* I will discipline them according to a report to their assembly.*

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the face of its judge— if it is not he, then who is it?

³² "For* he is not a mortal like me that I can answer him, that _⌊we can come to trial together_⌋.*

³ Is it good for you that you oppress, that you despise the labor of your hands, and you smile over the schemes of the wicked?

¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! But* if I am righteous, I dare not lift my head; I am filled with shame, and just look at my misery! ¹⁶ And if my head grows bold, you would hunt me as the lion in its prime; _⌊and you repeat your exploits against me_⌋.* ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and you increase your vexation against me; _⌊relief forces_⌋* are against me.

¹⁵ Look,* though he kill me, I will hope in* him; however, I will defend my ways _⌊before him_⌋.* ¹⁶ Moreover, this is salvation to me, that the godless would not come _⌊before him_⌋.* ¹⁷ "Listen carefully to my words, and let my exposition be in your ears. ¹⁸ Please look,* I have prepared my case; I know that I myself* will be vindicated. ¹⁹ Who is he who will contend with me? For _⌊then_⌋ I would be silent, and I would pass away. ²⁰ "Only you* must not do these two things to me; then I will not hide from your face: ²¹ withdraw your* hand from me, and let not your* dread terrify me. ²² Then* call, and I myself* will answer; or let me speak, then* reply to me. ²³ "_⌊How many_⌋* are my iniquities and sins? Make known to me my transgression and my sin.

¹⁷ _⌊although_⌋* violence is not on my hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ "O earth, you should not cover my blood, and let there be no place* for my cry for help. ¹⁹ So now look, my witness is in the heavens, and he who vouches for me is in the heights.

²¹ and it argues* for a mortal with God, and as _⌊a human_⌋* for his friend.

²⁷ "Look, I know your* thoughts and the schemes you devise against me.

³ _⌊O that_⌋* I knew and that I might find him; O that I might come to his dwelling. ⁴ I would lay my case _⌊before him_⌋,* and I would fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I want to know the words with which he would answer me, and I want to understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his strength? No, but he himself* would give heed to me. ⁷ There an upright person could reason with him, and I would be acquitted forever by my judge.

²⁰ I cry to you for help, but* you do not answer me; I stand, and you merely look at me.

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written, ³⁶ I would _⌊surely_⌋* carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me like a crown.

⁵ for Job has said, 'I am righteous, but God has taken away my justice.

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

² O my God, I call by day and you do not answer, and by night but I have no rest.*

⁸ For _⌊as often as_⌋* I speak, I must cry out violence and destruction. I must shout, for the word of Yahweh has become for me a disgrace and derision all day long.

⁸ Though I cry out for help, he shuts out my prayers.

² O Yahweh, how long shall I cry for help and you will not listen? How long will I cry out to you, "Violence!" and you will not save? ³ Why do you cause me to see evil while you look at trouble? Destruction and violence happen before me; contention and strife arise.

⁷ They cried out to Yahweh, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and he brought the sea over them* and covered them; your own eyes saw what I did in Egypt. Then you lived in the wilderness for many days.

²³ Why does he* give light to a man whose way is hidden, and God has fenced him in all around?

²⁶ Indeed, I hoped for good, but evil came, and I waited for light, but darkness came.

⁸ You have removed my acquaintances far from me. You have made me detestable* to them. I am confined and cannot go out.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked ones is like deep darkness; they do not know what they stumble over.

¹⁰ Who among you is in fear of Yahweh, obeys* the voice of his servant? Who walks in darkness and has no light, trusts in the name of Yahweh and depends on his God?

¹⁶ Give glory to Yahweh your God _⌊before_⌋* he brings darkness, and _⌊before_⌋* your feet stumble on the mountains at twilight. And you will hope for light, but he makes it as gloom, he makes it* as thick darkness.

¹² "_⌊Therefore_⌋* their way will be to them like the slippery places, they will be pushed in the darkness, and they will fall into it, for I will bring disaster on them in the year of their punishment," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

⁷ He has built a wall around me, I cannot go out; he has made my bronze fetters heavy.

⁹ He has blocked my ways with dressed stones; he has made my paths crooked.

⁶ Therefore, Look! I am going to hedge her path* _⌊with thorns_⌋,* and I will build a stone wall, a stone wall against her, and she will not find her paths.

¹² Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world! The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

¹⁷ He leads counselors away stripped, and he makes fools of judges.

⁷ "At my going out the gate to the city, I secured my seat in the square. ⁸ Young men saw me and stepped aside, and the aged rose up and stood. ⁹ Officials refrained from talking, and they laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voices* of nobles were hushed, and their tongue stuck to their palate. ¹¹ "When the ear heard and commended me, and the eye saw and testified in support of me ¹² because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved* the orphan for whom there was no helper. ¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a headband.

²⁰ My glory was new with me, and _⌊I was revitalized regularly_⌋.'* ²¹ "They listened to me and waited, and they kept silent for my counsel.

¹ "But now those younger than I, as far as days, laugh at me, whose fathers I rejected for setting with the dogs of my sheep and goats.

¹⁶ Do not fear when a man becomes rich, when the wealth* of his house increases, ¹⁷ because when he dies he will not take away any of it. His wealth will not follow down after him.

³⁹ You have repudiated the covenant with your servant; you have defiled* his crown in* the dirt.

⁴⁴ You have made his splendor to cease, and cast his throne to the ground.

⁶ But* you shall be called the priests of Yahweh, _⌊you will be called_⌋* servers of our God. You shall eat the wealth of the nations, and you shall boast in their riches.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned!

¹¹ Ephraim's glory is like a bird; it will fly away— no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.

¹³ And then there was one day when* his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their firstborn brother's house. ¹⁴ And a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the female donkeys were feeding _⌊beside them_⌋.* ¹⁵ Then* the Sabeans _⌊attacked_⌋,* and they took them, and they slew the servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋.* But* I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁶ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens, and it blazed up against the sheep and goats and against the servants, and it consumed them. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁷ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three divisions, and they made a raid on the camels, and they carried them away, and they struck your servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋,* but I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁸ At the time* this one was speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their firstborn brother's house. ¹⁹ And behold,* a great wind came from across the desert, and it struck the four corners of the house _⌊so that_⌋* it fell upon the young people, and they died. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

⁷ So* Satan* went out from _⌊Yahweh's presence_⌋,* and he inflicted Job with loathsome skin sores from the sole of his foot up to the crown of his head.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that _⌊I should hold out_⌋?*

⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end _⌊without hope_⌋.*

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God; and the hope of the godless will perish, ¹⁴ whose confidence is cut off and _⌊whose trust_⌋* is a spider's house. ¹⁵ He will lean himself against his house, but* it will not stand; he will take hold of it, but* it will not endure. ¹⁶ He is _⌊thriving_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* the sun, and his plant shoots spread over his garden. ¹⁷ His roots twine over a stone heap; he sees a house of stone. ¹⁸ If he destroys him from his place, then* it deceives him, saying, 'I have never seen you.'

¹⁴ If he tears down, then* it will not be rebuilt; if he shuts a man in, then* he cannot be freed.

¹¹ "My days are past; my plans are broken down— even the desires of my heart.

¹⁵ where* then is my hope? And _⌊who will see my hope_⌋?*

²⁰ The womb forgets him. The maggot feasts on him until he is no longer remembered, and wickedness is broken like a* tree.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked acting violently and spreading himself out like a luxuriant native tree. ³⁶ Then he passed on* and behold, he was not. And I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹³ But as for me, I cry for help to you, O Yahweh, and in the morning my prayer comes before you. ¹⁴ Why do you reject my soul, O Yahweh? Why do you hide your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and perishing from my youth. I bear your terrors. I am distraught.* ¹⁶ Your burning anger has passed over me; your sudden fears have destroyed me. ¹⁷ They surround me like water all the day; they circle about me altogether. ¹⁸ You have removed loved one and friend far from me, my acquaintances far from my darkness.

¹¹ My days are like a lengthened shadow, and I wither like grass.

⁵ The Lord has become like an enemy; he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all its citadel fortresses;* he has ruined all its fortifications and multiplied lamentation and mourning in the daughter of Judah. ⁶ He has broken down _⌊his dwelling_⌋* place like the garden; he has ruined his appointed feasts; Yahweh has made them forget in Zion _⌊festival_⌋* and Sabbath, and he has despised in his anger king and priest.

⁸ We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; ⁹ persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed;

²² For a fire was kindled* by my anger, and it burned _⌊up to the depths of Sheol_⌋,* and it devoured the earth and its produce, and it set afire the foundation of the mountains.

²⁴ Why do you* hide your* face and count me as your* enemy?

⁹ His wrath has torn, and he has been hostile toward me; he gnashed at me with his teeth. My foe sharpens his eyes against me.

¹⁰ Look, he finds fault against me; he reckons me as his enemy;

⁴⁶ How long, O Yahweh? Will you hide yourself forever? Will your wrath burn like fire forever?

⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten off* by your wrath.

⁵ The Lord has become like an enemy; he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all its citadel fortresses;* he has ruined all its fortifications and multiplied lamentation and mourning in the daughter of Judah.

¹¹ God delivers me to an evil one, and he casts me into the hands of the wicked.

¹³ His archers surround me; he slashes open my kidneys, and he does not have compassion; he pours out my gall on the ground.

¹² On the right hand the brood rises* up; _⌊they put me to flight_⌋,* and they build up their _⌊siege ramps_⌋* against me.

⁵ Ah! Assyria, the rod of my anger, and a staff is in their hand: my wrath! ⁶ I send him against a godless nation, and I command him against the people of my wrath, to capture spoil and to carry off plunder, and to make them* a trampling place, like the clay of the streets.

²³ And I will put it in the hand of your tormenters, who have said to _⌊you_⌋,* 'Bow down that* we may _⌊pass_⌋* over you!' And you have _⌊made_⌋* your back like the ground, and like the street for those who _⌊pass_⌋* over you."

²¹ "For now you* have become _⌊such_⌋;* you see terrors, and you fear. ²² Is it because I have said, 'Give to me,' or,* 'Offer a bribe for me from your wealth'? ²³ or,* 'Save me from the foe's hand,' or,* 'Ransom me from the tyrants' hand'?

⁷ "Surely now he has worn me out; you* have devastated all my company.

¹¹ Because of all my adversaries I have become a disgrace, especially to my neighbors, and a dread to my acquaintances. Those who see me in the street flee from me.

¹¹ My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction, and my relatives stand afar off.

²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart and I am sick. And I hoped for sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

¹⁸ You have removed loved one and friend far from me, my acquaintances far from my darkness.

⁵⁶ But all this has happened in order that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then the disciples all abandoned him and* fled.

¹⁶ At my first defense, no one came to my aid, but they all deserted me; may it not be counted against them.

²³ The counsel that Ahithophel gave in those days was regarded as when a man* inquired of the word of God, so all the counsel of Ahithophel was esteemed both by David and by Absalom.

¹² For it is not an enemy that taunts me, or I could bear it. It is not one who hates me that magnifies himself over me, or I could hide myself from him. ¹³ But it is you, a man my equal, my friend and confidant. ¹⁴ We who would take sweet counsel together; in the house* of God we would walk with the throng.

²⁴ A man of many friends will come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

¹⁰ For I hear the rumor of many, "Terror is from all around, denounce him,* yes, let us denounce him!" _⌊All my close friends_⌋* are watchers of my stumbling, saying, "perhaps he can be persuaded, and we can prevail over him, and we can take our revenge on him."

⁵ Do not put faith in a friend; put no trust in a close friend. Guard the doorways of your mouth from the one who lies in your lap. ⁶ For a son treats a father with contempt; a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; the enemies of a man are the men of his own house.

²¹ "And brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his children, and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death,

¹⁸ "I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, 'The one who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'*

³¹ _⌊Have the people of my tent not said_⌋,* '_⌊O that_⌋* someone* had not been satisfied with his meat'? ³² An alien has not lodged in the street; I have opened my door to the traveler.

³ Be gracious to us, O Yahweh, be gracious to us, for long enough we have had our fill of contempt.

¹⁵ Then* the Sabeans _⌊attacked_⌋,* and they took them, and they slew the servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋.* But* I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁶ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens, and it blazed up against the sheep and goats and against the servants, and it consumed them. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁷ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three divisions, and they made a raid on the camels, and they carried them away, and they struck your servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋,* but I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

¹⁹ And behold,* a great wind came from across the desert, and it struck the four corners of the house _⌊so that_⌋* it fell upon the young people, and they died. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

⁹ Then* his wife said to him, "Are you still persisting in your blamelessness? _⌊Curse_⌋* God and die." ¹⁰ So* he said to her, "You speak like one of the foolish women speaks. Indeed, should we receive the good from God, but* not receive the evil?" In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

¹ "My spirit is pulled down; my days are extinguished; the graveyard is for me.

²³ Then he went up from there to Bethel; as he was going up along the way, young boys came out from the city and mocked at him and said to him, "Go up, baldhead; go up, baldhead!"

⁵ And the people will be oppressed _⌊by each other_⌋* and a man by his neighbor. The boy will act arrogantly toward the elder, and the dishonorable toward the honorable.

¹⁴ "Loyal love* should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if* he forsakes the fear of Shaddai. ¹⁵ My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis* they flow away,

⁹ Even _⌊my close friend_⌋,* whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

²⁰ He has put forth his hands against _⌊his friends_⌋;* he has defiled his covenant.

⁴ In return for my love they accuse me, though I am in prayer.* ⁵ So they inflicted evil against me in return for good and hatred in return for my love.

⁴⁸ But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

⁴ Then* Satan* answered him and said, "Skin for skin! All that _⌊that_⌋* man has he will give for his life. ⁵ But stretch out* your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."* ⁶ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "_⌊All right_⌋,* he is in your _⌊power_⌋.* Only spare his life."

⁵ My body is clothed with maggots and clods of dust; my skin hardens, then* it gives way again.

³⁰ My skin turns black on me, and my bones burn with heat.

¹⁹ "And he is reproved with pain on his bed, even* with the strife of his bones continually, ²⁰ _⌊so that_⌋* his life loathes bread, and his inner self* loathes _⌊appetizing food_⌋.* ²¹ His flesh is wasted away from sight, and his bones, which are invisible, are bared. ²² And _⌊he_⌋* draws near to the pit and his life to the killers.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart is like wax; it is melted _⌊within me_⌋.* ¹⁵ My strength is dry like a potsherd, and my tongue is sticking to my jaws; and you have placed me in the dust of death. ¹⁶ Because dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has encircled me. Like the lion* they are at my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I can count all my bones; they gaze, they look at me.

³ When I kept silent, my bones were worn out due to my groaning all the day. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me. My vigor was changed into the dry heat of summer. Selah

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation. There is no health in my bones because of my sin.

³ for my days vanish in smoke, and my bones are charred like a hearth.

⁵ Because of the sound of my groaning my bones* cling to my skin.*

⁴ He has worn out my flesh and skin, he has broken my bones.

⁸ Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are not recognized in the streets; their skin has shriveled on their bones, it has become dry like wood.

¹⁰ Our skin is hot like an oven because of the scorching famine.

¹¹ But,* on the other hand, stretch out* your hand and touch _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."

⁵ But stretch out* your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."*

¹⁰ So* he said to her, "You speak like one of the foolish women speaks. Indeed, should we receive the good from God, but* not receive the evil?" In all this, Job did not sin with his lips.

⁴ for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

¹⁴ "Loyal love* should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if* he forsakes the fear of Shaddai.

² For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; if a member* is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

³ Remember the prisoners, as though you were fellow-prisoners; remember* the mistreated, as though you yourselves also are being mistreated* in the body.

¹⁶ And if my head grows bold, you would hunt me as the lion in its prime; _⌊and you repeat your exploits against me_⌋.*

²⁵ Will you* terrify a blown leaf? And will you* pursue dry stubble?

³¹ _⌊Have the people of my tent not said_⌋,* '_⌊O that_⌋* someone* had not been satisfied with his meat'?

²⁶ because they persecute those whom you, yourself, have struck, and they tell of the pain of those you have wounded.

³ and who eat the flesh of my people, and strip their skin from them, and break their bones, and chop them like meat in the pot, and like flesh in the midst of a cooking pot."

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written,

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Take yourself a large tablet and write on it with a common stylus pen: Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz.

⁸ Now go, write it on a tablet with them, and inscribe it on a scroll, _⌊that_⌋* it may be _⌊for the time to come_⌋,* forever, forever.

¹¹ As the work of a skilled stone craftsman, with seal engravings you will engrave on the two stones the names of the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* you will make them mounted in gold filigree settings. ¹² And you will set the two stones on the ephod's shoulder pieces as stones of remembrance for the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and Aaron will bear their names before Yahweh on his two shoulder pieces for remembrance.

²¹ The stones will be according to the names of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* twelve according to their names, with seal engravings, each according to its name they will be for the twelve tribes.

¹⁶ And the tablets, they were the work of God; and the writing, it was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.

² And then on the day that you cross the Jordan to the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you, then you shall set up _⌊for yourselves_⌋* large stones, and you shall paint* them with lime, ³ and you shall write on them all the words of this law at your crossing, so that you may come into the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,* _⌊promised_⌋* to you.

⁸ You shall write on the stone all of the words of this law very clearly."

¹ "The sin of Judah is written with an iron stylus, with a point of diamond it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of their altars.

¹⁵ And I will put hostility between you and between the woman, and between your offspring* and between her offspring;* he will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel."

¹⁸ All the nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring, because you have listened to my voice."

¹⁹ So now look, my witness is in the heavens, and he who vouches for me is in the heights.

²³ "If there is a messenger beside him, a mediator, one of a thousand,* to declare to a human being his uprightness ²⁴ _⌊so that_⌋* he is gracious to him, and he says, 'Deliver him from descending into the pit; I have found a ransom.'

¹⁴ Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your presence, O Yahweh, my rock and my redeemer.

³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and God Most High their redeemer.

¹¹ For their redeemer is strong, he himself will plead their cause against you.

¹⁴ Thus says Yahweh, your redeemer, the holy one of Israel: "For your sake I will send to Babylon, and I will cause all of them to fall down as fugitives, and _⌊the Chaldeans_⌋,* their rejoicing on the ships.

⁵ For your husband* is your maker,* his name is Yahweh of hosts; and your redeemer is the holy one of Israel, he is called the God of all of the earth.

²⁰ "And a redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who turn away from transgression,"
_⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ²¹ "And as for me, this is my covenant with them, says Yahweh:
my spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have placed in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, or* from the mouths* of your _⌊children_⌋,* or* from the mouths* of _⌊your children's children_⌋,"* says Yahweh, "from now on and forever."

³⁴ Their redeemer is strong, his name is Yahweh of hosts. Surely he will plead their case, in order to make peace for the earth, but to cause unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.

²² For the Father does not judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ in order that all people* will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. The one who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴ Truly, truly I say to you that the one who hears my word and who believes the one who sent me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. ²⁵ "Truly, truly I say to you, that an hour is coming—and now is here—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and the ones who hear will live. ²⁶ For just as the Father has life in himself, thus also he has granted to the Son to have life in himself. ²⁷ And he has granted him authority to carry out judgment, because he is the Son of Man. ²⁸ "Do not be astonished at this, because an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹ and they will come out—those who have done good things to a resurrection of life, but those who have practiced evil things to a resurrection of judgment.

⁷ in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace,

¹⁴ And Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about* these people, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with tens of thousands of his holy ones

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices. Yes, my body will dwell in safety,

¹¹ You will make known to me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures forever.

¹⁵ By contrast, I in righteousness shall see your face. Upon awakening I will be satisfied seeing your form.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God.

¹² For now we see through a mirror _⌊indirectly_⌋*, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know completely, just as I have also been completely known.

⁵³ For it is necessary for this perishable body to put on incorruptibility, and this mortal body to put on immortality.

²¹ who will transform our humble body to be conformed to his glorious body, in accordance with the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

² Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that whenever he is revealed we will be like him, because we will see him just as he is.

⁷ Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even every one who pierced him, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over him.
Yes, amen.

¹⁷ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star will go out from Jacob, and a scepter will rise from Israel; it will crush the foreheads of Moab and destroy all the children of Seth.

²⁶ My flesh and heart failed, but God is the _⌊strength_⌋* of my heart and my reward forever.

¹⁹ Your dead shall live; _⌊their corpses_⌋* shall rise. Wake up and sing for joy, dwellers of the dust, for your dew is _⌊celestial dew_⌋,* and the earth will give birth to dead spirits.*

¹³ All of Israel will mourn for him, and they will bury him. This one alone will come to a tomb for Jeroboam, because a good thing has been found in him by Yahweh the God of Israel in the house of Israel.

²² Why do you* pursue me like God? And are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁷ "Will you* speak falsely for God? And will you* speak deceitfully for him? ⁸ _⌊Will you* show partiality for him_⌋?* Or do you* want to plead God's case? ⁹ Will it be well, if he examines you?* Or can you* deceive him like deceiving a human being? ¹⁰ "Surely he will rebuke you* if _⌊you* show partiality_⌋* in secret. ¹¹ Will not his majesty terrify you,* and his dread fall upon you?*

²² _⌊He cannot trust that he will return_⌋* from darkness, and he himself* is destined for the sword.

⁴ Does he reprove you because of your reverence or enter into judgment with you?

⁵ Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

⁷ But Yahweh sits enthroned forever. He has established his throne for judgment.

¹⁰ The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he will wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ And people* will say, "Surely there is a _⌊reward_⌋* for the righteous. Surely there is a God who judges in the land."*

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth! Follow the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes— but know that God will bring you into judgment for all these things.

¹⁴ For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

¹ "Do not judge, so that you will not be judged. ² For by what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and by what measure you measure out, it will be measured out to you.

¹ Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except by God, and those that exist are put in place by God. ² So then, the one who resists authority resists the ordinance which is from God, and those who resist will receive condemnation on themselves. ³ For rulers are not a cause of terror for a good deed, but for bad conduct. So do you want not to be afraid of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from it, ⁴ for it is God's servant to you for what is good. But if you do what is bad, be afraid, because it does not bear the sword to no purpose. For it is God's servant, the one who avenges for punishment on the one who does what is bad.

¹¹ Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. The one who speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of the law.* ¹² There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your* neighbor?
