What provokes you that you answer? ⁴ I myself* also could talk as you, if _⌊you were in my place_⌋;* I could join against you with words, and I could shake at you with my head. ⁵ I could* encourage you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips would* ease the pain. ⁶ If I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I cease, how much will leave me? ⁷ "Surely now he has worn me out; you* have devastated all my company. ⁸ Thus* you shriveled me up;* it became a witness. And my leanness has risen up against me; it testifies to my face. ⁹ His wrath has torn, and he has been hostile toward me; he gnashed at me with his teeth. My foe sharpens his eyes against me. ¹⁰ They gaped at me with their mouth; they struck my cheeks with disgrace; they have massed themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivers me to an evil one, and he casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² "I was at ease, then* he broke me in two, and he seized me by my neck; then* he shattered me and set me up as a target for him. ¹³ His archers surround me; he slashes open my kidneys, and he does not have compassion; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breached me _⌊breach upon breach_⌋;* he rushes at me like a warrior. ¹⁵ "I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and I have inserted _⌊my pride_⌋* in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is red because of weeping, and deep shadows are on my eyelids, ¹⁷ _⌊although_⌋* violence is not on my hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ "O earth, you should not cover my blood, and let there be no place* for my cry for help. ¹⁹ So now look, my witness is in the heavens, and he who vouches for me is in the heights. ²⁰ My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God, ²¹ and it argues* for a mortal with God, and as _⌊a human_⌋* for his friend. ²² Indeed, after _⌊a few years_⌋* have come, then* I will go the way from which I will not return.

⁶ Can tasteless food be eaten without* salt, or is there taste in the white of a marshmallow plant?

²⁵ How painful are _⌊upright words_⌋!* But* what does _⌊your reproof_⌋* reprove?

² "Should an abundance of words go unanswered, or _⌊a man full of talk_⌋* be vindicated?* ³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?*

⁴ "But* you* _⌊whitewash with lies_⌋;* all of you* are _⌊worthless healers_⌋.* ⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* you* would keep completely silent, and that it would become wisdom for you.*

² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you* torment me* and crush me with words? ³ These ten times you* have disgraced me; you* are not ashamed that you* have attacked* me.

² "How you* have helped _⌊one who has no power_⌋!* How you* have assisted the arm _⌊that has no strength_⌋!* ³ How you* have advised _⌊one who has no wisdom_⌋!* And what sound wisdom you* have made known _⌊in abundance_⌋!*

²⁶ because they persecute those whom you, yourself, have struck, and they tell of the pain of those you have wounded.

¹⁶ The latter do so from love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.

¹⁹ Understand this, my dear brothers: every person must be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove my words* and consider the words of a desperate man as wind?

² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you say these things, and the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?

² "Should the wise answer with windy knowledge, and should he fill his stomach with the east wind?

³ I hear discipline that insults me, and a spirit beyond my understanding answers me.

³ and _⌊he became angry_⌋* at his three friends because they had not found an answer, and they had declared Job guilty. ⁴ Thus Elihu had waited for Job _⌊to speak_⌋* because _⌊they were older than he_⌋.* ⁵ When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men, _⌊he became angry_⌋.* ⁶ Then Elihu the son of Barakel the Buzite _⌊spoke up_⌋* and said,

⁴⁶ And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask him any more questions.*

¹¹ whom it is necessary to silence, whoever are ruining whole families by* teaching things which must not be taught for the sake of dishonest gain.

⁸ a sound message beyond reproach, in order that _⌊an opponent_⌋* may be put to shame, because he* has nothing bad to say concerning us.

²¹ This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him:
She despises you, she scorns you, the virgin daughter of Zion. Behind you the daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head.

² "If only my vexation could be well weighed, and my calamity could be lifted up together with it in the balances, ³ for then it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; therefore my words have been rash, ⁴ for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me. ⁵ Does the wild ass bray over grass, or the ox bellow over its fodder?

¹⁴ "Loyal love* should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if* he forsakes the fear of Shaddai.

² "Should an abundance of words go unanswered, or _⌊a man full of talk_⌋* be vindicated?*

¹⁶ _⌊therefore_⌋* Job opens his mouth in empty talk— without knowledge he multiplies words."

⁷ All who see me mock me. They open wide their lips; they shake the head, saying:

¹⁴ You have made us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

²⁵ And so I am a disgrace to them; when they see me, they shake their heads.*

¹⁹ In many words, transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is prudent.

¹⁴ The fool _⌊talks too much_⌋,* for no one knows what will be. Who can tell anyone what will happen _⌊in the future_⌋?*

¹⁶ To make their land a horror, an object of whistling for eternity. All who pass by it will be appalled, and he will shake his head.

¹⁵ They clap hands over you, all who pass along the way; they hiss and they shake their head, at the daughter of Jerusalem. Is this the city of which it is said, "A perfection of beauty, a joy for all the earth?"

¹⁵ This is the city of rejoicing that lived securely; the one saying in her heart, "_⌊I am, and there is none besides me_⌋."* How she has become a desolation, a lair for wild animals! Everyone who passes by her hisses and shakes his fist.

¹² Therefore in all things, whatever you want that people should do to you, thus also you do to them. For this is the law and the prophets.

³⁹ And those who passed by reviled him, shaking their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, "The one who would destroy the temple and rebuild it* in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; if a member* is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

³ Look, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands. ⁴ Your words have raised up the one who stumbles, and you have strengthened knees giving way.

²⁵ I chose their way, and I sat as head, and I dwelled like a king among the troops, like one who comforts mourners.

¹⁴ Wait for Yahweh. Be strong and let your heart show strength, and wait for Yahweh.

⁹ Perfume and incense will gladden a heart, and the pleasantness of one's friend is _⌊personal advice_⌋.*

¹⁷ As iron sharpens* iron, so _⌊one man sharpens another_⌋.*

³ Strengthen the weak hands and make the staggering knees firm. ⁴ Say to those who are hasty of heart,
"Be strong; you must not fear! Look! your God will come with vengeance, with _⌊divine retribution_⌋.* He _⌊is the one who_⌋* will come and save you."

¹ Brothers, even if a person is caught in some trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a person in a spirit of humility, looking out for yourself, lest you also be tempted.

I cry out with my voice to God; with my voice to God, that he may hear me. ² In the day I have trouble, I seek* the Lord. At night my hand stretches out _⌊continually_⌋;* my soul refuses to be comforted. ³ I remember God and I groan loudly; I meditate and my spirit grows faint. ⁴ You hold open my eyelids. I am troubled and cannot speak. ⁵ I think about the days from long ago, the years of ancient times. ⁶ I remember my song in the night. With my heart I meditate, and my spirit searches to understand. ⁷ Will the Lord reject us forever, and will he never be pleased with us again? ⁸ Has his loyal love ceased forever? Is his promise* ended throughout generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to have compassion? Or has he closed off his mercies in anger? Selah

¹⁵ I am afflicted and perishing from my youth. I bear your terrors. I am distraught.* ¹⁶ Your burning anger has passed over me; your sudden fears have destroyed me. ¹⁷ They surround me like water all the day; they circle about me altogether. ¹⁸ You have removed loved one and friend far from me, my acquaintances far from my darkness.

¹⁵ Then* the Sabeans _⌊attacked_⌋,* and they took them, and they slew the servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋.* But* I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁶ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens, and it blazed up against the sheep and goats and against the servants, and it consumed them. ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the _⌊weary_⌋* are at rest;

³ So _⌊I had to inherit_⌋* months of worthlessness, and nights of misery are apportioned to me.

¹⁶ I loathe my life; I would not live forever; depart from me, for my days are a breath.

⁵ when Shaddaiwas still with me, my children were all around me, ⁶ when my paths were washed in sour milk, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me. ⁷ "At my going out the gate to the city, I secured my seat in the square. ⁸ Young men saw me and stepped aside, and the aged rose up and stood. ⁹ Officials refrained from talking, and they laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voices* of nobles were hushed, and their tongue stuck to their palate. ¹¹ "When the ear heard and commended me, and the eye saw and testified in support of me ¹² because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved* the orphan for whom there was no helper. ¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a headband. ¹⁵ "I was eyes to the blind, and I was feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor, and I investigated _⌊the stranger's_⌋* legal dispute. ¹⁷ And I broke the evil one's jaw bones, and I made his prey drop from his teeth. ¹⁸ "And I thought, 'I will pass away in my nest, and like the phoenix I shall multiply my days. ¹⁹ My roots were open to water, and dew spent the night on my branches; ²⁰ My glory was new with me, and _⌊I was revitalized regularly_⌋.'* ²¹ "They listened to me and waited, and they kept silent for my counsel. ²² After my word, they did not speak again, and my word dropped down like dew upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the spring rain. ²⁴ I smiled for them when they had no confidence in anything, and they did not extinguish the light of my face. ²⁵ I chose their way, and I sat as head, and I dwelled like a king among the troops, like one who comforts mourners.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; _⌊I flood_⌋* my bed every night. With my tears _⌊I drench_⌋* my couch. ⁷ My eye wastes away because of vexation; it grows old because of all my oppressors.

¹¹ Do not despise the discipline of Yahweh, my child. Do not be weary of his reproof ¹² because whomever Yahweh will love, he will rebuke, as a father delights in his son.

⁴ The Lord Yahweh has given me the tongue of a pupil, to know how to help the weary with a word. He awakens _⌊morning by morning_⌋,* awakens an ear for me to listen as do the pupils.

¹³ And I also _⌊have made you sick by striking you down_⌋,* making you desolate because of your sins.

²¹ I went away full, but Yahweh brought me back empty-handed! Why call me Naomi _⌊when Yahweh has testified against me_⌋* and Shaddai* has brought calamity upon me?"

¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and you increase your vexation against me; _⌊relief forces_⌋* are against me.

²⁰ My bones* cling to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

¹⁵ So he gave to them their request, but he sent leanness into their souls.*

²⁴ My knees _⌊buckle_⌋* from fasting, and my body grows lean without fat.

¹⁶ Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, will send leanness among his sturdy warriors, and a burning like the burning of fire will burn under his glory.

¹⁶ We hear songs from the _⌊edge_⌋* of the earth: "Glory to the righteous one!" But I say, "Ruin to me! Ruin to me! Woe to me! The treacherous ones deal treacherously, and the treacherous ones deal treacherously with treachery!"

²⁷ in order that he might present to himself the church glorious, not having a spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she may be holy and blameless.

¹⁶ And if my head grows bold, you would hunt me as the lion in its prime; _⌊and you repeat your exploits against me_⌋.* ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and you increase your vexation against me; _⌊relief forces_⌋* are against me.

²⁴ Why do you* hide your* face and count me as your* enemy?

²⁷ And you* put my feet in the block, and you* watch all my paths; you carve a mark on the soles of my feet.*

⁴ "You who are tearing _⌊yourself_⌋* in your* anger, will the earth be forsaken because of you?* Or* will the rock be removed from its place?

¹¹ and he has kindled his wrath against me, and _⌊he has counted me as one of his foes_⌋.*

¹⁶ Among the ungodly of the mockers at feasts,* they gnashed at me with their teeth.

¹² The wicked plans evil against the righteous, and gnashes at him with his teeth.

²² Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there will be none to deliver.

¹⁶ They have opened their mouths against you, all your enemies. They hiss and gnash a tooth, and they say, "We have destroyed her! Surely this is the day we have hoped for; we have found it, we have seen it!"

¹⁰ To me he is like a bear lying in wait, a lion in hiding.

¹⁴ Because I will be like a lion to Ephraim and like a fierce strong lion to the house of Judah. I myself will tear and I will go; I will carry off, and there is no one who delivers.

¹ Come, let us return to Yahweh; because it is he who has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck us down and will bind us up.

⁸ You should not rejoice over me, O my enemy! When I fall I will stand up; when I sit in darkness Yahweh will be a light for me.

⁵⁴ Now when they* heard these things, they were infuriated in their hearts and gnashed their* teeth at him.

²⁴ Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah came near and slapped Micaiah on the cheek and said, "When did the Spirit of Yahweh pass from me to speak with you?"

²³ Then Zedekiah the son of Kenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, "_⌊Which way_⌋* did the Spirit of Yahweh come from me to speak to you?"

¹³ They open their mouth against me like a lion tearing and roaring.

¹⁶ Because dogs have surrounded me; a gang of evildoers has encircled me. Like the lion* they are at my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I can count all my bones; they gaze, they look at me.

¹⁵ But at my stumbling they rejoiced and gathered together; smiters whom I did not know gathered against me. They tore and did not cease.

²¹ They also made wide their mouths* against me. They said, "Aha! Aha! Our eyes have seen it."

²¹ They band together against the life of the righteous, and declare the blameless guilty of blood.*

⁶ I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out my _⌊beard_⌋;* I did not hide my face from insults and spittle.

³⁰ Let him give a cheek to his smiter, let him be filled with disgrace.

¹ * Now muster troops, O daughter of troops; a siege he puts against us. They strike the ruler of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

⁶⁷ Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists, and they slapped him,*

³⁵ And the people stood there watching, but the rulers also ridiculed him,* saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if this man is the Christ* of God, the Chosen One!" ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming up and* offering him sour wine

²² Now when* he had said these things, one of the officers who was standing by gave a slap in the face to Jesus, saying, "Do you reply to the high priest in this way?"

²⁷ For in truth both Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed,

² So the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near him to strike his mouth.

²⁰ For you put up with it if someone enslaves you, if someone devours you, if someone takes advantage of you, if someone is presumptious toward you, if someone strikes you in the face.

¹⁸ You have explained to me today that you have dealt well with me, how* Yahweh delivered me into your hand but you did not kill me.

¹³ And then there was one day when* his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their firstborn brother's house. ¹⁴ And a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the female donkeys were feeding _⌊beside them_⌋.*

⁷ So* Satan* went out from _⌊Yahweh's presence_⌋,* and he inflicted Job with loathsome skin sores from the sole of his foot up to the crown of his head.

¹⁴ See, he* travails with* evil. He is pregnant with trouble, and he gives birth to deception.

¹² Do not give me over to the desire of my enemies, because false witnesses have arisen against me, and each breathing out violence.*

⁸ And you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a broad place.

¹⁶ So then he handed him over to them in order that he could be crucified.

³² For God confined them all in disobedience, in order that he could have mercy on them all.

⁷ even because of the extraordinary degree of the revelations. Therefore, so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan, in order that it would torment me so that I would not exalt myself.

² And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. ³ Then* his livestock came to be seven thousand sheep and goats and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs* of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and he had very many slaves, and that man was greater than all the people of the east.

²⁶ I am not at ease, and I am not at peace, and I do not have rest, thus* turmoil has come."

¹⁰ The roar of the lion and the voice of a lion in its prime, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.

¹² Am I the sea, or a sea monster, that you set a guard over me?

²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you, watcher of humanity? Why have you made me as a target for yourself, so that* I have become a burden to myself?*

¹⁷ who crushes me with a tempest and multiplies* my wounds without cause.

²⁶ he _⌊stubbornly_⌋* runs against him _⌊with his thick-bossed shield_⌋.*

³ when his shining lamp was over my head— by his light I walked through darkness—

¹⁸ "And I thought, 'I will pass away in my nest, and like the phoenix I shall multiply my days. ¹⁹ My roots were open to water, and dew spent the night on my branches;

¹⁹ But you have crushed us in a place of jackals, and have covered us with deep shadow.

⁴ He has worn out my flesh and skin, he has broken my bones.

¹¹ He has forsaken my way and torn me to pieces; he has caused me desolation. ¹² He has bent his bow and set me as the target for the arrow.

⁷ When they took hold of you with the hand, you snapped, and you split their every shoulder. And when they leaned on you, you broke, and you caused all of their loins to wobble."

⁴⁴ And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls—it will crush him!"

⁴ who risked their own necks for my life, for which not only I am thankful, but also all the churches of the Gentiles;

²³ _⌊The archers_⌋* fiercely attacked him. They shot arrows at him and were hostile to him.

²⁰ Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him, for by then the anger of Yahweh will smoke, and his passion against that man and all the curses written in this scroll will descend on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under heaven.

⁴ for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

¹⁰ But* it will still be my consolation, and I would recoil in _⌊unrelenting_⌋* pain, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

²⁷ whom _⌊I will see for myself_⌋,* and whom my eyes will see and not a stranger.* _⌊My heart faints within me_⌋.*

²⁵ He draws it forth, and it comes out from his body, and the glittering point comes from his gall-bladder; terrors come upon him.

¹² If he* does not repent, he* will sharpen his sword. He has bent his bow and he has _⌊strung_⌋* it. ¹³ And he has prepared for him weapons of death. He has made his arrows fiery shafts.

¹¹ My eyes have _⌊spent all their tears_⌋;* _⌊my stomach_⌋* is in torment, _⌊my heart_⌋* is poured out on the earth because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because child and babe faint in the public squares of a city.

¹³ He shot _⌊the arrows of his quiver_⌋* into my kidneys.

¹¹ Therefore _⌊as surely as I live_⌋,* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, _⌊Surely_⌋* because you have defiled my sanctuary with all of your vile idols and with all of your detestable things, _⌊now indeed I_⌋* will reduce, and my eye will not take pity, and surely I will show no compassion.

³² Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things?

⁵ and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a proclaimer of righteousness, _⌊and seven others_⌋* when he* brought a flood on the world of the ungodly,

⁸ And _⌊he gave them a thorough beating_⌋,* and he went down and stayed in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

⁷ Deep is calling to deep at* the thunder of your waterfalls. All your breakers and your waves have passed over me.

³ Surely he has turned his hand against me, all day long. ⁴ He has worn out my flesh and skin, he has broken my bones. ⁵ _⌊He has besieged_⌋* and engulfed me with bitterness and hardship.

⁷ They run like mighty warriors,* they scale the wall like men of war; each goes on its own way, and they do not swerve from their paths.

³⁴ And Jacob tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days.

¹⁰ Yahweh will shatter* his adversaries;* he will thunder against them in the heavens. Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king and will exalt the might of his anointed one.

²⁷ When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes and put sackcloth over his flesh, fasted, lay in the sackcloth, and went about dejectedly.

¹⁹ He has cast me into the dirt, and I have become like dust* and ashes.

⁵ let the enemy of my soul pursue, and overtake and trample my life into the ground, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah

⁵ Do not lift up high your* horn. Do not speak with _⌊arrogant pride_⌋.'"*

¹⁰ "And all the horns of the wicked I will cut off. The horns of the righteous will be lifted up."

¹² And the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, called on that day
for weeping and mourning, and for baldness and girding _⌊with_⌋* sackcloth.

⁷ And my eye has grown dim from grief, and the limbs of my body are all* like a shadow.

⁹ Be gracious to me, O Yahweh, because I have distress. My eye wastes away because of vexation, along with my soul and my _⌊body_⌋.*

³ When I kept silent, my bones were worn out due to my groaning all the day.

³ I am weary with my calling out; my throat is parched. My eyes are exhausted in my waiting for my God.

³ for my days vanish in smoke, and my bones are charred like a hearth. ⁴ My heart is struck like grass and withers. Indeed, I forget to eat* my bread. ⁵ Because of the sound of my groaning my bones* cling to my skin.*

⁹ Indeed, I eat ashes like bread and mix my drink with tears*

³ The ropes of death encircled me, and the distresses of Sheol found me. I found trouble and grief.

¹⁴ Just as many were appalled at you— such was his appearance beyond human disfigurement, and his form beyond the sons of mankind—

¹⁶ For these things, I am weeping, _⌊my eyes flow with tears_⌋;* because a comforter is far from me, one to restore my life. My sons are desolate because the enemy has prevailed.

¹ And Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God from the belly of the fish ² and said,
"I called _⌊from my distress_⌋* to Yahweh, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol* I cried for help— you heard my voice. ³ And you threw me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the sea currents surrounded me; all your breakers and your surging waves passed over me. ⁴ And I said, 'I am banished* from your sight; how* _⌊will I continue to look_⌋* _⌊on your holy temple_⌋?'* ⁵ The waters encompassed me up to my neck; the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. ⁶ I went down to the foundations of the mountains; the Underworld—its bars were around me forever. But you brought up my life from the pit, Yahweh my God. ⁷ When my life was ebbing away from me, I remembered Yahweh, and my prayer came to you, _⌊to your holy temple_⌋.* ⁸ Those who worship vain idols forsake their loyal love.* ⁹ But I, with a voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you; I will fulfill what I have vowed. Deliverance* belongs to Yahweh!" ¹⁰ And Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out on the dry land.

³⁴ And he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake."

⁵ If you yourself* would seek God, then* you would plead to Shaddai for grace. ⁶ If you are pure and upright, indeed,* now he will rouse himself for you, and he will restore your righteous abode.

¹⁴ if iniquity* is in your hand, put it far away, and you must not let wickedness reside in your tents—

²⁰ "All of the wicked one's days he is writhing, even* through the number of years that are laid up for the tyrant.

³⁴ for the company of the godless is barren, and fire consumes the tents of those who accept bribes.

²⁷ "Look, I know your* thoughts and the schemes you devise against me. ²⁸ For you say, 'Where is the nobleman's house, and where are _⌊the tents in which the wicked dwell_⌋?'*

⁵ Is not your wickedness great, and there is no end to your iniquities? ⁶ "Indeed, you have required a pledge from your family for nothing, and you have stripped off the clothes of the naked. ⁷ You have given no water for the weary to drink, and you withheld food from the hungry. ⁸ And the land _⌊belongs to the man of power_⌋,* and _⌊the favored_⌋* lives in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed.

⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness, and I will not let it go; my heart will not blame any of my days. ⁷ "Let my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unrighteous,

¹² because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved* the orphan for whom there was no helper. ¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a headband. ¹⁵ "I was eyes to the blind, and I was feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor, and I investigated _⌊the stranger's_⌋* legal dispute. ¹⁷ And I broke the evil one's jaw bones, and I made his prey drop from his teeth.

¹ "I made a covenant with my eyes, so* how could I look closely upon a virgin? ² And what is the portion of God from above or* the heritage of Shaddai from on high? ³ Is not disaster for the evil one and ruin for the workers of mischief? ⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps? ⁵ "If I have walked with falseness, and my foot has hastened to deceit, ⁶ let him weigh me in the balance of justice, and let God know my blamelessness. ⁷ If my steps have turned aside from the way, and my heart has walked after my eyes, and my hand has clung to a spot, ⁸ let me sow, and let another eat, and let my crops be rooted out. ⁹ "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and at my neighbor's doorway I have lain in wait, ¹⁰ let my wife grind for another, and let other men kneel over her, ¹¹ for that is a shameful act, and that is _⌊a criminal offense_⌋.* ¹² Indeed, that is a fire that will consume up to Abaddon, and it would uproot all my crop. ¹³ "If I have rejected my male or* female slave's case when their complaint was against me, ¹⁴ then* what shall I do when God rises up? And when he enquires, how shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he who made me in the womb make them? And did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ "If I have withheld the desire of the poor from them, or* I have caused the widow's eyes to fail, ¹⁷ or I have eaten my morsel _⌊alone_⌋,* and the orphan has not eaten from it ¹⁸ (for from my childhood he* _⌊grew up with_⌋* me like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided her*), ¹⁹ if I have seen the one who perishes because of no clothing or* that there is no covering for the poor, ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me, or* by means of my sheep's fleece he has warmed himself, ²¹ if I have raised my hand against an orphan because I saw my supporters at the gate, ²² then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and let my arm be broken from its socket. ²³ Indeed, the disaster from God was a dread for me, and _⌊I was powerless_⌋* because of his majesty. ²⁴ "If I have made gold my trust, or* I have called fine gold my security, ²⁵ if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great or* because my hand found a fortune, ²⁶ if I looked at the sun when it shone or* at the moon moving in splendor, ²⁷ and _⌊I was secretly enticed_⌋,* and _⌊my hand threw them a kiss_⌋,* ²⁸ this also is an iniquity to be judged, for I have deceived God above. ²⁹ "If I have rejoiced at the ruin of the one who hated me or* have exulted when evil overtook him— ³⁰ no,* I have not allowed my mouth to sin, to ask his life with a curse. ³¹ _⌊Have the people of my tent not said_⌋,* '_⌊O that_⌋* someone* had not been satisfied with his meat'? ³² An alien has not lodged in the street; I have opened my door to the traveler. ³³ _⌊Have I concealed_⌋* my transgressions as other human beings to hide my iniquity in my bosom ³⁴ because I dreaded the great multitude, and the contempt of clans terrified me, so that I kept quiet, I did not go out of the doorway? ³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written, ³⁶ I would _⌊surely_⌋* carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me like a crown. ³⁷ I would give him an account of my steps; I would approach him like a noble. ³⁸ If my land has cried out against me, and its furrows have wept together, ³⁹ if I have eaten its yield without payment, or* I have caused the breath of its owners to die, ⁴⁰ let thorns grow in place of wheat and noxious weeds in place of barley." The words of Job are ended.

³ O Yahweh, my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands, ⁴ if I have repaid _⌊my ally_⌋* with harm, or if I have plundered my enemy without cause, ⁵ let the enemy of my soul pursue, and overtake and trample my life into the ground, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah

¹⁷ All this has befallen us, though we have not forgotten you, and we have not been false to your covenant. ¹⁸ Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not turned aside from your way. ¹⁹ But you have crushed us in a place of jackals, and have covered us with deep shadow. ²⁰ If we had forgotten the name of our God, or had spread out our hands in prayer to a foreign god, ²¹ would not God discover this, for he knows the secrets of the heart?

¹⁸ If I had considered evil in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. ¹⁹ However, God has listened; he has attended to the sound of my prayer.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination of Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

⁶ Their webs cannot become clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and deeds* of violence are in their hands.

⁸ And the human beings and the animals must be covered with sackcloth! And they must call forcefully to God, and each must turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his* hands.

⁸ Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and dispute.

¹¹ So now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive the blood of your brother from your hand.

⁵ Do not cover their guilt, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before you. They have _⌊provoked the builders to anger_⌋.*

⁹ Will God hear his cry of distress when distress comes upon him?

¹⁵ And when you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers,* I will not be listening. Your hands are full of blood.

²¹ For look! Yahweh is about to come out from his place to punish the iniquity of the inhabitants* of the earth against him, and the earth will disclose her blood and will no longer cover her slain.

⁹ Then you shall call, and Yahweh himself will answer. You shall cry for help, and he will say, 'Here I am!' If you remove from among you the yoke, the _⌊finger-pointing_⌋* and _⌊evil speech_⌋,* ¹⁰ if* you offer your soul to the hungry, and you satisfy the appetite of the afflicted, then* your light shall rise in the darkness, and your darkness will be like noon.

²⁹ O land, land, land, hear the word of Yahweh.

⁷ For her blood was in the midst of her; _⌊she put it on a bare rock_⌋;* she did not pour it on the ground to cover it with dust.*

³ You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, in order that you may spend it on your pleasures. ⁴ Adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

⁵⁰ If you mistreat my daughters, and if you take wives besides my daughters, when there is no man with us, see—God is a witness between me and you."

⁵ So he said to them, "Yahweh is witness against you, and his anointed one is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." Then they said, "He is witness."

² "Domination and dread are with him who makes peace in his high heavens.

⁵ Who is like Yahweh our God, who is enthroned on high,*

⁹ For God, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, is my witness, how constantly I make mention of you,

¹ I am telling the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears witness to me in the Holy Spirit—

²³ But I call upon God as witness against my life, that in order to* spare you, I did not come again to Corinth.

³¹ The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is blessed _⌊forever_⌋*, knows that I am not lying.

⁵ _⌊For never_⌋* did we come with a word of flattery, just as you know, nor with a pretext of greediness (God is witness),

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we became to you who believe,

⁴ I am a laughingstock to my friends:* 'He calls on God, and he answers him.' A righteous, blameless man is a laughingstock. ⁵ _⌊Those at ease have contempt_⌋* for the thought of _⌊disaster_⌋,* but it is ready for those unstable of foot.

⁴ I myself* also could talk as you, if _⌊you were in my place_⌋;* I could join against you with words, and I could shake at you with my head.

² _⌊Surely_⌋* mockery is with me, and my eye _⌊rests_⌋* on their provocation.

⁴ In return for my love they accuse me, though I am in prayer.*

² I pour out my complaint before him; I declare my trouble before him.

⁴ He struggled with the angel and prevailed; he pleaded for his mercy. He met him at Bethel, and there he spoke with him.* ⁵ Yahweh the God of hosts, Yahweh is his renowned name!

¹¹ But they were filled with fury, and began discussing* with one another what they might do to Jesus. ¹² Now it happened that in these days he went away to the mountain to pray, and was spending the whole night in prayer to God.

⁷ who in the days of his flesh offered up both prayers and supplications, with loud crying and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard as a result of his reverence.

³⁴ May he remove his rod from me, and let his dread not terrify me; ³⁵ then I would speak and not fear him,* for _⌊in myself I am not fearful_⌋.*

³ But I would speak to Shaddai, and I desire to argue with God.

²² Then* call, and I myself* will answer; or let me speak, then* reply to me.

³ _⌊O that_⌋* I knew and that I might find him; O that I might come to his dwelling. ⁴ I would lay my case _⌊before him_⌋,* and I would fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I want to know the words with which he would answer me, and I want to understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his strength? No, but he himself* would give heed to me. ⁷ There an upright person could reason with him, and I would be acquitted forever by my judge.

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written,

¹ Then* Yahweh answered Job and said, ² "Shall a faultfinder contend with Shaddai? Anyone who argues with God must answer it." ³ So Job answered Yahweh and said, ⁴ "Look, I am insignificant. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; even* twice, but* I will not proceed."

¹⁰ Whatever is—it was already determined, _⌊what will be—it has already been decided_⌋.* As for man, he cannot argue against what is more powerful than him.

⁹ Woe to the one who strives with his _⌊maker_⌋,* a potsherd among* potsherds of earth! Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, 'What are you making?' and 'Your work has no hands'?

²⁰ On the contrary, O man, who are you who answers back to God? Will what is molded say to the one who molded it, "Why did you make me like this"?*

⁹ A cloud vanishes, and it goes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will not come up. ¹⁰ He does not return again to his house, and his place does not recognize him again.

⁵ If his days are determined, the number of his months is with you; you have appointed his boundaries, and he cannot cross them.

¹⁰ "But* a man dies, and he dwindles away; thus* a human being passes away, and where is he?*

¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I will wait, until the coming of my relief.

⁵ They are afraid of heights, and terrors are on the road. The almond tree blossoms, and the grasshopper draws itself along, and desire fails because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about in the streets.
