¹ The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the tenth year of Zedekiah the king of Judah, that was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. ² Now at that time the army of the king of Babylon was laying siege to Jerusalem and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah, ³ where Zedekiah, the king of Judah, had confined him, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Why are you prophesying, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Thus says Yahweh, "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it, ⁴ and Zedekiah, the king of Judah, will not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but surely he will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and _⌊he will speak face to face with him_⌋* and _⌊he will see him eye to eye_⌋,* ⁵ and to Babylon he will bring Zedekiah, and there he will be until my attending to him," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "If you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not be successful" '?" ⁶ And Jeremiah said, "The word of Yahweh came to me, _⌊saying_⌋,* ⁷ 'Look, Hanamel, the son of Shallum, your uncle, is going to come to you, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Buy for yourself my field that is at Anathoth, for _⌊you have_⌋* the right of redemption to buy it." '* ⁸ Then Hanamel, the son of my uncle, came to me, to the courtyard of the guard _⌊according to_⌋* the word of Yahweh, and he said to me, 'Please buy my field that is at Anathoth, that is in the land of Benjamin, for to you is the claim of possession, and to you the redemption; buy it* for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of Yahweh. ⁹ And I bought the field from Hanamel, the son of my uncle, that was at Anathoth. And I weighed out to him the money, seventeen silver shekels. ¹⁰ And I signed on the letter* and sealed it,* and I called witnesses as witness, and I weighed out the money on a set of scales. ¹¹ Then I took the deed* of the purchase, the sealed copy containing the commandments* and the rules, together with the one that was open. ¹² And I gave the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, _⌊in the presence of_⌋* Hanamel, the son of my uncle, and _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the witnesses who signed the deed of the purchase, _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the Judeans* who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard. ¹³ And I commanded Baruch _⌊in their presence_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* ¹⁴ 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, "Take these deeds,* this deed of the purchase, the sealed one, and this opened deed, and you must put them in an _⌊earthenware jar_⌋* so that they may be kept preserved many days." ¹⁵ For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: "Houses and fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land." ' ¹⁶ And I prayed to Yahweh—after giving my deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah—_⌊saying_⌋,* ¹⁷ 'Ah Lord Yahweh! Look, you made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. _⌊Nothing_⌋* is too difficult for you, ¹⁸ showing loyal love to the thousands, and repaying the guilt of _⌊parents_⌋* into the laps* of their children after them. Powerful, great, mighty, his name is Yahweh of hosts, ¹⁹ great in counsel and great in deed, whose eyes are opened to all the ways of the children of humankind, to give to each one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds, ²⁰ who accomplished signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, up to this day, and in Israel, and among humankind, and you have made for yourself a name, as it is this day. ²¹ And you brought out your people Israel from the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with an arm stretched out, and with great terror. ²² And you gave to them this land, which you swore to their ancestors* to give to them, a land flowing with milk and honey. ²³ And they entered and took possession of it, but they did not listen to your voice, and they did not follow your law. They did nothing of all that you commanded to them to do, and you caused to happen to them all this disaster. ²⁴ Look, the siege ramps have come up to the city to capture it, and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it, because of the sword, the famine, and the plague, and what you spoke happened, and look, you are seeing it.* ²⁵ Yet you have said to me, Lord Yahweh, "Buy for yourself the field with the money, and call witnesses as witness," though the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.'" ²⁶ And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, _⌊saying_⌋,* ²⁷ "Look, I am Yahweh, the God of all flesh; is _⌊anything_⌋* too difficult for me?" ²⁸ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh: "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. ²⁹ And the Chaldeans, who are fighting against this city, will come and set this city on fire, and they will burn it, and the houses where they have made smoke offerings on their roofs to Baal, and where they have devoted libations to other gods, in order to provoke me to anger. ³⁰ For the people* of Israel and the people* of Judah were doing only evil in my eyes from their youth, for the people* of Israel were only provoking me to anger by the work of their hands," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ³¹ "For this city has been for me a cause of my anger and of my wrath from the day that they built it even until this day, so I will remove it from my _⌊sight_⌋,* ³² because of all the evil of the people* of Israel and the people* of Judah that they did to provoke me to anger—they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, and the men* of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ³³ And they have turned to me their backs* and not their faces, though _⌊I have taught them over and over again_⌋,* but they were not listening to accept discipline. ³⁴ And they set up their abominations in the house that is called by my name, to defile it. ³⁵ And they built the high places of Baal that are in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to present as offerings their sons and their daughters to Molech, which I had not commanded them, and it had not come to my _⌊mind_⌋* to do this detestable thing in order to cause Judah to sin." ³⁶ "So now _⌊therefore_⌋,* thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, concerning this city, of which you are saying, 'It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the plague': ³⁷ Look, I am going to gather them from all the lands to which I driven them in my anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath, and I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell _⌊in safety_⌋.* ³⁸ And they will be for me a people, and I will be for them God. ³⁹ And I will give to them one heart and one way, to revere me _⌊forever_⌋,* for good to them, and to their children after them. ⁴⁰ And I will _⌊make_⌋* with them _⌊an everlasting covenant_⌋* that I will not turn away from them, my doing good to them, and my reverence I will put in their hearts* so that they will not turn aside from me. ⁴¹ And I will rejoice over them to do good to them, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness with all my heart, and with all my inner self."* ⁴² "For thus says Yahweh, 'Just as I have brought to this people all this great disaster, so I will bring upon them all the good that I promise to them. ⁴³ And the fields* will be bought in this land of which you are saying, "It is a desolation, _⌊without humankind or animals_⌋.* It has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans." ⁴⁴ They will buy fields with money, and they will sign the deeds,* and they will seal them,* and they will call witnesses as witness in the land of Benjamin, and in the surroundings of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, and in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negev, for I will restore their fortunes,'* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh."

¹ It happened that in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth of the month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came, he and his army, against Jerusalem. He encamped against it and built siege works against it all around. ² So the city came under siege until the eleventh year of the king.

¹¹ Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.

¹ The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, that was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon,

¹ In the ninth year of Zedekiah, the king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and laid siege to it. ² In the eleventh year of Zedekiah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the city was taken by assault.

⁴ _⌊And then_⌋* in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon came against Jerusalem, he and all his army. And they laid siege to it, and built siege works* against it all around. ⁵ So the city came _⌊under siege_⌋* until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah.

³ where Zedekiah, the king of Judah, had confined him, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Why are you prophesying, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Thus says Yahweh, "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it,

⁸ Then Hanamel, the son of my uncle, came to me, to the courtyard of the guard _⌊according to_⌋* the word of Yahweh, and he said to me, 'Please buy my field that is at Anathoth, that is in the land of Benjamin, for to you is the claim of possession, and to you the redemption; buy it* for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of Yahweh.

¹ And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah a second time while he was still held back in the courtyard of the guard, _⌊saying_⌋,*

⁵ And Jeremiah instructed Baruch, _⌊saying_⌋,* "I am held back, I am not able to enter the temple of Yahweh.

²¹ So King Zedekiah commanded, and they handed Jeremiah over in the courtyard of the guard, and they gave to him a round loaf of bread from the street of the bakers _⌊every day_⌋* until the finishing of all the bread from the city. And Jeremiah stayed in the courtyard of the guard.

⁶ So they took Jeremiah and threw him into the pit* of Malchiah, the son of the king, which was in the courtyard of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down by ropes. Now in the pit* there was no water,* _⌊but only_⌋* mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

¹³ So Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard,* sent word, _⌊along with_⌋* Nebushazban the chief officer, and Nergal-sharezer the high official, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon. ¹⁴ And they sent and took Jeremiah from the courtyard of the guard and gave him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him to the house, so he stayed in the midst of the people. ¹⁵ And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah at his confinement in the courtyard of the guard, _⌊saying_⌋,*

¹² Rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets before you.

⁴ And the king of Egypt said, "Why, Moses and Aaron, do you take* the people from their work? Go to your _⌊forced labor_⌋!"*

³¹ Then he said, "May God do to me and thus may he add, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today!" ³² Now Elisha was sitting in his house and the elders were sitting with him, and the king dispatched a man from before him, but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, "Did you see that this son of a murderer has sent to remove my head? Look, when the messenger comes, close the door; and you must _⌊hold the door closed against him_⌋.* Is not the sound of the feet of his master behind him?"

²² And in the time of his distress, King Ahaz continued to act unfaithfully against Yahweh.

³⁰ "For _⌊in vain_⌋* I have struck your children. They accepted no discipline. Your sword devoured your prophets, like a ravening* lion.

³ O Yahweh, do not your eyes look for honesty? You have struck them, but they felt no pain, you have destroyed them, they refused to take discipline. They have hardened their faces more than rock, they have refused to turn back.

⁴ 'Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: "Look, I am about to turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands,* with which you are fighting against them, the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are laying siege to you from outside the wall, and I will gather them into the center of this city. ⁵ And I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand, and with strong arm, and in _⌊anger_⌋,* and in fury, and in great wrath. ⁶ And I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both humankind and animal; by a great plague they will die. ⁷ And _⌊afterward_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "I will give Zedekiah, the king of Judah, and his servants, and the people, and those who remain in this city from the plague, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their lives, and he will strike them with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. He will not take pity on them, and he will not have compassion, nor will he show compassion." '

⁸ _⌊And then_⌋* as Jeremiah finished speaking all that Yahweh had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You will die! ⁹ Why have you prophesied in the name of Yahweh, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be in ruins, _⌊without_⌋* inhabitant'?" And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the temple of Yahweh.

⁸ "But it will be that the nation or kingdom that will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put his neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, and with the famine, and with the plague," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "until I have destroyed it with my hand.

²⁸ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh: "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. ²⁹ And the Chaldeans, who are fighting against this city, will come and set this city on fire, and they will burn it, and the houses where they have made smoke offerings on their roofs to Baal, and where they have devoted libations to other gods, in order to provoke me to anger.

² "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: 'Go and say to Zedekiah the king of Judah, now you must say to him, "Thus says Yahweh: 'Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire. ³ And you will not escape from his hand, but surely you will be captured, and into his hand you will be given, and _⌊you will see the king of Babylon eye to eye_⌋,* and _⌊you will speak face to face with him_⌋,* and to Babylon you will go.'

⁶ And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah the prophet, _⌊saying_⌋,* ⁷ "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, 'This is what you shall say to the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me, "Look, the army of Pharaoh, which set out to help you, is going to return to his land Egypt. ⁸ And the Chaldeans will return, and they will fight against this city, and they will capture it, and they will burn it with fire." ' ⁹ Thus says Yahweh: 'You must not deceive yourselves, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Surely the Chaldeans will go from us," for they will not go. ¹⁰ For even if you struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and only men pierced through remained among them, each one in his tent, they would rise up and they would burn this city with fire.'"

⁴ Then the officials said to the king, "Please, this man must be killed, _⌊because_⌋* he is making slack the hands of _⌊the soldiers_⌋* who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking to them words like these, for this man is not seeking for welfare* to this people, _⌊but only_⌋* for harm."

⁸ Ebed-melech went out from the house of the king and spoke to the king, _⌊saying_⌋,*

¹³ But do not prophesy again at Bethel, because this is a sanctuary of a king and this is a temple of a kingdom."

² and said, saying to him, "Tell us, by what authority you are doing these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?

¹² And they incited the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came up and* seized him and brought him* to the Sanhedrin.* ¹³ And they put forward false witnesses who said, "This man does not stop speaking words against the holy place* and the law! ¹⁴ For we have heard him saying that this Nazarene Jesus will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses handed down to us."

⁴ Then the city was breached, and all of the men of war entered by night by way of the gate between the wall which was by the garden of the king, and the Chaldeans were against the city all around, so he* left by the way of the Arabah. ⁵ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king, and they overtook him in the Arabah of Jericho, and all of his army scattered from him. ⁶ So they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah, and _⌊they passed sentence on him_⌋.* ⁷ They slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; then they blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon.

¹⁷ Then King Zedekiah sent and fetched him. And the king questioned him in secrecy in his house, and he said, "Is there a word from Yahweh?" And Jeremiah said, "There is." And he said, "You will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon."

¹⁸ But if you do not go surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city will be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you will not escape from their hand.'"

²³ And all your wives and your children will be led out to the Chaldeans, and you will not escape from their hand, but by the hand of the king of Babylon you will be seized, and this city will burn with fire."

⁴ _⌊And then_⌋* _⌊when_⌋* Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them, and all _⌊the soldiers_⌋* with him, they fled and went out at night from the city by the way of the garden of the king through the gate between the walls. And they went out toward the Jordan Valley. ⁵ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And they took him and brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath. And he pronounced _⌊sentence_⌋* on him. ⁶ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah at Riblah before his eyes. The king of Babylon also slaughtered all the nobles of Judah. ⁷ Then he blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and tied him up with bronze fetters to bring him to Babylon.

⁸ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king and they overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho, and all his army was scattered from him. ⁹ Then they captured the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, and _⌊he passed sentence on him_⌋.* ¹⁰ And the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and he also slaughtered all the officials of Judah at Riblah. ¹¹ Then he made blind the eyes of Zedekiah, and they tied him up with bronze fetters, and the king of Babylon brought him to Babylon. And he put him in _⌊prison_⌋* until the day of his death.

¹² And the prince who is in the midst of them, on his shoulder he will carry the baggage in the dusk, and* he will go out; _⌊the wall will be dug through_⌋* to bring him through it; and he will cover his face so that he will* not see the land with his* eye. ¹³ And I will spread out my net on him, and he will be captured in my hunting snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die.

¹³ And he took from the seed of the kingship, and he made with him a covenant, and _⌊he brought him under oath_⌋,* and he took the rulers of the land, ¹⁴ so that they would be a humble kingdom and not lift itself up to keep his covenant _⌊in order for it to stand_⌋.* ¹⁵ But he rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt to give to him horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he escape doing these things, and can he break the covenant and escape? ¹⁶ _⌊As I live_⌋,'* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, '_⌊surely_⌋* in the place of the king _⌊who made_⌋* him king, who despised his oath and who broke his covenant with him—in the midst of Babylon he will die. ¹⁷ And not with a great army and with a great crowd will Pharaoh work* with him in the war, at the pouring out of a siege ramp and the building of siege works to destroy many lives. ¹⁸ And he despised the oath to break covenant. And, look, he gave his hand in pledge, and yet he did all of these things. He will not escape.' ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: '_⌊As I live_⌋,* _⌊surely_⌋* my oath that he despised and my covenant that he broke I will return upon his head. ²⁰ And I will spread my net over him, and he will be caught in my hunting net, and I will bring him to Babylon, and I will enter into judgment with him there about his infidelity that he displayed against me. ²¹ And all of his choice troops, among all of his troops, they will fall by the sword, and those who are remaining,* they will be scattered to all the directions of the wind, and you will know that I, Yahweh, I have spoken.'

²⁵ And as for you, profane one, wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come with the time of the punishment of the end, ²⁶ thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Remove the turban and lift off the crown; things are no longer the same. Exalt the low and bring low the high.

⁴¹ But Moses said, "Why are you going against the command of Yahweh? It will not succeed.

¹² And look, God is with us at the head, and his priests have the trumpets for sounding blasts against you, O sons of Israel. Do not fight against Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,* for you will not succeed."

²⁰ Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people and said to them, "Thus says God: 'Why are you transgressing the commandments of Yahweh so that you will not succeed? For you have forsaken Yahweh, so he will forsake you.'"

³⁰ There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel to oppose Yahweh.

³⁷ Also from there you will come out with your hands on your head, for Yahweh has rejected _⌊those in whom you trust_⌋,* and you will not prosper through them.

⁴ 'Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: "Look, I am about to turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands,* with which you are fighting against them, the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are laying siege to you from outside the wall, and I will gather them into the center of this city. ⁵ And I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand, and with strong arm, and in _⌊anger_⌋,* and in fury, and in great wrath.

²² 'They will be brought to Babylon, and there they will stay until the day of my attending to them,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. 'Then I will bring them up and restore them to this place.'"

⁵ 'They are coming to fight against the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the corpses of the people whom I will strike in my anger and in my wrath, for whom I have hidden my face from this city because of all their wickedness.

⁴ However, hear the word of Yahweh, O Zedekiah, the king of Judah. Thus says Yahweh concerning you: 'You will not die by the sword. ⁵ In peace you will die, and as there was burning for your ancestors,* the former kings who were _⌊before you_⌋,* so they will burn for you, and they will lament for you, "Alas, lord!" For the word I have spoken,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh." '"

¹⁰ For even if you struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and only men pierced through remained among them, each one in his tent, they would rise up and they would burn this city with fire.'"

⁷ Then he blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and tied him up with bronze fetters to bring him to Babylon.

¹³ And I will spread out my net on him, and he will be captured in my hunting snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans, but he will not see it, and there he will die.

⁹ Say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Will it prosper? Will he not tear out its roots, and will he not make its fruit scaly, and it will wither, and all of the freshness of its vegetation will dry up? And to lift it from its roots _⌊will not require great strength or many people_⌋.* ¹⁰ And look! Though it is planted, will it prosper? _⌊When the east wind strikes it_⌋,* will it not dry up completely? On the garden bed of its vegetation it will dry up!" '"

¹⁵ But he rebelled against him by sending his messengers to Egypt to give to him horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Will he escape doing these things, and can he break the covenant and escape?

²³ " 'But* the land must not be sold in* perpetuity, because the land is mine, because you* are aliens and temporary residents with me.

²⁵ " 'When your* brother becomes poor and he sells part of his property, then* _⌊his nearest redeemer_⌋* shall come, and he shall redeem the thing sold by his brother.

³⁴ But* a* field of their cities' pastureland must not be sold, because _⌊it is their property for all time_⌋.*

⁴⁹ or his uncle or his uncle's son may redeem him, or _⌊one of_⌋* _⌊his close relatives_⌋* from his clan may redeem him; or if _⌊he prospers_⌋,* he may redeem himself.

² "Command the _⌊Israelites_⌋* that they give to the Levites from the inheritance of their property cities to live in; and you will give to the Levites pastureland all around the cities.*

¹⁸ Anathoth and its pasturelands, Almon and its pasturelands; four cities. ¹⁹ All the cities of the descendants* of Aaron the priests, thirteen cities and their pasturelands.

³ And he said to the redeemer, "Naomi, who returned from the countryside of Moab, is selling the tract of land which was for our brother Elimelech. ⁴ And I thought _⌊I would tell you_⌋* and say, '_⌊Buy it in the presence of_⌋* those sitting and before the elders of my people,' if you want to redeem it, redeem it. But if you do not want to redeem, tell me so that I may know, for there is no one except you to redeem it, and I am after you." And he said, "I want to redeem it." ⁵ And Boaz said, "On the day of your acquiring the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the wife of the dead man, in order to raise up for the name of the dead his inheritance." ⁶ And the redeemer said, "I am not able to redeem for myself, lest I ruin my inheritance. You redeem for yourself my kinsman-redemption, for I am not able to redeem it." ⁷ (Now this _⌊was the custom in former times_⌋* in Israel concerning the kinsman-redemption and transfer of property: to confirm the matter, a man removed his sandal and gave it to his fellow countryman. This was the manner of attesting in Israel.) ⁸ So the redeemer said to Boaz, "Acquire it for yourself," and he removed his sandal. ⁹ And Boaz said to the elders and all of the people, "You are witnesses today that I have acquired all that was for Elimelech and that was for Kilion and Mahlon from the hand of Naomi.

⁵ Then Yahweh said to Ahijah, "Look, the wife of Jeroboam is coming to seek a word from you about her son, for he is ill. _⌊Thus and so_⌋* you shall say to her. When she comes, she will be disguising herself."

¹ The words of Jeremiah, the son of Hilkiah, among the priests who were in Anathoth, in the land of Benjamin,

²¹ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh concerning the people* of Anathoth who seek your life, _⌊saying_⌋,* "You shall not prophesy in the name of Yahweh _⌊or_⌋* you will die by our hand."

² and said to them, "Go into the village before you, and right away as you* enter into it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.* ³ And if anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' say* 'The Lord has need of it, and will send it here again at once.'" ⁴ And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. ⁵ And some of those who were standing there said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" ⁶ So they told them, just as Jesus had said, and they allowed them to take it.*

¹³ And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, ¹⁴ and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" ' ¹⁵ And he will show you a large upstairs room furnished* and* ready, and prepare for us there." ¹⁶ And the disciples went out and came into the city and found everything* just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

¹⁶ "This time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you must anoint him as leader over my people Israel. He will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen the suffering of my people, because their cry of distress has come to me." ¹⁷ When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh answered him, "Here is the man about whom I told you! This is the one who will govern my people."

³ Then you will go on from there and further you will come to the oak of Tabor. There three men will meet you, who are going up to God at Bethel. One will be carrying three male kid goats, one will be carrying three loaves of bread, and one will be carrying a skin of wine. ⁴ _⌊They will ask how you are doing_⌋* and will give you two loaves, which you will take from their hand. ⁵ After this, you will come to the Gibeah of God,* where there are sentries* of the Philistines. _⌊Just as you enter_⌋* the town there, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place, with harp, tambourine, flute, and zither before them, and they will be prophesying. ⁶ Then the Spirit of Yahweh will rush upon you,* and you will prophesy with them; and you will turn into _⌊a different person_⌋.* ⁷ When these signs come to you, do for yourself what your hand finds to do, for God will be with you.

²⁶ To Abiathar the priest, the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your field, for _⌊you deserve to die_⌋,* but on this day I will not kill you, for you carried the ark of the Lord Yahweh before David my father, and because you endured hardship in all the hardship that my father endured."

²⁵ Then Micaiah said, "Behold, you are about to see on that day when you go _⌊from room to room_⌋* to hide."

⁶⁰ And from the tribe of Benjamin, Geba with its pasturelands, Alemeth with its pasturelands, and Anathoth with its pasturelands. All their cities were thirteen cities throughout their clans.

² Now at that time the army of the king of Babylon was laying siege to Jerusalem and Jeremiah the prophet was confined in the courtyard of the guard that was in the palace of the king of Judah,

⁷ 'Look, Hanamel, the son of Shallum, your uncle, is going to come to you, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Buy for yourself my field that is at Anathoth, for _⌊you have_⌋* the right of redemption to buy it." '*

¹¹ And it was broken on that day. Then the afflicted* of the flock,* the ones who were watching me, knew that it was the word of Yahweh.

⁵³ So the father knew that it was that* same hour at which Jesus said to him, "Your son will live," and he himself believed, and his whole household.

¹⁷ Now while Peter was greatly perplexed within himself as to what the vision that he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having found the house of Simon by asking around, stood at the gate. ¹⁸ And they called out and* asked if Simon who was also called Peter was staying there as a guest. ¹⁹ And while* Peter was reflecting about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, men* are looking for you. ²⁰ But get up, go down, and go with them—not hesitating at all, because I have sent them." ²¹ So Peter went down to the men and* said, "Behold, I am he whom you are looking for! What is the reason for which you have come?" ²² And they said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man—and well spoken of by the whole nation of the Jews—was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear words from you." ²³ So he invited them in and* entertained them as guests, and on the next day he got up and* went away with them. And some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. ²⁴ And on the next day he entered into Caesarea. ²⁵ So it happened that when Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at his* feet, and* worshiped him.* ²⁶ But Peter helped him up, saying, "Get up! I myself am also a man!" ²⁷ And as he* conversed with him, he went in and found many people gathered. ²⁸ And he said to them, "You know that it is forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or to approach a foreigner. And to me God has shown that I should call no man common or unclean.

¹⁵ "My lord, hear me. A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead." ¹⁶ Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named* in the hearing of the Hittites:* four hundred shekels of silver _⌊at the merchants' current rate_⌋.*

²⁸ Then Midianite traders passed by. And they* drew Joseph up and brought him up from the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph to Egypt.

³⁹ As the king was passing by, he called to the king and said, "Your servant went out in the thick of the battle, and suddenly a man turned and brought a man to me and said, 'Guard this man. If by any means he should be missed, it will be your life in his place, or you shall pay a talent of silver.'

⁹ If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will pay* ten thousand talents* of silver to those who do the job, to bring to the treasury of the king."

² Why do you weigh out money for what is not food, and your labor for _⌊what cannot satisfy_⌋?* Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and let your soul take pleasure in _⌊rich_⌋* food.

² So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a homer of barely and a measure of wine.*

¹² And I said to them, "If _⌊it seems right to you_⌋,* give me my wages, but if not, _⌊keep them_⌋."* And they weighed out my wages, thirty silver shekels. ¹³ And Yahweh said to me, "Throw it to the potter,"* _⌊this noble price_⌋* at which I was valued by them!" So I took the thirty silver shekels and I threw them to the potter* in the house of Yahweh.

³⁴ 'Is not this stored up with me, sealed in my treasuries?'*

⁹ And the men went and passed through the land, and they _⌊described_⌋* the cities in seven divisions in a book; and they came to Joshua to the camp at Shiloh,

⁹ And Boaz said to the elders and all of the people, "You are witnesses today that I have acquired all that was for Elimelech and that was for Kilion and Mahlon from the hand of Naomi. ¹⁰ And also Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, I have acquired as a wife, to raise up the name of the dead over his inheritance, so that the name of the dead may not be cut off from his relatives and from the gate of his birth place. You are witnesses today." ¹¹ And all of the people who were at the gate and the elders said, "We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman coming into your house as Rachel and as Leah, who _⌊together_⌋* built the house of Israel. May you have strength in Ephrathah and bestow a name in Bethlehem.

¹⁷ My transgression would be sealed in a bag, and you would cover over my guilt.

⁶ Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death; passion is fierce as Sheol; its flashes are flashes of fire; it is a blazing flame.

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Take yourself a large tablet and write on it with a common stylus pen: Maher-Halal-Hash-Baz. ² And I will require reliable witnesses as a witness for me: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah."

⁸ Now go, write it on a tablet with them, and inscribe it on a scroll, _⌊that_⌋* it may be _⌊for the time to come_⌋,* forever, forever.

⁵ This one will say, 'I belong to Yahweh!' And that one will be called by the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand 'Yahweh's' and _⌊take the name_⌋* of Israel."

¹² And I gave the deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, _⌊in the presence of_⌋* Hanamel, the son of my uncle, and _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the witnesses who signed the deed of the purchase, _⌊in the presence of_⌋* the Judeans* who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard.

²⁵ Yet you have said to me, Lord Yahweh, "Buy for yourself the field with the money, and call witnesses as witness," though the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.'"

⁴⁴ They will buy fields with money, and they will sign the deeds,* and they will seal them,* and they will call witnesses as witness in the land of Benjamin, and in the surroundings of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, and in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negev, for I will restore their fortunes,'* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh."

²⁶ And the vision of the evening and the morning that has been _⌊described_⌋,* it is true; and you, seal up the vision, for _⌊it refers to many days to come_⌋."*

³³ The one who accepts his testimony has attested that God is true.

²⁷ Do not work for the food that perishes, but the food that remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has set his seal on this one."

²² who also sealed us and gave the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts.

¹³ in whom also you, when you heard* the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also when you believed you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

³⁰ and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

² And I saw another angel ascending _⌊from the east_⌋*, holding the seal of the living God, and he cried out with a loud voice to the four angels _⌊who were given permission_⌋* to damage the earth and the sea,

⁴ And it was told to them that they should not damage the grass of the earth or any green plant or any tree, except those people who do not have the seal of God on their* foreheads.

²⁷ And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus so that they could do for him according to what was customary under the law,

³ because* you are especially acquainted with both all the customs and controversial questions with respect to the Jews. Therefore I beg you* to listen to me with patience.

¹⁶ But if anyone is disposed to be contentious, we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God.

¹⁶ And I prayed to Yahweh—after giving my deed of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah—_⌊saying_⌋,*

⁴ Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of Yahweh that he had spoken to him on _⌊a scroll_⌋.* ⁵ And Jeremiah instructed Baruch, _⌊saying_⌋,* "I am held back, I am not able to enter the temple of Yahweh.

¹⁶ _⌊And then_⌋,* the moment of their hearing all the words, _⌊they turned to one another in alarm_⌋* and they said to Baruch, "We must certainly report all these words to the king!" ¹⁷ Then they asked Baruch, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Tell us please, how did you write all these words, from his mouth?" ¹⁸ And Baruch said to them, "From his mouth. He dictated to me all these words and I was writing on the scroll with the ink." ¹⁹ Then the officials said to Baruch, "Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and let not a man know where you are."

²⁶ And the king commanded Jerahmeel, the son of the king, and Seraiah, the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, the son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet, but Yahweh hid them.

³² Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neriah, the secretary, and he wrote on it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim, the king of Judah, had burned in the fire, and furthermore was added to them many words like these.

³ But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to kill us and to deport us to Babylon." ⁴ So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies, and all the people did not listen* to the voice of Yahweh to stay in the land of Judah. ⁵ But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took* all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered to dwell as aliens in the land of Judah— ⁶ the men, and the women, and the little children, and the daughters of the king, and _⌊everyone_⌋* whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the _⌊guard_⌋* had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah—

¹ The word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke to Baruch, the son of Neriah, at his writing these words on a scroll from the mouth of Jeremiah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, the king of Judah, _⌊saying_⌋,* ² "Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch: ³ 'You said, "Woe please to me, for Yahweh has added sorrow to my pain. I am weary in my groaning and I do not find rest." ' ⁴ Thus you will say to him: 'Thus says Yahweh, "Look, what I have built I am about to tear down, and what I have planted I am about to pluck up, it is all the land. ⁵ And you, do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek great things,* for look, I am about to bring disaster upon all flesh," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "but to you I will give your life as booty in all the places where you may go." '"

⁵⁹ The word that Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, at his going with Zedekiah, the king of Judah, to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was the _⌊quartermaster_⌋.*

²¹ For we are taking into consideration what is honorable not only before the Lord, but also before people.

¹⁸ Thus says Yahweh:
'Look, I will restore the fortunes* of the tents of Jacob, and I will have compassion on his dwellings, and the city will be rebuilt upon its mound, and the citadel fortress will stand on its rightful site.

⁵ You will again plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria. The planters will plant, and they will enjoy it.*

¹² And they will come, and they will sing for joy on the height of Zion, and they will be radiant over the goodness of Yahweh, over the grain, and over the wine, and over the olive oil, and over the young ones of the flock, and over the cattle. And their life will become like a well-watered garden, and they will never languish again."

²⁴ And Judah and all of its towns together will live in it, farmers and those who travel with the flocks.*

³⁷ Look, I am going to gather them from all the lands to which I driven them in my anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath, and I will bring them back to this place, and I will cause them to dwell _⌊in safety_⌋.*

⁴³ And the fields* will be bought in this land of which you are saying, "It is a desolation, _⌊without humankind or animals_⌋.* It has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans." ⁴⁴ They will buy fields with money, and they will sign the deeds,* and they will seal them,* and they will call witnesses as witness in the land of Benjamin, and in the surroundings of Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, and in the cities of the hill country, and in the cities of the Shephelah, and in the cities of the Negev, for I will restore their fortunes,'* _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh."

¹² Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'Again there will be in this waste place, _⌊without_⌋* people and animals,* and in all its towns, pasture for shepherds allowing their flock to lie down. ¹³ In the towns of the hill country, in the towns of the Shephelah, and in the towns of the Negev, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the surroundings of Jerusalem, and in the towns of Judah, flocks will again pass under the hands of the counter,' says Yahweh.

¹⁴ And I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they will rebuild the desolated cities and will inhabit them. And they will plant vineyards and will drink their wine, and they will make gardens and will eat their fruit. ¹⁵ And I will plant them on their land and they will not be uprooted again from their land that I have given to them," says Yahweh your God.

¹⁰ On that day,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts, 'you will invite _⌊one another_⌋* under the vine and under the fig tree.'"

⁹ Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your family, and I will deal well with you.' ¹⁰ _⌊I am not worthy_⌋* of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown* your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. ¹¹ Please rescue me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and attack mother and children alike. ¹² Now you yourself said, 'I will surely deal well with you and make your offspring as the sand of the sea that cannot be counted for abundance.'"

¹⁸ Then King David went and sat before Yahweh and said, "Who am I, my lord Yahweh, and what is my house that you have brought me up to _⌊this place_⌋?* ¹⁹ Still, this was _⌊insignificant_⌋* in your eyes, my lord Yahweh, and also you have spoken about the house of your servant from afar, and this may be the teaching of humans, my lord Yahweh. ²⁰ _⌊What more can David say to you_⌋?* You know your servant, my lord Yahweh. ²¹ Because of your word and according to your heart, you have done all of this great thing, in order to let your servant know. ²² Therefore you are great, my lord Yahweh, for there is no one like you, and there is no god except you, in all that we have heard with our ears. ²³ Who is like your people, like Israel? Israel is the one nation on earth whose God _⌊led them_⌋,* in order to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to do for you* the great and awesome things for your land in the presence of your people whom he redeemed for himself from Egypt, from the nations and their gods. ²⁴ You have established your people Israel for yourself as a people forever, and you, O Yahweh, have become their God. ²⁵ So then, Yahweh God, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it forever, and do just as you have promised.

¹ You will be in the right, O Yahweh, when I complain to you. Even so, let me speak my claims with you. Why does the way of the wicked succeed? All those who deal treacherously with treachery are at ease.

³⁵ And they will say, "_⌊This desolate land_⌋* has become like the garden of Eden, and the wasted and desolate and destroyed cities, now being refortified, are inhabited." ³⁶ And the nations who are left all around, you will know that I, Yahweh, I built _⌊that which was destroyed_⌋;* I planted the desolate land; I, Yahweh, I have spoken, and I will act.' ³⁷ "Thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Again this time I will let _⌊myself be inquired of_⌋* by the house of Israel, to do something for them; I will cause them to increase _⌊their population like a flock_⌋.*

⁶ Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷ And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds* in Christ Jesus.

¹ In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth— ² Now* the earth was formless and empty, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. ³ And God said, "Let there be light!" And there was light. ⁴ And God saw the light, that it was good, and God caused there to be a separation between the light and between the darkness. ⁵ And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. ⁶ And God said, "Let there be a vaulted dome* in the midst of the waters, and _⌊let it cause a separation between the waters_⌋."* ⁷ So* God made the vaulted dome,* and he caused a separation between the waters which were under the vaulted dome* and between the waters which were over the vaulted dome.* And it was so. ⁸ And God called the vaulted dome* "heaven."* And there was evening, and there was morning, a second day. ⁹ And God said, "Let the waters under heaven* be gathered to one place, and let the dry ground appear." And it was so. ¹⁰ And God called the dry ground "earth," and he called the collection of the waters "seas." And God saw that it was good. ¹¹ And God said, "Let the earth produce green plants that will bear seed—fruit trees bearing fruit _⌊in which there is seed_⌋*—according to its* kind, on the earth." And it was so. ¹² And the earth brought forth green plants bearing seed according to its* kind, and trees bearing fruit _⌊in which there was seed_⌋* according to its* kind. And God saw that it was good. ¹³ And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. ¹⁴ And God said, "Let there be lights* in the vaulted dome* of heaven* _⌊to separate day from night_⌋,* and let them be as signs and for appointed times, and for days and years, ¹⁵ and they shall be as lights* in the vaulted dome* of heaven* to give light on the earth." And it was so. ¹⁶ And God made two lights,* the greater light* to rule* the day and the smaller light* to rule* the night, and the stars. ¹⁷ And God placed them in the vaulted dome* of heaven* to give light on the earth ¹⁸ and to rule over the day and over the night, and to _⌊separate light from darkness_⌋.* And God saw that it was good. ¹⁹ And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. ²⁰ And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly over the earth across the face of the vaulted dome* of heaven.* ²¹ So* God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kind, and every bird with wings according to its* kind. And God saw that it was good. ²² And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth." ²³ And there was evening, and there was morning, a fifth day. ²⁴ And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kind: cattle and moving things, and wild animals* according to their kind." And it was so. ²⁵ So* God made wild animals* according to their kind and the cattle according to their kind, and every creeping thing of the earth according to its* kind. And God saw that it was good. ²⁶ And God said, "Let us make humankind in* our image and according to* our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of heaven,* and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every moving thing that moves upon the earth." ²⁷ So* God created humankind in* his image, in* the likeness of God he created him,* male and female he created them. ²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of heaven,* and over every animal that moves upon the earth." ²⁹ And God said, "Look—I am giving to you every plant that bears seed which is on the face of the whole earth, and every kind of tree _⌊that bears fruit_⌋.* They shall be yours as food." ³⁰ And to every kind of animal of the earth and to every bird of heaven,* and to everything that moves upon the earth in which there is life I am giving every green plant as food." And it was so. ³¹ And God saw everything that he had made and, behold, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning, a sixth day.

¹⁴ Is anything too difficult for Yahweh? At the appointed time I will return to you _⌊in the spring_⌋* and Sarah shall have a son."

¹¹ because in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and on the seventh day he rested. Therefore Yahweh blessed the seventh day and consecrated it.

¹⁵ Then Hezekiah prayed before the face of Yahweh and said, "O Yahweh, God of Israel who lives above the cherubim. You are God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the world; you have made the heavens and the earth.

⁶ "You alone are Yahweh. You alone have made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, and all of their army, the earth and all that is in it, the waters and all that is in them. You give life to all of them, and the army of the heavens worship you.

² "I know that you can do all things, and any scheme from you will not be thwarted.

²⁵ Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

⁵ To him who made the heavens with skill,* for his loyal love endures forever. ⁶ To him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his loyal love endures forever. ⁷ To him who made the great lights, for his loyal love endures forever. ⁸ The sun to rule the day, for his loyal love endures forever. ⁹ The moon and stars to rule the night, for his loyal love endures forever.

⁵ Blessed is the one whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is on Yahweh as his God, ⁶ who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, the one who keeps faith* forever,

²⁶ Lift your eyes up on high, and see! Who created these? The one who brings out their host by number. He calls all them by name. Because he is great of power and mighty of power, no man is missing. ²⁷ _⌊Why_⌋* do you say, Jacob, and you speak, Israel, "My way is hidden from Yahweh, and my judgment is passed over by my God?" ²⁸ Have you not known, or have you not heard? Yahweh is the God of eternity, the creator of the ends of the earth! He is not faint, and he does not grow weary! There is no searching his understanding.

⁵ Thus says the God, Yahweh, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it.

²⁴ Thus says Yahweh, your redeemer, and he who formed you in* the womb: "I am Yahweh, who made everything, who stretched out the heavens alone, who spread out the earth—who was with me?—

¹² I myself made the earth, and I created humankind upon it. I, my hands, stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.

⁹ Remember the former things from _⌊a long time ago_⌋,* for I am God and there is none besides me, God and there is none like me, ¹⁰ who from the beginning declares the end, and from before, things that have not been done, who says, 'My plan shall stand,' and, 'I will accomplish* all my wishes,'*

¹² "Listen to me, Jacob, and Israel, _⌊whom I called_⌋:* I am he. I am the first; also I am the last. ¹³ Indeed, my hand founded the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon* them, they stand in position together.

⁶ Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Look, I do not know how to speak, for I am a youth."*

¹⁰ Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh, surely you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, 'It will be peace for you,' while the sword reaches up to the throat."

¹¹ "_⌊Thus_⌋* you shall say to them,
'Gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under these heavens. ¹² He is the maker of the earth by his power, who created the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding he stretched out heaven.

¹³ Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh, look, the prophets are saying to them, 'You will not see the sword, and famine will not be yours, but reliable peace I will give to you in this place.'"

⁵ "I have made the earth with humankind and animals* that are on the face of the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and I give it to whomever is right in my eyes.

²⁷ "Look, I am Yahweh, the God of all flesh; is _⌊anything_⌋* too difficult for me?"

¹⁵ He is the one who made the earth by his power, the one who created the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding he stretched out the heavens.

¹⁹ The portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the creator of _⌊everything_⌋,* and the tribe of his inheritance. Yahweh of hosts is his name.

⁸ _⌊And then_⌋* _⌊as they were striking_⌋,* and I was left behind, I fell on my face, and I cried out, and I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! "Will you be destroying all of the remnant of Israel _⌊while you pour out your rage_⌋* on Jerusalem?"

¹³ And it happened that _⌊as I was prophesying_⌋,* Pelatiahu the son of Benaiahu died! And I fell on my face, and I cried with a loud voice, and I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh, you are making a complete destruction of the remnant of Israel!"

²² He reveals the deep and the hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

¹ An oracle. The word of Yahweh concerning Israel. "_⌊Thus declares_⌋* Yahweh, who stretches out the heavens, founds the earth, and forms the spirit of humankind in its midst:*

²⁶ But Jesus looked at them* and* said to them, "With human beings this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

³⁷ For _⌊nothing will be impossible with God_⌋."*

²⁷ But he said, "What is impossible with men is possible with God."

¹ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ² This one was in the beginning with God. ³ All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that* has come into being.

⁴⁹ 'Heaven is my throne and earth is the footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? ⁵⁰ Did not my hand make all these things?'*

¹⁵ and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, proclaiming the good news that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all the things that are in them—

¹⁸ known from of old.'*

²⁴ the God who made the world and all the things in it. This one, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by human hands,

⁹ and to enlighten everyone as to what is the administration of the mystery hidden from the ages by God, who created all things, ¹⁰ in order that the many-sided wisdom of God might be made known now to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places through the church, ¹¹ according to the purpose of the ages which he carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,

¹⁵ who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all* creation, ¹⁶ because all things in the heavens and on the earth were created by him, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers, all things were created through him and for him,

² in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world,* ³ who is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, sustaining all things by the word of power.* When he* had made purification for sins through him, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

¹⁰ And,
"You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the works of your hands; ¹¹ they will perish, but you continue, and they will all become old like a garment, ¹² and like a robe you will roll them up, and like a garment they will be changed; but you are the same, and your years will not run out."*

¹¹ "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, because you have created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created."

²⁴ But his bow remained in a steady position; _⌊his arms_⌋* were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob. From there is the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel.

⁵ You will not bow down to them, and you will not serve them, because I am Yahweh your God, a jealous God, punishing the guilt of the parents on the children on the third and on the fourth generations* of those hating me, ⁶ and showing loyal love to thousands of generations* of those loving me and of those keeping my commandments.

⁷ keeping loyal love to the thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and he does not leave utterly unpunished, punishing the guilt of fathers on sons and on sons of sons on third and fourth generations."

¹⁸ 'Yahweh is _⌊slow to anger_⌋* and great of loyal love, _⌊forgiving_⌋* sin and rebellion; but surely he leaves nothing unpunished, visiting the sin of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generations.'

⁹ 'You shall not bow down to them, and you shall not serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, punishing the guilt of fathers upon their children and upon the third and upon the fourth generation of those hating me, ¹⁰ but showing loyal love to thousands of those who love me and of those who keep my commandments.

⁹ So know that Yahweh your God, he is God, the trustworthy God, maintaining his* covenant and his* loyal love with those who love him and with those who keep his commandments to a thousand generations,* ¹⁰ but repaying those* who hate him _⌊in their own person_⌋* to destroy them;* he is not slow with those who hate him _⌊in their own person_⌋;* he repays them.*

²¹ You must not be in dread from the presence of them, because Yahweh your God, who is in your midst, is a great and awesome God.

¹⁷ For Yahweh your God, he is God of the gods and Lord of the lords, the great and mighty God, the awesome one who _⌊is not partial_⌋,* and he does not take bribes.

²⁴ Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his cattle and donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and everything that was his, and they brought them to the valley of Achor.* ²⁵ And Joshua said, "Why did you bring us trouble? Yahweh will bring you trouble on this day." And all Israel stoned them* with stones;* and they burned them with fire after they stoned them with stones. ²⁶ Then _⌊they placed_⌋* on top of him a great pile of stones that remains to this day. And Yahweh _⌊turned from his burning anger_⌋,* and thus the name of that place to this day is called the valley of Achor.*

¹ There was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year. And David _⌊inquired of Yahweh_⌋,* and Yahweh said, "The bloodguilt is on Saul and on his household, because he killed the Gibeonites." ² So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not from the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* they were from the remainder of the Amorites. Now the _⌊Israelites_⌋* had sworn to them,* but Saul tried to wipe them out in his zeal for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and Judah. ³ So David asked the Gibeonites, "What can I do for you, and with what can I make amends that you may bless the inheritance of Yahweh?" ⁴ Then the Gibeonites said to him, "_⌊It is not a matter for us of_⌋* silver or gold with Saul or with his household. It is not for us to put to death anyone in Israel." He asked, "What are you saying that I should do for you all?" ⁵ Then they said to the king, "The man who consumed us and who plotted against us so that we were destroyed from existing in all of the territory of Israel, ⁶ let seven men from his sons be given over to us, and we will execute them before Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen one of Yahweh." Then the king said, "I will give them over." ⁷ But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the sworn oath of Yahweh which was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. ⁸ So the king took two of the sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bore to Saul, namely Armoni and Mephibosheth, and five of the sons of Michal the daughter of Saul whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite. ⁹ He gave them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they executed them on the mountain in the presence of Yahweh, and the seven fell together. Now they were put to death in the days of the harvest, at the beginning of the harvest of barley.

⁹ But you did more evil than all who were before you. You have gone and made for yourself other gods and molten idols to provoke me, but me you have _⌊completely disregarded_⌋.* ¹⁰ Therefore, look, I am about to bring disaster upon the house of Jeroboam, and I will cut off _⌊males_⌋* from Jeroboam, bond or free, in Israel. I will burn after the house of Jeroboam as one burns after the manure, until it is finished.

¹ The word of Yahweh came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying, ² "Because I exalted you from the dust and I made you a leader over my people Israel, but you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and you caused my people Israel to sin, to provoke me with their sins, ³ I am now about to consume Baasha and his house. I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

²¹ 'Look, I am bringing disaster on you, and I will sweep away after you. I will cut off for Ahab _⌊every male_⌋* in Israel, bond or free. ²² I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, _⌊because you made me angry_⌋* and have caused Israel to sin.' ²³ Moreover, concerning Jezebel, Yahweh has said, 'The dogs will eat Jezebel in the outer rampart of Jezreel.' ²⁴ The one who dies for Ahab in the city, the dogs will eat; the one who dies in the open country, the birds of heaven will eat."

²⁶ '"Since I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his children yesterday," declares Yahweh, "I will requite it for you in this tract of land," declares Yahweh.' So then lift him out and throw him on the tract of land according to the word of Yahweh."

⁵ I said, "O Yahweh God of the heavens, the great and awesome one who keeps the covenant and loyal love for the ones who love him and for those who keep his commands.

¹ A psalm of Asaph.*
The Supreme God, God, Yahweh, has spoken and summoned the earth, from the rising of the sun to its setting.

³ Great is Yahweh, and very worthy of praise, and his greatness is unsearchable. ⁴ One generation will laud your works to another, and will declare your mighty deeds. ⁵ On the splendor of the glory of your majesty, and on your wonderful deeds, I will meditate. ⁶ And they will speak of the power of your awesome deeds,* and I will tell of your greatness.*

⁶ For a child has been born for us; a son has been given to us. And the dominion will be on his shoulder, and his name is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

²¹ A remnant will return— the remnant of Jacob—to the mighty God.

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty one who resides forever, and whose name is holy:
"I reside in a high and holy place, and with the _⌊contrite_⌋* and humble of spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the _⌊contrite_⌋.*

³⁵ Thus says Yahweh, who gives the sun for light by day, the regulations of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea and its waves roar—Yahweh of hosts is his name.

¹² Are you not from of old, O Yahweh my God, my Holy One? You* shall not die. O Yahweh, you have marked them* for judgment; O Rock, you have established them* for reproof.

³² And you—fill up the measure of your fathers! ³³ Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How will you escape from the condemnation to hell? ³⁴ For this reason, behold, I am sending to you prophets and wise men and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues and will pursue from town to town, ³⁵ so that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel up to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation!

²⁵ And all the people answered and* said, "His blood be on us and on our children!"

¹¹ Who is like you among the gods, Yahweh? Who is like you—glorious in holiness, awesome in praiseworthy actions, doing wonders?*

³² then you shall hear in heaven and you shall act and you shall judge your servant, to declare the wicked guilty by bringing his way upon his head and _⌊to declare the righteous innocent_⌋* by rewarding him according to his righteousness.

⁹ For the eyes of Yahweh roam throughout all the earth to strengthen those whose heart is fully devoted to him. You have been foolish in this, for from now on you will have wars."

²¹ "Indeed, his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.

¹³ From heaven Yahweh looks; he sees all the children of humankind. ¹⁴ From his dwelling place* he gazes on all the inhabitants of the earth, ¹⁵ he who fashions altogether their heart, he who understands all their works.

¹⁵ The eyes of Yahweh are toward the righteous, and his ears toward their cry for help.

¹² And to you belongs loyal love, O Lord, because you will render to each according to his work.

²¹ For before the eyes of Yahweh are _⌊human ways_⌋,* and all his paths he examines.

¹⁴ For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil.

²⁹ This also comes forth from Yahweh of hosts.
He is wonderful in advice; he makes great wisdom.

¹³ Who has measured up the spirit of Yahweh or informed him as _⌊his counselor_⌋*?

¹⁰ who from the beginning declares the end, and from before, things that have not been done, who says, 'My plan shall stand,' and, 'I will accomplish* all my wishes,'* ¹¹ who calls a bird of prey from the east, the man of his* plan from a country from afar. Indeed I have spoken; indeed I will bring it to being. I have formed it; indeed I will do it.

¹⁷ For my eyes are on all their ways, they are not hidden _⌊from before me_⌋,* and their iniquity is not concealed from before my eyes.

¹⁰ I, Yahweh, examine the _⌊mind_⌋,* I test the _⌊heart_⌋,* and give to each one according to his way, according to the fruit of his deeds.

²⁴ Or can a person hide himself in secret places and I cannot see him?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "Do I not fill up the heaven and the earth?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

³⁵ And all the dwellers of the earth are regarded as nothing, and he does _⌊according to_⌋* his desire in the host of heaven and among the dwellers of earth, and there is not one who can hold back his hand, or _⌊ask him_⌋,* 'What are you doing?'

²⁷ For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and at that time he will reward each one according to _⌊what he has done_⌋.*

²⁹ and they will come out—those who have done good things to a resurrection of life, but those who have practiced evil things to a resurrection of judgment.

⁶ who will reward each one according to his works: ⁷ to those who, by perseverance in good work, seek glory and honor and immortality, eternal life, ⁸ but to those who act from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be affliction and distress for every _⌊human being_⌋* who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek, ¹⁰ but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and to the Greek.

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how incomprehensible are his ways! ³⁴ "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?*

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, in order that each one may receive back the things through the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

¹¹ in whom also we were chosen, having been predestined according to the purpose of the One who works all things according to the counsel of his will,

¹³ And no creature is hidden in the sight of him, but all things are naked and laid bare to the eyes of him to whom _⌊we must give our account_⌋*.

²³ And I will kill her children with deadly disease, and all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts, and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

¹² "Behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward is with me, to repay each one according to what his deeds are!

³ And I myself will harden the heart of Pharaoh, and I will make my signs and my wonders numerous in the land of Egypt.

¹⁶ But for the sake of this I have caused you to stand—for the sake of showing you my strength and in order to proclaim my name in all the earth.

² so that you will tell in the ears of your child and _⌊your grandchild_⌋* that I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and so that you will tell about my signs that I have done among them, and so you will know that I am Yahweh."

³⁴ Or has a god ever attempted to go to take for himself* a nation from the midst of a nation, using trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

²² And Yahweh gave great and awesome signs and wonders in Egypt against Pharaoh and against his entire household _⌊in our presence_⌋.*

¹⁹ the great trials that your eyes saw and the signs and the wonders and the workings of the strong hand and the outstretched arm by which Yahweh your God brought you out; so Yahweh your God will do to all of the peoples _⌊because of whom_⌋* you are in fear _⌊before them_⌋.*

²³ Who is like your people, like Israel? Israel is the one nation on earth whose God _⌊led them_⌋,* in order to redeem a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to do for you* the great and awesome things for your land in the presence of your people whom he redeemed for himself from Egypt, from the nations and their gods.

²¹ And who is like your people Israel, the one nation upon earth whom God went to redeem for himself, to establish for you a reputation* for great and awesome things, to drive out nations from before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt?

¹⁰ You gave signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all of his servants, and all of the people of his land because you knew that they acted arrogantly against them. You made a name for yourself, as it is this day.

⁴³ how he performed* his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the region of Zoan, ⁴⁴ when he turned their rivers* to blood so they could not drink from their streams. ⁴⁵ He sent among them flies that devoured them and frogs that destroyed them. ⁴⁶ And he gave their crop to the locusts and their labor to the locust.* ⁴⁷ He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamore trees with sleet.* ⁴⁸ He also handed their cattle over to the hail and their livestock to the lightning bolts. ⁴⁹ He sent against them his fierce anger, rage and indignation and trouble, a band of _⌊destroying_⌋* angels. ⁵⁰ He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them* from death but handed their life over to the plague. ⁵¹ And he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the first of their virility in the tents of Ham.

²⁷ They set before them the words concerning his signs and portents in the land of Ham. ²⁸ He sent darkness and made it dark, and they did not rebel against his words. ²⁹ He turned their waters into blood and it killed their fish. ³⁰ Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings. ³¹ He spoke, and there came flies and gnats throughout all their territory.* ³² He gave hail for their rains and the fire of lightning in their land. ³³ And he struck their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their territory. ³⁴ He spoke and there came locusts and young locusts without number. ³⁵ And they ate up all the vegetation in their land, and they ate up the fruit of their ground. ³⁶ And he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the first of all their virility.

⁹ He sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants.

¹² _⌊who made_⌋* his magnificent arm move _⌊at_⌋* the right hand of Moses, _⌊who divided_⌋* the waters _⌊before them_⌋,* to make an everlasting name for himself,

¹⁵ "And now, Lord our God, who have brought your people out from the land of Egypt with a strong hand, and you have made for yourself a name until this day—we have sinned, we have acted wickedly.

³⁶ This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years.

¹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, because with a strong hand he will release them, and with a strong hand he will drive them out from his land."

⁶ Therefore say to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* 'I am Yahweh, and I will bring you out from under the _⌊forced labor_⌋* of Egypt, and I will deliver you from their slavery, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great punishments.

⁹ And it will be as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes so that the law of Yahweh will be in your mouth, that with a strong hand Yahweh brought you out from Egypt.

¹⁴ And when your son asks you _⌊in the future_⌋,* saying, 'What is this?' you will say to him, 'With strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt, from a house of slaves.

⁸ And Yahweh brought us out from Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with great terror and with signs and with wonders.

⁴² (for they shall hear of your great name and your powerful hand and your outstretched arm), and he shall come and pray toward this house,

⁸ O Yahweh God of hosts, who is mighty like you, O Yah, with* your faithfulness surrounding you? ⁹ You are ruling the surging of the sea. When its waves rise, _⌊you yourself still_⌋* them. ¹⁰ _⌊You yourself crushed_⌋* Rahab like one who is slain; you scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

³⁷ Then he brought them out with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.

⁴³ And so he brought out his people with joy, his chosen ones with rejoicing.

⁸ Yet he saved them for the sake of his name, to make known his might. ⁹ So he rebuked _⌊the Red Sea_⌋,* and it dried up, and he led them through the deep as through a desert. ¹⁰ Thus he saved them from the hand of the hater and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. ¹¹ But waters covered their adversaries; not one of them survived.

¹¹ And he brought Israel out from among them, for his loyal love endures forever. ¹² With a strong hand and an outstretched arm, for his loyal love endures forever.

¹⁵ for all the land which you see I will give to you, and to your descendants, forever.

¹⁸ On that day Yahweh _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with Abram saying, "To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates river, ¹⁹ the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, ²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, ²¹ the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you. ⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God."

⁷ Yahweh, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'to your offspring I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

¹³ And behold, Yahweh was standing beside him,* and he said, "I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The ground on which you were sleeping I will give to you and to your descendants. ¹⁴ Your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west, and to the east, and to the north and to the south. And all the families of the earth will be blessed through you and through your descendants. ¹⁵ Now behold, I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go. And I will bring you to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised to you."

¹¹ And God said to him, "I am El-Shaddai.* Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and an assemblage of nations shall be from you, and kings shall go out from your loins. ¹² And as for the land that I gave to Abraham and to Isaac, I will give it to you. And to your descendants after you I will give the land.

²⁴ And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will certainly visit you and bring you up from this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."

⁸ And I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from this land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites.*

¹⁷ And I said, "I will bring you up from the misery of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites,* to a land flowing with milk and honey." '

⁵ And when Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites*—which he swore to your ancestors* to give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you will perform this service in this month.

¹ And Yahweh spoke to Moses, "Go, go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, 'I will give it to your offspring.' ² And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites,* the Amorites,* and the Hittites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,* ³ Go to a land flowing with milk and honey, but I will not go up among you, because you are a stiff-necked people, lest I destroy you on the way."

¹⁶ 'Yahweh was unable to bring this people in the land that he swore by an oath, and he slaughtered them in the desert.'

³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

⁸ Look, I have set the land _⌊before you_⌋;* go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it to them and to their offspring after them.'

³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,*

¹⁰ "And then it will happen that when Yahweh your God will bring you to the land that he swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to you large and fine cities that you did not build,

¹⁸ And you shall do what is right and good in the eyes of Yahweh, so that _⌊it shall go well_⌋* for you and so that you may go and you may take possession of the good land that Yahweh swore for your ancestors,*

²³ But he brought us out from there in order to bring us here to give us the land that he swore to our ancestors.*

¹³ And he will love you, and he will bless you, and he will multiply you, and he will bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your soil, your grain, your wine, and your olive oil, and newborn calves of your cattle, and the newborn lambs* of your flocks in the land that he swore to your ancestors* to give you.

¹ "All of the commandments* that I am commanding you today you must diligently observe, so that you may live and multiply, and you may go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors.*

⁹ And he brought us to this place and gave to us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. ¹⁰ And now, look, I am bringing* the firstfruit of the fruit of the ground that you gave to me, Yahweh,' and you shall place it _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God, and you shall bow down _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God. ¹¹ And you shall celebrate with all of the bounty that Yahweh your God gave to you and to your family, you and the Levite and the alien who is in your midst.

⁶ Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors* to give them.

⁴³ And Yahweh gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their ancestors,* and they took possession of it and _⌊settled in it_⌋.*

¹⁵ You gave them bread from heaven for their starvation, and you caused water to go out from a rock for their thirst. You told them to go in order to take into possession the land that you have sworn by your hand to give to them.

⁹ that he made with Abraham, and by his oath swore to Isaac. ¹⁰ He then confirmed it to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant, ¹¹ saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the allotment that is your* inheritance."

⁵ in order to keep the oath that I swore to your ancestors,* to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day." '" Then I answered and said, "_⌊Let it be so_⌋,* O Yahweh."

⁶ On that day _⌊I swore_⌋* to them to bring them out from the land of Egypt to the land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands.

¹⁵ And also _⌊I myself swore_⌋* to them in the desert not to bring them into the land that I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands—

¹⁴ " 'But* if you do not listen to me and you do not carry out* all these commands, ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self* abhors my regulations, to not carry out* all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you. ¹⁸ " 'And if in spite of these things you do not listen to me, then* I will continue to discipline you seven times for your sins. ¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your strength; and I will make your heaven like iron* and your land like copper. ²⁰ And your strength shall be consumed _⌊in vain_⌋;* and your land shall not give its produce, and the land's trees shall not give their fruit. ²¹ " 'And if you go against me in hostility and you are not willing to listen to me, then* I will add a plague onto you seven times according to your sins. ²² And I will send _⌊wild animals_⌋* out among you, and they shall make you childless, and they shall cut down your domestic animals, and they shall make you fewer; and your roads shall be desolate. ²³ " 'And if you do not accept correction from* me through these things, but* you go against me in hostility, ²⁴ then* I myself* will also go against you in hostility, and I myself* also will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ And I will bring upon you a sword that seeks vengeance for the covenant, and you shall be gathered to your cities; and I will send a plague in your midst, and you shall be given into the hand of an enemy. ²⁶ At my breaking the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread* for you, then* ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied. ²⁷ " 'And if through this you do not listen to me and you go against me in hostility, ²⁸ then* I will go against you in hostile anger, and also* I myself* will discipline you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ And you shall eat the flesh of your sons; and the flesh of your daughters you shall eat. ³⁰ And I will destroy your high places, and I will cut down your incense altars, and I will place your corpses on your idols' corpses; and my inner self* shall abhor you. ³¹ And I will lay your cities in ruins, and I will lay waste your sanctuaries; and I shall not smell your sacrifices'* appeasing fragrance. ³² And I myself* will lay waste the land, and your enemies who are living in it shall be appalled over it. ³³ And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw a sword behind you; and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a ruin. ³⁴ Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths all the days of its lying desolate, and you shall be in the land of your enemies; then the land shall rest, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths. ³⁵ All the days of its lying desolate it shall rest for the time* that it had not rested during your Sabbaths while you were living on it. ³⁶ As for* the ones who remain among you, I will bring* fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight _⌊before_⌋* a sword, and they shall fall, but* there shall not be a pursuer. ³⁷ And they shall stumble over _⌊one another_⌋* as _⌊from before_⌋* a sword, but* there shall not be a pursuer; and _⌊you shall have no resistance_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* your enemies. ³⁸ And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you. ³⁹ And because of their guilt, the ones among you who remain shall decay in the land of their enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their ancestors,* they shall decay with them. ⁴⁰ " 'But* when they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors* in their infidelity that they displayed against me, and moreover that they went against me in hostility— ⁴¹ I myself* also* went against them in hostility, and I brought them into the land of their enemies—or if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and then they pay for their guilt, ⁴² I will remember* my covenant with Jacob; and I will remember also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. ⁴³ And the land shall be deserted by them, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths in its being desolate from them, and they themselves* must pay for their guilt, _⌊simply because_⌋* they rejected my regulations, and their inner self* abhorred my statutes. ⁴⁴ And _⌊in spite of_⌋* this, _⌊when they are_⌋* in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am Yahweh their God. ⁴⁵ And I will remember the first covenant for them*—whom I brought out from the land of Egypt _⌊in the sight of_⌋* the nations _⌊to be their God_⌋.* I am Yahweh.'" ⁴⁶ These are the rules and the regulations and the laws that Yahweh gave between himself and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on _⌊Mount Sinai_⌋* _⌊through_⌋* Moses.

¹⁵ "_⌊And then_⌋* if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God _⌊by diligently observing_⌋* all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you: ¹⁶ "You shall* be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field. ¹⁷ "Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ "You shall be cursed _⌊when you come in_⌋,* and you shall be cursed _⌊when you go out_⌋.* ²⁰ "Yahweh will send upon you* the curse,* the panic,* and the threat* _⌊in everything that you undertake_⌋,* _⌊until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* the evil of your deeds in that* you have forsaken me. ²¹ Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you _⌊until it consumes you_⌋* from the land that you are going to,* to take possession of it. ²² Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword* and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you _⌊until you perish_⌋.* ²³ And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. ²⁴ Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋.* ²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be _⌊anyone to frighten them away_⌋.* ²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.* ²⁸ Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. ²⁹ And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed _⌊all the time_⌋,* and there will not be _⌊anyone who will rescue you_⌋. * ³⁰ You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep* with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. ³¹ Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right _⌊before you_⌋,* and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and _⌊there shall not be anyone who rescues you_⌋.* ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and _⌊you will be looking on_⌋* _⌊longingly_⌋* for* them all day, _⌊but you will be powerless to do anything_⌋.* ³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.* ³⁴ You shall become mad _⌊because of what your eyes shall see_⌋.* ³⁵ Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which _⌊you will not be able to be healed_⌋,* from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. ³⁶ Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors* have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there. ³⁸ "You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. ³⁹ You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress* them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.* ⁴⁰ There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives* shall drop off. ⁴¹ You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be _⌊yours_⌋,* for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. ⁴³ The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail. ⁴⁵ "And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* because _⌊you did not listen_⌋* to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊by observing_⌋* his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. ⁴⁶ And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring _⌊forever_⌋.* ⁴⁷ "_⌊Because_⌋* of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, ⁴⁸ then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place* a yoke of iron on your neck _⌊until he has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁴⁹ Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, _⌊a nation whose language you will not understand_⌋,* ⁵⁰ _⌊a grim-faced nation_⌋* _⌊who does not show respect_⌋* to the old and the young and does not show pity. ⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁵² And it shall besiege you in all your towns _⌊until your high and fortified walls fall_⌋,* which you are trusting in* _⌊throughout your land_⌋;* and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. ⁵³ And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁴ The most refined and the very sensitive* man among you _⌊shall be mean with his brother_⌋* and _⌊against his beloved wife_⌋* and against the rest* of his children that he has left over, ⁵⁵ _⌊by refraining from giving_⌋* to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him _⌊during the siege and distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁶ The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall* not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, _⌊shall be mean to her beloved husband_⌋* and against her son and against her daughter, ⁵⁷ and even concerning her afterbirth _⌊that goes out_⌋* from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon her in your _⌊towns_⌋.* ⁵⁸ "If _⌊you do not diligently observe_⌋* all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, ⁵⁹ then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. ⁶⁰ And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which _⌊you were in dread_⌋* _⌊because of them_⌋.* ⁶¹ Also any illness and any plague* that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. ⁶² And you shall remain _⌊only a few people_⌋* in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. ⁶³ _⌊And then_⌋* as Yahweh delighted over you _⌊to make you prosperous_⌋* to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you* and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. ⁶⁴ And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor* your ancestors,* gods of wood and stone. ⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.* ⁶⁶ And _⌊your life shall hang in doubt before you_⌋,* and you shall be startled* night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, '_⌊If only it was evening_⌋!'* and in the evening you shall say '_⌊If only it was morning_⌋!'* because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. ⁶⁸ And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I _⌊promised_⌋* to you that '_⌊You shall not see it again_⌋!'* And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer."

¹⁶ If you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, _⌊Yahweh's anger will be kindled_⌋* against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you."

¹¹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and _⌊they served_⌋* the Baals. ¹² They abandoned Yahweh the God of their ancestors,* who brought them out from the land of Egypt. They _⌊followed_⌋* other gods from the gods of the people who were around them; and they bowed down to them, and they provoked the anger of Yahweh. ¹³ They abandoned Yahweh, and they served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

⁶ And again, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. They served the Baals, the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, and the gods of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and Philistines; they abandoned Yahweh and did not serve him. ⁷ And _⌊the anger of Yahweh burned_⌋* against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ⁸ They crushed and oppressed the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in that year; for eighteen years they crushed all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* who were beyond the Jordan, in the land of the Amorites,* which is in Gilead. ⁹ The _⌊Ammonites_⌋* crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was very distressed. ¹⁰ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals." ¹¹ And Yahweh said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians,* the Amorites,* from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and from the Philistines?* ¹² And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites,* and the Maonites* oppressed you, you cried out to me, and I delivered you from their hand. ¹³ Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. Therefore I will no longer deliver you. ¹⁴ Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your trouble." ¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Yahweh, "We have sinned; _⌊do to us accordingly as you see fit_⌋;* only please deliver us this day." ¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel. ¹⁷ And the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* were summoned,* and they camped in Gilead. And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered and camped at Mizpah. ¹⁸ The people, the ones commanding Gilead, _⌊said to each other_⌋,* "Who is the man that will begin to fight against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋?* He will be as head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."

⁷ From the days of our ancestors* until this day we have been in great guilt, and because of our sins we ourselves, our kings, and our priests have been handed into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plunder, and to utter shame, as it is this day.

²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. ²³ You made their children* numerous like the stars of the heavens and brought them to the land that you told their ancestors* to enter in order to take possession. ²⁴ So the children* went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites; you gave them into their hand, and their kings and the nations of the land to do with them according to their pleasure. ²⁵ And they captured fortified cities and a fertile land and took possession of houses filled with every good thing: hewn cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, and many fruit trees. They ate and became full, and they became fat and took delight in your great goodness. ²⁶ "But they rebelled and were rebellious against you and cast your law* behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them to turn back to you, and they did great blasphemies. ²⁷ Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemy, and they brought trouble to them. Then in the time of their trouble they cried out to you, and you heard from the heavens, and according to your great compassions, you gave them saviors, and you saved them from the hand of their enemies. ²⁸ But when they had rest they returned to doing evil before you, and you abandoned them in the hand of their enemies, and they ruled over them. Then they returned and cried out to you, and from the heavens you heard and many times rescued them according to your compassions. ²⁹ You warned them so that they would return to your law.* Yet they acted arrogantly and did not listen to your commandments but sinned against your judgments that a person must do so that they may live. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not listen. ³⁰ You were patient toward them for many years, and you have warned them by your spirit through the hand of your prophets, but they did not listen. So you gave them into the hand of the nations of the lands.

² You with your hand drove out the nations, but them* you planted. You harmed the peoples, but them* you let spread out. ³ For not with their sword did they possess the land, and their arm did not give them victory. Rather it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, because you delighted in them.

⁵⁴ So he brought them to his holy territory,* this mountain his right hand acquired.* ⁵⁵ And he drove out nations before them and allocated them for an inheritance by boundary line, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

⁴⁴ And he gave to them the lands of the nations, and they inherited the labor of the peoples, ⁴⁵ so that they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise Yah.*

²³ But I only commanded them this word, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Obey my voice, and I will be to you God, and you will be to me people, and you must walk in all of the way that I command you, so that it goes well with you.' ²⁴ Yet they did not obey, and they did not incline their ear, but they walked in their own plans, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and _⌊they became worse instead of better_⌋.*

⁷ for I solemnly admonished your ancestors* in the day of my leading them out from the land of Egypt and up to this day, _⌊admonishing persistently_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "Obey my voice." ⁸ But they did not obey and they did not incline their ear. Instead each one walked in the stubbornness of his* evil heart. Therefore, I brought on them all the words of this covenant which I commanded them* to do, and they did not do it.'"*

⁸ Jerusalem sinned grievously, thus she became an objection of derision; all those who honored her despise her because they have seen her nakedness. She herself groans and turns away.

¹⁸ Yahweh is righteous; I have rebelled against _⌊his word_⌋.* Please hear, all the nations, And see my pain; My young women* and young men went into captivity.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! ¹⁷ Because of this, our heart has become faint, because of these, our eyes have become dim.

⁸ But they rebelled against me, and they were not willing to listen to me; each one _⌊did not throw away_⌋* the detestable things of their eyes; and _⌊they did not abandon_⌋* the idols of Egypt, and I decided to pour out my rage on them, to fully vent my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

¹⁸ "And I said to their children in the desert, 'You must not go in the statutes of your parents;* you must not keep their regulations, and you must not make yourself unclean with their idols.

²¹ But the children rebelled against me; _⌊they did not walk in my statutes_⌋,* and _⌊they did not observe my regulations_⌋,* which if a person does them, then he will live by them. My Sabbaths they desecrated, and I decided to pour out my rage on them, to finish my anger against them in the desert.

⁴ And I prayed to Yahweh my God, and I made confession and I said, "O Lord, the great and awesome God, keeping the covenant and loyal love with those who love him and with those who keep his commandments, ⁵ we have sinned and we have done wrong and we acted wickedly and we rebelled and have been turning aside from your commandments and from your ordinances. ⁶ We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors* and to all the people of the land.

¹⁰ and we have not listened to the voice of Yahweh our God, by following his law _⌊which he placed before us_⌋* by the hand of his servants the prophets. ¹¹ "And all Israel transgressed your law and turned aside so as not to listen to your voice, and so the curse and the oath which was written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. ¹² And so he has carried out his words which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, to bring upon us a great calamity which was not done under all of heaven as it was done in Jerusalem. ¹³ Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all of this calamity has come upon us, and _⌊we have not implored_⌋* the face of Yahweh our God so as to turn from our iniquities and to attend closely to your faithfulness.* ¹⁴ So Yahweh has kept watch over the* calamity, and now he has brought it upon us. Indeed, Yahweh our God is righteous concerning all his works* that he has done, but we have not listened to his voice.

² "Yahweh _⌊was very angry with your ancestors_⌋.* ³ You must say to them: 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "Return to me," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts, "and I will return to you," says Yahweh of hosts. ⁴ "Do not be like your ancestors,* to whom the former prophets proclaimed, saying, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "Return from your evil ways and your evil deeds!" ' But they did not hear* and they did not pay attention* to me," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁰ Thus you also, when you have done all the _⌊things you were ordered to do_⌋,* say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done what we were obligated to do.'"

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you.

¹⁰ For as many as are of the works of the law are under a curse, for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things that are written in the book of the law to do them."*

¹⁰ For whoever keeps the whole law but stumbles in one point only has become guilty of all of it.

²⁶ I call* to witness against you today the heaven and the earth, that you will perish soon and completely from the land that you are crossing the Jordan into it to take possession of it; _⌊you will not live long on it_⌋,* but you will be completely destroyed.

¹⁶ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Look, you are about to lie down with your ancestors,* and this people will arise and they* will play the prostitute after _⌊the foreign gods_⌋* of the land _⌊to which they are going_⌋.* ¹⁷ And _⌊my anger shall flare up against them_⌋* on that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they* shall become as prey, and disasters and troubles shall find* them,* and they* shall say on that day, 'Is it not because our* God is not in our* midst that these disasters have found* us?'*

²⁴ They will become weakened by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter pestilence; and the teeth of wild animals I will send against them, with the poison of the creeping things in the dust; ²⁵ From outside her boundaries the sword will make her childless, and from inside, terror; both for the young man and also the young woman, the infant along with the gray-headed man.

¹⁵ But just as all the good things* came to you that Yahweh your God promised, so will Yahweh bring to you all the bad things* until he has destroyed you from this good land that Yahweh your God has given to you. ¹⁶ If you transgress the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded to you, and you go and serve other gods and bow down to them, _⌊Yahweh's anger will be kindled_⌋* against you, and you will perish quickly from the good land that he has given to you."

¹⁵ And they came and besieged him in Abel Beth Maacah. They threw up a siege ramp against the city, and they stood against the ramparts. And all the army who were with Joab were battering to cause the wall to fall.

¹² Although they fast, I am not listening to their cry of entreaty. And although they present burnt offering and grain offering, I am not favorable to them. But by the sword, and by the famine, and by the plague, I am about to destroy them." ¹³ Then I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh, look, the prophets are saying to them, 'You will not see the sword, and famine will not be yours, but reliable peace I will give to you in this place.'" ¹⁴ And Yahweh said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies* in my name. I have not sent them, and I have not commanded them, and I have not spoken to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, and a divination, worthless, and the deceitfulness of their _⌊minds_⌋."* ¹⁵ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who prophecy in my name though I have not sent them, yet they are saying, "Sword and famine will not be in this land." "By the sword and by the famine those prophets will perish.

¹ Then Yahweh said to me, "Even if Moses and Samuel stood _⌊before me_⌋,* my heart would not be to this people. Send them away from my _⌊sight_⌋,* and let them go out. ² _⌊And then_⌋* if they say to you, 'Where shall we go?' Then you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh,
"Those who are destined for the plague, to the plague, and those who are destined for the sword, to the sword, and those who are destined for the famine, to the famine, and those who are destined for the captivity, to the captivity." ' ³ "And I will summon* over them four types of calamity," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "the sword to kill, and the dogs to drag away, and the birds* of the air and the wild animals* of the earth to devour and to destroy.

⁴ "They will die by diseases, they will not be mourned, and they will not be buried. They will be as dung on the face of the earth. And they will perish by the sword and they will perish by the famine. And their dead bodies* will become food for the birds* of the air, and for the wild animals* of the earth."

¹⁰ And I will send among them the sword, the famine, and the plague, until they perish from the land that I gave to them and their ancestors.'"*

³⁶ "So now _⌊therefore_⌋,* thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, concerning this city, of which you are saying, 'It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the plague':

⁴ For thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, that were torn down to make a defense against the siege ramps and against the sword:

⁶ In the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, the famine in the city became severe and there was no food for the people of the land.

²¹ They lie in the soil of the streets, young and old; my young women* and young men, they have fallen by the sword; you have slain on the day of _⌊your anger_⌋,* you have slaughtered and not shown mercy. ²² You have summoned my horror from all around, as if for a feast day; no one on the day of Yahweh's anger is a fugitive and a survivor; whoever I have cared for and reared, my enemy has destroyed.

³ Even the jackal bears the beast and nurses their cubs; but the daughter of my people has become ruthless, like ostriches in the wilderness. ⁴ The tongue of the nursling cleaves to its palate in thirst. Children beg for food, _⌊no one lays it out before them_⌋.* ⁵ The ones who eat delicacies, they are ruined in the streets; the ones nurtured in purple lie on piles of trash. ⁶ The iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom; it was overthrown in a moment and no hands were laid on her. ⁷ Her princes were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk; their bodies were more ruddy than rubies, sapphire their appearance. ⁸ Now their appearance is blacker than soot, they are not recognized in the streets; their skin has shriveled on their bones, it has become dry like wood. ⁹ Happier were the victims of the sword than the victims of famine; they have pined away, very hungry for the crops of my field. ¹⁰ The hands of compassionate women, have cooked their children; they became as something to eat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

²¹ For thus says the Lord Yahweh: "How much more when I send my four punishments—the evil sword, and famine, and a fierce animal, and a plague—to Jerusalem to cut it off, both human and animal!

²² In his right hand is the divination for Jerusalem, to put up battering rams, to open a mouth for slaughter,* _⌊to raise the battle cry_⌋,* to put up battering rams against gates, to build a siege ramp, to build siege works.*

⁶ However, did not my words and my regulations which I commanded my servants the prophets overtake your ancestors?* And they repented and said, 'Yahweh of hosts planned to do with us according to our ways, and according to our deeds so he has dealt with us.'" '"

³⁵ Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

¹⁹ Your way was through the sea, and your path* through many waters. Yet your footprints were not discerned.*

² Cloud and thick darkness are surrounding him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

²⁴ Look, the siege ramps have come up to the city to capture it, and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it, because of the sword, the famine, and the plague, and what you spoke happened, and look, you are seeing it.*

⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things."

²² And they fell on their faces, and they said, "God, God of the spirits of all flesh, will one man sin and you become angry toward the entire community?"

¹⁶ "Let Yahweh, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the community

² O you who hear prayer, to you all flesh will come.

⁸ Yet now Yahweh, you are our father; we are the clay and you are our _⌊potter_⌋,* and we all are the work of your hand.

¹⁷ 'Ah Lord Yahweh! Look, you made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. _⌊Nothing_⌋* is too difficult for you,

⁶ and all flesh will see the salvation of God.'"*

² just as you have given him authority over all flesh, in order that he would give eternal life to them—everyone whom you have given him.

²⁹ Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, also of the Gentiles, ³⁰ since God is one, who will justify _⌊those who are circumcised_⌋* by faith and _⌊those who are uncircumcised_⌋* through faith.

¹⁷ Therefore he brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, and he killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary. He showed no mercy on a young man, a virgin, the elderly, or decrepit. He delivered all into his hand.

⁷ And I will lay waste the plans* of Judah and Jerusalem in this place, and I will bring them to ruin by the sword _⌊before_⌋* their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life, and I will give their dead bodies* as food to the birds* of heaven and to the animals* of the earth. ⁸ And I will make this city a horror, and an object of hissing, everyone who passes by it will be appalled, and will hiss because of all its wounds. ⁹ And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons, and the flesh of their daughters, and each one will eat the flesh of his neighbor in the siege and in the distress which their enemies and those who seek their life inflict on them." ' ¹⁰ "Then you shall break the jar before the eyes of the men who go with you. ¹¹ And you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "So I will break this people and this city as one breaks the vessel of the potter, so that it is not able to be repaired again. And in Topheth they will bury _⌊until there is no room to bury_⌋.* ¹² Thus will I do to this place," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and to its inhabitants, to make this city like Topheth.

⁵ And I will give all the wealth of this city, and all its acquisitions, and all its precious items, and all of the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, and they will seize them, and they will bring them to Babylon.

⁹ He burned the temple of Yahweh, the palace of the king, and all of the houses of Jerusalem; every large house he burned with fire.

¹⁹ And they burned the house of God. And they shattered the walls of Jerusalem and burned its citadels with fire and destroyed all the vessels of its treasuries.

¹⁰ _⌊Your holy cities_⌋* have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. ¹¹ _⌊Our holy and beautiful temple_⌋,* where our ancestors* praised you has _⌊been burned_⌋* by fire, and all our precious objects have become ruins.*

¹⁸ The children are gathering wood, and the fathers are kindling the fire, and the women are kneading dough to make sacrificial cakes for the queen of heaven, and they pour out libations to other gods for the sake of provoking me to anger.

²⁷ But if you do not listen to me, to declare holy the day of the Sabbath, and to not carry a burden and enter through the gates of Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbath, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it will devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it will not be quenched." '"

¹³ And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be unclean like the place of Topheth, all the houses where they made smoke offerings upon their roofs to all the host of heaven, and where they poured out libations to other gods." '"

¹⁰ For I have set my face against this city for evil and not for good," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. It will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it with fire." '

⁸ "But it will be that the nation or kingdom that will not serve him, Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put his neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will punish that nation with the sword, and with the famine, and with the plague," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "until I have destroyed it with my hand. ⁹ And you, you must not listen to your prophets, and to your diviners, and to your dreamers, and to your interpreters of signs, and to your sorcerers who are _⌊saying_⌋,* 'You will not serve the king of Babylon.' ¹⁰ For they are prophesying to you a lie, so that you will be removed from your land, and I will drive you away, and you will perish.

⁸ And the Chaldeans burned the palace* of the king and the houses* of the people with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

¹⁷ But certainly we will do _⌊everything_⌋* that went out from our mouths,* to make smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out to her libations just as we did, we, and our ancestors,* our kings, and our officials, in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, for then _⌊we had enough to eat_⌋,* and we were well-off, and we did not see disaster. ¹⁸ But _⌊since_⌋* we stopped making smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we have lacked everything, and by the sword and by the famine we have perished. ¹⁹ And indeed, when we were making smoke offerings to the queen of heaven and _⌊pouring out_⌋* to her libations, was it not _⌊with the consent of_⌋* our husbands that we made for her sacrificial cakes _⌊marked with her image_⌋,* and we poured out to her libations?"

²⁵ Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'You and your wives have promised with your mouths* and with your hands* you have fulfilled, _⌊saying_⌋,* "We certainly will carry out our vows that we vowed, to make smoke offerings to the queen of the heavens,* and to pour out to her libations." You must certainly keep your vows and you must certainly carry out your vows.'

¹³ And he burned the _⌊temple_⌋* of Yahweh, and the palace* of the king, and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great house he burned with fire.

¹¹ Yahweh has completed his anger, he has poured out _⌊his fierce anger_⌋;* he has kindled a fire in Zion, it consumed her* foundations.

⁷ And the king was angry and sent his troops and* destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

²¹ And Yahweh smelled the soothing fragrance, and Yahweh said _⌊to himself_⌋,* "_⌊Never again will I curse_⌋* the ground for the sake of humankind, because the inclination of the heart of humankind is evil from his youth. _⌊Nor will I ever again destroy_⌋* all life as I have done.

⁷ Remember, _⌊do not forget_⌋,* that you provoked Yahweh your God in the desert, and from the day that you went out from the land of Egypt until _⌊you came to this place_⌋* you were rebelling against Yahweh. ⁸ "And remember at Horeb you provoked Yahweh, and Yahweh became angry enough to destroy you. ⁹ _⌊When I went up the mountain_⌋* to receive _⌊the stone tablets_⌋,* the tablets of the covenant that Yahweh _⌊made_⌋* with you, and remained on the mountain forty days* and forty nights,* I did not eat food and I did not drink water. ¹⁰ And Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone written with the finger of God, and on them was writing according to all the words that Yahweh spoke with you at the mountain, from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. ¹¹ _⌊And then_⌋* at the end of forty days* and forty nights,* Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. ¹² And Yahweh said to me, 'Come now, go down quickly from this mountain because your people behave corruptly whom you brought out from Egypt, for they turned quickly from the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made for themselves a cast image.'

²² "And also at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked Yahweh to anger. ²³ And when Yahweh sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Go up and take possession of the land that I have given you,' you rebelled against the command of Yahweh your God, and you did not believe him, and you did not listen to his voice. ²⁴ You have been rebellious toward Yahweh _⌊from the day I have known you_⌋.*

⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* secretly did things which were not right, against Yahweh their God; they built high places for themselves in all their towns, from the watchtower up to the fortified city. ¹⁰ They set up for themselves stone pillars and poles of Asherah worship on every high hill and under every green tree. ¹¹ They burned incense there on all the high places, like the nations which Yahweh deported before them, and they did evil things to provoke Yahweh. ¹² They served idols which Yahweh had said to them, "You shall not do this thing!" ¹³ Yahweh warned Israel and Judah by the hand of his every prophet, with every seer saying, "Turn from all of your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my ordinances, according to all the law which I commanded your ancestors,* which I sent to you by the hand of my servants the prophets." ¹⁴ But they did not listen and they stiffened their necks, like the necks of their ancestors* who did not believe in Yahweh their God. ¹⁵ They rejected his statutes, his covenant which he _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors,* and his warnings which he gave to them; and they went after the idols, became vain, and went after all the nations which were all around them, which Yahweh had commanded them not to do as they did. ¹⁶ They abandoned all the commands of Yahweh their God and made for themselves two molten calf-shaped idols; they made a pole of Asherah worship and bowed down to the army of the heavens and served Baal. ¹⁷ They made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, they practiced divination and read omens, and they sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of Yahweh to provoke him. ¹⁸ So Yahweh was very angry with Israel and he removed them from his presence; none remained except the tribe of Judah alone. ¹⁹ Even Judah did not keep the commands of Yahweh their God, and they walked in the customs of Israel which they introduced, ²⁰ so Yahweh rejected all the offspring of Israel and punished them, and he gave them into the hand of the plunderers until he banished them from his presence.

¹⁶ "But they and our ancestors* acted arrogantly and stiffened their neck and did not listen to your commandments. ¹⁷ They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders that you did among them. They stiffened their neck and in their rebellion _⌊determined_⌋* to return to their slavery. But you are a God of forgiveness, gracious and compassionate, _⌊slow to anger_⌋,* abundant in loyal love, so you did not abandon them. ¹⁸ Even when they made for themselves a molten idol of a calf and said, 'This is your God who brought you out from Egypt,' and committed great blasphemies. ¹⁹ But you in your many mercies did not abandon them in the desert. The column of cloud that was over them in the day did not cease to leave them on the way, and the column of fire by night that gave light to them on the way that they went. ²⁰ And you gave your good Spirit to instruct them and did not withhold your manna from their mouth and gave them water for their thirst. ²¹ Forty years you sustained them in the desert—they were not in need. Their clothing did not wear out and their feet did not swell. ²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan. ²³ You made their children* numerous like the stars of the heavens and brought them to the land that you told their ancestors* to enter in order to take possession. ²⁴ So the children* went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites; you gave them into their hand, and their kings and the nations of the land to do with them according to their pleasure. ²⁵ And they captured fortified cities and a fertile land and took possession of houses filled with every good thing: hewn cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, and many fruit trees. They ate and became full, and they became fat and took delight in your great goodness. ²⁶ "But they rebelled and were rebellious against you and cast your law* behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them to turn back to you, and they did great blasphemies. ²⁷ Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemy, and they brought trouble to them. Then in the time of their trouble they cried out to you, and you heard from the heavens, and according to your great compassions, you gave them saviors, and you saved them from the hand of their enemies. ²⁸ But when they had rest they returned to doing evil before you, and you abandoned them in the hand of their enemies, and they ruled over them. Then they returned and cried out to you, and from the heavens you heard and many times rescued them according to your compassions. ²⁹ You warned them so that they would return to your law.* Yet they acted arrogantly and did not listen to your commandments but sinned against your judgments that a person must do so that they may live. They turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not listen. ³⁰ You were patient toward them for many years, and you have warned them by your spirit through the hand of your prophets, but they did not listen. So you gave them into the hand of the nations of the lands. ³¹ But in your great compassions you did not put an end to them, and you did not abandon them. For you are a gracious and compassionate God. ³² "And now our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God who keeps his covenant and loyal love, do not belittle in your presence all of the hardship that is found in us, our kings, our officials, our priests, our prophets, our ancestors,* and all of our people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until this day. ³³ You are righteous in everything that has come on us, for you dealt faithfully, and we have acted wickedly. ³⁴ Our kings, our officials, our priests, and our ancestors* did not keep your law* and did not listen to your commandments and statutes that you declared to them. ³⁵ And in their kingdom and in the greatness you gave to them, and in the wide and fertile land that you gave before them, they did not serve you and did not turn from their evil deeds. ³⁶ Behold, we are slaves to this day, and the land that you have given to our ancestors* to eat its fruits and enjoy its goodness—behold, we are slaves in it! ³⁷ Its rich yield goes to the kings whom you have given over us because of our sins, and they are ruling over our dead bodies and our livestock at their pleasure. We are in great trouble.

⁶ We have sinned along with our ancestors.* We have committed iniquity; we have incurred guilt. ⁷ Our ancestors* in Egypt did not understand your wonderful works. They did not remember your many acts of loyal love, and so they rebelled by the sea at _⌊the Red Sea_⌋.*

¹⁰ But* they _⌊were the ones who_⌋* rebelled, and they grieved _⌊his Holy Spirit_⌋,* so* he _⌊became an enemy to them_⌋;* he himself fought against them.

⁷ And I brought you to the land of the orchard, to eat its fruit, and its good things.* But you entered and defiled my land, and my inheritance you made a detestable thing.*

²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame, and let our disgrace cover us. For against Yahweh our God we have sinned, we and our ancestors,* from our youth and until this day. and we have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh our God.'

²² For I did not speak with your ancestors,* nor did I command them in the day of bringing them out from the land of Egypt, concerning the matter of burnt offering and sacrifice. ²³ But I only commanded them this word, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Obey my voice, and I will be to you God, and you will be to me people, and you must walk in all of the way that I command you, so that it goes well with you.' ²⁴ Yet they did not obey, and they did not incline their ear, but they walked in their own plans, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and _⌊they became worse instead of better_⌋.* ²⁵ From the day that your ancestors* came out from the land of Egypt until this day I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, day after day, _⌊sending again and again_⌋.* ²⁶ Yet they have not listened to me and they have not inclined their ear, but they have hardened their neck, they did more evil than their ancestors.*

¹⁹ Look, the sound of the cry for help of the daughter of my people from a distant land, 'Is Yahweh not in Zion? Is her king not in her?' Why have they provoked me to anger with their images, with idols of a foreign land?"

²¹ I spoke to you _⌊in the times you were secure_⌋,* and you said, 'I will not listen!' This was your way from your youth, for you have not obeyed my voice.

⁷ 'Yet you have not listened to me,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'so that you* have provoked me to anger with the work of your hands for your own harm.'

¹⁵ 'And you trusted in your beauty, and you prostituted on account of your name, and you poured out your fornication on every one passing by, saying, "Let it be his." ¹⁶ And you took from your clothes and you made for yourself colorful* shrines, and you prostituted on them; _⌊this had not happened before_⌋,* and it _⌊will not continue to happen_⌋.* ¹⁷ And you took _⌊your beautiful jewelry_⌋* made from my gold and from my silver that I had given to you, and you made for yourself _⌊male images_⌋,* and you prostituted with them. ¹⁸ And you took the clothes of your beautiful finished cloth, and you covered them and my oil and my incense you set _⌊before them_⌋.* ¹⁹ And my bread that I gave to you, finely milled flour and oil and honey with which I fed you, then you set it _⌊before them_⌋* as a _⌊pleasing odor_⌋,* and so it was,' _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. ²⁰ 'And you took your sons and your daughters whom you had borne for me, and you sacrificed them to them to be eaten,* _⌊as if your whorings were not enough_⌋.* ²¹ And you slaughtered my children, and you gave them _⌊to be sacrificed to them_⌋.* ²² And in all of your detestable things and your fornication you did not remember the days of your childhood _⌊when you were naked and bare_⌋,* when you were kicking about in your blood.

²⁸ And I brought them to the land that _⌊I swore_⌋* to give* to them, and they saw every high hill and every leafy tree, and they offered their sacrifices, and they presented there the provocation of their offering, and they gave there their fragrant incense offering, and they poured out their libations there.

³ and they prostituted themselves in Egypt in their childhood; they were prostituting themselves there, and their breasts were fondled, and there they caressed the bosoms of their virginity.

⁴³ And I said to* the one worn out with adulteries, 'Now they will prostitute her concerning her fornication, even her.'* ⁴⁴ And so they went to her like going to a female* prostitute; and thus they went to Oholah and to Oholibah, the women of obscene conduct.

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked people and uncircumcised in hearts and in your* ears! You constantly resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so also do you! ⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand about the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become, ⁵³ you who received the law by directions of angels and have not observed it!"

⁷ At that time, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, on the mountain which _⌊faces_⌋* Jerusalem and for Molech, the abomination of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ⁸ Thus he did for all of his foreign wives, offering incense and sacrificing to their gods.

⁴ He built altars in the temple of Yahweh about which Yahweh had said, "I will put my name in Jerusalem." ⁵ He built an altar to all of the host of heaven in the two courtyards of the temple of Yahweh. ⁶ He made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying and divination, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He increased the doing of evil in the eyes of Yahweh to provoke him. ⁷ He put the image of the Asherah that he had made in the temple which Yahweh had said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this temple and in Jerusalem which I have chosen from all of the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever.

¹⁶ Moreover, Manasseh shed very much innocent blood until he filled Jerusalem _⌊from one end to another_⌋,* apart from his sin which he caused Judah to sin by doing evil in the eyes of Yahweh.

¹⁶ "Thus says Yahweh, 'Look I am bringing evil to this place and upon its inhabitants, according to all of the words of that scroll that the king of Judah has read ¹⁷ because they have abandoned me and they have burned incense to other gods, provoking me to anger with all of the works of their hands. My wrath shall be kindled against this place and not be quenched.'"

¹⁵ Moreover, the altar which was in Bethel, the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin, had built, even that altar and the high place, Josiah tore down. Then he burned down the high place and crushed the pole of Asherah worship to dust and burned it with fire.

²⁷ Yahweh had said, "Even Judah I will remove from my face, as I have removed Israel; I will reject this city that I have chosen, even Jerusalem and the house of which I said, 'My name shall be there'!"

³ Surely, it was _⌊on the command_⌋* of Yahweh against Judah to remove them from his sight because of the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he had done. ⁴ Also, for the blood of the innocent that he had shed—and he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood—Yahweh was not willing to forgive.

⁹ Because of these things shall I not punish?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and on a nation who is like this, shall I not take revenge? ¹⁰ Go up through her vineyards and destroy, but you must not make complete destruction. Remove her branches, for they are not to Yahweh. ¹¹ For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt utterly treacherously with me," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

⁶ For thus says Yahweh of hosts, "Cut down trees and heap up a siege ramp against Jerusalem. This is the city that must be punished, its oppression is in its midst. ⁷ As a water well keeps its water cool, so she keeps cool her wickedness. Violence and destruction are heard within her, sickness and wounds* are continually _⌊before me_⌋.*

¹⁴ And in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible. They commit adultery, and they walk in lies,* and they make strong the hands of evildoers, so that they have not turned back each from his wickedness. All of them have become to me like Sodom, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah." ¹⁵ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets,
"Look, I am going to let them eat wormwood and I will give them water of poison to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem went out ungodliness to all the land."

¹⁰ For they are prophesying to you a lie, so that you will be removed from your land, and I will drive you away, and you will perish.

² "And you, son of man,* will you judge? Will you judge the _⌊bloody city_⌋?* Then you must make known to her all of her detestable things! ³ And you must say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "A city pouring out blood in the midst of her; _⌊its time has come_⌋,* and it made idols for itself, becoming unclean. ⁴ By your blood that you poured out you have become guilty, and by your idols that you made you have become unclean, and you have brought your days near, _⌊and your appointed years have come_⌋.* Therefore I have made you a disgrace for the nations and a laughingstock to all of the countries. ⁵ The people near and the people far from you will make fun of you, _⌊the unclean and the terrified_⌋.* ⁶ Look! The princes of Israel, each one according to his strength,* they are in you _⌊for the shedding of blood_⌋.* ⁷ They have treated father and mother with contempt in you; _⌊they violated_⌋* the alien with* extortion; in the midst of you they mistreated the orphan and widow. ⁸ You despised my holy objects; my Sabbaths you profaned. ⁹ Slanderous men are _⌊among you_⌋* to shed blood, and they, _⌊among you_⌋,* eat upon the mountains; they do wickedness in the midst of you. ¹⁰ They uncover the nakedness of a father among* you; they violate a woman unclean of menstruation among* you. ¹¹ And a man does a detestable thing with the wife of his neighbor, and a man defiles his daughter-in-law in wickedness, and a man sexually violates among* you his sister, the daughter of his father. ¹² They take a bribe among* you in order to shed blood; and you take usury, and you make gain from your neighbors by extortion, and so you have forgotten me, _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. ¹³ And look! I strike my hand for your ill-gotten gain that you have made and at your blood that was in the midst of you. ¹⁴ Can your heart endure,* or can your hands be strong at the days in which I am dealing with you? I, Yahweh, I have spoken, and I will act! ¹⁵ I will scatter you among the nations, and I will disperse you through the countries, and I will purge your uncleanness from you. ¹⁶ And I will be profaned by you before the eyes of the nations, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '" ¹⁷ And the word of Yahweh _⌊came_⌋* to me, _⌊saying_⌋,* ¹⁸ "Son of man,* the house of Israel has become as silver dross to me; all of them are as bronze and tin and iron and lead in the midst of a furnace, even as silver dross, silver dross they became! ¹⁹ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Because all of you have become as silver dross, therefore look! I am gathering you to the midst of Jerusalem, ²⁰ like the gathering of silver and bronze and iron and lead and tin to the middle of a furnace to blow fire on it for melting. Thus I will gather in my anger and in my rage, and I will _⌊deposit_⌋* you, and I will melt you. ²¹ And I will gather you, and I will blow on you with the fire of my wrath, and so I will melt you in the midst of her. ²² Thus you will be melted like the melting of silver in the midst of a furnace, and you will know that I, Yahweh, I have poured out my rage on you.'"

³⁷ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together _⌊the way_⌋* a hen gathers her young together under her* wings, and you were not willing!

³³ Nevertheless, it is necessary for me to be on the way today and tomorrow and on the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside Jerusalem. ³⁴ "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How many times I wanted to gather your children together _⌊the way_⌋* a hen gathers* her own brood under her* wings, and you were not willing!

³² "And now our God, the great, mighty, and awesome God who keeps his covenant and loyal love, do not belittle in your presence all of the hardship that is found in us, our kings, our officials, our priests, our prophets, our ancestors,* and all of our people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until this day. ³³ You are righteous in everything that has come on us, for you dealt faithfully, and we have acted wickedly. ³⁴ Our kings, our officials, our priests, and our ancestors* did not keep your law* and did not listen to your commandments and statutes that you declared to them.

⁴ Ah, sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken Yahweh; they have despised the holy one of Israel. They are estranged and gone backward. ⁵ Why do you want to be beaten again? You continue in rebellion. The whole of the head is sick, and the whole of the heart is faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot and up to the head there is no health in it; bruise and sore and bleeding wound have not been cleansed, and they have not been bound up and not softened with the oil.

²³ Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Every one loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan and the legal dispute of the widow does not come before them.

¹⁴ So Yahweh cut off head and tail from Israel, palm branch and reed in one day. ¹⁵ Elders* and _⌊the respectable_⌋* are the head, and prophets* who teach lies* are the tail.

²⁶ As the shame of a thief when he is caught in the act, so the house of Israel will be ashamed. They, their kings, their officials, and their priests, and their prophets.

⁶ Look! The princes of Israel, each one according to his strength,* they are in you _⌊for the shedding of blood_⌋.*

²⁵ The conspiracy of its prophets in the midst of her is like a roaring lion that is tearing prey. They devour people, and they take wealth and treasure; they make its widows numerous in the midst of her. ²⁶ Its priests treat my law violently, and they profane my holy objects; they do not distinguish between a holy object and what is unholy, or between the clean and the unclean. They do not teach the difference, and they hide their eyes from my Sabbaths, and so I am profaned in the midst of them. ²⁷ Its officials are like wolves tearing prey in its midst, to pour out blood, to destroy people, to make dishonest gain. ²⁸ And for them its prophets plaster whitewash; they are seeing falseness and are practicing divination for them by lying, saying, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh,' and Yahweh has not spoken. ²⁹ They severely oppress the people of the land, and _⌊they committed robbery_⌋,* and they mistreated the needy and the poor, and they oppressed the alien _⌊without_⌋* justice.

⁶ We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors* and to all the people of the land.

⁸ Yahweh, on us is open shame, on our kings, on our princes, and on our ancestors,* because we have sinned against you.

¹ And I said, "Listen, O heads of Jacob and leaders of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice? ² Those of you who are haters of good and lovers of evil, who tear their skin from them and their flesh from their bones, ³ and who eat the flesh of my people, and strip their skin from them, and break their bones, and chop them like meat in the pot, and like flesh in the midst of a cooking pot." ⁴ Then they will cry to Yahweh, but he will not answer them. He will hide his face from them at that time, when they have made their deeds evil. ⁵ Thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who are leading my people astray, who are biting with their teeth and proclaim, "Peace," but whoever puts nothing into their mouths they declare war against.

⁹ Hear this, O rulers of the house of Jacob and leaders of the house of Israel, those detesting justice and perverting all that is right, ¹⁰ he who builds Zion with blood and Jerusalem with wickedness. ¹¹ Its rulers judge for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money. But they lean on Yahweh, saying, "Is not Yahweh in our midst? Disaster will not come upon us." ¹² Therefore on account of you Zion will be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem will be a heap of rubble, and _⌊the temple mount_⌋* as a high place in a forest.

¹ Woe to you, O rebellious and defiled one! The oppressing city! ² She listens to no voice; she does not accept correction. In Yahweh she does not trust; to her God she does not draw near. ³ Her officials in her midst are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave nothing until the morning. ⁴ Her prophets are arrogant men of treachery; her priests have defiled that which is holy; they do violence to the law.

¹⁵ And Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* had repeatedly and persistently sent to them by the hand of his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. ¹⁶ But they were mocking the messengers of God and despising his words and scoffing at his prophets until the wrath of Yahweh rose against his people until there was no remedy.

²⁷ Those who say to the tree, 'You are my father,' and to the stone, 'You gave birth to me.' For they have turned their _⌊backs_⌋* to me, and not their faces. But in the time of their trouble they say, 'Arise and save us.'

¹³ And now, because of your doing all these things," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and _⌊I have spoken to you over and over again_⌋,* and you have not listened, and I called you, and you have not answered,

²⁴ Yet they did not obey, and they did not incline their ear, but they walked in their own plans, in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and _⌊they became worse instead of better_⌋.*

¹⁷ Like the wind from the east I will scatter them _⌊before_⌋* the enemy. I will show them my back and not my face in the day of their disaster.'"

³ "From the thirteenth year of Josiah, the son of Amon, the king of Judah, even up to this day, these twenty-three years* the word of Yahweh has come to me, and _⌊I have spoken to you over and over again_⌋,* but you have not listened. ⁴ And though Yahweh has sent all his servants the prophets to you _⌊over and over again_⌋* you have not listened, and you have not inclined your ear to hear,

⁵ to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I have sent to you, _⌊over and over again_⌋,* though you have not listened,

¹⁵ And I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, _⌊I have sent them over and over again_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* 'Turn back please each one from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and you must not go after other gods to serve them, _⌊so that you may live_⌋* on the land that I gave to you and to your ancestors.'* But you did not incline your ear and you did not listen to me.

⁴ And I sent to you all my servants the prophets, _⌊sending over and over again_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "Please, you must not do this detestable thing that I hate."

¹⁶ And he brought me to the inner courtyard of the house of Yahweh, and look, at the doorway of the temple of Yahweh, between the portico and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east, and they were bowing down toward the east before the sun.

² When I called* them, they went from my face.* They sacrificed to the Baals, and they sacrificed to idols.

¹¹ But they refused to listen, and turned* a stubborn shoulder and _⌊stopped their ears from listening_⌋.*

² Now early in the morning he came again to the temple courts.* And all the people were coming,* and he sat down and* began to teach* them.

⁶ He brought out the Asherah image from the temple of Yahweh outside of Jerusalem to the Wadi of the Kidron and burnt it _⌊there_⌋;* then he pulverized it to dust and threw its dust upon the tombs of the children of the people.

⁴ And he built altars in the house of Yahweh, of which Yahweh had said, "In Jerusalem my name shall be forever." ⁵ And he built altars to all the host of heaven in the two courtyards of the house of Yahweh. ⁶ And he himself burned his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom. And he practiced sorcery and divination, and he engaged in witchcraft and dealt with mediums and spiritists. And he did much evil in the eyes of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger. ⁷ And he placed the carved image of the idol that he had made in the house of God, of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son, "In this house and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel, I will put my name forever.

¹⁵ And he removed the foreign gods and the carved image from the house of Yahweh and all the altars which he built on the mountain of the house of Yahweh and in Jerusalem, and he threw them outside the city.

³⁰ For the people * of Judah have done evil in my eyes," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "They have set their abominations in the house that is called _⌊by my name_⌋,* to defile it.

¹¹ "For both prophet as well as priest are godless, even in my temple I have found their wickedness," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

⁵ And he said to me, "Son of man,* lift up now* your eyes _⌊toward the north_⌋."* And I lifted up my eyes _⌊toward the north_⌋,* and, look, there was to the north of the gate of the altar this image of jealousy at the entrance. ⁶ And he said to me, "Son of man,* "_⌊Do you see_⌋* what they are doing—great detestable things that the house of Israel is committing* here so as to drive me from* my sanctuary, and yet _⌊you will see again_⌋* greater* detestable things." ⁷ And he brought me to the doorway of the courtyard, and I saw, and look! A hole in the wall. ⁸ And he said to me, "Son of man,* dig now* through the wall." And I dug through the wall, and look! There was a doorway. ⁹ And he said to me, "Come and see the detestable things, the evil that they are doing* here. ¹⁰ And I came, and I saw, and look, all kinds of creatures* and detestable beasts;* and all of the idols of the house of Israel were carved on the wall _⌊all around_⌋.* ¹¹ And seventy men from the elders of the house of Israel, and Jaazaniah, the son of Shaphan, was standing in the midst of them, and they were standing _⌊before them_⌋.* Each one had his censer in his hand, and the fragrance of the cloud of the incense was going up. ¹² And he said to me, "Have you seen, son of man,* what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in the inner rooms of his idol, for they are saying, 'Yahweh is not seeing us; Yahweh has abandoned the land.'" ¹³ And he said to me, "Still _⌊you will see again_⌋* greater detestable things that they are doing." ¹⁴ And he brought me to the doorway of the gate of the house of Yahweh that is toward the north, and look! There were the women sitting weeping for Tammuz. ¹⁵ And he said to me, "Have you seen, son of man?* Still _⌊you will see again_⌋* greater detestable things than these." ¹⁶ And he brought me to the inner courtyard of the house of Yahweh, and look, at the doorway of the temple of Yahweh, between the portico and the altar, there were about twenty-five men with their backs to the temple of Yahweh and their faces toward the east, and they were bowing down toward the east before the sun.

²¹ And Moses said to Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you brought on them such a great sin?"

²¹ " 'And you shall not give _⌊any of_⌋* your offspring* in order to sacrifice them to Molech, nor* shall you profane the name of your God; I am Yahweh.

² "And to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* you shall say, 'If there is _⌊anyone_⌋* from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* or* from the alien who is dwelling in Israel, who gives _⌊any of_⌋* his offspring to Molech, he must surely be put to death; the people of the land must stone him with stones.* ³ And I myself will set my face against that man, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people, because he has given _⌊some of_⌋* his offspring to Molech, so that _⌊he makes my sanctuary unclean_⌋* and profanes* _⌊my holy name_⌋.* ⁴ And if the people of the land ever shut their eyes from* that man at his giving _⌊some of_⌋* his offspring to Molech, not putting him to death, ⁵ then* I myself will set my face against that man and against his clan, and I will cut him off and all those from the midst of their people who prostitute after Molech.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you one who makes his son or his daughter go through the fire, or _⌊one who practices divination_⌋,* or an interpreter of signs,* or an augur,* or sorcerer,

⁴ her first husband who sent her away is not allowed _⌊to take her again_⌋* to become a wife to him after she has _⌊been defiled_⌋,* for that is a detestable thing _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, and so you shall not mislead into sin the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.

³³ because he has forsaken me, and they bowed down to Ashtoreth, the god of the Sidonians, to Chemosh, the god of Moab, and to Molech, the god of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* They did not walk in my ways to do right in my eyes, my ordinances, or my judgments, as did David his father.

¹⁶ He will give up Israel because of the sin of Jeroboam which he sinned and which he caused Israel to sin."

²⁶ He did evil in the eyes of Yahweh, and he walked in the way of his father and in his sin that he caused Israel to commit.

³⁰ because of the sins of Jeroboam that he had committed and that he had caused Israel to commit and because of his anger with which he had provoked Yahweh the God of Israel.

¹⁹ This happened because of his sin which he committed by doing evil in the eyes of Yahweh, by going the way of Jeroboam and in his sin which he did by causing Israel to sin.

²² I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, _⌊because you made me angry_⌋* and have caused Israel to sin.'

³ But he did cling to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who caused Israel to sin, and he did not depart from it.

¹¹ "Because Manasseh the king of Judah committed these detestable things and did evil more than the Amorites did who were before him and caused even Judah to sin with his idols,

¹⁰ He defiled the Topheth which is in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom, _⌊to prevent_⌋* anyone causing his sons or his daughters to pass through the fire for Molech.

² But he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and also made molten idols for the Baals. ³ And he himself burned incense in the valley of Ben-Hinnom and burned his sons in the fire, according to the detestable practices of the nations whom Yahweh drove out before the Israelites.

⁶ And he himself burned his sons in the fire in the Valley of Ben-Hinnom. And he practiced sorcery and divination, and he engaged in witchcraft and dealt with mediums and spiritists. And he did much evil in the eyes of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger.

⁹ And Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do evil more than the nations that Yahweh destroyed before the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

³⁷ They even sacrificed their sons and daughters to the demons, ³⁸ and they poured out innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and so the land was defiled with the blood.*

⁵ who burn with lust among the oaks, under every leafy tree, who slaughter children in the valleys, under the clefts of the rocks?

³¹ And they built the high place of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I have not commanded, and it did not come into my mind.*

⁵ and they have built the high places of Baal, to burn their children in the fire, burnt offerings to Baal, which I commanded not, and I ordered not, and it did not come to my _⌊mind_⌋.* ⁶ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* look, days are about to come," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, _⌊but_⌋* the Valley of the Slaughter.

²⁰ 'And you took your sons and your daughters whom you had borne for me, and you sacrificed them to them to be eaten,* _⌊as if your whorings were not enough_⌋.* ²¹ And you slaughtered my children, and you gave them _⌊to be sacrificed to them_⌋.*

³⁷ For they committed adultery, and blood is on their hands, and they committed adultery with their idols, and even their children that they had borne for me—they sacrificed them as food!

²⁴ You have not bought me spice reed with money or* satisfied me with the fat of sacrifices. But you have burdened me with your sins; you have made me weary with your iniquities. ²⁵ I, I am the one who blots out your transgressions for my sake, and I will not remember your sins.

¹⁷ I was angry because of his sin of gain, and I struck him; I hid and I was angry, but* he walked apostate, in the ways* of his heart. ¹⁸ I have seen his ways, but* I will heal him; and I will lead him and give him and his mourners comfort as a recompense,

¹² And _⌊you have behaved badly_⌋* more than your ancestors,* and look, you are going each one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, without listening to me. ¹³ So I will throw you from this land to the land that you have not known, you or your ancestors,* and there you will serve other gods day and night, for I will not show you favor. ¹⁴ _⌊Therefore_⌋* look, days are coming,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and it will no longer be said, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* who led up the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from the land of Egypt," ¹⁵ _⌊but only_⌋* "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* who led up the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from the land of the north, and from all the lands where he had driven them," for I will bring them back to their ground that I gave to their ancestors.*

²⁸ _⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh: "Look, I am going to give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and he will capture it.

³¹ And you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe _⌊yourself_⌋* over* your iniquities and over your detestable things. ³² But not for your sake am I acting," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. "Let it be known to you, be ashamed, and be put to shame because of your ways, house of Israel.

¹⁴ Therefore, Look! I am going to allure her and bring her into the desert, and _⌊I will speak tenderly to her_⌋.*

²⁰ Now the law came in as a side issue, in order that the trespass could increase, but where sin increased, grace was present in greater abundance,

³ among whom also we all formerly lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the will* of the flesh and of the mind, and we were children of wrath* by nature, as also the rest of them were. ⁴ But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love with which he loved us, ⁵ and we being dead in trespasses, he made us alive together with Christ (by grace you are saved),

³ and Yahweh your God will restore your fortunes, and he will have compassion upon you, and _⌊he will again gather you together_⌋* from all the peoples where Yahweh your God scattered you there. ⁴ "Even if _⌊you are outcasts_⌋* at the end of the heavens, even from there Yahweh your God shall gather you, and from there _⌊he shall bring you back_⌋.* ⁵ And Yahweh your God will bring you to the land that your ancestors* had taken possession of,* and he will make you successful, and he will make you more numerous than your ancestors.* ⁶ "And Yahweh your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring to love Yahweh your God with all your heart and with all your inner self* _⌊so that you may live_⌋.*

⁴⁷ Save us, O Yahweh our God, and gather us from the nations, so that we may give thanks to your holy name and boast in your praise.

¹¹ And this shall happen on that day:
The Lord will again extend his hand a second time to acquire the remnant of his people that is left, from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the coastlands of the sea, ¹² and he will raise a signal for the nations. And he will gather the outcasts of Israel, and he will gather the scattered ones of Judah together from the four _⌊corners_⌋* of the earth. ¹³ And the jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and the enemies of Judah shall be cut off. Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not be an enemy of Ephraim. ¹⁴ But they shall _⌊swoop_⌋* upon the Philistine shoulder,* _⌊westward_⌋.* Together they shall plunder the sons of the east. Edom and Moab _⌊will be under their command_⌋,* and the sons of Ammon will be their subjugated people. ¹⁵ And Yahweh will divide* the tongue* of the sea of Egypt,* and he will wave his hand over the river* with his scorching wind; and he will strike it into seven streams, and he will _⌊make it passable by foot_⌋.* ¹⁶ So there shall be a highway from Assyria for the remnant of his people that remains, as there was for Israel _⌊when_⌋* it went up from the land of Egypt.

³ "Then I myself will gather together the remnant of my flock from all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their grazing place, and they will be fruitful, and they will become numerous.

⁶ In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell _⌊in safety_⌋,* and this is his name by which he will be called: 'Yahweh is our righteousness.'

⁸ but '_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* who led up, and who brought the offspring of the house of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where he had driven them.' Then they will live in their land."

¹⁴ And I will let myself be found by you,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and I will restore your fortunes,* and I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places to which I have driven you,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and I will bring you back to the place from which I deported you.'

¹⁰ Hear the word of Yahweh, O nations, and declare in the coastlands from afar, and say, "The scatterer of Israel will gather him, and he will keep him as a shepherd his flock.

⁷ And I will restore the fortunes* of Judah and the fortunes* of Israel, and I will rebuild them as in the beginning.

¹⁶ In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell _⌊safely_⌋,* and this is what they shall call it: "Yahweh is our righteousness." '

¹⁷ Therefore say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "And I will assemble you from the peoples, and I will gather you from the countries to which you were scattered among them, and I will give the land of Israel to you.

¹² just like the caring of a shepherd for his herd on* the day when he is in the midst of his scattered flock. Thus I will look after my flock, and I will deliver them from all the places _⌊to which they were scattered_⌋* on the day _⌊of storm and stress_⌋.* ¹³ And I will bring them out from the peoples, and I will gather them from the countries, and I will bring them to their soil, and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, in the valleys, and in all of the settlements of the land. ¹⁴ I will feed them in good pasture, and their pasture will be on the mountains of the heights of Israel; there they will lie down in good pasture, and on lush pasture they will feed on the mountains of Israel.

²⁵ And I will make them a covenant of peace, and I will put an end to wild animals* from the land, and they will dwell in the desert _⌊safely_⌋,* and they will sleep in the forest. ²⁶ And I will make them and the area all around my hill a blessing, and I will let the rain go down _⌊at its appointed time_⌋;* they will be rains of blessing. ²⁷ And the tree* of the field will give its fruit, and the land will give its produce, and they will be on their land _⌊safely_⌋,* and they will know that I am Yahweh when I break their yoke, and I will deliver them from the hand of the ones enslaving them. ²⁸ And they will not be any longer plunder to the nations, and the animals of the land will not eat them, and they will dwell _⌊in safety_⌋,* and there will not be anyone frightening them.

²⁴ " 'And I will take you from the nations, and I will gather you from all of the lands, and I will bring you to your land.

²¹ And speak to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am taking the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from among _⌊the nations to which they went_⌋,* and I will gather them from _⌊everywhere_⌋,* and I will bring them to their own soil. ²² And I will make them into one nation in the land on the mountains of Israel, and _⌊they will all have one king as their king_⌋,* and they* will not again be two nations and will not again divide into two kingdoms again. ²³ And they will not defile themselves again with their idols and with vile idols and with all of their transgressions, and I will save them from all of their apostasy _⌊by which they sinned_⌋,* and I will cleanse them and they will be for me as a people and I, I will be for them as God. ²⁴ " '"And my servant David will be king over them, and one shepherd will be for all of them, and in my regulations they will go, and my statutes they will observe, and they will do them. ²⁵ And they will dwell on the land that I gave to my servant, to Jacob, _⌊in which your ancestors dwelled_⌋,* and they will dwell on it, they and their children and the children of their children _⌊forever_⌋,* and my servant David will be a leader for them _⌊forever_⌋.*

²⁵ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and I will have compassion on all of the house of Israel, and I will be jealous* for _⌊my holy name_⌋.* ²⁶ And they will forget their disgrace and all of their infidelity that they displayed against me when they dwelt on their soil _⌊in safety_⌋* _⌊with nobody making them afraid_⌋.* ²⁷ When I restore them from the nations and I gather them from the countries of their enemies, then I will show myself holy through them before the eyes of many nations. ²⁸ And they will know that I am Yahweh their God, because of when I deported them into the nations, and I reassembled them to their soil, and _⌊I will not let any of them remain there any longer_⌋.* ²⁹ And I will not hide my face again from them when I pour out my Spirit over* the house of Israel," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

¹¹ Then the children of Judah and Israel will be gathered together, and they will appoint for themselves one head; and _⌊they will take possession of_⌋* the land, for great is the day of Jezreel.*

⁵ Afterward the children of Israel will return and seek Yahweh their God and David their king. They will come in fear to Yahweh and to his goodness at the end of days.

²⁰ But Judah will be inhabited forever, and Jerusalem _⌊for all generations_⌋.*

¹⁷ But on Mount Zion there will be an escape, and it will be holy, and the house of Jacob will take possession of their dispossessors. ¹⁸ And the house of Jacob will be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau stubble; and they will set them on fire and will consume them. And there will not be a survivor for the house of Esau," for Yahweh has spoken. ¹⁹ Those of the Negev will take possession of the mountain of Esau, and those of the Shephelah will possess the land of the Philistines, and they shall take possession of the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria, and Benjamin will take possession of Gilead. ²⁰ And the exiles* of this army of the people of Israel will possess Canaan up to Zarephath, and the exiles* of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will take possession of the cities of the Negev. ²¹ And those who have been saved will go up on Mount Zion to rule the mountain of Esau. And the kingdom _⌊will belong to_⌋* Yahweh.

²⁰ At that time I will bring you in; at the time of my gathering you together. For I will make you _⌊renowned_⌋* and praised among all the nations of the earth when I restore your fortunes before your eyes," says Yahweh.

⁴ And he said to him, "Run, say to that young man, 'Jerusalem shall be inhabited _⌊like villages without walls_⌋* because of the multitude of people and animals in its midst. ⁵ And I will be for it a wall of fire all around,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'and I will be the glory in its midst.'"

¹¹ And they* will dwell in it, and _⌊there will be no more ban imposed_⌋,* and Jerusalem will dwell in security.

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you.

¹⁷ Yahweh you have declared _⌊today_⌋* to be for you as your God, and to go* in his ways and to observe his rules and his commandments and his regulations and to listen to his voice. ¹⁸ And Yahweh has declared you _⌊today_⌋* to be for him as a people, a treasured possession, as he _⌊promised_⌋* to you, and that you are to observe all his commandments, ¹⁹ _⌊and that he then will set you_⌋* high above all the nations that he has made for his praise and _⌊for fame_⌋* and for honor and _⌊for you to be a holy people_⌋* to Yahweh your God, as he _⌊promised_⌋."*

¹⁵ Blessed are the people who have it thus. Blessed are the people whose God is Yahweh.

⁷ And I will give to them a heart to know me, that I am Yahweh, and _⌊they will be my people_⌋,* and _⌊I will be their God_⌋,* for they will return to me with the whole of their heart.

²² 'And you will be to me a people, and I will be to you God.'"

¹ "At that time," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh,
"I will be the God of all the clans* of Israel, and they will be to me a people."

³³ "But this is the covenant that I will _⌊make_⌋* with the house of Israel after those days," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh: "I will put my law in their inward parts and on their hearts* I will write it, and I will be to them God, and they themselves will be to me people.

¹⁹ And I will give to them one heart, and a new spirit I will give* in their inner parts. And I will remove their* heart of stone from their body, and I will give to them a heart of flesh, ²⁰ so that they may walk in my statutes, and they will keep my regulations, and they will do them, and they will be to me a people, and I myself will be to them as God.

²⁸ And you will dwell in the land that I gave to your ancestors,* and you will be to me as a people, and I will be to you as* God.

²⁷ And my tabernacle will be with them, and I will be for them as God, and they will be to me as a nation.

²² "And the house of Israel will know that I am Yahweh their God from that day and beyond,

²⁸ And they will know that I am Yahweh their God, because of when I deported them into the nations, and I reassembled them to their soil, and _⌊I will not let any of them remain there any longer_⌋.*

⁹ And I will bring the remaining third into the fire, and I will refine them like one refines silver, and I will test them like one tests gold. They* will call my name, and I will answer them.* I will say, 'They* are my people,' and they* will say, 'Yahweh is my God.'"

¹⁰ For this is the covenant that I will decree with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I am putting my laws in their minds and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be _⌊their_⌋* God and they will be _⌊my_⌋* people.

¹⁶ But now they aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

⁷ The one who conquers will inherit these things, and I will be _⌊his God_⌋* and he will be _⌊my son_⌋*.

¹⁹ For I have chosen* him, that he will command his children and his household after him that they will keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring upon Abraham that which he said to him."

¹² And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the boy; do not do anything to him. For now I know that you are _⌊one who fears_⌋* God, since you have not withheld your son, your only child, from me."

²⁹ _⌊If only_⌋* _⌊they had such a mind_⌋';* that is, to fear me and to keep all my commandments _⌊at all times_⌋,* so that _⌊it will go well_⌋* for them and for their children _⌊forever_⌋.*

¹⁸ "And you shall put these, my words, on your heart and on your inner self,* and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be as an emblem between your eyes. ¹⁹ And you shall teach them to your children* by talking about them when you sit in your house and when you travel on the road and when you lie down and when you get up. ²⁰ And you shall write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates, ²¹ so that they may multiply your days and the days of your children on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors* to give it to them _⌊as long as heaven endures over the earth_⌋.*

¹² The hand of God was also upon Judah, to give them one heart to obey the command of the king and the princes concerning the word of Yahweh.

¹ Praise Yah!* Blessed is the man who fears Yahweh; he takes great delight in his commands.

¹³ He will bless those who fear Yahweh, the small with the great. ¹⁴ May Yahweh give you increase, you and your children. ¹⁵ May you be blessed by Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.

⁶ and that you may see your children's children. May peace be upon Israel.

²⁶ In the fear of Yahweh, there is confidence of strength, and for his children, there will be refuge. ²⁷ The fear of Yahweh is a fountain of life, in order to turn from the snares of death.

¹⁷ May your heart* not envy the sinners, but live in fear of Yahweh _⌊all day_⌋.*

⁸ And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called the way of holiness. The unclean shall not travel through it, but* it is for them, he who walks on the way; and fools shall not wander about.

⁸ The voices* of your watchmen! They lift up their voices;* together they sing for joy; for they _⌊clearly_⌋* see Yahweh's return to Zion.

¹⁶ Thus says Yahweh: "Stand at the roads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the way of the good is, and walk in it, and find rest for your inner selves.* But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'*

⁴⁰ And I will _⌊make_⌋* with them _⌊an everlasting covenant_⌋* that I will not turn away from them, my doing good to them, and my reverence I will put in their hearts* so that they will not turn aside from me.

²⁶ And I will give a new heart to you, and a new spirit I will give* into your inner parts, and I will remove the* heart of stone from your flesh, and I will give to you a heart of flesh.

²² And I will make them into one nation in the land on the mountains of Israel, and _⌊they will all have one king as their king_⌋,* and they* will not again be two nations and will not again divide into two kingdoms again.

²⁵ And they will dwell on the land that I gave to my servant, to Jacob, _⌊in which your ancestors dwelled_⌋,* and they will dwell on it, they and their children and the children of their children _⌊forever_⌋,* and my servant David will be a leader for them _⌊forever_⌋.*

⁶ Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

²¹ that they all may be one, just as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, that they also may be in us, in order that the world may believe that you sent me.

³⁹ For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all those who are far away, as many as the Lord our God calls to himself."

²⁶ God, after he* had raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning each of you back from your wickedness!"

³² Now the group of those who believed were one heart and soul, and no one said anything of what belonged to him was his own, but all things were theirs in common.

³¹ Then the church throughout all of Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being strengthened. And living in the fear of the Lord and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it was increasing in numbers.*

³³ this promise* God has fulfilled to our children* by* raising Jesus, as it is also written in the second psalm,
'You are my Son; today I have fathered you.'*

¹⁶ Now if the first fruits are holy, so also is the whole batch of dough, and if the root is holy, so also are the branches.

¹⁴ For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by his wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the brother, since otherwise your children are unclean, but now they are holy.

¹¹ Finally, brothers, rejoice, be restored, be encouraged, _⌊be in agreement_⌋*, be at peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.

¹ Therefore, if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, ² complete my joy, so that _⌊you are in agreement_⌋*, having the same love, united in spirit, _⌊having one purpose_⌋*.

²⁰ by the new and living way which he inaugurated for us through the curtain, that is, his flesh,

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you. ⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God." ⁹ And God said to Abraham, "Now as for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you, throughout their generations. ¹⁰ This is my covenant which you shall keep, between me and you, and also with* your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. ¹¹ And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. ¹² And _⌊at eight days of age_⌋* you shall yourselves circumcise every male belonging to your generations and _⌊the servant born in your house and the one bought from any foreigner_⌋* who is not from your offspring. ¹³ _⌊You must certainly circumcise_⌋* _⌊the servant born in your house and the one bought from any foreigner_⌋.* And my covenant shall be with your flesh as an everlasting covenant.

⁴ Like the light of the morning when the sun rises, shining with no clouds, bringing vegetation from the earth apart from rain.'*

⁵ and the earth is defiled beneath its inhabitants. For they have transgressed laws; they have passed by statutes;* they have broken the everlasting covenant.

³ Extend your ear, and come to me! Listen so that* your soul may live, and I will _⌊make_⌋* an everlasting covenant with* you, the enduring proofs of _⌊the mercies shown to_⌋* David.

⁸ For I, Yahweh, love justice, hate robbery and* injustice, and I will _⌊faithfully_⌋* give their reward, and I will _⌊make_⌋* an everlasting covenant _⌊with_⌋* them.

³¹ Look, the days are coming," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and I will _⌊make_⌋* a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, ³² not like the covenant that I _⌊made_⌋* with their ancestors* on the day of my grasping them* by their hand, bringing them out from the land of Egypt, my covenant that they themselves broke, though I myself was a master over them," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. ³³ "But this is the covenant that I will _⌊make_⌋* with the house of Israel after those days," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh: "I will put my law in their inward parts and on their hearts* I will write it, and I will be to them God, and they themselves will be to me people.

⁵ They will ask the way to Zion, turning their faces there. They will come and join themselves to Yahweh by _⌊an everlasting covenant_⌋* that will not be forgotten.

²⁹ And I will not hide my face again from them when I pour out my Spirit over* the house of Israel," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

⁷² to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, ⁷³ the oath that he swore to Abraham our father, to grant us ⁷⁴ that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, could serve him without fear ⁷⁵ in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

²⁷ My sheep listen to my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸ And I give them eternal life, and they will never perish _⌊forever_⌋,* and no one will seize them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them* to me, is greater than all, and no one can seize them* from the Father's hand. ³⁰ The Father and I are one."

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose, ²⁹ because those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among many brothers. ³⁰ And those whom he predestined, these he also called, and those whom he called, these he also justified, and those whom he justified, these he also glorified. ³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ³² Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things? ³³ Who will bring charges against God's elect? God is the one who justifies. ³⁴ Who is the one who condemns? Christ* is the one who died, and more than that, who was raised, who is also at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. ³⁵ Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction or distress or persecution or hunger or lack of sufficient clothing or danger or the sword? ³⁶ Just as it is written,
"On account of you we are being put to death the whole day long; we are considered as sheep for slaughter."* ³⁷ No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the one who loved us. ³⁸ For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹⁴ in order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. ¹⁵ Brothers, I am speaking according to a human perspective. Nevertheless, when* the covenant of a man has been ratified, no one declares it invalid or adds additional provisions to it. ¹⁶ Now to Abraham and to his descendant the promises were spoken. It does not say, "and to descendants," as concerning many, but as concerning one, "and to your descendant,"* who is Christ. ¹⁷ Now I am saying this: the law, that came after four hundred and thirty years, does not revoke a covenant previously ratified by God, in order to nullify the promise.

¹ Therefore let us fear, while there* remains a promise of entering into his rest, that none of you appear to fall short of it.

¹³ For when* God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater to swear by, he swore by himself, ¹⁴ saying,
"Surely _⌊I will greatly bless_⌋* you, and _⌊I will greatly multiply_⌋* you." ¹⁵ And so, by* persevering, he obtained the promise. ¹⁶ For people swear by what is greater than themselves, and the oath for confirmation is the end of all dispute for them. ¹⁷ In the same way God, because he* wanted to show even more to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of his resolve, guaranteed it with an oath, ¹⁸ in order that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge may have powerful encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us,
