¹ When Jacob realized that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?" ² Then he said, "Look, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us there that we may live and not die." ³ And the ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt. ⁴ But Jacob did not send Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, for _⌊he feared harm would come to him_⌋.* ⁵ Then the sons of Israel went to buy grain amid those other people who went as well, for there was famine in the land of Canaan. ⁶ Now Joseph was the governor over the land. He was the one who sold food to all the people of the land. And the brothers of Joseph came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground. ⁷ And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger to them. And he spoke with them harshly and said to them, "From where have you come?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food." ⁸ And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. ⁹ And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed concerning them, and he said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!" ¹⁰ And they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. ¹¹ We all are sons of one man. We are honest men. We, your servants, are not spies." ¹² Then he said to them, "No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land." ¹³ Then they said, "We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, but behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more." ¹⁴ But Joseph said to them, "It is what I said to you—you are spies. ¹⁵ By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh you will not go out from here unless your youngest brother comes here. ¹⁶ Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, but you will be kept in prison so that your words might be tested to see if there is truth with you. And if not, by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies." ¹⁷ Then he gathered them into the prison for three days. ¹⁸ On the third day Joseph said to them, "Do this and you will live; I fear God. ¹⁹ If you are honest, let one of your brothers be kept in prison _⌊where you are now being kept_⌋,* but the rest of you go, carry grain for the famine for your households. ²⁰ You must bring your youngest brother to me, and then your words will be confirmed and you will not die." And they did so. ²¹ Then each said to his brother, "Surely we are guilty on account of our brother when we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded for mercy to us and we would not listen. Therefore this trouble has come to us." ²² Then Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not say to you, do not sin against the boy? But you did not listen, and now, behold, his blood has been sought." ²³ Now they did not know that Joseph understood, for the interpreter was between them. ²⁴ And he turned away from them and wept. Then he returned to them and spoke to them, and took Simeon from them and tied him up in front of them. ²⁵ Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to return their money to each sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. Thus he did for them. ²⁶ Then they loaded their grain upon their donkeys and went away from there. ²⁷ And one of them later opened his sack to give fodder to his donkey at the lodging place and saw his money—behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. ²⁸ And he said to his brothers, "My money was returned and moreover, behold, it is in my sack!" Then _⌊their hearts failed them_⌋* and each of them trembled and said, "What is this God has done to us?" ²⁹ And when they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan they told him everything that had happened to them, saying, ³⁰ "The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly to us and treated us as if we were spying out the land. ³¹ But we said to him, 'We are honest; we are not spies. ³² We are twelve brothers, the sons of our father. One is no more and the youngest is with our father now in the land of Canaan.' ³³ Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest. Leave one brother with me, and take food for the famine in your households and go. ³⁴ And bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies but you are honest. And I will give your brother back to you, and you will trade in the land.'" ³⁵ And it happened that when they emptied their sacks, behold, each one's pouch of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw the pouches of their money, they were greatly distressed. ³⁶ And Jacob their father said to them, "You have bereaved me—Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and Benjamin you would take! All of this is against me! ³⁷ Then Reuben said to his father, "You may kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hand and I myself will return him to you." ³⁸ But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone remains. If harm meets him on the journey that you would take, you would bring down my gray head in sorrow to Sheol."

⁵⁴ And the seven years of famine began to come as Joseph had said. And there was famine in all of the countries, but in the land of Egypt there was food.

⁵⁷ And every land came to Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, for the famine was severe in every land.

² Then he said, "Look, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us there that we may live and not die."

¹⁹ And the foremen of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* saw they were in trouble _⌊with the saying_⌋,* "You will not reduce from your bricks _⌊for each day_⌋* on its day."

¹⁸ And all the people were seeing the thunder and the lightning and the sound of the ram's horn and the mountain smoking, and the people saw, and they trembled, and they stood at a distance.

¹⁰ And Yahweh said to Joshua, "Stand up! _⌊Why_⌋* have you fallen on your face?

³ Then he became afraid,* got up, and _⌊fled for his life_⌋.* He came to Beersheba which belongs to Judah, and he left his servant there.

³ It happened at the end of seven years that the woman returned from the land of the Philistines and went out to appeal to the king for her household and for her _⌊properties_⌋.* ⁴ Now the king was speaking to Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, "Please tell me all of the great things which Elisha has done."

⁴ Arise, for it is your task and we are with you. Be strong and do it."

¹⁴ Why are we sitting? Gather, and let us go into the fortified cities, and let us perish there, for Yahweh our God has caused us to perish, and has provided drink for us, water of poison, because we have sinned against Yahweh.

¹³ And when Ephraim saw his illness, and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria, he sent to the great king.* But he was unable to cure you and heal your wound.

¹² So when* Jacob heard there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

⁷ But these, when they* saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcision, just as Peter to the circumcision

² And it happened that as they finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt their father said to them, "Return and buy a little food for us."

⁴ _⌊If you will send_⌋* our brother with us, we will go down and buy food for you,

⁸ Then Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the boy with me, and let us arise and go, so that we will live and not die—you, we, and our children.

⁹ Hurry, and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me and do not delay.

¹⁷ I will not die but live, and tell of the works of Yah.*

¹ In those days, Hezekiah became sick to death, and Isaiah son of Amoz, the prophet, came to him and said to him, "Thus says Yahweh: 'Order your house, for you are about to die, and you shall not recover.'"

⁴ But he answered and* said, "It is written, 'Man will not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God."*

⁵ Then the sons of Israel went to buy grain amid those other people who went as well, for there was famine in the land of Canaan.

¹³ Then they said, "We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, but behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no more."

²² And Yahweh God said, "Look—the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil. _⌊What if_⌋* he stretches out his hand and takes also from the tree of life and eats, and lives forever?"

⁴ And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top reaches to the heavens. And let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

¹ And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked. And behold, Esau was coming and four hundred men were with him. And he* divided the children among Leah and among Rachel, and among the two of his female servants. ² And he put the female slaves and their children first, then Leah and her children next, then Rachel with Joseph last.

¹⁶ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And _⌊when they were still some distance_⌋* from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. And she had hard labor. ¹⁷ And _⌊when her labor was the most difficult_⌋* the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid _⌊for you have another son_⌋."* ¹⁸ And it happened that when her life was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-Oni.* But his father called him Benjamin.* ¹⁹ And Rachel died and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

³⁸ But he said, "My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead and he alone remains. If harm meets him on the journey that you would take, you would bring down my gray head in sorrow to Sheol."

¹⁴ And may El-Shaddai* grant you compassion before the man that he may release your other brother to you and Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved."

²⁹ Then he lifted up his eyes and saw Benjamin his brother, the son of his mother, and said, "Is this your youngest brother of whom you told me?" And he continued,* "God be gracious to you, my son."

²⁰ And we said to my lord, 'We have an aged father, and a younger brother, the child of his old age, and his brother died, and he alone remains from his mother, and his father loves him.' ²¹ Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me that I may set my eyes upon him.' ²² Then we said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; if he should leave his father, then he* would die.'

²⁷ Then your servant, my father, said to us, 'You yourselves know that my wife bore two sons to me. ²⁸ One went out from me, and I said, "Surely he must have been torn to pieces," and I have never seen him since. ²⁹ And if you take this one also from me, and he encounters harm, you will bring down my gray head in sorrow to Sheol.' ³⁰ So now, when I come to your servant, my father, and the boy is not with us—now his life is bound up with his life— ³¹ it shall happen that when he sees that the boy is gone, he will die. And your servants will bring down the gray head of your servant, our father, to Sheol with sorrow. ³² For your servant is pledged as surety for the boy by my father, saying, If I do not bring him to you, then I shall be culpable to my father forever. ³³ So then, please let your servant remain in place of the boy as a slave to my lord, and let the boy go up with his brothers. ³⁴ For how can I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? _⌊I do not want to see_⌋* the misery which will find my father."

¹⁰ And there was a famine in the land. And Abram went down to Egypt to dwell as an alien there, for the famine was severe in the land.

¹ And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine which was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

¹¹ And a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan and great affliction, and our fathers could not find food.

²⁸ And one of them _⌊named_⌋* Agabus stood up and* indicated by the Spirit that a great famine was about to come over the whole inhabited earth (which took place in the time of Claudius).

² And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men were standing near* him. And he saw them and ran from the doorway of the tent to meet them. And he bowed down to the ground.

¹ And the two angels came to Sodom in the evening. And Lot was sitting in the gateway of Sodom. Then Lot saw them and stood up to meet them. And he bowed down with his face to the ground.

⁷ Now behold, we were binding sheaves in the midst of the field and, behold, my sheaf stood up and it remained standing. Then behold, your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to my sheaf." ⁸ Then his brothers said to him, "Will you really rule over us?" And _⌊they hated him even more_⌋* on account of his dream and because of his words. ⁹ Then he dreamed yet another dream and told it to his brothers. And he said, "Behold, I dreamed a dream again, and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." ¹⁰ And he told it to his father and to his brothers. And his father rebuked him and said to him, "What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down to the ground to you?"

⁴⁰ You shall be over my house, and to your word* all my people shall submit. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you." ⁴¹ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt."

⁵⁵ And when all the land of Egypt was hungry the people cried out to Pharaoh for food. And Pharaoh said to all the land of Egypt, "Go to Joseph; what he says to you, you must do." ⁵⁶ And the famine was over the whole land, and Joseph opened all the storehouses* and sold food to the Egyptians. And the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.

¹⁴ And Judah and his brothers came to the house of Joseph—now he was still there—they fell before him to the ground.

⁸ So now, you yourselves did not send me here, but God put me here as father to Pharaoh and as master of all his household, and a ruler over all the land of Egypt.

²⁶ And they spoke to him, saying, "Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt." And his heart _⌊went numb_⌋,* because he did not believe him.

¹⁶ Then he called for a famine upon the land; he broke every _⌊supply_⌋* of bread. ¹⁷ He sent a man on ahead of them; Joseph was sold as a slave. ¹⁸ They clamped* his feet in fetters.* His neck* went into irons.* ¹⁹ Until the time his word came about, the word of Yahweh tested* him. ²⁰ The king sent and he freed him; the ruler of the peoples sent and let him loose. ²¹ He made him lord of his house and ruler of all his possessions,

¹⁰ and rescued him from all his afflictions and granted him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt. And he appointed him ruler over Egypt and all* his household.

⁹ Behold, I am causing those of the synagogue of Satan, the ones who call themselves Jews and are not, but are lying—behold, I will make them _⌊come_⌋* and kneel down before your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

⁹ And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed concerning them, and he said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!" ¹⁰ And they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. ¹¹ We all are sons of one man. We are honest men. We, your servants, are not spies." ¹² Then he said to them, "No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land."

¹⁴ But Joseph said to them, "It is what I said to you—you are spies. ¹⁵ By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh you will not go out from here unless your youngest brother comes here. ¹⁶ Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, but you will be kept in prison so that your words might be tested to see if there is truth with you. And if not, by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies." ¹⁷ Then he gathered them into the prison for three days.

²³ But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came up and* asked him, saying, "Send her away, because she is crying out after us!" ²⁴ But he answered and* said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." ²⁵ But she came and* knelt down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!" ²⁶ And he answered and* said, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it* to the dogs!"

² These are the generations* of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers. Now he was a helper with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, the wives of his father. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to his father.

¹⁶ but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

¹⁴ When she* had said these things, she turned _⌊around_⌋* and saw Jesus standing there, and she did not know that it was Jesus.

⁴ Now when it* was already early morning, Jesus stood on the beach. However, the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

⁵ And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers. And _⌊they hated him even more_⌋.* ⁶ And he said to them, "Listen now to this dream that I dreamed. ⁷ Now behold, we were binding sheaves in the midst of the field and, behold, my sheaf stood up and it remained standing. ³⁵ And Yahweh afflicted the people because they had made the bull calf that Aaron had made.

² "Send for yourself men, and let them explore the land of Canaan, which I am about to give to the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* _⌊from each tribe of his father send one man_⌋,* everyone a leader among them."

¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua. ¹⁷ Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and he said to them, "Go up like this to the Negev,* and go up into the hill country, ¹⁸ and you will see what the land is like and if the people who inhabit it are strong or weak, or whether they are few or many, ¹⁹ and whether the land that they are inhabiting is good or bad, and whether the cities they are inhabiting are camps or fortifications, ²⁰ and whether the land is fertile or lean, and whether there are trees on it or not. You will show yourself courageous, and you will take some of the fruit of the land." It was the time of first ripe grapes.

¹ Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove* as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and _⌊spent the night_⌋* there.

²³ So the young men who were spies went and brought Rahab and her father and mother, her brothers, and all who were with her. And they brought all her family out and set them outside the camp of Israel.

²⁴ And when the spies saw a man leaving the city,* they said to him, "Please show us the entrance of the city, and we will deal kindly* with you."

⁴ David sent spies, and he learned that Saul had come _⌊for certain_⌋.*

²⁰ And they watched him* closely and* sent spies who pretended they were upright, in order that they could catch him in a statement, so that they could hand him over to the authority and the jurisdiction of the governor.

³¹ By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she* welcomed the spies in peace.

²⁹ Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you; Be lord of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. Cursed be those cursing you, and blessed be those blessing you."

³⁷ Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, "Behold, I have made him lord over you and I have given him all his brothers as servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. Now what can I do for you, my son?"

⁸ Then his brothers said to him, "Will you really rule over us?" And _⌊they hated him even more_⌋* on account of his dream and because of his words.

⁹ Whoever is found with it from among your servants shall die. And moreover, we will become slaves to my lord."

¹⁷ Then Saul recognized David's voice and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" And David said, "It is my voice, my lord the king."

⁷ It happened that Obadiah was on the way, and suddenly Elijah was there to meet him. When he recognized him, he fell on his face and said, "Is this you, my lord Elijah?"

¹⁹ If you are honest, let one of your brothers be kept in prison _⌊where you are now being kept_⌋,* but the rest of you go, carry grain for the famine for your households.

³³ Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest. ¹⁸ The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory. But the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him—this one is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

⁴ but commending ourselves as servants of God in every way, in much endurance, in afflictions, in distresses, in difficulties,

³² Then Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, "Because Yahweh has noticed my misery, that I am unloved. Now my husband will love me." ³³ And she conceived again and gave birth to a son. And she said, "It is because Yahweh has heard that I am unloved that he gave me this son also." And she called his name Simeon. ³⁴ And she conceived again and gave birth to a son. Then she said, "Now this time my husband will be joined to me, for I have borne him three sons." Therefore, she called his name Levi. ³⁵ And she conceived again and gave birth to a son. And she said, "This time I will praise Yahweh." Therefore she called his name Judah. And she ceased bearing children.

⁶ Then Rachel said, "God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son." Therefore she called his name Dan. ⁷ And Bilhah, Rachel's servant, conceived again and bore a second son to Jacob. ⁸ And Rachel said, "I have struggled a mighty struggle with my sister and have prevailed." And she called his name Naphtali. ⁹ When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took Zilpah her female servant and gave her to Jacob as a wife. ¹⁰ And Zilpah, the female slave of Leah, bore a son to Jacob. ¹¹ Then Leah said, "Good fortune!" And she called his name Gad. ¹² And Zilpah, Leah's female servant, bore a second son to Jacob. ¹³ Then Leah said, "How happy am I! For women have called me happy." So she called his name Asher. ¹⁴ And in the days of the wheat harvest, Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and he brought them to Leah his mother. And Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes." ¹⁵ And she said to her, "Is your taking my husband such a small thing that you will also take the mandrakes of my son?" Then Rachel said, "Then he may sleep with you tonight in exchange for your son's mandrakes." ¹⁶ When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him. And she said, "Come in to me, for _⌊I have hired_⌋* you with my son's mandrakes." And he slept with her that night. ¹⁷ And God listened to Leah and she conceived and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob. ¹⁸ Then Leah said, "God has given me my wage since I gave my servant girl to my husband." And she called his name Issachar. ¹⁹ And Leah conceived again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob. ²⁰ And Leah said, "God has endowed me with a good gift. This time my husband will acknowledge me, because I bore him six sons." And she called his name Zebulun. ²¹ And afterward she gave birth to a daughter. And she called her name Dinah. ²² Then God remembered Rachel and listened to her, and God opened her womb. ²³ And she conceived and gave birth to a son. And she said, "God has taken away my disgrace." ²⁴ And she called his name Joseph, saying, "Yahweh has added to me another son."

¹⁶ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And _⌊when they were still some distance_⌋* from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. And Israel heard about it. ²³ The sons of Leah: The firstborn of Jacob was Reuben. Then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun. ²⁴ The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁵ The sons of Bilhah, the female servant of Rachel: Dan and Naphtali. ²⁶ The sons of Zilpah, the female servant of Leah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.

³⁰ And he returned to his brothers and said, "The boy _⌊is gone_⌋!* Now I, _⌊what can I do_⌋?"*

¹¹ We all are sons of one man. We are honest men. We, your servants, are not spies."

³² We are twelve brothers, the sons of our father. One is no more and the youngest is with our father now in the land of Canaan.'

³⁶ And Jacob their father said to them, "You have bereaved me—Joseph is no more and Simeon is no more, and Benjamin you would take! All of this is against me!

⁷ And they said, "The man asked explicitly about us and about our family, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Do you have a brother?' And we answered him according to these words. How could we know that he would say, 'Bring down your brother'?"

²⁰ And we said to my lord, 'We have an aged father, and a younger brother, the child of his old age, and his brother died, and he alone remains from his mother, and his father loves him.'

²⁸ One went out from me, and I said, "Surely he must have been torn to pieces," and I have never seen him since.

⁸ Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons. Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob ⁹ and the sons of Reuben: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ¹⁰ The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman. ¹¹ The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. ¹² The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). And the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ¹³ The sons of Issachar: Tolah, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron. ¹⁴ The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. ¹⁵ These are the sons of Leah that she bore to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, and Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters were thirty-three persons in all. ¹⁶ The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. ¹⁷ The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah, and their sister Serah. And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malkiel. ¹⁸ There are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob—sixteen persons. ¹⁹ The sons of Rachel, Jacob's wife: Joseph and Benjamin. ²⁰ And Ephraim and Manasseh, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On bore to him, were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. ²¹ The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. ²² These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all. ²³ The sons of Dan: Hushim. ²⁴ The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. ²⁵ These are the sons of Bilhah whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and she bore these to Jacob—seven persons in all. ²⁶ All the persons belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt _⌊who were his descendants_⌋,* not including the wives of the sons of Jacob were sixty-six persons in all. ²⁷ And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two persons. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came to Egypt were seventy.

² Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; ³ Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; ⁴ Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. ⁵ And _⌊all those who descended from Jacob_⌋* were seventy individuals,* and Joseph was in Egypt.

¹ Yahweh spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, in the tent of assembly, on the first of the month, in the second year _⌊after they came out_⌋* of the land of Egypt, saying, ² "_⌊Take a census of_⌋* the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* according to their clans and _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, every male individually ³ from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone in Israel who is able to go to war. You and Aaron must muster them* for their wars. ⁴ A man from each tribe will be with you, each man the head of _⌊his family_⌋.* ⁵ And these are the names of the men who will _⌊assist you_⌋:* from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; ⁶ from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; ⁷ from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; ⁸ from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; ⁹ from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. ¹⁰ From the descendants of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. ¹¹ From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; ¹² from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; ¹³ from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; ¹⁴ from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; ¹⁵ and from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." ¹⁶ These are the ones summoned from the community, the leaders of their ancestors'* tribes; they are the heads of Israel's clans. ¹⁷ So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, ¹⁸ and they summoned the entire community on the first day of the second month. And they registered themselves among their clans according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above individually, ¹⁹ just as Yahweh commanded Moses. And he counted them in the desert of Sinai. ²⁰ The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, every male individually from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ²¹ those who were counted from the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred. ²² From the descendants of Simeon, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* those who were counted according to the number of their names, every individual male from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ²³ those who were counted from the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. ²⁴ From the descendants of Gad, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ²⁵ those who were counted from the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. ²⁶ From the descendants of Judah, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ²⁷ those who were counted from the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred. ²⁸ From the descendants of Issachar, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ²⁹ those who were counted from the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred. ³⁰ From the descendants of Zebulun, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ³¹ those who were counted from the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. ³² From the descendants of Joseph: from the descendants of Ephraim, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ³³ those who were counted from the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred. ³⁴ From the descendants of Manasseh, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ³⁵ those who were counted from the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred. ³⁶ From the descendants of Benjamin, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ³⁷ those who were counted from the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred. ³⁸ From the descendants of Dan, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ³⁹ those who were counted from the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. ⁴⁰ From the descendants of Asher, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ⁴¹ those who were counted from the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred. ⁴² From the descendants of Naphtali, their genealogies according to their clans, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* according to the number of names, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone who is able to go to war: ⁴³ those who were counted from the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred. ⁴⁴ These are the ones counted whom Moses and Aaron mustered,* with the twelve leaders of Israel, each one from _⌊his family_⌋.* ⁴⁵ So all those who were counted from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* according to _⌊their families_⌋,* from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, everyone in Israel who is able to go to war. ⁴⁶ All of the ones counted were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty. ⁴⁷ The Levites from their ancestors'* tribe were not mustered* in their midst. ⁴⁸ And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ⁴⁹ "You will not muster* the tribe of Levi, and you will not _⌊take a census of_⌋* them in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁵⁰ You will _⌊appoint_⌋* them over the tabernacle of the testimony,* over all its vessels, and over all that belongs to it. They will carry the tabernacle and all its vessels, and they will care for it; and they will camp around the tabernacle. ⁵¹ And when the tabernacle is set out, the Levites will _⌊take it down_⌋,* and when encamping the tabernacle the Levites will set it up; the stranger* that approaches it will be put to death. ⁵² The _⌊Israelites_⌋* will encamp, each in their own camp, and each by their* own banner according to their divisions. ⁵³ But the Levites will encamp around the tabernacle of the testimony,* and there will not be wrath on the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* and the Levites will keep the requirements of the tabernacle of the testimony."* ⁵⁴ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did thus; they did everything that Yahweh commanded Moses.

¹ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ² "Make yourself two silver trumpets; make them of hammered-work. _⌊You will use them_⌋* for calling the community and for breaking the camp. ³ You will blow them, and all the community will assemble to the doorway of the tent of assembly. ⁴ But if they blow only one, the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, will assemble to you. ⁵ When you will blow a blast, the camps that are camping on the east will set out; ⁶ when you blow a second blast, the camps that are camping on the south will set out; they will blow a blast for their journeys. ⁷ But when summoning the assembly, you will blow, but you will not signal with a loud noise. ⁸ The sons of Aaron, the priests, will blow on the trumpets; this will be an eternal decree for your generations. ⁹ If you go to war in your land against the enemy who attacks you, you will signal with a loud noise on the trumpets. You will be remembered _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh your God, and you will be rescued from your enemies. ¹⁰ "And on the day of your joy and in your appointed times, at the beginning of your months, you will blow on the trumpets in addition to your burnt offerings and in addition to the sacrifices of your fellowship offerings. And they will be as a memorial for you _⌊before_⌋* your God; I am Yahweh your God." ¹¹ And it happened, in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month the cloud was lifted from upon the tabernacle of the testimony.* ¹² And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out for their journey* from the desert of Sinai, and the cloud dwelled in the desert of Paran. ¹³ They set out _⌊for the first time_⌋* on the command of Yahweh in the hand of Moses.* ¹⁴ The standard of the camp of the descendants* of Judah set out for the first time according to their divisions, with Nahshon son of Amminadab over its division. ¹⁵ And Nathanel son of Zuar was over the division of the descendants* of Issachar; ¹⁶ Eliab son of Helon was over the division of the tribe of the descendants* of Zebulun. ¹⁷ The tabernacle was taken down, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, the bearers of the tabernacle, set out. ¹⁸ And the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their divisions; Elizur son of Shedeur was over their division. ¹⁹ Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai was over the division of the sons of the tribe of Simeon. ²⁰ Eliasaph son of Deuel was over the division of the tribe of the descendants* of Gad. ²¹ The Kohathites, the bearers of the sanctuary, set out, and they set up the tabernacle before they arrived. ²² And the stand of the camp of the descendants* of Ephraim set out according to their divisions; Elishama son of Ammihud was over its division. ²³ Gamaliel son of Pedahzur was over the division of the tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh. ²⁴ Abidan son of Gideoni was over the division of the tribe of the descendants* of Benjamin. ²⁵ Then the standard of the camp of the descendants* of Dan, who formed a rear guard for all the camps, set out according to their divisions; Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai was over its division. ²⁶ Pagiel son of Ocran was over the division of the tribe of the descendants* of Asher. ²⁷ Ahira son of Enan was over the division of the tribe of the descendants* of Naphtali. ²⁸ These were the departures of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* according to their divisions; and so they set out. ²⁹ Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses, "We are setting out to the place that Yahweh said, 'I will give it to you'; go with us, and we will _⌊treat you well_⌋* because _⌊Yahweh promised_⌋* good concerning Israel." ³⁰ But he said to him, "I will not go. I will only go to my land and to my family." ³¹ He* said, "Please, do not abandon us because you know our encampment in the desert, and _⌊you should be our guide_⌋.* ³² Moreover, if you go with us, the good that Yahweh will do to us we will do to you." ³³ And so they set out from the mountain of Yahweh a journey of three days, with the ark of the covenant of Yahweh setting out ahead of them* three days' journey to search out a resting place for them; ³⁴ and the cloud of Yahweh was over them by day when they set out from the camp. ³⁵ And whenever the ark was setting out Moses would say,
"Rise up, Yahweh! May your enemies be scattered; may the ones that hate you flee from your presence." ³⁶ And when it rested he would say, "Return, Yahweh, to the countless thousands of Israel."

¹ * And it happened after the plague, *Yahweh said to Moses and to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying, ² "_⌊Take a census_⌋* of the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* all who are able to go out to war in Israel." ³ So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them on the desert-plateau of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, saying, ⁴ "Take a census of the community from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, just as Yahweh commanded Moses."
The Israelites who went out from the land of Egypt were: ⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, the descendants* of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;* ⁶ of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites;* of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.* ⁷ These are the clans of the Reubenites,* and the ones counted of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. ⁸ The children of Pallu: Eliab. ⁹ The children of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan, and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram who were appointed of the community, who rebelled against Moses and Aaron in the company of Korah, when they rebelled against Yahweh, ¹⁰ and the land opened its mouth and swallowed them with Korah, when that company died, when the fire consumed two hundred and fifty men, and they were a sign.* ¹¹ The children* of Korah, however, did not die. ¹² The descendants* of Simeon, according to their clans: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites;* of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites;* of Jakin, the clan of the Jakinites;* ¹³ of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites;* of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites.* ¹⁴ These were the clans of the Simeonites,* twenty-two thousand two hundred. ¹⁵ The descendants* of Gad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites;* of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites;* of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites;* ¹⁶ of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites;* of Eri, the clan of the Erites;* ¹⁷ of Arod, the clan of the Arodites;* of Areli, the clan of the Arelites;* ¹⁸ These were the clans of the descendants* of Gad according to the ones counted of them, forty thousand five hundred. ¹⁹ The sons of Judah: Er and Onan; but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. ²⁰ The descendants* of Judah according to their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites;* of Perez, the clan of the Perezites;* of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites.* ²¹ The children of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites;* of Hamul, the clan of the Hamulites.* ²² These were the clans of Judah according to the ones counted of them, seventy-six thousand five hundred. ²³ The descendants* of Issachar according to their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites;* of Puvah, the clan of the Punites;* ²⁴ of Jashub, the clans of the Jashubites;* of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites.* ²⁵ These were the clans of Issachar according to the ones counted of them, sixty-four thousand three hundred. ²⁶ The descendants* of Zebulun according to their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Seredites;* of Elon, the clan of the Elonites;* of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites.* ²⁷ These were the clans of the Zebulunites* according to the ones counted of them, sixty thousand five hundred. ²⁸ The descendants* of Joseph according to their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim. ²⁹ The descendants* of Manasseh: of Makir, the clan of the Makirites.* And Makir fathered Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.* ³⁰ These were the descendants* of Gilead: of Iezer, the clan of the Iezerites;* of Helek, the clan of the Helekites;* ³¹ and of Asriel, the clan of the Asrielites;* and of Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites;* ³² and of Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites;* and of Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites.* ³³ Zelophehad son of Hepher did not have sons, but only daughters; and the names* of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ³⁴ These were the clans of Manasseh, and the ones counted of them were fifty-two thousand seven hundred. ³⁵ These were the descendants* of Ephraim according to their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites;* of Beker, the clan of the Bekerites;* of Tahan, the clan of the Tahanites.* ³⁶ And these were the descendants* of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.* ³⁷ These were the clans of the descendants* of Ephraim according to the ones counted of them, thirty-two thousand five hundred. These were the descendants* of Joseph according to their clans. ³⁸ The descendants* of Benjamin according to their clans: of Bela, the clan of the Belaites;* of Ashbel, the clan of the Ashbelites;* of Ahiram, the clan of the Ahiramites;* ³⁹ of Shephupham, the clan of the Shuphamites;* of Hupham, the clan of the Huphamites.* ⁴⁰ The sons of Bela were Ard and Naaman: of Ard, the clan of the Ardites;* of Naaman, the clan of the Naamites.* ⁴¹ These were the descendants* of Benjamin according to their clans. And the ones counted of them were forty-five thousand six hundred. ⁴² These were the descendants* of Dan according to their clans: of Shuham, the clan of the Shuhamites.* These were the clans of Dan according to their clans. ⁴³ All the clans of the Shuhamites,* according to the ones counted of them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred. ⁴⁴ The descendants* of Asher according to their clans: of Imnah, the clan of the Imnahites;* of Ishvi, the clan of the Ishvites;* of Beriah, the clan of the Beriahites.* ⁴⁵ The descendants* of Beriah: of Heber, the clan of the Heberites;* of Malkiel, the clan of the Malkielites.* ⁴⁶ The name of the daughter of Asher was Serah. ⁴⁷ These were the clans of the descendants* of Asher according to the ones counted of them, fifty-three thousand four hundred. ⁴⁸ The descendants* of Naphtali according to their clans: of Jahzeel, the clan of the Jahzeelites;* of Guni, the clan of the Gunites;* ⁴⁹ of Jezer, the clan of the Jezerites;* of Shillem, the clan of the Shillemites.* ⁵⁰ These were the clans of Naphtali according to their clans, the ones counted of them, forty-five thousand four hundred. ⁵¹ These were the ones counted of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty. ⁵² Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ⁵³ "For these the land must be divided as an inheritance according to the number of names. ⁵⁴ For the larger group you must increase their inheritance, and for the smaller group you must make smaller their inheritance; each must be given _⌊their_⌋* inheritance according to the number of the ones counted of them. ⁵⁵ Surely the land will be divided by lot. They will inherit according to the names of the tribes of their ancestors.* ⁵⁶ _⌊Their_⌋* inheritance must be divided according to the lot between the larger and smaller groups." ⁵⁷ These are the ones counted of the Levites according to their clans: of Gershon, the clan of the Gershonites;* of Kohath, the clan of the Kohathites;* of Merari, the clan of the Merarites.* ⁵⁸ These are the clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites,* the clan of the Hebronites,* the clan of the Mahlites,* the clan of the Mushites,* the clan of the Korahites.* Kohath fathered Amram. ⁵⁹ The name of the wife of Amram was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whose mother bore her for Levi in Egypt; she bore to Amram: Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam. ⁶⁰ To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. ⁶¹ But Nadab and Abihu died when they presented strange fire _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh. ⁶² The ones counted were twenty-three thousand, every male from _⌊a month old_⌋* and above, because they were not counted in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* since no inheritance was given to them in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁶³ These were the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who counted the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on the desert-plateau of Moab on the Jordan across Jericho. ⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For Yahweh said to them, "They will surely die in the desert." And not a man was left over from them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

¹ Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ² "Command the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and say to them, 'When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that was allotted to you as an inheritance, the land of Canaan according to its boundaries. ³ Your southern edge will be from the desert of Zin toward the side of Edom, and your southern border will be from the end of the Salt Sea* to the east; ⁴ your boundary will turn from the south to the ascent of Akrabbim* and will pass over to Zin, and its limits will be from the south of Kadesh Barnea; it will continue to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon. ⁵ The boundary will turn from Azmon to the valley of Egypt, and its limits will be to the sea. ⁶ " 'Your western boundary will be the Great Sea;* this will be your western boundary. ⁷ Your northern border will be from the Great Sea;* you will make a boundary from the Great Sea* to Mount Hor. ⁸ From Mount Hor you will make a boundary to reach Hamath; the limits of the territory will be at Zedad. ⁹ The boundary will go out to Ziphron, and its limits will be at Hazar Enan. This will be your boundary to the north. ¹⁰ " 'You will mark out your eastern boundary from Hazar Enan to Shepham; ¹¹ the boundary will go down from Shepham to Riblah from the east side of Ain, and the boundary will go down and border on the eastern side of the Sea of Kinnereth. ¹² The boundary will go down to the Jordan, and its limits will be at the Salt Sea.* This will be your land according to its boundaries all around.'" ¹³ So Moses commanded the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* saying, "This is the land that you will obtain as an inheritance for yourself by lot, which Yahweh commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes. ¹⁴ For the tribe of the children of the Reubenites,* the children of the Gadites,* and the half-tribe of Manasseh took their inheritance according to the house of their families.* ¹⁵ The two and a half tribes have taken their inheritance from beyond the Jordan across Jericho, east toward the sunrise." ¹⁶ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ¹⁷ "These are the names of the men who divide up the land for your inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. ¹⁸ You will take one leader from every tribe to divide up the land for inheritance. ¹⁹ These are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; ²⁰ of the tribe of the descendants of Simeon, Samuel son of Ammihud; ²¹ of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad son of Chislon; ²² of the tribe of the descendants* of Dan, the leader Bukki son of Jogli; ²³ of the descendants* of Joseph, the tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh, the leader Hanniel son of Ephod. ²⁴ Of the tribe of the descendants* of Ephraim, the leader Kemuel son of Shiphtan; ²⁵ of the tribe of the descendants* of Zebulum, the leader Elizaphan son of Parnach; ²⁶ of the tribe of the descendants* of Issachar, the leader Paltiel son of Azzan; ²⁷ of the tribe of the descendants* of Asher, the leader Ahihud son of Shelomi; ²⁸ of the tribe of the descendants* of Naphtali, the leader Pedahel son of Ammihud." ²⁹ These are those whom Yahweh commanded to allot to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* the land of Canaan.

¹ These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, ² Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. ³ The sons of Judah: Er, Onan and Shelah; these three were born to him from Bathshua the Canaanite. Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and he put him to death. ⁴ And Tamar his daughter-in-law bore Perez and Zerah to him. The sons of Judah were five in all. ⁵ The sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul. ⁶ The sons of Zerah: Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Dara, five in all. ⁷ The son of Carmi: Achar, the troubler of Israel, who acted unfaithfully in the matter of the devoted thing. ⁸ And the son of Ethan was Azariah.

¹⁵ Thus says Yahweh, "A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, the weeping of bitterness. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted because of her children, for they are no more."

⁷ Our fathers have sinned, they are no more; we bear their iniquity.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he* saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent soldiers* and* executed all the children in Bethlehem and in all the region around it from the age of two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined precisely from the wise men.

¹⁸ "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because _⌊they exist no longer_⌋*."*

⁹ And Joseph remembered the dreams which he had dreamed concerning them, and he said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land!" ¹⁰ And they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food. ¹¹ We all are sons of one man. We are honest men. We, your servants, are not spies."

²⁴ Why do you* hide your* face and count me as your* enemy?

¹¹ and he has kindled his wrath against me, and _⌊he has counted me as one of his foes_⌋.*

²¹ And departing from there, Jesus went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. ²² And behold, a Canaanite woman from that district came and cried out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!" ²³ But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came up and* asked him, saying, "Send her away, because she is crying out after us!" ²⁴ But he answered and* said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." ²⁵ But she came and* knelt down before him, saying, "Lord, help me!" ²⁶ And he answered and* said, "It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it* to the dogs!" ²⁷ So she said, "Yes, Lord, for even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table." ²⁸ Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, your faith is great! Let it be done for you as you want." And her daughter was healed from that hour.

⁷ And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger to them. And he spoke with them harshly and said to them, "From where have you come?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food."

¹² Then he said to them, "No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land."

²⁰ You must bring your youngest brother to me, and then your words will be confirmed and you will not die." And they did so.

³ Then Judah said to him, "The man solemnly admonished us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

²⁰ And we said to my lord, 'We have an aged father, and a younger brother, the child of his old age, and his brother died, and he alone remains from his mother, and his father loves him.' ²¹ Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me that I may set my eyes upon him.' ²² Then we said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; if he should leave his father, then he* would die.' ²³ Then you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not again see my face.' ²⁴ And it happened that we went up to your servant, my father, and told him the words of my lord. ²⁵ And when our father said, 'Buy a little food for us,' ²⁶ then we said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we shall go down. For we will not be able to see the face of the man unless our youngest brother is with us.'

¹³ "You shall fear Yahweh your God, and you shall serve him, and by his name you shall swear.

²⁶ She said, "Excuse me, my lord. As _⌊you live_⌋,* my lord, I am the woman who stood with you in this place to pray to Yahweh.

⁵⁵ Now when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, "Whose son is this young man, Abner?" And Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I do not know."

³ Then David _⌊took an oath_⌋* again and said, "Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thought, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he worry.' But _⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋* and _⌊as your soul lives_⌋,* surely there is merely a step between me and death!"

² And though they say, '_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,'* _⌊therefore_⌋* they swear falsely."

⁷ "_⌊How_⌋* can I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me, and they have sworn by those who are not gods. But I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery, and flocked to the house of a prostitute.

³³ "Again you have heard that it was said to the _⌊people of old_⌋,* 'Do not swear falsely,* but fulfill your oaths to the Lord.'* ³⁴ But I say to you, do not swear at all, either by heaven, because it is the throne of God, ³⁵ or by the earth, because it is the footstool of his feet, or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great king. ³⁶ And do not swear by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. ³⁷ But let your statement be 'Yes, yes; no, no,' and anything beyond these is from the evil one.*

¹⁶ "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing! But whoever swears by the gold of the temple is bound by his oath.'* ¹⁷ Fools and blind people! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that makes the gold holy? ¹⁸ And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing! But whoever swears by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.'* ¹⁹ Blind people! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy? ²⁰ Therefore the one who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything that is on it. ²¹ And the one who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. ²² And the one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by the one who sits on it.

¹² Now above all, my brothers, do not swear either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no, no, in order that you may not fall under judgment.

⁴ And the chief of the guard appointed Joseph to be with them, and he attended them. And they were in custody _⌊many days_⌋.*

⁷ And he asked the court officials of Pharaoh that were with him in the custody of his master's house, "Why are your faces sad today?"

¹⁰ Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and he put me and the chief baker in the custody of the house of the chief of the guard.

¹² Then* they put him in custody _⌊so that_⌋* the matter might be made clear to them in accordance with the mouth of Yahweh.

⁶⁵ You have dealt well with your servant, O Yahweh, according to your word.

²² And they will be gathered in a gathering, like a prisoner _⌊in_⌋* a pit. And they will be shut _⌊in_⌋* a prison and be punished _⌊after_⌋* many days.

³ And they laid hands on them and put them* in custody until the next day, because it was already evening.

¹⁸ And they laid hands on the apostles and put them in the public prison.

¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a few days according to what seemed appropriate to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we can have a share in his holiness.

¹¹ And Abraham said, "Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place; they will kill me on account of the matter of my wife.

⁴³ You* shall not rule over him with ruthlessness, but* you shall revere your God.

⁹ So I said, "The thing that you are doing is not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God to prevent the disgrace from the nations, our enemies?

¹⁵ The former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people, and they took food and wine from them, besides forty shekels. Also, their servants controlled the people, but I did not do so because of the fear of God.

² saying, "There was a certain judge in a certain town who did not fear God and did not respect people.

⁴ And he was not willing for a time, but after these things he said to himself, 'Even if I do not fear God or respect people,

³ And he put them in custody in the house of the chief of the guard, into the prison where Joseph was confined.

⁵⁶ And the famine was over the whole land, and Joseph opened all the storehouses* and sold food to the Egyptians. And the famine was severe in the land of Egypt.

¹ When Jacob realized that there was grain in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?" ² Then he said, "Look, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy grain for us there that we may live and not die."

²⁶ Then they loaded their grain upon their donkeys and went away from there.

¹ Now the famine in the land was severe. ² And it happened that as they finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt their father said to them, "Return and buy a little food for us."

²³ And to his father he sent _⌊as follows_⌋:* ten donkeys carrying the best of Egypt, and ten donkeys carrying grain and food and provisions for his father for the journey.

⁷ to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoner out from the dungeon, those who sit in darkness from the house of imprisonment.

²² But* this is a people plundered and looted; all of them are trapped in holes, and they are kept hidden in houses of imprisonment. They have become like plunder, and there is no one who saves; like booty, and there is no one who says, "Restore!"

¹⁵ And the officials were angry at Jeremiah and they struck him. And they put him in _⌊prison_⌋,* in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for they had converted it to the _⌊prison_⌋*.

²² And Noah did according to all that God commanded him; thus he did.

¹⁵ By this you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh you will not go out from here unless your youngest brother comes here.

⁵ but _⌊if you will not send_⌋* him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

¹⁹ So they approached the man who was over Joseph's house and spoke to him at the doorway of the house.

²³ Then you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not again see my face.'

⁵ His mother said to the servants, "Whatever he says to you, do it!"*

²³ And it happened that as Joseph came to his brothers they stripped Joseph of his robe, the robe with long sleeves,* that was upon him. ²⁴ And they took him and threw him into the pit (the pit was empty; there was no water in it). ²⁵ Then they sat down to eat some food. And they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead. And their camels were carrying aromatic gum and balm and spices _⌊on the way_⌋* to Egypt. ²⁶ Then Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, but our hand shall not be against him, for he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers agreed. ²⁸ Then Midianite traders passed by. And they* drew Joseph up and brought him up from the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph to Egypt.

⁹ Then the chief of the cupbearers spoke with Pharaoh, saying, "I remember my sins today.

²³ But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh, and know that your sin will find you.

⁷ Adoni-bezek said, "Seventy kings with _⌊their thumbs and big toes_⌋* cut off used to pick up scraps under my table; just as I have done, so God has repaid to me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.

¹³ Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against Yahweh!"* Nathan said to David, "Yahweh has also forgiven your sin; you shall not die.

¹⁸ She said to Elijah, "_⌊What do you have against me_⌋,* O man of God, that you have come to me to make known my guilt and to cause my son to die?"

²⁷ "He will sing to men, and he will say, 'I have sinned and have perverted what is right, and it was not paid back to me. ²⁸ He redeemed my life from going down into the pit, so* _⌊I will enjoy the light_⌋.'*

³¹ "Indeed, does anyone say to God, 'I have endured chastisement; I will not act corruptly again; ³² teach me yourself _⌊what I cannot see_⌋;* if I have done wrong, I will not repeat it'?

⁸ "And if they are tied up with fetters, if they are caught in the cords of misery, ⁹ then* he declares their work to them, and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly.

²⁷ When your panic comes like a storm, and your calamity arrives like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you, ²⁸ then they will call* me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but not find me.

¹³ He who closes his ear from the cry of the poor, he also will cry out and not be heard.

¹¹ Rescue those who are led away to the death and those who stagger to the slaughter. If you hold back, ¹² if you say, "Look, we do not know this," does not he who weighs hearts perceive it? And he who keeps your soul,* he knows and will repay humankind according to his deeds.

¹⁷ A person who is burdened with the blood of _⌊another_⌋,* until death he will flee; do not take hold of him.

¹⁷ Did you not do this to yourself, by forsaking Yahweh, your God, at the time of your leading in the way?

¹⁹ Your wickedness will chastise you, and your apostasies will reprove you. Therefore know and see that it is evil and bitter, your forsaking of Yahweh, your God, and fear of me is not in you," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.

¹⁸ "You obtained this for yourself because of your way and your deeds. This is your doom, for it is bitter, yes, it has reached up to your heart."

¹⁷ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* thus says Yahweh, 'You have not listened to me to proclaim release each one to his fellow countryman and each one to his neighbor. Look, I am going to proclaim to you a release,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'to the sword, to the plague, and to the famine, and I will make you a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth.

¹⁵ _⌊I will return again_⌋* to my place until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face; in their distress they will search* me.

² For by what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and by what measure you measure out, it will be measured out to you.

³ Then when* Judas, the one who had betrayed him, saw that he had been condemned, he regretted what he had done* and* returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders, ⁴ saying, "I have sinned by* betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"*

⁴³ And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life crippled than, having two hands, to go into hell—into the unquenchable fire!*

⁴⁵ And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off! It is better for you to enter into life lame than, having two feet, to be thrown into hell!*

⁴⁸ 'where their worm does not die and the fire is not extinguished.'*

²⁸ for I have five brothers, so that he could warn them, in order that they also should not come to this place of torment!'

¹⁸ And many of those who had believed came, confessing and disclosing their practices,

¹³ For judgment is merciless to the one who has not practiced mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, so that he will forgive us our* sins and will cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

¹⁰ And he said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground.

⁵ And* _⌊your lifeblood_⌋* I will require; from _⌊every animal_⌋* I will require it. And from the hand of humankind, from the hand of each man to his brother I will require the life of humankind. ⁶ "As for the one shedding the blood of humankind, by humankind his blood shall be shed, for God made humankind in his own image.

²¹ And Reuben heard it and delivered him from their hand and said, "We must not take his life." ²² And Reuben said to them, "You must not shed blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the desert, but do not lay a hand on him"—so that he might rescue him from their hand to return him to his father.

²⁹ Then Reuben returned to the pit and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit. And he tore his clothes. ³⁰ And he returned to his brothers and said, "The boy _⌊is gone_⌋!* Now I, _⌊what can I do_⌋?"*

³² Yahweh will return his blood on his head, because he fell upon two men, more righteous and better than he, and he killed them with the sword, even though my father did not know it; namely Abner son of Ner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of the army of Judah.

²² So King Joash did not remember the loyal love that Jehoiada had shown to him, and he killed his son. And as he was dying he said, "May Yahweh see and avenge!"

¹² for he who _⌊avenges bloodshed_⌋* remembers them. He does not forget the distressed cry of the afflicted.

¹⁸ _⌊When I say_⌋* to the wicked, 'Surely you will die,' and you do not warn him and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way _⌊so that he may live_⌋,* that wicked person will die because of his guilt, and from your hand I will seek his blood.

⁵⁰ so that the blood of all the prophets that has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the temple building.* Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation!

⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we are receiving _⌊what we deserve_⌋* for what we have done. But this man has done nothing wrong!"

⁴ And when the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying* to one another, "Doubtless this man is a murderer whom, although he* was rescued from the sea, Justice* has not permitted to live!"

¹⁵ who show the work of the law written on their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts one after another accusing or even defending them

¹⁰ If anyone is going into captivity, into captivity he goes. If anyone is to be killed by the sword, by the sword he is to be killed.
Here is the patient endurance and the faith of the saints.

⁹ And people were burned up by the great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has the authority over these plagues, and they did not repent to give him glory.

¹³ But when he—the Spirit of truth—comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak from himself, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will proclaim to you the things to come. ¹⁴ He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and will proclaim it* to you.

²⁰ Therefore we are ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as if* God were imploring you through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

²⁵ And it happened that on the third day, while they were in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dinah, each took his sword and came against the unsuspecting city and killed all the males.

²³ And he said, "Peace to you; do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father must have given you a treasure in your sacks; your money came to me." And he brought Simeon out to them.

³⁰ Then Joseph _⌊hurried away_⌋,* _⌊being overcome with emotion_⌋* toward his brother, and sought for a place to cry. Then he went into a room and wept there.

¹⁴ Then he fell upon the neck of his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. ¹⁵ And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them. And afterward his brothers spoke with him.

⁵ Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords. Let me* not come into their council. ⁶ Let not my person* be joined to their company. For in their anger they killed men, and at their pleasure they hamstrung cattle. ⁷ Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and I will scatter them in Israel.

⁹ In all their distress, _⌊there was no distress_⌋,* and the messenger of his _⌊presence_⌋* saved them, in his love and compassion he himself redeemed them, and he lifted them up, and he supported them all the days of old.

⁴¹ And when he approached and* saw the city, he wept over it,

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; if a member* is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

¹⁵ For we do not have a high priest who is not able to sympathize with our weaknesses, but who has been tempted in all things in the same way, without sin.

²² And have mercy on those who doubt, ²³ and save others by* snatching them from the fire, and have mercy on others with fear, hating even the tunic stained by the flesh.

¹ Then he commanded the one who was over his household, saying, "Fill the sacks of the men with food as much as they are able to carry, and put each one's money in the mouth of his sack. ² And my cup—the cup of silver—you shall put into the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and the money for his grain. And he did according to the word of Joseph that he had commanded.

²¹ And the sons of Israel did so. And Joseph gave them wagons at the word of Pharaoh, and gave them provisions for the journey.

¹ "Ho! Everyone thirsty, come to the waters! And whoever has no money, come, buy and eat, and come, buy without money, wine and milk without price!

⁴⁴ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

³³ But seek first his kingdom and righteousness,* and all these things will be added to you.

¹⁷ Pay back no one evil for evil. Take thought for what is good in the sight of all people. ¹⁸ If it is possible on your part, be at peace with all people. ¹⁹ Do not take revenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay,"* says the Lord. ²⁰ But "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by* doing this, you will heap up coals of fire upon his head."* ²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

⁹ not repaying evil for evil or insult for insult, but on the other hand blessing others, because for this reason you were called, so that you could inherit a blessing.

²¹ but when we came to the place of lodging and we opened our sacks, then behold, each one's money was in the mouth of his sack—our money in its full weight—so we have returned with it in our hands. ²² Now, other money we have brought down in our hand to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks."

¹¹ Then each man quickly brought down his sack to the ground, and each one opened his sack.

²⁴ _⌊And_⌋* on the way, at the place of overnight lodging, Yahweh encountered him and sought to kill him.

⁷ And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

³⁴ And he came up and* bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine, and he put him on his own animal and* brought him to an inn and took care of him.

³³ Then Isaac _⌊trembled violently_⌋.* Then he said, "Who then was he that hunted wild game and brought it to me, and I ate it all before you came, and I blessed him? Moreover, he will be blessed!"

³⁶ As for* the ones who remain among you, I will bring* fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight _⌊before_⌋* a sword, and they shall fall, but* there shall not be a pursuer.

⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.*

⁵ the food of his table, the seat of his servants, the _⌊manner_⌋* of his servants and their clothing, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings which he offered in the house of Yahweh, _⌊she was breathless_⌋.*

² From the end of the earth* I call to you when my heart grows faint. You will lead me to a rock that is higher than I.

⁶ I opened myself to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone;* my heart sank* when he turned away.* I sought him, but I did not find him; I called him, but he did not answer me.

⁷ I form light and I create darkness; I make peace and I create evil; I am Yahweh; I do all these things.

¹⁷ Yahweh has done what he has planned; he has fulfilled his promise that he ordained from the days of old; he has demolished and not shown mercy; he has made an enemy rejoice over you, he has exalted the _⌊might_⌋* of your foes.

³⁷ _⌊Who can speak_⌋* and it will happen if the Lord has not commanded it?

⁶ Or is a horn blown in a city and people are not afraid? Or does a disaster occur in the city and Yahweh has not done it?

²⁶ people fainting from fear and expectation of what is coming on the inhabited earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.*

¹⁰ You shall dwell with us and the land shall be before you; settle and trade in it, and acquire property in it."

²¹ "These men are at peace with us. Let them dwell in the land and let them trade in it. Now, behold, the land is _⌊broad enough for them_⌋.* Let us take their daughters as wives, and let us give our daughters to them.

¹⁵ apart from that of the men of the traders and the profits of the traders, and all the kings of the Arabs and the governors of the land.

⁴ He plucked the top of its new plant shoot, and he brought it to the land of Canaan and put it in a city of merchants,

²⁷ And one of them later opened his sack to give fodder to his donkey at the lodging place and saw his money—behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. ²⁸ And he said to his brothers, "My money was returned and moreover, behold, it is in my sack!" Then _⌊their hearts failed them_⌋* and each of them trembled and said, "What is this God has done to us?"

¹² And take double the money in your hands. Take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.

¹⁵ So the men took this gift, and they took double money in their hands, and Benjamin, and they rose up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

²¹ but when we came to the place of lodging and we opened our sacks, then behold, each one's money was in the mouth of his sack—our money in its full weight—so we have returned with it in our hands.

²⁰ Now then, come, let us kill him and throw him in one of the pits. Then we will say a wild animal devoured him. Then we will see what his dreams become." ²¹ And Reuben heard it and delivered him from their hand and said, "We must not take his life." ²² And Reuben said to them, "You must not shed blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the desert, but do not lay a hand on him"—so that he might rescue him from their hand to return him to his father. ²³ And it happened that as Joseph came to his brothers they stripped Joseph of his robe, the robe with long sleeves,* that was upon him. ²⁴ And they took him and threw him into the pit (the pit was empty; there was no water in it). ²⁵ Then they sat down to eat some food. And they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a caravan of Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead. And their camels were carrying aromatic gum and balm and spices _⌊on the way_⌋* to Egypt. ²⁶ Then Judah said to his brothers, "What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? ²⁷ Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, but our hand shall not be against him, for he is our brother, our own flesh." And his brothers agreed. ²⁸ Then Midianite traders passed by. And they* drew Joseph up and brought him up from the pit, and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they brought Joseph to Egypt. ²⁹ Then Reuben returned to the pit and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit. And he tore his clothes. ³⁰ And he returned to his brothers and said, "The boy _⌊is gone_⌋!* Now I, _⌊what can I do_⌋?"* ³¹ Then they took the robe of Joseph and slaughtered a goat, and dipped the robe in the blood. ³² Then they sent the robe with long sleeves* and they brought it to their father and said, "We found this; please examine it. Is it the robe of your son or not?" ³³ And he recognized it and said, "The robe of my son! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph is surely torn to pieces!" ³⁴ And Jacob tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his loins and mourned for his son many days. ³⁵ And all his sons and daughters tried to console him, but he refused to be consoled. And he said, "No, I shall go down to my son, to Sheol, mourning." And his father wept for him.

²⁸ And Israel said, "It is enough. Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die."

¹² And Joseph provided his father and his brothers and all the household of his father with food, according to the number of their children.

¹ Then David _⌊thought to himself_⌋,* "Now I will perish one day by the hand of Saul! There is nothing better for me but that I must certainly escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will desist from searching for me further in all of the territories of Israel, and so I will escape from his hand."

⁷ Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will not return to see good.

¹⁹ Many are the distresses of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

⁸ The end of a matter is better than its beginning; _⌊better to be slow to anger than hot-headed_⌋.*

⁹ Therefore by this he will make atonement for the guilt of Jacob, and this will be all of the fruit of the removal of his sin: _⌊when he makes_⌋* all the stones of the altar like crushed stones of chalk, no poles of Asherah worship or incense altars will stand.

¹⁰ I was the one who said, "I must go in the quiet of my days; I am summoned through the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years."

¹⁰ You must not fear, for I am with you; you must not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, indeed I will help you, indeed I will take hold of you with the right hand of my salvation.

¹³ For I, Yahweh your God, am grasping your right hand; _⌊it is I who say_⌋* to you, "You must not fear; I myself, I will help you. ¹⁴ You must not fear, O worm of Jacob; people of Israel, I myself, I will help you," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and your redeemer is the holy one of Israel.

³¹ And immediately Jesus extended his* hand and* caught him and said to him, "You of little faith! Why did you doubt?"

²⁸ And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose,

³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

¹³ Temptation has not come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will also make a way out together with the temptation, so that you may be able to endure it.

¹⁷ For our momentary light affliction is producing in us an eternal weight of glory _⌊beyond all measure and proportion_⌋*,

⁷ Therefore be patient, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the soil, being patient concerning it until it receives the early and late rains. ⁸ You also be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is near. ⁹ Brothers, do not complain against one another, in order that you may not be judged. Behold, the judge stands before the doors! ¹⁰ Brothers, take as an example of perseverance and endurance the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

⁹ I myself will be surety for him. You may seek him from my hand. If I do not bring him back to you and present him before you, then I will stand guilty before you forever.

⁹ and the sons of Reuben: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

⁷ Will Yahweh be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriads of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

¹⁶ Then they journeyed from Bethel. And _⌊when they were still some distance_⌋* from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor. And she had hard labor. ¹⁷ And _⌊when her labor was the most difficult_⌋* the midwife said to her, "Do not be afraid _⌊for you have another son_⌋."* ¹⁸ And it happened that when her life was departing (for she was dying), she called his name Ben-Oni.* But his father called him Benjamin.*

³³ And he recognized it and said, "The robe of my son! A wild animal has devoured him! Joseph is surely torn to pieces!"

³⁵ And all his sons and daughters tried to console him, but he refused to be consoled. And he said, "No, I shall go down to my son, to Sheol, mourning." And his father wept for him.

⁴ But Jacob did not send Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, for _⌊he feared harm would come to him_⌋.*

⁶ You must act according to your wisdom, but you must not let his gray hair go down to Sheol in peace.

¹⁸ And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not abandon me until I proclaim your _⌊strength_⌋* to this generation, your power to every one that comes after.

¹⁰ As for the days of our years, within them are seventy years or if by strength eighty years, and their pride* is trouble and disaster, for it passes quickly and we fly away.

¹⁴ I saw all the works that are done under the sun. Look! Everything is vanity and chasing wind.

²⁶ For to the person who is good in his eyes, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and heaping up only to give it to him who is pleasing to him. This also is vanity and chasing wind!

⁴ Even* to your old age I am he; even* to your advanced age I myself will support you. I myself have made you, and I myself will carry you, and I myself will support you, and I will save you.
