These are the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan. ⁶ And Esau took his wives and his sons and his daughters, and all the persons of his household, and his sheep and goats, and all his cattle, and all the goods that he had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to a land away from his brother Jacob. ⁷ For their possessions were _⌊too many to live together_⌋,* so that the land of their sojourning was not able to support them on account of their livestock. ⁸ So Esau dwelled in the hill country of Seir (Esau, that is Edom). ⁹ Now these are the descendants of Esau, the father of Edom, in the hill country of Seir. ¹⁰ These are the names of the sons of Esau: Eliphaz, the son of Adah, the wife of Esau; Reuel, the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau. ¹¹ The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz. ¹² (Now Timnah was the concubine of Eliphaz, the son of Esau. And she bore Amalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, the wife of Esau. ¹³ Now these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. And Lotan's sister was Timna. ²³ Now these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ Now these are the sons of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ Now these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir. ³¹ Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ³² Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom. And the name of his city was Dinhabah. ³³ And Bela died, and Jobab, the son of Zerah from Bozrah, reigned in his place. ³⁴ And Jobab died, and Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. ³⁵ And Husham died, and Hadad, son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the field* of Moab reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. ³⁶ And Hadad died, and Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place. ³⁷ And Samlah died, and Shaul from Rehoboth on the Euphrates* reigned in his place. ³⁸ And Shaul died, and Baal-Hanan, the son of Acbor, reigned in his place. ³⁹ And Baal-Hanan the son of Acbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Pau, and the name of his wife was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, daughter of Mezahab. ⁴⁰ Now these are the names of the chiefs of Esau according to their families, according to their dwelling places, by their names: the chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, ⁴¹ Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁴² Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁴³ Magdiel, and Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom (that is, Esau, the father of Edom) according to their settlements in the land of their possession.

¹⁷ that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies.

²⁴ And when her days to give birth were completed,* then—behold—twins were in her womb. ²⁵ And the first came out red, all _⌊his body_⌋* was like a hairy coat, so they called his name Esau. ²⁶ And afterward his brother came out, and his hand grasped the heel of Esau, so his name was called Jacob. And Isaac _⌊was sixty years old_⌋* at their birth. ²⁷ And the boys grew up. And Esau was a skilled* hunter, a man of the field, but Jacob was a peaceful man, living in tents. ²⁸ And Isaac loved Esau because _⌊he could eat of his game_⌋,* but Rebekah loved Jacob. ²⁹ Once* Jacob cooked a thick stew, and Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. ³⁰ And Esau said to Jacob, "Give me _⌊some of that red stuff_⌋* to gulp down, for I am exhausted!" (Therefore his name was called Edom). ³¹ Then Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright _⌊first_⌋."* ³² And Esau said, "Look, I am going to die; now what is this birthright to me?" ³³ Then Jacob said, "Swear to me _⌊first_⌋."* And he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. ³⁴ Then Jacob gave Esau bread, and thick lentil stew, and he ate and drank. Then he got up and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.

³⁵ And he said, "Your brother came in deceit and took your blessing." ³⁶ Then he said, "_⌊Isn't that why he is named Jacob_⌋?* He has deceived me these two times. He took my birthright and, look, now he has taken my blessing!" Then he said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?" ³⁷ Then Isaac answered and said to Esau, "Behold, I have made him lord over you and I have given him all his brothers as servants, and with grain and wine I have sustained him. Now what can I do for you, my son?" ³⁸ And Esau said to his father, "Have you only one blessing, my father? Bless me also, my father!" And Esau lifted up his voice and wept. ³⁹ Then Isaac his father answered and said to him,
"Your home shall be from* the fatness of the land, and from the dew of heaven above. ⁴⁰ But by your sword you shall live, and you shall serve your brother. But it shall be that when free yourself you shall tear off his yoke from your neck. ⁴¹ Then Esau held a grudge against Jacob on account of the blessing with which his father had blessed him. And Esau said in his heart,* "The days of mourning for my father are coming, then I will kill Jacob my brother."

³ Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the territory of Edom. ⁴ And he instructed them, saying, "Thus you must say to my lord, to Esau, 'Thus says your servant Jacob, I have dwelled as an alien with Laban, and I have remained there until now. ⁵ And I have acquired cattle, male donkeys, flocks, and male and female slaves, and I have sent to tell my lord, to find favor in your eyes.'" ⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob and said, "We came to your brother, to Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him." ⁷ Then Jacob was very frightened and distressed. So he divided the people, flocks, cattle, and camels that were with him into two companies.

¹⁴ From Kadesh Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom: "Thus your brother Israel has said, 'You know all the hardship that has found us; ¹⁵ our ancestors* went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt _⌊a long time_⌋,* and the Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors.* ¹⁶ Then we cried to Yahweh, and he heard our voice; he sent an angel and brought us out from Egypt. And look, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory. ¹⁷ Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'" ¹⁸ Then Edom said to him, "You will not pass through us* lest _⌊we will go out_⌋* to meet you with the sword." ¹⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to him, "We will go up on the main road, and if we* and our livestock* drink your water, we will pay for it.* It is only a small matter; let us pass through on our feet."* ²⁰ But he said, "You will not go through." And Edom went out to meet _⌊them_⌋* with a large army and a strong hand. ²¹ So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory, and Israel turned aside from him.

⁷ "You shall not abhor an Edomite, because he is your brother; you shall not abhor an Egyptian because you were an alien in his land.

³⁵ The sons of Esau: Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.

¹ Who is this, coming from Edom, from Bozrah in bright red garments? Who is this honored in his garment, lying down in his great strength? "It is I, speaking in justice, _⌊mighty_⌋* to save!"

¹² Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Because of the doings of Edom in avenging himself with vengeance for* the house of Judah, and so they became very guilty and* they avenged themselves on them,"

²⁵ And he said,
"Cursed be Canaan, a slave of slaves he shall be to his brothers."

³⁴ And when Esau was forty years old he took as wife Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite. ³⁵ And _⌊they made life bitter_⌋* for Isaac and Rebekah.

⁴⁶ Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I loathe my life because of the Hittite women.* If Jacob takes a wife from Hittite women* like these, from the _⌊native women_⌋,* _⌊what am I living for_⌋?"*

⁹ then Esau went to Ishmael and took Mahalath, the daughter of Ishmael, son of Abraham, sister of Nebaioth, as a wife, in addition to the wives he had.

²⁵ Now these are the sons of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah.

¹³ And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names according to their family records. The firstborn of Ishmael was Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

¹⁸ And they came to Reuel, their father, and he said, "_⌊Why have you come so quickly_⌋* today?"

²⁹ Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, the father-in-law of Moses, "We are setting out to the place that Yahweh said, 'I will give it to you'; go with us, and we will _⌊treat you well_⌋* because _⌊Yahweh promised_⌋* good concerning Israel."

¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him.

²⁹ And Isaac passed away and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

⁵ And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot _⌊his nephew_⌋,* and all their possessions that they had gathered, and all the persons that they had acquired in Haran, and they went out to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to the land of Canaan.

⁶ And the land could not _⌊support them_⌋* so as to live together, because their possessions were so many that* they were not able to live together.

¹¹ So* Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan. And Lot journeyed from the east, and so they separated _⌊from each other_⌋.*

⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God."

²³ And Yahweh said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples _⌊from birth_⌋* shall be divided. And _⌊one people shall be stronger than the other_⌋.* And the elder shall serve the younger."

⁴ And may he give you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your descendants with you, that you may take possession of the land of your sojourning, which God gave to Abraham."

³ Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the territory of Edom.

¹³ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders; _⌊in exchange for people_⌋* and an object of bronze they gave you your wares.

¹³ and cinnamon and amomum* and incense and ointment and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine wheat flour and wheat and domesticated animals and sheep and horses and carriages and _⌊slaves_⌋* and human lives.

⁹ By faith he lived in the land of promise as a stranger, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow heirs of the same promise.

⁶ And the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-Paran, which is at the wilderness.

¹⁹ These are the sons of Esau, and these are their chiefs (that is, Edom). ²⁰ These are the sons of Seir, the Horite, the inhabitants of the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah,

⁵ Do not get involved in battle* with them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even _⌊a foot's breadth_⌋* of it; since I have given Mount Seir as a possession for Esau.

⁴ and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt.

⁴² And some of them from the Simeonites went to Mount Seir, five hundred men. And Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi, were under their leadership.

¹⁰ And now, look, the people* of Moab and Ammon and Mount Seir whom you did not allow Israel to come against when they came from Egypt, from whom they turned aside and did not destroy,

²³ when the people* of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to destroy and demolish them. And when the inhabitants of Seir had made an end of them, each helped to destroy his comrade.

² "Son of man,* set your face against the mountain of Seir and prophesy against it, ³ and you must say to it, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Look! I am against you, mountain of Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against you, and I will make you a desolation and a wasteland. ⁴ Your cities I will make ruins, and you will be a desolation, and then you will know that I am Yahweh, ⁵ because there has been to you _⌊an ancient hostility_⌋,* and you handed over the _⌊Israelites_⌋* to the power of the sword at the time of their disaster, at the time of _⌊their final punishment_⌋.* ⁶ Therefore _⌊as I live_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, "Certainly to blood guilt I will prepare you and blood* will pursue; _⌊since_⌋* _⌊you did not hate blood_⌋,* it will pursue you. ⁷ And I will make the mountain of Seir into a desolation and ruin, and I will cut off from it both he who is crossing over and he who is returning.

³ but Esau I have hated. I have made his* mountain ranges a desolation, and given his inheritance to the jackals of the desert."

³⁷ The firstborn gave birth to a son, and she called his name Moab. He is the father of Moab until this day.

¹⁵ These are the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau: the chiefs of Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, ¹⁶ Korah, Gatam, and Amalek. These are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Adah.

⁷ Then* they turned back and came to En-Mishpat (that is, Kadesh). And they defeated the whole territory of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were living in Hazazon-Tamar.

²² And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. And Lotan's sister was Timna.

⁸ And Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. ⁹ And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, and go out, fight against Amalek tomorrow. I will be standing on the top of the hill, and the staff of God will be in my hand." ¹⁰ And Joshua did as Moses had said to him to fight with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. ¹¹ And* when Moses raised his hand, Israel would prevail, but when he rested his hand, Amalek would prevail. ¹² But the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it; Aaron and Hur supported his hands, _⌊one on each side_⌋,* and his hands were steady until _⌊sundown_⌋.* ¹³ And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the _⌊edge of the sword_⌋.* ¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in the scroll and _⌊recite it in the hearing of_⌋* Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens." ¹⁵ And Moses built an altar, and he called its name Yahweh Is My Banner. ¹⁶ And he said, "Because a hand was against the throne of Yah,* a war will be for Yahweh with Amalek from generation to generation."

¹⁸ Edom will be a captive; Seir, its enemies, will be a captive, and Israel will be acting _⌊courageously_⌋.* ¹⁹ Someone* from Jacob will rule and will destroy a remnant* from the city." ²⁰ And he looked at Amalek, _⌊uttered_⌋* his oracle, and said, "Amalek is first* of the nations, but his future will be forever ruin."

¹⁷ "Remember what Amalek did to you on the journey when* you went out from Egypt, ¹⁸ that he met you on the journey and attacked you, all those lagging behind you and when you were weary and worn out, and he did not fear God. ¹⁹ _⌊And when_⌋* Yahweh your God gives rest to you from all your enemies from around about you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance to take possession of it, you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; you shall not forget!"

² Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'I have observed what Amalek did to Israel, _⌊how he opposed him_⌋* when he went up from Egypt. ³ So then, go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that is his! You must not spare him, but kill both man and woman, both child and nursing infant, both ox and sheep, both camel and donkey.'" ⁴ Saul summoned the army and mustered them at Telaim; two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. ⁵ Then Saul came up to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the wadi.* ⁶ Saul said to the Kenites, "Go, leave! Withdraw from among the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you with them. You have shown loyal love to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* when they came up from Egypt." So the Kenites left from among the Amalekites. ⁷ Then Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as one goes to Shur which is _⌊east of_⌋* Egypt. ⁸ He captured Agag the king of Amalek alive, but all the people he utterly destroyed with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. ⁹ However, Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and the cattle and the second best of the young fatlings and _⌊all that was valuable_⌋;* they were not willing to utterly destroy them. But all the possessions that were despised or worthless, they utterly destroyed.

¹⁵ Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab; all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.

⁴⁵ When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.

¹ Then* Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

⁸ With them their offspring are established _⌊before them_⌋,* and their descendants before their eyes.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked acting violently and spreading himself out like a luxuriant native tree.

⁷ Concerning Edom, thus says Yahweh of hosts:
"Is there no longer wisdom in Teman? Has counsel become lost from those who understand? Is their wisdom rotting?

²⁰ _⌊Therefore_⌋* hear the plan of Yahweh that he has planned against Edom, and his plans that he has planned against the inhabitants of Teman. _⌊Surely_⌋* they will drag them away, the little ones of the flock. _⌊Surely_⌋* he will cause to be desolated over them their grazing place.

¹³ therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: "so* I will stretch out my hand against Edom and I will cut off from it both human and animal, and I will make it a ruin from Teman and Dedan; they will fall by the sword.

¹² So I will send a fire against Teman and it will devour the citadel fortresses of Bozrah."

⁹ And your warriors will be shattered, O Teman, so that _⌊everyone_⌋* from the mountain of Esau will be cut off because of the slaughter!

³ God came from Teman; the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covers the heavens, and his praise fills the earth.

¹³ Now these are the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These are the sons of Basemath, the wife of Esau. ¹⁴ Now these are the sons of Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, daughter of Zibeon, the wife of Esau: She bore to Esau Jeush, Jalam, and Korah.

²² And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. And Lotan's sister was Timna. ²³ Now these are the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam. ²⁴ Now these are the sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah—he is Anah who found the hot springs in the desert while he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father. ²⁵ Now these are the sons of Anah: Dishon and Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah. ²⁶ Now these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. ²⁷ These are the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. ²⁸ These are the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran. ²⁹ These are the chiefs of the Horites: the chiefs Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, ³⁰ Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.

¹² The Horites previously lived in Seir, but the descendants* of Esau dispossessed them and destroyed them _⌊from among themselves_⌋,* as Israel did with respect to the land of their* possession that Yahweh gave to them.)

¹⁵ _⌊Like this plague_⌋* will be the plague on the horse, the mule, the camel, and the donkey, and every kind of animal in those camps.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose* name was Job. That* man was blameless and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil.

like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years,* it will be for Tyre like the song of the prostitute:

¹⁷ 'These great beasts which are four in number are four kings who will arise from the earth.

⁵ And then a king arose in Jeshurun, at the gathering of the leaders of the people, _⌊united were the tribes of Israel_⌋.*

²⁹ Blessed are you, O Israel. Who is like you, a people who is saved by Yahweh, the shield of your help, and who is the sword of your triumph, and your enemies, they shall fawn before you,* and you shall tread on their backs."

⁴³ These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the _⌊Israelites_⌋:* Bela son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. ⁴⁴ When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah reigned in his place. ⁴⁵ When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. ⁴⁶ When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated the Midianites in the country of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith.* ⁴⁷ When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah reigned in his place. ⁴⁸ When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. ⁴⁹ When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Achbor reigned in his place. ⁵⁰ When Baal-Hanan died, Hadad reigned in his place, and the name of his city was Pai.* And the name of his wife was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred, daughter of Me-Zahab.

⁶ _⌊Yahweh has a sword_⌋;*
it is full of blood. It is covered with* fat, with* the blood of lambs and goats, with* the fat of the kidneys of rams, for _⌊Yahweh has a sacrifice_⌋* in Bozrah and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

¹³ For I have sworn by myself," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "that Bozrah will become as a horror, as a disgrace, as a waste, and as a curse. And all her towns will be _⌊everlasting sites of ruins_⌋."*

²² Look, like an eagle he will go up and he will swoop down, and he will spread out his wings against Bozrah. And the heart of the warriors of Edom will be in that day like the heart of a woman who is in labor.

¹² I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob; I will surely gather together the remainder of Israel. I will set them like sheep of Bozrah. Like a herd in the midst of their pasture they will be in tumult from people.

⁷ For their possessions were _⌊too many to live together_⌋,* so that the land of their sojourning was not able to support them on account of their livestock. ⁸ So Esau dwelled in the hill country of Seir (Esau, that is Edom).

¹⁸ Now these are the sons of Oholibamah, the wife of Esau: the chiefs Jeush, Jalam, and Korah. These are the chiefs born of Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the wife of Esau. ¹⁹ These are the sons of Esau, and these are their chiefs (that is, Edom).

⁸ So now, you yourselves did not send me here, but God put me here as father to Pharaoh and as master of all his household, and a ruler over all the land of Egypt.
