¹ Now Abraham was old, _⌊advanced in age_⌋,* and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in everything. ² And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all he had, "Please put your hand under my thigh ³ that I may make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose midst I am dwelling, ⁴ but that you will go to my land and to my family, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac." ⁵ And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing _⌊to follow_⌋* me to this land—must I then return your son to the land from whence you came?" ⁶ Abraham said to him, "_⌊You must take care_⌋* that you do not return my son there. ⁷ Yahweh, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'to your offspring I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. ⁸ And if the woman is not willing _⌊to follow_⌋* you, then you shall be released from this oath of mine—only you must not return my son there." ⁹ Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and he swore to him concerning this matter. ¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels from his master's camels, and he went with all kinds of his master's good things in his hand. And he arose and went to Aram-Naharaim, to the city of Nahor. ¹¹ And he made the camels kneel outside the city at the well of water, at the time of evening, toward the time the women went out to draw water. ¹² And he said, "O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show loyal love to my master Abraham. ¹³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are going out to draw water. ¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master." ¹⁵ And it happened that before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah—who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham—came out, and her jar was on her shoulder. ¹⁶ Now the girl was very pleasing in appearance. She was a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up. ¹⁷ And the servant ran to meet her. And he said, "Please, let me drink a little of the water from your jar." ¹⁸ And she said, "Drink, my lord." And she quickly lowered her jar in her hand and gave him a drink. ¹⁹ When* she finished giving him a drink she said, "I will also draw water for your camels until they finish drinking." ²⁰ And she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water. And she drew water for all his camels. ²¹ And the man was gazing at her silently to know if Yahweh had made his journey successful or not. ²² And it happened that as the camels finished drinking the man took a gold ring of a half shekel in weight and two bracelets for her arms, ten shekels in weight, ²³ and said, "Please tell me, whose daughter are you? Is there a place at the house of your father for us to spend the night?" ²⁴ And she said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor." ²⁵ Then she said to him, "We have both straw and fodder in abundance, as well as a place to spend the night." ²⁶ And the man knelt down and worshiped Yahweh. ²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother." ²⁸ Then the girl ran and reported these things to the household of her mother. ²⁹ Now Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. And Laban ran out to the man toward the spring. ³⁰ And when he saw the ring and the bracelets on the arms of his sister and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, who said, "Thus the man spoke to me," he went to the man. And behold, he was standing with the camels at the spring. ³¹ And he said, "Come, O blessed one of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? Now I have prepared the house and a place for the camels." ³² And the man came to the house and unloaded the camels. And he gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. ³³ _⌊And food was placed before him_⌋* to eat. And he said, "I will not eat until _⌊I have told my errand_⌋."* And he said, "Speak." ³⁴ And he said, "I am the servant of Abraham. ³⁵ Now Yahweh has blessed my master exceedingly, and he has become great. He has given to him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. ³⁶ And Sarah, the wife of my master, has borne a son to my master after her old age. And he* has given to him all that he has. ³⁷ And my master made me swear, saying, 'Do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I am living. ³⁸ But you shall go to the house of my father, and to my family, and you shall take a wife for my son.' ³⁹ And I said to my master, 'Perhaps the woman will not _⌊follow_⌋* me.' ⁴⁰ And he said to me, 'Yahweh, before whom I have walked, shall send his angel with you and will make your journey successful. And you shall take a wife for my son from my family, and from the house of my father. ⁴¹ Then you shall be released from my oath, when you come to my family. And if they will not give a woman to you, then you will be released from my oath.' ⁴² Then today I came to the spring, and I said, 'O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, _⌊if you would please make my journey successful_⌋,* upon which I am going. ⁴³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let it be that the young woman who comes out to draw water and to whom I say, "Please give me a little water to drink from your jar," ⁴⁴ let her say to me, "Drink; I will also draw water for your camels," she is the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for the son of my master.' ⁴⁵ I had not yet finished speaking to myself* when, behold, Rebekah was coming out with* her jar on her shoulder. And she went down to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' ⁴⁶ And she hastened and let down her jar _⌊from her shoulder_⌋* and said, 'Drink, and I will give a drink to your camels also.' Then I drank and she gave a drink to the camels also. ⁴⁷ Then I asked her and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. ⁴⁸ And I knelt down and worshiped Yahweh, and I praised Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right way, to take the daughter of the brother of my master for his son. ⁴⁹ So now, _⌊if you are going to deal loyally and truly_⌋* with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me, so that I may turn to the right or to the left."* ⁵⁰ Then Laban and Bethuel answered, and they said, "The matter has gone out from Yahweh; we are not able to speak bad or good to you. ⁵¹ Here is Rebekah before you. Take her and go; let her be a wife for the son of your master as Yahweh has spoken." ⁵² And it happened that when the servant of Abraham heard their words he bowed down to the ground to Yahweh. ⁵³ And the servant brought out silver jewelry and gold jewelry, and garments, and he gave them to Rebekah. And he gave precious gifts to her brother and to her mother. ⁵⁴ And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night. And they got up in the morning, and he said, "Let me go to my master." ⁵⁵ And her brother and her mother said, "Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; after that she may go." ⁵⁶ And he said to them, "Do not delay me. Now, Yahweh has made my journey successful. Let me go. I must go to my master." ⁵⁷ And they said, "Let us call the girl and ask _⌊her opinion_⌋."* ⁵⁸ And they called Rebekah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go." ⁵⁹ So they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and the servant of Abraham and his men. ⁶⁰ And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "You are our sister; may you become countless thousands; and may your offspring take possession of the gate of his enemies." ⁶¹ And Rebekah and her maidservants arose, and they mounted the camels and _⌊followed_⌋* the man. And the servant took Rebekah and left. ⁶² Now Isaac was coming from the direction of Beer-Lahai-Roi. And he was living in the land of the Negev. ⁶³ And Isaac went out to meditate in the field _⌊early in the evening_⌋,* and he lifted up his eyes and saw—behold, camels were coming. ⁶⁴ And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac. And she got down from the camel. ⁶⁵ And she said to the servant, "Who is this man walking around in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "That is my master." And she took her* veil and covered herself. ⁶⁶ And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. ⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah his mother. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after the death of his mother.

² And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing.

² Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

¹¹ Now Abraham and Sarah were old, _⌊advanced in age_⌋;* _⌊the way of women_⌋* had ceased to be for Sarah.

⁵ And Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him.

³⁵ Now Yahweh has blessed my master exceedingly, and he has become great. He has given to him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys.

²⁰ And Isaac was _⌊forty years old_⌋* when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-Aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, as his wife.

²⁵ Because of the God of your father he will help you and by Shaddai* he will bless you with the blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that crouches beneath, blessings of the breasts and the womb.

¹ Now King David had become old, _⌊advanced in years_⌋,* and they covered him with garments, but he was not warm.

¹ Praise Yah!* Blessed is the man who fears Yahweh; he takes great delight in his commands. ² His _⌊descendants_⌋* will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. ³ Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.

²² The blessing of Yahweh makes one rich, and he does not increase sorrow with it.

² Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah; she brought you forth. For I called him _⌊alone_⌋,* but* I blessed him and made him numerous."

³³ But seek first his kingdom and righteousness,* and all these things will be added to you.

⁷ And _⌊they did not have_⌋* a child, because Elizabeth was barren. And they were both advanced _⌊in years_⌋.*

⁹ So then, the ones who have faith are blessed together with Abraham who believed.

³ Blessed is* the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

⁸ For the training of the body is _⌊somewhat_⌋* profitable, but godliness is profitable for everything, because it* holds promise for the present life and for the life to come.

² Then* Abram said, "O Yahweh, my Lord, what will you give me? _⌊I continue to be_⌋* childless, and _⌊my heir_⌋* is Eliezer of Damascus."

⁹ Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and he swore to him concerning this matter. ¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels from his master's camels, and he went with all kinds of his master's good things in his hand. And he arose and went to Aram-Naharaim, to the city of Nahor.

⁴ And Joseph found favor in his eyes and he served him. Then he appointed him* over his house and all that he owned he put into his hand. ⁵ And it happened that from the time he appointed him over his house and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of Yahweh was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. ⁶ And he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and _⌊he did not worry about anything_⌋* except the food that he ate. Now Joseph was _⌊well built and handsome_⌋.*

⁸ But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master _⌊does not worry about_⌋* what is in the house, and everything he owns he has put in my hand. ⁹ He has no greater authority in this house than me, and he has not withheld anything from me except you, since you are his wife. Now how could I do this great wickedness and sin against God?"

¹ Then he commanded the one who was over his household, saying, "Fill the sacks of the men with food as much as they are able to carry, and put each one's money in the mouth of his sack.

²⁹ When _⌊the time of Israel's death drew near_⌋,* he called to his son, to Joseph. And he said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh, that you might vow to deal kindly* and faithfully with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt,

²⁴ And all the officials and mighty warriors, and also all the sons of King David, _⌊pledged allegiance to_⌋* King Solomon.

¹⁷ The elders who lead well must be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor by speaking and teaching.

² Then* the sons of God saw the daughters of humankind, that they were beautiful. And they took for themselves wives from all that they chose.

⁴ The Nephilim were upon the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God went into the daughters of humankind, and they bore children to them.

¹⁵ Canaan fathered Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth, ¹⁶ and the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Girgashites, ¹⁷ the Hivites, the Arkites, the Sinites, ¹⁸ the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were spread abroad. ¹⁹ And the territory of the Canaanites was from Sidon _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Gerar as far as Gaza, and _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

¹⁹ And he blessed him and said,
"Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth.

²² And Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to Yahweh, God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth,

²³ So now, swear to me here by God that you will not deal with me falsely, or with my descendants, or my posterity. According to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall pledge to do with me and with the land where you have dwelled as an alien."

²⁸ And they said, "We see clearly that Yahweh has been with you, so we thought* let there be an oath between us—between us and you—and let us _⌊make_⌋* a covenant with you ²⁹ that you may not do us harm just as we have not touched you, but have only done good to you and sent you away in peace. You are now blessed by Yahweh." ³⁰ So he made a meal for them, and they ate and drank. ³¹ And they arose early in the morning and each one swore to the other,* and Isaac sent them away. And they left him in peace.

³⁴ And when Esau was forty years old he took as wife Judith, daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, daughter of Elon the Hittite. ³⁵ And _⌊they made life bitter_⌋* for Isaac and Rebekah.

⁴⁶ Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I loathe my life because of the Hittite women.* If Jacob takes a wife from Hittite women* like these, from the _⌊native women_⌋,* _⌊what am I living for_⌋?"*

⁸ Then Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan were evil in the eyes of Isaac his father,

⁴⁴ So now, come, let us _⌊make_⌋* a covenant, you and I, and let it be a witness between me and you." ⁴⁵ And Jacob took a stone and set it up as a stone pillar. ⁴⁶ And Jacob said to his kinsmen, "Gather stones." And they took stones and made a pile of stones, and they ate there by the pile of stones. ⁴⁷ And Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha,* but Jacob called it Galeed.* ⁴⁸ Then Laban said, "This pile of stones is a witness between me and you today." Therefore its name is called Galeed,* ⁴⁹ and Mizpah,* because he said, "Yahweh watch between me and you when _⌊we are out of sight of each other_⌋.* ⁵⁰ If you mistreat my daughters, and if you take wives besides my daughters, when there is no man with us, see—God is a witness between me and you." ⁵¹ And Laban said to Jacob, "See, this pile of stones, and see the pillar that I have set up between me and you. ⁵² This pile of stones is a witness, and the pillar is a witness, that I will not pass beyond this pile of stones to you, and that you will not pass beyond this pile of stones and this pillar to me intending harm. ⁵³ May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father* judge between us." Then Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.

²⁵ Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall bring up my bones from here."

⁷ "You shall not _⌊misuse the name of Yahweh your God_⌋,* because Yahweh will not leave unpunished anyone who _⌊misuses his name_⌋.*

¹¹ the oath of Yahweh will be between the two of them concerning whether or not he has reached out his hand to his neighbor's possession, and its owner will accept this, and he will not make restitution.

¹³ " 'And you will be attentive to all that I have said to you, and you will not _⌊profess_⌋* the name of other gods; it will not be heard in your mouth.

¹⁶ and you take from their daughters for your sons, and their daughters prostitute themselves after their gods, and they cause your sons to prostitute themselves after their gods.

¹² and you* shall not swear _⌊falsely_⌋* in my name, and so one of you* profane* the name of your* God; I am Yahweh.

²¹ the priest will make the woman swear an oath of the sworn oath of the curse, the priest will say to the woman, "May Yahweh give you a curse and a sworn oath in the midst of your people with Yahweh making* your hip fall away* and your stomach swollen;

¹³ "You shall fear Yahweh your God, and you shall serve him, and by his name you shall swear.

³ And you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughter to their son; and you shall not take his daughter for your son.* ⁴ For their* sons and daughters will cause your son* to turn away _⌊from following me_⌋,* and so they will serve other gods, and _⌊the anger of Yahweh would be kindled_⌋* against you, and he would quickly destroy you.

²⁰ Yahweh your God, you shall revere him, you shall serve him, and to him you shall cling, and by his name you shall swear.

¹² So then please swear to me by Yahweh, because _⌊I have shown loyalty to you_⌋,* and _⌊you will also show loyalty_⌋* _⌊to my family_⌋.* You must give me a sign of good faith,*

¹⁷ And Jonathan again made David swear an oath, because he loved him; for with the love of his soul he loved him.

¹⁵ Then Hezekiah prayed before the face of Yahweh and said, "O Yahweh, God of Israel who lives above the cherubim. You are God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the world; you have made the heavens and the earth.

¹² Then Huram* said, "Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel, who has made the heavens and the earth, who has given to King David a wise son knowing discretion and understanding, who will build for Yahweh a house and a royal palace for himself.

⁶ "You alone are Yahweh. You alone have made the heavens, the heavens of the heavens, and all of their army, the earth and all that is in it, the waters and all that is in them. You give life to all of them, and the army of the heavens worship you.

²⁵ So I quarreled with them and cursed them and beat some of their men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath by God: "Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.

¹⁵ May you be blessed by Yahweh, who made heaven and earth.

²³ I have sworn by myself; a word that* shall not return has gone forth from my mouth in righteousness: 'Every knee shall kneel down to me; every tongue shall swear.'

¹ Hear this, house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and came out from the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of Yahweh, and _⌊invoke_⌋* the God of Israel, but not in truth and not in righteousness.

¹⁶ Whoever blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of trustworthiness, and the one who swears an oath in the land shall swear by the God of trustworthiness, because the former troubles are forgotten, and they are hidden from my eyes.

² and you swear, '_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,'* in truth, in justice, and in righteousness, then nations will be blessed by him, and in him they will boast."

¹¹ "_⌊Thus_⌋* you shall say to them,
'Gods who did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under these heavens.

¹⁶ _⌊And then_⌋,* if they diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, '_⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋,'* even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will live in the midst of my people.

⁵ and those who bow down on the rooftops to the host of heaven, and those who bow down, swearing to Yahweh but also swearing by Milkom,*

³⁹ A wife is bound for as long a time as her husband lives. But if her husband _⌊dies_⌋*, she is free to marry whomever she wishes, only in the Lord.

¹⁴ Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers, for what participation is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? ¹⁵ And what agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what share does a believer have with an unbeliever? ¹⁶ And what agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, just as God said,
"I will live in* them and will walk about among them, and I will be their God and they will be my people."* ¹⁷ Therefore "come out from their midst and be separate," says the Lord, "and do not touch what is unclean,* and I will welcome you,*

¹⁶ For people swear by what is greater than themselves, and the oath for confirmation is the end of all dispute for them.

²⁵ And Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years after he fathered Terah, and he fathered other sons and daughters.

⁷ And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

²⁰ And it happened that after these things, it was told to Abraham, "Look, Milcah has also borne children to your brother Nahor: ²¹ Uz his firstborn and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram, ²² and Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." ²³ (Now, Bethuel fathered Rebekah). These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, the brother of Abraham.

² Arise, go to Paddan-Aram, to the house of Bethuel, your mother's father, and take for yourself a wife from there, from the daughters of Laban your mother's brother.

⁵⁸ And they called Rebekah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go."

² But if you are refusing to release and you still are keeping hold of them,

¹⁶ Anyone who is clever will act with intelligence, but the fool will display folly.

¹ For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

³⁹ But we are not among those who shrink back to destruction, but among those who have faith to the preservation of our souls.

⁹ By faith he lived in the land of promise as a stranger, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the fellow heirs of the same promise.

¹³ These all died in faith without receiving the promises, but seeing them from a distance and welcoming them, and admitting that they were strangers and temporary residents on the earth. ¹⁴ For those who say such things make clear that they are seeking a homeland. ¹⁵ And if they remember* that land from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. ¹⁶ But now they aspire to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

²⁰ For if, after they* have escaped from the defilements of the world through the knowledge of the Lord* and Savior Jesus Christ, and they are again entangled in these things and succumb to them, the last state has become worse for them than the first. ²¹ For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than having known it, to turn back from the holy commandment that had been delivered to them. ²² The statement of the true proverb has happened to them, "A dog returns to its own vomit,"* and "A sow, after* washing herself, returns* to wallowing in the mud."*

¹ And Yahweh said to Abram, "Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. ² And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. ³ And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you." ⁴ And Abram went out as Yahweh had told him, and Lot went with him. Now Abram _⌊was seventy-five years old_⌋* when he went out from Haran. ⁵ And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot _⌊his nephew_⌋,* and all their possessions that they had gathered, and all the persons that they had acquired in Haran, and they went out to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to the land of Canaan. ⁶ And Abram traveled through the land up to the place of Shechem, to the Oak of Moreh. Now the Canaanites were in the land at that time. ⁷ And Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." And he built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.

¹⁵ for all the land which you see I will give to you, and to your descendants, forever.

¹⁸ On that day Yahweh _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with Abram saying, "To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates river,

⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God."

¹⁶ And he said, "I swear by myself, declares Yahweh, that because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only child, ¹⁷ that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies. ¹⁸ All the nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring, because you have listened to my voice."

³ Dwell as an alien in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham you father. ⁴ And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your descendants all these lands. And all nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring,

²⁴ And Yahweh appeared to him that night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you, and I will bless you and make your descendants numerous for the sake of my servant Abraham."

⁵ And when Yahweh brings you to the land of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites*—which he swore to your ancestors* to give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey—you will perform this service in this month.

²⁰ " 'Look, I am about to send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. ²¹ Be attentive to him and listen to his voice; do not rebel against him, because he will not forgive your transgression, for my name is in him. ²² But if you listen attentively to his voice and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and a foe to your foes. ²³ When my angel goes before you and brings you to the Amorites* and the Hittites* and the Perizzites* and the Canaanites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites,* I will wipe them out.

¹³ Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by yourself, and you told them, 'I will multiply your offspring like the stars of the heavens, and all this land that I promised I will give to your offspring, and they will inherit it forever.'"

² And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites,* the Amorites,* and the Hittites* and the Perizzites,* the Hivites,* and the Jebusites,*

¹⁶ 'Yahweh was unable to bring this people in the land that he swore by an oath, and he slaughtered them in the desert.'

³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

¹¹ 'The men who went up from Egypt, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, will not see the land that I swore with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob because they have not wholly followed me,

⁸ Look, I have set the land _⌊before you_⌋;* go and take possession of the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors,* to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give it to them and to their offspring after them.'

⁴ And Yahweh said to him, "This is the land that I swore to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob, _⌊saying_⌋,* 'To your offspring I will give it.' I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross _⌊into it_⌋."*

⁶ Be strong and courageous, for you will give the people this land as an inheritance that I swore to their ancestors* to give them.

¹ And the angel of Yahweh went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up from Egypt, and I brought you to the land that I had promised to your ancestors.* I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you.

² "Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: Yahweh, the God of the heavens, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth. And he himself has appointed me to build a house for him in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

⁸ I* will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go. I will advise you with my eye upon you.

⁷ The angel of Yahweh encamps around those who fear him, and he rescues them.

²⁴ You will guide me with your advice, and afterward you will take me into honor.*

²⁰ Bless Yahweh, you his angels, you mighty heroes who do his word by _⌊obeying_⌋* the sound of his word.

⁵ _⌊Trust Yahweh_⌋* with all your heart; do not lean toward your own understanding. ⁶ In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will straighten your paths.

⁹ In all their distress, _⌊there was no distress_⌋,* and the messenger of his _⌊presence_⌋* saved them, in his love and compassion he himself redeemed them, and he lifted them up, and he supported them all the days of old.

⁴⁴ And _⌊in the day of those kings_⌋,* the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will _⌊never_⌋* be destroyed, and the kingdom will not be left for another nation,* and it will bring an end to all these kingdoms, but it will stand _⌊forever_⌋.*

⁹ And he said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

⁵ And he did not give him an inheritance in it—not even a footstep*—and he promised to give it* to him for his possession, and to his descendants after him, _⌊although he did not have_⌋** a child.

¹⁴ Are they not all spirits engaged in special service, sent on assignment for the sake of those who are going to inherit salvation?

¹³ And at that hour a great earthquake took place, and a tenth of the city collapsed, and seven thousand _⌊people_⌋* were killed by the earthquake, and the rest became terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

⁴ but that you will go to my land and to my family, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac." ⁵ And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing _⌊to follow_⌋* me to this land—must I then return your son to the land from whence you came?" ⁶ Abraham said to him, "_⌊You must take care_⌋* that you do not return my son there.

⁵ If her father forbids her on the day he hears of it, all her vows or her pledges that she bound on herself will not stand, and Yahweh will forgive her because her father has forgiven her.

⁸ But if on the day her husband hears of it, he forbids her, then he will nullify her vow that she is under, and the rash promise of her lips that she bound on herself; and Yahweh will forgive her.

¹⁷ The men said to her, "We will be released from this oath of yours that you made us swear. ¹⁸ When we come to the land, you must tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you must gather your father and mother, and your brothers, and your whole family to your house. ¹⁹ If anyone goes outside the doors of your house, _⌊they will be responsible for their own death_⌋,* and we will be innocent. Anyone who will be with you in the house, _⌊we will be responsible for their death_⌋* _⌊if a hand is laid on them_⌋.* ²⁰ But if you report this business of ours, we will be released from your oath that you made us swear."

²⁰ This we will do to them: we will let them live so that wrath will not be on us because of the oath we swore to them."

³² and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

² So he said, "Men—brothers and fathers—listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham while he* was in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran,

² And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all he had, "Please put your hand under my thigh

³¹ And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot, the son of Haran, _⌊his grandson_⌋,* and Sarai his daughter-in-law, the wife of Abram his son, and went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. And they went to Haran, and they settled there.

⁴³ Now then, my son, listen to my voice; arise and flee to Haran to Laban my brother.

¹ And Jacob _⌊continued his journey_⌋* and went to the land of the Easterners.*

⁴ And Jacob said to them, "My brothers, where are you from?" And they said, "We are from Haran." ⁵ And he said to them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him."

²² And the chief of the prison put all the prisoners that were in the prison into the hand of Joseph. And everything that was done there, he was the one who did it. ²³ The chief of the prison _⌊did not worry about_⌋* anything in his* hand, since Yahweh was with him. And whatever he did Yahweh made it successful.

⁸ And _⌊the anger of Yahweh was kindled_⌋* against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim, the king of Aram Naharaim; and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. ⁹ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up a deliverer for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* who delivered them, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. ¹⁰ And the spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and _⌊he prevailed over_⌋* Cushan-Rishathaim.

⁶ And when the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* saw that they made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* sent one thousand talents of silver to hire for themselves horses and chariots from Aram-Naharaim, Aram-Maacah, and Zobah.

⁹ Parthians and Medes and Elamites and those residing in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,*

¹³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are going out to draw water. ¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master." ¹⁵ And it happened that before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah—who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham—came out, and her jar was on her shoulder. ¹⁶ Now the girl was very pleasing in appearance. She was a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up. ¹⁷ And the servant ran to meet her. And he said, "Please, let me drink a little of the water from your jar." ¹⁸ And she said, "Drink, my lord." And she quickly lowered her jar in her hand and gave him a drink. ¹⁹ When* she finished giving him a drink she said, "I will also draw water for your camels until they finish drinking." ²⁰ And she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water. And she drew water for all his camels.

¹³ But he said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail, and the flocks and the cattle which are nursing are a concern to me. Now if they drove them hard for a day all the flocks would die. ¹⁴ Let my lord pass on before his servant and I will move along slowly at the pace* of the livestock that are ahead of me, and at the pace* of the children until I come to my lord in Seir."

¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.*

¹¹ They were going up the ascent of the town when they found young women going out to draw water. They said to them, "Is there the seer here?"

¹⁰ The righteous knows the life* of his animal, but the compassion* of the wicked is cruel.

⁷ A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me water* to drink."

¹ After these things the word of Yahweh came* to Abram in a vision, saying: "Do not be afraid, Abram; I am your shield, and your reward shall be very great."

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you. ⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God."

²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother."

⁴² Then today I came to the spring, and I said, 'O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, _⌊if you would please make my journey successful_⌋,* upon which I am going.

⁴⁸ And I knelt down and worshiped Yahweh, and I praised Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right way, to take the daughter of the brother of my master for his son.

¹⁰ Then you must take it to your father and he will eat it so that he may bless you before his death."

²⁰ Then Isaac said to his son, "_⌊How_⌋* did you find it so quickly, my son?" And he said, "Because Yahweh your God _⌊caused me to find it_⌋."*

¹³ And behold, Yahweh was standing beside him,* and he said, "I am Yahweh, the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. The ground on which you were sleeping I will give to you and to your descendants.

⁴² If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac had not been with me, indeed now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God saw my misery and the labor of my hands and rebuked you last night."

⁹ Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your family, and I will deal well with you.'

¹⁴ And may El-Shaddai* grant you compassion before the man that he may release your other brother to you and Benjamin. As for me, if I am bereaved, I am bereaved."

⁶ And he said, "I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face because he was afraid of looking at God.

¹⁵ And God said again to Moses, "So you must say to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* 'Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,* the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is my remembrance from generation to generation.'

³⁶ It happened at the offering of the evening oblation, Elijah the prophet went near, and he said, "O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel; let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and that I have done all of these things by your words.

¹⁴ He took Elijah's cloak that had fallen from upon him and struck the water. Then he said, "Where is Yahweh, the God of Elijah?" So he also struck the water, and it divided _⌊in two_⌋,* and Elisha crossed over.

¹¹ O Lord, please let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight to revere in your name. Please, let your servant be successful this day and give him compassion before this man."
I was cupbearer for the king.

⁴ Then the king said to me, "What is your request?" So I prayed to the God of the heavens.

⁵ _⌊Commit to_⌋* Yahweh your way; Trust also on him and he will act.

¹⁶ Let your work be visible to your servants, and your majesty to their children. ¹⁷ And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish for us the work of our hands, yes, the work of our hands, establish it.

²⁵ O Yahweh, please save; O Yahweh, please grant success.

¹¹ And he made the camels kneel outside the city at the well of water, at the time of evening, toward the time the women went out to draw water.

⁴³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let it be that the young woman who comes out to draw water and to whom I say, "Please give me a little water to drink from your jar,"

⁹ While he was speaking with them, Rachel came with the sheep which belonged to her father, for she was pasturing them. ¹⁰ And it happened that, when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother, Jacob drew near and rolled away the stone from the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother.

¹¹ At the sound of those dividing* the sheep among the watering places, there they will recount the righteous deeds of Yahweh, the righteous deeds for his warriors* in Israel. Then the people of Yahweh went down to the gates.

⁸ And he said, "O Yahweh God, how shall I know that I will possess it?"

⁴⁴ let her say to me, "Drink; I will also draw water for your camels," she is the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for the son of my master.'

¹ And Moses answered, and he said, "And if they do not believe me and they do not listen to my voice, but they say, 'Yahweh did not appear to you?'" ² And Yahweh said to him, "What is this in your hand?" And he said, "A staff." ³ And he said, "Throw it onto the ground." And he threw it onto the ground, and it became a snake, and Moses fled from it. ⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Reach out your hand and grasp it by its tail"—" (And he reached out his hand and grabbed it, and it became a staff in his palm.)— ⁵ "so that they may believe that Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* appeared to you, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." ⁶ And Yahweh said to him again, "Put your hand into the fold of your garment." And he put his hand into the fold of his garment, and he took it out, and, _⌊to his surprise_⌋,* his hand was afflicted with a skin disease, like snow. ⁷ And he said, "Return your hand to the fold of your garment." And he returned his hand to the fold of his garment, and he took it out from the fold of his garment, and, _⌊to his surprise_⌋,* it was restored like the rest of his body. ⁸ "_⌊And_⌋* if they do not believe you and they will not listen to the voice of the former sign, then they will believe the voice of the latter sign. ⁹ _⌊And_⌋* if they also do not believe the second of these signs and they will not listen to your voice, then you must take water from the Nile and pour it onto the dry ground, and the water that you take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground."

¹⁷ And he* said to him, "Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, _⌊show me a sign_⌋* that you are speaking with me.

³⁷ I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and all of the ground is dry, I will know that you will deliver Israel by my hand, just as you have said."

¹³ When Gideon came, a man was recounting a dream* to his friend, and he said, "Behold, _⌊I had a dream_⌋;* a round loaf of barley bread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came up to the tent, it struck it, and it fell and turned it upside down so that the tent fell." ¹⁴ His friend answered him and said, "This cannot be anything except the sword of Gideon son of Jehoash, a man of Israel; God has given Midian and the entire camp into his hand." ¹⁵ When Gideon heard the recounting of the dream* and its interpretation, he bowed down and returned to the camp of Israel; and he said, "Get up, for Yahweh has given the camp of Midian into your hand."

⁵ And they said to him, "Please inquire of God that we may know whether our journey that we are going on will be successful."

⁷ So then, _⌊prepare_⌋* one new utility cart and two milking cows that have never had a yoke on them, and you must harness the cows to the utility cart and then turn their calves from following them to their stall. ⁸ And you must take the ark of Yahweh and place it on the utility cart with the gold objects that you are returning to him as a guilt offering. You must place them in the container* beside the ark and then send it off so that it goes away. ⁹ You must watch; if it goes up by the way of its territory to Beth Shemesh, he has caused this great disaster to come on us. But if not, then we will know his hand has not struck us; it was by chance that this happened to us.

² As you go from with me _⌊today_⌋,* you will find two men near the burial site of Rachel in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will say to you, 'The female donkeys that you went to search for have been found.' Now look, your father _⌊is no longer concerned about_⌋* the female donkeys and has begun worrying about you,* saying, 'What should I do about my son?' ³ Then you will go on from there and further you will come to the oak of Tabor. There three men will meet you, who are going up to God at Bethel. One will be carrying three male kid goats, one will be carrying three loaves of bread, and one will be carrying a skin of wine. ⁴ _⌊They will ask how you are doing_⌋* and will give you two loaves, which you will take from their hand. ⁵ After this, you will come to the Gibeah of God,* where there are sentries* of the Philistines. _⌊Just as you enter_⌋* the town there, you will meet a procession of prophets coming down from the high place, with harp, tambourine, flute, and zither before them, and they will be prophesying. ⁶ Then the Spirit of Yahweh will rush upon you,* and you will prophesy with them; and you will turn into _⌊a different person_⌋.* ⁷ When these signs come to you, do for yourself what your hand finds to do, for God will be with you. ⁸ Then you will go down before me to Gilgal. Look, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings _⌊and to make_⌋* fellowship offerings. You must wait seven days until I come to you. Then I will let you know what you should do." ⁹ _⌊Just as he turned_⌋* his shoulder to depart from Samuel, God _⌊changed his_⌋* heart. And all these signs were fulfilled on that day. ¹⁰ When they went from there to Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him,* and he prophesied among them.

⁸ Then Jonathan said, "Look, we are about to go over to the men; and we will show ourselves to them. ⁹ If they say to us: 'Wait until we reach you,' _⌊then we will stand as we are_⌋* and not go up to them. ¹⁰ But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us."

⁷ If he says 'Good,' it will mean peace for your servant; but if he is very angry, know that _⌊he has decided to do me harm_⌋.*

²⁴ _⌊And it shall be_⌋* that when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then pay attention, for then Yahweh has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines."

⁹ Then Joab said to Amasa, "Is it peace, O you my brother?" Then the right hand of Joab took hold of the beard of Amasa as if to kiss him.

⁸ Hezekiah said to Isaiah, "What is the sign that Yahweh will heal me that I shall go up on the third day to the temple of Yahweh?" ⁹ Isaiah said, "This is the sign for you from Yahweh that Yahweh will do the thing that he has promised: Shall the shadow advance ten steps or shall it return ten steps?" ¹⁰ Hezekiah answered, "It is easy for the shadow to lengthen ten steps. No, but let the shadow return backwards ten steps." ¹¹ Isaiah the prophet called to Yahweh, and he brought back the shadow on the steps where it had gone down on the steps of Ahaz, backwards ten steps.

¹⁴ A house and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but from Yahweh comes a woman* who is prudent.

¹¹ "Ask for a sign for yourself from Yahweh God; make it deep as Sheol or make it high as above."

¹⁰ always asking in my prayers if somehow now at last I may succeed to come to you in the will of God.

²⁷ Now* these are the generations* of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot.

²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of the wife of Abram was Sarai, and the name of the wife of Nahor was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

¹⁴ Then Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder. And he sent her away with the child, and she went, wandering about in the wilderness, in Beersheba.

²⁴ And she said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor."

⁴⁵ I had not yet finished speaking to myself* when, behold, Rebekah was coming out with* her jar on her shoulder. And she went down to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.'

⁹ While he was speaking with them, Rachel came with the sheep which belonged to her father, for she was pasturing them.

³⁶ Then Gideon said to God, "In order to see that you will deliver Israel by my hand, just as you have said, ³⁷ I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and all of the ground is dry, I will know that you will deliver Israel by my hand, just as you have said." ³⁸ And it was so. He arose early the next day and squeezed the fleece, and he wrung out dew from the fleece, a full drinking bowl of water. ³⁹ And Gideon said to God, "_⌊Do not let your anger burn_⌋* against me; let me speak once more. Please let me test once more with the fleece; let the fleece be dry, and let there be dew on the ground." ⁴⁰ And God did so that night; only the fleece was dry, and dew was on all the ground.

² And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, "Please let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after someone in whose eyes I may find favor." And she said to her, "Go, my daughter."

¹⁷ So she gleaned in the field until the evening and she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.

¹⁵ The eyes of Yahweh are toward the righteous, and his ears toward their cry for help.

² O you who hear prayer, to you all flesh will come.

¹⁸ Yahweh is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. ¹⁹ He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry for help, and saves them.

²⁷ She looks after the ways of her household, and the bread of idleness she will not eat.

⁹ Then you shall call, and Yahweh himself will answer. You shall cry for help, and he will say, 'Here I am!' If you remove from among you the yoke, the _⌊finger-pointing_⌋* and _⌊evil speech_⌋,*

²⁴ And this will happen: before they call, I myself will answer; while still they are speaking, I myself will hear.

²⁰ Now I was still speaking and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh my God, on behalf _⌊of the holy mountain of my God_⌋.* ²¹ And I was still speaking in prayer, and the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision _⌊previously_⌋,* _⌊in my weariness touched me_⌋* at the time of the evening offering. ²² And he instructed me and he spoke with me and he said, "Daniel I have now come out* to teach you understanding. ²³ At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out, and now I have come to declare* it, for you are highly esteemed, and so consider the word and understand the vision.

¹ Now Adam knew* Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain. And she said, "I have given birth to a man with the help of Yahweh."

⁷ When the men of the place asked concerning his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "my wife," thinking* "the men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for _⌊she was beautiful_⌋."*

⁶ And he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and _⌊he did not worry about anything_⌋* except the food that he ate. Now Joseph was _⌊well built and handsome_⌋.*

¹⁷ Now kill every male among the little children, and kill every woman who has _⌊had sexual intercourse with a man_⌋.* ¹⁸ But all the females who have not _⌊had sexual intercourse with a man_⌋,* keep alive for yourselves.

² I was asleep but* my heart was awake. A sound! My beloved knocking!* "Open to me, my sister, my beloved, my dove, my perfect one! For my head is full of dew, _⌊my hair drenched from the moist night air_⌋."*

¹ And there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine which was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech, king of the Philistines, to Gerar. ² And Yahweh appeared to him and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land which I will show to you. ³ Dwell as an alien in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham you father. ⁴ And I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your descendants all these lands. And all nations of the earth will be blessed through your offspring, ⁵ because Abraham listened to my voice and kept my charge: my commandments, my statutes, and my laws." ⁶ So Isaac settled in Gerar. ⁷ When the men of the place asked concerning his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "my wife," thinking* "the men of the place will kill me on account of Rebekah, for _⌊she was beautiful_⌋."* ⁸ And it happened that, _⌊when he had been there a long time_⌋,* Abimelech the king of the Philistines looked through the window, and saw—behold—Isaac was fondling Rebekah his wife. ⁹ And Abimelech called Isaac* and said, "Surely she is your wife. Now why did you say 'She is my sister'?" And Isaac said to him, "Because I thought I would die on account of her." ¹⁰ And Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have slept with your wife! Then you would have brought guilt upon us!" ¹¹ Then Abimelech instructed all the people, saying, "The one who touches this man or his wife shall certainly die." ¹² And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in that same year a hundredfold, and Yahweh blessed him. ¹³ And the man _⌊became wealthier and wealthier_⌋* until he was exceedingly wealthy. ¹⁴ And he possessed sheep and cattle and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him. ¹⁵ And the Philistines stopped up all the wells that the servants of his father had dug in the days of Abraham his father. They filled them with earth. ¹⁶ And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you have become much too powerful for us." ¹⁷ So Isaac departed from there and camped in the valley of Gerar, and settled there. ¹⁸ And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after the death of Abraham. And he gave* to them _⌊the same names_⌋* which his father had given* them. ¹⁹ And when the servants of Isaac dug in the valley, they found a well of fresh water there. ²⁰ Then the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac, saying, "The water is ours." And he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him. ²¹ And they dug another well, and they quarreled over it also. And he called its name Sitnah. ²² Then he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. And he called its name Rehoboth, and said, "Now Yahweh has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land." ²³ And from there he went up to Beersheba. ²⁴ And Yahweh appeared to him that night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you, and I will bless you and make your descendants numerous for the sake of my servant Abraham." ²⁵ And he built an altar there and called on the name of Yahweh. And he pitched his tent there, and the servants of Isaac dug a well there. ²⁶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his friend and Phicol his army commander. ²⁷ And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me? You hate me and sent me away from you." ²⁸ And they said, "We see clearly that Yahweh has been with you, so we thought* let there be an oath between us—between us and you—and let us _⌊make_⌋* a covenant with you ²⁹ that you may not do us harm just as we have not touched you, but have only done good to you and sent you away in peace. You are now blessed by Yahweh." ³⁰ So he made a meal for them, and they ate and drank. ³¹ And they arose early in the morning and each one swore to the other,* and Isaac sent them away. And they left him in peace. ³² And it happened that on that same day the servants of Isaac came and told him about the well that they had dug. And they said, "We have found water!" ³³ And he called it Sheba. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba unto this day.

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath and came to the gate of the city. There was a widow woman gathering wood, so he called to her, and he said, "Please bring a little water for me in a vessel so that I can drink."

¹⁴ _⌊When you happen to meet_⌋* the thirsty, bring water. Inhabitants of the land of Tema came to meet the fugitive with his bread.

²⁵ And there will be streams on every high mountain and elevated hill, watercourses of water, on a day of great slaughter, when towers fall.

⁶ Then the lame shall leap like the deer, and the tongue of the dumb shall sing for joy, for waters shall break forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. ⁷ And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. Her resting place is in a settlement of jackals; the grass shall become like reeds* and rushes.*

¹⁷ The poor and the needy are seeking water and there is none; their tongue is dried up with thirst. I, Yahweh, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. ¹⁸ I will open rivers on the barren heights and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness like a pool of water and the land of dryness like springs of water.

¹⁰ They shall not be hungry or thirsty, and heat and sun shall not strike them, for he who takes pity on them will lead them, and he will guide them to springs of water.

⁹ So the Samaritan woman said to him, "How do you, being a Jew, ask from me water* to drink, since I* am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master."

²⁶ She opens her mouth with wisdom, and instruction of kindness is upon her tongue.

⁸ And finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, showing mutual affection, compassionate, humble,

⁸ Above all, keep* your love for one another constant, because love covers a large number of sins. ⁹ Be hospitable to one another without complaining.

⁴⁵ I had not yet finished speaking to myself* when, behold, Rebekah was coming out with* her jar on her shoulder. And she went down to the spring and drew water. And I said to her, 'Please give me a drink.' ⁴⁶ And she hastened and let down her jar _⌊from her shoulder_⌋* and said, 'Drink, and I will give a drink to your camels also.' Then I drank and she gave a drink to the camels also.

⁹ Be hospitable to one another without complaining.

¹² And he said, "O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show loyal love to my master Abraham.

⁵⁶ And he said to them, "Do not delay me. Now, Yahweh has made my journey successful. Let me go. I must go to my master."

¹⁸ Then King David went and sat before Yahweh and said, "Who am I, my lord Yahweh, and what is my house that you have brought me up to _⌊this place_⌋?* ¹⁹ Still, this was _⌊insignificant_⌋* in your eyes, my lord Yahweh, and also you have spoken about the house of your servant from afar, and this may be the teaching of humans, my lord Yahweh. ²⁰ _⌊What more can David say to you_⌋?* You know your servant, my lord Yahweh.

¹ Of David, when he _⌊pretended to be crazy_⌋* in front of Abimelech* so that he drove him out, and so he departed.*
I will bless Yahweh at all times; his praise shall be in my mouth continually. ² My soul makes its boast in Yahweh; let the humble hear and be glad. ³ Magnify Yahweh with me, and let us exalt his name together. ⁴ I sought Yahweh and he answered me, and from all my terrors he delivered me. ⁵ They looked to him and were radiant, and their faces shall not be ashamed.* ⁶ This poor man called and Yahweh heard, and saved him from all his troubles.

¹ Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loyal love is forever.

⁸ Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love, and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,

¹⁵ Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind,

⁴³ Whoever is wise, then let him observe these things, and let them consider Yahweh's acts of loyal love.

¹ I love him, because Yahweh has heard _⌊the voice of my supplications_⌋.* ² Because he has inclined his ear to me, I will call _⌊all my days_⌋.* ³ The ropes of death encircled me, and the distresses of Sheol found me. I found trouble and grief. ⁴ Then I called on the name of Yahweh: "O Yahweh, please save my life!" ⁵ Gracious is Yahweh and righteous, and our God is merciful. ⁶ Yahweh watches over the simple. I was brought low, but he gave me victory. ⁷ Return, O my soul, to your repose, for Yahweh has dealt bountifully with you.

¹⁹ But Mary treasured up all these words, pondering them* in her heart.

⁵¹ And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was submitting to them. And his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

¹⁵ "My lord, hear me. A piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver—what is that between me and you? Bury your dead." ¹⁶ Then Abraham listened to Ephron, and Abraham weighed for Ephron the silver that he had named* in the hearing of the Hittites:* four hundred shekels of silver _⌊at the merchants' current rate_⌋.*

³⁰ And when he saw the ring and the bracelets on the arms of his sister and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, who said, "Thus the man spoke to me," he went to the man. And behold, he was standing with the camels at the spring.

⁴⁷ Then I asked her and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' And I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms.

² And Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring it to me." ³ And all the people took off the rings of gold that were on their ears and brought it to Aaron.

¹ And it happened, on the third day, and Esther put on royal clothes, and she stood in the inner courtyard of the _⌊king's palace_⌋,* opposite the _⌊king's palace_⌋;* the king was sitting on his royal throne in the _⌊throne room_⌋* opposite the doorway of the palace.

¹⁹ the pendants and the bracelets and the veils, ²⁰ the headdresses and the armlets and the sashes, and the _⌊perfume boxes_⌋* and the amulets, ²¹ the signet rings and the nose rings, ²² the festal robes and the mantles, and the cloaks and the handbags, ²³ and the mirrors and the linen garments, and the turbans and the wraps.

³² Can a young woman forget her ornaments?* Or a bride her sashes? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

¹¹ And I adorned you with ornaments,* and I put a bracelet on your arms and a necklace on your neck. ¹² And I put an ornamental ring on your nose and earrings on your ears and a _⌊beautiful crown_⌋* on your head.

⁹ Likewise also the women should adorn themselves in appropriate clothing, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold jewelry or pearls or expensive clothing, ¹⁰ but with good deeds which are fitting for women who profess godliness.

³ Let your* adornment not be the external kind, braiding hair and putting on gold jewelry or putting on fine clothing,

²⁰ And it happened that after these things, it was told to Abraham, "Look, Milcah has also borne children to your brother Nahor:

²³ (Now, Bethuel fathered Rebekah). These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, the brother of Abraham.

¹⁵ And it happened that before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah—who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham—came out, and her jar was on her shoulder.

⁴ Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree. ⁵ And let me bring a piece of bread, then* refresh _⌊yourselves_⌋.* Afterward you can pass on, _⌊once_⌋* you have passed by with your servant." Then they said, "Do so as you have said." ⁶ Then* Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and he said, "Quickly—make three seahs of fine flour for kneading and make bread cakes!" ⁷ And Abraham ran to the cattle and took a _⌊calf_⌋,* tender and good, and gave it to the servant, and he made haste to prepare it. ⁸ Then he took curds and milk, and the calf which he prepared, and set it before them. And he was standing by them under the tree while* they ate.

¹⁹ There is both straw and fodder for our donkeys, and also bread and wine for me, for your servant,* and for the young man who is with your servant; there is no lack of anything." ²⁰ And the old man said, "Peace to you. I will take care of your needs; however, you must not spend the night in the open square." ²¹ So he brought him to his house, and he fed the donkeys; they washed their feet, ate, and drank.

⁸ But* the nobleman plans noble things, and he stands upon noble things.

⁵ And Abraham said to his servants, "You stay here with the donkey, and I and the boy will go up there. We will worship, then we will return to you."

⁵² And it happened that when the servant of Abraham heard their words he bowed down to the ground to Yahweh.

³¹ And the people believed when they heard that Yahweh had attended to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and that he had seen their misery, and they knelt down and they worshiped.

²⁷ you will say, 'It is a Passover sacrifice for Yahweh, who passed over the houses of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in Egypt when he struck Egypt; and he delivered our houses.'" And the people knelt down and they worshiped.

⁸ And Moses hurried and knelt down to the earth and worshiped.

²⁰ And David said to all the assembly, "Bless Yahweh your God!" And all the assembly blessed Yahweh, the God of their ancestors.* And they bowed down and prostrated themselves before Yahweh and the king.

¹⁸ Then Jehoshaphat bowed his face* down to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before Yahweh to worship Yahweh.

³⁰ Then King Hezekiah and the princes commanded the Levites to praise Yahweh with the words of David and Asaph the seer. So they offered praise with joy, and they bowed down and worshiped.

⁶ Then Ezra blessed Yahweh the great God, and all of the people answered, "Amen! Amen!" while lifting their hands. Then they bowed down and worshiped Yahweh with their noses to the ground.

²⁹ All the _⌊healthy ones_⌋* of the earth will eat and worship. Before him all of those descending into the dust will kneel, even he who cannot keep his soul alive.

⁴ All the earth will bow in worship to you, and sing praise to you. They will sing the praise of your name." Selah

⁹ Let the desert dwellers bow down before him, and his enemies lick the dust.

⁶ Come in, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before Yahweh, our maker.

⁶ With what shall I approach Yahweh, and bow down to God on high? Shall I approach him with burnt offerings, with bull calves a year old?

¹⁰ so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and of those on earth and of those under the earth,

²⁶ Then* he said,
"Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Shem, and let Canaan be a slave to them.

⁸ Then Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there not be quarreling between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds, for we men are brothers.

²⁰ And blessed be God Most High who delivered your enemies into your hand."
And he* gave to him a tenth of everything.

⁴ but that you will go to my land and to my family, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac."

²¹ And the man was gazing at her silently to know if Yahweh had made his journey successful or not.

¹⁰ _⌊I am not worthy_⌋* of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown* your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

¹¹ _⌊And then_⌋* in those days when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers, and he saw their _⌊forced labor_⌋,* and he saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man, one of his brothers.*

¹³ And he went out on the second day, and there were two Hebrew men fighting, and he said to the guilty one, "Why do you strike your neighbor?"

¹⁰ And Jethro said, "Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you from the hand of Egypt and from the hand of Pharaoh—who has delivered the people from under the hand of Egypt.

¹⁴ And the women said to Naomi, "Blessed be Yahweh who today _⌊did not leave you without a redeemer_⌋!* And may his name be renowned in Israel!

³² Then David said to Abigail, "Blessed be Yahweh the God of Israel who has sent you this day to meet me!

³⁹ When David heard that Nabal had died, he said, "Blessed be Yahweh who has vindicated the case of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and he has kept back his servant from evil; but Yahweh has returned the evil of Nabal on his own head." Then David sent and spoke with Abigail to take her for his wife.

²⁸ Then Ahimaaz called and said to the king, "Peace." He bowed down to the king with his face to the ground, and he said, "May Yahweh your God be blessed, who has delivered the men who raised their hand against my lord the king."

¹⁰ Then David blessed Yahweh in the sight of all the assembly, and David said, "Blessed are you, O Yahweh, God of Israel, our father forever and ever! ¹¹ To you, O Yahweh, is the greatness and the power and the splendor and the glory and the strength, for everything in the heavens and in the earth. Yours, O Yahweh, is the kingdom and exaltation over all as head! ¹² And wealth and glory are from you, and you rule over all. And in your hand is power and might. And in your hand is power to make great and to give strength to all. ¹³ And now, our God, we give thanks to you and offer praise to the name of your splendor.

¹⁹ Blessed be the Lord. Daily he loads us with benefits,* the God of our salvation.* Selah

¹⁸ Blessed be Yahweh God, the God of Israel, who alone does wonderful things. ¹⁹ And blessed be his glorious name forever, and may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and Amen.

³ He has remembered his loyal love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation* of our God.

⁵ For Yahweh is good; his loyal love is forever, and his faithfulness is _⌊from generation to generation_⌋.*

¹¹ In the way of wisdom I have instructed you; I have led you in the path of uprightness. ¹² _⌊When you walk_⌋,* your step will not be hampered, and if you run, you will not stumble. ¹³ Seize the instruction! Do not let go! Guard her, for she is your life.

²⁰ In the way of righteousness I walk, in the midst of paths of justice,

²⁰ You will show faithfulness to Jacob, and loyal love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our ancestors* from the days of old.

⁶⁸ "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited to help and _⌊has redeemed_⌋* his people,

¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came about through Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ Now to the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, to the only God, be honor and glory _⌊forever and ever_⌋*. Amen.

⁵⁵ And her brother and her mother said, "Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; after that she may go."

⁶⁷ And Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah his mother. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after the death of his mother.

³³ Then Laban went into Jacob's tent and Leah's tent and the tent of the two female servants and did not find his gods. And he came out of Leah's tent and went into Rachel's tent.

⁶⁰ And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, "You are our sister; may you become countless thousands; and may your offspring take possession of the gate of his enemies."

⁵ And he said to them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" And they said, "We know him."

¹³ And it happened that when Laban heard the message about Jacob, the son of his sister, he ran to meet him. And he embraced him and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

²⁹ that you may not do us harm just as we have not touched you, but have only done good to you and sent you away in peace. You are now blessed by Yahweh."

² And he said to his mother, "The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you, and about which you also pronounced a curse _⌊in my hearing_⌋,* are with me; I took it." And his mother said, "Blessed be my son by Yahweh."

¹⁰ And he said, "You are blessed by Yahweh my daughter. You did better in this last kindness than the first by not going after young men, whether poor or rich.

⁸ The bribe is a stone of magic in the eyes of its owner;* _⌊everywhere_⌋* he will turn, he will prosper.

¹⁶ The gift of a person will open doors for him, and before the great, it gives him access.

⁴ Let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest under the tree.

² And he said, "Behold, my lords, please turn aside into the house of your servant and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you can rise early and go on your way." And they said, "No, but we will spend the night in the square."

²⁴ Then the man brought the men into Joseph's house and he gave them water and washed their feet, and gave fodder to their donkeys.

²¹ So he brought him to his house, and he fed the donkeys; they washed their feet, ate, and drank.

⁴¹ She got up and bowed down with her face to the ground and said, "Here is your female servant, as a slave to wash the feet of my lord's servants."

⁴⁴ And turning toward the woman, he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered into your house. You did not give me water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them* with her hair.

⁴ he got up from the dinner and took off his* outer clothing, and taking a towel, tied it* around himself. ⁵ Then he poured water into the washbasin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them* dry with the towel _⌊which he had tied around himself_⌋.* ⁶ Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will understand after these things." ⁸ Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet _⌊forever_⌋!"* Jesus replied to him, "Unless I wash you, you do not have a share with me." ⁹ Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my* hands and my* head!" ¹⁰ Jesus said to him, "The one who has bathed _⌊only needs_⌋* to wash his* feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all of you." ¹¹ (For he knew the one who would betray him; because of this he said, "Not all of you are clean.") ¹² So when he had washed their feet and taken his outer clothing and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you understand what I have done for you? ¹³ You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and you speak correctly, for I am. ¹⁴ If then I—your* Lord and Teacher—wash your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

¹⁰ being well-attested by good works, if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has helped those who are oppressed, if she has devoted herself to every good work.

¹² From the commandment of his lips, indeed* I have not departed; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily food.

³ "I will not enter into the tent of my house, I will not go up to the couch of my bed, ⁴ I will give no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids, ⁵ until I find a place for Yahweh, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob."

²⁹ A man who is skillful in his work, you shall see: before kings, he will serve; he will not serve before the commoners.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

¹⁴ But whoever drinks of this water which I will give to him will never be thirsty for eternity, but the water which I will give to him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

³¹ In the meanwhile the disciples were asking him, saying, "Rabbi, eat something!"* ³² But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about." ³³ So the disciples began to say* to one another, "No one brought him anything* to eat, did they?"* ³⁴ Jesus said to them, "My food is that I do the will of the one who sent me and complete his work.

⁵ Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ, ⁶ not _⌊while being watched_⌋*, as people pleasers, but as slaves of Christ doing the will of God from the heart, ⁷ serving with goodwill as to the Lord and not to people, ⁸ because you* know that each one of you, whatever good he should do,* this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free.

² And those who have believing masters must not look down on them because they are brothers, but rather they must serve, because those who benefit by their service are believers and dearly loved.

¹⁶ And he dealt well with Abram on account of her, and he had sheep, cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

¹ Now Abraham was old, _⌊advanced in age_⌋,* and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in everything.

¹¹ And it happened that after the death of Abraham God blessed Isaac his son, and Isaac settled at Beer-Lahai-Roi.

¹² And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in that same year a hundredfold, and Yahweh blessed him. ¹³ And the man _⌊became wealthier and wealthier_⌋* until he was exceedingly wealthy. ¹⁴ And he possessed sheep and cattle and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him.

³ Then* his livestock came to be seven thousand sheep and goats and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs* of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and he had very many slaves, and that man was greater than all the people of the east.

¹⁰ Then* Yahweh returned Job's fortune when he prayed to him on behalf of his friends. Thus* Yahweh increased _⌊all that Job had twice as much as before_⌋.* ¹¹ So* all his brothers and all his sisters and all those who had known him _⌊before_⌋* came to him, and they ate bread* with him in his house and showed sympathy to him and comforted him for all the disaster* that Yahweh had brought upon him. Then* each one gave to him one piece of money, and each one gave to him one ornamental ring of gold. ¹² So* Yahweh blessed Job's latter days more than his beginning. _⌊Thus he had_⌋* fourteen thousand sheep and goats and six thousand camels and a thousand pair of oxen and a thousand female donkeys.

³⁵ You also gave me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your humility made me great.

³⁸ And he blesses them and they multiply greatly, and he does not let their cattle become few.

³ Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.

⁴ The reward of humility is the fear of Yahweh— wealth and honor and life.

²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of the wife of Abram was Sarai, and the name of the wife of Nahor was Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. ³⁰ And Sarai was barren; she had no child.

¹⁵ And God said to Abraham, "as for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, for Sarah shall be her name. ¹⁶ And I will bless her; moreover, I give to you from her a son. And I will bless her, and _⌊she shall give rise to nations_⌋.* Kings of peoples shall come* from her." ¹⁷ And Abraham fell upon his face and laughed. And he said in his heart, "_⌊Can a child be born to a man a hundred years old_⌋,* or _⌊can Sarah bear a child at ninety_⌋?"* ¹⁸ And Abraham said to God, "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!" ¹⁹ And God said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear a son for you, and you shall call his name Isaac. And I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant to his offspring after him.

¹⁰ And he* said, "I will certainly return to you _⌊in the spring_⌋,* and look, Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the doorway of the tent, and which was behind him. ¹¹ Now Abraham and Sarah were old, _⌊advanced in age_⌋;* _⌊the way of women_⌋* had ceased to be for Sarah. ¹² So* Sarah laughed to herself saying, "After I am worn out and my husband is old, shall this pleasure be to me?" ¹³ Then Yahweh said to Abraham, "What is this that Sarah laughed, saying, 'Is it indeed true that I will bear a child, now that I have grown old?' ¹⁴ Is anything too difficult for Yahweh? At the appointed time I will return to you _⌊in the spring_⌋* and Sarah shall have a son."

¹ And Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said. And Yahweh did to Sarah as he had promised. ² And she conceived, and Sarah bore to Abraham a son in his old age at the appointed time that God had told him. ³ And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. ⁴ And Abraham circumcised Isaac his son when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. ⁵ And Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac his son was born to him. ⁶ And Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; all who hear will laugh for me." ⁷ And she said, "Who would announce to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne a son to Abraham in his old age."

¹⁰ Then she said to Abraham, "Drive out this slave woman and her son, for the son of this slave woman will not be heir with my son, with Isaac."

⁵ And Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.

¹⁹ And not being weak in faith, he considered his own body as good as dead, * because he* was approximately a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb.

² And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all he had, "Please put your hand under my thigh ³ that I may make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose midst I am dwelling, ⁴ but that you will go to my land and to my family, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac." ⁵ And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing _⌊to follow_⌋* me to this land—must I then return your son to the land from whence you came?" ⁶ Abraham said to him, "_⌊You must take care_⌋* that you do not return my son there. ⁷ Yahweh, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'to your offspring I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. ⁸ And if the woman is not willing _⌊to follow_⌋* you, then you shall be released from this oath of mine—only you must not return my son there." ⁹ Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and he swore to him concerning this matter.

⁴⁶ Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I loathe my life because of the Hittite women.* If Jacob takes a wife from Hittite women* like these, from the _⌊native women_⌋,* _⌊what am I living for_⌋?"*

¹ After finishing these things the officials approached me saying, "The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated from the people of the lands with their detestable things, and from the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites, Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and Amorites. ² For they have taken from their daughters for themselves and their sons. So the holy seed has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands, and the hand of the officials and prefects were foremost in this sin. ³ When I heard this I tore my garment and my robe, and I pulled the hair out from my head and beard, and I sat appalled.

¹ And Yahweh said to Abram, "Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you.

¹⁹ Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole the idols* that belonged to her father.

⁵ And the servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman will not be willing _⌊to follow_⌋* me to this land—must I then return your son to the land from whence you came?"

²² And Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah three hundred years, and fathered sons and daughters.

²⁴ And Enoch walked with God, and he was no more, for God took him.

⁹ These are the generations* of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, without defect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

¹ When* Abram was ninety-nine years old Yahweh appeared to Abram. And he said to him, "I am El-Shaddai;* walk before me and be blameless

⁷ Yahweh, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, 'to your offspring I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph and said,
"The God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked, The God who shepherded me _⌊all my life_⌋* unto this day,

²⁰ " 'Look, I am about to send an angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.

³ You shall keep the charge of Yahweh your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, his commandments, his judgments, and his testimonies, as are written in the law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all that you do and everywhere you turn,

²³ and he said, "O Yahweh, God of Israel, there is no god like you in the heavens above or on the earth beneath, keeping the covenant and the loyal love for your servants who are walking before you with all their heart.

³ "O Yahweh, please remember how I went about before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and remember the good that I have done in your eyes." Then Hezekiah _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.*

³ And so, he is like a tree planted by streams of water that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf also does not wither. Therefore all that he does prospers.

⁸ I have set Yahweh before me always. Because he is at my right hand I will not be shaken.

¹¹ For he will command his angels concerning you, to watch over you in all your ways.

²⁸ Nebuchadnezzar _⌊responded_⌋,* saying, "Blessed be their God, the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who sent his angel* and rescued his servants who trusted in him, and the command of the king they disobeyed, and they gave their bodies so that they did not serve and did not worship any god except their God.

⁸ And I, John, am the one who heard and who saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed these things to me.

¹⁶ "I, Jesus, sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."

⁸ And if the woman is not willing _⌊to follow_⌋* you, then you shall be released from this oath of mine—only you must not return my son there."

¹² _⌊in order for you to enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God_⌋,* and into* his oath that Yahweh your God is _⌊making with you_⌋* _⌊today_⌋,*

¹² And he said, "O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show loyal love to my master Abraham. ¹³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are going out to draw water. ¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master."

³¹ And he said, "Come, O blessed one of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? Now I have prepared the house and a place for the camels."

³ And his master observed that Yahweh was with him, and everything that was in his hand to do Yahweh made successful.

²¹ I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava to humble ourselves before our God in order to seek from him a safe journey for us, our children, and our possessions.

¹⁷ And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish for us the work of our hands, yes, the work of our hands, establish it.

⁷ And when the angel who spoke to him departed, he summoned two of the household slaves and a devout soldier from those who attended him, ⁸ and after he* had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

²² And they said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man—and well spoken of by the whole nation of the Jews—was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear words from you."

²² And Yahweh God fashioned the rib which he had taken from the man* into a woman and brought her to the man.*

³³ The lot will be cast into the lap, but all of its decisions are from Yahweh.

²² He who finds a wife* finds good, and he will obtain favor from Yahweh.

¹⁰ but with good deeds which are fitting for women who profess godliness.

² Do not neglect hospitality, because through this some have received angels as guests without knowing it.

¹³ Now Hannah had been speaking in her heart; her lips were moving, but her voice could not be heard, so Eli considered her to be drunk. ¹⁴ Then Eli said to her, "How long will you behave like someone who is drunk? Put away your wine!" ¹⁵ But Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord. I am a woman _⌊deeply distressed_⌋,* but I have not drunk wine or strong drink. Rather, I have poured out my soul before Yahweh.

²⁷ For you, O Yahweh of hosts, are God of Israel! You have revealed to the ear of your servant, 'I will build a house for you'; therefore your servant _⌊has found courage_⌋* to pray this prayer to you.

¹⁹ Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, pay heed and act! You must not delay _⌊for your sake_⌋,* my God; because _⌊your city and your people are called by your name_⌋."*

²³ At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out, and now I have come to declare* it, for you are highly esteemed, and so consider the word and understand the vision.

⁷ "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will be opened for you.

²⁴ And when they* heard it,* they lifted their voices with one mind to God and said, "Master, you are the one who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all the things in them, ²⁵ the one who said by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of our father David, your servant,
'Why do the nations* rage, and the peoples conspire in vain? ²⁶ The kings of the earth stood opposed, and the rulers assembled together at the same place, against the Lord and against his Christ.'* ²⁷ For in truth both Herod and Pontius Pilate, together with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, assembled together in this city against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed, ²⁸ to do all that your hand and plan* had predestined to take place. ²⁹ And now, Lord, concern yourself with their threats and grant your slaves to speak your message with all boldness, ³⁰ as you extend your hand to heal and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus." ³¹ And when* they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak* the word* of God with boldness. ³² Now the group of those who believed were one heart and soul, and no one said anything of what belonged to him was his own, but all things were theirs in common. ³³ And with great power the apostles were giving testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on them all.

³⁰ And Cornelius said, "_⌊Four days ago at this hour_⌋,* the ninth, I was praying in my house. And behold, a man in shining clothing stood before me

¹² And when he* realized this,* he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John (who is also called Mark), where many people were gathered together and were praying. ¹³ And when* he knocked at the door of the gateway, a female slave _⌊named_⌋* Rhoda came up to answer. ¹⁴ And recognizing Peter's voice, because of her* joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and* announced that Peter was standing at the gate. ¹⁵ But they said to her, "You are out of your mind!" But she kept insisting* it was so. And they kept saying,* "It is his angel!" ¹⁶ But Peter was continuing to knock, and when they* opened the door* they saw him and were astonished. ¹⁷ But motioning to them with his* hand to be silent, he related to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, "Report these things to James and to the brothers," and he departed and* went to another place.

²⁶ And likewise also, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as one ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with unexpressed groanings.

¹⁸ And she said, "Drink, my lord." And she quickly lowered her jar in her hand and gave him a drink. ¹⁹ When* she finished giving him a drink she said, "I will also draw water for your camels until they finish drinking."

²² And it happened that as the camels finished drinking the man took a gold ring of a half shekel in weight and two bracelets for her arms, ten shekels in weight, ²³ and said, "Please tell me, whose daughter are you? Is there a place at the house of your father for us to spend the night?" ²⁴ And she said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor."

⁵³ And the servant brought out silver jewelry and gold jewelry, and garments, and he gave them to Rebekah. And he gave precious gifts to her brother and to her mother.

⁹ Kings' daughters are among your noble ladies. The queen stands at your right hand in gold of Ophir.

¹³ The king's daughter is all glorious within;* her garment is of gold embroidered cloth. ¹⁴ She is brought to the king in colorful garments. The young women behind her, her attendants, are being brought to you.

³ And you shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of Yahweh, and a headband of royalty in the hand of your God. ⁴ It shall no longer be said of you, "Forsaken," and it shall no longer be said of your land, "Desolation!" but _⌊you will_⌋* be called "My Delight Is In Her," and your land, "Married," for Yahweh delights in you, and your land shall be married. ⁵ For as a young man marries a virgin, so shall your sons marry you, and as is the joy of the bridegroom over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you.

¹⁰ And I clothed you with beautiful finished cloth, and I put sandals on you of fine leather, and I bound you in fine linen, and I covered you with costly fabric. ¹¹ And I adorned you with ornaments,* and I put a bracelet on your arms and a necklace on your neck. ¹² And I put an ornamental ring on your nose and earrings on your ears and a _⌊beautiful crown_⌋* on your head. ¹³ And you adorned yourself with gold and silver, and your clothing was fine linen and costly fabric and beautiful finished cloth; you ate finely milled flour and honey and olive oil, and you became exceedingly beautiful; _⌊you were fit to be a queen_⌋.*

²⁶ in order that he might sanctify her by cleansing her* with the washing of water by the word; ²⁷ in order that he might present to himself the church glorious, not having a spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she may be holy and blameless.

²⁶ And the man knelt down and worshiped Yahweh. ²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother."

²⁰ And you warn them of the rules and the instructions, and you make known to them the way in which they must walk and the work that they must do.

¹⁴ that this is God, our God forever and ever. _⌊He himself_⌋* will guide us until death.

⁷ and led them by a straight way to get to a city to inhabit.

¹¹ In the way of wisdom I have instructed you; I have led you in the path of uprightness.

¹⁷ Thus says Yahweh, your redeemer, the holy one of Israel:
"I am Yahweh your God, _⌊who teaches_⌋* you to profit, leads you in the way you should go.

¹⁷ Please let us go through your land. We will not go through a field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the road of the king; we will not turn aside right or left until we have gone through your territory.'"

²⁷ 'Let me cross through your land and _⌊only along the road_⌋* I will go; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left.

¹⁴ And the men said to her, "_⌊Our lives for yours_⌋.* If you do not report this business of ours, _⌊we will show you loyalty and faithfulness_⌋* when Yahweh gives us the land."

³ May loyal love* and truth not forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them upon your heart.

²⁸ Then the girl ran and reported these things to the household of her mother.

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "_⌊Take care_⌋* that you not speak with Jacob, whether good or evil."

²⁹ _⌊It is in my power_⌋* to do harm to you, but the God of your father spoke to me last night saying, '_⌊Take care_⌋* from speaking with Jacob, whether good or evil.'

²² Absalom did not speak with Amnon _⌊either bad or good_⌋,* for Absalom hated Amnon _⌊over the matter when_⌋* he raped Tamar his sister.

²³ This is from Yahweh; it is wonderful in our eyes.

⁴² Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures,
'The stone which the builders rejected, this has become _⌊the cornerstone_⌋.* This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?*

¹¹ This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"*

¹⁷ Therefore if God gave them the same gift as also to us when we* believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to be able to hinder God?"

¹⁵ And Abimelech said, "Here is my land before you; settle _⌊where it pleases you_⌋."*

¹⁰ The king said, "_⌊What do we have in common_⌋,* sons of Zeruiah? If* he curses because Yahweh has said to him 'Curse David,' who can say, "Why have you done this?"

²⁶ And the man knelt down and worshiped Yahweh.

¹ Of David, when he _⌊pretended to be crazy_⌋* in front of Abimelech* so that he drove him out, and so he departed.*
I will bless Yahweh at all times; his praise shall be in my mouth continually. ² My soul makes its boast in Yahweh; let the humble hear and be glad.

²¹ Let them give thanks to Yahweh for his loyal love, and his wonderful deeds for the children of humankind, ²² and let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his works with rejoicing.

¹ I love him, because Yahweh has heard _⌊the voice of my supplications_⌋.* ² Because he has inclined his ear to me, I will call _⌊all my days_⌋.*

¹¹ And when they* came into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and* worshiped him. And opening their treasure boxes, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

²⁵ So it happened that when Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at his* feet, and* worshiped him.* ²⁶ But Peter helped him up, saying, "Get up! I myself am also a man!"

¹⁰ And the servant took ten camels from his master's camels, and he went with all kinds of his master's good things in his hand. And he arose and went to Aram-Naharaim, to the city of Nahor.

²² And it happened that as the camels finished drinking the man took a gold ring of a half shekel in weight and two bracelets for her arms, ten shekels in weight,

²² And a woman will ask from her neighbor and from the woman dwelling as an alien in her house for objects of silver and objects of gold and garments, and you will put them on your sons and on your daughters; and you will plunder Egypt."

² Speak in the ears of the people, and let them ask, a man from his neighbor and a woman from her neighbor, for objects of silver and objects of gold."

³⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did according to the word of Moses, and they asked from the Egyptians for objects of silver and objects of gold and for clothing.

¹³ And of Joseph he said, "Blessed by Yahweh is his land, with* the choice things of heaven, with* dew, and with* the deep lying down beneath, ¹⁴ and with* the choice things of the fruits* of the the sun, and with the choice things of the yield of the _⌊seasons_⌋,* ¹⁵ and with* the finest things of the ancient mountains, and with* the choice things of the _⌊eternal hills_⌋,* ¹⁶ and with* the choice things of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of the one _⌊who dwelt_⌋* in the bush.* Let them come to the head of Joseph, and to the crown of the prince among his brothers.

³ And their father gave to them many gifts of silver, gold, and valuables, with fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, for he was the firstborn.

⁶ And all of their neighbors _⌊helped them_⌋* with objects of silver, gold, possessions, domestic animals, and with valuable gifts—besides all of the freewill offering.

¹³ Your shoots* are an orchard of pomegranates with _⌊choice fruit_⌋,* henna with nard;

² And Hezekiah rejoiced over them and showed them his house of aromatic gum, the silver, gold, spices, good oil, all the house of his weapons, and all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing that Hezekiah had not shown them in his house or in all his dominion.

⁵⁹ So they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and the servant of Abraham and his men.

⁵ Then Isaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-Aram, to Laban the son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau. ⁶ Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-Aram, to take for himself a wife from there, and* he blessed him and instructed him, saying, "You must not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,"

²⁴ Then he sent his brothers away, and when they departed he said to them, "Do not be agitated on the journey."

¹⁹ Now Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, "Please let me run and bring the good news to the king that Yahweh has vindicated him from the hand of his enemies."

²⁷ The sentinel said, "I am seeing that the running of the first is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zakok." The king said, "He is a good man; he will come, for good news." ²⁸ Then Ahimaaz called and said to the king, "Peace." He bowed down to the king with his face to the ground, and he said, "May Yahweh your God be blessed, who has delivered the men who raised their hand against my lord the king."

¹⁰ Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.

³⁸ And the man from who the demons had gone out was begging him to stay with him, but he sent him away, saying, ³⁹ "Return to your home and tell all that God has done for you." And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole town all that Jesus had done for him.

³ And _⌊in the course of time_⌋* Cain brought an offering from the fruit of the ground to Yahweh,

²⁹ " 'And if a man sells _⌊a residential house in a walled city_⌋,* then* it shall be his redemption until completing _⌊a year after his selling_⌋;* its redemption _⌊shall last_⌋* _⌊a year_⌋.*

⁸ And he returned after awhile _⌊to marry her_⌋,* and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion, and there was a swarm of wild honey bees in the body of the lion, and honey.

⁹ Hurry, and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me and do not delay. ¹⁰ You shall settle in the land of Goshen so that you will be near me, you and your children and your grandchildren, and your flocks and your herds and all that you have. ¹¹ And I will provide for you there, because there are still five years of famine—lest you and your household and all that you have become destitute.' ¹² Now behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that _⌊it is I_⌋* who am speaking to you. ¹³ And you must tell my father of all my honor in Egypt and all that you have seen. Now hurry and bring my father here."

⁸ The scroll of this law will not depart from your mouth; you will meditate on it day and night so that _⌊you may observe diligently all that is written_⌋* in it. For then you will succeed in your ways and prosper.

²⁵ Like cold water* upon a weary soul,* so too is good news from a distant place.

¹⁵ I, I myself, I have spoken! Indeed, I have called him. I have brought him, and he will be successful in his way.

¹⁰ Hear, O daughter, and _⌊discern_⌋* and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father's house. ¹¹ Let the king desire your beauty.* Because he is your lord, therefore* bow down to him.

³⁸ So Mary said, "Behold, the Lord's female slave! May it happen to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

⁵⁰ Then Laban and Bethuel answered, and they said, "The matter has gone out from Yahweh; we are not able to speak bad or good to you.

⁸ And Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died. And she was buried below Bethel, under the oak. And its name was called Allon-Bacuth.*

¹² Did I conceive all these people? If I have fathered them,* that you could say to me, 'Carry them* in your lap, just as a foster-father carries the suckling on the land that you swore an oath to their ancestors?'*

⁵ _⌊For never_⌋* did we come with a word of flattery, just as you know, nor with a pretext of greediness (God is witness),

²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of heaven,* and over every animal that moves upon the earth."

¹ And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.

¹⁶ And I will bless her; moreover, I give to you from her a son. And I will bless her, and _⌊she shall give rise to nations_⌋.* Kings of peoples shall come* from her."

¹⁷ that I will certainly bless you and greatly multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and as the sand that is by the shore of the sea. And your offspring will take possession of the gate of his enemies.

³ Now, may El-Shaddai* bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, so that you become an assembly of peoples.

¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph and said,
"The God before whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked, The God who shepherded me _⌊all my life_⌋* unto this day, ¹⁶ The angel who redeemed me from all evil, may he bless the boys. And through them let my name be perpetuated,* and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac. And let them multiply into many in the midst of the earth.

²⁰ So he blessed them that day, saying,
Through you Israel shall pronounce blessing, saying, 'May God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh.'"
So he put Ephraim before Manasseh.

⁴⁶ And you* may pass them on as an inheritance to your* sons* after you* to take possession of as property _⌊for all time_⌋*—you* may let them work. But* as for your* countrymen,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* you* shall not rule with ruthlessness over _⌊one another_⌋.*

May you have strength in Ephrathah and bestow a name in Bethlehem. ¹² And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah from the offspring that Yahweh will give to you from this young woman."

¹⁰ A stream of fire issued forth and flowed _⌊from his presence_⌋;* thousands upon thousands served him and ten thousand upon ten thousand stood before him. The judge sat, and the books were opened.

²⁴ Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cling to his wife, and they shall be as one flesh.

³⁴ May my meditation be pleasing to him. I will be glad in Yahweh.

¹⁵ I will meditate on your precepts and look at* your ways.

⁴⁸ And I will lift up my hands* to your commands, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes.

¹⁷ And to me, how precious* are your thoughts, O God; how vast is their sum. ¹⁸ If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. I awaken, and I am still with you.

⁵ I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your doings.* I muse on the labor of your hands. ⁶ I stretch out my hands to you; my soul longs for you like a dry land. Selah

⁹ And they said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "Here, in the tent." ¹⁰ And he* said, "I will certainly return to you _⌊in the spring_⌋,* and look, Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the doorway of the tent, and which was behind him.

¹ And _⌊Sarah lived_⌋* one hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. ² And Sarah died in Kiriath Arba; that is Hebron, in the land of Canaan.

¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel and said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter."

You must not spare; make your tent cords long and strengthen your pegs, ³ for you will spread out to the right and to the left. And your descendants* will be heir to the nations, and they will inhabit desolate towns. ⁴ You must not fear, for you will not be ashamed, and you must not be confounded, for you will not feel abashed, for you will forget the shame of your youth, and you will no longer remember the disgrace of your widowhood. ⁵ For your husband* is your maker,* his name is Yahweh of hosts; and your redeemer is the holy one of Israel, he is called the God of all of the earth.

¹ I wish that you would put up with me _⌊in something a little foolish_⌋*—but indeed you are putting up with me. ² For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy, because I promised you in marriage to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.

²² —wives to their own husbands as to the Lord, ²³ because the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church (he himself being the Savior of the body). ²⁴ But as the church is subject to Christ, thus also wives should be subject* to their husbands in everything. ²⁵ Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for her; ²⁶ in order that he might sanctify her by cleansing her* with the washing of water by the word; ²⁷ in order that he might present to himself the church glorious, not having a spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she may be holy and blameless. ²⁸ Thus also husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. The one who loves his own wife loves himself. ²⁹ For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as also Christ does the church, ³⁰ because we are members of his body. ³¹ "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."* ³² (This mystery is great, but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.) ³³ Only you also, each one of you, must thus love his own wife as himself, and the wife _⌊must respect_⌋* her husband.

¹³ Now we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you will not grieve as also the rest, who have no hope.

¹⁵ For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who remain until the Lord's coming, will not possibly precede those who have fallen asleep.
