⁹ And Yahweh said to me, 'You shall not attack Moab, and you shall not engage in war* with them, for I will not give you any of his land as a possession; I have given Ar to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.'

¹⁹ When you approach _⌊the border of_⌋* the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* you shall not harass them, and you shall not get involved in battle with them, for I have not given the land of _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* to you as a possession; because I have given it to the descendants* of Lot as a possession.

³ An Ammonite or a Moabite may not come into the assembly of Yahweh; even to the tenth generation none _⌊of his descendants_⌋* may come into the assembly of Yahweh _⌊forever_⌋,*

⁶ And again, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did evil in the eyes of Yahweh. They served the Baals, the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, and the gods of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and Philistines; they abandoned Yahweh and did not serve him. ⁷ And _⌊the anger of Yahweh burned_⌋* against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ⁸ They crushed and oppressed the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in that year; for eighteen years they crushed all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* who were beyond the Jordan, in the land of the Amorites,* which is in Gilead. ⁹ The _⌊Ammonites_⌋* crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim; and Israel was very distressed. ¹⁰ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, saying, "We have sinned against you; we have abandoned our God and served the Baals." ¹¹ And Yahweh said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians,* the Amorites,* from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and from the Philistines?* ¹² And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites,* and the Maonites* oppressed you, you cried out to me, and I delivered you from their hand. ¹³ Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. Therefore I will no longer deliver you. ¹⁴ Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your trouble." ¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Yahweh, "We have sinned; _⌊do to us accordingly as you see fit_⌋;* only please deliver us this day." ¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel. ¹⁷ And the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* were summoned,* and they camped in Gilead. And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* gathered and camped at Mizpah. ¹⁸ The people, the ones commanding Gilead, _⌊said to each other_⌋,* "Who is the man that will begin to fight against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋?* He will be as head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."

⁶ And they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our commander, so that we may make war against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."* ⁷ Jephthah said to the elders, "Did you not shun me and drive me out from the house of my father? Why do you come to me now when you have trouble?" ⁸ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That being so, we have now returned to you, that you may go with us _⌊to fight_⌋* against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and become for us as head of all the inhabitants of Gilead." ⁹ So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me back _⌊to fight_⌋* against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and Yahweh gives them _⌊over to me_⌋,* will I be your head?" ¹⁰ And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "Yahweh will be a _⌊witness_⌋* between us; we will act according to your word." ¹¹ So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh at Mizpah. ¹² And Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* saying, "What is between you and me that you have come to me to make war against my land?" ¹³ And the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* said to Jephthah's messengers, "Because Israel took my land from the Arnon up to the Jabbok and the Jordan when they came up from Egypt; so then, restore it peacefully." ¹⁴ Once again Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* ¹⁵ and he said to him, "Thus says Jephthah, 'Israel did not take the land of Moab or the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* ¹⁶ because when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the wilderness to the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* and went to Kadesh. ¹⁷ Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let us cross through your land," but the king of Edom would not listen. And they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he was not willing. So Israel stayed in Kadesh. ¹⁸ Then they traveled through the wilderness, went around the land of Edom and Moab, and came to _⌊the east_⌋* side of the land of Moab, and they* encamped beyond the Arnon; and they did not go into the territory of Moab because the Arnon was the border of Moab. ¹⁹ Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites,* king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Please let us cross through your land _⌊to our country_⌋.'* ²⁰ But Sihon did not trust Israel to cross through his territory, so Sihon gathered all his people and then encamped at Jahaz; and he made war with Israel. ²¹ And Yahweh, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them; and Israel occupied all the land of the Amorites* inhabiting that land. ²² They occupied all the territory of the Amorites* from the Arnon up to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness up to the Jordan. ²³ So then Yahweh, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites* from before his people Israel, and you want to possess it? ²⁴ Do you not possess what Chemosh your god gave you to possess? Whoever Yahweh our God has driven out before us, we will possess it. ²⁵ So then, are you any better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever quarrel with Israel, or did he ever make war against them? ²⁶ When Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns that are _⌊along the Arnon_⌋,* for three hundred years,* why did you not recover them at that time? ²⁷ I have not sinned against you; but you are the one who is doing wrong by making war against me. _⌊Let Yahweh judge_⌋* today between the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."* ²⁸ But the king of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* did not listen to the message that Jephthah sent to him. ²⁹ And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed through to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ³⁰ And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, and he said, "If indeed you will give the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* into my hand, ³¹ whatever* comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* will be Yahweh's, and I will offer it as a burnt offering." ³² And Jephthah crossed over to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* to make war against them; and Yahweh gave them into his hand. ³³ And he defeated them with a very great blow, from Aroer as far as Minnith, twenty towns,* up to Abel Keramim. And the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* were subdued before the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ³⁴ Jephthah came to Mizpah, to his house, and behold his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and dancing. She was his only child; he did not have a son or daughter except her. ³⁵ And the moment he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, "Ah! My daughter, you have caused me to bow down, and you have become my trouble. _⌊I made an oath_⌋* to Yahweh, and I cannot take it back." ³⁶ She said to him, "My father, _⌊you made an oath_⌋* to Yahweh. Do to me according to what has gone out from your mouth, since Yahweh gave vengeance to you against your enemies, the _⌊Ammonites_⌋."* ³⁷ And she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me: grant me two months so that I may go wander* on the mountains and lament over my virginity, I and my companions. ³⁸ And he said, "Go." He sent her away for two months, and she went with her friends, and she lamented over her virginity on the mountains. ³⁹ At the end of the two months she returned to her father, and he did to her according to his vow; and _⌊she did not sleep with a man_⌋.* And it became an annual custom in Israel ⁴⁰ for the daughters of Israel to go and lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite for forty days of the year.

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you." ² But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition _⌊I will make a treaty_⌋* with you, by gouging out the right eye of each of you, so that I can make it a disgrace for all Israel." ³ So the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Leave us alone for seven days so that we may send messengers in all the territory of Israel, and if there is no deliverer for us, then we will come out to you." ⁴ When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, _⌊they reported these things to_⌋* the people. Then all the people lifted up their voices and wept. ⁵ _⌊Just then_⌋,* Saul was coming from the field behind the cattle. Saul said, "What is the matter with the people, that they are weeping?" So they recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh. ⁶ Then the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and _⌊he became very angry_⌋.* ⁷ So he took a yoke of oxen and cut them into pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, "Whoever is not going out after Saul and after Samuel, so will it be done to his oxen." Then the fear of Yahweh fell on the people and they went out as one man. ⁸ He mustered them at Bezek; the _⌊Israelites_⌋* were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah were thirty thousand. ⁹ They said to the messengers who had come, "Thus you will say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: 'Tomorrow deliverance for you will come _⌊when the sun is hot_⌋.'"* When the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced. ¹⁰ The men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you and you may do to us _⌊whatever seems good to you_⌋."* ¹¹ _⌊And the_⌋* next day Saul placed the people in three divisions. Then they came into the middle of the camp _⌊at the early morning watch_⌋* and struck down _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* until the heat of the day. It happened that the remainder were scattered _⌊so that no two among them remained together_⌋.* ¹² Then the people said to Samuel, "Who is the one who asked, 'Will Saul reign over us?' Give the men to us that we may kill them." ¹³ But Saul said, "No one will be put to death on this day, because _⌊today_⌋* Yahweh has provided deliverance in Israel." ¹⁴ Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal, and let us renew the kingship there." ¹⁵ So all the people went to Gilgal and they made Saul king there before Yahweh in Gilgal. They sacrificed fellowship offerings there before Yahweh. Then Saul rejoiced there greatly along with all the men of Israel.

¹ _⌊Afterwards the king of the Ammonites died_⌋,* and his son Hanun ruled in his place. ² David said, "I will show loyal love with Hanun, the son of Nahash, as his father showed loyal love with me." So David sent to console him concerning his father, by the hand of his servants. And the servants of David came to the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ³ But the commanders of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* said to Hanun their master, "_⌊In your opinion_⌋,* is David honoring your father because he has sent condolences to you? Is it not in order to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it that David sent his servants to you?" ⁴ Then Hanun took the servants of David, and he shaved off half of their beards and cut their garments off in the middle up to their buttocks, then sent them away. ⁵ When they told David, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, "Remain in Jericho until your beards have grown, and then you can return." ⁶ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* saw that they had become odious to David, the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* sent word and hired Aram Beth-Rehob and Aram-Zobah, twenty thousand infantry; and they also hired the king of Maacah, a thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men. ⁷ When David heard, he sent Joab and all the army of mighty warriors. ⁸ The _⌊Ammonites_⌋* came out and _⌊drew up a battle formation_⌋* at the entrance of the gate, but Aram-Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were alone in the open field. ⁹ When Joab saw that _⌊the battle was to be fought on two fronts_⌋,* he chose from all the members of the elite troops of Israel and _⌊lined them up for battle_⌋* to meet Aram. ¹⁰ The rest of the army he placed into the hand of his brother Abishai, who _⌊arranged them in battle lines_⌋* to meet the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ¹¹ Then he said, "If Aram is stronger than I am, you must become my deliverer; but if the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. ¹² Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves for the sake of the people and for the sake of the cities of our God. May Yahweh do what is good in his eyes. ¹³ Joab and all the people who were with him moved forward into the battle against Aram, and they fled from before him. ¹⁴ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* saw that Aram had fled, they fled from before Abishai and entered the city. Then Joab returned from fighting against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and came to Jerusalem. ¹⁵ When the Arameans saw that they were defeated before Israel, they gathered themselves together. ¹⁶ Then Hadadezer sent and brought out the Arameans who were beyond the Euphrates, and they came to Helam. Now Shobach, the commander of the army of Hadadezer, _⌊was at their head_⌋.* ¹⁷ David was told, so he gathered all Israel and crossed over the Jordan and came to Helam. Aram _⌊arranged themselves in battle lines_⌋* to meet David, and they fought with him. ¹⁸ And Aram fled before Israel, and David killed from the Arameans seven hundred chariot teams and forty thousand horsemen. He struck down Shobach, the commander of his army, and he died there. ¹⁹ When all the kings, the servants of Hadadezer, saw that he had been defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them, and Aram was afraid to help the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* any longer.

¹ On that day the book of Moses was read in the hearing of the people and it was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God ² because they did not come to meet the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them in order to curse them—but our God changed the curse into a blessing. ³ So it happened when they heard the law* that they separated all of the foreign people from Israel.

²³ Also in those days I saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. ²⁴ Half of their children spoke Ashdodite and could not speak Judean, but only the tongues of other nations. ²⁵ So I quarreled with them and cursed them and beat some of their men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath by God: "Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. ²⁶ Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in this way? And among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Yet the foreign women made even him sin. ²⁷ Should we listen to you all and do this great evil, acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?" ²⁸ One from the sons of Jehoiada, son of the high priest Eliashib, who was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonote was there. I chased him away from me.

⁴ They say, "Come, let us annihilate them from being a nation, so that the name of Israel will be remembered no more." ⁵ For they have consulted together _⌊with a unified purpose_⌋.* They have made a covenant against you: ⁶ the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, ⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre. ⁸ Assyria also has joined with them. They _⌊provide help_⌋* to the children of Lot. Selah

¹⁴ But they shall _⌊swoop_⌋* upon the Philistine shoulder,* _⌊westward_⌋.* Together they shall plunder the sons of the east. Edom and Moab _⌊will be under their command_⌋,* and the sons of Ammon will be their subjugated people.

⁹ "Therefore, as I live"—a declaration of Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel— "Moab shall be as Sodom, and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* like Gomorrah, a place of weeds and salt pits and a desolation forever. The remnant of my people shall plunder them, and the remainder of my nation shall possess them."
