¹ "If someone slain is found in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you to take possession of it and is lying in the field, and it is not known who _⌊killed him_⌋,* ² then your elders and your judges shall go out and shall measure the distance to the cities that are around the slain one. ³ _⌊And then_⌋* the nearest city to the slain one, the elders of that city shall take a heifer of the herd that has not been worked with in the field, that has not pulled a yoke, ⁴ and the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a _⌊wadi that flows with water all year_⌋* and that has not been plowed and has not been sown; then _⌊there they shall break the neck of the heifer in the wadi_⌋.* ⁵ Then the priests, the descendants* of Levi, shall come near, for Yahweh your God has chosen them to bless in the name of Yahweh, and every legal dispute and every case of assault will be _⌊subject to their ruling_⌋.* ⁶ And all of the elders of that city nearest to the slain person shall wash their hands over the heifer with the broken neck in the wadi.* ⁷ And they shall declare, and they shall say, 'Our hands did not shed this blood, and our eyes did not see what was done. ⁸ Forgive your people, Israel, whom you redeemed, Yahweh, and do not _⌊allow_⌋* the guilt of innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel, and let them be forgiven with regard to blood.' ⁹ And so you shall purge the innocent blood from your midst, because you must do the right thing in the eyes of Yahweh. ¹⁰ "When you go out for battle against your enemies, and Yahweh your God gives them into your hand, and you lead the captives* away, ¹¹ and you see among the captives* a woman beautiful in appearance, and you become attached to her and you want to take her as a wife, ¹² then you shall bring her into your household, and she shall shave her head, and she shall trim her nails. ¹³ And she shall remove the clothing of her captivity from her, and she shall remain in your house, and she shall mourn her father and her mother _⌊a full month_⌋,* and after this _⌊you may have sex with her_⌋,* and you may marry her, and she may _⌊become your wife_⌋.* ¹⁴ And then if you do not take delight in her, then you shall let her go _⌊to do whatever she wants_⌋,* but you shall not treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored* her. ¹⁵ "If a man has two wives, and the one is loved and the other one is disliked and the one loved and the one that is disliked have borne for him sons, if it happens that the firstborn son _⌊belongs to the one that is disliked_⌋,* ¹⁶ nevertheless _⌊it will be the case that_⌋* on the day of bestowing his inheritance upon his sons, he will not be allowed to treat as the firstborn son the son of the beloved wife _⌊in preference to_⌋* the son of the disliked wife, who is the firstborn son. ¹⁷ But he shall acknowledge the firstborn son of the disliked wife _⌊by giving_⌋* him a double portion of _⌊all that he has_⌋,* for he is the firstfruit of his vigor;* to him is the legal claim of the birthright.* ¹⁸ "_⌊If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son_⌋* who _⌊does not listen to_⌋* the voice of his father and to the voice of his mother, and they discipline him, and he does not obey* them, ¹⁹ then his father and his mother shall take hold of him, and they shall bring him out to the elders of his city and to the gate of his _⌊town_⌋,* ²⁰ and they shall say to the elders of his city, 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious; _⌊he does not obey us_⌋,* and he is a glutton and a drunkard.' ²¹ Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones and let him die; and so you shall purge the evil from your midst, and all of Israel will hear, and they will fear. ²² "And _⌊if a man commits a sin punishable by death_⌋,* and so he is put to death and you hang him on a tree, ²³ his dead body shall not hang on the tree, but certainly you shall bury him on that day, for cursed by God is one that is being hung; so you shall not defile your land* that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance."

⁶ You destroy speakers of lies.* _⌊A man of bloodshed_⌋* and deceit Yahweh abhors.

¹² for he who _⌊avenges bloodshed_⌋* remembers them. He does not forget the distressed cry of the afflicted.

¹⁷ A person who is burdened with the blood of _⌊another_⌋,* until death he will flee; do not take hold of him.

²¹ For look! Yahweh is about to come out from his place to punish the iniquity of the inhabitants* of the earth against him, and the earth will disclose her blood and will no longer cover her slain.

⁴ And when the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying* to one another, "Doubtless this man is a murderer whom, although he* was rescued from the sea, Justice* has not permitted to live!"

¹⁸ "You shall appoint judges and officials for you in all your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you throughout your tribes, and you shall render for the people _⌊righteous judgments_⌋.* ¹⁹ You shall not subvert* justice; you shall not _⌊show partiality_⌋;* and you shall not take a bribe, for the bribe makes blind the eyes of the wise and misrepresents the words of the righteous.

³ For rulers are not a cause of terror for a good deed, but for bad conduct. So do you want not to be afraid of authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from it, ⁴ for it is God's servant to you for what is good. But if you do what is bad, be afraid, because it does not bear the sword to no purpose. For it is God's servant, the one who avenges for punishment on the one who does what is bad.

² "This is the decree of the law that Yahweh has commanded, saying, 'Speak to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and let them take to you a red heifer without a physical defect, on which a yoke _⌊has not been placed_⌋.*

¹⁸ Indeed I heard Ephraim pitying themselves, 'You disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like a calf that is not trained. Bring me back and let me return, for you are Yahweh my God.

²⁸ Come to me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. ²⁹ Take my yoke on you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy to carry and my burden is light."

⁸ he humbled himself by* becoming obedient to the point of death, that is, death on a cross.

²¹ For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his footsteps, ²² who did not commit sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth,* ²³ who when he* was reviled, did not revile in return; when* suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly, ²⁴ who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we may die to sins and live to righteousness, by whose wounds you were healed.

¹⁸ For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, in order that he could bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit,

²² Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, ²³ "Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, 'You will bless the _⌊Israelites_⌋:* You will say to them: ²⁴ Yahweh will bless you and keep you; ²⁵ Yahweh will make shine his face on you and be gracious to you; ²⁶ Yahweh will lift up his face upon you, and he will give you peace.' ²⁷ And they will put my name on the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and I will bless them."

⁸ At that time Yahweh set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to stand _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, to serve him and to bless the people in his name until this day.

⁸ "_⌊If a matter is too difficult for you_⌋,* for example disputes between blood and blood,* between legal claim and legal claim* and between assault and assault* and between matters of discernment in your _⌊towns_⌋,* then you shall get up and you shall go to the place that Yahweh your God will choose; ⁹ then you shall go to the priests and the Levites and to the judge who will be in office in those days, and you shall enquire, and they shall announce to you _⌊the verdict_⌋.* ¹⁰ "And _⌊you shall carry out exactly the decision_⌋* that they announced to you from that place that Yahweh will choose, and _⌊you shall diligently observe_⌋* according to all that they instruct you. ¹¹ And so according to _⌊the instruction of the law_⌋* that they teach you and according to the decisions that they say to you, you shall do; you shall not turn from the word that they tell you to the right or to the left. ¹² And the man who treats with contempt* so as not to listen to the priest who is standing to minister on behalf of Yahweh your God or to the judge, that man shall die; so you shall purge the evil from Israel.

⁵ For Yahweh your God has chosen him from among all your tribes to stand to minister in the name of Yahweh, he and his sons _⌊forever_⌋.*

¹⁷ then the two men _⌊to whom the legal dispute pertains_⌋* shall stand _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, _⌊before_⌋* the priests and the judges who are in office in those days.

¹³ The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to consecrate the most holy things. He and his sons were to burn offerings forever before Yahweh to serve him and to bless in his name forever.

⁷ For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge, and they should seek instruction* from his mouth, for he is the messenger of Yahweh of hosts.

³⁰ If I wash myself with soap,* and I cleanse my hands with lye,

¹² Who can perceive his errors? Acquit me from hidden faults.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence, and I will walk about your altar, O Yahweh,

² Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and from my sin cleanse me.

⁷ Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean. Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

¹⁴ Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, the God of my salvation; then my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness.

¹³ Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure, and washed my hands in innocence.

²² For if you wash with natron, and you _⌊use much soap_⌋,* your guilt is sticking as a stain _⌊before_⌋* me," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

²⁴ So Pilate, when he* saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but instead an uproar was developing, took water and* washed his* hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this man. You see to it!"* ²⁵ And all the people answered and* said, "His blood be on us and on our children!"

¹⁰ concerning instead only food and drink and different washings, regulations of outward things imposed until the time of setting things right.

¹⁹ Then the priest will make her swear an oath, and he will say to the woman, "If a man has not slept with you, and if you have not had an impurity affair under your husband, go unpunished from the waters of bitterness that brings this curse. ²⁰ But if you have had an affair under your husband, and if you are defiled and a man other than your husband had intercourse with you," ²¹ the priest will make the woman swear an oath of the sworn oath of the curse, the priest will say to the woman, "May Yahweh give you a curse and a sworn oath in the midst of your people with Yahweh making* your hip fall away* and your stomach swollen; ²² and these waters that bring a curse will go into your intestines to cause your womb to swell and to make your hip fall away."* And the women will say, "Amen. Amen." ²³ " 'And the priests will write these curses on the scroll, and he will wipe them off into the waters of the bitterness. ²⁴ He will make the woman drink the waters of the bitterness that brings* a curse, and the waters of bitterness that bring a curse will go into her. ²⁵ The priest will take the grain offering of jealousy from the hand of the woman, and he will wave the grain offering _⌊before Yahweh_⌋,* and he will present it to the altar; ²⁶ the priest will grasp her memorial offering from the grain offering, and he will turn it into smoke on the altar, and afterward he will make the woman drink the waters. ²⁷ When he has made her drink the waters, it will come about, if she has defiled herself and acted unfaithfully to her husband and the waters of bitterness that bring a curse go into her and her stomach swells and her hip falls away,* the woman will be as a curse in the midst of her people. ²⁸ And if the woman is not defiled, and she is pure, she will go unpunished and be able to conceive children.

⁸ Yahweh has returned on you all the blood of the household of Saul _⌊whom you have supplanted as king_⌋,* and Yahweh has given the kingship into the hand of Absalom your son. Look, you are in disaster for you are a man of blood."

²¹ for what _⌊does he care for_⌋* his house after him, when the number of his months is* cut off? ²² Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since* he himself* judges high ones? ²³ This one dies _⌊in full prosperity_⌋,* _⌊completely_⌋* at ease and secure.

³¹ Who denounces his way to his face? And who repays him for what he has done? ³² When* he is brought to the grave, then* someone stands guard over the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone will follow after him, and _⌊before_⌋* him _⌊they are innumerable_⌋.* ³⁴ So* how will you comfort me with emptiness, when* fraud is left in your answers?"

³ O Yahweh, my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands, ⁴ if I have repaid _⌊my ally_⌋* with harm, or if I have plundered my enemy without cause,

³³ So you will not pollute the land in which you are; because blood pollutes the land, and no atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is poured out on it except with the blood of the one who poured it out. ³⁴ You will not defile the land on which you are living because I am living in the midst of it; I am Yahweh; I am living in the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.'"*

²⁸ When David heard this afterwards, he said: "I and my kingdom are innocent _⌊before Yahweh_⌋* forever for the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

⁴ Also, for the blood of the innocent that he had shed—and he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood—Yahweh was not willing to forgive.

¹⁵ Only you must certainly know that if you put me to death, you will bring on yourselves innocent blood, and on this city and on its inhabitants, for _⌊truly_⌋* Yahweh sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."

³ and they prostituted themselves in Egypt in their childhood; they were prostituting themselves there, and their breasts were fondled, and there they caressed the bosoms of their virginity.

²⁴ And they will come against you with an army chariot and wagon and with a crowd* of peoples; they will set themselves against you from all around with large shield and small shield and helmet. And I will give _⌊before them_⌋* judgment, and they will judge you with their judgments. ²⁵ And I will direct my zeal against you, and they will deal with you in anger; your nose and your ears they will remove, and _⌊those who are left_⌋,* they will fall by the sword, and they will take your sons and your daughters, and _⌊your remnant_⌋* will be consumed by fire.

¹⁴ So they cried out to Yahweh, and they said, "O Yahweh! Please do not let us perish because of this man's life, and _⌊do not make us guilty of innocent blood_⌋,* because you, O Yahweh, did what you wanted."

³⁵ so that upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on the earth from the blood of righteous Abel up to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

¹⁵ who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and who persecuted us, and who are not pleasing to God and are opposed to all people, ¹⁶ hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles in order that they may be saved, so that they always fill up their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the end.*

¹⁸ if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to keep all of his commandments that I am commanding to you _⌊today_⌋* so as to do the right thing in the eyes of Yahweh your God."

¹² then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and they shall give him into the hand of the avenger of blood, and he shall be put to death. ¹³ Your eye shall not take pity on him, and you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, _⌊so that good will be directed toward you_⌋.*

³⁰ Yahweh said to Jehu, "Because you have done well by doing right in my eyes and you have done to the house of Ahab according to all that was in my heart; therefore, sons of the fourth generation will sit for you on the throne of Israel." ³¹ But Jehu was not careful to walk in the law of Yahweh God of Israel with all his heart; he did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam by which he caused Israel to sin.

¹⁰ "When you approach a city to fight against it, _⌊you must offer it peace_⌋.* ¹¹ _⌊And then_⌋* if _⌊they accept your terms of peace_⌋* and _⌊they surrender to you_⌋,* _⌊and then_⌋* all the people _⌊inhabiting it_⌋* shall be forced labor for you, and they shall serve you. ¹² But if they _⌊do not accept your terms of peace_⌋* and they want to make war with you, then you shall lay siege against it.* ¹³ And Yahweh your God will give it into your hand, and you shall kill all its males with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword. ¹⁴ Only the women and the little children and the domestic animals* and all that shall be in the city, all of its spoil you may loot for yourselves, and you may enjoy the spoil of your enemies that Yahweh you God has given to you. ¹⁵ Thus you shall do to all the far* cities from you, which are not from the cities of these nations located _⌊nearby_⌋.* ¹⁶ But from the cities of these peoples that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance, you shall not let anything live that breathes.*

⁴⁴ Yahweh gave them rest on every side, according to all that he had sworn to their ancestors,* and nobody from all their enemies withstood them, for Yahweh had given all their enemies into their hand.

² Then* the sons of God saw the daughters of humankind, that they were beautiful. And they took for themselves wives from all that they chose.

¹⁴ And it happened that as Abram came into Egypt, the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. ¹⁵ And the officials of Pharaoh saw her, and they praised her beauty to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to the house of Pharaoh.

¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel and said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." ¹⁹ Then Laban said, "Better that I give her to you than I give her to another man. Stay with me." ²⁰ And Jacob worked for Rachel seven years, but they were as a few days in his eyes because he loved her.

³ And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke _⌊tenderly_⌋* to the girl.

⁸ And Hamor spoke with them saying, "Shechem my son _⌊is in love with_⌋* your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife.

¹⁸ But all the females who have not _⌊had sexual intercourse with a man_⌋,* keep alive for yourselves.

² He went up and told his father and mother, and he said, "I saw a woman in Timnah from the daughters of the Philistines; so then, take her for me as a wife." ³ But his father and mother said to him, "Is there not a wife among the daughters of your relatives, or among all our* people, that you must take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?" But Samson said to his father, "Take her for me because _⌊she pleases me_⌋."*

²⁵ Do not desire her beauty in your heart; may she not capture you with her eyelashes.

¹⁰ A woman* of excellence,* who will find? For her worth is far more than precious jewels.

³⁰ Charm* is deceit and beauty* is vain;* but a woman who fears Yahweh shall be praised.

⁹ _⌊And then_⌋* on the seventh day he must shave off all his hair—he must shave his head and his beard and _⌊his eyebrows_⌋* and all the rest* of his hair—and he shall wash his garments, and he shall wash his body in the water; thus* he shall be clean.

⁹ " 'If someone dies suddenly and makes the head of his separation* unclean, he will shave off the hair of his head on the day of his cleansing; on the seventh day he will shave it off.

⁶ For if a woman does not cover herself, let her hair be shorn off. But if it is shameful for a woman to have her head* shorn or shaved, let her cover her head.*

²² that you take off, according to your former way of life, the old man, who is being destroyed according to deceitful desires,

¹⁰ Hear, O daughter, and _⌊discern_⌋* and incline your ear, and forget your people and your father's house. ¹¹ Let the king desire your beauty.* Because he is your lord, therefore* bow down to him.

²⁶ "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and furthermore, even his own life, _⌊he cannot be_⌋* my disciple. ²⁷ Whoever does not carry his own cross and _⌊follow_⌋* me _⌊cannot be_⌋* my disciple.

² And Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. And he took her and lay with her and raped her.

⁷ " 'And if a man sells his daughter as a slave woman, she will not go out as male slaves go out. ⁸ If _⌊she does not please her master_⌋* who selected her, he will allow her to be redeemed; he has no authority to sell her to foreign people, since he has dealt treacherously with her. ⁹ And if he selects her for his son, he shall do for her according to the regulations for daughters. ¹⁰ If he takes for himself another, he will not reduce her food, her clothing, or her right of cohabitation. ¹¹ And if he does not do for her these three, she shall go out for nothing; there will not be silver* paid for her.

¹⁹ Then they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and they shall give them to the father of the young woman, for _⌊he defamed an Israelite young woman_⌋,* and _⌊she shall become his wife_⌋;* he will not be allowed _⌊to divorce her_⌋* all his days.

²⁴ then you shall bring out _⌊both of them_⌋* to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them with stones so that they shall die, the young woman because she did not cry out in the town, and the man because* he violated his neighbor's wife; and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

²⁹ then _⌊the man who lay with her_⌋* shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall become _⌊his wife_⌋* _⌊because_⌋* he violated her, and he is not allowed to divorce her _⌊during his lifetime_⌋.*

²⁴ Here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. Please, let me bring them out; do violence to them,* and do to them _⌊whatever you please_⌋.* Do not do this disgraceful thing to this man."

¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel and said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter."

²⁰ And Jacob worked for Rachel seven years, but they were as a few days in his eyes because he loved her.

³⁰ Then he also went in to Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served with him yet another seven years. ³¹ When Yahweh saw that Leah was unloved he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

³³ And she conceived again and gave birth to a son. And she said, "It is because Yahweh has heard that I am unloved that he gave me this son also." And she called his name Simeon.

⁴ _⌊On_⌋* the day Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. ⁵ But to Hannah he would give _⌊a double portion_⌋,* because he loved Hannah, though Yahweh had closed her womb.

¹⁰ And Hosah, from the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (though he was not firstborn, his father appointed him as chief),

¹⁹ And she bore to him sons: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham. ²⁰ And after her he took Maacah the daughter of Absalom, who bore to him Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith. ²¹ And Rehoboam loved Maacah the daughter of Absalom more than all his wives and concubines (for he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters). ²² And Rehoboam appointed Abijah the son of Maacah as chief and crown prince over his brothers, in order to make him king.

³ And their father gave to them many gifts of silver, gold, and valuables, with fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, for he was the firstborn.

²⁹ because those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he should be the firstborn among many brothers.

⁸ Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are right, whatever things are pure, whatever things are pleasing, whatever things are commendable, if there is any excellence of character and if anything praiseworthy, think about these things.

¹⁶ that no one be a sexually immoral or totally worldly person like Esau, who for one meal traded his own birthright. ¹⁷ For you know that also afterwards, when he* wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, because he did not find an occasion for repentance, although he sought it with tears.

⁵ And Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. ⁶ But to the sons of Abraham's concubines Abraham gave gifts. And while he was still living he sent them away eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the east.

³¹ Then Jacob said, "Sell me your birthright _⌊first_⌋."* ³² And Esau said, "Look, I am going to die; now what is this birthright to me?" ³³ Then Jacob said, "Swear to me _⌊first_⌋."* And he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. ³⁴ Then Jacob gave Esau bread, and thick lentil stew, and he ate and drank. Then he got up and went away. So Esau despised his birthright.

³ Reuben, you are my firstborn, my strength, and the firstfruit of my vigor, excelling in rank and excelling in power.

¹ The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but when he defiled the couch of his father, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that he was not enrolled in the genealogy as the firstborn, ² though Judah became strong among his brothers and a chief came from him, but the birthright belonged to Joseph).

³⁶ And he struck down all the firstborn in their land, the first of all their virility.

¹² "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days can be long on the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

¹⁵ And _⌊whoever strikes_⌋* his father or his mother will surely be put to death.

¹⁷ " 'And one who curses his father or his mother will surely be put to death.

³ Each of you must revere your mother* and your father,* and you* must keep my Sabbaths; I am Yahweh your* God.

⁹ " 'As for* the daughter of any priest, if she is defiled by prostituting, she is disgracing her father—she shall be burned in the fire.

⁵ And you should know with your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so Yahweh your God is disciplining you.*

¹⁶ 'Cursed be the one who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all of the people shall say, 'Amen.'

¹⁴ I will be a father to him, and he will be a son for me, whom I will punish when he does wrong, with a rod of men and with blows of the _⌊human beings_⌋.*

⁸ My child, may you keep* your father's instruction, and do not reject your mother's teachings,

²⁴ He who withholds his rod hates his child, but he who loves him _⌊gives him_⌋* discipline.

⁵ A fool will despise the instruction of his father, but he who guards reproof is prudent.

¹⁸ Discipline your child, for there is hope, but on his destruction do not set your desire.*

²⁰ He who curses his father and his mother, his lamp will be extinguished _⌊in the midst of darkness_⌋.*

¹⁵ Folly is bound up in the heart* of a boy;* the rod of discipline will drive it* from him.

¹³ Do not withhold discipline from a child, if you will beat him with the rod, he will not die. ¹⁴ As for you, with the rod you shall beat him, and his life* you will save from Sheol.*

²⁴ He who robs his father and his mother and says, "There is no crime," is partner to a man who corrupts.

¹⁷ Discipline your children, and they will give you rest, and they will give delight to your soul.*

¹¹ There is a generation that will curse its father, and its mother it will not bless.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks a father and scorns the obedience of a mother— the ravens of the valley will peck it out, and the offspring of vultures will eat it.

² Hear, heavens, and listen, earth, for Yahweh has spoken: "I reared children and I brought them up, but they rebelled against me.

⁵ Why do you want to be beaten again? You continue in rebellion. The whole of the head is sick, and the whole of the heart is faint.

³ O Yahweh, do not your eyes look for honesty? You have struck them, but they felt no pain, you have destroyed them, they refused to take discipline. They have hardened their faces more than rock, they have refused to turn back.

⁷ They have treated father and mother with contempt in you; _⌊they violated_⌋* the alien with* extortion; in the midst of you they mistreated the orphan and widow.

¹³ In your uncleanness is obscene conduct, because I cleansed you, but you were not clean from your uncleanness; you will not be clean again until _⌊I fully vent my rage_⌋* on you.

¹¹ "I overthrew some of you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were as a stick snatched from the fire, and yet you did not return to me," is the declaration of Yahweh. ¹² "Therefore, thus I will do to you, O Israel. Because I will do this to you, O Israel, prepare to meet your God!

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ² "Honor your father and mother" (which is the first* commandment with a promise), ³ "in order that it may be well with you, and you may _⌊live a long time_⌋* on the earth."*

⁹ Furthermore, we have had _⌊our earthly fathers_⌋* who disciplined us, and we respected them. Will we not much rather subject ourselves to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a few days according to what seemed appropriate to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we can have a share in his holiness. ¹¹ Now all discipline seems for the moment not to be joyful but painful, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those who are trained by it.

¹⁸ "You shall appoint judges and officials for you in all your _⌊towns_⌋* that Yahweh your God is giving to you throughout your tribes, and you shall render for the people _⌊righteous judgments_⌋.*

² then your elders and your judges shall go out and shall measure the distance to the cities that are around the slain one.

⁷ But if the man does not want to take his sister-in-law, then his sister-in-law shall go up to the gate, to the elders, and she shall say, 'My brother-in-law refused _⌊to perpetuate his brother's name_⌋* in Israel, for he is not willing _⌊to marry me_⌋.'*

³ _⌊And then_⌋,* if anyone prophesies again, his father and his mother who bore him will say to him, "You shall not live, because you have spoken a lie in the name of Yahweh!" And his father and his mother who bore him will pierce him through when he prophesies.

²⁶ He who does violence to a father, he who chases away a mother, is a child who causes shame and brings reproach.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and any who go astray by it are not wise.

¹⁹ You, my child, hear and be wise, and direct your heart* on the road. ²⁰ Do not be among drinkers of wine, among gluttonous eaters of _⌊their meat_⌋.* ²¹ For the drunkard and gluttonous, they will become poor, and with rags, drowsiness will clothe them.

²⁹ To whom is woe? To whom is sorrow? To whom are quarrels? To whom is complaint? To whom are wounds without cause? To whom is redness of the eyes? ³⁰ To those who linger over wine, to those who come to try mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look at wine when it is red, when it _⌊sparkles_⌋* on the cup, going down smoothly. ³² _⌊In the end_⌋,* it will bite like a serpent, and it will sting like an adder. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart* will speak perverse things. ³⁴ And you will be like him who lies down in the heart of the sea, and like him who lies down on top of a mast. ³⁵ "They struck me; I was not hurt. They beat me; I did not know it. When I will awake, I will continue; I will seek it again."

¹⁶ And he who blasphemes Yahweh's name certainly shall be put to death; the whole community certainly shall stone him. As the alien, so the native shall be put to death at blaspheming his name.

⁵ But that prophet or the dreamer of that dream shall be executed, for he spoke falsely about Yahweh your God, the one bringing you out from the land of Egypt and the one redeeming you from the house of slavery, in order to seduce you from the way that Yahweh your God commanded you to go in it; so in this way you shall purge the evil from your midst.

¹⁰ And you shall stone him with stones and let him die, for he tried to seduce you from Yahweh your God, the one bringing you from the land of Egypt, from the house of slavery. ¹¹ And all of Israel shall hear, and they shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to act_⌋* according to this evil thing in your midst.

⁵ then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has* done this evil thing to your gates; that is, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones _⌊to death_⌋.*

¹⁹ then you shall do to him as he meant* to do to his brother, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst. ²⁰ _⌊And the rest_⌋* shall hear and shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to do such a thing again_⌋* as this evil thing in your midst.

²¹ and then they shall bring out the young woman to the doorway of the house of her father, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones, and she shall die, because she did a disgraceful thing in Israel _⌊by playing the harlot_⌋* in the house of her father, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst.

⁴ Yahweh said to Moses, "Take all _⌊the leaders_⌋* of the people and kill them before the sun, so the fierce anger of Yahweh will turn from Israel."

⁶ He does this lest the avenger of blood might pursue after the killer, because _⌊he is hot with anger_⌋* and he overtakes him, because it is a long distance to the city of refuge, and so _⌊he kills him_⌋,* but _⌊he did not deserve a death sentence_⌋,* because he was not hating him _⌊before_⌋.*

²⁶ But you shall not do anything* to the young woman, for there is not reckoned against* the young woman _⌊a sin deserving death_⌋;* _⌊it is similar to when_⌋* a man rises up against his neighbor and murders him, _⌊a fellow human being_⌋,* just so is this _⌊case_⌋,*

²⁹ The king of Ai he hanged on a tree until the time of evening, and as the sun went down Joshua commanded them, and they brought down his dead body from the tree. Then they threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and they raised over it a great heap of stones that remains to this day.

²⁶ And after this Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he hanged them on five trees. And they were hanging on the trees until the evening.

¹⁶ This thing that you have done is not good. _⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊surely you people deserve to die_⌋* since you have not kept watch over your lord, over Yahweh's anointed one! So then, see where the king's spear is and the jar of water that was near his head!"

¹² Then David commanded the young men, and they killed them, and they cut off their hands and their feet, and they hung them at the pool at Hebron, but the head of Ish-Bosheth they took and buried in the grave of Abner at Hebron.

⁶ let seven men from his sons be given over to us, and we will execute them before Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen one of Yahweh." Then the king said, "I will give them over."

⁹ He gave them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they executed them on the mountain in the presence of Yahweh, and the seven fell together. Now they were put to death in the days of the harvest, at the beginning of the harvest of barley.

⁶⁶ What do you think?" And they answered and* said, "_⌊He deserves death_⌋!"*

⁶⁴ You have heard the blasphemy! What _⌊do you think_⌋?"* And they all condemned him _⌊as deserving death_⌋.*

³³ And when they came to the place that is called "The Skull," there they crucified him, and the criminals, the one on his right and the other on his left.

³¹ Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and they could be taken away. ³² So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. ³³ But when they* came to Jesus, after they saw he was already dead, they did not break his legs. ³⁴ But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. ³⁵ And the one who has seen it* has testified, and his testimony is true, and that person knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. ³⁶ For these things happened in order that the scripture would be fulfilled: "Not a bone of his will be broken."* ³⁷ And again another scripture says, "They will look on the one whom they have pierced."* ³⁸ And after these things, Joseph who was from Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but a secret one for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate allowed it,* so he came and took away his body.

²⁹ I found _⌊he_⌋* was accused concerning controversial questions of their law, but having no charge deserving death or imprisonment.

¹¹ If then I am doing wrong* and have done anything deserving death, I am not trying to avoid* dying. But if there is nothing true of the things which these people are accusing me, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!"

²⁵ But I understood that he had done nothing deserving death himself, and when* this man appealed to His Majesty the Emperor, I decided to send him.*

³¹ And as they* were going out, they were talking to one another, saying, "This man is not doing anything deserving death or imprisonment."

²⁵ So* the land became unclean, and _⌊I have brought the punishment of_⌋* its guilt upon it, and the land has vomited out its inhabitants.

²⁶ And you must not bring a detestable thing into your house, or you will become a thing devoted to destruction like it; you must utterly detest it, and you must utterly abhor it, for it is an object devoted to destruction.

¹² The _⌊Israelites_⌋* were unable to stand before their enemies; _⌊they fled from their enemies_⌋* because they have become a thing devoted* for destruction. _⌊I will be with you no more_⌋* unless you destroy the devoted things* from among you.

²⁶ And after this Joshua struck them down and killed them, and he hanged them on five trees. And they were hanging on the trees until the evening. ²⁷ And it happened _⌊at the time of sunset_⌋,* Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they put large stones against the mouth of the cave, which are there to this very day.

³¹ Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and they could be taken away.

³ For I could wish myself to be accursed from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my fellow countrymen according to the flesh,

²² If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!*

²¹ He made the one who did not know sin to be sin on our behalf, in order that we could become the righteousness of God in him.

¹³ Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by* becoming a curse for us, because it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,"*
