³ An Ammonite or a Moabite may not come into the assembly of Yahweh; even to the tenth generation none _⌊of his descendants_⌋* may come into the assembly of Yahweh _⌊forever_⌋,* ⁴ _⌊because_⌋* they did not come to meet you with food and with water _⌊when you came out of Egypt_⌋,* and also _⌊because_⌋* they* hired Balaam, son of Beor, from Pethor, in Aram Naharaim* to act against you to curse you. ⁵ But Yahweh your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, and Yahweh your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because Yahweh your God loved you. ⁶ You shall not promote their welfare or their prosperity all your days _⌊forever_⌋.*

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you."

³ And David went up from there to Mizpah of Moab. He said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and my mother _⌊stay_⌋* with you until I know what God will do for me." ⁴ So _⌊he brought them before the king of Moab_⌋,* and they stayed with him all the days David was in the stronghold.

³ Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him and said, "Their wall of stone that they are building would break down if a fox went on it!" ⁴ Hear, our God, for we are despised. Turn their scorn on their head and give them over to plunder in the land of captivity. ⁵ Do not cover their guilt, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before you. They have _⌊provoked the builders to anger_⌋.* ⁶ So we rebuilt the wall, and all of the wall was joined up to half its height. For the people had a heart to do it. ⁷ Now when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the restoration of the walls of Jerusalem were going forward and the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.

¹ On that day the book of Moses was read in the hearing of the people and it was found written in it that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God ² because they did not come to meet the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them in order to curse them—but our God changed the curse into a blessing. ³ So it happened when they heard the law* that they separated all of the foreign people from Israel.
