When he realized that Saul had come to the wilderness after him, ⁴ David sent spies, and he learned that Saul had come _⌊for certain_⌋.* ⁵ Then David got up and came to the place where Saul had encamped, and David saw the place where Saul was lying down, _⌊as well as_⌋* Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. (Now Saul was lying in the encampment, and the army was encamping around him.) ⁶ David answered and said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah the brother of Joab, saying, "Who will go down with me to Saul, in the camp?" And Abishai said, "I will go down with you." ⁷ So David and Abishai came to the army by night, and _⌊there was_⌋* Saul lying asleep in the encampment with* his spear thrust into the ground near his head, and Abner and the army were lying all around him. ⁸ Then Abishai said to David, "God has handed over your enemy into your hand today! So then, _⌊please let me pin him to the ground with the spear_⌋* _⌊one time_⌋,* and _⌊I will not strike him twice_⌋."* ⁹ But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy* him! For who has stretched out his hand against Yahweh's anointed one and remained blameless?" ¹⁰ And David said, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊certainly_⌋* Yahweh will strike him, or his day will come and he will die, or he will go down in the battle and _⌊perish_⌋.* ¹¹ _⌊Yahweh forbid me_⌋* from stretching out my hand against Yahweh's anointed one! So then, please take the spear that is near his head and the jar of water, and let us go." ¹² So David took the spear and the jar of water from near Saul's head, and they went away. _⌊No one saw, no one knew, and no one awakened_⌋,* for all of them were sleeping because a deep sleep of Yahweh had fallen upon them. ¹³ Then David went to the other side and stood on the top of the hill at a distance; the distance was great between them. ¹⁴ David called out to the army and to Abner the son of Ner, "Will you not answer, Abner?" And Abner answered and said, "Who are you that you call to the king?" ¹⁵ So David said to Abner, "Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? Why did you not keep watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came to destroy* your lord the king. ¹⁶ This thing that you have done is not good. _⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊surely you people deserve to die_⌋* since you have not kept watch over your lord, over Yahweh's anointed one! So then, see where the king's spear is and the jar of water that was near his head!" ¹⁷ Then Saul recognized David's voice and said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" And David said, "It is my voice, my lord the king." ¹⁸ Then he said, "Why is my lord pursuing after his servant? For what have I done? And what evil is in my hand? ¹⁹ And so then, please let my lord the king listen to the words of his servant: If Yahweh has incited you against me, may he delight in an offering; but if _⌊it is mortals_⌋,* may they be accursed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, for they have driven me away today from sharing in the inheritance of Yahweh, saying, 'Go, serve other gods!' ²⁰ And so then, do not let my blood fall to the ground _⌊away from_⌋* the presence of Yahweh, for the king of Israel has gone out to seek a single flea, as one hunts a partridge in the mountains." ²¹ Then Saul said, "I have sinned! Come back, David my son, for I will not harm you again, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Look, I have acted like a fool and _⌊have made a terrible mistake_⌋."* ²² David answered and said, "Here is the king's spear; let one of the young men* come over and take it. ²³ Yahweh repays to each one his righteousness and his faithfulness, for Yahweh gave you into my hand today, but I was not willing to stretch out my hand against Yahweh's anointed. ²⁴ Look, as your life was precious in my eyes this day, may my life be great in the eyes of Yahweh, and may he rescue me from all trouble." ²⁵ Then Saul said to David, "Blessed are you, my son David; _⌊you will not only do many things, but also will always succeed_⌋!"* Then David went on his way and Saul returned to his place.

¹⁹ Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh on the hill of Hakilah, which is south of Jeshimon?

³ Now Saul was on the hill of Hakilah, which is opposite Jeshimon by the road, but David was staying in the wilderness. When he realized that Saul had come to the wilderness after him,

¹ For the music director, with stringed instruments. A maskil of David, when the Ziphites went and said to Saul, "Is not David hiding himself among us?"*
O God, by your name save me, and by your power vindicate me. ² O God, hear my prayer; heed the words of my mouth. ³ For foreigners have risen against me, and ruthless men seek my life. They have not set God before them. Selah ⁴ See, God is my helper; The Lord is with those who sustain my life.* ⁵ He will repay* my enemies for their* evil; in your faithfulness destroy them. ⁶ I will freely sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Yahweh, because it is good. ⁷ Because he has delivered me from all trouble, and my eye has looked with satisfaction on my enemies.

² He chose for himself three thousand from Israel. Two thousand of these were with Saul at Micmash in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. He sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent.

²³ Look, find out all of the hiding places where he hides. Then return to me _⌊with dependable information_⌋,* and I will go with you. And then if he is there in the land, then I will seek him among all the thousands of Judah." ²⁴ Then they got up and went to Ziph before Saul.
Now David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon in the Arabah, to the south of Jeshimon. ²⁵ And Saul and his men went to seek him, and they told David, so he went down to the rock and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. When Saul heard this, he pursued David into the wilderness of Maon.

² So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel, and he and his men went to search for David _⌊in the direction of_⌋* the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.*

¹⁷ Then he said to David, "You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me the good, but I have repaid you the evil.

¹² Those who seek my life lay snares as well, and those intent on my harm speak threats. They also plot deceit all day.

⁴ Protect me, O Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked. Preserve me from violent men, who have planned to _⌊make me stumble_⌋.* ⁵ The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords. They have spread out a net along the _⌊side_⌋* of the path. They have set snares for me. Selah ⁶ I say to Yahweh, "You are my God." Listen, O Yahweh, to the voice of my supplications. ⁷ O Yahweh, my Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle. ⁸ Do not grant, O Yahweh, the desires of the wicked. Do not allow them to attain their* plan, lest they be exalted. Selah ⁹ With respect to the head of those who surround me, may the harm of their lips cover them.

¹ The Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, "Is not David hiding on the hill of Hakilah opposite Jeshimon?"

¹ Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men from Acacia Grove* as spies, saying, "Go, view the land, especially Jericho." So they went, and entered the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and _⌊spent the night_⌋* there.

¹⁶ "Behold, I am sending you out like sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

¹ Now there was a man from Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjaminite, _⌊a very wealthy man_⌋.*

⁵⁰ The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz, and the name of the commander of his army was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. ⁵¹ Now Kish was the father of Saul, but Ner, the father of Abner, was the son of Abiel.

²⁰ David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper, and he took the provisions and went as Jesse had commanded him. He came to the encampment while the troops were going to the battle line, and they raised the war cry.

⁵⁵ Now when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, "Whose son is this young man, Abner?" And Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I do not know."

⁸ But Abner the son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim. ⁹ He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over Israel, all of it. ¹⁰ Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul was forty years old when he became king over Israel and he reigned two years; however, the house of Judah _⌊followed_⌋* David. ¹¹ The number of days that David was king over Hebron, over the house of Judah, was seven years and six months. ¹² Abner the son of Ner and the servants of Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

⁷ Saul had had a concubine, and her name was Rizpah the daughter of Aiah. Then Ish-Bosheth* said to Abner, "Why _⌊did you have sex with_⌋* my father's concubine?" ⁸ _⌊Abner became very angry_⌋* at the words of Ish-Bosheth, and he said, "Am I the head of a dog which is for Judah today? Do I not continue to show loyal love with the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends? I have not let you fall into the hands of David, yet you have _⌊accused me of sin with this woman_⌋* today.

²⁷ When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside to the middle of the gate to speak with him in private. Then he struck him in the stomach there and he died, _⌊for he had shed the blood of Asahel his brother_⌋.*

³³ The king sang a lament for Abner and said, "Should Abner have died the death of a fool? ³⁴ Your hands were not tied and your feet were not in contact with bronze fetters. You have fallen as one who falls before sons of wickedness." Then _⌊all the people wept over him again_⌋.* ³⁵ Then all the people came to give David food. Still on that day, David swore, "_⌊May God punish me_⌋* if I taste food or anything before the sun goes down." ³⁶ All the people noticed, and it was good in their eyes, as everything that the king did was good in the eyes of all the people. ³⁷ Then all the people and all of Israel realized on that day that _⌊the king had not desired_⌋* to kill Abner the son of Ner. ³⁸ Then the king said to his servants, "Did you not realize that a prince and a great man has fallen today in Israel?

³⁹ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

¹⁵ Canaan fathered Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth,

²⁰ the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

¹⁰ But if you are afraid, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, ¹¹ and you will hear what they say; and afterward _⌊you will have courage_⌋,* and you will go down against the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men* that were in the camp.

⁶ So Jonathan said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come, let us go over to the garrisons of these uncircumcised; perhaps Yahweh will act for us, for there is no hindrance for Yahweh to save by many or by few." ⁷ And _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* said, "Do all that is in your heart _⌊that you are inclined to do_⌋.* _⌊I am with you all of the way_⌋!*

¹⁸ The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab and Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was swift with his feet as one of the gazelles which is in the open field.

⁶ So David sent to Joab, "Send Uriah the Hittite to me." So Joab sent Uriah to David.

²¹ Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerub-bosheth,* if not a woman who threw an upper millstone on him from atop the wall and he died at Thebez? Why did you go near the wall?' Then you shall say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite also died.'"

²⁴ The archers shot at your servant from atop the wall, and some of the servants of the king died; your servant Uriah the Hittite also died."

⁹ Why have you despised the word of Yahweh by doing evil in his eyes?* Uriah the Hittite you have struck down with the sword, and his wife you have taken to yourself as wife! You have killed him with the sword of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋!*

⁹ Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Please let me go over and take off his head." ¹⁰ The king said, "_⌊What do we have in common_⌋,* sons of Zeruiah? If* he curses because Yahweh has said to him 'Curse David,' who can say, "Why have you done this?"

⁵ The king ordered Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, "With respect to the young man Absalom, deal gently for me." And all the troops heard when the king ordered all of the commanders concerning the matter of Absalom.

¹⁸ Now Abishai the brother of Joab the son of Zeruiah was himself the leader of the thirty. He was wielding his spear against three hundred slain and _⌊gained a name_⌋* among the thirty.

³⁹ Uriah the Hittite; in all, thirty-seven.

¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, David the seventh. ¹⁶ And their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three.

² for you yourselves well know that the day of the Lord is coming in the same way as a thief in the night. ³ Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of _⌊a pregnant woman_⌋*, and they will not possibly escape.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up?

⁴⁴ Yahweh gave them rest on every side, according to all that he had sworn to their ancestors,* and nobody from all their enemies withstood them, for Yahweh had given all their enemies into their hand.

⁴ And Judah went up, and Yahweh gave the Canaanites* and the Perizzites* into their hand, and they defeated ten thousand men at Bezek.

¹⁴ David remained in the wilderness, in the strongholds, and in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him _⌊continually_⌋,* but God did not give him into his hand.

⁴ And David's men said to him, "Look, today is the day about which Yahweh said to you, 'See, I am giving your enemy* into your hand, and you can do to him _⌊whatever seems good to you_⌋.'"* So David got up and secretly cut the hem of Saul's robe.

¹⁸ You have explained to me today that you have dealt well with me, how* Yahweh delivered me into your hand but you did not kill me. ¹⁹ For a man has found his enemy but sent him on his way safely. Now may Yahweh reward you with good in return for this day, for what you have done for me.

²³ Yahweh repays to each one his righteousness and his faithfulness, for Yahweh gave you into my hand today, but I was not willing to stretch out my hand against Yahweh's anointed.

⁸ And you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a broad place.

⁹ What* do you plot against Yahweh? _⌊He will completely destroy it_⌋;* trouble will not rise up a second time!

³² For God confined them all in disobedience, in order that he could have mercy on them all.

²² But the scripture imprisoned all under sin, in order that the promise could be given by faith* in Jesus Christ to those who believe. ²³ But before faith came, we were detained under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed.

⁶ He said to his men, "Far be it from me in* Yahweh, that I do this thing to my lord, to Yahweh's anointed one, by stretching out my hand against him! For he is the anointed one of Yahweh." ⁷ So David rebuked his men with the words and did not allow them to rise against Saul. And Saul got up from the cave, and he went on his* way.

¹⁴ David said to him, "How is it that you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed one?"

¹⁶ David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you by saying, 'I killed Yahweh's anointed one!'"

¹⁵ "Do not touch my anointed ones, nor harm my prophets."

²⁹ When _⌊the time of Israel's death drew near_⌋,* he called to his son, to Joseph. And he said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, please put your hand under my thigh, that you might vow to deal kindly* and faithfully with me. Please do not bury me in Egypt,

¹⁴ Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Look, _⌊you are about to die_⌋;* call Joshua and present yourselves in the tent of assembly,* so that I may instruct him." So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in* the tent of assembly.*

³⁵ _⌊Vengeance belongs to me_⌋* and also recompense, _⌊for at the time their foot slips_⌋,* because the day of their disaster is near, _⌊and fate comes quickly for them_⌋.'*

¹⁵ May Yahweh be the judge, and let him judge between me and you, and may he see and plead my case. _⌊May he vindicate me against you_⌋!"*

²⁶ So then, my lord, _⌊as Yahweh lives and as your soul lives_⌋,* since Yahweh restrained you from bloodguilt _⌊by taking matters into your own hand_⌋,* so then, may your enemies be like Nabal, even _⌊those who seek to do my lord harm_⌋.*

³⁸ _⌊And then_⌋,* about ten days later, Yahweh struck Nabal and he died.

⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* and all his men together that same day.

¹ "Does not _⌊a human being* have hard service_⌋* on earth? And are not his* days like the days of a laborer?

⁵ If his days are determined, the number of his months is with you; you have appointed his boundaries, and he cannot cross them.

¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I will wait, until the coming of my relief.

¹⁰ And* yet a little while and the wicked will not be, and you will look carefully upon his place, but he will not be.

¹³ The Lord laughs at him, for he sees that his day is coming.

¹ O Yahweh, God of vengeance, God of vengeance, shine forth. ² Rise up, O Judge of the earth. Repay upon the proud what is their rightful due.

²³ And he will repay on them their iniquity, and by* their evil he will destroy them. Yahweh our God will destroy them.

² a time to bear* and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to root up what is planted;

⁷ And will not God surely _⌊see to it that justice is done_⌋* to his chosen ones who cry out to him day and night, and will he delay toward them?

¹⁹ Do not take revenge yourselves, dear friends, but give place to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay,"* says the Lord.

²⁷ And _⌊just as_⌋* it is destined for people to die once, and after this, judgment,

⁸ Because of this her plagues will come in one day— death and mourning and famine— and she will be burned up with fire, because the Lord God who passes judgment on her is powerful!"

⁶ He said to his men, "Far be it from me in* Yahweh, that I do this thing to my lord, to Yahweh's anointed one, by stretching out my hand against him! For he is the anointed one of Yahweh."

¹² May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you, but my hand will not be against you!

²¹ And Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man.* While* he slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up _⌊the flesh where it had been_⌋.*

¹² And it happened, as the sun _⌊went down_⌋,* then a deep sleep fell upon Abram and, behold, a great terrifying darkness fell upon him.

⁷ So David and Abishai came to the army by night, and _⌊there was_⌋* Saul lying asleep in the encampment with* his spear thrust into the ground near his head, and Abner and the army were lying all around him.

¹ During that night the king's sleep escaped him, and he gave orders to bring the _⌊scroll of records and chronicles_⌋,* and they were read before the king.

¹⁰ For Yahweh has poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep, and he has shut your eyes, the prophets, and he has covered your heads, the seers.

⁷ And they told Jotham, and he went up and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and _⌊he cried out loud_⌋* and said to them, "Listen to me, lords of Shechem, so that God may listen to you.

⁸ Then David got up afterward and went out of the cave and called after Saul, "My lord the king!" When Saul looked after him, David knelt down with his face to the ground and bowed down.

³¹ For _⌊as long as_⌋* the son of Jesse is alive on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established! So then, send and bring him to me, for _⌊he will surely die_⌋!"*

⁹ But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy* him! For who has stretched out his hand against Yahweh's anointed one and remained blameless?"

¹¹ _⌊Yahweh forbid me_⌋* from stretching out my hand against Yahweh's anointed one! So then, please take the spear that is near his head and the jar of water, and let us go."

⁵ Then _⌊the anger of David was kindled_⌋* against the man, and he said to Nathan, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* the man who has done this _⌊deserves to die_⌋!*

²⁸ For there was no one in all the house of my father _⌊who were not doomed to death_⌋* before my lord the king, but you set your servant among those who eat at your table. Do I have any righteousness any longer except to cry out to the king?"

¹¹ Let the groaning of the prisoner come before you. According to the greatness of your _⌊power_⌋,* spare* the children appointed to death.

²⁰ to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to liberate _⌊those destined to die_⌋,*

³ among whom also we all formerly lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the will* of the flesh and of the mind, and we were children of wrath* by nature, as also the rest of them were.

¹⁶ When David finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

²⁹ David replied, "What have I done now? _⌊I merely asked a question_⌋!*

⁹ Then David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to the words of people who say: 'Look, David is _⌊seeking to do you harm_⌋'?*

¹¹ Now, my father, see, yes, see, the hem of your robe in my hand! For _⌊when I cut_⌋* the hem of your robe I did not kill you. Know and _⌊realize_⌋* that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand. I did not sin against you, but you are hunting down my life to take it. ¹² May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you, but my hand will not be against you! ¹³ Just as the ancient proverb says, 'From the wicked, wickedness goes out,' but my hand will not be against you! ¹⁴ After whom did the king of Israel go out? After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog? After one flea?

³ O Yahweh, my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands, ⁴ if I have repaid _⌊my ally_⌋* with harm, or if I have plundered my enemy without cause, ⁵ let the enemy of my soul pursue, and overtake and trample my life into the ground, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah

⁷ For without cause they secretly hide the pit with their net for me; without cause they dug it for my life.

⁴ More numerous than the hairs of my head are those hating me without a cause. Those who are destroying me—my enemies wrongfully*— are mighty. What I did not steal, I then must restore.

⁴⁶ Who among you convicts me concerning sin? If I am telling the truth, _⌊why_⌋* do you not believe me?

³² Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good deeds from the Father. For which one of them are you going to stone me?"

²³ Jesus replied to him, "If I have spoken wrongly, testify about what is wrong! But if I have spoken* correctly, why do you strike me?"

²¹ And Yahweh smelled the soothing fragrance, and Yahweh said _⌊to himself_⌋,* "_⌊Never again will I curse_⌋* the ground for the sake of humankind, because the inclination of the heart of humankind is evil from his youth. _⌊Nor will I ever again destroy_⌋* all life as I have done.

¹⁸ But Judah drew near to him and said, "Please my lord, let your servant speak a word in the ears of my lord, and _⌊let not your anger burn_⌋* against your servant, for _⌊you are like Pharaoh himself_⌋.*

³¹ And I will lay your cities in ruins, and I will lay waste your sanctuaries; and I shall not smell your sacrifices'* appeasing fragrance.

²⁷ And Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left _⌊few in number_⌋* among the nations _⌊to where Yahweh will lead you_⌋.* ²⁸ And you will there serve gods _⌊made by human hands_⌋,* of wood and stone, gods that cannot see and cannot hear and cannot eat and cannot smell.

²⁵ Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, the descendants* of Reuben and Gad; you have no portion in Yahweh.' So your children may put an end to our children worshiping* Yahweh. ²⁶ So we said, 'Let us build immediately for ourselves an altar, not for burnt offerings* or for sacrifices;* ²⁷ instead, it is a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us for performing the serving of Yahweh in his presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings; so that your children may not say in the future to our children, "You have no portion in Yahweh." '

¹⁴ Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul and an evil spirit from Yahweh tormented him. ¹⁵ So the servants of Saul said to him, "Look please, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. ¹⁶ Please, let our lord command your servants who are before you! Let them seek a man skilled in playing on the lyre. _⌊When_⌋* the evil spirit from God is upon you, he can play _⌊on it_⌋* and _⌊you will feel better_⌋."* ¹⁷ So Saul said to his servants, "Please select a man _⌊who plays a stringed instrument well_⌋* and bring him to me." ¹⁸ One of the servants answered and said, "Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing a stringed instrument, a _⌊brave man, a warrior, prudent in speech, and handsome_⌋.* And Yahweh is with him." ¹⁹ So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, "Send me David your son who is with the sheep." ²⁰ And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread and a skin of wine and one _⌊young goat_⌋* and sent them to Saul by the hand of David his son. ²¹ So David came to Saul and _⌊entered his service_⌋.* He* loved him greatly and _⌊he became Saul's armor bearer_⌋.* ²² Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me, because he has found favor _⌊in my sight_⌋."* ²³ So whenever the evil spirit from God came to Saul, David would take the stringed instrument and play it with his hand. Then _⌊it would bring relief_⌋* for Saul; _⌊he would feel better_⌋* and the evil spirit would depart from him.

¹⁰ _⌊On_⌋* the next day, the evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. Now David was playing the lyre with his hand on that day _⌊as usual_⌋,* and the spear was in Saul's hand.

²⁴ She fell at his feet and said, "On me, my lord, be the guilt! Please let your female servant speak _⌊to you personally_⌋!* Hear the words of your female servant!

¹⁶ For the king will listen, to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who seeks to destroy me and my son together from the inheritance of God.'

¹¹ David said to Abishai and to all his servants, "Look, my son who came out of my loins* is seeking my life. Now _⌊as far as_⌋* this Benjaminite, leave him alone and let him curse, for Yahweh has spoken to him.

¹⁹ I am one of the faithful representatives of Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why do you want to swallow the inheritance of Yahweh?"

¹ Again Yahweh was angry with Israel, and he* incited David against them, saying, "Go count Israel and Judah."

²² He said, 'I will go out and I will be a false spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.' And he* said, 'You shall entice and succeed, go out and do so.'

¹ Then Satan* stood against Israel and urged David to count Israel.

As a deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God. ² My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?*

¹ Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of Yahweh. ² Blessed are those who keep his testimonies; they seek him with a whole heart. ³ They also do no wrong; they walk in his ways. ⁴ You have commanded* your precepts, that we should keep them diligently. ⁵ Oh that my ways were steadfast, to keep your statutes! ⁶ Then I would not be ashamed when I look to all your commands. ⁷ I will give you thanks with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous laws. ⁸ I will heed your statutes; do not utterly forsake me.

⁵ Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar.

¹⁶ There are six things Yahweh hates, and seven things are abominations of his soul:* ¹⁷ haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ a devising heart, plans of deception, feet that hurry to run to evil,* ¹⁹ a false witness who breathes lies and sends out discord* between brothers.

¹⁰ Do not slander a servant to his master, or else he will curse you and you will be guilty.

⁵ Then you shall see and you shall be radiant; and your heart shall tremble and open itself wide, because the abundance of the sea shall fall upon you; the wealth of the nations shall come to you.

¹⁵ For if because of food, your brother is grieved, you are no longer living according to love. Do not destroy by your food that person for whom Christ died.

⁸ But even if we or an angel from heaven should proclaim a gospel to you contrary to what we proclaimed to you, let him be accursed! ⁹ As we said before, and now I say again, if anyone is proclaiming a gospel to you contrary to what you have received, let him be accursed!

¹² I wish that the ones who are disturbing you would also _⌊castrate themselves_⌋*!

¹⁴ Alexander the metalworker did me much harm; may the Lord pay back to him according to his deeds,

⁹ He will guard the feet of his faithful* ones, but the wicked will be destroyed* in the darkness, because a man will not prevail by his might.

¹⁴ After whom did the king of Israel go out? After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog? After one flea?

²⁹ Should a man arise to pursue you and to seek your life, may the life of my lord be wrapped in the pouch* of the living with Yahweh your God. But as for the life of your enemy, he will sling it from within* the pocket of the sling!

⁴⁷ And while* he was still speaking, behold, Judas—one of the twelve—arrived, and with him a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people.

⁵⁵ At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber, to arrest me? Every day in the temple courts* I sat teaching, and you did not arrest me!

²⁷ And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, "I have sinned this time. Yahweh is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones.

³⁴ Balaam said to the angel of Yahweh, "I have sinned because I did not know that you were standing to meet me in the road. Now, _⌊if it is displeasing to you_⌋,* I will turn back."

²⁴ Then Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned because I have transgressed _⌊the commandment of Yahweh_⌋* and your words, for I feared the troops and I listened to their voice.

³⁰ Then he* said, "I have sinned! Now please honor me before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me _⌊so that I can worship_⌋* Yahweh your God."

³⁰ Then the commanders of the Philistines went out for battle, and as often as they went out, David succeeded more than all the servants of Saul, and his name became very esteemed.

²⁴ Look, as your life was precious in my eyes this day, may my life be great in the eyes of Yahweh, and may he rescue me from all trouble."

⁴ And it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath, so _⌊he no longer searched for him_⌋.*

⁸ (since* the redemption price for their life is costly and it always fails),

¹⁵ Costly _⌊in Yahweh's view_⌋* is the death of his faithful ones.

⁴ saying, "I have sinned by* betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"*

³² then you shall hear in heaven and you shall act and you shall judge your servant, to declare the wicked guilty by bringing his way upon his head and _⌊to declare the righteous innocent_⌋* by rewarding him according to his righteousness.

¹⁴ Remember me, my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my loyal acts which I have done in the house of my God and in his service.

⁸ Yahweh judges the nations. O Yahweh, vindicate me according to my innocence* and according to my integrity within me. ⁹ Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous, and test the hearts and innermost being, O righteous God.

²⁰ Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands he has repaid me. ²¹ Because I have kept the ways of Yahweh, and have not acted wickedly against my God, ²² because all his ordinances are before me, and his statutes I have not removed from me, ²³ and I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. ²⁴ Therefore Yahweh has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. ²⁵ To the loyal you show yourself loyal. To the blameless you show yourself blameless. ²⁶ To the pure you show yourself pure. but to the wicked you show yourself shrewd.

¹² And to you belongs loyal love, O Lord, because you will render to each according to his work.

¹⁶ The angel who redeemed me from all evil, may he bless the boys. And through them let my name be perpetuated,* and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac. And let them multiply into many in the midst of the earth.

¹ For the music director. Of David, the servant of Yahweh, who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song _⌊when_⌋* Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.*
And he said: "I love you, O Yahweh, my strength."

²⁵ To the loyal you show yourself loyal. To the blameless you show yourself blameless.

⁴⁸ who delivered me from my enemies. Indeed, you exalted me higher than those who rose against me. You delivered me from the man of violence.

¹⁷ They* cry out and Yahweh hears and delivers them from all of their troubles. ¹⁸ Yahweh is near to those who are heartbroken and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

⁷ Because he has delivered me from all trouble, and my eye has looked with satisfaction on my enemies.

² my loyal love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, and one in whom I take refuge, the one who subdues peoples* under me.

⁷ Blessed are the merciful, because they will be shown mercy.

² For by what judgment you judge, you will be judged, and by what measure you measure out, it will be measured out to you.

²² strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them* to continue in the faith and saying,* "Through many persecutions* it is necessary for us to enter into the kingdom of God."

⁹ But we ourselves had the sentence of death in ourselves, so that we would not be putting confidence in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead, ¹⁰ who delivered us from so great a risk of death, and will deliver us, in whom we have put our hope that he will also deliver us again,

² and that we may be delivered from evil and wicked people, _⌊for not all have the faith_⌋*.

¹⁴ And I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me,
"These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

²⁸ And he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,* for you have struggled with God and with men and have prevailed."

⁹ He crouches, he lies down like a lion, and like a lioness, who will rouse him? They who bless you will be blessed, and they who curse you will be cursed." ¹⁰ Then _⌊Balak became angry with_⌋* Balaam, and he clapped his hands and said to Balaam, "I called you to curse my enemies, but look, you have surely blessed them these three times.

¹⁹ For a man has found his enemy but sent him on his way safely. Now may Yahweh reward you with good in return for this day, for what you have done for me.

²² So David swore this on oath to Saul, and Saul went to his house, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

²⁵ When he makes his voice gracious, do not believe him, for seven abominations are in his heart.

¹⁷ Every weapon formed against you shall not succeed, and you shall declare guilty every tongue that rises against you for judgment. This is the inheritance of the servants of Yahweh, and their _⌊legal right_⌋* from me,"
_⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

⁴ He struggled with the angel and prevailed; he pleaded for his mercy. He met him at Bethel, and there he spoke with him.*

³⁵ Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will affliction or distress or persecution or hunger or lack of sufficient clothing or danger or the sword?

³⁷ No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the one who loved us.
