When his brothers and all his father's household* heard, they came down to him there. ² Every man in distress and every man who had a creditor and every embittered man gathered to him, and he became _⌊their commander_⌋.* Now there were about four hundred men with him. ³ And David went up from there to Mizpah of Moab. He said to the king of Moab, "Please let my father and my mother _⌊stay_⌋* with you until I know what God will do for me." ⁴ So _⌊he brought them before the king of Moab_⌋,* and they stayed with him all the days David was in the stronghold. ⁵ Then Gad the prophet said to David, "You should not stay in the stronghold; leave and go into the land of Judah." So David left and came to the forest of Hereth. ⁶ Now Saul heard that David and the men who were with him had been located. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree at Ramah. Now his spear was in his hand and all his servants were stationed around him. ⁷ Then Saul said to the servants who were standing around him, "Please listen, _⌊Benjaminites_⌋!* Will the son of Jesse give you all fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds? ⁸ For all of you have conspired against me, and _⌊no one discloses to me_⌋* the _⌊making_⌋* of an agreement between my son and the son of Jesse! None of you have had sympathy for me or _⌊disclosed to me_⌋* that _⌊my son commissioned my servant against me to ambush me_⌋* as has been done this day!" ⁹ But Doeg the Edomite, who was stationed among the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Yahweh for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine." ¹¹ So the king sent to summon Ahimelech the son of Ahitub the priest, and all his father's household, the priests who were at Nob. So all of them came to the king. ¹² Saul said, "Listen please, son of Ahitub." He said, "Here I am, my lord." ¹³ Then Saul said to him, "Why did you conspire against me, you and the son of Jesse, when you gave to him bread and a sword, and by inquiring of God for him so that he might arise against me to ambush me as has been done this day?" ¹⁴ But Ahimelech answered the king and said, "And who among all your servants is as faithful as David? He is the son-in-law of the king who moves quickly to safeguard you and is honored in your house. ¹⁵ Only today I began to inquire of God for him. Far be it from me that _⌊the king should impute anything against his servant_⌋* or against my father's household, for your servant has not known any of this matter, little or much." ¹⁶ Then the king said, "You must certainly die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's household!" ¹⁷ So the king said to the runners who were stationed around him, "Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because _⌊they also support David_⌋* and because they knew that he was fleeing and _⌊did not disclose it to me_⌋."* But the servants of the king were not willing to raise their hand to attack the priests of Yahweh. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests!" So Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests himself, and on that day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod. ¹⁹ And _⌊he put to the sword_⌋* Nob, the city of the priests, from man to woman, from child to infant, and ox and donkey and sheep;* all _⌊to the sword_⌋.* ²⁰ But, one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, whose name was Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. ²¹ Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of Yahweh. ²² Then David said to Abiathar, "I knew on that day that Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would certainly tell Saul. _⌊I am responsible for the deaths of all your father's household_⌋!* ²³ Stay with me! Do not fear, because he who seeks my life seeks your life. You are in good care with me."

¹⁰ So David got up and fled on that day from the presence of Saul, and he came to Achish the king of Gath. ¹¹ The servants of Achish said to him, "Is not this David the king of the land? Is it not for this one that they sang in the dances, saying, 'Saul killed his thousands, but David his ten thousands?'" ¹² _⌊David took these words seriously_⌋* and _⌊felt severely threatened by_⌋* Achish the king of Gath. ¹³ So he changed his behavior _⌊before them_⌋* and pretended to be mad _⌊in their presence_⌋.* He made scratches on the doors of the gate and let his saliva run down into his beard. ¹⁴ Then Achish said to his servants, "Look, you see a madman! Why did you bring him to me? ¹⁵ Do I lack madmen that you have brought this one to act like a madman before me? Should this one enter my household?"

¹³ Then three* of the thirty leaders went down and came to David _⌊at the time of the harvest_⌋* to the cave of Adullam, while a group of the Philistines were camping in the valley of the Rephaim. ¹⁴ Now at that time, David was in the stronghold, and a garrison of the Philistines was in Bethlehem at that same time.

¹⁵ And three of the thirty chiefs went down toward the rock to David at the cave of Adullam when the army of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, because in you my soul takes refuge. In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge until destruction passes by. ² I will call to God Most High, to God who accomplishes things concerning me. ³ He will send from heaven and save me; he will reproach the one who tramples me. Selah God will send his loyal love and his faithfulness. ⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie down among those who devour— the children* of humankind whose teeth are spears and arrows and whose tongues are sharp swords. ⁵ Be exalted above the heavens, O God. Let your glory be above all the earth. ⁶ They have set a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down. They have dug a pit before me; they have fallen into the midst of it. I cry out with my voice to Yahweh; I implore favor with my voice to Yahweh. ² I pour out my complaint before him; I declare my trouble before him. ³ When my spirit faints within me, you know my way. On the path where I walk, they have hidden a trap for me; ⁴ look to my right and see. There is no one looking out for me; there is no escape for me;* no one cares for my soul.* ⁵ I cry out to you, O Yahweh. I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." ⁶ Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low. Deliver me from my pursuers, for they are stronger than I. ⁷ Bring me* out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will encircle me, because you will deal bountifully with me.

³ For behold, Yahweh is coming out from his place, and he will come down and tread upon the high places of the earth.

¹⁵ I will again bring the conqueror upon you, O inhabitants of Mareshah; the glory of Israel will come to Adullam.

³⁸ of whom the world was not worthy, wandering about on deserts and mountains and in caves and in holes in the ground.

³ So Jephthah fled from the presence of his brothers, and he lived in the land of Tob. And _⌊outlaws_⌋* gathered around Jephthah and went with him.

²⁵ And the descendants* of Dan said to him, "You should not let your voice be heard among us, so that _⌊ill-tempered men_⌋* _⌊will not attack you_⌋,* _⌊and take your life_⌋* and the lives of your household."

¹⁰ She was _⌊deeply troubled_⌋,* so she prayed to Yahweh and wept bitterly.

¹⁶ "This time tomorrow I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you must anoint him as leader over my people Israel. He will deliver my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen the suffering of my people, because their cry of distress has come to me."

¹³ So David and his men got up, about six hundred men, and went out from Keilah and wandered wherever they could go. When it was told to Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, _⌊he stopped his pursuit_⌋.*

¹³ Then David said to his men, "Each man strap on his sword!" So each one strapped on his sword, and David also strapped on his sword. About four hundred men went up after David, while two hundred remained with the baggage.

¹⁵ even though the men were very good to us; we were not mistreated and did not miss anything all the days we went about with them _⌊while we were_⌋* in the field. ¹⁶ They were a wall to us both night and day, all _⌊the days we were_⌋* with them keeping the sheep.

⁶ And _⌊David was in a very precarious situation_⌋,* for the people spoke of stoning him, for the souls of all the people were bitter, each one over his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.

²² Then all the corrupt and useless men among the men who went with David reacted and said, "Because they did not go with us, we will not give them anything from the plunder which we recovered, _⌊except_⌋* each man may take his own wife and children. They must take them along and go!" ²³ But David said to them, "You should not do so, my brothers, with what Yahweh has given to us! He has preserved us and has given the raiding band that came against us into our hand. ²⁴ And who would listen to you regarding this matter? For as the share of the one who went down into the battle, so the share of the one who remained with the baggage will be. They will share alike."

² _⌊For some time_⌋,* when Saul was king over us, _⌊you were leading Israel in and out_⌋.* Yahweh had said to you, 'You shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the leader over Israel.'"

⁸ Hushai continued, "You know your father and his men, that they are mighty warriors and they _⌊are enraged_⌋* as a bear robbed of her offspring in the field. Your father is a man of war, so he will not spend the night with the troops.

⁵ "Return; you must say to Hezekiah, the leader of my people, 'Thus says Yahweh the God of David your ancestor,* "I have heard your prayer and I have seen your tears. Look, I am about to heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the temple of Yahweh.

¹⁵ And three of the thirty chiefs went down toward the rock to David at the cave of Adullam when the army of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁶ And David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. ¹⁷ And David had a craving, and he said, "Who could give me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!" ¹⁸ Then the three broke through into the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and brought it and came to David. But David would not drink it and poured it out before Yahweh. ¹⁹ And he said, "Far be it from me that I would do this before my God. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For _⌊at the risk of their lives_⌋* they brought it." And he was not willing to drink it. These things the three mighty men did.

¹² Indeed he will deliver the needy who is crying for help, and the afflicted who has no helper. ¹³ He will take pity on the helpless and needy, and the lives of the needy he will save. ¹⁴ From oppression and from violence he will redeem their lives, and their blood will be precious in his eyes.

⁶ Give strong drink to him who is perishing, and wine to those _⌊in bitter distress_⌋.*

¹² And when he* heard it,* he said, "Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those _⌊who are sick_⌋.* ¹³ But go and* learn what it means, "I want mercy and not sacrifice."* For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

¹² But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven is treated violently, and the violent claim* it.

²⁸ Come to me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

²⁵ And because* he did not have enough* to repay it,* the master ordered him to be sold, and his* wife and his* children and everything that he had, and to be repaid. ²⁶ Then the slave threw himself to the ground and* began to do obeisance to him, saying, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay back everything to you!' ²⁷ So the master of that slave, because he* had compassion, released him and forgave him the loan. ²⁸ But that slave went out and* found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii, and taking hold of him, he began to choke him,* saying, 'Pay back everything that you owe!' ²⁹ Then his fellow slave threw himself to the ground and* began to implore* him, saying, 'Be patient with me and I will repay you!' ³⁰ But he did not want to, but rather he went and* threw him into prison until he would repay what was owed. ³¹ So when* his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were extremely distressed, and went and* reported to their master everything that had happened. ³² Then his master summoned him and* said to him, 'Wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you implored me! ³³ Should you not also have shown mercy to your fellow slave as I also showed mercy to you?' ³⁴ And because he* was angry, his master handed him over to the merciless jailers* until he would repay everything that was owed.

¹⁰ For it was fitting for him for whom are all things and through whom are all things in bringing many sons to glory to perfect the originator of their salvation through sufferings.

¹¹ And Joseph settled his father and his brothers, and he gave them property in the land of Egypt in the best part of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had instructed.

¹² "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days can be long on the land that Yahweh your God is giving you.

²⁹ And the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed through to the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.*

¹ And it happened in the days when _⌊the judges ruled_⌋,* there was a famine in the land, and a man from Bethlehem of Judah went _⌊to reside_⌋* in the countryside of Moab—he and his wife and his two sons. ² And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephraimites from Bethlehem in Judah. And they went to the countryside of Moab and remained there. ³ But Elimelech the husband of Naomi died and she was left behind with _⌊her two sons_⌋.* ⁴ And _⌊they took_⌋* for themselves Moabite wives. The name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other was Ruth. And they lived there about ten years.

¹⁰ And also Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, I have acquired as a wife, to raise up the name of the dead over his inheritance, so that the name of the dead may not be cut off from his relatives and from the gate of his birth place. You are witnesses today."

¹⁷ And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, "A son has been born to Naomi." And they called his name Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

¹⁸ So Samuel told him all the words and did not conceal anything from him. And he* said, "He is Yahweh, he will do _⌊what is_⌋* good in his _⌊sight_⌋."*

⁴⁷ So Saul took the kingship over Israel, and he fought all around against his enemies, against Moab, against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. He inflicted punishment against all who rebelled.

²⁵ The king said to Zadok, "Let the ark of God return to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of Yawheh, he will let me return and let me see him in his dwelling place. ²⁶ But if he says, 'I take no pleasure in you,' then _⌊I am ready_⌋.* Let him do to me that which is good in his eyes.

⁴ For God said, 'Honor your* father and your* mother,'* and 'The one who speaks evil of father or mother _⌊must certainly die_⌋*.'* ⁵ But you say, 'Whoever says to his* father or his* mother, "Whatever _⌊benefit you would have received_⌋* from me is a gift to God," ⁶ need not honor his father,'* and you make void the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

²³ Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see _⌊my circumstances_⌋*. ²⁴ And I am convinced in the Lord that I myself will arrive shortly also.

⁴ But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they must learn to show profound respect for their own household first, and to pay back recompense to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.

¹ Now they told David, "Look, the Philistines are fighting in Keilah and they are raiding the threshing floors." ² So David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go and attack these Philistines?" And Yahweh said to David, "Go and attack the Philistines and save* Keilah." ³ But David's men said to him, "Look, we are afraid here in Judah. _⌊How much more_⌋* if we go to Keilah to the battle lines of the Philistines?" ⁴ So David again inquired of Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him and said, "Get up, go down to Keilah, for I am giving the Philistines into your hand." ⁵ So David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines. They drove off their livestock and _⌊dealt them a heavy blow_⌋.* So David saved* the inhabitants of Keilah. ⁶ _⌊Now when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled_⌋* to David at Keilah, he went down with an ephod in his hand.

¹¹ When David got up in the morning, the word of Yahweh came to Gad the prophet, the seer of David, saying,

¹⁶ And some of the sons of Benjamin and from Judah came to the fortress, to David.

⁹ Then Yahweh spoke to Gad the seer of David, saying,

²⁹ Now the words of King David, from the first to the last, see, they are written among the words of Samuel the seer, and among the words of Nathan the prophet, and among the words of Gad the seer,

²⁵ And he stood the Levites in the house of Yahweh with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the command of David and Gad, the seer of the king, and Nathan the prophet, for the command was by the hand of Yahweh by the hand of his prophets.

¹¹ But I said, "Should a man like me run away? And would a man like me go into the temple so that he can save his life? I will not go in!"

In Yahweh I have taken refuge; how can you say to my soul, "Flee to your mountain like a bird"?

¹² "You must not call conspiracy everything that this people calls conspiracy, and you must not _⌊share its fear_⌋,* and you must not be in dread. ¹³ You shall regard Yahweh of hosts as holy, and he is your* fear, and he is your dread. ¹⁴ And he will become like a sanctuary and a stumbling-stone, and like a stumbling-rock for the two houses of Israel, like a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

²³ And whenever they persecute you in this town, flee to another, for truly I say to you, you will never finish going through the towns of Israel until the Son of Man comes.

³³ And he* planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of Yahweh, _⌊the everlasting God_⌋.*

⁵ And she used to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went up to her for judgment.

¹⁰ _⌊On_⌋* the next day, the evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. Now David was playing the lyre with his hand on that day _⌊as usual_⌋,* and the spear was in Saul's hand.

⁹ Then the evil spirit from Yahweh came upon Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing a stringed instrument in his hand.

³³ Then Saul hurled his* spear at him to kill him. So Jonathan knew _⌊that his father had decided_⌋* to kill David.

¹¹ He said, "This will be the custom of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots. ¹² He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and those _⌊to do his plowing_⌋* and to reap his harvest, and those to make weapons of war and the equipment for his chariots.

¹⁴ He will take the best of your fields and your vineyards and your olive trees and will give them to his servants. ¹⁵ He will take a tenth of your seed and your vineyards and give it to his high officials and to his servants.

¹⁴ And David was achieving success in all his ways and Yahweh was with him,

²⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* on the next day, the second day of the new moon, that David's place was empty. So Saul asked Jonathan his son, "Why did the son of Jesse not come either yesterday or today to the feast?"

³⁰ Then _⌊Saul became angry_⌋* at Jonathan and said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman!* Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?

⁹ But Doeg the Edomite, who was stationed among the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

¹³ Then Saul said to him, "Why did you conspire against me, you and the son of Jesse, when you gave to him bread and a sword, and by inquiring of God for him so that he might arise against me to ambush me as has been done this day?"

¹⁰ But Nabal answered David's servants and said, "Who is David? And who is the son of Jesse? Today, there are many servants breaking away from the presence of their masters.

¹ Now a man of wickedness was found there whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjaminite. He blew the horn and said, "There is no share for us in David, and there is no inheritance for us in the son of Jesse; each to his tents, O Israel!"

¹⁶ When all of Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, "_⌊What share do we have in David_⌋?* There is no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now look to your house, David!" Then Israel went to their* tents.

¹ And a shoot will come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from its roots will bear fruit.

¹⁰ And this shall happen on that day:
the nations shall inquire of the root of Jesse, which shall be standing as a signal to the peoples, and his resting place shall be glorious.

³ Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.

² And he said to him, "Far from it! You will not die! Look, my father does not do* _⌊anything large or small unless he reveals it to me_⌋.* Why should my father hide this thing or anything from me?"

⁸ So you must show loyal love to your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of Yahweh with you. But if there is guilt in me, then kill me yourself! But why should you bring me to your father?"

¹³ _⌊So may Yahweh punish Jonathan and more_⌋* if _⌊my father decides to do you harm_⌋* and if _⌊I fail to disclose it to you_⌋* and send word to you that you can go safely. And may Yahweh be with you, as he has been with my father. ¹⁴ And not while I am still alive, will you not show the loyal love of Yahweh with me, that I may not die?* ¹⁵ And do not cut off your loyal love from _⌊my family_⌋* forever, not even when Yahweh _⌊exterminates_⌋* each of the enemies of David from the face of the earth." ¹⁶ So Jonathan _⌊made a covenant_⌋* with the house of David, saying, "May Yahweh _⌊call the enemies of David to account_⌋."* ¹⁷ And Jonathan again made David swear an oath, because he loved him; for with the love of his soul he loved him.

³⁰ Then _⌊Saul became angry_⌋* at Jonathan and said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman!* Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? ³¹ For _⌊as long as_⌋* the son of Jesse is alive on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established! So then, send and bring him to me, for _⌊he will surely die_⌋!"* ³² But Jonathan answered his father Saul and said to him, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?" ³³ Then Saul hurled his* spear at him to kill him. So Jonathan knew _⌊that his father had decided_⌋* to kill David. ³⁴ Jonathan got up from the table _⌊enraged_⌋,* and did not eat on the second day of the new moon because he was upset about David, because his father had disgraced him.

⁴² Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, because we have sworn, the two of us, an oath in the name of Yahweh, saying, "Yahweh will be between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring forever."* Then he got up and left, and Jonathan went into the city.

¹⁶ So Jonathan the son of Saul got up and went to David at Horesh, and _⌊encouraged him_⌋* through God. ¹⁷ He said to him, "Do not be afraid, for the hand of my father Saul will not find you. You will be king over Israel, and _⌊I will be second to you_⌋.* My father Saul knows this also." ¹⁸ Then the two of them _⌊made_⌋* a covenant before Yahweh. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went to his house.

²¹ And Saul said to them, "May you be blessed by Yahweh, for you have shown me compassion!

¹⁶ then he opens the ear of men, and _⌊he frightens them with a warning_⌋*

³ Now Ahijah, the son of Ahitub (the brother of Ichabod), the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh, was carrying an ephod. The troops did not know that Jonathan had gone.

¹ Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came trembling to meet David, and he said to him, "Why are you alone and there are no men with you?" ² So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king charged me with a matter and said to me, 'No one must know anything about this matter on which I am sending you, with which I have charged you and the servants.'" So _⌊I have arranged to meet with my servants at a certain place_⌋.* ³ Now then, _⌊what do you have at hand_⌋?* Give me five loaves of bread or _⌊whatever is here_⌋."* ⁴ The priest answered David and said, "There is no ordinary bread _⌊here at hand_⌋;* there is only holy bread, but only if the young men have kept themselves from women." ⁵ David answered the priest and said to him, "Indeed, women were held back from us _⌊as it has been when I've gone out before_⌋.* And the things* of the young men are holy when* it is an ordinary journey. _⌊How much more_⌋* _⌊today_⌋* will the things* be holy?" ⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence, which was removed from before Yahweh, in order to set hot bread there on the day when it was taken away. ⁷ Now there was a man from the servants of Saul on that day, detained before Yahweh, whose name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's shepherds. ⁸ David asked Ahimelech, "Is there not _⌊at your disposal_⌋* a spear or a sword? For I took neither my sword nor my weapons with me because the king's matter was urgent." ⁹ So the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine whom you killed in the valley of Elah is here, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want to take it for yourself, then take it, for there is no other except it here." And David said, "There is none like it; give it to me."

¹ For the music director. A maskil of David. When Doeg the Edomite came and informed Saul. And he said to him, "David has come to the house of Ahimelech."*
Why do you boast about evil, O mighty man? The loyal love of God endures _⌊continually_⌋.* ² Your tongue plans destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceit. ³ You love evil more than good, a lie more than speaking _⌊what is right_⌋.* Selah ⁴ You love all devouring words, O deceitful tongue, ⁵ but God will pull you down forever. He will snatch you and tear you away from your tent, and he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah ⁶ And the righteous will see and fear, and will laugh at him, saying, ⁷ "Look, the man who would not make God his refuge, but he trusted in the greatness of his wealth; he took refuge in his destructiveness." ⁸ But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house* of God. I trust the loyal love of God forever and ever. ⁹ I will give thanks to you forever, because of what you have done, and I will wait on your name, because it is good, in the presence of your faithful ones.

⁵ A witness of falsehood will not go unpunished, and he who breathes lies will not escape.

¹² A ruler listening to a word of falsehood, all his officials are wicked.

⁹ Slanderous men are _⌊among you_⌋* to shed blood, and they, _⌊among you_⌋,* eat upon the mountains; they do wickedness in the midst of you.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order that they could put him to death. ⁶⁰ And they did not find it,* although* many false witnesses came forward. And finally two came forward ⁶¹ and* said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it* within three days.'"

²¹ He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him by the decision* of the Urim before Yahweh. On _⌊his command_⌋* they will go out, and at _⌊his command_⌋* they will come in, both he and all of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with him, the entire community."

²² So they inquired again of Yahweh, "_⌊Did the man come here_⌋?" * And Yahweh said, "Look, he is hiding himself among the baggage."

⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence, which was removed from before Yahweh, in order to set hot bread there on the day when it was taken away. ⁷ Now there was a man from the servants of Saul on that day, detained before Yahweh, whose name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's shepherds. ⁸ David asked Ahimelech, "Is there not _⌊at your disposal_⌋* a spear or a sword? ¹⁵ Only today I began to inquire of God for him. Far be it from me that _⌊the king should impute anything against his servant_⌋* or against my father's household, for your servant has not known any of this matter, little or much."

² So David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go and attack these Philistines?" And Yahweh said to David, "Go and attack the Philistines and save* Keilah."

⁴ So David again inquired of Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him and said, "Get up, go down to Keilah, for I am giving the Philistines into your hand."

¹² Then David said, "Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" And Yahweh said, "They will deliver you."

⁸ And David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Should I pursue after this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?" He said to him, "Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them, and you will certainly rescue them."

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood;

⁷ Then Saul said to the servants who were standing around him, "Please listen, _⌊Benjaminites_⌋!* Will the son of Jesse give you all fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?

⁶ So Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David. And he fell on his face and did obeisance. David said, "Mephibosheth," and he said, "_⌊I am ready to serve you_⌋."*

¹ "I let myself be sought by those who did not ask; I let myself be found by those who did not seek me. I said, 'Here I am; here I am!' to a nation that did not call on my name;

⁸ For all of you have conspired against me, and _⌊no one discloses to me_⌋* the _⌊making_⌋* of an agreement between my son and the son of Jesse! None of you have had sympathy for me or _⌊disclosed to me_⌋* that _⌊my son commissioned my servant against me to ambush me_⌋* as has been done this day!"

⁶⁹ The arrogant smear me with lies;* I keep your precepts with my whole heart.

¹⁰ Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam the king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to endure all of his words.

² And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man misleading our nation and forbidding us* to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying he himself is Christ, a king!" ³ And Pilate asked him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And he answered him and* said, "You say so." ⁴ So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no basis for an accusation against this man." ⁵ But they insisted, saying, "He incites the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea and beginning from Galilee as far as here."

²⁵ And the men of Israel said, "Did you see this man who has come up? For he is going up to defy Israel! It will be that the man who defeats him, the king will make him* very rich with great wealth and will give him his daughter in marriage and will make his father's house free in Israel."*

¹³ So Saul removed him _⌊from his presence_⌋,* and made him commander of a thousand, _⌊so he* marched in and out at the front of the army_⌋.*

²⁷ And David got up, and he and his men went and struck down two hundred men of the Philistines. Then David brought their foreskins, and _⌊they presented the full number_⌋* to become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him Michal his daughter as his wife.

⁴ So Jonathan spoke well about David to his father Saul and said to him, "The king should not sin against his servant David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his service for you has been very good. ⁵ He put his life in his hand and attacked the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great victory for all of Israel, and you saw it and rejoiced! Now why should you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?"

³² But Jonathan answered his father Saul and said to him, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?"

² So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king charged me with a matter and said to me, 'No one must know anything about this matter on which I am sending you, with which I have charged you and the servants.'" So _⌊I have arranged to meet with my servants at a certain place_⌋.*

¹¹ Now, my father, see, yes, see, the hem of your robe in my hand! For _⌊when I cut_⌋* the hem of your robe I did not kill you. Know and _⌊realize_⌋* that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand. I did not sin against you, but you are hunting down my life to take it.

²³ Yahweh repays to each one his righteousness and his faithfulness, for Yahweh gave you into my hand today, but I was not willing to stretch out my hand against Yahweh's anointed.

²³ For all of his ordinances were before me, and I did not turn aside from his statutes. ²⁴ I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. ²⁵ Yahweh has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness before his eyes.

¹¹ Rescue those who are led away to the death and those who stagger to the slaughter. If you hold back, ¹² if you say, "Look, we do not know this," does not he who weighs hearts perceive it? And he who keeps your soul,* he knows and will repay humankind according to his deeds.

⁸ Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights* of all the _⌊needy_⌋.* ⁹ Open your mouth, judge righteousness, and defend the poor and needy.

⁵ Did not he himself say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' With integrity of my heart and with cleanness of my hands I did this." ⁶ Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes,* I know that in the integrity of your heart you did this, and I also _⌊kept you from sinning_⌋* against me. Therefore, I did not allow you to touch her.

³⁶ Then Abigail went to Nabal, and look, _⌊he was holding a feast_⌋* in his house like the feast of the king. _⌊Nabal was enjoying himself_⌋,* and he was very drunk, so she did not tell him a thing, _⌊nothing at all_⌋,* until the light of morning.

¹¹ Two hundred men from Jerusalem went with Absalom as invited guests, going in their innocence as they did not know anything.

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

¹⁶ But do so with courtesy and respect, having a good conscience, so that in the things in which you are slandered, the ones who malign your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. ¹⁷ For it is better to suffer for doing good, _⌊if God wills it_⌋*, than for doing evil.

¹⁶ "Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, and children shall not be put to death because of their fathers; each one shall be put to death for his own sin.

⁴⁴ Then Saul said, "So may God do to me and _⌊more_⌋,* you will certainly die today, Jonathan!"

³¹ For _⌊as long as_⌋* the son of Jesse is alive on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established! So then, send and bring him to me, for _⌊he will surely die_⌋!"*

⁴ It had happened that when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them _⌊by fifties_⌋* in the cave and sustained them with food and water.)

² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "Thus may the gods do to me, and may they add to it, surely at this time tomorrow I will make your life as the life of one of them!"

⁶ But _⌊he considered it beneath him_⌋* to lay hands on Mordecai only, for they told him of Mordecai's people, and Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, who were in the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

¹⁵ Like a roaring lion and a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a poor people.

⁵ The king answered and said to the _⌊astrologers_⌋,* "The command from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its explanation,* then you will be broken into pieces and your houses will be laid in ruins.

¹² Because of this the king became angry, and he became very much enraged, and he said that all the wise men of Babylon are to be destroyed.

¹⁹ Then Nebuchadnezzar was filled with anger and the image of his face was changed _⌊toward_⌋* Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, so he _⌊ordered and said_⌋* to heat up the one furnace seven times what was usual to heat it up. ²⁰ And he commanded _⌊the strongest men of the guards_⌋* who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and to throw them into the furnace of blazing fire.

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he* saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent soldiers* and* executed all the children in Bethlehem and in all the region around it from the age of two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined precisely from the wise men.

¹⁹ And when* Herod had searched for him and did not find him,* he questioned the guards and* ordered that they be led away to execution. And he came down from Judea to Caesarea and* stayed there.

¹⁷ But the midwives feared God, and they did not do as the king of Egypt had said to them. They let the boys live.

¹¹ He said, "This will be the custom of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots.

⁴⁵ But the army said to Saul, "Must Jonathan die, who accomplished this great victory in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, not a hair from his head will fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day." So the army ransomed Jonathan and he did not die.

¹⁷ And so then, know and _⌊consider_⌋* what you should do, for evil has been decided against our master and against all his household, and he is such _⌊a wicked man_⌋,* _⌊nobody can reason with him_⌋!"*

¹ It happened afterward that Absalom made himself a chariot with horses and fifty men running before him.

⁵ Now Adonijah the son of Haggith was exalting himself, saying, "I will be king," so he prepared for himself a chariot and horsemen and fifty men running before him.

¹³ So he _⌊again sent_⌋* a third time a commander of fifty and his fifty, and the commander of the third fifty went up and came and knelt down on his knees before Elijah and entreated him. He said to him, "O man of God, please let my life and the lives of your servants, these fifty, be precious in your eyes. ¹⁴ Behold, fire from heaven came down and consumed the first two commanders of fifty and their fifties, so then let my life be precious in your eyes."

²⁵ It happened that when he finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the royal guard and to the officers, "Come and kill them; let no man go free!" So _⌊they put them to the sword_⌋,* and the royal guard and the officers threw them out, then they went up to the citadel of the temple of Baal.

¹⁹ But Peter and John answered and* said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than God, you decide!

⁴⁰ And for the sons of Aaron you will make tunics, and you will make for them sashes and headdresses; you will make them for glory and for splendor.*

¹⁸ Now Samuel was serving before Yahweh, as a boy wearing a linen ephod.

²⁸ And I chose him from all the tribes of Israel to be a priest to me, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to bear an ephod before me. I gave to the house of your ancestor* all the offerings made by fire by the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

³⁰ Therefore,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh the God of Israel, 'though I solemnly said that your house and the house of your ancestor* would walk before me forever, but now,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me, I will treat with contempt! ³¹ Look, days are coming when I will cut off your _⌊strength_⌋* and the _⌊strength_⌋* of the house of your ancestor* _⌊so that no one in your house will live to old age_⌋.* ³² You will look at the distress of my dwelling place, despite all the good caused for Israel, but there will never be an old man in your household _⌊forever_⌋!* ³³ The only one I will not cut off from my altar is you.* Rather, to cause your eyes to fail and to cause your soul to grieve, _⌊all the members of your household_⌋* will die as men.*

³⁶ All the remainder of your household will come to bow down _⌊before_⌋* him for a bit of silver or a loaf of bread and will say, "Please assign me to one of the _⌊priestly offices_⌋* so that I can eat a morsel of bread." '"

¹² On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken against his household, _⌊from beginning to end_⌋.* ¹³ I will make him know that I am about to judge his household forever because of the iniquity that he knew, for his sons were bringing curses on themselves,* but he did not rebuke them. ¹⁴ Therefore I swore to the house of Eli that the iniquity of the house of Eli would not be atoned for* by sacrifice or by offering forever."

²¹ Then they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the command of the king in the courtyard of the house of Yahweh.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after filth.*

³ By their wickedness they make the king glad, and the officials by their treacheries.

¹⁶ For you have observed the regulations of Omri and all the works of the house of Ahab. And you have walked in their counsels, so that I am making you a desolation and your inhabitants an object of scorn. So you will bear the scorn of my people.

³ Her officials in her midst are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they leave nothing until the morning.

¹⁰ which I also did in Jerusalem, and not only did I lock up many of the saints in prison, having received authority from the chief priests, but also when* they were being executed, I cast my vote* against them.* ¹¹ And throughout all the synagogues I punished them often and* tried to force* them* to blaspheme, and because I* was enraged at them beyond measure, I was pursuing them* even as far as to foreign cities.

¹⁷ The city and all that is in it will be devoted to Yahweh; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house will live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.

²¹ And they utterly destroyed _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋* all who were in the city, both men and women, young and old, ox, sheep, and donkey.

³ So then, go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that is his! You must not spare him, but kill both man and woman, both child and nursing infant, both ox and sheep, both camel and donkey.'"

⁹ However, Saul and the army spared Agag and the best of the sheep and the cattle and the second best of the young fatlings and _⌊all that was valuable_⌋;* they were not willing to utterly destroy them. But all the possessions that were despised or worthless, they utterly destroyed.

¹ Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came trembling to meet David, and he said to him, "Why are you alone and there are no men with you?"

¹¹ So the king sent to summon Ahimelech the son of Ahitub the priest, and all his father's household, the priests who were at Nob. So all of them came to the king.

³² Anathoth, Nob, Ananiah,

³² _⌊This day_⌋* _⌊taking a stand_⌋* at Nob, he will shake his fist at the mountain of the daughter* of Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem.

¹⁴ The tumult of war will rise up against your people, and all your fortresses will be destroyed, as Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel; on the day of war mothers were dashed to pieces with their children.*

¹³ For judgment is merciless to the one who has not practiced mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

³³ The only one I will not cut off from my altar is you.* Rather, to cause your eyes to fail and to cause your soul to grieve, _⌊all the members of your household_⌋* will die as men.*

¹² A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh that same day, and his clothes were torn and earth was on his head.

⁶ _⌊Now when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled_⌋* to David at Keilah, he went down with an ephod in his hand.

⁹ When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod here."

⁷ Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring the ephod here for me." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

²⁵ Shiya was secretary, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests.

²⁶ To Abiathar the priest, the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your field, for _⌊you deserve to die_⌋,* but on this day I will not kill you, for you carried the ark of the Lord Yahweh before David my father, and because you endured hardship in all the hardship that my father endured." ²⁷ So Solomon banished Abiathar from being priest to Yahweh, thus fulfilling the word which Yahweh had spoken concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.

¹⁵ Then* the Sabeans _⌊attacked_⌋,* and they took them, and they slew the servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋.* But* I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁶ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The fire of God fell from the heavens, and it blazed up against the sheep and goats and against the servants, and it consumed them. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you." ¹⁷ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three divisions, and they made a raid on the camels, and they carried them away, and they struck your servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋,* but I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

¹⁹ And behold,* a great wind came from across the desert, and it struck the four corners of the house _⌊so that_⌋* it fell upon the young people, and they died. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

¹ Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came trembling to meet David, and he said to him, "Why are you alone and there are no men with you?" ² So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king charged me with a matter and said to me, 'No one must know anything about this matter on which I am sending you, with which I have charged you and the servants.'" ²⁶ To Abiathar the priest, the king said, "Go to Anathoth, to your field, for _⌊you deserve to die_⌋,* but on this day I will not kill you, for you carried the ark of the Lord Yahweh before David my father, and because you endured hardship in all the hardship that my father endured."

⁹ "Then they will hand you over to persecution and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations* because of my name.

²⁸ And I give them eternal life, and they will never perish _⌊forever_⌋,* and no one will seize them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them* to me, is greater than all, and no one can seize them* from the Father's hand. ³⁰ The Father and I are one."

²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you: 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also.

² _⌊They will expel you from the synagogue_⌋,* but an hour is coming that everyone who kills you will think they are offering service to God. ³ And they will do these things because they do not know the Father or me.

¹² When I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given to me, and guarded them,* and none of them has perished except the son of destruction, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled.

⁹ in order that the word that he had spoken would be fulfilled: "Those whom you have given to me—I have not lost anyone of them."*

¹ Therefore, since* we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, putting aside every weight and _⌊the sin that so easily ensnares us_⌋*, let us run with patient endurance the race that has been set before us, ² fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. ³ For consider the one who endured such hostility by sinners against himself,* so that you will not grow weary in your souls and give up.
