¹ _⌊One day_⌋* Jonathan the son of Saul said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come and let us go over to the garrison of the Philistines which is over there." But he did not tell his father. ² Now Saul was staying at the outskirts of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree that was in Migron, and the troops that were with him were about six hundred men. ³ Now Ahijah, the son of Ahitub (the brother of Ichabod), the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh, was carrying an ephod. The troops did not know that Jonathan had gone. ⁴ Now between the passes where Jonathan sought to go over to the garrison of the Philistines there was a crag of rock _⌊on one side_⌋* and a crag of rock _⌊on the other_⌋.* The name of the one was Bozez and the name of the other was Seneh. ⁵ The one crag on the north was opposite Micmash and the other on the south was opposite Geba. ⁶ So Jonathan said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come, let us go over to the garrisons of these uncircumcised; perhaps Yahweh will act for us, for there is no hindrance for Yahweh to save by many or by few." ⁷ And _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* said, "Do all that is in your heart _⌊that you are inclined to do_⌋.* _⌊I am with you all of the way_⌋!* ⁸ Then Jonathan said, "Look, we are about to go over to the men; and we will show ourselves to them. ⁹ If they say to us: 'Wait until we reach you,' _⌊then we will stand as we are_⌋* and not go up to them. ¹⁰ But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us." ¹¹ So the two of them showed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, and the Philistines said, "The Hebrews are coming out from the holes in which they have hidden themselves." ¹² Then the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come up to us and we will show you something!" Then Jonathan said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come up after me, for Yahweh has given them into the hand of Israel!" ¹³ So Jonathan went up on his hands and his feet, with _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* after him. They fell before Jonathan and then _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* would kill them after him. ¹⁴ So was the first attack in which Jonathan and _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* killed about twenty men within about half of a furrow in an acre of an open field. ¹⁵ Then there was terror* in the camp, in the open field, and among all the army of the garrison. Even the _⌊raiders_⌋* trembled. The earth shook, and it became _⌊a very great panic_⌋.* ¹⁶ And the lookouts of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin saw _⌊that_⌋* the multitude _⌊surged back and forth_⌋.* ¹⁷ Saul said to the troops that were with him, "Please call the roll and see who has gone from us." So they called the roll _⌊and found that_⌋* Jonathan and _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* were not present. ¹⁸ Then Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring near the ark of God"* (for the ark of God was _⌊at that time_⌋* with the _⌊Israelites_⌋).* ¹⁹ While* Saul was still speaking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines _⌊increased more and more_⌋,* so Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand!" ²⁰ Then Saul and all the troops who were with him were assembled on command and came up to the battle, and look! Each Philistine's sword was against his friend; and there was a very great confusion. ²¹ The Hebrews who had been for the Philistines _⌊previously_⌋,* who had gone up with them into the camp all around, even they _⌊joined the Israelites_⌋* who were with Saul and Jonathan. ²² All the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, so even they pursued them closely in the battle. ²³ So on that day Yahweh delivered Israel, and the battle shifted to Beth Aven. ²⁴ Now the men of Israel were hard pressed on that day, because Saul had made the army take an oath, saying, "Cursed be the man who eats any food until evening, when I will have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the army tasted any food. ²⁵ (Now all the people of the land used to go into the forest, for there was honey on the surface of the ground.) ²⁶ When the army came to the forest, look! There was honey flowing, but no one put his hand to his mouth, for the army was afraid of the solemn oath. ²⁷ However, Jonathan had not heard about the oath of his father with the army, so he extended the end of the staff which was in his hand, and he dipped it into the honeycomb.* Then he put his hand to his mouth and his eyes gleamed.* ²⁸ Then a man from the army informed him and said, "Your father made the army swear a solemn oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who eats food today,'" so the army is exhausted. ²⁹ Then Jonathan said, "My father has brought trouble on the land! See now that my eyes have brightened because I have tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ _⌊How much more could have been done_⌋* if the troops had eaten freely today from the plunder of their enemies that they had found! For now the loss among the Philistines is not great." ³¹ They defeated the Philistines that day from Micmash to Aijalon, and the troops were very weary. ³² Then the troops took the plunder: they took sheep and cattle and _⌊calves_⌋* and slaughtered them on the ground and the troops ate them all with the blood. ³³ So they reported it to Saul, saying, "Look! The troops are sinning against Yahweh by eating the animals with the blood!" And he said, "You have dealt treacherously! Roll to me a large stone _⌊today_⌋!"* ³⁴ Then Saul said, "Disperse yourselves among the troops and say to them, 'Bring to me each one his ox and each his sheep and slaughter them in this place and eat, but do not sin against Yahweh by eating the animals with the blood.'" So all the troops brought them, each leading his ox in his hand that night, and slaughtered it there. ³⁵ Then Saul built an altar to Yahweh; _⌊it was the first altar he built_⌋* to Yahweh. ³⁶ Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and let us plunder them until the morning light, and let us not leave alive a man among them." So they said, "Do all that is good in your eyes." But the priest said, "Let us draw near to God here." ³⁷ So Saul inquired of God, "Should I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into the hand of Israel?" But he did not answer him on that day. ³⁸ Then Saul said, "Come here, all you leaders of the people, _⌊so that we find out_⌋* what the sin was this day. ³⁹ For as Yahweh lives, who delivers Israel, I swear that even if it is in Jonathan my son, _⌊he will certainly die_⌋!"* But nobody from all the army answered him. ⁴⁰ Then he said to all Israel, "You will be _⌊on one side_⌋,* and I and my son Jonathan will be _⌊on the other_⌋."* And the army said to Saul, "Do what is good in your eyes." ⁴¹ Then Saul said to Yahweh the God of Israel, "_⌊Render a decision perfectly_⌋."* Jonathan and Saul were chosen by lot and the people went out. ⁴² Then Saul said, "Let them cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan," and Jonathan was chosen. ⁴³ So Saul said, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathan told him and said, "I _⌊merely tasted_⌋* a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die." ⁴⁴ Then Saul said, "So may God do to me and _⌊more_⌋,* you will certainly die today, Jonathan!" ⁴⁵ But the army said to Saul, "Must Jonathan die, who accomplished this great victory in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, not a hair from his head will fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day." So the army ransomed Jonathan and he did not die. ⁴⁶ Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their place. ⁴⁷ So Saul took the kingship over Israel, and he fought all around against his enemies, against Moab, against the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* against Edom, against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. He inflicted punishment against all who rebelled. ⁴⁸ He acted bravely and defeated the Amalekites and rescued Israel from the hand of those who plundered it. ⁴⁹ Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malki-Shua; the names of his two daughters were as follows: the name of the firstborn was Merab and the younger was Michal. ⁵⁰ The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz, and the name of the commander of his army was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. ⁵¹ Now Kish was the father of Saul, but Ner, the father of Abner, was the son of Abiel. ⁵² Warfare was severe against the Philistines all the days of Saul. Whenever Saul saw _⌊anyone who was a mighty warrior_⌋* or _⌊any brave man_⌋,* he _⌊conscripted him into his service_⌋.*

²⁷ Gideon took ten men from his servants, and he did just as Yahweh told him;* and because he was too afraid of his _⌊father's family_⌋* and the men of the city to do it during the day, he did it during night.

⁶ And the Spirit of Yahweh rushed upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one might tear apart a male kid goat (_⌊he was bare-handed_⌋).* But he did not tell his father and mother what he had done.

² He chose for himself three thousand from Israel. Two thousand of these were with Saul at Micmash in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. He sent away the rest of the people, each to his tent.

²² _⌊So_⌋* on the day of battle, there was not a sword or a spear found in the hands of all the army that was with Saul and Jonathan, but _⌊Saul and his son Jonathan had them_⌋.*

¹ _⌊When_⌋* he finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan became attached to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. ² Saul took him on that very day and did not allow him to return to his father's house. ³ Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. ⁴ Jonathan stripped off the robe _⌊that he was wearing_⌋* and gave it to David, along with his fighting attire,* and even his sword, his bow, and his belt.

¹⁹ Then she said to her servants, "Go ahead before me; look, I am coming after you," but she did not tell her husband Nabal.

⁴ Then David said to him, "_⌊How did things go_⌋?* Please tell me." He answered, "_⌊When_⌋* the army fled from the battle, and many of the people fell; also, Saul and Jonathan his son died." ⁵ Then David asked the young man who was reporting to him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan died?"

²⁵ How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle; Jonathan lies slain on your high places. ²⁶ _⌊I am distressed_⌋* over you, my brother Jonathan. you were very dear to me; your love was more wonderful to me than the love of women.

⁵ Do not put faith in a friend; put no trust in a close friend. Guard the doorways of your mouth from the one who lies in your lap.

¹⁵ Then Samuel got up and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul mustered the people who were found with him, about six hundred men. ¹⁶ Saul and Jonathan his son and the army that remained with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, and the Philistines encamped at Micmash.

²⁸ He has come to Aiath, he has passed through Migron; at Micmash he deposited his baggage. ²⁹ They crossed over the pass; Geba is a place of overnight lodging for us. Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul has fled.

²⁶ And you will make two gold rings, and you will place them on the two ends of the breast piece, on its edge that is _⌊on the other side_⌋* of the ephod, _⌊to the inside_⌋.* ²⁷ And you will make two rings and put them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod below at its front near its seam above the waistband of the ephod. ²⁸ And they will tie the breast piece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a blue cord to be on the waistband of the ephod, and the breast piece will not come loose from the ephod. ²⁹ And Aaron will bear the names of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the breast piece of judgment on his heart, when he comes to the sanctuary, for a remembrance before Yahweh continually. ³⁰ And you will put the Urim and the Thummim on the breast piece of judgment, and they will be on the heart of Aaron when he comes before Yahweh, and Aaron will bear the judgment of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on his heart before Yahweh continually. ³¹ "And you will make the robe of the ephod totally of blue yarn. ³² And the opening for his head will be in the middle of it; its opening will have an edge all around, the work of a weaver; it will be like the opening of a sturdy garment for it, so that it will not be torn.

²⁸ And I chose him from all the tribes of Israel to be a priest to me, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to bear an ephod before me. I gave to the house of your ancestor* all the offerings made by fire by the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

²¹ She called the boy Ichabod,* saying, "The glory has departed from Israel," referring to the capture of the ark of God and concerning her father-in-law and husband.

⁹ But Doeg the Edomite, who was stationed among the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Yahweh for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine." ¹¹ So the king sent to summon Ahimelech the son of Ahitub the priest, and all his father's household, the priests who were at Nob. So all of them came to the king. ¹² Saul said, "Listen please, son of Ahitub." He said, "Here I am, my lord."

²⁰ But, one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, whose name was Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.

²³ Now the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Micmash.

⁷ And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and between your offspring after you, throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant to be as God for you and to your offspring after you. ⁸ And I will give to you and to your offspring after you _⌊the land in which you are living as an alien_⌋,* all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting property. And I will be to them as God." ⁹ And God said to Abraham, "Now as for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you, throughout their generations. ¹⁰ This is my covenant which you shall keep, between me and you, and also with* your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. ¹¹ And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up?

⁴ And Yahweh said to Gideon, "There are still too many troops; bring them down to the water, and I will sift through them* for you there. For whomever I say to you, 'This one will go with you,' he will go with you; and for all whom I say to you, 'This one will not go with you,' he will not go." ⁵ So he brought down the troops to the water, and Yahweh said to Gideon, "You must separate everyone who laps up the water to drink with his tongue like a dog from those _⌊who kneel_⌋."* ⁶ The number of those lapping up the water with their hand to their mouth was three hundred men; all the rest of the troops kneeled to drink the water. ⁷ And Yahweh said to Gideon, "I will deliver you with the three hundred men lapping up the water; I will give Midian into your hand, so let the other troops go, each to his own place.

¹⁸ And he was very thirsty, and he called to Yahweh and said, "You gave this great victory into the hand of your servant, but now I must die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?"

²⁶ Now David had spoken to the men who were standing with him, saying, "What will be done for the man who defeats this Philistine and removes the disgrace from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he defies the battle lines of the living God?"

³⁶ Your servant has struck down both the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he defied the battle lines of the living God."

²⁰ Do not tell it in Gath; do not proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.

¹² Perhaps Yahweh will look _⌊in my eye_⌋* and repay good for me in place of his curse this day.

⁴ Perhaps Yahweh your God will hear all of the words of the chief commander whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to insult the living God, and he will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the remainder who are left.'"

¹¹ Then Asa cried out to Yahweh his God. And he said, "O Yahweh, there is none with you to help between the great and the powerless. Help us, O Yahweh our God, for we rely upon you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O Yahweh, you are our God! Let no man prevail against you!"

¹ Not to us, O Yahweh, not to us, but to your name give glory, because of your loyal love, because of your faithfulness. ² Why should the nations say, "Where, _⌊pray tell_⌋,* is their God?" ³ But our God is in the heavens; all that he desires, he does.

²³ Thus says Yahweh,
"The wise man must not boast in his wisdom, and the warrior must not boast in his might, the wealthy man must not boast in his wealth.

²⁶ Egypt, Judah, and Edom, and the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and Moab, and all those who are trimmed to the side, those who live in the desert,* for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart."

¹⁵ Hate evil and love good and establish justice in the gate; perhaps Yahweh, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

³ Seek Yahweh, all you afflicted of the land who have fulfilled his law; seek righteousness; seek humility. Perhaps you will be concealed on the day of the anger of Yahweh.

⁶ And he answered and said to me, "This is the word of Yahweh to Zerubbabel, saying, 'Not by strength and not by power, but only by my Spirit,' says Yahweh of hosts.

²⁶ But Jesus looked at them* and* said to them, "With human beings this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

³¹ What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

¹¹ Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, the so-called uncircumcision by the so-called circumcision in the flesh, made by hands, ¹² that you were at that time apart from Christ, alienated from the citizenship of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, not having hope, and without God in the world.

³ For we are the circumcision, the ones who worship* by the Spirit* of God and boast in Christ Jesus and do not put confidence in the flesh,

⁷ When these signs come to you, do for yourself what your hand finds to do, for God will be with you.

³ Nathan said to the king, "Go and do all that is in your heart, for Yahweh is with you."

⁷ Yahweh of hosts is with us; our high stronghold is the God of Jacob. Selah

²³ Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'In those days ten men from _⌊all the nations of every language_⌋* will take hold of the hem of a Judean man,* saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you!" '"

⁹ And that night Yahweh said to him, "Get up; go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. ¹⁰ But if you are afraid, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, ¹¹ and you will hear what they say; and afterward _⌊you will have courage_⌋,* and you will go down against the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men* that were in the camp. ¹² Now the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and all the people of the east were lying in the valley, like a great multitude of locusts; their camels were without number, as numerous as the sand that is on the shore of the sea. ¹³ When Gideon came, a man was recounting a dream* to his friend, and he said, "Behold, _⌊I had a dream_⌋;* a round loaf of barley bread was tumbling into the camp of Midian, and it came up to the tent, it struck it, and it fell and turned it upside down so that the tent fell." ¹⁴ His friend answered him and said, "This cannot be anything except the sword of Gideon son of Jehoash, a man of Israel; God has given Midian and the entire camp into his hand."

¹³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are going out to draw water. ¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master."

³⁶ Then Gideon said to God, "In order to see that you will deliver Israel by my hand, just as you have said, ³⁷ I will place a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and all of the ground is dry, I will know that you will deliver Israel by my hand, just as you have said." ³⁸ And it was so. He arose early the next day and squeezed the fleece, and he wrung out dew from the fleece, a full drinking bowl of water. ³⁹ And Gideon said to God, "_⌊Do not let your anger burn_⌋* against me; let me speak once more. Please let me test once more with the fleece; let the fleece be dry, and let there be dew on the ground." ⁴⁰ And God did so that night; only the fleece was dry, and dew was on all the ground.

¹⁴ And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, 'Please, offer your jar that I may drink' and who says, 'Drink—and I will also water your camels,' she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master."

³⁶ Then Gideon said to God, "In order to see that you will deliver Israel by my hand, just as you have said,

¹¹ and you will hear what they say; and afterward _⌊you will have courage_⌋,* and you will go down against the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men* that were in the camp.

¹¹ "Ask for a sign for yourself from Yahweh God; make it deep as Sheol or make it high as above." ¹² But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not put Yahweh to the test." ¹³ Then he said, "Hear, house of David! Is it too little for you to make men weary, that you should also make my God weary? ¹⁴ Therefore the Lord himself will give you* a sign. Look! the virgin* is with child and she is about to give birth to a son, and she shall call his name 'God with us.'

² The hand of the Midianites* prevailed over Israel; because of the presence of the Midianites,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋* made for themselves hiding places that were in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that it was _⌊too difficult_⌋* for them, because the army was hard pressed, the people hid themselves in the caves, in the thorn bushes, in the cliffs, in the vaults* and in the wells.

²² All the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, so even they pursued them closely in the battle.

²⁶ And the man knelt down and worshiped Yahweh. ²⁷ And he said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld* his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master's brother."

⁴² Then today I came to the spring, and I said, 'O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, _⌊if you would please make my journey successful_⌋,* upon which I am going.

⁴⁸ And I knelt down and worshiped Yahweh, and I praised Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right way, to take the daughter of the brother of my master for his son.

¹⁴ And Deborah said to Barak, "Get up! This is the day that Yahweh has given Sisera into your hand. Has Yahweh not gone out before you?" So Barak went out from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him.

¹⁵ When Gideon heard the recounting of the dream* and its interpretation, he bowed down and returned to the camp of Israel; and he said, "Get up, for Yahweh has given the camp of Midian into your hand."

¹⁰ But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us."

⁴³ So the Philistine said to David, "Am I a dog, that you are coming to me with sticks?" Then the Philistine cursed David by his gods. ⁴⁴ The Philistine said to David, "Come to me so that I can give your flesh to the birds of heaven and to the wild animals of the field!"

¹⁴ Abner said to Joab, "Let the young men come up and fight in our presence." And Joab said, "Let them come up." ¹⁵ So they came forward and passed by in number: twelve for Benjamin and for Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve from the servants of David. ¹⁶ Then each seized his _⌊opponent_⌋* by the head and each thrust his sword in the side of his opponent, so they fell together. So they* called the name of that place Helkath Hazzurim,* which is in Gibeon. ¹⁷ Then the battle _⌊became increasingly fierce_⌋* on that day, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated before the servants of David.

²⁴ _⌊And it shall be_⌋* that when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then pay attention, for then Yahweh has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines."

⁸ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu king of Israel, saying, "Come let us meet _⌊face-to-face_⌋."*

⁷ And you shall pursue your enemies, and they shall fall by the sword _⌊before you_⌋.* ⁸ And five of* you shall pursue a hundred, and a hundred of* you shall pursue a myriad;* and your enemies shall fall by the sword _⌊before you_⌋.*

⁷ "Yahweh will cause your enemies _⌊who rise up against you to be defeated before you_⌋;* on one road* they shall come out against you, but on seven roads* they shall flee _⌊before you_⌋.*

¹⁰ One of your men put to flight a thousand, for Yahweh your God is fighting for you, just as he promised you.

²⁹ For with you I can charge a troop, and with my God I can scale a wall.

³⁴ extinguished the effectiveness of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong from weakness, became mighty in battle, put to flight enemy battle lines.

⁵ Then they set out on their journey, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were all around them, so that they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

¹⁸ And Mount Sinai was all wrapped in smoke because Yahweh went down on it in the fire, and its smoke went up like the smoke of a smelting furnace, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

³⁶ As for* the ones who remain among you, I will bring* fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight _⌊before_⌋* a sword, and they shall fall, but* there shall not be a pursuer. ³⁷ And they shall stumble over _⌊one another_⌋* as _⌊from before_⌋* a sword, but* there shall not be a pursuer; and _⌊you shall have no resistance_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* your enemies.

⁹ and said to the men, "I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that dread of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away in fear because of your presence.

²¹ And each stood _⌊in his place_⌋* all around the camp, and all the camp ran, and they cried out as they fled.

¹⁷ The _⌊raiders_⌋* went out from the camp of the Philistines in three divisions. One division turned on the road* to Ophrah toward the land of Shual.

⁶ Now the Lord had caused the camp of the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots, the sound of horses, and the sound of a great army. So they said _⌊to one another_⌋,* "Look, the king of Israel has hired the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to come against us!" ⁷ So they got up and fled at dusk and left their tents, their horses, their donkeys, and the camp as it was, and they fled for their lives.

¹¹ "Sudden terrors terrify him all around, and they chase him at his heels.

⁵ There _⌊they are very fearful_⌋* because God is with the generation of the righteous.

⁶ Then his face changed and his thoughts terrified him, and _⌊his hip joints gave way_⌋* and _⌊his knees knocked together_⌋.*

⁶ And you are going to hear about wars and rumors of wars. See to it that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is not yet.

⁵⁰ And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and* gave up his* spirit. ⁵¹ And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth shook and the rocks were split.

²² When they blew the three hundred trumpets, Yahweh set the sword of each one against his neighbor throughout the whole camp, and the camp* fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, up to Abel Meholah, the border by Tabbath.

²⁰ Then Saul and all the troops who were with him were assembled on command and came up to the battle, and look! Each Philistine's sword was against his friend; and there was a very great confusion.

²² And _⌊when_⌋* they began with singing and praise, Yahweh set ambushes against the people* of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir who were coming against Judah. And they were defeated ²³ when the people* of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to destroy and demolish them. And when the inhabitants of Seir had made an end of them, each helped to destroy his comrade. ²⁴ And Judah came against the watchtower of the wilderness. And they looked at the crowd, and behold, corpses were lying on the ground. There was none who had escaped. ²⁵ When Jehoshaphat came with his people to plunder their booty, they found among them in abundance possessions, corpses, and precious items. And they took plunder for themselves _⌊until they could carry no more_⌋.* And they were three days in plundering the booty, for it was abundant.

⁷ Let them run away like water that runs off. When he bends the bow, let his arrows be as though they were cut off.*

² As smoke is driven off, you will drive them off. As wax melts before fire, the wicked will perish before God.

² "And I will stir up _⌊Egyptians_⌋* against _⌊Egyptians_⌋,* and each one will fight against his brother and each one against his neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.

²¹ He will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will ask for him by the decision* of the Urim before Yahweh. On _⌊his command_⌋* they will go out, and at _⌊his command_⌋* they will come in, both he and all of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with him, the entire community."

¹⁸ Then the _⌊Israelites_⌋* got up and went up to Bethel, and they inquired of God, saying, "Who will go up first for the battle against the descendants* of Benjamin?" And Yahweh said, "Judah will go first."

²³ The _⌊Israelites_⌋* went up and wept before Yahweh until evening and inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Should we again draw near from the battle against the descendants* of Benjamin, our relatives?"* And Yahweh said, "Go up against them."*

²⁷ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* inquired of Yahweh (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there, ²⁸ and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was standing _⌊before it_⌋* to minister in those days), saying, "Should we go out once more to battle against the descendants* of Benjamin our relatives,* or should we stop?" And Yahweh said, "Go up tomorrow; I will give them* into your hand."

³ When the army* came back to the camp, the elders of Israel asked, "Why has Yahweh defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of Yahweh to us from Shiloh so that it may come into our midst and deliver* us from the hand of our enemies." ⁴ So the army sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of hosts who sits between the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. ⁵ Now when the ark of the covenant of Yahweh arrived at the camp, all Israel _⌊let out a loud shout_⌋* so that the earth shook.

² Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it to the temple of Dagon and placed it beside Dagon.

¹ The men of Kiriath Jearim came and brought up the ark of Yahweh, and they brought it to the house of Abinadab in Gibeah. They consecrated Eleazer his son to guard the ark of Yahweh.

⁷ Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring the ephod here for me." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. ⁸ And David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Should I pursue after this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?" He said to him, "Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them, and you will certainly rescue them."

¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are living in the booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping on the surface of the open field; and I, shall I go to my house to eat and to drink and to sleep with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I surely will not do this thing."

²⁴ Suddenly Zadok was there, and all of the Levites with him, carrying the ark of the covenant of God. They set the ark of God down, and Abiathar offered sacrifices until all the people passed out of the city. ²⁵ The king said to Zadok, "Let the ark of God return to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of Yawheh, he will let me return and let me see him in his dwelling place. ²⁶ But if he says, 'I take no pleasure in you,' then _⌊I am ready_⌋.* Let him do to me that which is good in his eyes.

¹⁴ So the leaders* took from their provisions, but _⌊they did not ask direction from Yahweh_⌋.*

¹¹ But Samuel said, "What have you done?" Saul said, "Because I saw that the army _⌊was scattering_⌋* from me and you did not come _⌊at the appointed time_⌋* and that the Philistines had gathered at Micmash,

²⁴ Now the men of Israel were hard pressed on that day, because Saul had made the army take an oath, saying, "Cursed be the man who eats any food until evening, when I will have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the army tasted any food.

¹³ They quickly forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.

¹⁶ Therefore the Lord Yahweh says this:
"Look! I am laying a stone in Zion, a _⌊tested_⌋* stone, a precious cornerstone, a founded foundation:
'The one who trusts will not _⌊panic_⌋.'*

¹⁶ And the lookouts of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin saw _⌊that_⌋* the multitude _⌊surged back and forth_⌋.*

²³ when the people* of Ammon and Moab rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to destroy and demolish them. And when the inhabitants of Seir had made an end of them, each helped to destroy his comrade.

¹⁹ The land was burned through the wrath of Yahweh of hosts, and the people became like fire fuel. _⌊People had no compassion toward each other_⌋.* ²⁰ They devoured on the right but still were hungry and devoured on the left but they were not satisfied. Each one devoured the flesh of his arm, ²¹ Manasseh devoured Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh; together they were against Judah. In all of this his anger has not turned away, and still his hand is stretched out.

²³ And the men of Israel were called from Naphtali, from Asher, and from all of Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian.

⁴ But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him and they said to him, "Send the man back so that he might return to his place where you have assigned him! But he will not go down with us into the battle, so that he does not become an adversary to us in the battle. By what could this fellow make himself favorable to his lord? Is it not with the heads of these men?

⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the towns and fled. Thus the Philistines came and lived in them.

³⁰ And Yahweh saved Israel on that day from the hand* of Egypt, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the shore of the sea.

¹⁸ And when Yahweh raised leaders* for them, Yahweh was with the leader,* and he delivered them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the leader,* for Yahweh was moved by their groaning because of their persecutors and oppressors.

⁵ And the Philistines assembled to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and an army as numerous as sand which is on the seashore. And they came up and encamped at Micmash, east of Beth Aven.

²⁷ Yahweh did not decree to blot out the name of Israel from under the heavens, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Jehoash.

⁶ For I do not trust my bow, and my sword cannot give me victory. ⁷ Rather you have saved us from our enemies,* and have humiliated those who hate us. ⁸ In God we boast all the day, and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

⁷ But I will have pity on the house of Judah and I will save them by Yahweh their God, and will not deliver them by bow, sword, war, horses, or horsemen.

²⁹ Anyone devoted who is devoted from _⌊human beings_⌋* cannot be ransomed—he shall surely be put to death.

² Israel made a vow to Yahweh, and they said, "If you will surely give this people into our* hand, then we* _⌊will destroy_⌋* their cities."

¹⁵ 'Cursed be the man that makes a divine image or a cast image, which is a detestable thing for Yahweh, the work of the hand of a skilled craftsman, and then sets it in a hiding place.'* And _⌊all the people shall respond_⌋,* 'Amen.' ¹⁶ 'Cursed be the one who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all of the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁷ 'Cursed be the one who moves the boundary marker of his neighbor.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁸ 'Cursed be the one who misleads a blind person on the road.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁹ 'Cursed be the one who deprives the alien, the orphan, and the widow of justice.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁰ 'Cursed be the one who lies with the wife of his father, because _⌊he has dishonored his father's bed_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²¹ 'Cursed be the one who lies with any kind of animal.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²² 'Cursed be the one who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²³ 'Cursed be the one who lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁴ 'Cursed be the one who strikes down his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁵ 'Cursed be the one who takes a bribe _⌊to murder an innocent person_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁶ 'Cursed be the one _⌊who does not keep_⌋* the words of this law, to observe them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'"

¹⁷ The city and all that is in it will be devoted to Yahweh; only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in the house will live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent. ¹⁸ As for you, keep away from the things* devoted to destruction so that you do not take them and bring about your own destruction, making the camp of Israel an object for destruction, bringing trouble upon it. ¹⁹ But all of the silver and gold, and the items of bronze and iron, are holy to Yahweh, and they must go to Yahweh's treasury."

²⁶ And Joshua swore at that time, saying, "Cursed is anyone before Yahweh who gets up and builds Jericho, this city. At the cost of his firstborn he will lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates."

²⁸ And it happened, when Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites* to forced labor, but they never totally drove them out.

² "When long hair hangs loosely in Israel, when the people willingly offer themselves, bless Yahweh!

³⁰ And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh, and he said, "If indeed you will give the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* into my hand, ³¹ whatever* comes out from the doors of my house to meet me when I return safely from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* will be Yahweh's, and I will offer it as a burnt offering."

¹ The men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, saying, "None of us will give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife." ² And the people of Bethel came and sat there until evening before God, and they lifted their voices and _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.* ³ And they said, "Why, Yahweh, God of Israel, has it happened today in Israel that one tribe is lacking from Israel?" ⁴ On the next day the people rose early, and they built there an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. ⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said, "Who in the assembly has not come up from all the tribes of Israel to Yahweh?" For a solemn oath was taken concerning whoever did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah, saying, "He will certainly be put to death."

²⁷ However, Jonathan had not heard about the oath of his father with the army, so he extended the end of the staff which was in his hand, and he dipped it into the honeycomb.* Then he put his hand to his mouth and his eyes gleamed.* ²⁸ Then a man from the army informed him and said, "Your father made the army swear a solemn oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who eats food today,'" so the army is exhausted. ²⁹ Then Jonathan said, "My father has brought trouble on the land! See now that my eyes have brightened because I have tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ _⌊How much more could have been done_⌋* if the troops had eaten freely today from the plunder of their enemies that they had found! For now the loss among the Philistines is not great."

⁴⁷ the God who executed vengeance for me, and subdued peoples under me,

⁹ With a mouth, the godless shall destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.

² For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.

²² If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed. O Lord, come!*

⁸ And I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from this land to a good and wide land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites* and the Hittites* and the Amorites* and the Perizzites* and the Hivites* and the Jebusites.*

²⁷ And they told him,* "We came to the land that you sent us, and it is flowing of milk and honey; this is its fruit.

²⁸ lest the people of the land from which you brought us out from there say, "Because Yahweh was not able to bring them to the land that he _⌊promised_⌋* to them and because of his hatred toward them, he has brought them out to kill them in the desert."

⁴ Now John himself had his clothing made from camel's hair and a belt made of leather around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the district around the Jordan were going out to him,

² The same fate comes to everyone:
to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked,* to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths.

²⁹ Then Jonathan said, "My father has brought trouble on the land! See now that my eyes have brightened because I have tasted a little of this honey.

⁴³ So Saul said, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathan told him and said, "I _⌊merely tasted_⌋* a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die."

¹² They gave him a slice of fig cake and two raisin cakes; he ate and _⌊this revived him_⌋,* because he had not eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights.

²⁶ Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is the righteous who gives way before the wicked.

²⁵ And Joshua said, "Why did you bring us trouble? Yahweh will bring you trouble on this day." And all Israel stoned them* with stones;* and they burned them with fire after they stoned them with stones.

¹⁸ He said, "I did not throw Israel into confusion; rather you and the house of your father have by forsaking the commands of Yahweh when you went after the Baals!

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

¹² Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh, on the day Yahweh gave the Amorites* over to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and he said in the sight of Israel,
"Sun in Gibeon, stand still, and moon, in the valley of Aijalon."

⁴² Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah,

⁴ Only you shall not eat _⌊raw flesh with blood in it_⌋.*

¹⁷ This is* a lasting statute for your generations in all your dwellings: you must not eat any fat or any blood.'"

²⁶ And in any of your* dwellings, you must not eat any blood _⌊belonging to_⌋* birds* or* domestic animals.* ²⁷ Any person* who eats any blood, that person* shall be cut off from his people.'"

¹⁰ And if there is _⌊anyone_⌋* from the house of Israel or* from the alien who is dwelling in their midst who eats any blood, then* I will set my face against the person who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from among his people. ¹¹ Indeed* the flesh's life is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your lives, because it is the blood with the life that makes atonement. ¹² _⌊Therefore_⌋* I said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* '_⌊None of you_⌋* may eat blood, nor* may the alien who is dwelling in your midst eat blood.' ¹³ "And if there is _⌊anyone_⌋* from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* or* from the alien who is dwelling in their midst who hunts a wild game animal or a bird that may be eaten, then* he shall pour out its blood, and he shall cover it with the soil. ¹⁴ Indeed,* the life of all flesh, its blood, is in its life, so* I said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* 'You may not eat the blood of any flesh, because the life of all flesh is its blood; anyone who eats it must be cut off.'

²⁶ " 'You* must not eat anything with the blood; you* shall not practice divination, nor shall you* interpret signs.

¹⁶ Only the blood you must not eat, but on the ground you must pour it like water.

²³ Only, be sure not to eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the meat. ²⁴ You shall not eat it, but on the ground you shall pour it out like water.

¹⁹ Why did you not listen to the voice of Yahweh and fall with shouting on the plunder? You have done evil in the sight of Yahweh!"

²⁵ Therefore say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "You eat blood in your meat, and you raise your eyes to your idols and you pour out blood, and yet you want to take possession of the land?*

²⁰ but we should write a letter to them to abstain from the pollution of idols and from sexual immorality and from what has been strangled and from blood.

²⁹ that you abstain from food sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what has been strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you* keep yourselves from _⌊these things_⌋* you will do well. Farewell.

⁵ Hypocrite! First remove the beam of wood from your own eye and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye!

¹ Therefore you are without excuse, O man, every one of you who passes judgment. For in that which you pass judgment on someone else, you condemn yourself, for you who are passing judgment are doing the same things.

⁴ On the next day the people rose early, and they built there an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.

⁹ So Samuel took a single _⌊nursing lamb_⌋* and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to Yahweh. Then Samuel cried out to Yahweh on behalf of Israel, and Yahweh answered him.

¹² So Samuel took a single stone and put it between Mizpah and Shen, and he named it Ebenezer and said, "Up to here Yahweh has helped us."

¹⁷ Then _⌊he returned_⌋* to Ramah, because his house was there, and there he judged Israel, and he built an altar to Yahweh there.

¹⁴ Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces, and Judah has multiplied fortified cities; but I will send fire on his cities and it will devour her strongholds.

⁵ maintaining a form of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid these people.

⁹ Joshua came upon them suddenly _⌊by marching up_⌋* all night from Gilgal. ¹⁰ And Yahweh threw them into panic before Israel, who* struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and pursued them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah. ¹¹ And as they were fleeing from Israel, they were on the slope of Beth-horon, and Yahweh threw huge stones from the heavens on them as far as Azekah; and more died by the hail stones than those whom the _⌊Israelites_⌋* killed by the sword. ¹² Then Joshua spoke to Yahweh, on the day Yahweh gave the Amorites* over to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and he said in the sight of Israel,
"Sun in Gibeon, stand still, and moon, in the valley of Aijalon." ¹³ And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on its enemies.
Is it not written in the scroll of Jashar? The sun stood still in the middle of the heaven and was not in haste to set for about a full day. ¹⁴ There has not been a day like this before it or after, that Yahweh listened to the voice of a man; for Yahweh fought for Israel.

¹⁹ But do not stay there; pursue after your enemies and attack them from the rear. Do not allow them to go into their cities, for Yahweh your God has given them into your hand."

¹⁴ And all the spoil and livestock of these cities the _⌊Israelites_⌋ took as booty; they struck the people with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* until they had destroyed them—they left behind no one who breathed.

¹¹ _⌊And the_⌋* next day Saul placed the people in three divisions. Then they came into the middle of the camp _⌊at the early morning watch_⌋* and struck down _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* until the heat of the day. It happened that the remainder were scattered _⌊so that no two among them remained together_⌋.*

³ Now Ahijah, the son of Ahitub (the brother of Ichabod), the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh, was carrying an ephod. The troops did not know that Jonathan had gone.

¹⁸ Then Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring near the ark of God"* (for the ark of God was _⌊at that time_⌋* with the _⌊Israelites_⌋).* ¹⁹ While* Saul was still speaking to the priest, the tumult in the camp of the Philistines _⌊increased more and more_⌋,* so Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand!"

²⁸ But as for me, the approach to God is for my good. I have set the Lord Yahweh as my refuge, in order to tell all your works.

¹ Hear this, house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and came out from the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of Yahweh, and _⌊invoke_⌋* the God of Israel, but not in truth and not in righteousness. ² For they call themselves _⌊after the holy city_⌋,* and they lean on the God of Israel— Yahweh of hosts is his name.

² Yet* they seek me day by day, and they desire the knowledge of my ways like a nation that _⌊practiced_⌋* righteousness, and had not forsaken the judgment of its God; they ask me for _⌊righteous judgments_⌋,* they desire the closeness of God.

⁵ Arise, and let us attack by night, and let us destroy her citadel fortresses."

⁷ For the lips of the priest should guard knowledge, and they should seek instruction* from his mouth, for he is the messenger of Yahweh of hosts.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded!

¹ After the death of Joshua, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Who will go up first for us against the Canaanites* to fight against them?"

²⁸ and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was standing _⌊before it_⌋* to minister in those days), saying, "Should we go out once more to battle against the descendants* of Benjamin our relatives,* or should we stop?" And Yahweh said, "Go up tomorrow; I will give them* into your hand."

²² So they inquired again of Yahweh, "_⌊Did the man come here_⌋?" * And Yahweh said, "Look, he is hiding himself among the baggage."

⁴ So David again inquired of Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him and said, "Get up, go down to Keilah, for I am giving the Philistines into your hand."

⁹ When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod here." ¹⁰ And David said, "O Yahweh, God of Israel, your servant has clearly heard that Saul is seeking to come to Keilah to destroy the city because of me. ¹¹ Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me into his hand? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? O Yahweh, God of Israel, please tell your servant!" And Yahweh said, "He will come down." ¹² Then David said, "Will the rulers of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?" And Yahweh said, "They will deliver you."

⁶ And Saul inquired of Yahweh, but Yahweh did not answer him, not by dreams or by the Urim* or by the prophets.

¹⁹ And David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go up to the Philistines? Will you give them into my hands?" Yahweh said to David, "Go up, for _⌊I will certainly give_⌋* the Philistines into your hand."

²³ So David inquired of Yahweh, but he said, "You shall not go up. Rather, go around to their rear and come to them from opposite the balsam trees.

⁵ Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "Please inquire for the word of Yahweh today."

¹⁵ When he came to the king, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-Gilead to the battle, or shall we refrain?" He said to him, "Go up and triumph, and Yahweh will give it into the hand of the king."

³ "Son of man,* these men took up their idols into their heart and _⌊they placed before themselves_⌋* a stumbling block of their guilt.* _⌊Should I really let myself be consulted by them_⌋?* ⁴ Therefore speak with them, and you must say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Every person from the house of Israel who brings up his idols into his heart and _⌊places before himself_⌋* a stumbling block of his guilt* and yet he comes to the prophet, I Yahweh, I will respond to him through this act* with respect to the multitude* of his idols, ⁵ so that I may take hold of the house of Israel by their heart, those who are estranged from me, all of them, through their idols.'

³ "Son of man,* speak with the elders of Israel, and you must say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Are you coming to consult me? _⌊As I live_⌋,* I will surely not allow myself* to be consulted by you!" ' _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁷ I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star will go out from Jacob, and a scepter will rise from Israel; it will crush the foreheads of Moab and destroy all the children of Seth.

¹¹ Israel has sinned and _⌊transgressed my covenant_⌋* that I commanded them. They have taken from the devoted things;* they have stolen and acted deceitfully, and they have put them among their belongings.

¹⁴ In the morning you will come forward, _⌊tribe by tribe_⌋,* and the tribe that Yahweh will select by lot will come forward by clans, and the clan that Yahweh selects by lot will come forward by families, and the family that Yahweh selects by lot will come forward one by one. ¹⁵ The one caught with the devoted things* will be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because _⌊he transgressed the covenant_⌋* of Yahweh, and because he did a disgraceful thing in Israel." '" ¹⁶ So* Joshua rose early in the morning and brought forward Israel, _⌊tribe by tribe_⌋,* and the tribe of Judah was selected by lot. ¹⁷ And he brought forward the clans of Judah and selected the clan of the Zerahites* by lot. Then he brought forward the clan of the Zerahites,* one by one, and Zabdi was selected by lot. ¹⁸ He brought forward his family, one by one, and Achan son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected by lot. ¹⁹ And Joshua said to Achan, "My son, please, give glory to Yahweh the God of Israel, and give him a doxology in court.* Tell me, please, what you have done; do not hide it from me." ²⁰ And Achan answered Joshua and said, "It is true. I have sinned against Yahweh the God of Israel, and this is what I did: ²¹ I saw among the spoil a beautiful robe from Shinar,* two hundred shekels of silver, and one bar of gold that weighed fifty shekels; I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, and the silver is under it." ²² Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there they were, hidden in his tent, and the silver was under it. ²³ And they took them from the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* And they spread them out before the presence of Yahweh. ²⁴ Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his cattle and donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and everything that was his, and they brought them to the valley of Achor.* ²⁵ And Joshua said, "Why did you bring us trouble? Yahweh will bring you trouble on this day." And all Israel stoned them* with stones;* and they burned them with fire after they stoned them with stones. ²⁶ Then _⌊they placed_⌋* on top of him a great pile of stones that remains to this day. And Yahweh _⌊turned from his burning anger_⌋,* and thus the name of that place to this day is called the valley of Achor.*

² And the leaders of all the people, all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand sword-bearing infantry.

¹⁹ But you today have rejected your God who always delivers you from all of your calamities and your distresses. You have said to him, 'No, but you must appoint a king over us!' So then present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your clans." ²⁰ So Samuel brought near all the tribes of Israel, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected by lot.

³ Then the troops said, "You will not go out, for _⌊if we must flee_⌋,* then _⌊they will not care about us_⌋;* even if half of us die, _⌊they will not care about us_⌋,* but now, you are like ten thousand of us. And so then, it is better for us that you be in the city to help."

⁹ The princes of the peoples are gathered together with the people of Abraham's God. For the shields of the earth belong to God. He is very exalted.

⁴ From them* the cornerstone will go out, from them* the tent peg, from them* the battle bow, from them* every ruler, all together.

⁴² Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures,
'The stone which the builders rejected, this has become _⌊the cornerstone_⌋.* This came about from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?*

²⁰ built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,*

⁴⁴ Then Saul said, "So may God do to me and _⌊more_⌋,* you will certainly die today, Jonathan!"

⁶ And Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan and swore, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* he will not be put to death!"

³¹ For _⌊as long as_⌋* the son of Jesse is alive on the earth, you and your kingdom will not be established! So then, send and bring him to me, for _⌊he will surely die_⌋!"*

¹⁶ Then the king said, "You must certainly die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's household!"

¹⁰ Then Saul swore to her by Yahweh, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊you will not be punished_⌋* for this thing."

⁵ Then _⌊the anger of David was kindled_⌋* against the man, and he said to Nathan, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* the man who has done this _⌊deserves to die_⌋!*

⁷ And _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* said, "Do all that is in your heart _⌊that you are inclined to do_⌋.* _⌊I am with you all of the way_⌋!*

³⁶ Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and let us plunder them until the morning light, and let us not leave alive a man among them." So they said, "Do all that is good in your eyes." But the priest said, "Let us draw near to God here."

¹⁵ Then the servants of the king said to the king, "According to all that my lord the king chooses, _⌊your servants are ready to act_⌋!"*

¹⁶ So* Joshua rose early in the morning and brought forward Israel, _⌊tribe by tribe_⌋,* and the tribe of Judah was selected by lot. ¹⁷ And he brought forward the clans of Judah and selected the clan of the Zerahites* by lot. Then he brought forward the clan of the Zerahites,* one by one, and Zabdi was selected by lot. ¹⁸ He brought forward his family, one by one, and Achan son of Carmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected by lot.

²⁰ So Samuel brought near all the tribes of Israel, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected by lot. ²¹ Then he brought near the tribe of Benjamin according to its families, and the family of Matri was selected by lot. Then Saul the son of Kish was chosen, and they sought him, but he could not be found.

³³ The lot will be cast into the lap, but all of its decisions are from Yahweh.

⁷ And they said _⌊to one another_⌋,* "Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this disaster has come on us!" And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

²⁴ And they prayed and* said, "You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show clearly which one of these two you have chosen

¹⁹ And Joshua said to Achan, "My son, please, give glory to Yahweh the God of Israel, and give him a doxology in court.* Tell me, please, what you have done; do not hide it from me."

²⁷ However, Jonathan had not heard about the oath of his father with the army, so he extended the end of the staff which was in his hand, and he dipped it into the honeycomb.* Then he put his hand to his mouth and his eyes gleamed.*

⁷ And they said _⌊to one another_⌋,* "Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this disaster has come on us!" And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. ⁸ So they said to him, "Please tell us whoever is responsible that this disaster has come upon us! What is your occupation? And from where do you come? What is your country? And from which people are you?" ⁹ And he said to them, "I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land." ¹⁰ Then the men _⌊were greatly afraid_⌋,* and they said to him, "What is this you have done?" because they* knew that he was fleeing _⌊from the presence of_⌋* Yahweh (because he had told them).

²⁴ And _⌊about three months later_⌋* it was told to Judah, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the whore, and now, behold, she has conceived by prostitution." And Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned."

¹⁷ Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. So may Yahweh do to me, _⌊and even more, unless_⌋* death _⌊separates you and me_⌋!"*

³⁹ For as Yahweh lives, who delivers Israel, I swear that even if it is in Jonathan my son, _⌊he will certainly die_⌋!"* But nobody from all the army answered him.

²² _⌊May God severely punish the enemies of David_⌋* and again do thus if I leave behind _⌊anything that is his_⌋* until the morning, not even _⌊one male_⌋!"*

⁹ Thus _⌊may God punish Abner_⌋,* _⌊if I do not accomplish what Yahweh has sworn to David_⌋;*

³¹ He also brought out the people who were in it and put them to the saws and to the iron picks and to the iron axes, and he sent them to the place of the brickmakers. Thus he used to do to all the cities of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and he and all of the army returned to Jerusalem.

¹³ To Amasa you shall say: 'Are you not my bones and my flesh? _⌊May God punish me_⌋* if you are not the commander of my army before me forever, in place of Joab.'"

¹⁶ If you find honey, eat what is sufficient for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it out.

²³ So on that day Yahweh delivered Israel, and the battle shifted to Beth Aven.

⁵ He put his life in his hand and attacked the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great victory for all of Israel, and you saw it and rejoiced! Now why should you sin against innocent blood by killing David without cause?"

¹¹ Then she said, "Please may the king remember Yahweh your God, _⌊to prevent the increase of blood avengers who kill_⌋,* so that they not wipe out my son." He said, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* surely not one hair shall fall from your son to the ground."

⁵² Solomon said, "If he is a son of noble character, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, but if evil is found in him, then he will die."

¹¹ And behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the word of Yahweh, and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the governor of the house of Judah, in all matters of the king, and the Levites shall be before you as officials. Be strong and do well! May Yahweh be with the upright."

²⁷ Therefore you gave them into the hand of their enemy, and they brought trouble to them. Then in the time of their trouble they cried out to you, and you heard from the heavens, and according to your great compassions, you gave them saviors, and you saved them from the hand of their enemies.

³ I myself I have commanded my consecrated ones, I have also summoned my mighty warriors concerning my anger, the _⌊ones who exalt over_⌋* my majesty.

²⁰ For the tyrant shall be no more, and the scoffer shall come to an end. And all those lying in wait for evil shall be cut off; ²¹ those who mislead a person into sin with a word and set a trap for the _⌊arbitrator_⌋* in the gate and guide away the righteous by emptiness.

³⁰ And even the hairs of your head are all numbered!

¹⁸ Even a hair of your head will never perish!

²⁷ And when they* arrived and called the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith for the Gentiles.*

¹² And the whole group became silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul describing all the signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

¹⁹ And after* greeting them, he began to relate* _⌊one after the other_⌋* the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry.

³⁴ Therefore I urge you to take some food, for this is necessary for your preservation. For not a hair from your head will be lost."

¹⁸ For I will not dare to speak about anything except that which Christ has accomplished through me, resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles by word and deed,

⁹ For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.

¹ Now because we* are fellow workers, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain.

¹² Therefore my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. ¹³ For the one at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure, is God.

¹⁴ These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, because he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful."

¹⁴ And the armies that are in heaven, dressed in clean, white fine linen, were following him on white horses.

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you." ² But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition _⌊I will make a treaty_⌋* with you, by gouging out the right eye of each of you, so that I can make it a disgrace for all Israel." ³ So the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Leave us alone for seven days so that we may send messengers in all the territory of Israel, and if there is no deliverer for us, then we will come out to you." ⁴ When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, _⌊they reported these things to_⌋* the people. Then all the people lifted up their voices and wept. ⁵ _⌊Just then_⌋,* Saul was coming from the field behind the cattle. Saul said, "What is the matter with the people, that they are weeping?" So they recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh. ⁶ Then the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and _⌊he became very angry_⌋.* ⁷ So he took a yoke of oxen and cut them into pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, "Whoever is not going out after Saul and after Samuel, so will it be done to his oxen." Then the fear of Yahweh fell on the people and they went out as one man. ⁸ He mustered them at Bezek; the _⌊Israelites_⌋* were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah were thirty thousand. ⁹ They said to the messengers who had come, "Thus you will say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: 'Tomorrow deliverance for you will come _⌊when the sun is hot_⌋.'"* When the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced. ¹⁰ The men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you and you may do to us _⌊whatever seems good to you_⌋."* ¹¹ _⌊And the_⌋* next day Saul placed the people in three divisions. Then they came into the middle of the camp _⌊at the early morning watch_⌋* and struck down _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* until the heat of the day. It happened that the remainder were scattered _⌊so that no two among them remained together_⌋.* ¹² Then the people said to Samuel, "Who is the one who asked, 'Will Saul reign over us?' Give the men to us that we may kill them." ¹³ But Saul said, "No one will be put to death on this day, because _⌊today_⌋* Yahweh has provided deliverance in Israel."

² And so then here is the king walking about before you. Now I am old and gray, but my sons (look at them!) are with you; and I have walked about before you from my youth until this day.

¹ Saul was thirty* _⌊years old_⌋* at the beginning of his reign, and he reigned forty-two years* over Israel.

⁵² Warfare was severe against the Philistines all the days of Saul. Whenever Saul saw _⌊anyone who was a mighty warrior_⌋* or _⌊any brave man_⌋,* he _⌊conscripted him into his service_⌋.*

³ Then David struck down Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, when he went to restore his monument* at the Euphrates River.

⁶ When the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* saw that they had become odious to David, the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* sent word and hired Aram Beth-Rehob and Aram-Zobah, twenty thousand infantry; and they also hired the king of Maacah, a thousand men, and the men of Tob, twelve thousand men.

²³ God had also raised Rezon the son of Eliada as an adversary against him, who had fled from Hadadezer the king of Zobah, his master.

¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in the scroll and _⌊recite it in the hearing of_⌋* Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens."

¹⁹ _⌊And when_⌋* Yahweh your God gives rest to you from all your enemies from around about you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance to take possession of it, you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; you shall not forget!"

³ So then, go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that is his! You must not spare him, but kill both man and woman, both child and nursing infant, both ox and sheep, both camel and donkey.'" ⁴ Saul summoned the army and mustered them at Telaim; two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. ⁵ Then Saul came up to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the wadi.* ⁶ Saul said to the Kenites, "Go, leave! Withdraw from among the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you with them. You have shown loyal love to all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* when they came up from Egypt." So the Kenites left from among the Amalekites. ⁷ Then Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as one goes to Shur which is _⌊east of_⌋* Egypt.

⁷ And the women sang as they danced, and they said,
"Saul has struck down his thousands, but David his ten thousands!" ⁸ _⌊Saul became very angry_⌋,* and _⌊this saying displeased him_⌋,* and he thought, "They have attributed to David ten thousands, but to me they have attributed thousands! _⌊What more can he have but the kingdom_⌋?"* ⁹ So Saul was watching* David with suspicion from that day onward. ¹⁰ _⌊On_⌋* the next day, the evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he prophesied in the middle of the house. Now David was playing the lyre with his hand on that day _⌊as usual_⌋,* and the spear was in Saul's hand. ¹¹ Then Saul hurled the spear and thought, "_⌊I will pin David to the wall_⌋."* But David eluded him twice. ¹² _⌊Now Saul was threatened by the presence of David_⌋* because Yahweh was with him, but had departed from Saul. ¹³ So Saul removed him _⌊from his presence_⌋,* and made him commander of a thousand, _⌊so he* marched in and out at the front of the army_⌋.* ¹⁴ And David was achieving success in all his ways and Yahweh was with him, ¹⁵ but when Saul saw that he was very successful, _⌊he was severely threatened by him_⌋.* ¹⁶ However, all of Israel and Judah were loving David, for he was going forth and marching ahead of them. ¹⁷ Then Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you as your wife. Only be _⌊a brave warrior_⌋* for me and fight the battles of Yahweh." For Saul thought, "My hand will not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him." ¹⁸ But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and who are my relatives, the clan of my father in Israel, that I should be a son-in-law to the king?" ¹⁹ _⌊But_⌋* at the time Saul's daughter Merab was to be given to David, she was given instead to Adriel the Meholathite as wife. ²⁰ Now Saul's daughter Michal loved David, so they told Saul, and the matter _⌊pleased him_⌋.* ²¹ And Saul thought, "I will give her to him, so that she may be a snare for him and the hand of the Philistines may be against him." So Saul said to David, "For a second time you can become my son-in-law today."

⁴⁴ (Now Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from Gallim.)

² And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul.

¹³ He* said, "Good. _⌊I will make a covenant with you_⌋.* I am asking only one thing from you: You shall not see my face unless you bring Michal the daughter of Saul when you come to see _⌊me_⌋."* ¹⁴ Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul, saying, "Give me my wife Michal whom I betrothed to myself* for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines." ¹⁵ So Ish-Bosheth sent and took her from her husband, from Paltiel the son of Laish.* ¹⁶ But her husband went with her, _⌊weeping all along_⌋* after her as far as Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, "Go and return." So he returned.

²⁰ When David returned to bless his household, Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David. She said, "How the king of Israel honored himself today _⌊by uncovering himself_⌋* before the eyes of the maids of his servants, _⌊as the total exposure of a worthless one_⌋."* ²¹ So David said to Michal, "In the presence of Yahweh who chose me _⌊over_⌋* your father and _⌊over_⌋* his household, to appoint me as leader over the people of Yahweh, over Israel, I have celebrated before Yahweh. ²² I will demean myself again more than this, and I will be abased in my eyes, but with the maids whom you mentioned, with them I will be honored." ²³ So for Michal the daughter of Saul, she had no child until the day of her death.

³³ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

³⁹ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

⁵⁵ Now when Saul saw David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, "Whose son is this young man, Abner?" And Abner said, "As your soul lives, O king, I do not know."

⁸ But Abner the son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

²⁷ When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside to the middle of the gate to speak with him in private. Then he struck him in the stomach there and he died, _⌊for he had shed the blood of Asahel his brother_⌋.*

¹ Now there was a man from Benjamin whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjaminite, _⌊a very wealthy man_⌋.*

²¹ Saul answered and said, "Am I not a Benjaminite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the humblest of all the families of the tribes of Benjamin? Why do you speak to me _⌊in this way_⌋?"*

¹ When Samuel grew old he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.

¹¹ He said, "This will be the custom of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and his horsemen, and they will run before his chariots.
