²³ And Aaron took Elisheba the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, for himself as a wife, and she bore for him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

¹ "And bring near to you Aaron, your brother, and his sons with him from the midst of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* to serve as priests for me—Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron.

¹ And Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu each took his censer, and they put fire in them and placed incense on it;* then* they presented _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh illegitimate fire, which he had not commanded them. ² So* fire went out _⌊from before_⌋* Yahweh, and it consumed them so that* they died _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh. ³ Therefore* Moses said to Aaron, "This is what Yahweh spoke, saying, 'Among those who are close to me I will show myself holy, and _⌊in the presence of_⌋* all the people I will display my glory.'"* So* Aaron was silent. ⁴ Then* Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan the sons of Uzziel, Aaron's uncle, and he said to them, "Come forward.* Carry your brothers from _⌊the front of_⌋* the sanctuary to _⌊outside the camp_⌋."* ⁵ So* they came forward,* and they carried them _⌊outside the camp_⌋* in their tunics, just as Moses had ordered. ⁶ Then* Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "You must not let your hair hang loosely, and you must not tear your garments, so that* you will not die and he* will be angry with all the community. But* your brothers, all the house of Israel, may weep because of _⌊the burning that Yahweh caused_⌋,*

¹ And to Moses he said, "Go up to Yahweh—you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy from the elders of Israel—and you will worship at a distance.

⁹ And Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy from the elders of Israel went up.

⁹ And you will gird Aaron and his sons with sashes and wrap headdresses on them. And priesthood will be theirs as a lasting rule, and _⌊you will ordain Aaron and his sons._⌋*

² So* fire went out _⌊from before_⌋* Yahweh, and it consumed them so that* they died _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh.

¹² Then* Moses spoke to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "As for the remaining parts,* take the remainder of the grain offering from Yahweh's offerings made by fire and eat it, the unleavened bread, beside the altar, because it is _⌊a most holy thing_⌋.*

⁴ Nadab and Abihu died _⌊before Yahweh_⌋* when they presented a strange fire _⌊before Yahweh_⌋* in the desert of Sinai, and _⌊they had no children_⌋.* Eleazar and Ithamar served as priest during the presence of Aaron their father.

³⁹ Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers that the ones who were burned presented, and they hammered them out thinly as plating for the altar; ⁴⁰ it was a memorial for the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* so that _⌊no strange man_⌋* who is not from _⌊the offspring_⌋* of Aaron should approach the presence of Yahweh to burn a smoke offering;* he will not be like Korah and his company, just as Yahweh had spoken to him by the hand of Moses.*

⁷ But you with your sons will keep your priesthood to perform your priestly duties for everything at the altar* and for _⌊the area behind the curtain_⌋.* I give you the priesthood as a gift, but the stranger who approaches will be put to death."

⁶¹ But Nadab and Abihu died when they presented strange fire _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh.

¹ Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came trembling to meet David, and he said to him, "Why are you alone and there are no men with you?"

⁹ But Doeg the Edomite, who was stationed among the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse going to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Yahweh for him and gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine." ¹¹ So the king sent to summon Ahimelech the son of Ahitub the priest, and all his father's household, the priests who were at Nob. So all of them came to the king. ¹² Saul said, "Listen please, son of Ahitub." He said, "Here I am, my lord." ¹³ Then Saul said to him, "Why did you conspire against me, you and the son of Jesse, when you gave to him bread and a sword, and by inquiring of God for him so that he might arise against me to ambush me as has been done this day?" ¹⁴ But Ahimelech answered the king and said, "And who among all your servants is as faithful as David? He is the son-in-law of the king who moves quickly to safeguard you and is honored in your house. ¹⁵ Only today I began to inquire of God for him. Far be it from me that _⌊the king should impute anything against his servant_⌋* or against my father's household, for your servant has not known any of this matter, little or much." ¹⁶ Then the king said, "You must certainly die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's household!" ¹⁷ So the king said to the runners who were stationed around him, "Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because _⌊they also support David_⌋* and because they knew that he was fleeing and _⌊did not disclose it to me_⌋."* But the servants of the king were not willing to raise their hand to attack the priests of Yahweh. ¹⁸ Then the king said to Doeg, "You turn and attack the priests!" So Doeg the Edomite turned and attacked the priests himself, and on that day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod. ¹⁹ And _⌊he put to the sword_⌋* Nob, the city of the priests, from man to woman, from child to infant, and ox and donkey and sheep;* all _⌊to the sword_⌋.* ²⁰ But, one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, whose name was Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. ²¹ Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of Yahweh. ²² Then David said to Abiathar, "I knew on that day that Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would certainly tell Saul. _⌊I am responsible for the deaths of all your father's household_⌋!* ²³ Stay with me! Do not fear, because he who seeks my life seeks your life. You are in good care with me."

¹⁷ Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests and Seraiah was scribe.

²⁵ Shiya was secretary, and Zadok and Abiathar were priests.

³⁵ Then the king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king appointed Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.

⁴ Eleazar fathered Phinehas; Phinehas fathered Abishua; ⁵ Abishua fathered Bukki; Bukki fathered Uzzi; ⁶ Uzzi fathered Zerahiah; Zerahiah fathered Meraioth; ⁷ Meraioth fathered Amariah; Amariah fathered Ahitub; ⁸ Ahitub fathered Zadok; Zadok fathered Ahimaaz;

⁵⁰ Now these are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son, ⁵¹ Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son, ⁵² Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, ⁵³ Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son.

²⁷ Jehoiada the chief officer of the house of Aaron, and with him, three thousand seven hundred. ²⁸ And Zadok, a young man, a mighty warrior of strength, and the house of his father: twenty-two commanders.

¹¹ Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab.

³⁹ And he left Zadok the priest and his brothers the priests before the tabernacle of Yahweh at the high place which was at Gibeon

⁶ And Shemaiah the son of Nethanel, the scribe, from the Levites, recorded them before the king, the princes, Zadok the priest, Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* of the priests and Levites, one father's house drawn by Lot for Eleazar and one drawn by lot for Ithamar.

¹¹ "Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, turned away my anger from among the _⌊Israelites_⌋* when he was jealous with my jealousy in their midst, and I did not destroy the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with my jealousy. ¹² Therefore say, 'Behold, I am giving to him my covenant of peace, ¹³ and it will be for him and his _⌊offspring_⌋* after him a covenant of an eternal priesthood because he was jealous for his God and made atonement for the _⌊Israelites_⌋.'"*

⁶ Of the sons of Merari: Asaiah the chief and two hundred and twenty of his brothers. ⁷ Of the sons of Gershom: Joel the chief and one hundred and thirty of his brothers. ⁸ Of the sons of Elizaphan: Shemaiah the chief and two hundred of his brothers. ⁹ Of the sons of Hebron: Eliel the chief and eighty of his brothers. ¹⁰ Of the sons of Uzziel: Amminadab the chief and one hundred and twelve of his brothers. ¹¹ Then David summoned Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and the Levites Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel, and Amminadab. ¹² And he said to them, "You are the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* for the Levites. Sanctify yourselves and your brothers and bring up the ark of Yahweh, the God of Israel, to the place I have established for it.

²⁴ These were the sons of Levi according to the house of their fathers, the heads of the _⌊families_⌋,* according to their enrollment, by the number of the names, according to their head count, who were to do the work of the service of the house of Yahweh, from twenty years old and above.

¹⁰ and Joshua cast a lot for them at Shiloh before* Yahweh, and there he divided the land for the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* _⌊to each a portion_⌋.*

¹¹ Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the commander of the house of God;

⁸ And his officials contributed a freewill offering to the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, commanders of the house of God, gave to the priests two thousand six hundred Passover lambs and three hundred bulls.

¹¹ Seraiah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub—the leader of the house of God—

³³ The lot will be cast into the lap, but all of its decisions are from Yahweh.

⁷ And they said _⌊to one another_⌋,* "Come, let us cast lots so that we may know on whose account this disaster has come on us!" And they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

³ Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas,

¹ Now when it* was early morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus in order to put him to death.

²⁶ And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was added to serve* with the eleven apostles.

¹ And while* they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees approached them,

⁶ and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all those who were from the high priest's family.

²⁴ Now when both the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed concerning them, as to what this might be.

¹⁶ And Zadok son of Ahitub and Abimelech son of Abiathar were priests, and Shavsha was secretary.

¹³ were over the porters and were directing all who worked _⌊on each task_⌋.* And some of the Levites were scribes, officials, and gatekeepers.

⁶ this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe skilled in the law of Moses, which Yahweh the God of Israel gave. The king granted him all his requests, for the hand of Yahweh was upon him.

¹ All of the people gathered as one to the public square before the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law* of Moses that Yahweh had commanded Israel.

¹⁹ And a scribe approached and* said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go!"

⁵² And he said to them, "For this reason every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of the house who brings out of his storeroom new things and old things."

¹ Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, ² saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on the seat of Moses.

⁴ This is the thing that you must do: one third of you priests and Levites _⌊coming off duty on the Sabbath_⌋* shall be gatekeepers at the entrances,

⁸ And the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And they each took his men who were _⌊coming off duty on the Sabbath_⌋* with _⌊the ones going out to duty on the Sabbath_⌋,* for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss the working groups.

⁴⁰ But let all things be done decently and according to proper procedure.

¹¹ Thus if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood, for on the basis of it the people received the law, what further need is there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek and not said to be according to the order of Aaron?

¹⁸ The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

¹² The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four. ¹³ The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was set apart to consecrate the most holy things. He and his sons were to burn offerings forever before Yahweh to serve him and to bless in his name forever. ¹⁴ But Moses the man of God and his sons were reckoned among the tribe of Levi.

¹⁶ The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief.

²⁴ Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, was commander over the treasuries.

¹⁷ And the sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah, the head. And Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

²⁵ And his brothers: from Eliezer were Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zikri his son, and Shelomoth his son.

²¹ And the sons of Izhar are Korah and Nepheg and Zikri.

¹⁹ And the sons of Kohath according to their clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

²⁷ _⌊To Kohath belonged_⌋* the clan of Amramites,* the clan of the Izharites,* the clan of the Hebronites,* and the clan of the Uzzielites;* these were the clans of the Kohathites.*

¹⁸ The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the chief.

²⁶ That Shelomoth and his brothers were over all the treasuries of the sanctified objects that King David and the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* to the commanders of thousands and hundreds and the commanders of the army had dedicated.

¹⁹ The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

²⁰ Zechariah, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaseiah, and Benaiah were to play on harps according to Alamoth;

²¹ The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish.

¹⁹ And the sons of Merari are Mahli and Mushi. These are clans of the Levites according to their genealogies.*
