¹ Now these are the ones who came to David at Ziklag while he was still shut up because _⌊of Saul_⌋,* the son of Kish. And they were the mighty warriors helping with the war. ² They were armed with the bow, able to shoot right-handed or left-handed, slinging stones or shooting arrows with the bow; they were kinsmen of Saul from Benjamin. ³ The leader was Ahiezer, then Jehoash, sons of Shemaah the Gibeonite; Jeiel and Pelet, sons of Azmaveth; Beracah; Jehu the Anathothite; ⁴ Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty warrior among the thirty who was over the thirty;* Jeremiah; Jahaziel; Johanan; Jozabad the Gederathite; ⁵ * Eluzai; Jerimoth; Bealiah; Shemariah; Shephatiah the Hariphite; ⁶ Elkanah, Isshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam the Korahites; ⁷ Joelah and Zebadiah, sons of Jeroham from the Gedor. ⁸ And from the Gadites, valiant mighty warriors, _⌊soldiers fit for war_⌋,* expert with shield and spear, defected to David at the fortress toward the wilderness. And _⌊they had faces like lions_⌋* and were swift as gazelles upon the mountains. ⁹ Ezer the chief, Obadiah second, Eliab third, ¹⁰ Mishmannah fourth, Jeremiah fifth, ¹¹ Attai sixth, Eliel seventh, ¹² Jehonan eighth, Elzabad ninth, ¹³ Jeremiah tenth, Macbannai eleventh. ¹⁴ These were the sons of Gad, leaders of the army. The smallest one was as a hundred, and the greatest as a thousand. ¹⁵ These were they who crossed the Jordan in the first month, when it was filled over its banks. And they put to flight all who were in the valley to the east and to the west. ¹⁶ And some of the sons of Benjamin and from Judah came to the fortress, to David. ¹⁷ And David went out _⌊to meet them_⌋* and answered and said to them, "If you come in peace to me, to help me, _⌊my heart will be joined with you_⌋,* but if you come to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong on my hands, may the God of our fathers see and pass judgment." ¹⁸ Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the thirty who said:
"We are yours, O David! And we are with you, O son of Jesse! Peace! Peace to you, and peace to those who help you, for your God helps you."
So David appointed them as heads of the troops. ¹⁹ And some Manassites deserted to David when he came with the Philistines to the battle against Saul, but he did not help them, for the rulers of the Philistines sent him away upon counsel, saying, "He will desert to his master Saul at the cost of our heads." ²⁰ When he went to Ziklag some Manassites deserted to him: Adnah, Jehozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, heads of the thousands that were for Manasseh. ²¹ And they themselves helped David against the troops, for all of them were mighty men of strength and were commanders in the army. ²² _⌊Day in and day out_⌋* they came to David to help him until there was a great army, like the army of God. ²³ And these are the numbers of the chiefs of those prepared for the army who came to David at Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him according to the word of Yahweh. ²⁴ The sons of Judah bearing shield and spear: six thousand eight hundred armed troops. ²⁵ From the men of Simeon, mighty warriors of strength for war: seven thousand one hundred. ²⁶ From the Levites: four thousand six hundred. ²⁷ Jehoiada the chief officer of the house of Aaron, and with him, three thousand seven hundred. ²⁸ And Zadok, a young man, a mighty warrior of strength, and the house of his father: twenty-two commanders. ²⁹ From the men of Benjamin, kinsmen of Saul, three thousand, and _⌊even still_⌋* the majority of them _⌊remained loyal_⌋* to the house of Saul. ³⁰ And from the men of Ephraim: twenty thousand eight hundred mighty warriors of strength, famous men in the house of their fathers. ³¹ And from the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand who were designated by name to come to make David king. ³² And from the men of Issachar: _⌊men who were skilled in understanding the times_⌋* to know what Israel should do. Their chiefs were two hundred, and all their kinsmen were under their command. ³³ From Zebulun, those who went out armed, equipped for battle with all the weapons of war: fifty thousand to help David _⌊with singleness of purpose_⌋.* ³⁴ From Naphtali: one thousand commanders; and those with them with shield and spear: thirty-seven thousand. ³⁵ From the Danites, those equipped for battle: twenty-eight thousand six hundred. ³⁶ And from Asher, those who went out armed and prepared for battle: forty thousand. ³⁷ And from beyond the Jordan, from the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all their weapons of war for battle: one hundred and twenty thousand. ³⁸ All these were men of war arrayed in battle line _⌊with a whole heart_⌋.* They came to Hebron to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel had one heart to make David king. ³⁹ And they were there with David three days, eating and drinking, for their kinsmen were prepared for them. ⁴⁰ And also their relatives, as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought food on donkeys, on camels, on mules, and on oxen—provisions of flour, cakes of figs, raisin cakes, wine and oil, cattle and sheep in abundance, for there was great joy in Israel.

² So David got up and crossed over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, the king of Gath. ³ David settled with Achish in Gath, he and his men, each with his household.* David took along his two wives Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋* and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. ⁴ And it was reported to Saul that David had fled to Gath, so _⌊he no longer searched for him_⌋.* ⁵ Then David said to Achish, "Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, then let them give me a place in one of the _⌊country towns_⌋* that I can live there. Why should your servant live in _⌊the royal city_⌋* with you?" ⁶ So Achish gave him Ziklag on that day. (Therefore, Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah until this day.)

¹ _⌊After_⌋* the death of Saul, David returned from defeating the Amalekites and he stayed at Ziklag two days.

¹⁰ when the one who told me, "Look, Saul is dead," _⌊thought that he was bringing good news_⌋,* I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, which was as my giving the news back to him.

³³ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

³⁹ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

¹⁰ Now these are the chiefs of the mighty men who were for David, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel to make him king according to the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.

¹⁹ And he said, "Far be it from me that I would do this before my God. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For _⌊at the risk of their lives_⌋* they brought it." And he was not willing to drink it. These things the three mighty men did.

²⁴ These things Benaiah son of Jehoiada did and had a name among the three mighty warriors. ²⁵ He himself was certainly distinguished among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David appointed him over his bodyguard.

¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjaminite and _⌊a left-handed man_⌋.* And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* sent a tribute to Eglon king of Moab _⌊through him_⌋.*

¹⁶ From all these troops were seven hundred well-trained* men _⌊who were left-handed_⌋;* each one could sling with a stone at a hair and not miss.

⁴⁹ Then David put his hand into the bag and took a stone from it and slung it. He struck the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

²⁹ From the men of Benjamin, kinsmen of Saul, three thousand, and _⌊even still_⌋* the majority of them _⌊remained loyal_⌋* to the house of Saul.

⁴ When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, _⌊they reported these things to_⌋* the people. Then all the people lifted up their voices and wept.

⁶ let seven men from his sons be given over to us, and we will execute them before Yahweh in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen one of Yahweh." Then the king said, "I will give them over."

²⁸ Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,

³³ Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite,

³ But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua did to Jericho and Ai,

¹⁷ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out and went to their cities on the third day (their cities were Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim). ¹⁸ But the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by Yahweh the God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured _⌊against their leaders_⌋.* ¹⁹ But all the leaders of the congregation said, "We have sworn to them by Yahweh the God of Israel, and so we cannot touch them. ²⁰ This we will do to them: we will let them live so that wrath will not be on us because of the oath we swore to them." ²¹ And the leaders* said to them, "Let them live." So they became woodcutters and water carriers for all the congregation, just as the leaders had said to them. ²² And Joshua summoned them and said, "Why have you deceived us saying, 'We are very far from you' when you are living among us? ²³ Therefore you are cursed; some of you will always be slaves as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God."

³⁶ Shaaraim, Adithaim, Gederah, and Gederothaim; fourteen cities and their villages.

¹⁵ And three of the thirty chiefs went down toward the rock to David at the cave of Adullam when the army of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

⁵⁸ Halhul, Beth Zur, Gedor,

¹⁸ And his Judahite wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these were the sons of Bithiah daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered married.

³⁹ And they went to the entrance of Gedor, up to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks.

¹⁴ David remained in the wilderness, in the strongholds, and in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him _⌊continually_⌋,* but God did not give him into his hand.

²⁹ * David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of En Gedi.

²² So David swore this on oath to Saul, and Saul went to his house, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

²³ Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives and were not separated in their death. They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.

¹⁸ The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab and Abishai and Asahel. Now Asahel was swift with his feet as one of the gazelles which is in the open field.

¹⁰ And he is also a _⌊valiant warrior_⌋,* whose heart is like the heart of the lion. He* will _⌊certainly melt_⌋* with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty warrior and those who are with him are _⌊valiant warriors_⌋.*

²⁰ Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of Ish-Hai, was a great man of deeds from Kabzeel. He struck down two sons of Ariel of Moab, and he went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit on a snowy day.

¹⁶ And David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.

²² And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was _⌊a strong man_⌋* from Kabzeel, one who did great deeds. He himself struck down two sons of Ariel of Moab. And he himself went down and struck down a lion within a pit on a snowy day.

¹⁶ And some of the sons of Benjamin and from Judah came to the fortress, to David.

⁵ Then Amaziah assembled the men of Judah and set them by _⌊families_⌋* under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. And he counted them from twenty years old and upward, and found them to be three hundred thousand chosen for going out to battle, able with spear and shield.

⁵ Save yourself like a gazelle from a hand, or like a bird from the hand of a fowler.

¹ The wicked flee, but no one pursues, but the righteous is bold like a lion.

¹⁴ Flee, my beloved! _⌊Be like a gazelle_⌋* or _⌊a young stag_⌋* upon _⌊the perfumed mountains_⌋!*

⁹ Go up, O horses, and drive madly, O chariots,* and let the warriors go forth; Cush and Put, who wield the small shield, and Lud, who wield and bend the bow.

⁸ And five of* you shall pursue a hundred, and a hundred of* you shall pursue a myriad;* and your enemies shall fall by the sword _⌊before you_⌋.*

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up?

¹⁵ When those carrying the ark came up to the Jordan, and the priests carrying the ark dipped their feet in the edge of the water (the Jordan was flowing over its banks during all the days of harvest),

¹⁸ And it happened that when the priests carrying the ark came up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet _⌊touched dry land_⌋,* the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and flowed over all its banks as before.

⁵ "If you run with foot soldiers and they have made you weary, then how will you compete with horses? If you have fallen in _⌊a peaceful land_⌋,* then how will you do in the thickets of the Jordan?

¹⁹ Look, like a lion he comes up from the thickets of the Jordan to _⌊a pastureland by a constantly flowing stream_⌋.* So _⌊I will chase him away hurriedly_⌋* from it. And whoever is chosen I will appoint over it. For who is like me, and who can summon me? And who is this, the shepherd who can stand _⌊before me_⌋?"*

⁴² If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac had not been with me, indeed now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God saw my misery and the labor of my hands and rebuked you last night."

⁵³ May the God of Abraham and the God of Nahor, the God of their father* judge between us." Then Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.

⁴ So Samuel did what Yahweh said. He came to Bethlehem, and the elders of the city came trembling to meet him. They said, "_⌊Have you come in peace_⌋?"*

¹ _⌊When_⌋* he finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan became attached to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

³ Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.

¹¹ Now, my father, see, yes, see, the hem of your robe in my hand! For _⌊when I cut_⌋* the hem of your robe I did not kill you. Know and _⌊realize_⌋* that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand. I did not sin against you, but you are hunting down my life to take it. ¹² May Yahweh judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you, but my hand will not be against you! ¹³ Just as the ancient proverb says, 'From the wicked, wickedness goes out,' but my hand will not be against you! ¹⁴ After whom did the king of Israel go out? After whom are you pursuing? After a dead dog? After one flea? ¹⁵ May Yahweh be the judge, and let him judge between me and you, and may he see and plead my case. _⌊May he vindicate me against you_⌋!"* ¹⁶ When David finished speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, "Is this your voice, my son David?" And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. ¹⁷ Then he said to David, "You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me the good, but I have repaid you the evil.

²³ Yahweh repays to each one his righteousness and his faithfulness, for Yahweh gave you into my hand today, but I was not willing to stretch out my hand against Yahweh's anointed. ²⁴ Look, as your life was precious in my eyes this day, may my life be great in the eyes of Yahweh, and may he rescue me from all trouble."

²⁰ Then Abner came to David in Hebron and with him were twenty men. David had prepared a feast for Abner and for the men who were with him. ²¹ And Abner said to David, "Let me get up and go and gather all of Israel to my lord the king, that they may _⌊make a covenant_⌋* with you so you can reign over all which your soul desires." So David dismissed Abner, and he left in peace. ²² And look, the servants of David and Joab came from the raid, and they brought much plunder with them. But Abner was not with David at Hebron, for he* had dismissed him, and he had gone in peace. ²³ When Joab and all the army that was with him came, they told Joab, "Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he sent him away, and he left in peace." ²⁴ Then Joab came to the king and said, "What have you done? Abner came here to you? Why have you dismissed him that he _⌊actually went away_⌋?* ²⁵ You know that Abner the son of Ner came to deceive you. He came to learn about your going out and coming in and to know all which you are doing."

¹³ Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, and she said, "_⌊Are you coming in peace_⌋?"* He said, "Peace."

²² When Joram saw Jehu, he asked, "Is it peace?" And he said, "What peace is there while the prostitutions of your mother Jezebel and her sorceries are numerous?"

¹⁵ Next he went from there and found Jehonadab the son of Recab to meet him. He greeted him and asked him, "_⌊Is your heart right with me as my heart is with you_⌋?"* Then Jehonadab said, "Yes, it is. Give your hand!" And he gave his hand and took him up to him on the chariot.

⁶ Rise up, O Yahweh, in your anger, and lift yourself up against the wrath* of my oppressors, and awake for me, since you have commanded judgment.

¹ For the music director; on the Sheminith.* A psalm of David.*
Save, O Yahweh, for the pious have ceased to be; for the faithful have vanished from among the children of humankind. ² They speak falseness _⌊to each other_⌋.* With flattering lips, with _⌊a double heart_⌋* they speak.

¹¹ Teach me, O Yahweh, your way, that I may walk in your truth. Unite my heart* to fear your name.

³⁹ And I will give to them one heart and one way, to revere me _⌊forever_⌋,* for good to them, and to their children after them.

² But Yahweh said to Satan,* "Yahweh rebukes you, O Satan!* Yahweh who has chosen Jerusalem rebukes you! Is this not a stick snatched from the fire?"

³² Now the group of those who believed were one heart and soul, and no one said anything of what belonged to him was his own, but all things were theirs in common.

¹⁰ Now I exhort you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all say the same thing and there not be divisions among you, and that you be made complete in the same mind and with the same purpose.

¹¹ Finally, brothers, rejoice, be restored, be encouraged, _⌊be in agreement_⌋*, be at peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you.

²⁷ Only lead your lives in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent I hear _⌊your circumstances_⌋*, that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one soul contending side by side for the faith of the gospel,

²³ who when he* was reviled, did not revile in return; when* suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,

⁹ But Michael the archangel, when he argued with the devil, disputing concerning the body of Moses, did not dare to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, "The Lord rebuke you!"

¹⁰ And the spirit of Yahweh came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and Yahweh gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and _⌊he prevailed over_⌋* Cushan-Rishathaim.

³⁴ So the Spirit of Yahweh _⌊took possession of_⌋* Gideon, and he blew on the trumpet, and the Abiezrites* were called to follow him.

²⁵ And the Spirit of Yahweh began to stir him in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

¹⁶ But Ruth said, "_⌊Do not urge_⌋* me to leave you or to return from _⌊following you_⌋!* For where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.

¹² He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and those _⌊to do his plowing_⌋* and to reap his harvest, and those to make weapons of war and the equipment for his chariots.

⁷ Then Saul said to the servants who were standing around him, "Please listen, _⌊Benjaminites_⌋!* Will the son of Jesse give you all fields and vineyards? Will he make all of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds?

⁵ So David sent ten young men, and David said to the young men, "Go up to Carmel and go to Nabal; _⌊you will greet him in my name_⌋.* ⁶ Then you must say to him, 'Long life to you, and _⌊may it go well with you, with your house, and with all that is yours_⌋.*

²⁸ Please forgive the transgression of your female servant, because Yahweh will certainly make a lasting house* for my lord, because my lord is fighting the battles of Yahweh, and evil will not be found in you _⌊as long as you live_⌋.* ²⁹ Should a man arise to pursue you and to seek your life, may the life of my lord be wrapped in the pouch* of the living with Yahweh your God. But as for the life of your enemy, he will sling it from within* the pocket of the sling!

² _⌊For some time_⌋,* when Saul was king over us, _⌊you were leading Israel in and out_⌋.* Yahweh had said to you, 'You shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the leader over Israel.'"

²¹ But Ittai answered the king and said, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋* and _⌊my lord the king lives_⌋,* surely in the place wherever my lord the king shall be, if for death or if for life, surely there your servant will be."

²⁵ Absalom had appointed Amasa in place of Joab over the army. Now Amasa was the son of a man whose name was Ithra the Israelite, _⌊who had married_⌋* Abigail the daughter of Nahash the sister of Zeruiah, the mother of Joab.

¹³ To Amasa you shall say: 'Are you not my bones and my flesh? _⌊May God punish me_⌋* if you are not the commander of my army before me forever, in place of Joab.'"

⁴ Then the king said to Amasa, "Summon for me the men of Judah within three days, _⌊and be here yourself_⌋."* ⁵ So Amasa went to summon Judah, but he tarried more than the appointed time which he had set for him. ⁶ Then David said to Abishai, "Now Sheba the son of Bicri will do us more harm than Absalom. You take the servants of your lord and pursue after him, lest he find fortified cities for himself and escape from us." ⁷ Then the men of Joab, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and all the mighty warriors went out after him; they went out from Jerusalem to pursue after Sheba the son of Bicri. ⁸ They were near the big rock that is in Gibeon, and Amasa came before them. Joab _⌊was dressed in his military clothing_⌋,* with a utility belt on him and a sword strapped to his waist in its scabbard. Now he went out, and it fell out.

²² But from the _⌊Israelites_⌋* Solomon did not make a slave, but they were the men of war, his officers, his commanders, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and his cavalry.

³² When he lifted up his face to the window, he asked, "Who is with me?" Two or three eunuchs looked down to him.

⁵ So whoever was over the house, and whoever was over the city, and the elders and the guardians sent to Jehu, saying, "We are your servants; all that you say to us, we shall do. We shall not make anyone a king. Do what is good in your eyes."

¹⁷ And Abigail bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.

¹⁷ And he put on righteousness like a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head, and he put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and he wrapped himself in zeal as in a robe.

²³ Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'In those days ten men from _⌊all the nations of every language_⌋* will take hold of the hem of a Judean man,* saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you!" '"

³⁰ The one who is not with me is against me, and the one who does not gather with me scatters.

⁶⁷ So Jesus said to the twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?"* ⁶⁸ Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

¹⁶ And all those who follow this rule, peace and mercy be on them and on the Israel of God.

²³ Peace to the brothers and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. ²⁴ Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ in incorruptibility.*

² The rulers of the Philistines were passing on according to hundreds and thousands, David and his men passing on at the rear with Achish. ³ Then the commanders of the Philistines said, "What are these Hebrews doing here?" And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, "Is this not David, the servant of Saul, the king of Israel, who has been with me _⌊for days and years_⌋?* I have not found anything threatening in him from the day of his desertion until this day!" ⁴ But the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him and they said to him, "Send the man back so that he might return to his place where you have assigned him! But he will not go down with us into the battle, so that he does not become an adversary to us in the battle. By what could this fellow make himself favorable to his lord? Is it not with the heads of these men? ⁵ Is this not David about whom they sing in the dances, saying,
'Saul has killed his thousands, but David his ten thousands'?" ⁶ So Achish called David and said to him, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* certainly you were honest, and _⌊I am pleased to have you marching with me_⌋* in the campaign.* For I have not found any wrong in you from the day you came to me until this day, but in the eyes of the rulers, you are not good. ⁷ So then, return and go in peace, so that you do not do _⌊something that displeases_⌋* the rulers of the Philistines." ⁸ Then David said to Achish, "But what have I done? And what have you found in your servant from the day that I _⌊entered your service_⌋* until this day, that I should not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?" ⁹ And Achish answered and said to David, "I know that you are good in my eyes, like an angel of God! However, the commanders of the Philistines have said, 'He must not go up with us into the battle.'

²¹ And you will select from all the people men of ability, fearers of God, trustworthy men, haters of dishonest gain,* and you will appoint such men over them as commanders of thousands, commanders of hundreds, commanders of fifties, and commanders of tens.

¹⁵ And so I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and then I appointed them as leaders over you as commanders of groups of thousands and commanders of groups of hundreds and commanders of groups of fifties and commanders of groups of tens as officials for your tribes.

¹⁷ As the firstborn of his ox, majesty _⌊belongs to him_⌋,* and his horns are the horns of a wild ox; with them he drives people together,* and they are the myriads of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh."

¹¹ So David set out early, he and his men, to leave in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines, but the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

¹ _⌊Now_⌋* when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. When they attacked Ziklag, they burned it with fire. ² They took captive the women* who were in it, _⌊from the youngest to the oldest_⌋.* They did not kill anyone, but carried them off and went on their way. ³ When David and his men came to the city, _⌊they saw_⌋,* and it was burned with fire, and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. ⁴ Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until there was not enough strength in them to weep. ⁵ Two of David's wives had been taken captive. Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋* and Abigail, the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. ⁶ And _⌊David was in a very precarious situation_⌋,* for the people spoke of stoning him, for the souls of all the people were bitter, each one over his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God. ⁷ Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring the ephod here for me." So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. ⁸ And David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Should I pursue after this band of raiders? Will I overtake them?" He said to him, "Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them, and you will certainly rescue them." ⁹ So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the Wadi* Besor, but the rest remained. ¹⁰ David pursued, he and four hundred men; but two hundred men stayed because they were too exhausted to pass over the Wadi Besor. ¹¹ Then they found an Egyptian man in the open country and brought him to David, and they gave him food and he ate; they also gave him water. ¹² They gave him a slice of fig cake and two raisin cakes; he ate and _⌊this revived him_⌋,* because he had not eaten food or drunk water for three days and three nights. ¹³ Then David said to him, "_⌊To whom do you belong_⌋,* and from where are you? The young man said, "I am an Egyptian young man, a servant of an Amalekite man, but my master abandoned me because I became ill three days ago. ¹⁴ We raided the Negev of the Kerethites and that which belongs to Judah and then the Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag with fire." ¹⁵ So David asked him, "Will you take me down to this band of raiders?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me and that you will not deliver me into my master's hand! Then I will take you down to this band." ¹⁶ So he took him down, and _⌊there they were_⌋,* spread out over the surface of all the land, eating and drinking and dancing because of all of the abundant plunder which they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah. ¹⁷ Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped _⌊except_⌋* four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.

²⁴ Now these were the heads of their fathers' households: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of strength, _⌊famous men_⌋,* heads of their fathers' households.

²¹ _⌊He was twice as renowned_⌋* among the three* and was their commander. But he did not attain to the three. ²² And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was _⌊a strong man_⌋* from Kabzeel, one who did great deeds. He himself struck down two sons of Ariel of Moab. And he himself went down and struck down a lion within a pit on a snowy day.

²⁰ When he went to Ziklag some Manassites deserted to him: Adnah, Jehozabad, Jediael, Michael, Jozabad, Elihu, and Zillethai, heads of the thousands that were for Manasseh.

² And when he saw them, Jacob said, "This is the camp of God!" And he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

¹⁴ And he said, "Neither. I have come now as the commander of Yahweh's army." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and _⌊he bowed down_⌋* and said to him, "What is my lord commanding his servant?"

² So David went up there _⌊along with_⌋* his two wives, Ahinoam _⌊from Jezreel_⌋* and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. ³ Also, David brought up his men who were with him, each _⌊with_⌋* his household, and they settled in the towns of Hebron. ⁴ Then the men of Judah came, and they anointed David there as king over the house of Judah, and they told David, "The men of Jabesh-Gilead buried Saul."

¹ The battle was prolonged between the house of Saul and the house of David, but David _⌊was growing stronger and stronger_⌋* while the house of Saul _⌊was becoming weaker and weaker_⌋.*

⁹ But* the righteous holds on to his way, and _⌊he who has clean hands_⌋* increases in strength.

² Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts.*

¹ Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "_⌊How long_⌋* will you mourn about Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel! Fill up your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have chosen a king for myself among his sons."

³ You will invite Jesse to the sacrifice and I will make known to you what you must do. You will anoint for me the one whom I tell you."

¹² So he sent and brought him. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and of _⌊handsome_⌋* appearance. And Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." ¹³ So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. Then the Spirit of Yahweh rushed upon David from that day _⌊on_⌋.* Then Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

¹⁸ So then, bring it about, because Yahweh had said to David, "Through the hand of David my servant I am about to save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies."

¹ So all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and they said, "Here we are, _⌊we are your flesh and blood_⌋.* ² _⌊For some time_⌋,* when Saul was king over us, _⌊you were leading Israel in and out_⌋.* Yahweh had said to you, 'You shall be the shepherd of my people Israel, and you will be the leader over Israel.'" ³ All the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David _⌊made a covenant_⌋* with them at Hebron in the presence of Yahweh; then they anointed David as king over Israel.

¹⁴ But he did not seek Yahweh. So Yahweh put him to death and turned over the kingship to David, the son of Jesse.

⁶ "But as for me, I have set my king on Zion, my holy mountain."

¹⁹ Formerly you spoke in a vision to your faithful ones, and said, "I have bestowed help on a mighty man; I have exalted one chosen from the people. ²⁰ I have found David, my servant. With my holy oil I have anointed him,

⁴ But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and took the commanders of the hundreds of the Carites and the runners, and he brought them to himself to the temple of Yahweh. Then he _⌊made_⌋* a covenant with them and made them swear in the house of Yahweh and showed them the son of the king.

⁹ So the commanders of hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and each took his men _⌊who went off duty on the Sabbath_⌋* and those _⌊who came on duty on the Sabbath_⌋,* and they came to Jehoiada the priest.

¹⁸ Then the commander of the imperial guard took Seraiah the chief priest, Zephaniah the second priest, and three of the threshold keepers.

⁴⁹ But Aaron and his sons made offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense for all the work of the most holy place, and to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded. ⁵⁰ Now these are the sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son, ⁵¹ Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son, ⁵² Meraioth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, ⁵³ Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son. ⁵⁴ And these are their dwellings according to their settlements within their borders: to the sons of Aaron of the clans of Kohathites, for the first lot was theirs, ⁵⁵ and they gave to them Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands, ⁵⁶ but the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh. ⁵⁷ To the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah with its pasturelands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands,

²⁰ And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the leader over them _⌊in time past_⌋;* Yahweh was with him.

¹⁷ For Levi: Hashabiah the son of Kemuel. For Aaron, Zadok.

¹⁷ Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests and Seraiah was scribe.

⁸ But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty warriors were David's; they were not with Adonijah.

³⁵ Then the king appointed Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king appointed Zadok the priest in place of Abiathar.

⁸ Ahitub fathered Zadok; Zadok fathered Ahimaaz;

⁵³ Zadok his son, Ahimaaz his son.

¹⁵ But the Levitical priests, the descendants* of Zadok, who cared for the responsibility of my sanctuary _⌊when the Israelites went astray_⌋* from me, they will approach me to serve me, and they will stand _⌊before me_⌋* to offer to me fat and blood," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

²³ Then he took his kinsmen with him and pursued after him, a seven-day journey, and he caught up with him in the hill country of Gilead.

⁸ But Abner the son of Ner, the commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-Bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim. ⁹ He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over Israel, all of it.

² They were armed with the bow, able to shoot right-handed or left-handed, slinging stones or shooting arrows with the bow; they were kinsmen of Saul from Benjamin.

⁴ The Nephilim were upon the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God went into the daughters of humankind, and they bore children to them.

¹ Then the allotment was made for the tribe of Manasseh, because he was the firstborn of Joseph. To Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, _⌊were allotted_⌋* Gilead and Bashan, because he was a warrior.* ² An allotment was made for the remaining descendants* of Manasseh, according to their families: For the children of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher, and Shemida—these were the male descendants* of Manasseh son of Joseph according to their families. ³ But Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, had no sons, only daughters. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. ⁴ They came before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders, saying, "Yahweh commanded Moses to give an inheritance to us among our kinsmen."* Therefore, according to the _⌊command of Yahweh_⌋* he gave them an inheritance among the kinsmen* of their father. ⁵ Thus ten shares fell to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is beyond the Jordan, ⁶ because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Gilead was allotted to the remaining descendants* of Manasseh. ⁷ The border of Manasseh was from Asher to Micmethath, which is opposite Shechem;* then the border goes to the south, to the inhabitants of En Tappuah. ⁸ The land of Tappuah _⌊belonged to Manasseh_⌋,* but Tuppuah on the border of Manasseh _⌊belonged to the descendants of Ephraim_⌋.* ⁹ Then the border goes down to the wadi* of Kanah to the south of the wadi. These cities belong to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh. The border of Manasseh is north of the wadi, and _⌊it ends_⌋* at the sea. ¹⁰ The south is Ephraim's, and the north is Manasseh's; the sea is their* border; Asher touches the north and on the east Issachar. ¹¹ In Issachar and Asher, Manasseh had Beth-shean and its villages, Ibleam and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of En-dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; the third is Napheth. ¹² But the descendants* of Manasseh were not able to take possession of these towns; the Canaanites* were determined to live in this land. ¹³ And it happened, when the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grew strong, they put the Canaanites* to forced labor but never drove them out completely. ¹⁴ The descendants* of Joseph spoke with Joshua, saying, "Why have you given us* one allotment and one share as an inheritance? We are many people, which Yahweh has blessed." ¹⁵ And Joshua said to them, "If you are many people, go up to the forest and clear a place there for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites* and Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you." ¹⁶ And the descendants* of Joseph said, "The hill country is not enough for us, and all of the Canaanites* living in the land of the valley have chariots* of iron, those in Beth-shean and its villages, and those in the Jezreel Valley." ¹⁷ And Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and Manasseh, "You are many people and have great power; you will not have one allotment only; ¹⁸ the hill country will be yours. Even though it is a forest, you will clear it, and it will be yours to its farthest borders. You will drive out the Canaanites,* even though they have iron chariots and are strong."

¹⁴ Issachar is a strong donkey, crouching between the sheepfolds.

¹³ And the king said to the wise men, _⌊the ones who know the times_⌋*—for it was the procedure of the king before all those who knew law and rights;*

⁸ The wisdom of the clever is understanding his ways, but the folly of fools is deceit.

⁵ The warrior of wisdom is in strength, and a man of knowledge is strong in power.

¹⁹ Wisdom gives more strength to the wise than ten rulers who are in the city.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good.

¹² And the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, called on that day
for weeping and mourning, and for baldness and girding _⌊with_⌋* sackcloth. ¹³ But look! Joy and gladness, the killing of oxen* and the slaughtering of sheep, the eating of meat and the drinking of wine! "Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!" ¹⁴ And it was revealed in my ears by Yahweh of hosts:
"Surely this sin will not be atoned for you until you die!" says the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.

⁶ and he will be the security of your times, an abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge.
The fear of Yahweh is his treasure.

⁹ The voice of Yahweh calls to the city (it is sound judgment to fear your name): "Hear, O staff!* Now who has appointed it?

³ and early in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy weather, because the sky is red and* darkening.' You know how to evaluate correctly the appearance of the sky, but you are not able to evaluate* the signs of the times.

⁵⁶ Hypocrites! You know how to evaluate the appearance of the earth and the sky, but how is it you do not know how to evaluate this present time? ⁵⁷ And why do you not also judge for yourselves what is right?

¹⁷ Because of this do not become foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

² They speak falseness _⌊to each other_⌋.* With flattering lips, with _⌊a double heart_⌋* they speak.

⁴⁷ Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Look! _⌊A true Israelite_⌋* in whom is no deceit!"

³³ From Zebulun, those who went out armed, equipped for battle with all the weapons of war: fifty thousand to help David _⌊with singleness of purpose_⌋.*

⁷ They run like mighty warriors,* they scale the wall like men of war; each goes on its own way, and they do not swerve from their paths.

³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The descendants* of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. ³⁷ The descendants* of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names* were changed), and Sibmah, and _⌊they renamed_⌋* the cities that they rebuilt. ³⁹ The descendants* of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites* who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. ⁴¹ And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.

¹² And so we took possession of this land at that time, from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and also half of the hill country of Gilead and its towns I gave to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites.* ¹³ And the remainder of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, the whole region of Argo. All of that area of Bashan was called the land of the Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the descendant* of Manasseh acquired the whole region of Argob, up to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called it,* that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, _⌊as it still is today_⌋.* ¹⁵ And also I gave Gilead to Makir. ¹⁶ And to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites* I gave, from Gilead up to the wadi* of Arnon, the middle of the wadi* as a boundary and up to the Jabbok _⌊River_⌋,* the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.*

⁷ Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh." ⁸ With it* the Reubenites,* and the Gadites* received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses Yahweh's servant gave to them: ⁹ from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and the city which is in the middle of the wadi, and all the plateau from Medeba up to Dibon; ¹⁰ and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who reigned in Heshbon up to the border of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* ¹¹ and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurite* and the Maacathites,* all of _⌊Mount Hermon_⌋,* and Bashan up to Salecah; ¹² all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei—he was left over from the survivors* of the Rephaim; these Moses had defeated and driven out. ¹³ But the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did not drive out the Geshurites* or the Maacathites;* Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this day. ¹⁴ Only the tribe of Levites* Moses did not give an inheritance; the offerings made by fire to Yahweh the God of Israel are their* inheritance, just as he promised to them.* ¹⁵ Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the descendants* of Reuben according to their families. ¹⁶ Their territory was from Aroer, which was on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plateau by Medeba; ¹⁷ Heshbon and its cities that are on the plateau; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon, ¹⁸ Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath, ¹⁹ Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth Shahar on the hill of the valley; ²⁰ Beth Peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth Jeshimoth; ²¹ all of the cities of the plateau, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who reigned in Heshbon and whom Moses defeated with the leaders of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon who dwelled in the land. ²² In addition to their slain, the _⌊Israelites_⌋* killed with the sword Balaam son of Beor, who practiced divination. ²³ And the border of the descendants* of Reuben was the Jordan and its banks.* This was the inheritance of the descendants* of Reuben according to their families, the cities, and their villages. ²⁴ Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of Gad, to the descendants* of Gad, according to their families. ²⁵ Their territory was Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* up to Aroer, _⌊which is east of Rabbah_⌋;* ²⁶ and from Heshbon up to Ramah-Mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim up to the territory to Debir; ²⁷ in the valley of Beth Haram, Beth Nimrah, Succoth, Zaphon, and the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, the Jordan and its banks,* up to the lower end of the Kinnereth Sea* beyond the Jordan to the east. ²⁸ This is the inheritance of the _⌊Gadites_⌋* according to their families, the cities, and their villages. ²⁹ Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was for the half-tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements* of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, ³¹ and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, Edrei, and the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the children of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Makir according to their families. ³² These are the territories that Moses gave as an inheritance on the desert-plateau of Moab, beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho.

³ For Moses had given an inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond the Jordan, but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.

¹ Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, ² and he said to them, "You have observed all that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, and you have listened* to my voice in all that I have commanded you; ³ you have not forsaken your kinsmen* these many days, up to this day, and you have observed the obligation of the command of Yahweh your God. ⁴ So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,* just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh's servant gave to you beyond the Jordan. ⁵ Only be very careful to observe the commandment and law that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul."* ⁶ And Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. ⁷ And to the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession with their kinsmen* beyond the Jordan to the west; and when Joshua sent them to their tents and blessed them, ⁸ he said to them, "Return to your tents with much wealth, and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, copper, iron, and with very much clothing; divide the war-booty of your enemies with your kinsmen."* ⁹ So the descendants* of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home and departed with the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead to the land of their possession, which they had acquired _⌊according to the command of Yahweh_⌋* through the hand of Moses. ¹⁰ And they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, and the descendants* of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar on the Jordan, _⌊a large and imposing altar_⌋.*

¹ The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but when he defiled the couch of his father, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that he was not enrolled in the genealogy as the firstborn, ² though Judah became strong among his brothers and a chief came from him, but the birthright belonged to Joseph). ³ The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. ⁴ The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, ⁵ Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, ⁶ Beerah his son, a leader of the Reubenites, whom Tiglath-Pilneser king of Assyria deported into exile. ⁷ And his kinsmen by their families, when their generations were recorded in the genealogy: the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, ⁸ and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel, who lived in Aroer, as far as Nebo and Baal-Meon. ⁹ He also lived to the east up to the entrance of the desert _⌊this side of_⌋* the River Euphrates, for their livestock had multiplied in the land of Gilead. ¹⁰ And in the days of Saul they made war against the Hagrites, and they* fell into their hand. And they lived in their tents in all the region east of Gilead.

⁸ Judah, as for you, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies. The sons of your father shall bow down to you. ⁹ Judah is a lion's cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bowed down; he crouched like a lion and as a lioness. Who shall rouse him? ¹⁰ The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff between his feet, until Shiloh comes. And to him shall be the obedience of nations.

⁶¹ Let your heart be completely with Yahweh our God by walking in his statutes, by keeping his commands as this day."

⁴ It happened at the time of Solomon's old age that his wives guided his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully with Yahweh his God as the heart of David his father had been.

³ "O Yahweh, please remember how I went about before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and remember the good that I have done in your eyes." Then Hezekiah _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.*

¹⁷ And David went out _⌊to meet them_⌋* and answered and said to them, "If you come in peace to me, to help me, _⌊my heart will be joined with you_⌋,* but if you come to betray me to my adversaries, although there is no wrong on my hands, may the God of our fathers see and pass judgment." ¹⁸ Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, chief of the thirty who said:
"We are yours, O David! And we are with you, O son of Jesse! Peace! Peace to you, and peace to those who help you, for your God helps you."
So David appointed them as heads of the troops.

¹² The hand of God was also upon Judah, to give them one heart to obey the command of the king and the princes concerning the word of Yahweh.

² I will give attention to the way of integrity. When will you come to me? I will walk in the integrity of my heart in the midst of my house.

³ Your people _⌊will volunteer_⌋* in the day of your power.* In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, you will have the dew of your youth.*

¹⁹ And I will give to them one heart, and a new spirit I will give* in their inner parts. And I will remove their* heart of stone from their body, and I will give to them a heart of flesh,

³⁰ So he made a meal for them, and they ate and drank.

⁵⁴ And Jacob sacrificed a sacrifice on the hill, and he called his kinsmen to eat the meal.* And they ate the meal* and spent the night on the hill.

¹⁹ Then he distributed to all the people, to all the multitude of Israel, from man to woman, to each: one ring-shaped piece of bread, one cake of dates, and one cake of raisins; and all the people went each to his house.

⁴² Then all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because the king is my close relative! Why are you this angry over this matter? _⌊Have we by any means eaten anything from the king? Did we take by any means anything that was not ours_⌋?"*

¹⁸ Then Abigail _⌊quickly took_⌋* two hundred loaves of bread, two skins of wine, five prepared sheep, five seahs of roasted grain, a hundred raisin cakes, and two hundred fig cakes, and she put them on the donkeys.

¹ Now David passed a little from beyond the summit, and suddenly Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him with a pair of saddled donkeys; on them were two hundred loaves of bread and a hundred raisin cakes, with a hundred summer fruits and a skin of wine.

²⁷ Just as David had arrived in Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash from Rabbah of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and Makir the son of Ammiel from Lo Debar and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim ²⁸ brought beds and basins and objects of pottery, as well as wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils, ²⁹ honey, curds, sheep, cheese, and cattle for David and for the people who were with him to eat. For they had thought, "The troops are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness."

⁴⁰ All the people went up after him, and the people were playing on the flutes and rejoicing with great joy, and the earth shook with their noise.

²⁰ All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city rested; for Athaliah had been killed with the sword in the palace of the king.

¹⁰ When good is with the righteous, the city rejoices, and with the perishing of the wicked, jubilation.

² When the righteous are numerous, the people will rejoice, but when the wicked are ruling, people will groan.

⁵ "Look, days are coming," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "when I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and he will reign as king, and he will achieve success, and he will do justice and righteousness in the land. ⁶ In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell _⌊in safety_⌋,* and this is his name by which he will be called: 'Yahweh is our righteousness.'

³⁷ Now as* he was drawing near by this time to the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a loud voice for all the miracles that they had seen, ³⁸ saying,
"Blessed is the king, the one who comes in the name of the Lord!* Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

⁵ And a voice came out from the throne, saying,
"Praise our God all his slaves, and those who fear him, the small and the great!" ⁶ And I heard something like the sound of a great crowd and something like the sound of many waters and something like the sound of powerful thunder, saying,
"Hallelujah! For the Lord God,* the All-Powerful, reigns! ⁷ Let us rejoice and be glad and give him the glory, because the wedding celebration of the Lamb has come, and his bride has prepared herself.
