¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and every Israelite fled away from before the Philistines. And they fell slain upon Mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines _⌊overtook_⌋* Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle was heavy against Saul, and the _⌊archers_⌋* found him, and he was wounded by the _⌊archers_⌋.* ⁴ And Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and deal harshly with me." But he was very afraid. Then Saul took the sword and fell upon it. ⁵ When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon the sword, and he died. ⁶ So Saul died. And his three sons and all his house died together. ⁷ And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they* had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and dwelled in them. ⁸ And it happened that on the next day when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. ⁹ And they stripped him and took his head and his weapons, and they sent them throughout the land of the Philistines to bring news to their idols and the nation. ¹⁰ And they put his weapons in the temple of their gods, and they fastened his skull to the temple of Dagon. ¹¹ When all Jabesh-Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, ¹² every strong man arose and took the dead body of Saul and the dead bodies of his sons and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days. ¹³ So Saul died on account of his sin which he had sinned against Yahweh concerning the command of Yahweh that he did not keep. He also consulted a medium to seek guidance. ¹⁴ But he did not seek Yahweh. So Yahweh put him to death and turned over the kingship to David, the son of Jesse.

¹ _⌊Now_⌋* in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for war to fight against Israel. So Achish said to David, "Certainly you realize that you must go out with me in the army, you and your men."

⁴ Then the Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem, so Saul assembled all Israel, and they encamped at Gilboa.

¹ Now the Philistines assembled all their forces at Aphek, and Israel was encamped at the spring that is in Jezreel. ² The rulers of the Philistines were passing on according to hundreds and thousands, David and his men passing on at the rear with Achish.

¹ Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul. ³ _⌊Saul was in the thick of the battle_⌋,* and _⌊the archers_⌋* spotted* him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, so that these uncircumcised do not come and thrust me through and make a fool of me!" But _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* was not willing to do so because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. ⁵ And when _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* and all his men together that same day. ⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the towns and fled. Thus the Philistines came and lived in them. ⁸ _⌊And then_⌋* the next day, the Philistines came to strip the dead and they found Saul and his three sons lying dead on Mount Gilboa. ⁹ So they cut off his head and stripped off his armor. Then they sent messengers around in the land of the Philistines to proclaim victory in the temples* of their idols and to the people. ¹⁰ And they put his armor in the temple* of the Ashtoreth,* and they fastened his corpse to the wall of Beth Shan. ¹¹ When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard about it, what the Philistines had done to Saul, ¹² all of _⌊the valiant men_⌋* set out and went all night and took the corpse of Saul and the corpses of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there. ¹³ Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk in Jabesh, and they fasted for seven days.

⁶ The young man who was reporting to him said, "I merely happened to be on Mount Gilboa. Here Saul was leaning on his spear, and look, the chariots and the horsemen were getting close to him.

²¹ O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you or on the fields of grain for offerings, for there the small shield of the mighty was defiled, the small shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

¹² So David left and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the rulers of Jabesh Gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth Shan, where the Philistines hung them _⌊when_⌋* the Philistines killed Saul on Gilboa.

⁸ And it happened that on the next day when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

⁵ You will not bow down to them, and you will not serve them, because I am Yahweh your God, a jealous God, punishing the guilt of the parents on the children on the third and on the fourth generations* of those hating me,

⁶ So Jonathan said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Come, let us go over to the garrisons of these uncircumcised; perhaps Yahweh will act for us, for there is no hindrance for Yahweh to save by many or by few."

³⁹ For as Yahweh lives, who delivers Israel, I swear that even if it is in Jonathan my son, _⌊he will certainly die_⌋!"* But nobody from all the army answered him. ⁴⁰ Then he said to all Israel, "You will be _⌊on one side_⌋,* and I and my son Jonathan will be _⌊on the other_⌋."* And the army said to Saul, "Do what is good in your eyes."

⁴⁹ Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, Ishvi, and Malki-Shua; the names of his two daughters were as follows: the name of the firstborn was Merab and the younger was Michal.

²⁹ In his days, Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, went up against the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. King Josiah went to meet him, and he* killed him at Megiddo as soon as he saw him.

⁷ They slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes; then they blinded the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon.

³³ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

³⁹ And Ner fathered Kish, and Kish fathered Saul, and Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-Shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

¹ The righteous one perishes, and there is no one who takes* it to heart. And men of faithfulness are gathered, while there is no one who understands, for the righteous is gathered from the presence of wickedness. ² he enters into peace; they will rest on their beds, walking straight ahead of him.

²³ _⌊The archers_⌋* fiercely attacked him. They shot arrows at him and were hostile to him. ²⁴ But his bow remained in a steady position; _⌊his arms_⌋* were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob. From there is the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel.

³ _⌊Saul was in the thick of the battle_⌋,* and _⌊the archers_⌋* spotted* him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. ⁴ Then Saul said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, so that these uncircumcised do not come and thrust me through and make a fool of me!" But _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* was not willing to do so because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. ⁵ And when _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* and all his men together that same day.

⁴ Then David said to him, "_⌊How did things go_⌋?* Please tell me." He answered, "_⌊When_⌋* the army fled from the battle, and many of the people fell; also, Saul and Jonathan his son died." ⁵ Then David asked the young man who was reporting to him, "How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan died?" ⁶ The young man who was reporting to him said, "I merely happened to be on Mount Gilboa. Here Saul was leaning on his spear, and look, the chariots and the horsemen were getting close to him. ⁷ When he turned around and saw me, he called to me, and I said, 'Here I am.' ⁸ Then he said to me, 'Who are you?' And I said to him, 'I am an Amalekite.' ⁹ He said to me, 'Please stand over me and kill me, for convulsions have seized me, even though my life is still in me.' ¹⁰ So I stood over him and killed him, for I knew that he could not live after his falling; I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet which was on his arm; and here, I have brought them to my lord.

¹⁴ Flight will perish from the swift and the strong person will not muster his strength and the warrior will not save his life.

⁵⁴ He called quickly to the young man carrying his weapons, and he said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, so that they will not say of me, 'A woman killed him.'" So the young man* stabbed him, and he died.

¹⁸ And he was very thirsty, and he called to Yahweh and said, "You gave this great victory into the hand of your servant, but now I must die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?"

²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder _⌊in the prison_⌋.*

²³ The rulers of the Philistines had gathered to sacrifice a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to rejoice. And they said, "Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand." ²⁴ And the people saw him, and they praised their god, for they said, "Our god has given into our hand those who hate us, devastate our land, and have _⌊killed many of us_⌋."* ²⁵ After awhile, when their hearts* were merry, they said, "Call Samson and let him entertain us." And they called Samson _⌊from the prison_⌋,* and _⌊he entertained them_⌋.* And they made him stand between the pillars.

²⁶ Now David had spoken to the men who were standing with him, saying, "What will be done for the man who defeats this Philistine and removes the disgrace from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he defies the battle lines of the living God?"

³⁶ Your servant has struck down both the lion and the bear, and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he defied the battle lines of the living God."

⁴ Then Saul said to _⌊his armor bearer_⌋,* "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, so that these uncircumcised do not come and thrust me through and make a fool of me!" But _⌊his armor bearer_⌋* was not willing to do so because he was very afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it.

¹⁴ David said to him, "How is it that you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed one?" ¹⁵ Then David called to one of the young men and said to him, "Come near; strike him." So he struck him down and he died. ¹⁶ David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you by saying, 'I killed Yahweh's anointed one!'"

²⁰ Do not tell it in Gath; do not proclaim it in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.

²³ When Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled the donkey, and he set out and went up to his house in his city. _⌊After he set his house in order_⌋,* he hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his ancestors.*

¹⁸ It happened that when Zimri saw that the city was taken, he went to the citadel fortress of the house of the king, and he burnt the house of the king over him with fire so that he died.

⁵ When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon the sword, and he died.

⁴ saying, "I have sinned by* betraying innocent blood!" But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!"* ⁵ And throwing the silver coins into the temple he departed. And he went away and* hanged himself.

¹⁸ (Now this man acquired a field for the wages of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines spilled out.

²⁷ And after* the jailer was awake and saw the doors of the prison open, he drew his* sword and* was about to kill himself, because he* thought the prisoners had escaped.

¹⁰ So the Philistines fought and Israel was defeated and each man fled to his tent, for the slaughter was very great. Thirty thousand foot soldiers from Israel fell. ¹¹ Furthermore, the ark of God was captured,* and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.

¹⁸ Just as he mentioned the ark of God, he* fell from his chair backwards against the side of the gate. He broke his neck and died, because the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.

²⁵ But if you continue to do wickedness, both you and your king will be swept away."

¹ So all this I laid to my heart, and I concluded* that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in the hand of God. So no one knows anything that will come to them, whether it will be love or hatred. ² The same fate comes to everyone:
to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked,* to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths.

¹⁰ Where now is your king that he may save you? Where in all your cities are your judges, of whom you said, "Give to me a king and rulers?" ¹¹ I gave you a king in my anger, and I took him in my wrath.

³¹ And I will lay your cities in ruins, and I will lay waste your sanctuaries; and I shall not smell your sacrifices'* appeasing fragrance.

³⁶ As for* the ones who remain among you, I will bring* fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight _⌊before_⌋* a sword, and they shall fall, but* there shall not be a pursuer.

³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.*

⁴³ The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower.

² The hand of the Midianites* prevailed over Israel; because of the presence of the Midianites,* the _⌊Israelites_⌋* made for themselves hiding places that were in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that it was _⌊too difficult_⌋* for them, because the army was hard pressed, the people hid themselves in the caves, in the thorn bushes, in the cliffs, in the vaults* and in the wells.

⁷ And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley and those who were beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the towns and fled. Thus the Philistines came and lived in them. ⁸ _⌊And then_⌋* the next day, the Philistines came to strip the dead and they found Saul and his three sons lying dead on Mount Gilboa.

²³ Then they said, "This is blood! Certainly the kings have fought one another, and each has killed his neighbor. Now, to the war booty, O Moab!"

²⁵ When Jehoshaphat came with his people to plunder their booty, they found among them in abundance possessions, corpses, and precious items. And they took plunder for themselves _⌊until they could carry no more_⌋.* And they were three days in plundering the booty, for it was abundant.

²³ The rulers of the Philistines had gathered to sacrifice a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to rejoice. And they said, "Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand." ²⁴ And the people saw him, and they praised their god, for they said, "Our god has given into our hand those who hate us, devastate our land, and have _⌊killed many of us_⌋."*

² _⌊When he tasted the wine_⌋,* Belshazzar commanded that they bring the vessels of gold and silver that Nebuchadnezzar his _⌊predecessor_⌋* had taken from the temple that was in Jerusalem, so that the king and his lords,* his wives and his concubines may drink from them. ³ Then they brought in the vessels of gold that they took from the temple, the house of God that was in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords,* his wives and his concubines drank from them. ⁴ They drank the wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood and stone.*

²³ And now you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven, and the vessels of his temple you have brought in before you, and you and your lords,* your wives and your concubines, have been drinking wine from* them, and you have praised the gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone* that do not see and do not hear and do not know, but the God _⌊who holds your life in his hand_⌋* and all of your ways _⌊come from him_⌋,* you have not honored.

¹¹ and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it* to her mother.

² Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it to the temple of Dagon and placed it beside Dagon. ³ When the Ashdodites got up early the next morning, _⌊there was_⌋* Dagon fallen with his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh! So they took Dagon and returned him to his place. ⁴ When they got up early in the morning the next day, _⌊there was_⌋* Dagon fallen again with his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh! The head of Dagon and the palms of his two hands were cut off, lying at* the threshold; only the body* of Dagon was left. ⁵ (Therefore the priests of Dagon and all who come into the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod until this very day.) ⁶ Now the hand of Yahweh was heavy against the Ashdodites and he destroyed them and struck them with tumors,* both in Ashdod and its territories. ⁷ The men of Ashdod saw that it was so, and they said, "The ark of the God of Israel should not remain with us, because his hand is harsh on us and on Dagon our god!"

¹⁰ And they put his armor in the temple* of the Ashtoreth,* and they fastened his corpse to the wall of Beth Shan.

¹ Now Nahash the Ammonite went up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead. All the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, "_⌊Make a treaty with us_⌋* and we will serve you." ² But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, "On this condition _⌊I will make a treaty_⌋* with you, by gouging out the right eye of each of you, so that I can make it a disgrace for all Israel." ³ So the elders of Jabesh said to him, "Leave us alone for seven days so that we may send messengers in all the territory of Israel, and if there is no deliverer for us, then we will come out to you." ⁴ When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, _⌊they reported these things to_⌋* the people. Then all the people lifted up their voices and wept. ⁵ _⌊Just then_⌋,* Saul was coming from the field behind the cattle. Saul said, "What is the matter with the people, that they are weeping?" So they recounted to him the words of the men of Jabesh. ⁶ Then the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and _⌊he became very angry_⌋.* ⁷ So he took a yoke of oxen and cut them into pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, "Whoever is not going out after Saul and after Samuel, so will it be done to his oxen." Then the fear of Yahweh fell on the people and they went out as one man. ⁸ He mustered them at Bezek; the _⌊Israelites_⌋* were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah were thirty thousand. ⁹ They said to the messengers who had come, "Thus you will say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: 'Tomorrow deliverance for you will come _⌊when the sun is hot_⌋.'"* When the messengers went and told the men of Jabesh, they rejoiced. ¹⁰ The men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you and you may do to us _⌊whatever seems good to you_⌋."* ¹¹ _⌊And the_⌋* next day Saul placed the people in three divisions. Then they came into the middle of the camp _⌊at the early morning watch_⌋* and struck down _⌊the Ammonites_⌋* until the heat of the day. It happened that the remainder were scattered _⌊so that no two among them remained together_⌋.*

⁴ Then the men of Judah came, and they anointed David there as king over the house of Judah, and they told David, "The men of Jabesh-Gilead buried Saul." ⁵ So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-Gilead and said to them, "May you be blessed by Yahweh because you did this loyal love with your lord, with Saul, and you buried him. ⁶ Now may Yahweh show loyal love and faithfulness with you. I will also show the good with you that you have done in this matter. ⁷ So then, let your hands be strong and _⌊be valiant_⌋,* for your lord Saul is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me as king over them."

⁸ And Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died. And she was buried below Bethel, under the oak. And its name was called Allon-Bacuth.*

¹⁰ When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which was beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful wailing. And he made a mourning ceremony for his father seven days.

³⁵ Then all the people came to give David food. Still on that day, David swore, "_⌊May God punish me_⌋* if I taste food or anything before the sun goes down."

¹² So David left and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the rulers of Jabesh Gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth Shan, where the Philistines hung them _⌊when_⌋* the Philistines killed Saul on Gilboa. ¹³ He brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from there, and they gathered the bones of the executed. ¹⁴ And they buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the land of Benjamin at Zela, in the tomb of Kish his father. They did all that the king had commanded, and afterward God was entreated for the land.

¹⁸ " 'You will not let a witch live.

³¹ " 'You* shall not turn to the mediums and to the soothsayers; you* shall not seek them to become unclean with them; I am Yahweh your* God.

⁶ As for* the person who turns to the mediums and the soothsayers to prostitute after them, I will set* my face against that person, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you one who makes his son or his daughter go through the fire, or _⌊one who practices divination_⌋,* or an interpreter of signs,* or an augur,* or sorcerer, ¹¹ or one who casts magic spells, or one who consults a spirit of the dead,* or spiritist, or one who inquires of the dead.* ¹² For everyone doing these things is detestable to Yahweh, and because of these detestable things Yahweh your God is driving them out from _⌊before you_⌋.* ¹³ You must be blameless before Yahweh your God. ¹⁴ For these nations that you are about to dispossess listen to interpreters of signs* and to diviners, but Yahweh your God has not allowed you to do the same.

¹³ Then Samuel said to Saul, "You have behaved foolishly! You have not kept the command of Yahweh your God which he commanded you. For then, Yahweh would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. ¹⁴ But now, your kingdom will not endure. Yahweh has sought for himself a man according to his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him as leader over his people, because you have not kept what Yahweh commanded you."

² Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'I have observed what Amalek did to Israel, _⌊how he opposed him_⌋* when he went up from Egypt.

²³ For rebellion is like the sin of divination; arrogance is like iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of Yahweh, he has rejected you from being king!"

⁷ So Saul said to his servants, "Search for me _⌊a woman who is a medium_⌋* so that I may go to her and inquire of her." His servants said to him, "Look there is a woman who is a medium in Endor." ⁸ So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went _⌊with two of his men_⌋.* And they came to the woman by night and he said, "Please consult a spirit for me through _⌊the ritual pit_⌋,* and bring up for me the one whom I tell you." ⁹ But the woman said to him, "Look, you know what Saul did, how he exterminated the mediums* and the soothsayers from the land! Why are you setting a trap for my life to kill me?" ¹⁰ Then Saul swore to her by Yahweh, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* _⌊you will not be punished_⌋* for this thing." ¹¹ So the woman asked, "Whom shall I bring up for you?" He said, "Bring up Samuel for me." ¹² When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice, and the woman said to Saul, "Why did you deceive me? You are Saul!" ¹³ The king said to her, "Do not be afraid! What do you see?" And the woman said to Saul, "I see a god* coming up from the ground!" ¹⁴ Then he said to her, "What is his appearance?" She said, "An old man is coming up, and _⌊he is wrapped in a robe_⌋."* Then Saul realized that it was Samuel, and he knelt with his face to the ground and bowed down. ¹⁵ Then Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?" And Saul said, "_⌊I am in distress_⌋!* For the Philistines are about to make war against me, but God has turned away from me, and he does not answer me any more, not _⌊by the prophets_⌋* or by the dreams. So I called to you to let me know what I should do." ¹⁶ Then Samuel said, "Why do you ask me, since Yahweh has turned away from you and has become your enemy? ¹⁷ Yahweh has done to you just as he spoke by my hand! Yahweh has torn the kingdom from your hand and has given it to your neighbor, to David. ¹⁸ Because you _⌊did not obey_⌋* Yahweh and did not carry out the fierce anger of his _⌊wrath_⌋* against Amalek, therefore Yahweh has done this thing to you today. ¹⁹ And Yahweh will also give Israel with you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me, and Yahweh will also give the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines." ²⁰ _⌊Then Saul immediately fell prostrate_⌋* to the ground, and he was very afraid because of the words of Samuel; there was no more strength in him, for he had not eaten food all day and all night.

⁶ He made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying and divination, and dealt with mediums and spiritists. He increased the doing of evil in the eyes of Yahweh to provoke him.

¹⁹ Now if they tell you, "Consult the ghosts and the spirits, those who chirp and those who mutter. Should not a people consult its gods, the dead on behalf of the living,

⁹ Now a certain man _⌊named_⌋* Simon had been in the city practicing magic and astonishing the people of Samaria, saying he was someone great. ¹⁰ They were all paying attention to _⌊him_⌋,* from the least to the greatest, saying, "This man is the power of God that is called 'Great.'" ¹¹ And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astonished them with his* magic.

¹⁶ And it happened that as* we were going to the place of prayer, a certain female slave who had a spirit of divination* met us, who was bringing a large profit to her owners by* fortune-telling. ¹⁷ She followed Paul and us and* was crying out, saying, "These men are slaves of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation!" ¹⁸ And she was doing this for many days. But Paul, becoming greatly annoyed and turning around, said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out _⌊immediately_⌋.*

¹¹ And Yahweh said to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians,* the Amorites,* from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* and from the Philistines?* ¹² And when the Sidonians, the Amalekites,* and the Maonites* oppressed you, you cried out to me, and I delivered you from their hand. ¹³ Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. Therefore I will no longer deliver you. ¹⁴ Go and cry out to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your trouble." ¹⁵ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to Yahweh, "We have sinned; _⌊do to us accordingly as you see fit_⌋;* only please deliver us this day." ¹⁶ So they removed the foreign gods from their midst and served Yahweh; and _⌊he could no longer bear_⌋* the misery of Israel.

¹⁴ But now, your kingdom will not endure. Yahweh has sought for himself a man according to his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him as leader over his people, because you have not kept what Yahweh commanded you."

²⁸ Then Samuel said to him, "Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to your neighbor _⌊who is better than you_⌋.*

¹ Then Yahweh said to Samuel, "_⌊How long_⌋* will you mourn about Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel! Fill up your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have chosen a king for myself among his sons."

¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jesse, "_⌊Are all the young men here_⌋?"* And he said, "The youngest still remains, but look, he is shepherding the flock." And Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and bring him, for we cannot _⌊sit down_⌋* until he comes here." ¹² So he sent and brought him. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and of _⌊handsome_⌋* appearance. And Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him, for this is he." ¹³ So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. Then the Spirit of Yahweh rushed upon David from that day _⌊on_⌋.* Then Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

⁶ And Saul inquired of Yahweh, but Yahweh did not answer him, not by dreams or by the Urim* or by the prophets.

¹⁷ Yahweh has done to you just as he spoke by my hand! Yahweh has torn the kingdom from your hand and has given it to your neighbor, to David.

⁹ Thus _⌊may God punish Abner_⌋,* _⌊if I do not accomplish what Yahweh has sworn to David_⌋;* ¹⁰ specifically, to transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and to establish the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan to Beersheba!"

³ All the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David _⌊made a covenant_⌋* with them at Hebron in the presence of Yahweh; then they anointed David as king over Israel.

²³ And these are the numbers of the chiefs of those prepared for the army who came to David at Hebron to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him according to the word of Yahweh.

¹³ For he who returns evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.

⁷ But he does not think this,* and his heart does not plan this. For it is in his heart to destroy and to cut off not a few nations.

¹⁵ Does the ax boast against the one who cuts with it, or the saw magnify itself against the one who moves it to and fro? _⌊As if a rod should move the one who lifts it_⌋!* _⌊As if a staff should lift up that which is not wood_⌋!*

³ "Son of man,* these men took up their idols into their heart and _⌊they placed before themselves_⌋* a stumbling block of their guilt.* _⌊Should I really let myself be consulted by them_⌋?* ⁴ Therefore speak with them, and you must say to them, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Every person from the house of Israel who brings up his idols into his heart and _⌊places before himself_⌋* a stumbling block of his guilt* and yet he comes to the prophet, I Yahweh, I will respond to him through this act* with respect to the multitude* of his idols, ⁵ so that I may take hold of the house of Israel by their heart, those who are estranged from me, all of them, through their idols.' ⁶ Therefore say to the house of Israel, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Return,* and turn away from your idols and from all of your detestable things! Turn away your faces!" '
