³ And the people contended with Moses, and spoke, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

² And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: ³ And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for you have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

² Therefore the people did strive with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why do you strive with me? why do you test the LORD?

¹ And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burned among them, and consumed some that were in the outlying parts of the camp.

³³ And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very great plague. ³⁴ And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that craved.

¹ And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. ² And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!

³⁶ And the men, whom Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land, ³⁷ Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.

³¹ And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split asunder that was under them: ³² And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that belonged unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ They, and all that belonged to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. ³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. ³⁵ And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

⁴⁹ Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died in the incident of Korah.

¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not expire when I came out of the womb?

⁹ They that are slain with the sword are better than they that are slain with hunger: for these pine away, stricken through for lack of the fruits of the field.
