⁶ And love the uppermost places at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

⁶ Put not forth yourself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: ⁷ For better it is that it be said unto you, Come up here; than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince whom your eyes have seen.

²¹ And he said unto her, What will you? She said unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on your right hand, and the other on the left, in your kingdom.

³⁸ And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, who love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces, ³⁹ And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost places at feasts:

⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees! for you love the best seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are as graves which are not seen, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. ⁴⁵ Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Teacher, thus saying you reproach us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you load men with burdens hard to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Truly you bear witness that you consent to the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: ⁵⁰ That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; ⁵¹ From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe unto you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in you hindered. ⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: ⁵⁴ Lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him.

⁷ And he put forth a parable to those who were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief places; saying unto them, ⁸ When you are bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest place; lest a more honorable man than you be bidden of him; ⁹ And he that bade you and him come and say to you, Give this man your place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when you are bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that bade you come, he may say unto you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have honor in the presence of them that sit at table with you. ¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief places at feasts; ⁴⁷ Who devour widows' houses, and for a show make long prayers: the same shall receive greater condemnation.

¹⁰ Be tender loving one to another with brotherly love; in honor preferring one another;

¹ My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. ² For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in fine apparel, and there come in also a poor man in shabby clothing; ³ And you have respect to him that wears the fine clothing, and say unto him, Sit here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand there, or sit here under my footstool: ⁴ Are you not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

⁹ I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, receives us not.
