¹ Furthermore Elihu answered and said, ² Hear my words, O you wise men; and give ear unto me, you that have knowledge. ³ For the ear tests words, as the mouth tastes food. ⁴ Let us choose for us justice: let us know among ourselves what is good. ⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my right? my wound is incurable though I am without transgression. ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up scorn like water? ⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. ¹⁰ Therefore hearken unto me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. ¹¹ For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. ¹² Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice. ¹³ Who has given him charge over the earth? or who has laid on him the whole world? ¹⁴ If he should set his heart upon man, if he should gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; ¹⁵ All flesh would perish together, and man would turn again unto dust. ¹⁶ If now you have understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words. ¹⁷ Shall even he that hates right govern? and will you condemn him that is most just? ¹⁸ Is it fit to say to a king, You are wicked? and to princes, You are ungodly? ¹⁹ How much less to him that regards not the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. ²⁰ In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without a hand. ²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps. ²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. ²³ For he will not lay upon man more than what is right; that he should enter into judgment with God. ²⁴ He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their place. ²⁵ Therefore he knows their works, and he overturns them in the night, so that they are destroyed. ²⁶ He strikes them as wicked men in the open sight of others; ²⁷ Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways: ²⁸ So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he hears the cry of the afflicted. ²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hides his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: ³⁰ That the hypocrite reigns not, lest the people be ensnared. ³¹ Surely it is fitting to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: ³² That which I see not you teach me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. ³³ Should it be according to your mind? he will recompense it, whether you refuse, or whether you choose; and not I: therefore declare what you know. ³⁴ Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me. ³⁵ Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom. ³⁶ My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because he answers like wicked men. ³⁷ For he adds rebellion unto his sin, he claps his hands among us, and multiplies his words against God.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men; judge what I say.

²⁰ Brethren, be not children in understanding: but in malice be children, but in understanding be men.

³⁰ Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?

¹¹ Does not the ear test words? and the mouth taste its food?

³⁰ Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

² Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue has spoken in my mouth.

¹⁵ But he that is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

¹⁴ But solid food belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

³⁰ And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider it, take counsel, and speak your minds.

⁷ Behold, you are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.

³⁶ My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because he answers like wicked men.

² And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; ³ And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: ⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. ⁵ And righteousness shall be the belt of his loins, and faithfulness the belt of his waist.

²⁴ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

² And be not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

² Do you not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? ³ Know you not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life? ⁴ If then you have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church. ⁵ I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?

¹¹ But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed. ¹² For before certain men came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them who were of the circumcision. ¹³ And the other Jews joined likewise with him; so that Barnabas also was carried away with their hypocrisy. ¹⁴ But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If you, being a Jew, live after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compel you the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

²¹ Test all things; hold fast that which is good.

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

⁴ For you have said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in your eyes.

¹⁷ Not for any violence in my hands: also my prayer is pure.

² As God lives, who has taken away my right; and the Almighty, who has made bitter my soul;

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹³ His archers surround me, he slashes my kidneys asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground.

⁴ My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. ⁵ God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove my integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

¹⁹ And it comes to pass, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:

¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, who drinks iniquity like water?

²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

¹⁰ But he said unto her, You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

⁵ For your mouth utters your iniquity, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

¹⁵ Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?

¹ Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites.

¹⁸ When you saw a thief, then you consented with him, and have been partaker with adulterers.

¹² Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches. ¹³ Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence. ¹⁴ For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning. ¹⁵ If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I would have been untrue to the generation of your children.

¹⁵ My son, walk not in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path:

¹² To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks perverse things;

¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

³³ Be not deceived: evil companions corrupt good morals.

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the blameless and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge slays suddenly, he will laugh at the plight of the innocent.

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands ever so clean; ³¹ Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me.

¹⁴ Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of your ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? ¹⁶ Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

³⁰ That the wicked are reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do to us?

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?

³ For you said, What advantage will it be unto you? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?

⁴ Delight yourself also in the LORD; and he shall give you the desires of your heart.

¹⁴ You have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked in mourning before the LORD of hosts?

²⁵ That be far from you to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from you: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

⁴ He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are justice: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

⁷ Therefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.

³ Does God pervert judgment? or does the Almighty pervert justice?

³⁴ Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me.

²³ Who has prescribed him his way? or who can say, You have worked iniquity?

²³ As for the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in abundant justice: he will not afflict.

¹⁵ To show that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul.

³² He that refuses instruction despises his own soul: but he that hears reproof gets understanding.

¹ Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

⁴ God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That you might be justified in your sayings, and might overcome when you are judged. ⁵ But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who takes vengeance? (I speak as a man)

¹⁴ What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

¹³ Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempts he any man:

²⁶ He shall pray unto God, and he will be favorable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

¹² Also unto you, O Lord, belongs mercy: for you render to every man according to his work.

³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

¹² If you say, Behold, we knew it not; does not he that weighs the heart consider it? and he that keeps your soul, does not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

¹⁹ Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for your eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

¹⁷ Yet the children of your people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. ¹⁸ When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die for it. ¹⁹ But if the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall live by it. ²⁰ Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O you house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may be recompensed for the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

¹⁷ And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man's work, pass the time of your exile here in fear:

¹² And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

⁷ For the righteous LORD loves righteousness; his countenance does behold the upright.

¹⁷ The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

¹² Are you not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, you have ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, you have established them for correction. ¹³ You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and can not look on iniquity: why do you look upon them that deal treacherously, and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man that is more righteous than he?

¹¹ Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.

⁴ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding. ⁵ Who has determined the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line upon it? ⁶ On what are its foundations fastened? or who laid its cornerstone; ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, ¹⁰ And prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Thus far shall you come, but no farther: and here shall your proud waves be stopped? ¹² Have you commanded the morning since your days began; and caused the dawn to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is turned as clay under the seal; and they stand out as a garment. ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the uplifted arm shall be broken. ¹⁶ Have you entered into the springs of the sea? or have you walked in search of the depths? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto you? or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Have you perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if you know it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is its place, ²⁰ That you should take it to its domain, and that you should know the paths to its home? ²¹ Do you know it, because you were born then? or because the number of your days is great? ²² Have you entered into the treasury of the snow? or have you seen the treasury of the hail, ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light distributed, which scatters the east wind upon the earth? ²⁵ Who has divided a channel for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Has the rain a father? or who has begotten the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? and the frost from heaven, who has given it birth? ³⁰ The waters harden like a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. ³¹ Can you bind the cluster of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Can you bring forth Mazzaroth in its season? or can you guide Arcturus with its children? ³³ Know you the ordinances of heaven? can you set their dominion in the earth? ³⁴ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto you, Here we are? ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? or who has given understanding to the heart? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? or who can pour out the water skins of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust grows into clumps, and the clods cleave fast together? ³⁹ Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ When they crouch in their dens, and abide in their lairs to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven its food? when its young ones cry unto God, they wander about for lack of food.

⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous? ⁹ Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck yourself now with majesty and splendor; and array yourself with glory and beauty. ¹¹ Put forth the rage of your wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him.

²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth was. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: ²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the first of the dust of the world. ²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he drew a circle upon the face of the depth: ²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: ²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his command: when he appointed the foundations of the earth: ³⁰ Then I was by him, like a master workman: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;

¹³ Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counselor has taught him? ¹⁴ With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed to him the way of understanding?

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can restrain his hand, or say unto him, What do you?

³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor? ³⁵ Or who has first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? ³⁶ For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.

¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him? and that you should set your heart upon him?

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?

²⁹ You hide your face, they are troubled: you take away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

²² And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be punished.

¹⁹ In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return unto the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and unto dust shall you return.

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the blameless and the wicked.

⁹ Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again?

²³ For I know that you will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.

³ You turn man to destruction; and say, Return, you children of men. ⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. ⁵ You carry them away as with a flood; they are like a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. ⁶ In the morning it flourishes, and grows up; in the evening it is cut down, and withers. ⁷ For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. ¹⁰ The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

⁴ Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together.

¹⁶ For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always angry: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knows not such things as these?

² What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you. ³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. ⁴ But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

²¹ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed?

³ The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, He that rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.

²² In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God with wrong.

⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

⁵ But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who takes vengeance? (I speak as a man) ⁶ God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world? ⁷ For if the truth of God has more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

²⁸ You shall not revile God, nor curse the ruler of your people.

²⁶ Also, to punish the just is not good, nor to flog princes for their integrity.

³ Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite you, you whitewashed wall: for do you sit to judge me after the law, and command me to be smitten contrary to the law?

⁵ Then said Paul, I knew not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, You shall not speak evil of the ruler of your people.

⁷ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

¹⁷ Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

¹⁰ But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise authority. Presumptuous are they, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of the glorious ones.

⁸ Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise authority, and speak evil of the glorious ones.

¹⁵ You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: you shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

¹⁷ For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, mighty, and awesome, who regards not persons, nor takes reward:

³ Is it good unto you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile upon the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁹ He leads princes away plundered, and overthrows the mighty.

²¹ He pours contempt upon princes, and weakens the strength of the mighty.

⁸ Will you accept his person? will you contend for God?

¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

¹⁹ Will he esteem your riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.

² The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, ³ Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. ⁴ He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

⁶ They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

³¹ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker: but he that honors him has mercy on the poor.

² The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter: for the high official is watched by a higher one; and there are yet higher ones over them.

¹⁴ The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders of his people, and its princes: For you have eaten up the vineyard; the plunder of the poor is in your houses.

³⁴ Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

¹¹ For there is no respect of persons with God.

⁶ But of these who seemed to be somebody, (whatsoever they were, it makes no matter to me: God accepts no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somebody in conference added nothing to me:

⁹ And, you masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

²⁵ But he that does wrong shall receive for the wrong which he has done: and there is no respect of persons.

²⁸ Therefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to them that love him?

²⁹ And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle. ³⁰ And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days later, that the LORD struck Nabal, that he died. ³⁹ And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept his servant from evil: for the LORD has returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and talked with Abigail, to take her to be his wife.

¹⁰ David said furthermore, As the LORD lives, the LORD shall strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

²⁰ Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.

¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹⁶ Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire. ¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; ¹⁸ And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a sick man wastes away. ¹⁹ And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them down.

¹³ Therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, a bulge in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant.

³⁰ And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall show the descending of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones. ³¹ For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, as he strikes with the rod. ³² And in every place where the staff of punishment shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with timbrels and harps: and in battles of brandishing will he fight with it. ³³ For Tophet was ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he has made it deep and large: its pyre is fire with much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, does kindle it.

³⁶ Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and struck in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead corpses.

³⁸ And it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

³⁴ You saw till a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces.

⁴⁴ And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. ⁴⁵ Just as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God has made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and its interpretation sure.

³⁰ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

⁶ Then he answered and spoke unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the LORD of hosts.

⁶ And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom comes; go out to meet him.

²⁰ But God said unto him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of you: then whose shall those things be, which you have prepared?

²⁶ And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. ²⁷ They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. ²⁸ Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; ²⁹ But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and died.

² For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

³ And through covetousness shall they with false words exploit you: whose judgment of old now lingers not, and their destruction slumbers not.

¹³ And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, You God, see me: for she said, Have I also here seen him that sees me?

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. In this you have done foolishly: therefore from now on you shall have wars.

⁴ Does not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

¹⁵ The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.

³ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

¹⁷ For my eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from my eyes.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

⁸ Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, says the LORD.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

¹⁷ For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death: if one recognizes them, they are in the terrors of the shadow of death.

³ Is not destruction to the wicked? and a disaster to the workers of iniquity?

⁵ The foolish shall not stand in your sight: you hate all workers of iniquity.

¹¹ If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. ¹² Yea, the darkness hides not from you; but the night shines as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to you.

²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

² The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined.

¹⁵ Woe unto them that go the depths to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who sees us? and who knows us?

²⁴ Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? says the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? says the LORD.

² Though they dig into sheol, there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, there will I bring them down: ³ And though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, I will search and take them from there; and though they are hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them:

²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

²⁷ But he shall say, I tell you, I know not where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

¹³ Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the generals, and the mighty men, and every slave, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; ¹⁶ And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

¹³ And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that you our God has punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and has given us such deliverance as this;

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in trial. ³³ Neither is there any mediator between us, that might lay his hand upon us both.

⁶ And that he would show you the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

¹¹ For he knows vain men: he sees wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

²¹ O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbor!

⁷ There the righteous might reason with him; so should I be delivered forever from my judge.

¹⁰ Therefore hearken unto me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. ¹¹ For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. ¹² Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert justice.

¹³⁷ [Tsadde] Righteous are you, O LORD, and upright are your judgments.

³ A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth justice unto truth.

⁵ Thus says the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

⁷ O Lord, righteousness belongs unto you, but unto us shame of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you. ⁸ O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;

²⁰ Nay but, O man, who are you that replies against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus?

³⁰ Therefore the LORD God of Israel says, I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD says, Be it far from me; for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. ³¹ Behold, the days come, that I will cut off your arm, and the arm of your father's house, that there shall not be an old man in your house. ³² And you shall see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. ³³ And any man of yours, whom I shall not cut off from my altar, shall consume your eyes, and grieve your heart: and all the increase of your house shall die in the flower of their age. ³⁴ And this shall be a sign unto you, that shall come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall both of them die. ³⁵ And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in my heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before my anointed forever. ³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in your house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray you, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.

²⁸ And Samuel said unto him, The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.

⁷ Go, tell Jeroboam, Thus says the LORD God of Israel, Since I exalted you from among the people, and made you ruler over my people Israel, ⁸ And tore the kingdom away from the house of David, and gave it you: and yet you have not been as my servant David, who kept my commandments, and who followed me with all his heart, to do that only which was right in my eyes;

¹⁴ Moreover the LORD shall raise up a king over Israel, who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day: what? even now.

² How long will you torment my soul, and break me in pieces with words?

⁹ You shall break them with a rod of iron; you shall dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

⁵ They break in pieces your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage.

⁷ He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts the needy out of the ash heap; ⁸ That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

²⁰ You are my battle-axe and weapons of war: for with you will I break in pieces the nations, and with you will I destroy kingdoms; ²¹ And with you will I break in pieces the horse and its rider; and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and its rider; ²² With you also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with you will I break in pieces old and young; and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the maiden; ²³ I will also break in pieces with you the shepherd and his flock; and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke of oxen; and with you will I break in pieces captains and rulers.

²¹ And he changes the times and the seasons: he removes kings, and sets up kings: he gives wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

³⁴ You saw till a stone was cut out without hands, which struck the image upon its feet that were of iron and clay, and broke them to pieces. ³⁵ Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away, so that no place was found for them: and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

²⁸ PERES; Your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. ²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. ³¹ And Darius the Mede took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.

²⁰ In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without a hand.

¹⁵ He fashions their hearts alike; he considers all their works.

⁸ They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man has his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.

¹ The burden concerning Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence;

¹⁸ For I know their works and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come, and see my glory.

² And they consider not in their hearts that I remember all their wickedness: now their own deeds have surrounded them; they are before my face.

⁷ The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

¹² And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

³⁰ Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

⁹ But you shall surely kill him; your hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. ¹⁰ And you shall stone him with stones, that he die; because he has sought to thrust you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. ¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, so that he dies: so shall you put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹¹ Thus says the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house, and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them unto your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. ¹² For you did it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God who judges in the earth.

²⁴ And they shall go forth, and look upon the corpses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorrence unto all flesh.

²⁰ Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

²⁴ Some men's sins are evident beforehand, going before them to judgment; and some men they follow after.

⁹ And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived in luxury with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is your judgment come.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, you heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets; for God has avenged you on her.

¹¹ It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

⁵ Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.

⁴³ Whoever is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

⁵ As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the LORD shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

²⁹ Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: ³⁰ They would have none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

³ The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib: but Israel does not know, my people do not consider.

¹² And the harp, and the lyre, the timbrel, and flute, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.

⁶ And those that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired for him.

¹⁵ And now, I pray you, consider from this day onward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD: ¹⁶ Since those days were, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the winepress to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty. ¹⁷ I struck you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labors of your hands; yet you turned not to me, says the LORD. ¹⁸ Consider now from this day and onward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider it. ¹⁹ Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, have not brought forth: but from this day will I bless you.

³¹ In that day, he who shall be upon the housetop, and his goods in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back. ³² Remember Lot's wife.

³⁸ But Paul thought it not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

¹⁰ For Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

³⁹ But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

²³ And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel groaned by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

⁷ And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

⁹ Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

²³ If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; ²⁴ And my wrath shall grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. ²⁵ If you lend money to any of my people who is poor among you, you shall not be to him as a lender, neither shall you charge him interest. ²⁶ If you at all take your neighbor's clothing as pledge, you shall deliver it unto him by the time the sun goes down: ²⁷ For that is his only covering, it is his clothing for his skin: in what shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you;

¹² Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded cries out: yet God charges not folly to them.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; ²⁰ If his heart has not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

⁹ Because of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out because of the arm of the mighty.

⁵ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, says the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that sneers at him.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for justice, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts.

¹ And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest all around from all his enemies;

⁹ And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. ¹⁰ And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. ¹¹ And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes: ¹² Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

¹⁴ Moreover all the leaders of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much according to all the abominations of the nations; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And the LORD God of their fathers sent word to them by his messengers, sending them time and again; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. ¹⁷ Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that was stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.

¹⁴ Behold, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again: he shuts up a man, and there can be no opening.

⁸ Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: ⁹ On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold him: he hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

¹³ But he is of one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desires, even that he does.

¹ Moreover Job continued his discourse, and said, ² Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; ³ When his lamp shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] How long will you forget me, O LORD? forever? how long will you hide your face from me?

⁹ Hide not your face far from me; put not your servant away in anger: you have been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.

⁷ LORD, by your favor you have made my mountain to stand strong: you did hide your face, and I was troubled.

⁷ Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit fails: hide not your face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

³ And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give you rest from your sorrow, and from your fear, and from the hard bondage in which you were made to serve. ⁴ That you shall take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How has the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! ⁵ The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, and the scepter of the rulers. ⁶ He who struck the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hinders. ⁷ The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing. ⁸ Yea, the cypress trees rejoice at you, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since you were laid low, no hewer has come up against us.

³ You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you: because he trusts in you.

¹⁷ And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.

⁸ And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation will I punish, says the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

²⁷ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

³¹ What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? ³² He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? ³³ Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifies. ³⁴ Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

⁷ And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

²⁸ Therefore the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. ²⁹ And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan. ³⁰ And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

⁹ But they hearkened not: and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps.

⁸ The wicked prowl on every side, when vile men are exalted.

² When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn. ³ Whosoever loves wisdom rejoices his father: but he that keeps company with harlots wastes his substance. ⁴ The king by justice establishes the land: but he that receives bribes overthrows it. ⁵ A man that flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. ⁶ In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous does sing and rejoice. ⁷ The righteous considers the cause of the poor: but the wicked regards not such knowledge. ⁸ Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath. ⁹ If a wise man contends with a foolish man, whether the foolish man rages or laughs, there is no rest. ¹⁰ The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his good. ¹¹ A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterwards. ¹² If a ruler hearkens to lies, all his servants are wicked.

¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroys much good.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after a human commandment.

¹¹ I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.

¹⁶ For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and you walk in their counsels; that I should make you a desolation, and your inhabitants a hissing: therefore you shall bear the reproach of my people.

⁴ Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. ⁵ Do you not remember, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? ⁶ And now you know what restrains that he might be revealed in his time. ⁷ For the mystery of iniquity does already work: only he who now restrains will do so, until he be taken out of the way. ⁸ And then shall that Wicked One be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the breath of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: ⁹ Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, ¹⁰ And with all deception of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And for this cause God shall send them a strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

³ And I saw one of his heads as if it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world marveled after the beast. ⁴ And they worshiped the dragon who gave power unto the beast: and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

¹¹ And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. ¹² And he exercises all the power of the first beast before him, and causes the earth and them who dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. ¹³ And he does great wonders, so that he makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, ¹⁴ And deceives them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, that had the wound by a sword, and did live.

⁴¹ And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept the punishment of their iniquity:

¹³ And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that you our God has punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and has given us such deliverance as this; ¹⁴ Should we again break your commandments, and join in marriage with the people of these abominations? would not you be angry with us till you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?

³³ Yet you are just in all that is brought upon us; for you have done right, but we have done wickedly: ³⁴ Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor hearkened unto your commandments and your testimonies, with which you did testify against them. ³⁵ For they have not served you in their kingdom, or in your great goodness that you gave them, or in the large and rich land which you gave before them, neither turned they from their wicked works. ³⁶ Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that you gave unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it: ³⁷ And it yields much increase unto the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress. ³⁸ And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our leaders, Levites, and priests, seal it.

²⁷ He looks upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;

³ Then Job answered the LORD, and said, ⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: restore me, and I shall return; for you are the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after I was turned, I repented; and after I was instructed, I struck myself upon the thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

⁷ O Lord, righteousness belongs unto you, but unto us shame of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you. ⁸ O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him; ¹⁰ Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. ¹¹ Yea, all Israel have transgressed your law, even by departing, that they might not obey your voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him. ¹² And he has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven has not been done as has been done upon Jerusalem. ¹³ As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand your truth. ¹⁴ Therefore has the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he does: for we obeyed not his voice.

⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause, and executes justice for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me.

¹¹ Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

¹² Who can understand his errors? cleanse me from secret faults.

⁴ Show me your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. ⁵ Lead me in your truth, and teach me: for you are the God of my salvation; on you do I wait all the day.

⁸ I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go: I will guide you with my eye.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: ²⁴ And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

⁸ Cause me to hear your lovingkindness in the morning; for in you do I trust: cause me to know the way in which I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto you. ⁹ Deliver me, O LORD, from my enemies: I flee unto you to hide me. ¹⁰ Teach me to do your will; for you are my God: your Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.

¹³ He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whosoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

⁸ Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ⁹ And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? ¹¹ He answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise. ¹² Then came also tax collectors to be baptized, and said unto him, Teacher, what shall we do? ¹³ And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. ¹⁴ And the soldiers likewise asked of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

²² That you put off concerning the former way of life the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

²⁵ Therefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another. ²⁶ Be angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: ²⁷ Neither give place to the devil. ²⁸ Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs.

¹² Behold, he takes away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What do you?

³¹ Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for futility shall be his reward.

⁴ He tears himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for you? and shall the rock be removed out of its place?

⁵ If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, stand up.

³² If you have any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify you.

¹¹ For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

¹¹ Who has given to me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.

³⁰ If his children forsake my law, and walk not in my judgments; ³¹ If they break my statutes, and keep not my commandments; ³² Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes.

⁶ Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that did he in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.

³¹ Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed on the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

⁹ Woe unto him that strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashions it, What do you make? or of your work, He has no hands?

¹² Saying, These last have worked but one hour, and you have made them equal unto us, who have borne the burden and heat of the day. ¹³ But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do you no wrong: did not you agree with me for a penny? ¹⁴ Take what is yours, and go your way: I will give unto this last, even as unto you. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good?

³⁵ Or who has first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?

⁶ Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; ⁷ And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

² For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;

²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he looked for the recompense of the reward.

² Hear my words, O you wise men; and give ear unto me, you that have knowledge.

⁴ Let us choose for us justice: let us know among ourselves what is good.

¹⁰ Therefore hearken unto me, you men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity.

¹⁶ If now you have understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.

² What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.

² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

¹⁶ Therefore does Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge.

² Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God brings abundantly.

⁷ Why do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?

¹⁶ For God makes my heart soft, and the Almighty troubles me:

¹ Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?

⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

³ You have proved my heart; you have visited me in the night; you have tested me, and shall find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

² Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my heart and my mind.

¹¹ Behold, we count them happy who endure. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very compassionate, and of tender mercy.

²³ For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king.

² How long will you speak these things? and how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind? ³ Does God pervert judgment? or does the Almighty pervert justice?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

² Even today is my complaint bitter: my hand is heavy in spite of my groaning.

²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

² Think you this to be right, that you said, My righteousness is more than God’s? ³ For you said, What advantage will it be unto you? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land: ²⁰ But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.
