¹ It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be over the whole kingdom; ² And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the satraps might give accounts unto them, and the king should suffer no loss. ³ Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. ⁴ Then the presidents and satraps sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault; because he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him. ⁵ Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God. ⁶ Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live forever. ⁷ All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the satraps, the counselors, and the advisors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, except from you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions. ⁸ Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which alters not. ⁹ Therefore king Darius signed the written decree. ¹⁰ Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before. ¹¹ Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God. ¹² Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king's decree; have you not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any god or man within thirty days, except of you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which alters not. ¹³ Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regards not you, O king, nor the decree that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day. ¹⁴ Then the king, when he heard these words, was greatly displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he labored till the going down of the sun to deliver him. ¹⁵ Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establishes may be changed. ¹⁶ Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spoke and said unto Daniel, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you. ¹⁷ And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel. ¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep went from him. ¹⁹ Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions. ²⁰ And when he came to the den, he cried with a grieved voice unto Daniel: and the king spoke and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions? ²¹ Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live forever. ²² My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: because before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no wrong. ²³ Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of harm was found upon him, because he believed in his God. ²⁴ And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions overpowered them, and broke all their bones in pieces before they ever came at the bottom of the den. ²⁵ Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. ²⁶ I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and steadfast forever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. ²⁷ He delivers and rescues, and he works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth, who has delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. ²⁸ So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

¹⁴ Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.

¹⁸ And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for slaves, and our donkeys.

⁹ And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

²¹ Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: ²² And let them judge the people at all times: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto you, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for yourself, and they shall bear the burden with you.

²³ And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand shortened? you shall see now whether my word shall come to pass unto you or not.

¹⁵ Now if you shall kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying, ¹⁶ Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to give unto them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.

¹⁶ And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and has brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your border:

²⁶ For who is there of all flesh, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

¹⁸ And the judges shall make diligent inquiry: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ Then shall you do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shall you put the evil away from among you. ²⁰ And those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall hereafter commit no more any such evil among you.

¹⁶ The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

⁴ But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.

³⁰ Therefore the LORD God of Israel says, I said indeed that your house, and the house of your father, should walk before me forever: but now the LORD says, Be it far from me; for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

²⁶ And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

³⁶ Your servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God. ³⁷ David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with you.

¹⁴ And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

⁴ And Jonathan spoke good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been toward you very good: ⁵ For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel: you saw it, and did rejoice: therefore then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all your servants as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house?

⁹ And David said to Saul, Why hear you men's words, saying, Behold, David seeks your hurt? ¹⁰ Behold, this day your eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered you today into my hand in the cave: and some bade me kill you: but my eye spared you; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed. ¹¹ Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of your robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of your robe, and killed you not, know you and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against you; yet you hunt my soul to take it.

¹⁷ And he said to David, you are more righteous than I: for you have rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded you with evil.

¹⁸ And he said, Why does my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in my hand?

²⁸ And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD forever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: ²⁹ Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father’s house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that has an issue, or that is a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls on the sword, or that lacks bread.

³⁹ And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.

¹⁶ David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. ¹⁷ And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

²⁴ And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace.

⁷ In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.

⁷ And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, who has given unto David a wise son over this great people.

³⁰ And hearken to the supplication of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear in heaven your dwelling place: and when you hear, forgive.

³⁸ Whatsoever prayer and supplication be made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who shall know every man the affliction of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:

⁴⁴ If your people go out to battle against their enemy, wherever you shall send them, and shall pray unto the LORD toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house that I have built for your name:

⁴⁸ And so return unto you with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto you toward their land, which you gave unto their fathers, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name: ⁴⁹ Then hear you their prayer and their supplication in heaven your dwelling place, and maintain their cause, ⁵⁰ And forgive your people that have sinned against you, and all their transgressions in which they have transgressed against you, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them:

⁵⁴ And it was so, that when Solomon had finished praying all this prayer and supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

⁶ But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, in which the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

²⁰ And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he heeded their prayer; because they put their trust in him.

¹¹ Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.

¹¹ Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD has loved his people, he has made you king over them. ¹² Huram said moreover, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who has given to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding, that might build a house for the LORD, and a house for his kingdom.

¹³ For Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, and five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven,

³⁸ If they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have carried them captives, and pray toward their land, which you gave unto their fathers, and toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for your name:

²⁰ And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall you be established; believe his prophets, so shall you prosper.

²¹ And the LORD sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he had come into the house of his god, sons that came forth of his own body struck him down there with the sword.

²² Take heed now that you fail not to do this: why should damage increase to the hurt of the kings?

⁸ Moreover I make a decree of what you shall do for the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, without delay expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered. ⁹ And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the requirement of the priests who are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail: ¹⁰ That they may offer sacrifices of sweet aroma unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons. ¹¹ Also I have made a decree, that whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be impaled thereon; and let his house be made a pile of rubble because of this. ¹² And the God that has caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put their hand to alter it and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done diligently.

¹ On that night the king could not sleep, and he commanded to be brought the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.

⁴ For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I would have held my tongue, although the enemy could never compensate for the king's loss.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath abated.

³ And Esther spoke yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite, and his plot that he had devised against the Jews.

⁸ Write you also for the Jews, as it pleases you, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the king's name, and sealed with the king's ring, may no man reverse. ⁹ Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the satraps, and the governors and princes of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia, a hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to its own writing, and unto every people according to their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language. ¹⁰ And he wrote in king Ahasuerus' name, and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by couriers on horseback, and riding on royal horses bred from swift horses:

¹⁰ The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, they killed; but on the spoil they laid not their hand.

²⁵ But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plot, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

³ For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews, and accepted by the multitude of his brethren, seeking the welfare of his people, and speaking peace to all his countrymen.

¹⁹ He shall deliver you in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch you.

¹² They sing to the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the flute.

¹⁵ He delivers the poor in his affliction, and opens their ears in oppression.

² The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

¹¹ Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

⁷ But as for me, I will come into your house in the multitude of your mercy: and in your fear will I worship toward your holy temple.

¹ [A shaggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, a Benjamite.] O LORD my God, in you do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me: ² Lest they tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. ³ O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; ⁴ If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is my enemy:)

⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] In the LORD put I my trust: how say you to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain? ² For, lo, the wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string, that they may secretly shoot at the upright in heart.

¹⁹ He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. ²⁰ The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me. ²¹ For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. ²² For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me. ²³ I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from my iniquity. ²⁴ Therefore has the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

⁴⁸ He delivers me from my enemies: yea, you lift me up above those that rise up against me: you have delivered me from the violent man.

⁵⁰ Great deliverance gives he to his king; and shows mercy to his anointed, to David, and to his descendants forevermore.

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence: so will I go about your altar, O LORD:

¹⁰ The LORD sits upon the flood; yea, the LORD sits as King forever.

¹⁴ But I trusted in you, O LORD: I said, you are my God.

⁷ You are my hiding place; you shall preserve me from trouble; you shall surround me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

¹ [A Psalm of David when he pretended madness before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.] I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

⁷ The angel of the LORD encamps round about them that fear him, and delivers them.

¹⁷ Lord, how long will you look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my precious life from the lions.

¹² The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth. ¹³ The Lord shall laugh at him: for he sees that his day is coming.

³² The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him. ³³ The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

³⁹ But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. ⁴⁰ And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: if laid on the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. ¹⁰ Trust not in oppression, and hope not vainly in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

² Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity: ³ Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words: ⁴ That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. ⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they talk of laying snares secretly; they say, Who shall see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, are deep.

¹⁴ But I will hope continually, and will yet praise you more and more. ¹⁵ My mouth shall show forth your righteousness and your salvation all the day; for I know not the limits thereof. ¹⁶ I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of your righteousness, even of yours only. ¹⁷ O God, you have taught me from my youth: and to this day have I declared your wondrous works. ¹⁸ Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed your strength unto this generation, and your power to every one that is to come.

²³ Nevertheless I am continually with you: you have held me by my right hand.

⁴ You hold my eyes from closing: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

¹ [A Psalm or Song of Asaph.] Keep not silence, O God: hold not your peace, and be not still, O God. ² For, lo, your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate you have lifted up the head. ³ They have taken crafty counsel against your people, and consulted against your hidden ones.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

³ Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto you daily.

You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping what I did not sow: ²³ Why then gave not you my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required my own with interest? ²⁴ And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that has ten pounds. ²⁵ (And they said unto him, Lord, he has ten pounds.) ²⁶ For I say unto you, That unto everyone who has shall be given; and from him that has not, even what he has shall be taken away from him. ²⁷ But those my enemies, who would not that I should reign over them, bring here, and slay them before me.
