⁷ Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

³ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

² That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

⁴ Come up unto me, and help me, that we may attack Gibeon: for it has made peace with Joshua and with the children of Israel.

¹¹ And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are you the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel has come to the king, even to his house.

⁴² And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: why then are you angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or has he given us any gift?

¹⁰ But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab’s hand: so he struck him with it in the fifth rib, and shed out his entrails to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri.

¹² And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still. ¹³ When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.

²³ Now Joab was over all the army of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites:

⁷ And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

¹¹ And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.

²⁸ Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar. ²⁹ And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, strike him down. ³⁰ And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus says the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me. ³¹ And the king said unto him, Do as he has said, and strike him down, and bury him; that you may take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father. ³² And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who struck down two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing of it, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the army of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the army of Judah. ³³ Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his descendants forever: but upon David, and upon his descendants, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace forever from the LORD. ³⁴ So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and struck him down, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness. ³⁵ And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the place of Abiathar.

¹¹ And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girds on his armor boast himself as he that puts it off.

¹⁰ You have indeed struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up: glory in this, and tarry at home: for why should you meddle to your harm, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you? ¹¹ But Amaziah would not listen. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. ¹² And Judah was defeated before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.

² And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

¹³ And Jesse begat his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and Shimea the third, ¹⁴ Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth. ¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, David the seventh: ¹⁶ Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.

³ Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

⁶ And David said, Whosoever smites the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.

²⁶ Also the valiant men of the armies were, Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

¹ Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war. ² They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin. ³ The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and Jeziel, and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; and Beracah, and Jehu the Anthothite, ⁴ And Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah, and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Jozabad the Gederathite, ⁵ Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite, ⁶ Elkanah, and Isshiah, and Azarel, and Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites, ⁷ And Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor. ⁸ And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David at the stronghold in the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and spear, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the gazelles upon the mountains;

⁷ And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand darics, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of bronze eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.

²⁷ And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.

¹⁴ And they buried him in his own sepulcher, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet ointments and various kinds of spices prepared by the perfumer’s art: and they made a very great fire in honor of him.

¹ Now Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And Jehoram his son reigned in his stead.

² How long will it be before you make an end of words? consider, and afterwards we will speak.

¹⁵ You are blessed of the LORD who made heaven and earth.

¹⁰ He delights not in the strength of the horse: he takes not pleasure in the legs of a man. ¹¹ The LORD takes pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

⁵ Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. ⁶ In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.

²³ It is as sport to a fool to do wrong: but a man of understanding has wisdom.

²² Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.

¹ A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is like releasing water: therefore leave off contention, before a quarrel starts.

¹⁸ Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice wage war.

²⁹ See you a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before obscure men.

⁸ Go not forth hastily to court, lest you know not what to do in the end, when your neighbor has put you to shame.

¹⁸ As a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ So is the man that deceives his neighbor, and says, Am I not jesting?

¹ He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

²¹ How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?

¹² The plunderers have come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

¹² Then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great pool that is in Gibeon.

¹⁰ For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge himself of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be filled full and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts holds a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

¹⁴ Declare you in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes: say you, Stand fast, and prepare you; for the sword shall devour all around you.

³⁷ Thus says the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock.

⁶ And the sword shall rage against his cities, and shall consume his districts, and devour them, because of their own counsels.

¹⁴ Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his power, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:

¹⁹ The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like deer’s feet, and he will make me walk upon my high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

⁷ Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you;

¹⁶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

³¹ Or what king, going to make war against another king, sits not down first, and consults whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation, and desires conditions of peace.

²⁸ You are they who have continued with me in my trials. ²⁹ And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father has appointed unto me;

²⁶ And the next day he showed himself unto them as they strove, and would have reconciled them again, saying, Sirs, you are brethren; why do you wrong one to another?

¹³ Watch, stand fast in the faith, be men, be strong.

¹⁰ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

¹⁶ The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chains: ¹⁷ But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. ¹⁸ The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, you know very well.

¹⁸ If he has wronged you, or owes you anything, put that on my account; ¹⁹ I Paul have written it with my own hand, I will repay it: nevertheless I do not say to you how you owe me even your own self besides.
