¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; ² To know wisdom and instruction; to comprehend the words of understanding; ³ To receive the discipline of wisdom, justice, and right, and equity; ⁴ To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion; ⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning, and the man of understanding may attain unto wise counsels; ⁶ To understand a proverb, and a figure; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. ⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and discipline. ⁸ Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother; ⁹ For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. ¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. ¹¹ If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil; ¹⁴ Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse' - ¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them, restrain thy foot from their path; ¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. ¹⁷ For in vain the net is spread in the eyes of any bird; ¹⁸ And these lie in wait for their own blood, they lurk for their own lives. ¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof. ²⁰ Wisdom crieth aloud in the streets, she uttereth her voice in the broad places; ²¹ She calleth at the head of the noisy streets, at the entrances of the gates, in the city, she uttereth her words: ²² 'How long, ye thoughtless, will ye love thoughtlessness? And how long will scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you. ²⁴ Because I have called, and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand, and no man attended, ²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof; ²⁶ I also, in your calamity, will laugh, I will mock when your dread cometh; ²⁷ When your dread cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when trouble and distress come upon you. ²⁸ Then will they call me, but I will not answer, they will seek me earnestly, but they shall not find me. ²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD; ³⁰ They would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof. ³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. ³² For the waywardness of the thoughtless shall slay them, and the confidence of fools shall destroy them. ³³ But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell securely, and shall be quiet without fear of evil.'

³ And the LORD said: 'My spirit shall not abide in man for ever, for that he also is flesh; therefore shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.'

⁷ And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said: 'Lie with me.' ⁸ But he refused, and said unto his master's wife: 'Behold, my master, having me, knoweth not what is in the house, and he hath put all that he hath into my hand; ⁹ he is not greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?' ¹⁰ And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her. ¹¹ And it came to pass on a certain day, when he went into the house to do his work, and there was none of the men of the house there within, ¹² that she caught him by his garment, saying: 'Lie with me.' And he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. ¹³ And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,

⁴² And Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck.

³ And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him: 'Thus saith the LORD, the God of the Hebrews: How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before Me? let My people go, that they may serve Me.

²⁸ And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long refuse ye to keep My commandments and My laws?

³ Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and ye shall keep My sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

⁸ with him do I speak mouth to mouth, even manifestly, and not in dark speeches; and the similitude of the LORD doth he behold; wherefore then were ye not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?'

²⁷ 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me.

³⁰ But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.' ³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under them. ³² And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.

¹⁰ and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that company died; what time the fire devoured two hundred and fifty men, and they became a sign.

⁵ Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the midst of the land whither ye go in to possess it. ⁶ Observe therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, that, when they hear all these statutes, shall say: 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.'

⁸ (13:9) thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him;

¹⁸ If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that will not hearken to the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them; ¹⁹ then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; ²⁰ and they shall say unto the elders of his city: 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he doth not hearken to our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.' ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked - thou didst wax fat, thou didst grow thick, thou didst become gross - and he forsook God who made him, and contemned the Rock of his salvation. ¹⁶ They roused Him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations did they provoke Him. ¹⁷ They sacrificed unto demons, no-gods, gods that they knew not, new gods that came up of late, which your fathers dreaded not. ¹⁸ Of the Rock that begot thee thou wast unmindful, and didst forget God that bore thee. ¹⁹ And the LORD saw, and spurned, because of the provoking of His sons and His daughters. ²⁰ And He said: 'I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faithfulness. ²¹ They have roused Me to jealousy with a no-god; they have provoked Me with their vanities; and I will rouse them to jealousy with a no-people; I will provoke them with a vile nation. ²² For a fire is kindled in My nostril, and burneth unto the depths of the nether-world, and devoureth the earth with her produce, and setteth ablaze the foundations of the mountains. ²³ I will heap evils upon them; I will spend Mine arrows upon them; ²⁴ The wasting of hunger, and the devouring of the fiery bolt, and bitter destruction; and the teeth of beasts will I send upon them, with the venom of crawling things of the dust. ²⁵ Without shall the sword bereave, and in the chambers terror; slaying both young man and virgin, the suckling with the man of gray hairs. ²⁶ I thought I would make an end of them, I would make their memory cease from among men; ²⁷ Were it not that I dreaded the enemy's provocation, lest their adversaries should misdeem, lest they should say: Our hand is exalted, and not the LORD hath wrought all this.' ²⁸ For they are a nation void of counsel, and there is no understanding in them. ²⁹ If they were wise, they would understand this, they would discern their latter end. ³⁰ How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had given them over and the LORD had delivered them up? ³¹ For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. ³² For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter; ³³ Their wine is the venom of serpents, and the cruel poison of asps. ³⁴ 'Is not this laid up in store with Me, sealed up in My treasuries? ³⁵ Vengeance is Mine, and recompense, against the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that are to come upon them shall make haste. ³⁶ For the LORD will judge His people, and repent Himself for His servants; when He seeth that their stay is gone, and there is none remaining, shut up or left at large. ³⁷ And it is said: Where are their gods, the rock in whom they trusted; ³⁸ Who did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink-offering? let him rise up and help you, let him be your protection. ³⁹ See now that I, even I, am He, and there is no god with Me; I kill, and I make alive; I have wounded, and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of My hand. ⁴⁰ For I lift up My hand to heaven, and say: As I live for ever, ⁴¹ If I whet My glittering sword, and My hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to Mine adversaries, and will recompense them that hate Me. ⁴² I will make Mine arrows drunk with blood, and My sword shall devour flesh; with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy.' ⁴³ Sing aloud, O ye nations, of His people; for He doth avenge the blood of His servants, and doth render vengeance to His adversaries, and doth make expiation for the land of His people. ⁴⁴ And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun.

¹⁴ Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress.'

¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death. ¹⁷ And he told her all his heart, and said unto her: 'There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite unto God from my mother's womb; if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.' ¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying: 'Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart.' Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand. ¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and had the seven locks of his head shaven off; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said: 'The Philistines are upon thee, Samson.' And he awoke out of his sleep, and said: 'I will go out as at other times, and shake myself.' But he knew not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house.

²⁵ If one man sin against another, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him?' But they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

¹⁸ And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not answer you in that day.'

³² And David said to Abigail: 'Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent thee this day to meet me; ³³ and blessed be thy discretion, and blessed be thou, that hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from finding redress for myself with mine own hand.

²⁴ And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her; and she bore a son, and called his name Solomon. And the LORD loved him; ²⁵ and He sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name Jedidiah, for the LORD'S sake.

¹¹ And Joab said unto the man that told him: 'And, behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have had to give thee ten pieces of silver, and a girdle.' ¹² And the man said unto Joab: 'Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, yet would I not put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying: Beware that none touch the young man Absalom. ¹³ Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against mine own life - and there is no matter hid from the king - then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.'

¹² And Solomon sat upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established firmly.

⁹ Give Thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge Thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this Thy great people?' ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the LORD, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him: 'Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern justice; ¹² behold, I have done according to thy word: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there hath been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

³¹ (5:11) For he was wiser than all men: than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the nations round about. ³² (5:12) And he spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five.

²⁰ But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said: 'Behold, my master hath spared this Naaman the Aramean, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought; as the LORD liveth, I will surely run after him, and take somewhat of him.' ²¹ So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw one running after him, he alighted from the chariot to meet him, and said: 'Is all well?' ²² And he said: 'All is well. My master hath sent me, saying: Behold, even now there are come to me from the hill-country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets; give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of raiment.' ²³ And Naaman said: 'Be content, take two talents.' And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of raiment, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bore them before him. ²⁴ And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and deposited them in the house; and he let the men go, and they departed. ²⁵ But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him: 'Whence comest thou, Gehazi?' And he said: 'Thy servant went no whither.' ²⁶ And he said unto him: 'Went not my heart with thee, when the man turned back from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and men-servants and maid-servants? ²⁷ The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever.' And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

⁹ Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about; for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.

⁵ and of all my sons - for the LORD hath given me many sons - He hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.

²⁸ And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour; and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him: 'Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten?' Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.'

¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, till there was no remedy.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath assuaged.

⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow mischief, reap the same.

¹⁴ Yet they said unto God: 'Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of Thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto Him?' -

²² Receive, I pray thee, instruction from His mouth, and lay up His words in thy heart.

² There are that remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed them. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless, they take the widow's ox for a pledge.

⁹ Will God hear his cry, when trouble cometh upon him?

²⁸ And unto man He said: 'Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'

³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the tillers thereof to be disappointed -

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?

¹⁰ Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be it from God, that He should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that He should commit iniquity.

¹⁶ If now thou hast understanding, hear this; hearken to the voice of my words.

³⁴ Men of understanding will say unto me, yea, every wise man that heareth me:

¹¹ Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?' ¹² There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

¹ Happy is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the scornful.

⁴ He that sitteth in heaven laugheth, the Lord hath them in derision.

⁹ (5:10) For there is no sincerity in their mouth; their inward part is a yawning gulf, their throat is an open sepulchre; they make smooth their tongue.

¹⁴ (7:15) Behold, he travaileth with iniquity; yea, he conceiveth mischief, and bringeth forth falsehood. ¹⁵ (7:16) He hath digged a pit, and hollowed it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ (7:17) His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁶ (9:17) The LORD hath made Himself known, He hath executed judgment, the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah

⁸ He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; in secret places doth he slay the innocent; his eyes are on the watch for the helpless. ⁹ He lieth in wait in a secret place as a lion in his lair, he lieth in wait to catch the poor; he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him up in his net. ¹⁰ He croucheth, he boweth down, and the helpless fall into his mighty claws.

¹² He is like a lion that is eager to tear in pieces, and like a young lion lurking in secret places.

⁴¹ (18:42) They cried, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but He answered them not.

⁷ (19:8) The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

¹² What man is he that feareth the LORD? him will He instruct in the way that He should choose. ¹³ His soul shall abide in prosperity; and his seed shall inherit the land.

⁴ I have not sat with men of falsehood; neither will I go in with dissemblers. ⁵ I hate the gathering of evil doers, and will not sit with the wicked.

¹ A Psalm of David. Unto thee, O LORD, do I call; my Rock, be not Thou deaf unto me; lest, if Thou be silent unto me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

²⁰ (31:21) Thou hidest them in the covert of Thy presence from the plottings of man; Thou concealest them in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

¹¹ (34:12) Come, ye children, hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me the pit, even their net, without cause have they digged for my soul.

²³ (55:24) But Thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the nethermost pit; men of blood and deceit shall not live out half their days; but as for me, I will trust in Thee.

⁹ (58:10) Before your pots can feel the thorns, He will sweep it away with a whirlwind, the raw and the burning alike.

⁵ (64:6) They encourage one another in an evil matter; they converse of laying snares secretly; they ask, who would see them. ⁶ (64:7) They search out iniquities, they have accomplished a diligent search; even in the inward thought of every one, and the deep heart.

² I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter dark sayings concerning days of old;

³⁴ When He slew them, then they would inquire after Him, and turn back and seek God earnestly. ³⁵ And they remembered that God was their Rock, and the Most High God their redeemer. ³⁶ But they beguiled Him with their mouth, and lied unto Him with their tongue.

¹¹ (81:12) But My people hearkened not to My voice; and Israel would none of Me.

⁶ (92:7) A brutish man knoweth not, neither doth a fool understand this. ⁷ (92:8) When the wicked spring up as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they may be destroyed for ever.

⁸ Consider, ye brutish among the people; and ye fools, when will ye understand?

¹¹ Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the Most High.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all they that do thereafter; His praise endureth for ever.

⁷ He shall not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is stedfast, trusting in the LORD. ⁸ His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he gaze upon his adversaries.

⁹ BETH. Wherewithal shall a young man keep his way pure? By taking heed thereto according to Thy word.

⁹⁸ Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers; for Thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than mine elders, because I have keep Thy precepts. ¹⁰¹ I have refrained my feet from every evil way, in order that I might observe Thy word.

¹¹¹ Thy testimonies have I taken as a heritage for ever; for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

¹³⁰ The opening of Thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

¹⁷³ Let Thy hand be ready to help me; for I have chosen Thy precepts.

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto Me because they have thrust him through; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born.

²² Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? ²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

² And behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed; and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, be of good cheer, thy sins are forgiven thee.

¹³ But go ye and learn what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

²² But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good cheer, thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

²⁷ What I tell you in the darkness, speak ye in the light, and what ye hear in the ear, proclaim upon the house-tops.

²⁹ Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your souls. ³⁰ For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

² And there were gathered unto him great multitudes, so that he entered into the boat, and sat, and all the multitude stood on the beach.

¹⁰ And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? ¹¹ And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. ¹² For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath. ¹³ Therefore speak I to them in parables, because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And unto them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand, And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive; ¹⁵ For this people's heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. ¹⁷ For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which ye see, and saw them not, and to hear the things which ye hear, and heard them not.

³⁴ All these things spake Jesus in parables unto the multitudes, and without a parable spake he nothing unto them: ³⁵ that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.

⁵¹ Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. ⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

⁵⁴ And coming into his own country he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

⁵ While he was yet speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, hear ye him.

¹⁷ And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I bear with you? bring him hither to me.

⁵ But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, one to his merchandise, ⁶ and the rest laid hold on his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her own chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

³ Then were gathered together the chief priests and the elders of the people, unto the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou to it. ⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed, and he went away and hanged himself.

¹³ If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send unto them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall kill and persecute,

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from covetousness; for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. ¹⁶ And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully; ¹⁷ and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do; I will pull down my barns, and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years, take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be? ²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²⁵ When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us, and he shall answer and say to you, I know you not whence ye are, ²⁶ then shall ye begin to say, We did eat and drink in thy presence, and thou didst teach in our streets, ²⁷ and he shall say, I tell you, I know not whence ye are, depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. ²⁸ There shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and yourselves cast forth without.

¹⁸ And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a field, and I must needs go out and see it, I pray thee have me excused. ¹⁹ And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them, I pray thee have me excused. ²⁰ And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

²⁴ For I say unto you, that none of those men that were bidden shall taste of my supper.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day; ²⁰ and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. ²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

⁴² saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

⁹ And when ye shall hear of wars and tumults, be not terrified; for these things must needs come to pass first, but the end is not immediately.

¹⁹ In your patience ye shall win your souls.

²³ Woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days! for there shall be great distress upon the land, and wrath unto this people. ²⁴ And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. ²⁵ And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the billows, ²⁶ men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.

³⁴ But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare; ³⁵ for so shall it come upon all them that dwell on the face of all the earth.

¹⁸ He that believeth on him is not judged; he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil. ²⁰ For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

³⁶ Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified. ³⁷ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? ³⁸ And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁹ Repent ye therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord,

³⁰ while thy stretchest forth thy hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of thy holy Servant Jesus.

²⁰ Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.

⁹ tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that worketh evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek,

⁵ But if our righteousness commendeth the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who visiteth with wrath? (I speak after the manner of men.)

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre, With their tongues they have used deceit; The poison of asps is under their lips:

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long, We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²¹ But as to Israel he saith, All the day long did I spread out my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

¹⁸ For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly, and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent.

²⁴ but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

³⁰ But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who was made unto us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption:

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men, judge ye what I say.

¹⁷ Wherefore Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch no unclean thing, And I will receive you,

⁷ Be not deceived, God is not mocked; for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption, but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them,

³ in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall in no wise escape.

⁹ In like manner, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefastness and sobriety, not with braided hair, and gold or pearls or costly raiment, ¹⁰ but (which becometh women professing godliness) through good works.

³ not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre, but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money,

⁹ But they that are minded to be rich fall into a temptation and a snare and many foolish and hurtful lusts, such as drown men in destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil; which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁵ having been reminded of the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice, and, I am persuaded, in thee also.

²² But flee youthful lusts, and follow after righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

¹⁵ And that from a babe thou hast known the sacred writings which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ Every scripture, inspired of God, is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness. ¹⁷ That the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.

⁶ the younger men likewise exhort to be sober-minded:

¹⁴ But solid food is for fullgrown men, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

³⁸ But the righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him. ³⁹ But we are not of them that shrink back unto perdition, but of them that have faith unto the saving of the soul.

²⁵ choosing rather to share ill treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season,

⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures.

¹ Come now, ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are rusted, and their rust shall be for a testimony against you, and shall eat your flesh as fire. Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out; and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure, ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.

⁵ who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

³ Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel, ⁴ but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

¹⁴ having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstedfast souls, having a heart exercised in covetousness, children of cursing, ¹⁵ having forsaken the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing, ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression; a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet.

³ knowing this first, that in the last days mockers shall come, walking after their own lusts,

¹⁶ as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, wherein are some things hard to be understood, which the ignorant and unstedfast wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

⁹ And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and lived wantonly with her, shall weep and wail over her, when they look upon the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. ¹¹ And the merchants of the earth shall weep and shall mourn over her, for no man buyeth their merchandise any more, ¹² merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stone, and pearl, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, ¹³ and cinnamon, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep, and merchandise of horses and chariots and slaves, and souls of men. ¹⁴ And the fruits which thy soul lusted after are gone from thee, and all things that were dainty and sumptuous are perished from thee, and men shall find them no more at all. ¹⁵ The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, ¹⁶ and saying, Woe, woe, the great city, she that was arrayed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come; he that will, let him take the water of life freely.
