²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee, and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

⁹ And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel: Come near before the LORD; for He hath heard your murmurings.' ¹⁰ And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken; wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that the LORD smote Nabal, so that he died.

⁹ And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him; now he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household in Tirzah; ¹⁰ and Zimri went in and smote him, and killed him, in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and reigned in his stead.

¹¹ And Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and everything as to how the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

¹ On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews' enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her. ² And the king took off his ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul?

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

⁶ (39:7) Surely man walketh as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

¹⁷ (49:18) For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; his wealth shall not descend after him. ¹⁸ (49:19) Though while he lived he blessed his soul: 'Men will praise thee, when thou shalt do well to thyself'; ¹⁹ (49:20) It shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see the light.

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

³⁰ They were not estranged from their craving, their food was yet in their mouths,

⁴ Riches profit not in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivereth from death.

⁸ He that augmenteth his substance by interest and increase, gathereth it for him that is gracious to the poor.

¹⁸ And I hated all my labour wherein I laboured under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shown myself wise under the sun. ¹⁴ (5:13) and those riches perish by evil adventure; and if he hath begotten a son, there is nothing in his hand. ¹⁵ (5:14) As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he go back as he came, and shall take nothing for his labour, which he may carry away in his hand. ¹⁶ (5:15) And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go; and what profit hath he that he laboureth for the wind?

¹¹ As the partridge that broodeth over young which she hath not brought forth, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days he shall leave them, and at his end he shall be a fool.

¹ Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. ² Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and his lords, his consorts and his concubines, might drink therein. ³ Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his lords, his consorts and his concubines, drank in them. ⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone. ⁵ In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace; and the king saw the palm of the hand that wrote. ⁶ Then the king's countenance was changed in him, and his thoughts affrighted him; and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.

²⁵ And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE MENE, TEKEL UPHARSIN. ²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE, God hath numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end. ²⁷ TEKEL, Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. ²⁸ PERES, thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.' ²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should rule as one of three in the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.

¹⁰ For though they be like tangled thorns, and be drunken according to their drink, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

⁴⁸ But if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth to come, ⁴⁹ and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken, ⁵⁰ the lord of that servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, ⁵¹ and shall cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

⁴⁰ Ye foolish ones, did not he that made the outside make the inside also?

²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child, and they shall in no wise escape.

⁷ for we brought nothing into the world, and it is certain that neither can we carry anything out,

¹⁴ whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For it will be a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then also vanisheth away.
