²⁰ Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

²⁹ And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.

³⁴ And Jacob rent his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

¹⁸ And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water; because of all your sin which ye sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him.

¹⁶ David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and as often as he went in, he lay all night upon the earth. ¹⁷ And the elders of his house arose, and stood beside him, to raise him up from the earth; but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. ¹⁸ And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said: 'Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice; how then shall we tell him that the child is dead, so that he do himself some harm?' ¹⁹ But when David saw that his servants whispered together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said unto his servants: 'Is the child dead?' And they said: 'He is dead.' ²⁰ Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped; then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

³ And all the children of Israel looked on, when the fire came down, and the glory of the LORD was upon the house; and they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and prostrated themselves, and gave thanks unto the LORD; 'for He is good, for His mercy endureth for ever.'

³ And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair of my head and of my beard, and sat down appalled.

³⁹ And coming forward a little, he fell on his face, and prayed, saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt.

⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,
