⁷ O LORD, Thou hast enticed me, and I was enticed, Thou hast overcome me, and hast prevailed; I am become a laughing-stock all the day, every one mocketh me.

²² And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said: 'Lord, wherefore hast Thou dealt ill with this people? why is it that Thou hast sent me? ²³ For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Thy name, he hath dealt ill with this people; neither hast Thou delivered Thy people at all.'

¹¹ And Moses said unto the LORD: 'Wherefore hast Thou dealt ill with Thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in Thy sight, that Thou layest the burden of all this people upon me? ¹² Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth, that Thou shouldest say unto me: Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing-father carrieth the sucking child, unto the land which Thou didst swear unto their fathers? ¹³ Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they trouble me with their weeping, saying: Give us flesh, that we may eat. ¹⁴ I am not able to bear all this people myself alone, because it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ And if Thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray Thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in Thy sight; and let me not look upon my wretchedness.'

²³ And he went up from thence unto Beth-el; and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him: 'Go up, thou baldhead; go up, thou baldhead.'

⁶ (22:7) But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people. ⁷ (22:8) All they that see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head:

¹⁵ But when I halt they rejoice, and gather themselves together; the abjects gather themselves together against me, and those whom I know not; they tear me, and cease not; ¹⁶ With the profanest mockeries of backbiting they gnash at me with their teeth.

⁹ (69:10) Because zeal for Thy house hath eaten me up, and the reproaches of them that reproach Thee are fallen upon me. ¹⁰ (69:11) And I wept with my soul fasting, and that became unto me a reproach. ¹¹ (69:12) I made sackcloth also my garment, and I became a byword unto them. ¹² (69:13) They that sit in the gate talk of me; and I am the song of the drunkards.

⁶ Then said I: 'Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak; for I am a child.' ⁷ But the LORD said unto me: say not: I am a child; for to whomsoever I shall send thee thou shalt go, and whatsoever I shall command thee thou shalt speak. ⁸ Be not afraid of them; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD.

¹⁸ For, behold, I have made thee this day a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and brazen walls, against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and against the people of the land. ¹⁹ And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee; For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to deliver thee.'

¹⁰ Woe is me, my mother, that thou hast borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have not lent, neither have men lent to me; yet every one of them doth curse me.

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, so that it refuseth to be healed? Wilt Thou indeed be unto me as a deceitful brook, as waters that fail?

¹⁶ As for me, I have not hastened from being a shepherd after Thee; neither have I desired the woeful day; Thou knowest it; that which came out of my lips was manifest before Thee.

⁹ And if I say: 'I will not make mention of Him, nor speak any more in His name', then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I weary myself to hold it in, but cannot.

²⁶ 'The LORD hath made thee priest in the stead of Jehoiada the priest, that there should be officers in the house of the LORD for every man that is mad, and maketh himself a prophet, that thou shouldest put him in the stocks and in the collar.

¹⁴ I am become a derision to all my people, and their song all the day.

¹⁴ So a spirit lifted me up, and took me away; and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit, and the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.

⁷ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come, Israel shall know it. The prophet is a fool, the man of the spirit is mad! For the multitude of thine iniquity, the enmity is great.

⁸ But I truly am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of justice, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things, and they scoffed at him.

⁶³ And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and beat him. ⁶⁴ And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy; who is he that struck thee?

¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers set him at nought, and mocked him, and arraying him in gorgeous apparel sent him back to Pilate.

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them scoffed at him, saying, He saved others, let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen. ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, offering him vinegar,

¹⁸ And certain also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, What would this babbler say? others, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods; because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.

³² Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again.

⁹ For, I think, God hath set forth us the apostles last of all, as men doomed to death; for we are made a spectacle unto the world, both to angels and men. ¹⁰ We are fools for Christ's sake, but ye are wise in Christ, we are weak, but ye are strong, ye have glory, but we have dishonor. ¹¹ Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling-place, ¹² and we toil, working with our own hands; being reviled, we bless, being persecuted, we endure, ¹³ being defamed, we entreat; we are made as the filth of the world, the offscouring of all things, even until now.

⁶ Or I only and Barnabas, have we not a right to forbear working?

³⁶ and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
