²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before Thee to speak good for them, to turn away Thy wrath from them.

²² And the men turned from thence, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. ²³ And Abraham drew near, and said: 'Wilt Thou indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? ²⁴ Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt Thou indeed sweep away and not forgive the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? ²⁵ That be far from Thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from Thee; shall not the judge of all the earth do justly?' ²⁶ And the LORD said: 'If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will forgive all the place for their sake.' ²⁷ And Abraham answered and said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes. ²⁸ Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; wilt Thou destroy all the city for lack of five?' And He said: 'I will not destroy it, if I find there forty and five.' ²⁹ And he spoke unto Him yet again, and said: 'Peradventure there shall be forty found there.' And He said: 'I will not do it for the forty's sake.' ³⁰ And he said: 'Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Peradventure there shall thirty be found there.' And He said: 'I will not do it, if I find thirty there.' ³¹ And he said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord. Peradventure there shall be twenty found there.' And He said: 'I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake.' ³² And he said: 'Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Peradventure ten shall be found there.' And He said: 'I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.'

¹⁷ (24:18) And he said to David: 'Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rendered unto me good, whereas I have rendered unto thee evil. ¹⁸ (24:19) And thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me; forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me up into thy hand, thou didst not kill me. ¹⁹ (24:20) For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that which thou hast done unto me this day.

²³ Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen stood before Him in the breach, to turn back His wrath, lest He should destroy them.

⁴ In return for my love they are my adversaries; but I am all prayer. ⁵ And they have laid upon me evil for good, and hatred for my love:

⁹⁵ The wicked have waited for me to destroy me; but I will consider Thy testimonies.

¹³ Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

²⁷ Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein; and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.

⁸ He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a fence, a serpent shall bite him.

¹⁶ Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to Me; for I will not hear thee.

¹⁴ Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry unto Me for their trouble.'

⁷ Though our iniquities testify against us, O LORD, work Thou for Thy name's sake; for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against Thee. ⁸ O Thou hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest Thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night? ⁹ Why shouldest thou be as a man overcome, as a mighty man that cannot save? Yet Thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and Thy name is called upon us; leave us not. ¹⁰ Thus saith the LORD unto this people: Even so have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet; therefore the LORD doth not accept them, now will He remember their iniquity, and punish their sins. ¹¹ And the LORD said unto me: 'Pray not for this people for their good.

²⁰ We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, even the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against Thee.

²² Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them; for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

³⁰ And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the breach before Me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none. ³¹ Therefore have I poured out Mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; their own way have I brought upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.'

¹ And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. ² And the LORD said unto Satan: 'The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan, yea, the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee; is not this man a brand plucked out of the fire?'

³² Jesus answered them, Many good works have I showed you from my Father, for which of those works do ye stone me?

²⁵ But this cometh to pass, that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
