²² And Reuben answered them, saying: 'Spoke I not unto you, saying: Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore also, behold, his blood is required.'

¹⁰ And He said: 'What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto Me from the ground.

⁵ And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it; and at the hand of man, even at the hand of every man's brother, will I require the life of man. ⁶ Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made He man.

²¹ And Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand; and said: 'Let us not take his life.' ²² And Reuben said unto them: 'Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand upon him' - that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

²⁹ And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes. ³⁰ And he returned unto his brethren, and said: 'The child is not; and as for me, whither shall I go?'

³² And the LORD will return his blood upon his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, and my father David knew it not: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

²² Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said: 'The LORD look upon it, and require it.'
