¹³ (32:14) And he lodged there that night; and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother:

² and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood over against him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed down to the earth,

²⁰ (32:21) and ye shall say: Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us.' For he said: 'I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.' ²¹ (32:22) So the present passed over before him; and he himself lodged that night in the camp.

¹⁰ And Jacob said: 'Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favour in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

⁶ And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down to him with their faces to the earth.

¹¹ And their father Israel said unto them: 'If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and ladanum, nuts, and almonds;

²⁶ And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down to him to the earth.

⁸ Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee; wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes; for we come on a good day; give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thy hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David.'

²⁷ And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

⁸ A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; whithersoever he turneth, he prospereth.

¹⁶ A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

⁶ Many will entreat the favour of the liberal man; and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifieth anger, and a present in the bosom strong wrath.
