⁵ And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Say unto the children of Israel: Ye are a stiffnecked people; if I go up into the midst of thee for one moment, I shall consume thee; therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.'

²¹ I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I will know.'

¹² And he said: 'Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him; for now I know that thou art a God-fearing man, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, from Me.'

³ unto a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people; lest I consume thee in the way.' ⁴ And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned; and no man did put on him his ornaments.

²¹ 'Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.'

⁴⁵ (17:10) 'Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' And they fell upon their faces. ⁴⁶ (17:11) And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Take thy fire-pan, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from the LORD: the plague is begun.'

² And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God hath led thee these forty years in the wilderness, that He might afflict thee, to prove thee, to know what was in thy heart, whether thou wouldest keep His commandments, or no.

²⁰ In a moment they die, even at midnight; the people are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away without hand.

¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! They are wholly consumed by terrors.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts;

¹² And in that day did the Lord, the GOD of hosts, call to weeping, and to lamentation, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth;

⁶ For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands fell upon her.
