¹⁸ And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

²⁷ The king said also unto Zadok the priest: 'Seest thou? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. ²⁸ See, I will tarry in the plains of the wilderness, until there come word from you to announce unto me.'

³¹ And one told David, saying: 'Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.' And David said: 'O LORD, I pray Thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.' ³² And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the ascent, where God was wont to be worshipped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head. ³³ And David said unto him: 'If thou passest on with me, then thou wilt be a burden unto Me; ³⁴ but if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom: I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant in time past, so will I now be thy servant; then wilt thou defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.

⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and kept on cursing as he came.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom: 'Long live the king, long live the king.' ¹⁷ And Absalom said to Hushai: 'Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?' ¹⁸ And Hushai said unto Absalom: 'Nay; but whom the LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him will I abide. ¹⁹ And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father's presence, so will I be in thy presence.'

²³ Now the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man inquired of the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

² and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only;

²¹ And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said unto David: 'Arise ye, and pass quickly over the water; for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you.' ²² Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan; by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over the Jordan.

²⁴ When David was come to Mahanaim, Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

³¹ (19:32) And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim; and he passed on to Jordan with the king, to bring him on the way over the Jordan. ³² (19:33) Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old; and he had provided the king with sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. ³³ (19:34) And the king said unto Barzillai: 'Come thou over with me, and I will sustain thee with me in Jerusalem.' ³⁴ (19:35) And Barzillai said unto the king: 'How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem? ³⁵ (19:36) I am this day fourscore years old; can I discern between good and bad? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king? ³⁶ (19:37) Thy servant would but just go over the Jordan with the king; and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward? ³⁷ (19:38) Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back, that I may die in mine own city, by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.' ³⁸ (19:39) And the king answered: 'Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee; and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.' ³⁹ (19:40) And all the people went over the Jordan, and the king went over; and the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.

⁴ Then said the king to Amasa: 'Call me the men of Judah together within three days, and be thou here present.'

And Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. ¹⁰ But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand; so he smote him therewith in the groin, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. And Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri. ¹¹ And there stood by him one of Joab's young men, and said: 'He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David let him follow Joab.' ¹² And Amasa lay wallowing in his blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he carried Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a garment over him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still.

¹⁹ We are of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel; seekest thou to destroy a city and a mother in Israel? why wilt thou swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?' ²⁰ And Joab answered and said: 'Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.

⁸ These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite; he lifted up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time. ⁹ And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they jeoparded their lives against the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away;

¹⁶ And the three mighty men broke through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David; but he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.

⁵ Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did unto me, even what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.

⁷ But show kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table; for so they drew nigh unto me when I fled from Absalom thy brother.

³² And the LORD will return his blood upon his own head, because he fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, and my father David knew it not: Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.

²⁰ Judah and Israel were many, as the sand which is by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking and making merry.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him: 'Have we made thee of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten?' Then the prophet forbore, and said: 'I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.'

²⁰ But Amaziah would not hear; for it was of God, that He might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom.

⁴ And the thing was right in the eyes of the king and of all the congregation.

⁶¹ And of the children of the priests: the children of Habaiah, the children of Hakkoz, the children of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called after their name.

²¹ And the word pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan;

¹⁴ Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him: 'Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and in the morning speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon; then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet.' And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.

¹² He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands can perform nothing substantial. ¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day-time, and grope at noonday as in the night.

³ Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

³ (3:4) But thou, O LORD, art a shield about me; my glory, and the lifter up of my head. ⁴ (3:5) With my voice I call unto the LORD, and He answereth me out of His holy mountain. Selah ⁵ (3:6) I lay me down, and I sleep; I awake, for the LORD sustaineth me.

⁸ (4:9) In peace will I both lay me down and sleep; for Thou, LORD, makest me dwell alone in safety.

¹⁰ (5:11) Hold them guilty, O God, let them fall by their own counsels; cast them down in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against Thee.

¹⁵ (7:16) He hath digged a pit, and hollowed it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ (7:17) His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁶ (9:17) The LORD hath made Himself known, He hath executed judgment, the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah

⁹ For He spoke, and it was; He commanded, and it stood. ¹⁰ The LORD bringeth the counsel of the nations to nought; He maketh the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.

⁸ (34:9) O consider and see that the LORD is good; happy is the man that taketh refuge in Him. ⁹ (34:10) O fear the LORD, ye His holy ones; for there is no want to them that fear Him. ¹⁰ (34:11) The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger; but they that seek the LORD want not any good thing.

²⁵ Let them not say in their heart: 'Aha, we have our desire'; let them not say: 'We have swallowed him up.'

⁸ (55:9) I would haste me to a shelter from the stormy wind and tempest.'

²³ (55:24) But Thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the nethermost pit; men of blood and deceit shall not live out half their days; but as for me, I will trust in Thee.

³ The foolishness of man perverteth his way; and his heart fretteth against the LORD.

²¹ There are many devices in a man's heart; but the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹² A prudent man seeth the evil, and hideth himself; but the thoughtless pass on, and are punished.

¹ The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are secure as a young lion.

¹⁵ As a roaring lion, and a ravenous bear; so is a wicked ruler over a poor people.

⁸ Open thy mouth for the dumb, in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.

¹ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days. ² Divide a portion into seven, yea, even into eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

⁷ Behold, it is the litter of Solomon; threescore mighty men are about it, of the mighty men of Israel.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand; for God is with us.

¹³ For he hath said: by the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent; in that I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and have brought down as one mighty the inhabitants; ¹⁴ And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

⁷ Therefore shall all hands be slack, and every heart of man shall melt.

¹ The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and cometh unto Egypt; and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at His presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt within it.

¹⁴ Unto him that is thirsty bring ye water! The inhabitants of the land of Tema did meet the fugitive with his bread.

⁸ But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

²² There is no peace, saith the LORD concerning the wicked.

⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him, and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity, desolation and destruction are in their paths. ⁸ The way of peace they know not, and there is no right in their goings; they have made them crooked paths, whosoever goeth therein doth not know peace.

³⁷ Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

⁵ And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was said thus unto it: 'Arise, devour much flesh.'

⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the enclosure of their heart; and there will I devour them like a lioness; the wild beast shall tear them.

³ And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from My sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them.

³ The pride of thy heart hath beguiled thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, thy habitation on high; that sayest in thy heart: 'Who shall bring me down to the ground?'

⁶ Therefore I will make Samaria a heap in the field, a place for the planting of vineyards; and I will pour down the stones thereof into the valley, and I will uncover the foundations thereof.

⁷ Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, and against the man that is near unto Me, saith the LORD of hosts; smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered; and I will turn My hand upon the little ones.

¹⁶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

³⁸ But the husbandmen, when they saw the son, said among themselves, This is the heir, come, let us kill him, and take his inheritance.

² But Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

¹⁶ then let them that are in Judea flee unto the mountains; ¹⁷ let him that is on the housetop not come down to take out things that are in his house; ¹⁸ and let him that is in the field not return back to take his garments.

³¹ Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended in me this night; for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed, and he went away and hanged himself.

⁸ And his lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely; for the sons of this world are for their own generation wiser than the sons of the light.

⁵⁰ nor do ye take account that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. ⁸ Jesus answered, I told you that I am he, if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way; ⁹ that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.

³² who, knowing the ordinance of God, that they that practice such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but also consent with them that practice them.

¹³ communicating to the necessities of the saints, given to hospitality.

¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the discernment of the discerning will I bring to nought. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness:

⁵⁴ But when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

⁴ For indeed we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened, not for that we would be unclothed, but that we would be clothed upon, that what is mortal may be swallowed up of life.
