¹¹ For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter.

⁶ And he overtook them, and he spoke unto them these words. ⁷ And they said unto him: 'Wherefore speaketh my lord such words as these? Far be it from thy servants that they should do such a thing.

⁵ And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan: 'As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this deserveth to die; ⁶ and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.' ⁷ And Nathan said to David: 'Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel: I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

⁶ And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words. ⁷ Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them: 'Ye lend upon pledge, every one to his brother.' And I held a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said unto them: 'We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that sold themselves unto the heathen; and would ye nevertheless sell your brethren, and should they sell themselves unto us?' Then held they their peace, and found never a word. ⁹ Also I said: 'The thing that ye do is not good; ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? ¹⁰ And I likewise, my brethren and my servants, have lent them money and corn. I pray you, let us leave off this exaction. ¹¹ Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their fields, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundred pieces of silver, and the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.' ¹² Then said they: 'We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do, even as thou sayest.' Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise. ¹³ Also I shook out my lap, and said: 'So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.' And all the congregation said: 'Amen', and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

²⁵ And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God: 'Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

⁶ Wherefore I abhor my words, and repent, seeing I am dust and ashes.

¹¹ Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth, I afflicted my soul with fasting; and my prayer, may it return into mine own bosom.

⁹ (38:10) Lord, all my desire is before Thee; and my sighing is not hid from Thee.

¹ (42:1) For the Leader; Maschil of the sons of Korah. (42:2) As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee, O God.

⁹ (69:10) Because zeal for Thy house hath eaten me up, and the reproaches of them that reproach Thee are fallen upon me.

¹³⁹ My zeal hath undone me, because mine adversaries have forgotten Thy words.

⁶ My soul waiteth for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning; yea, more than watchmen for the morning.

¹⁹ He will fulfil the desire of them that fear Him; He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

¹⁶ A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil; but the fool behaveth overbearingly, and is confident.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth alway; but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into evil.

⁶ Set me as a seal upon thy heart, as a seal upon thine arm; for love is strong as death, jealousy is cruel as the grave; the flashes thereof are flashes of fire, a very flame of the LORD.

⁸ Yea, in the way of Thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for Thee; to Thy name and to Thy memorial is the desire of our soul.

² For all these things hath My hand made, and so all these things came to be, saith the LORD; but on this man will I look, even on him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at My word.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself: 'Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf untrained; turn thou me, and I shall be turned, for Thou art the LORD my God. ¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned, I repented, and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh; I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.' ²⁰ Is Ephraim a darling son unto Me? Is he a child that is dandled? For as often as I speak of him, I do earnestly remember him still; Therefore My heart yearneth for him, I will surely have compassion upon him, saith the LORD.

¹⁴ (6:15) Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they shall look unto Me because they have thrust him through; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his first-born. ¹¹ In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. ¹² And the land shall mourn, every family apart: the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; ¹³ The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of the Shimeites apart, and their wives apart; ¹⁴ All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

⁵ And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their heart, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he stretched it forth, and his hand was restored whole, as the other.

⁴³ And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off; it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁴ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off; it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁶ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out; it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire, ⁴⁸ where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

¹⁷ His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for thy house shall eat me up.

¹⁶ Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he beheld the city full of idols.

²⁰ Well, by their unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by thy faith. Be not highminded, but fear:

¹⁸ For he that in these things serveth Christ is well-pleasing to God, and approved of men.

² And ye are puffed up, and did not rather mourn, that he that had done this deed might be taken away from among you.

¹³ But them that are without God judgeth. Put away the wicked man from among yourselves.

²⁵ that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care one for another.

⁶ Sufficient to such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the many,

⁴ but in everything commending ourselves, as ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,

¹ Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

⁷ and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced yet more.

⁹ I now rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance, for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing.

² for I know your readiness, of which I glory on your behalf to them of Macedonia, that Achaia hath been prepared for a year past, and your zeal hath stirred up very many of them.

⁷ Now I pray to God that ye do no evil, not that we may appear approved, but that ye may do that which is honorable, though we be as reprobate.

²⁶ Be ye angry, and sin not; let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them,

¹² So then, my beloved, even as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

²¹ I charge thee in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality. ²² Lay hands hastily on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins; keep thyself pure.

¹⁵ Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.

⁸ Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men:

¹ Let us fear therefore, lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.

¹⁵ looking carefully lest there be any man that falleth short of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby the many be defiled, ¹⁶ lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his birthright.

¹⁷ And if ye call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to each man's work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear:

² as newborn babes, long for the spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye may grow thereby unto salvation,

²³ and some save with fear, snatching them out of a fire, hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and chasten; be zealous therefore, and repent.
