⁹ (24:10) And David said to Saul: 'Wherefore hearkenest thou to men's words, saying: Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

¹⁶ Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people; neither shalt thou stand idly by the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

¹⁹ Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it be the LORD that hath stirred thee up against me, let Him accept an offering; but if it be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day that I should not cleave unto the inheritance of the LORD, saying: Go, serve other gods.

⁵ Whoso slandereth his neighbour in secret, him will I destroy; whoso is haughty of eye and proud of heart, him will I not suffer.

⁶ Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock; and they shall hear my words, that they are sweet.

²⁸ A froward man soweth strife; and a whisperer separateth familiar friends.

⁴ A evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; and a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

⁸ The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

²³ The north wind bringeth forth rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.

²⁰ Where no wood is, the fire goeth out; and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth. ²¹ As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the body.

²⁸ A lying tongue hateth those that are crushed by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

²¹ Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee; ²² for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.
