³ Here I am; witness against me before the LORD, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.'

¹⁷ (20:14) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

⁴ (22:3) If the theft be found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep, he shall pay double.

⁸ And thou shalt take no gift; for a gift blindeth them that have sight, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

⁴ (5:23) then it shall be, if he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took by robbery, or the thing which he hath gotten by oppression, or the deposit which was deposited with him, or the lost thing which he found,

¹⁵ And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD: 'Respect not Thou their offering; I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.'

¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons; neither shalt thou take a gift; for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

¹ Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said: 'Is it not that the LORD hath anointed thee to be prince over His inheritance?

⁵ And he said unto them: 'The LORD is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand.' And they said: 'He is witness.'

⁶ (24:7) And he said unto his men: 'The LORD forbid it me, that I should do this thing unto my lord, the LORD'S anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is the LORD'S anointed.'

¹⁴ And David said unto him: 'How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?' ¹⁵ And David called one of the young men, and said: 'Go near, and fall upon him.' And he smote him that he died. ¹⁶ And David said unto him: 'Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying: I have slain the LORD'S anointed.'

¹ Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers; for there is no power but of God, and the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God; and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. ³ For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: ⁴ for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he beareth not the sword in vain; for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil. ⁵ Wherefore ye must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. ⁶ For this cause ye pay tribute also, for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing. ⁷ Render to all their dues; tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

¹⁴ Behold, this is the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you; for I seek not yours, but you; for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children.

⁵ For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness, God is witness,

¹⁰ Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and righteously and unblameably we behaved ourselves toward you that believe:

² Tend the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not of constraint, but willingly, nor yet for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind,
