¹¹ For it hath been signified unto me concerning you, my brethren, by them that are of the household of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.

⁴² And the words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah; and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him: 'Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.

² These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, being still a lad even with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives; and Joseph brought evil report of them unto their father.

¹⁴ But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying: 'Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he flew upon them. ¹⁵ But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we went with them, when we were in the fields; ¹⁶ they were a wall unto us both by night and by day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep. ¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house; for he is such a base fellow, that one cannot speak to him.'

¹⁰ By pride cometh only contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.

³ for ye are yet carnal; for whereas there is among you jealousy, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and do ye not walk after the manner of men?

¹ Dare any of you, having a matter against his neighbor, go to law before the unrighteous, and not before the saints? ² Or know ye not that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world is judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? ³ Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more, things that pertain to this life? ⁴ If then ye have to judge things pertaining to this life, do ye set them to judge who are of no account in the church? ⁵ I say this to move you to shame. What, cannot there be found among you one wise man who shall be able to decide between his brethren, ⁶ but brother goeth to law with brother, and that before unbelievers? ⁷ Nay, already it is altogether a defect in you, that ye have lawsuits one with another. Why not rather take wrong? why not rather be defrauded?

¹⁸ For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that divisions exist among you, and I partly believe it.

²⁰ For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should find you not such as I would, and should myself be found of you such as ye would not, lest by any means there should be strife, jealousy, wraths, factions, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults,

¹⁵ But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties,

²⁶ Let us not become vainglorious, provoking one another, envying one another.

¹⁴ Do all things without murmurings and questionings:

⁴ he is puffed up, knowing nothing, but doting about questionings and disputes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

²³ But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes. ²⁴ And the Lord's servant must not strive, but be gentle towards all, apt to teach, forbearing, ²⁵ in meekness correcting them that oppose themselves, if peradventure God may give them repentance unto the knowledge of the truth,

¹ Whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members? ² Ye lust, and have not; ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war, ye have not, because ye ask not.
