⁴ Howbeit the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me out of all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever; for He hath chosen Judah to be prince, and in the house of Judah, the house of my father, and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel;

⁸ Judah, thee shall thy brethren praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies; thy father's sons shall bow down before thee. ⁹ Judah is a lion's whelp; from the prey, my son, thou art gone up. He stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as a lioness; who shall rouse him up? ¹⁰ The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, as long as men come to Shiloh; and unto him shall the obedience of the peoples be.

¹ And the LORD said unto Samuel: 'How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite; for I have provided Me a king among his sons.'

⁶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he beheld Eliab, and said: 'Surely the LORD'S anointed is before Him.' ⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel: 'Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for it is not as man seeth: for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.' ⁸ Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said: 'Neither hath the LORD chosen this.' ⁹ Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said: 'Neither hath the LORD chosen this.' ¹⁰ And Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse: 'The LORD hath not chosen these.' ¹¹ And Samuel said unto Jesse: 'Are here all thy children?' And he said: 'There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep.' And Samuel said unto Jesse: 'Send and fetch him; for we will not sit down till he come hither.' ¹² And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of beautiful eyes, and goodly to look upon. And the LORD said: 'Arise, anoint him; for this is he.' ¹³ Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren; and the spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

¹ And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying: 'Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?'

⁸ Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto My servant David: Thus saith the LORD of hosts: I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over My people, over Israel. ⁹ And I have been with thee whithersoever thou didst go, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth. ¹⁰ And I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be disquieted no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first, ¹¹ even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover the LORD telleth thee that the LORD will make thee a house. ¹² When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy body, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. ¹⁴ I will be to him for a father, and he shall be to Me for a son; if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; ¹⁵ but My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. ¹⁶ And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever.'

² For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came he that is the prince; but the birthright was Joseph's -

²³ And now, O LORD, let the word that Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant, and concerning his house, be established for ever, and do as Thou hast spoken.

²⁷ and now it hath pleased Thee to bless the house of Thy servant, that it may continue for ever before Thee; for Thou, O LORD, hast blessed, and so let Thy servant be blessed for ever.'

¹⁹ (18:20) He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because He delighted in me.

⁷ (60:9) Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the defence of my head; Judah is my sceptre.

⁶⁸ But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which He loved. ⁶⁹ And He built His sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which He hath founded for ever. ⁷⁰ He chose David also His servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; ⁷¹ From following the ewes that give suck He brought him, to be shepherd over Jacob His people, and Israel His inheritance. ⁷² So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart; and lead them by the skilfulness of his hands.

¹⁶ (89:17) In Thy name do they rejoice all the day; and through Thy righteousness are they exalted. ¹⁷ (89:18) For Thou art the glory of their strength; and in Thy favour our horn is exalted. ¹⁸ (89:19) For of the LORD is our shield; and the Holy One of Israel is our king. ¹⁹ (89:20) Then Thou spokest in vision to Thy godly ones, and saidst: 'I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people. ²⁰ (89:21) I have found David My servant; with My holy oil have I anointed him; ²¹ (89:22) With whom My hand shall be established; Mine arm also shall strengthen him. ²² (89:23) The enemy shall not exact from him; nor the son of wickedness afflict him. ²³ (89:24) And I will beat to pieces his adversaries before him, and smite them that hate him. ²⁴ (89:25) But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him; and through My name shall his horn be exalted. ²⁵ (89:26) I will set his hand also on the sea, and his right hand on the rivers. ²⁶ (89:27) He shall call unto Me: Thou art my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation. ²⁷ (89:28) I also will appoint him first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth.

⁸ (108:9) Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine; Ephraim also is the defence of my head; Judah is my sceptre.

¹⁰ He delighteth not in the strength of the horse; He taketh no pleasure in the legs of a man. ¹¹ The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear Him, in those that wait for His mercy.

¹⁴ For it is evident that our Lord hath sprung out of Judah, as to which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
