¹ A Davidic Song of Ascents
Hope in the LORD LORD, my heart is not arrogant, nor do I look haughty. I do not aspire to great things, nor concern myself with things beyond my ability. ² Instead, I have composed and quieted myself like a weaned child with its mother; I am like a weaned child.

⁷ Do not be wise in your own opinion. Fear the LORD and turn away from evil.

⁵ Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their maker, and whoever is happy about disaster will not go unpunished.

⁷ All the relatives of a poor person shun him— how much more do his friends avoid him! Though he runs after them pleading, they aren’t around.

¹⁷ Whoever is kind to the poor is lending to the LORD— the benefit of his gift will return to him in abundance.

²² Human beings long for grace, and it’s better to be poor than a man of deceit.

¹² Do you see a man who is wise in his own opinion? There’s more hope for a fool than for him.

²¹ Judgment on the Arrogant“How terrible it will be for those who are wise in their own opinion, and clever in their own reckoning!

³⁹ I’ll give them one heart and one lifestyle so they’ll fear me always for their own good and for the good of their descendants after them.

⁵ Are you seeking great things for yourself? Don’t seek them. Indeed, I’m about to bring disaster on all flesh,’ declares the LORD, ‘but your life will be spared wherever you go.’”

²⁵ Stop Worrying
“That’s why I’m telling you to stop worrying about your life—what you will eat or what you will drink—or about your body—what you will wear. Life is more than food, isn’t it, and the body more than clothing? ²⁶ Look at the birds in the sky. They don’t plant or harvest or gather food into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. You are more valuable than they are, aren’t you?

⁵ the blind see, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the destitute hear the good news.

¹ True Greatness
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom from heaven?”
² Calling a little child forward, he had him stand among them. ³ Then he said, “I tell all of you with certainty, unless you change and become like little children, you will never get into the kingdom from heaven. ⁴ Therefore, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom from heaven,

²¹ He asked her, “What do you want?”
She told him, “Promise that in your kingdom these two sons of mine will sit on your right and on your left.”
²² Jesus replied, “You don’t realize what you’re asking. Can you drink from the cup that I’m going to drink from?”
They told him, “We can.”
²³ He told them, “You will indeed drink from my cup. But it’s not up to me to grant you a seat at my right hand or at my left. These positions have already been prepared for others by my Father.”
²⁴ When the ten heard this, they became furious with the two brothers. ²⁵ But Jesus called the disciples and said, “You know that the rulers of the unbelievers lord it over them and their superiors act like tyrants over them. ²⁶ That’s not the way it should be among you. Instead, whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, ²⁷ and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave. ²⁸ That’s the way it is with the Son of Man. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many people.”

¹¹ You’ll always have the destitute with you, but you’ll not always have me.

⁶ He told Jesus, “I will give you all this authority, along with their glory, because it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone I please. ⁷ So if you will worship me, all this will be yours.”
⁸ But Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’”
⁹ The devil also took him into Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. He told Jesus, “Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰ because it is written, ‘God will put his angels in charge of you to watch over you carefully. ¹¹ With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.’”

²⁰ Jesus Pronounces Blessings and Judgment
Then Jesus looked at his disciples and said, “How blessed are you who are destitute, because the kingdom of God is yours!

¹³ Instead, when you give a banquet, make it your habit to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

²⁴ An Argument about GreatnessNow an argument sprang up among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. ²⁵ But he told them, “The kings of the unbelievers lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. ²⁶ But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you should become like the youngest, and the one who leads should become like the one who serves. ²⁷ Because who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? It is the one at the table, isn’t it? But I’m among you as one who serves.

³² The Believers Share Their PossessionsNow all the believers were one in heart and soul, and nobody called any of his possessions his own. Instead, they shared everything they owned.

² Of course not! How can we who died as far as sin is concerned go on living in it?

²⁵ The Restoration of IsraelFor I want to let you know about this secret, brothers, so that you will not claim to be wiser than you are: Stubbornness has come to part of Israel until the full number of the gentiles comes to faith.

³ For by the grace given to me I ask every one of you not to think of yourself more highly than you should think, rather to think of yourself with sober judgment on the measure of faith that God has assigned each of you.

⁵ Now may God, the source of endurance and encouragement, allow you to live in harmony with each other as you follow the Messiah Jesus,

¹⁰ Divisions in the ChurchBrothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus the Messiah, I urge all of you to be in agreement and not to have divisions among you, so that you may be perfectly united in your understanding and opinions.

¹⁸ True WisdomLet no one deceive himself. If any of you thinks he is wise in the ways of this world, he must become a fool to become really wise.

¹⁰ We are fools for the Messiah’s sake, but you are wise in the Messiah. We are weak, but you are strong. You are honored, but we are dishonored.

⁵ I say this to make you feel ashamed. Has it come to this, that there is not one person among you who is wise enough to settle disagreements between brothers?

² If anyone thinks he really knows something, he has not yet learned it as he ought to know it.

¹¹ Final Greetings and BenedictionFinally, brothers, goodbye. Keep on growing to maturity. Keep listening to my appeals. Continue agreeing with each other and living in peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.

²⁷ Standing Firm in One SpiritThe only thing that matters is that you continue to live as good citizens in a manner worthy of the gospel of the Messiah. Then, whether I come to see you or whether I stay away, I may hear all about you—that you are standing firm in one spirit, struggling with one mind for the faith of the gospel,

² then fill me with joy by having the same attitude, sharing the same love, being united in spirit, and keeping one purpose in mind. ³ Do not act out of selfish ambition or conceit, but with humility think of others as being better than yourselves.

¹⁶ However, we should live up to what we have achieved so far.

² I urge Euodia and Syntyche to have the same attitude in the Lord.

¹¹ I am not saying this because I am in any need, for I have learned to be content in whatever situation I am in. ¹² I know how to be humble, and I know how to prosper. In each and every situation I have learned the secret of being full and of going hungry, of having too much and of having too little. ¹³ I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

⁶ Of course, godliness with contentment does bring a great profit. ⁷ Nothing to this world we bring; from it take we nothing. ⁸ With food to eat and clothes to wear; content we are in everything.
⁹ But people who want to get rich keep toppling into temptation and are trapped by many stupid and harmful desires that plunge them into destruction and ruin.

⁵ Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for God has said, “I will never leave you or abandon you.”

⁵ Listen, my dear brothers! God has chosen the poor in the world to become rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who keep on loving him, has he not? ⁶ But you have humiliated the man who is poor. Are not rich people the ones who oppress you and drag you into court?

¹³ Live WiselyWho among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his noble conduct that his actions are done humbly and wisely. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and rivalry in your hearts, stop boasting and slandering the truth. ¹⁵ That kind of wisdom does not come from above. No, it is worldly, self-centered, and demonic. ¹⁶ For wherever jealousy and rivalry exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil.
¹⁷ However, the wisdom that comes from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, willing to yield, full of compassion and good deeds, and without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.

⁸ When You are WrongedFinally, all of you must live in harmony, be sympathetic, love as brothers, and be compassionate and humble.

³ Do not lord it over the people entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock.

⁹ Criticism of DiotrephesI wrote a letter to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be in charge, will not recognize our authority.

⁷ It was allowed to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. It was also given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. ⁸ All those who had become settled down and at home, living on the earth, will worship it, everyone whose name had not been written in the Book of Life belonging to the lamb that had been slaughtered since the foundation of the world.
