⁴ the mountains skipped like rams, and the hills like lambs.

¹⁸ Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the LORD had come down in fire on it. Smoke went up from it like smoke from a kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently.

¹⁸ The People are Terrified in God’s PresenceAll the people experienced the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the smoking mountain. And as the people experienced it, they trembled and stood at a distance.

⁴ LORD, when you left Seir, when you marched out from the grain field of Edom, the earth quaked and the heavens poured out rain; indeed, the clouds poured out water. ⁵ Mountains tremble at the presence of the LORD — even Sinai!—at the presence of the LORD God of Israel.

⁷ The world shook and trembled; the foundations of the mountains quaked, they shook because he was angry.

⁶ He makes them stagger like a calf, even Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox.

⁶ In fact, people walk around as shadows. Surely, they busy themselves for nothing, heaping up possessions but not knowing who will get them.

¹⁶ You mountains of many peaks, why do you watch with envy the mountain in which God has chosen to dwell? Indeed, the LORD will live there forever.

²³ A Vision of ChaosI looked at the earth, and it was formless and void, at the heavens, and there was no light there. ²⁴ I looked at the mountains; they were quaking, and all the hills moved back and forth.

³ Look here! The LORD is coming from his place! He will come down and will trample down the high places throughout the land. ⁴ The mountains will melt under him and the valleys will split apart, like wax in the presence of fire and like water gushing down a steep incline. ⁵ Mountains shake because of him, and the hills melt. The earth goes into upheaval at his presence, as does the world with all of its inhabitants.

⁶ He stood up and shook the land; with his stare he startled the nations. The age-old mountains were shattered, and the ancient hilltops bowed down. His ways are eternal.

⁸ Was the LORD displeased with the rivers? Was your anger directed against the watercourses or your wrath against the sea? Indeed, you rode upon your horses, upon your chariots of deliverance.

⁷ Now by that same word, the present heavens and earth have been reserved for fire and are being kept for the day when ungodly people will be judged and destroyed.
⁸ Don’t forget this fact, dear friends: With the Lord a single day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a single day. ⁹ The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some people understand slowness, but is being patient with you. He does not want anyone to perish, but wants everyone to repent. ¹⁰ But the Day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that day the heavens will disappear with a roaring sound, the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done on it will be exposed.
¹¹ Since everything will be destroyed in this way, think of the kind of holy and godly people you ought to be
