¹⁰ Then many people will fall away, will betray one another, and will hate one another.

⁵ Don’t trust your friends, don’t confide in a companion, watch what you say to your wife. ⁶ The son disrespects his father, the daughter rebels against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, and a man’s enemies are the people of his own house.

²¹ “Brother will hand brother over for execution, and a father his child. Children will rebel against parents and have them put to death.

³⁵ I came to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. ³⁶ A person’s enemies will include members of his own family.’

⁶ How blessed is anyone who is not offended by me!”

²¹ but since he doesn’t have any root in himself, he lasts for only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes along because of the word, he immediately falls away.

⁵⁷ And they were offended by him.
But Jesus told them, “A prophet is without honor only in his hometown and in his own home.”

²¹ While they were eating, he said, “I tell all of you with certainty, one of you is going to betray me.”
²² Feeling deeply distressed, each one began to ask him, “Surely I am not the one, Lord?”
²³ He replied, “The man who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. ²⁴ The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him. How terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born.”

³¹ Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
Then Jesus told them, “All of you will turn against me this very night, because it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
³² However, after I have been raised, I will go to Galilee ahead of you.”
³³ But Peter told him, “Even if everyone else turns against you, I certainly won’t!”
³⁴ Jesus told him, “I tell you with certainty, before a rooster crows this very night, you will deny me three times.”

¹⁷ but since they don’t have any roots, they last for only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes along because of the word, they immediately fall away.

⁶⁰ The Words of Eternal LifeWhen many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This is a difficult statement. Who can accept it?”
⁶¹ But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, asked them, “Does this offend you?

⁶⁶ As a result, many of his disciples turned back and no longer associated with him.
⁶⁷ So Jesus asked the Twelve, “You don’t want to leave, too, do you?”
