² If the guilty person deserves a beating, the judge will make him lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of lashes fit for his crime.

¹⁷ Watch out for people who will hand you over to the local councils and whip you in their synagogues.

²⁶ Then he released Barabbas for them, but he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.

⁴⁷ That servant who knew what his master wanted but didn’t prepare himself or do what was wanted will receive a severe beating. ⁴⁸ But the servant who did things that deserved a beating without knowing it will receive a light beating. Then the magistrates had Paul and Silas stripped of their clothes and ordered them beaten with rods. ²³ After giving them a severe beating, they threw them in jail and ordered the jailer to keep them under tight security. ²⁴ Having received these orders, he put them into the inner cell and fastened their feet in leg irons.

²⁰ What good does it do if, when you sin, you patiently receive punishment for it? But if you suffer for doing good and receive it patiently, you have God’s approval.
