44 Then Pilate marvelled that he should be already dead: and calling for the centurion, he asked him, If he had been dead any time.

John 19:31-37

31 The Jews therefore, as it was the preparation, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, (for that sabbath-day was a great day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, as they saw that he was already dead, they brake not his legs: 34 but one of the soldiers with his lance pierced his side, and immediately there gushed out blood and water. 35 And he that saw it bore witness, and we know that his testimony is true: and he himself is conscious that he speaketh what is true, that ye might believe. 36 Now these things were done, that the scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him shall not be broken." 37 And again another scripture saith, "They shall look on him whom they have pierced."
