¹⁸ knowing that ye have not been redeemed out of your vain manner of life, derived traditionally from your fathers, by the corruptible things, silver and gold,

² Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread? ³ And he answering said to them, And why do you transgress the command of God, by your tradition?

⁵¹ Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears, ye do always oppose yourselves against the Holy Ghost: as your fathers, so are ye. ⁵² Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they killed those who before published the tidings of the coming of that Righteous Person; of whom ye have now been the betrayers and murderers:

³⁴ But when they knew he was a Jew, one shout burst from all, crying for about the space of two hours, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. ³⁵ Then the recorder having quieted the multitude, said, Men of Ephesus, who indeed is the man that doth not know that the city of the Ephesians is wholly devoted to the great goddess Diana, and to the image which fell down from Jupiter?

²¹ because though they knew [there was] a God, they glorified him not as God, nor gave him thanks, but became triflers in their disputations, and their stupid heart was darkened.

²⁰ And again, "The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise, that they are futile."

²⁰ For ye have been bought with a price: glorify then God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

²³ Have you been redeemed with a price? become not the slaves of men.

⁴ who gave himself for our sins, that he might pluck us out of this present wicked world, according to the will of God and our Father:

¹⁷ This then I urge and testify in the Lord, that ye walk no more as the other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind,

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify to himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

⁷ that the test of your faith (much more precious than that of gold, which is of a perishing nature, though proved by fire) may be found unto praise and honour and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

³ For the time past of life is enough for us to have wrought the will of the heathen, when we walked in all impurities, lewd appetites, excess of wine, revels, drinking-bouts, and abominable idolatries;
