For the feruent prayer of a ryghteous man auayleth moch. 17 Helyas was a man vnder infirmitees euen as we are, and he prayed in his prayer that it myght not rayne: and it rayned not on the earthe by the space of thre yeares & syxe monethes. 18 And he prayed agayne, and the heauen gaue rayne, and the earth brought forth her frute.

1 In those dayes came Iohn the Baptist, preachyng in the wyldernesse of Iewry, 2 and sayeng: Repent of the life that is past, for the kingdome of heauen is at hand. 3 For this is he, of whom the Prophete Esaye spake, which sayeth: The voyce of a cryer in the wyldernes, prepare ye the waye of the Lorde: & make hys pathes streyght. 4 Thys Iohn had hys rayment of camels heer. And a gyrdell of a skynne about hys loynes. His meat was locustes and wylde hony. 5 Then went out to hym Ierusalem and all Iewrye, and all the regyon rounde about Iordan, 6 and were baptysed of hym in Iordan, confessyng their synnes. 7 But when he sawe many of the Pharises and Saduces come to hys baptyme, he sayd vnto them: O generacion of vypers, who hath taught you to fle from the vengeaunce to come? 8 Bring forth therfore the frutes that belong to repentaunce. 9 And be not of soch mynde that ye wolde saye wtin your selues: we haue Abraham to oure father. For I saye vnto you: that God is able to bryng to passe, that of these stones ther shall ryse vp children vnto Abraham. 10 Euen now is the axe also put vnto the rote of the trees: so that euery tree which bringeth not forth good frute, is hewen downe, and cast into the fyre. 11 I baptyse you in water vnto repentaunce: but he that shall come after me is myghtyer then I, whose shoes I am not worthy to beare. He shall baptise you with the holy ghost and with fyre: 12 whose fan is in hys hand, & he wyll purge hys floore, & gather his wheat into the barne, but wyll burne the chaffe wt vnquencheable fyre. 13 Then commeth Iesus from Galile to Iordan vnto Iohn to be baptysed of hym. 14 But Iohn forbade hym, sayinge: I haue nede to be baptised of the: and commest thou to me? 15 Iesus answered & said vnto him: Let it be so now. For thus it becometh vs to fulfyll all ryghteousnesse. Then he suffred hym. 16 And Iesus when he was baptised, came straight waye out of the water. And lo heuen was open vnto him: and he sawe the sprete of God descendynge lyke a doue, and lyghtyng vpon hym. 17 And loo, there came a voyce from heauen saienge. Thys is my beloued sonne, in whom I am well pleased.

1 The begynnynge of the Gospell of Iesu Chryst the sonne of God, 2 as it is written in the Prophetes, behold, I sende my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy waye before the. 3 The voyce of a cryer in the wildernes: prepare ye the waye of the Lorde, & make his pathes strayte. 4 Iohn dyd baptyse in the wyldernes, and preached the baptyme of repentaunce, for the remissyon of synnes. 5 And all the lande of Iewrie and they of Ierusalem, went out vnto hym, and were all baptised of him in the ryuer Iordan, confessynge their synnes. 6 Iohn was clothed with camilles herr, and wt a gerdyll of a sayng about hys loynes. And he dyd eate locustes and wilde hony, 7 and preached sayinge. He that is stronger then I, commeth after me, whose sho latchet I am not worthy to stoupe downe, and vnlose, 8 I haue baptysed you wyth water: but he shall baptyse you with the holy gost. 9 And it came to passe in those dayes, that Iesus cam from Nazareth, of Galile: and was baptysed of Iohn in Iordan: 10 And assone as he was come vp out of the water: he sawe heauen open, & the sprete descendynge vpon him lyke adoue: 11 And ther came a voyce from heauen. Thou art my deare sonne in whom I delyte.

Luke 3:1-20

1 In the fyfteneth yere of the raygne of Tyberius the Emperoure, Pontius Pylate beynge leftenaunt of Iewrie, and Herode beinge Tetrach of Galile, and his brother Philip Tetrach of Iturea & of the region of the Traconites, & Lysaniath the Tetrach of Abyline 2 (when Anna and Cayphas were the hye prestes) the worde of the Lorde came vnto Iohn the sonne of Zacharias in the wyldernes. 3 And he came in to all the coastes aboute Iordan, preaching the baptyme of repentaunce for the remission of synnes, 4 as it is wrytten in the boke of the wordes of Esayas the prophet, sayenge: The voyce of a cryar in wyldernes: prepare ye the waye of the Lord, make his pathes strayght. 5 Euery valley shalbe fylled, & euery mountayne & hyll shalbe brought lowe. And thinges that be croked, shalbe made streyght: & the rough wayes shalbe made playne: 6 & all flesshe shall se the Saluacion of God. 7 Then sayde he to the people, that were come forth to be baptysed of him. O ye generacion of vypers, who hath taught you to flye from the wrath to come? 8 Brynge forth therfore due frutes of repentaunce, & begyn not to saye wyth in youre selues: we haue Abraham to oure father. For I saye vnto you. God is able of these stones to reyse vp chyldren vnto Abraham. 9 Now also is the axe leyde vnto the rote of the trees: euery tree therfore which bryngeth not forth good frute, is hewen doune, & cast into the fyre. 10 And the people asked him, sayinge: what shall we do then? 11 He answereth and sayeth, vnto them: He that hath two coates? lett him parte wyth hym that hath none, & he that hath meate, let him do lyke wyse. 12 Then cam the publicans also to be baptised, & sayde vnto him: Master, what shal we do? 13 And he sayde vnto them: requyre no more, then that which is appoynted vnto you. 14 The soudyoures lykewyse demaunded of him, sayinge: and what shall we do? And he sayde vnto them: hurt no man: nether trouble eny man wrongfully: and be content with youre wages. 15 As the people were in a doute, and all men musyd in their hertes of Iohn, whether he were very Christ, 16 Iohn answered & sayde vn them all: I baptise you wyth water, but one stronger then I shall come after me, whose shoo latchet I am not worthy to vnlowse: he shall baptyse you with the holy goost, & wt fyre: 17 which hath hys fanne in hys hande, & wyll pourge his floore, and gather the corne into his barne: but the chaffe wyll he burne with fyre that neuer shalbe quenched. 18 And many other thinges in his exhortacion preached he vnto the people. 19 Then Herode the Tetrach when he was rebuked of hym for Herodias his brother Philippes wyfe, & for all the euyls which Herode dyd: 20 added this aboue all, and layed Iohn in preson.

John 1:6-8

6 There was sent from God a man, whose name was Iohn. 7 The same cam as a wytnes to beare wytnes of the lyght, that all men through hym myght beleue. 8 He was not the lyght: but was sent to beare wytnes of the lyght.

John 1:15-36

15 Iohn beareth wytnes of hym, and cryeth sayinge: Thys was he of whom I spake: which though he came after me, went before me, for he was before me. 16 And of hys fulnes haue all we receaued, euen grace for grace. 17 For the lawe was geuen by Moses, but grace & trueth came by Iesus Christ. 18 No man hath sene God at eny tyme. The onely begotten sonne, whych is in the bosome of the father, he hath declared hym. 19 And thys is the recorde of Iohn: when the Iewes sent Prestes and Leuites from Ierusalem, to aske hym, what art thou? 20 And he confessed & denyed not, & sayde playnly. I am not Chryst. 21 And they asked him: what then? art thou Helyas? And he sayeth: I am not. Arte thou that Prophete? And he answered no. 22 Then sayde they vnto hym: what art thou, that we maye geue an answer to them that sent vs. What sayest thou of thy selfe? 23 He sayde I am the voyce of a criar in the wildernes, make strayght the waye of the Lorde, as sayde the Prophete Esaias. 24 And they whych were sent, were of the Pharyses: 25 And they asked him, & sayde vnto him: why baptisest thou then, yf thou be not Christ, nor Helias, nether that Prophet? 26 Iohn answered them sayinge I baptise with water: but there stondeth one amonge you, whom ye knowe not, 27 he it is which though he came after me, was before me, whose sho latchet I am not worthy to vnlose. 28 These thynges were done in Bethabara beyonde Iordan where Iohn dyd baptise. 29 The nexte daye, Iohn seeth Iesus comminge vnto hym, and sayeth beholde the lambe of God, whych taketh awaye the synne of the worlde. 30 Thys is he of whom I sayd: After me cometh a man, whych went before me, for he was before me, 31 and I knewe him not: but that he shuld be declared to Israell, therfore am I come baptysinge with water. 32 And Iohn bare recorde, sayinge: I sawe the sprete descende from heauen, lyke vnto a doue, & abode vpon him, 33 and I knewe hym not. But he that sent me to baptise in water, the same sayde vnto me: vpon whom thou shalt se the sprete descende, and tary styll on hym, the same is he whych baptiseth wyth the holy goost. 34 And I sawe, and bare recorde, that he is the sonne of God. 35 The nexte daye after, Iohn stode agayne, & two of his disciples, 36 and he behelde Iesus as he walked by, & sayeth: beholde the lambe of God.

John 3:25-36

25 And ther arose a question betwene Iohns disciples and the Iewes, aboute purifyinge. 26 And they came vnto Iohn, & sayde vnto him: Rabbi, he that was wyth the beyonde Iordan (to whom thou barest wytnes) beholde the same baptiseth & all men come to hym. 27 Iohn answered, & sayde: a man can receaue nothinge, except it be geuen him from heauen. 28 Ye youre selues are witnesses how that I sayd: I am not Christ, but am sent before him: 29 He that hath the bryde, is the brydegrome. But the frende of the brydegrome, whych standeth and heareth hym, reioyseth greatly because of the brydegromes voyce. This my ioye therfore is fulfilled. 30 He must increace: but I must decreace. 31 He that commeth from an hye, is aboue all: He that is of the erth, is earthly, and speaketh of the erth. He that commeth from heauen, is aboue all, 32 & what he hath sene and hearde: that he testifieth: and no man receaueth hys testimonye. 33 He that hath receaued hys testimonie hath set to hys seale, that God is true. 34 For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the wordes of God: For God geueth not the sprete by measure vnto him. 35 The father loueth the sonne & hath geuen all thynges into hys hande 36 He that beleueth on the sonne hath euerlastinge lyfe: He that beleueth not the sonne, shall not se lyfe, but the wrath of God abydeth on him.

A prophete: Uerely I saye vnto you: and more then a Prophete. 10 For this is he, of whom it is wrytten. Beholde, I sende my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy waye before the. 11 Uerely I saye vnto you: amonge them that are borne of wemen, arose not a greater then Iohn the Baptist. Not withstandinge he that is lesse: in the Kyngdome of heauen is gretter then he. 12 From the dayes of Iohn Baptist vntill this daye, the kyngedom of heuen suffreth violence, and the violent plucke it vnto them. 13 For all the prophetes, and the lawe it selfe prophesied vnto Iohn. 14 And yf ye wyll receaue it this is Helias, which was for to come.

31 Whether of them twayne dyd the wyll of the father? And they saye vnto him: the fyrst. Iesus sayeth vnto them: verely I saye vnto you, the publicans & harlotes go into the kyngdom of God before you. 32 For Iohn cam vnto you by the waye of ryghtewesnes, and ye beleued hym not: but publicans & harlottes beleued hym. And ye (whan ye had sene it) were not moued afterwarde wyth repentaunce, that ye myght haue beleued hym.

And he sayth: I cannot, for it is sealed. 12 And the boke is geuen vnto him that is not learned, saying: Reade thou in it, and he sayth: I am not learned. 13 Therfore thus hath the Lorde sayde: For somoche as this people when they be in trouble, do honour me with their mouth & wt their lippes: but their hert is far fro me, & the feare which they haue vnto me, proceadeth of a commaundment that is taught of men. 14 Therfore wyll I do maruayls amonge this people, euen maruelous thinges (I saye) & a wonder.
