²² Is it right for us to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?"

²⁵ He said, "Yes." But when he went home, Jesus spoke of it first and said, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect duties and taxes? From their own people, or from aliens?"

¹⁷ So give us your opinion: Is it right to pay the poll-tax to the emperor, or not?" ¹⁸ But he saw their malice, and said, ¹⁹ "Why do you put me to such a test, you hypocrites? Show me the poll-tax coin!" And they brought him a denarius. ²⁰ And he said to them, "Whose head and title is this?" ²¹ They answered, "The emperor's." Then he said to them, "Then pay the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and pay God what belongs to God!"

¹⁴ And they came up and said to him, "Master, we know that you tell the truth regardless of the consequences, for you are not guided by personal considerations, but teach the way of God with sincerity. Is it right to pay the poll tax to the emperor or not? ¹⁵ Should we pay it, or refuse to pay it?" But he saw through their pretense, and said to them, "Why do you put me to such a test? ³⁷ After him, at the time of the census, Judas of Galilee appeared, and raised a great following, but he too perished, and all his followers were scattered.
