³⁵ He was a bright and shining light: and you were willing to rejoice for an hour in that light.

⁵ Then Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the region about the Jordan, were coming out to him, ⁶ and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. ⁷ And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said unto them; O generations of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁷ And they departing, Jesus began to speak to the multitudes concerning John, What went you out in the wilderness to see? a reed shaken by the wind? ⁸ But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold those wearing soft raiment are in the houses of the kings. ⁹ But what went you out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet:

¹¹ Truly I say unto you, Among those having been born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist: nevertheless the least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.

²⁰ But the one sown upon the rocks, is he who heareth the word, and immediately with joy receives it; ²¹ but it has no root in him, but is temporary; and tribulation or persecution arising on account of the word, immediately he is offended.

²⁶ But if we may say, From men: we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet.

²⁰ for Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a just and holy man, and he continued to hold him in prison: and hearing him, he continued to do many things, and he was hearing him gladly.

¹⁵ For he shall be great before the Lord; and he shall not drink wine and strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost even from the womb of his mother. ¹⁶ And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord, their God. ¹⁷ And he will go before Him in the spirit and Power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient unto the understanding of the righteous, to prepare a people made ready for the Lord.

⁷⁶ And thou, little child, shall be called a prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, ⁷⁷ to give knowledge of salvation to His people in remission of their sins,

²⁸ I say unto you, among those having been born of women no prophet is greater than John the Baptist; nevertheless the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

⁷ The same came for a witness, that he might bear witness concerning the light, in order that all through him might believe. ⁸ He was not the light, but came that he might bear witness concerning the light.

⁶⁶ Moreover from this many of His disciples went back, and walked with Him no more.

¹⁵ Where then is your happiness? for I testify to you that, if possible, having plucked out your eyes, you would have given them to me. ¹⁶ Therefore have I become your enemy, telling you the truth?

¹⁹ And we have the more certain word of prophecy; to which you do well giving heed, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day may dawn, and the morning-star may rise in your hearts:
