⁵⁸ While thou goest with thine aduersarie to the ruler, as thou art in the way, giue diligence in the way, that thou mayest be deliuered from him, least he drawe thee to the iudge, and the iudge deliuer thee to the iayler, and the iayler cast thee into prison.

³ Then Iaakob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother, vnto the land of Seir into the countrey of Edom: ⁴ To whom he gaue commandement, saying, Thus shall ye speake to my lorde Esau: thy seruant Iaakob sayeth thus, I haue bene a stranger with Laban, and taried vnto this time. ⁵ I haue beeues also and Asses, sheepe, and men seruantes, and women seruantes, and haue sent to shew my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight. ⁶ So ye messengers came againe to Iaakob, saying, We came vnto thy brother Esau, and hee also commeth against thee and foure hundreth men with him. ⁷ Then Iaakob was greatly afraid, and was sore troubled, and deuided the people that was with him, and the sheepe, and the beeues, and the camels into two companies. ⁸ For he said, If Esau come to ye one company and smite it, the other companie shall escape. ⁹ Moreouer Iaakob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Izhak: Lord, which saydest vnto me, Returne vnto thy coutrey and to thy kinred, and I will do thee good, ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and al the trueth, which thou hast shewed vnto thy seruant: for with my staffe came I ouer this Iorden, and now haue I gotte two bads. ¹¹ I pray thee, Deliuer me from the hande of my brother, from the hande of Esau: for I feare him, least he will come and smite me, and the mother vpon the children. ¹² For thou saydest; I will surely doe thee good, and make thy seede as the sande of the sea, which can not be nombred for multitude. ¹³ And he taryed there the same night, and tooke of that which came to had, a present for Esau his brother: ¹⁴ Two hundreth shee goates and twenty hee goates, two hundreth ewes and twentie rammes: ¹⁵ Thirtie mylche camels with their coltes, fourtie kine, and ten bullockes, twentie she asses and ten foles. ¹⁶ So he deliuered them into the hande of his seruants, euery droue by themselues, and saide vnto his seruants, Passe before me, and put a space betweene droue and droue. ¹⁷ And he commanded the formost, saying, If Esau my brother meete thee, and aske thee, saying, Whose seruant art thou? And whither goest thou? ¹⁸ Then Abigail made haste, and tooke two hundreth cakes, and two bottels of wine, and fiue sheepe ready dressed, and fiue measures of parched corne, and an hundreth frailes of raisins, and two hundreth of figs, and laded them on asses. ¹⁹ Then she said vnto her seruants, Go ye before me: beholde, I will come after you: yet she tolde not her husband Nabal. ²⁰ And as shee rode on her asse, shee came downe by a secret place of the mountaine, and beholde, Dauid and his men came downe against her, and she met them. ²¹ And Dauid said, In deede I haue kept all in vaine that this fellow had in the wildernesse, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained vnto him: for he hath requited me euill for good. ²² So and more also doe God vnto the enemies of Dauid: for surely I will not leaue of all that he hath, by the dawning of the day, any that pisseth against the wall. ²³ And when Abigail sawe Dauid, she hasted and lighted off her asse, and fell before Dauid on her face, and bowed her selfe to the ground, ²⁴ And fel at his feete, and sayd, Oh, my lord, I haue committed the iniquitie, and I pray thee, let thine handmayde speake to thee, and heare thou the wordes of thine handmayde. ²⁵ Let not my lorde, I pray thee, regard this wicked man Nabal: for as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and follie is with him: but I thine handmayde sawe not the yong men of my lord whom thou sentest. ²⁶ Now therefore my lord, as the Lord liueth, and as thy soule liueth (the Lord, I say, that hath withholden thee from comming to shedde blood, and that thine hand should not saue thee) so now thine enemies shall be as Nabal, and they that intend to doe my lord euill. ²⁷ And now, this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought vnto my lorde, let it be giuen vnto the yong men, that follow my lord. ²⁸ I pray thee, forgiue the trespasse of thine handmaide: for the Lord will make my lorde a sure house, because my lord fighteth the battels of the Lord, and none euill hath bene found in thee in all thy life. ²⁹ Yet a man hath risen vp to persecute thee, and to seeke thy soule, but the soule of my lorde shall be bounde in the bundel of life with the Lord thy God: and the soule of thine enemies shall God cast out, as out of the middle of a sling. ³⁰ And when the Lord shall haue done to my lord al the good that he hath promised thee, and shall haue made thee ruler ouer Israel, ³¹ Then shall it be no griefe vnto thee, nor offence of minde vnto my lord, that he hath not shed blood causelesse, nor that my lorde hath not preserued him selfe: and when the Lord shall haue dealt well with my lorde, remember thine handmaide. ³² Then Dauid said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meete me. ³³ And blessed be thy counsel, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from comming to shed blood, and that mine hand hath not saued me. ³⁴ For in deede, as the Lord God of Israel liueth, who hath kept me backe from hurting thee, except thou haddest hasted and met mee, surely there had not bene left vnto Nabal by the dawning of the day, any that pisseth against the wall. ³⁵ Then Dauid receiued of her hande that which she had brought him, and said to her, Goe vp in peace to thine house: beholde, I haue heard thy voyce, and haue graunted thy petition.

²¹ Therefore acquaint thy selfe, I pray thee, with him, and make peace: thereby thou shalt haue prosperitie.

⁷ There the righteous might reason with him, so I shoulde be deliuered for euer from my Iudge.

¹⁷ But thou art ful of the iudgement of the wicked, though iudgement and equitie maintaine all things. ¹⁸ For Gods wrath is, least hee should take that away in thine abundance: for no multitude of giftes can deliuer thee.

⁶ Therefore shall euery one, that is godly, make his prayer vnto thee in a time, when thou mayest be founde: surely in the flood of great waters they shall not come neere him.

²² Oh cosider this, ye that forget God, least I teare you in pieces, and there be none that can deliuer you.

¹ My sonne, if thou be surety for thy neighbour, and hast striken hands with the stranger, ² Thou art snared with the wordes of thy mouth: thou art euen taken with the woordes of thine owne mouth. ³ Doe this nowe, my sonne, and deliuer thy selfe: seeing thou art come into the hande of thy neighbour, goe, and humble thy selfe, and sollicite thy friends. ⁴ Giue no sleepe to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. ⁵ Deliuer thy selfe as a doe from the hande of the hunter, and as a birde from the hande of the fouler.

⁸ Goe not foorth hastily to strife, least thou know not what to doe in the ende thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame. ⁹ Debate thy matter with thy neighbour, and discouer not the secret to another,

⁶ Seeke ye the Lord while he may be found: call ye vpon him while he is neere.

²³ If then thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there remembrest that thy brother hath ought against thee, ²⁴ Leaue there thine offring before the altar, and goe thy way: first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. ²⁵ Agree with thine aduersarie quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him, lest thine aduersarie deliuer thee to the Iudge, and the Iudge deliuer thee to ye sergeant, and thou be cast into prison. ²⁶ Verely I say vnto thee, thou shalt not come out thence, till thou hast payed the vtmost farthing.

³⁰ Yet he would not, but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the dette.

²⁴ Striue to enter in at the straite gate: for many, I say vnto you, will seeke to enter in, and shall not be able. ²⁵ When the good man of the house is risen vp, and hath shut to the doore, and ye begin to stand without, and to knocke at the doore, saying, Lord, Lord, open to vs, and he shall answere and say vnto you, I know you not whence ye are, ²⁶ Then shall ye begin to say, We haue eaten and drunke in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streetes. ²⁷ But he shall say, I tell you, I knowe you not whence ye are: depart from me, all ye workers of iniquitie. ²⁸ There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth when ye shall see Abraham and Isaac, and Iacob, and all the Prophets in the kingdome of God, and your selues thrust out at doores.

³¹ Or what King going to make warre against another King, sitteth not downe first, and taketh counsell, whether he be able with ten thousande, to meete him that commeth against him with twentie thousand? ³² Or els while hee is yet a great way off, hee sendeth an ambassage, and desireth peace.

² For he sayth, I haue heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of saluation haue I succoured thee: beholde nowe the accepted time, beholde nowe the day of saluation.

⁷ Wherefore, as the holy Ghost sayth, To day if ye shall heare his voyce, ⁸ Harden not your hearts, as in the prouocation, according to the day of the tentation in the wildernes, ⁹ Where your fathers tempted me, prooued me, and sawe my workes fourtie yeeres long. ¹⁰ Wherefore I was grieued with that generation, and sayde, They erre euer in their heart, neither haue they knowen my wayes. ¹¹ Therefore I sware in my wrath, If they shall enter into my rest. ¹² Take heede, brethren, least at any time there be in any of you an euill heart, and vnfaithfull, to depart away from the liuing God. ¹³ But exhort one another dayly, while it is called to day, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulnes of sinne.

¹⁹ By the which hee also went, and preached vnto the spirits that are in prison.

⁷ And when the thousand yeres are expired, Satan shalbe loosed out of his prison,
