¹ My son, if thou art become surety for thy neighbour, if thou hast stricken thy hands for a stranger, ² Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. ³ Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, seeing thou art come into the hand of thy neighbour; go, humble thyself, and importune thy neighbour. ⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. ⁵ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler. ⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a robber, and thy want as an armed man. ¹² A worthless person, a man of iniquity; he walketh with a froward mouth; ¹³ He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he maketh signs with his fingers; ¹⁴ Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth evil continually; he soweth discord. ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; on a sudden shall he be broken and that without remedy. ¹⁶ There be six things which the LORD hateth; yea, seven which are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood; ¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief; ¹⁹ A false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. ²⁰ My son, keep the commandment of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ²¹ Bind them continually upon thine heart, tie them about thy neck. ²² When thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall watch over thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. ²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life: ²⁴ To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the stranger’s tongue. ²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids. ²⁶ For on account of a whorish woman [a man is brought] to a piece of bread: and the adulteress hunteth for the precious life. ²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? ²⁸ Or can one walk upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? ²⁹ So he that goeth in to his nieghbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry: ³¹ But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. ³² He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he doeth it that would destroy his own soul. ³³ Wounds and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away. ³⁴ For jealousy is the rage of a man; and he will not spare in the day of vengeance. ³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.

⁹ I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

³² For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then shall I bear the blame to my father for ever. ³³ Now therefore, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.

³ Give now a pledge, be surety for me with thyself; who is there that will strike hands with me?

¹⁵ He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: but he that hateth suretiship is sure.

¹⁸ A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his neighbour.

¹⁶ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for strangers.

²⁶ Be thou not one of them that strike hands, [or] of them that are sureties for debts:

¹³ Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; and hold him in pledge [that is surety] for a strange woman.

¹⁸ But if he hath wronged thee at all, or oweth [thee] aught, put that to mine account; ¹⁹ I Paul write it with mine own hand, I will repay it: that I say not unto thee how that thou owest to me even thine own self besides.

²² by so much also hath Jesus become the surety of a better covenant.

¹³ In the transgression of the lips is a snare to the evil man: but the righteous shall come out of trouble.

⁷ A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

³ And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me.

¹⁴ And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

⁵ Now Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have forsaken me, therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.

¹² and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God; he humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet [speaking] from the mouth of the LORD.

⁸ And thou hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy; thou hast set my feet in a large place.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

⁴ I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids;

¹⁰ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a robber, and thy want as an armed man.

¹⁰ Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do [it] with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

¹⁷ let him that is on the housetop not go down to take out the things that are in his house: ¹⁸ and let him that is in the field not return back to take his cloke.

³⁵ Watch therefore: for ye know not when the lord of the house cometh, whether at even, or at midnight, or at cockcrowing, or in the morning; ³⁶ lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

¹ For the Chief Musician. [A Psalm] of David. In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

³ For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

⁷ Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.

¹⁷ For in vain is the net spread, in the eyes of any bird:

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.

⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?

²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

¹⁹ The way of the sluggard is as an hedge of thorns: but the path of the upright is made an highway.

⁹ He also that is slack in his work is brother to him that is a destroyer.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and the idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The slothful will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

²⁵ The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion without: I shall be murdered in the streets.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well: I saw, and received instruction. ³³ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a robber; and thy want as an armed man.

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. ¹⁴ [As] the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the sluggard upon his bed. ¹⁵ The sluggard burieth his hand in the dish; it wearieth him to bring it again to his mouth. ¹⁶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason.

²⁵ The ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their meat in the summer;

³ The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: [but] Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

²⁶ Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value than they?

²⁶ But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter;

¹¹ in diligence not slothful; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

¹² that ye be not sluggish, but imitators of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

²⁶ Doth the hawk soar by thy wisdom, [and] stretch her wings toward the south? ²⁷ Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high? ²⁸ She dwelleth on the rock, and hath her lodging [there], upon the crag of the rock, and the strong hold. ²⁹ From thence she spieth out the prey; her eyes behold it afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

⁴ Will he make a covenant with thee, that thou shouldest take him for a servant for ever? ⁵ Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? ⁶ Shall the bands [of fishermen] make traffic of him? shall they part him among the merchants? ⁷ Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons, or his head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay thine hand upon him; remember the battle, and do so no more. ⁹ Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? ¹⁰ None is so fierce that he dare stir him up: who then is he that can stand before me? ¹¹ Who hath first given unto me, that I should repay him? [whatsoever is] under the whole heaven is mine. ¹² I will not keep silence concerning his limbs, nor his mighty strength, nor his comely proportion. ¹³ Who can strip off his outer garment? who shall come within his double bridle? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of his face? round about his teeth is terror. ¹⁵ His strong scales are [his] pride, shut up together [as with] a close seal. ¹⁶ One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined one to another; they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. ¹⁸ His neesings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. ¹⁹ Out of his mouth go burning torches, and sparks of fire leap forth. ²⁰ Out of his nostrils a smoke goeth, as of a seething pot and [burning] rushes. ²¹ His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth forth from his mouth. ²² In his neck abideth strength, and terror danceth before him. ²³ The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm upon him; they cannot be moved. ²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, firm as the nether millstone. ²⁵ When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid: by reason of consternation they are beside themselves. ²⁶ If one lay at him with the sword, it cannot avail; nor the spear, the dart, nor the pointed shaft. ²⁷ He counteth iron as straw, [and] brass as rotten wood. ²⁸ The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. ²⁹ Clubs are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the rushing of the javelin. ³⁰ His underparts are [like] sharp potsherds: he spreadeth [as it were] a threshing wain upon the mire. ³¹ He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like ointment. ³² He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. ³³ Upon earth there is not his like, that is made without fear. ³⁴ He beholdeth every thing that is high: he is king over all the sons of pride.

²⁷ The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;

⁵ He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: [but] he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

¹⁹ laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on the life which is [life] indeed.

⁸ Consider, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thine heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thine evil thoughts lodge within thee?

⁶ There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John.

¹¹ And this, knowing the season, that now it is high time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed.

¹⁴ Wherefore [he] saith, Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine upon thee.

² For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. ³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape. ⁴ But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief: ⁵ for ye are all sons of light, and sons of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness; ⁶ so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter froward things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

⁴ He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a robber; and thy want as an armed man.

²⁸ And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.

³ For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and the covetous renounceth, [yea], contemneth the LORD.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression: under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise [and] to do good.

² Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah ⁴ Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

⁷ Behold, they belch out with their mouth; swords are in their lips: for who, [say they], doth hear?

⁸ They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: they speak loftily. ⁹ They have set their mouth in the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

¹² To deliver thee from the way of evil, from the men that speak froward things;

²⁴ Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.

¹⁴ Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth evil continually; he soweth discord.

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

⁶ The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but they that deal treacherously shall be taken in their own mischief.

²⁷ A worthless man deviseth mischief: and in his lips there is as a scorching fire.

⁴ An evil-doer giveth heed to wicked lips; [and] a liar giveth ear to a mischievous tongue.

² One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first ripe: and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.

⁸ And as the bad figs, which cannot be eaten, they are so bad; surely thus saith the LORD, So will I give up Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his princes, and the residue of Jerusalem, that remain in this land, and them that dwell in the land of Egypt: ⁹ I will even give them up to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil; to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places whither I shall drive them. ¹⁰ And I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their fathers.

³⁴ Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

³⁰ and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

¹³ And withal they learn also [to be] idle, going about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

¹⁰ For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision, ¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.

²¹ Wherefore putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

¹² Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?

¹⁹ Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

⁶ So that she findeth not the level path of life: her ways are unstable [and] she knoweth [it] not.

¹⁰ He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

⁴ He deviseth iniquity upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.

¹⁴ Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of evil;

²⁹ Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief; ¹⁹ A false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

²⁸ A froward man scattereth abroad strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. ²⁹ A man of violence enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him in a way that is not good. ³⁰ He that shutteth his eyes, [it is] to devise froward things: he that compresseth his lips bringeth evil to pass.

⁸ The way of him that is laden with guilt is exceeding crooked: but as for the pure, his work is right.

⁸ He that soweth iniquity shall reap calamity: and the rod of his wrath shall fail.

¹⁷ He that passeth by, [and] vexeth himself with strife belonging not to him, is [like] one that taketh a dog by the ears. ¹⁸ As a madman who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death; ¹⁹ So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport? ²⁰ For lack of wood the fire goeth out: and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth. ²¹ [As] coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to inflame strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

⁷ The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the meek with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it cannot rest, and its waters cast up mire and dirt.

² And he said unto me, Son of man, these are the men that devise iniquity, and that give wicked counsel in this city.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: he hath no standing corn; the blade shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

¹⁷ Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye learned: and turn away from them.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that soweth unto his own flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth unto the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life.

¹⁶ but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

²² Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver:

¹⁸ Surely thou settest them in slippery places: thou castest them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

²⁷ When your fear cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you.

¹ He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant. ¹⁴ And he shall break it as a potter’s vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing; so that there shall not be found among the pieces thereof a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the cistern.

¹¹ and shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Even so will I break this people and this city, as one breaketh a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury in Topheth, till there be no place to bury.

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.

¹⁰ There shall not be found with thee any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, one that useth divination, one that practiseth augury, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer, ¹¹ or a charmer, or a consulter with a familiar spirit, or a wizard, or a necromancer. ¹² For whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

¹⁸ Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the wages of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

⁴ her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

¹⁶ For all that do such things; [even] all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

⁵ The LORD trieth the righteous: but the wicked and him that loveth violence his soul hateth.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the upright.

¹ A FALSE balance is an abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

²⁰ They that are perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD: but such as are perfect in [their] way are his delight.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight. ⁹ The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

¹⁰ Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them alike are an abomination to the LORD.

²³ Divers weights are an abomination to the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

¹⁸ There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:

²¹ For three things the earth doth tremble, and for four, [which] it cannot bear:

²⁴ There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:

²⁹ There be three things which are stately in their march, yea, four which are stately in going:

³ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Damascus, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have threshed Gilead with threshing instruments of iron:

⁶ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Gaza, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole people, to deliver them up to Edom:

⁹ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Tyre, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole people to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:

¹¹ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Edom, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever:

¹ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Moab, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:

⁴ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Judah, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have rejected the law of the LORD, and have not kept his statutes, and their lies have caused them to err, after the which their fathers did walk:

⁶ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Israel, yea, for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have sold the righteous for silver and the needy for a pair of shoes:

²⁷ and there shall in no wise enter into it anything unclean, or he that maketh an abomination and a lie: but only they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

¹⁰ that innocent blood be not shed in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

²⁵ Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁴ and also for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood: and the LORD would not pardon.

⁶ Thou shalt destroy them that speak lies: the LORD abhorreth the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

⁴ The wicked, in the pride of his countenance, [saith], He will not require [it]. All his thoughts are, There is no God.

²⁷ For thou wilt save the afflicted people; but the haughty eyes thou wilt bring down.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be dumb; which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.

⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. ⁸ They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: they speak loftily.

⁵ Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour, him will I destroy: him that hath an high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, [and] from a deceitful tongue. ³ What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee, thou deceitful tongue?

¹ A Song of Ascents; of David. LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too wonderful for me.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

²² Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness uttereth lies.

⁷ Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

⁴ An high look, and a proud heart, [even] the lamp of the wicked, is sin.

²⁸ A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

¹³ There is a generation, Oh how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.

¹⁵ And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

⁹ The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue muttereth wickedness. ⁴ None sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch basilisks’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. ⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands. ⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation ard destruction are in their paths.

¹ Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land. ² There is nought but swearing and breaking faith, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery; they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

⁴⁴ Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and stood not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

¹⁵ Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.

⁵ And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood.

⁸ He that deviseth to do evil, men shall call him a mischievous person.

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation ard destruction are in their paths.

¹⁷ and let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood;

¹⁶ Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

¹ Thou shalt not take up a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

¹⁶ If an unrighteous witness rise up against any man to testify against him of wrong-doing; ¹⁷ then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges which shall be in those days; ¹⁸ and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; ¹⁹ then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to do unto his brother: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee. ²⁰ And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of thee.

¹⁰ and set two men, sons of Belial, before him, and let them bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst curse God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he die. ¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ And the two men, sons of Belial, came in and sat before him: and the men of Belial bare witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

¹² Deliver me not over unto the will of mine adversaries: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

¹¹ Unrighteous witnesses rise up; they ask me of things that I know not.

¹⁷ He that uttereth truth sheweth forth righteousness, but a false witness deceit.

²⁸ A froward man scattereth abroad strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that uttereth lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished; and he that uttereth lies shall perish.

¹⁰ Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and ignominy shall cease.

¹⁸ A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

²⁰ For lack of wood the fire goeth out: and where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings:

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death;

¹³ and set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak words against this holy place, and the law:

²³ But foolish and ignorant questionings refuse, knowing that they gender strifes.

¹⁴ But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. ¹⁶ For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.

¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace.

⁹ I wrote somewhat unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not. ¹⁰ Therefore, if I come, I will bring to remembrance his works which he doeth, prating against us with wicked words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and them that would he forbiddeth, and casteth [them] out of the church.

¹⁸ If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not hearken unto them:

¹⁶ Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee. ² Keep my commandments and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye. ³ Bind them upon thy fingers; write them upon the table of thine heart. ⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding [thy] kinswoman:

²² Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

¹¹ There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

¹⁶ And it shall be for a sign upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt.

⁸ And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee.

²¹ Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

³ being made manifest that ye are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in tables [that are] hearts of flesh.

⁴ As for the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the ways of the violent.

³ O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me: let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.

⁹ Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed [thereto] according to thy word.

¹¹ Thy word have I laid up in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

²⁴ Thy testimonies also are my delight [and] my counsellors.

⁵⁴ Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

⁹⁷ Oh how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

¹⁴⁸ Mine eyes prevented the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word.

¹¹ Discretion shall watch over thee, understanding shall keep thee:

²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way securely, and thy foot shall not stumble. ²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

¹⁸ After this shall he turn his face unto the isles, and shall take many: but a prince shall cause the reproach offered by him to cease; yea, moreover, he shall cause his reproach to turn upon him. ¹⁹ Then he shall turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land: but he shall stumble and fall, and shall not be found. ²⁰ Then shall stand up in his place one that shall cause an exactor to pass through the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. ²¹ And in his place shall stand up a contemptible person, to whom they had not given the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in time of security, and shall obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

¹⁷ Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbour, and not bear sin because of him.

⁸ The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

⁹⁸ Thy commandments make me wiser than mine enemies; for they are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more understanding than all my teachers; for thy testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the aged, because I have kept thy precepts.

¹⁰⁵ Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path,

⁵ Let the righteous smite me, [it shall be] a kindness; and let him reprove me, [it shall be as] oil upon the head; let not my head refuse it: for even in their wickedness shall my prayer continue.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

⁴ And he taught me, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words; keep my commandments, and live:

¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

²⁴ To the wise the way of life [goeth] upward, that he may depart from Sheol beneath.

³¹ The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life shall abide among the wise.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.

²⁰ To the law and to the testimony! if they speak not according to this word, surely there is no morning for them.

⁸ And unto this people thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.

¹⁹ And we have the word of prophecy [made] more sure; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:

⁵ Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I come to thee, and will move thy candlestick out of its place, except thou repent.

¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;

³ For the lips of a strange woman drop honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

²⁶ And I find a thing more bitter than death, [even] the woman whose heart is snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

² And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; (for she was purified from her uncleanness;) and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

³⁰ And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her eyes, and tired her head, and looked out at the window.

⁹ Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, [my] bride; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

²⁸ but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

¹⁴ but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.

¹⁴ that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

³⁶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a morsel of bread.

¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength; and thy labours [be] in the house of an alien;

²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

³ Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth [his] substance.

⁸ Scornful men set a city in a flame: but wise men turn away wrath.

⁸ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.

¹⁸ and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD: Woe to the women that sew pillows upon all elbows, and make kerchiefs for the head of [persons of] every stature to hunt souls! will ye hunt the souls of my people, and save souls alive for yourselves?

¹³ And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country; and there he wasted his substance with riotous living. ¹⁴ And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want. ¹⁵ And he went and joined himself to one of the citizens of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.

³⁰ but when this thy son came, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou killedst for him the fatted calf.

⁹ If mine heart have been enticed unto a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door: ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For that were an heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: ¹² For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

⁴ They are all adulterers; they are as an oven heated by the baker; he ceaseth to stir [the fire], from the kneading of the dough until it be leavened. ⁵ On the day of our king the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine; he stretched out his hand with scorners. ⁶ For they have made ready their heart like an oven, whiles they lie in wait: their baker sleepeth all the night; in the morning it burneth as a flaming fire. ⁷ They are all hot as an oven, and devour their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.

⁵ So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!

¹⁸ And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? ¹⁹ Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so that I took her to be my wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

⁴ Now Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay even a righteous nation? ⁵ Said he not himself unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and the innocency of my hands have I done this. ⁶ And God said unto him in the dream, Yea, I know that in the integrity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her. ⁷ Now therefore restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lain with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. ¹¹ And Abimelech charged all the people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

¹⁰ And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; (for she was purified from her uncleanness;) and she returned unto her house.

⁹ Wherefore hast thou despised the word of the LORD, to do that which is evil in his sight? thou hast smitten Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

²¹ And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father’s concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong.

⁵ Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: [though] hand [join] in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. ⁹ shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

¹¹ And one hath committed abomination with his neighbour’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers; and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger [from his right], and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

¹ Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

³⁹ Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lioness? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,

¹ If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. ² If the thief be found breaking in, and be smitten that he die, there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him. ³ If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be bloodguiltiness for him: he should make restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. ⁴ If the theft be found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall pay double.

⁶ and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down; according to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice.

²⁵ But forasmuch as he had not [wherewith] to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

⁸ And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have wrongfully exacted aught of any man, I restore fourfold.

⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? ¹⁰ And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, [or] to be with her.

³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou:

¹⁴ Thou shalt not commit adultery.

¹⁸ For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead: ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither do they attain unto the paths of life:

²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

⁷ And I beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

²⁵ I turned about, and my heart [was set] to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason [of things], and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness: ²⁶ And I find a thing more bitter than death, [even] the woman whose heart is snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

³¹ Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereto ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

¹¹ Whoredom and wine and new wine take away the understanding. ¹² My people ask counsel at their stock, and their staff declareth unto them: for the spirit of whoredom hath caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring from under their God.

⁹ It is thy destruction, O Israel, that [thou art] against me, against thy help.

²² Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. ²⁴ Wherefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonoured among themselves:

⁴ [Let] marriage [be] had in honour among all, and [let] the bed [be] undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

⁴ Unstable as water, thou shalt not have the excellency; Because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed: Then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.

¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and shaved off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times, and shake myself. But he wist not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

⁵ because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did strange women cause to sin.

O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt, because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

⁸ Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

⁹ Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength; and thy labours [be] in the house of an alien; ¹¹ And thou mourn at thy latter end, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

⁶ and Jesse begat David the king. And David begat Solomon of her [that had been the wife] of Uriah;

¹⁴ and the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled:

¹¹ Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

²⁹ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel. ³⁰ And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take counsel, and speak.

⁴ Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before jealousy?

⁶ Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the flashes thereof are flashes of fire, a very flame of the LORD.

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

¹ Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given victory unto Syria: he was also a mighty man of valour, [but he was] a leper.

³ For I was a son unto my father, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.

¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, [and] with an impudent face she said unto him:

²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

⁹ And the mean man is bowed down, and the great man is brought low; therefore forgive them not.

⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have had respect of persons in the law.
