¹ Call now; is there any that will answer thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn? ² For vexation killeth the foolish man, and jealousy slayeth the silly one. ³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance. ⁶ For affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground; ⁷ But man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward. ⁸ But as for me, I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: ⁹ Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number: ¹⁰ Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields: ¹¹ So that he setteth up on high those that be low; and those which mourn are exalted to safety. ¹² He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saveth from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. ¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty. ¹⁸ For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole. ¹⁹ He shall deliver thee in six troubles; yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. ²⁰ In famine he shall redeem thee from death; and in war from the power of the sword. ²¹ Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. ²² At destruction and dearth thou shalt laugh; neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. ²³ For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. ²⁴ And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou shalt visit thy fold, and shalt miss nothing. ²⁵ Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in its season. ²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

² And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, And rose from Seir unto them; He shined forth from mount Paran, And he came from the ten thousands of holy ones: At his right hand was a fiery law unto them. ³ Yea, he loveth the peoples; All his saints are in thy hand: And they sat down at thy feet; [Every one] shall receive of thy words.

¹⁸ Behold, he putteth no trust in his servants; and his angels he chargeth with folly:

⁸ Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? ⁹ What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us? ¹⁰ With us are both the grayheaded and the very aged men, much elder than thy father.

¹⁵ Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

³ As for the saints that are in the earth, they are the excellent in whom is all my delight.

¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, [and] Aaron the saint of the LORD.

¹ Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the peoples renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us come near together to judgment.

²¹ Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob. ²² Let them bring them forth, and declare unto us what shall happen: declare ye the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or shew us things for to come. ²³ Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods: yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it together.

¹ Therefore let us also, seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

⁸ And Saul was very wroth, and this saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? ⁹ And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

⁴ Thou that tearest thyself in thine anger, shall the earth be forsaken for thee? or shall the rock be removed out of its place?

¹ For the Chief Musician. [A Psalm] of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works; there is none that doeth good.

⁴ I said unto the arrogant, Deal not arrogantly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:

⁶ A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this:

¹⁷ Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

⁵ O ye simple, understand subtilty; and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ A fool’s vexation is presently known: but a prudent man concealeth shame.

⁹ Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

¹¹ And Ephraim is like a silly dove, without understanding: they call unto Egypt, they go to Assyria.

⁹ And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry even unto death.

⁸ but unto them that are factious, and obey not the truth, but obey unrighteousness, [shall be] wrath and indignation,

⁶ For of these are they that creep into houses, and take captive silly women laden with sins, led away by divers lusts,

¹⁵ Cursed be the man that maketh a graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and setteth it up in secret. And all the people shall answer and say, Amen. ¹⁶ Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. ¹⁷ Cursed be he that removeth his neighbour’s landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen. ¹⁸ Cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of the way. And all the people shall say, Amen. ¹⁹ Cursed be he that wresteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁰ Cursed be he that lieth with his father’s wife; because he hath uncovered his father’s skirt. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²¹ Cursed be he that lieth with any manner of beast. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²² Cursed be he that lieth with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²³ Cursed be he that lieth with his mother in law. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁴ Cursed be he that smiteth his neighbour in secret. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁵ Cursed be he that taketh reward to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say, Amen. ²⁶ Cursed be he that confirmeth not the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen.

¹⁸ He is swift upon the face of the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he turneth not by the way of the vineyards.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, though he get him gain, when God taketh away his soul?

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

²⁵ Let their habitation be desolate; let none dwell in their tents.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as [other] men; neither are they plagued like [other] men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. ⁸ They scoff, and in wickedness utter oppression: they speak loftily. ⁹ They have set their mouth in the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.

¹⁸ Surely thou settest them in slippery places: thou castest them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How are they become a desolation in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

⁷ When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed for ever:

¹ Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet would I reason the cause with thee: wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they at ease that deal very treacherously? ² Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root; they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins. ³ But thou, O LORD, knowest me; thou seest me, and triest mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

²⁰ For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take.

⁵ thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me;

¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

⁴ If thy children have sinned against him, and he have delivered them into the hand of their transgression:

⁷ Although thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand?

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son’s son among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned.

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

² Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be vagabonds, and beg; and let them seek [their bread] out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let strangers make spoil of his labour. ¹² Let there be none to extend mercy unto him; neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; in the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

¹⁵⁵ Salvation is far from the wicked; for they seek not thy statutes.

⁵ Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins; ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right].

⁴ Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were offenders above all the men that dwell in Jerusalem? ⁵ I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

³³ The fruit of thy ground, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway:

⁵¹ and he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee corn, wine, or oil, the increase of thy kine, or the young of thy flock, until he have caused thee to perish.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them; ⁴ and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. ⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it. ⁶ And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

¹¹ And the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹ Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh in chains, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

³ And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and art upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth [abundantly].

⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon the toils. ⁹ A gin shall take [him] by the heel, [and] a snare shall lay hold on him. ¹⁰ A noose is hid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

¹⁵ He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly.

⁸ The LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and strangers shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his maw with my delicates; he hath cast me out.

⁴⁴ And I will do judgment upon Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.

⁵ The Lord is become as an enemy, he hath swallowed up Israel; he hath swallowed up all her palaces, he hath destroyed his strong holds: and he hath multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: he hath no standing corn; the blade shall yield no meal; if so be it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.

²⁷ Were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, Lest their adversaries should misdeem, Lest they should say, Our hand is exalted, And the LORD hath not done all this.

⁹ And see, if it goeth up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.

²⁹ When he giveth quietness, who then can condemn? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether [it be done] unto a nation, or unto a man, alike:

⁷ For we are consumed in thine anger, and in thy wrath are we troubled.

⁷ I form the light, and create darkness; I make peace, and create evil; I am the LORD, that doeth all these things.

³⁸ Out of the mouth of the Most High cometh there not evil and good?

⁴ They speak [vain] words, swearing falsely in making covenants: therefore judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

⁶ Shall the trumpet be blown in a city, and the people not be afraid? shalt evil befall a city, and the LORD hath not done it?

¹⁵ looking carefully lest [there be] any man that falleth short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble [you], and thereby the many be defiled;

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸ thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; ¹⁹ in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we bring our years to an end as a tale [that is told].

⁸ All things are full of weariness; man cannot utter [it]: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

²² For what hath a man of all his labour, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboureth under the sun?

¹⁵ As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he go again as he came, and shall take nothing for his labour, which he may carry away in his hand. ¹⁶ And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that he laboureth for the wind? ¹⁷ All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he is sore vexed and hath sickness and wrath.

¹³ There hath no temptation taken you but such as man can bear: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation make also the way of escape, that ye may be able to endure it.

⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies; ⁸ and he said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the company which is left shall escape. ⁹ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good: ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two companies. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children. ¹² And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

¹² And when he was in distress, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ And he prayed unto him; and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.

⁵ If thou wouldest seek diligently unto God, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;

²¹ Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee; and thou shalt pay thy vows.

⁵ Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.

¹⁵ And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

I will cry unto God with my voice; even unto God with my voice, and he wilt give ear unto me. ² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not; my soul refused to be comforted.

¹ Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly. ² And he said, I called by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he answered me; out of the belly of hell cried I, [and] thou heardest my voice. ³ For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas, and the flood was round about me; all thy waves and thy billows passed over me. ⁴ And I said, am cast out from before thine eyes; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. ⁵ The waters compassed me about, even to the soul; the deep was round about me; the weeds were wrapped about my head. ⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars [closed] upon me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. ⁷ When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

¹² For the which cause I suffer also these things: yet I am not ashamed; for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed unto him against that day.

²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:

¹⁹ Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.

¹⁰ Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, marvelous things without number.

⁷ Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? ⁸ It is high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than Sheol; what canst thou know? ⁹ The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

⁵ They that are deceased tremble beneath the waters and the inhabitants thereof. ⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and Abaddon hath no covering. ⁷ He stretcheth out the north over empty space, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. ⁸ He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. ⁹ He closeth in the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. ¹⁰ He hath described a boundary upon the face of the waters, unto the confines of light and darkness. ¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his rebuke. ¹² He stirreth up the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through Rahab. ¹³ By his spirit the heavens are garnished; his hand hath pierced the swift serpent. ¹⁴ Lo, these are but the outskirts of his ways: and how small a whisper do we hear of him! but the thunder of his power who can understand?

⁵ God thundereth marvelously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that which I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁵ Many, O LORD my God, are the wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be set in order unto thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

¹⁸ Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things:

¹⁰ For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

¹⁸ If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

²⁶ When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder:

²⁸ Which the skies pour down and drop upon man abundantly.

²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the waste and desolate [ground]; and to cause the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

⁹ Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it, thou greatly enrichest it; the river of God is full of water: thou providest them corn, when thou hast so prepared the earth. ¹⁰ Thou waterest her furrows abundantly; thou settlest the ridges thereof: thou makest it soft with showers; thou blessest the springing thereof. ¹¹ Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.

⁸ Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains.

²⁴ Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; that reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

¹³ when he uttereth his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasuries.

²² Are there any among the vanities of the heathen that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee; for thou hast made all these things.

⁷ And I also have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.

¹⁷ And yet he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave you from heaven rains and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness.

²⁷ The eternal God is [thy] dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms: And he thrust out the enemy from before thee, And said, Destroy.

⁷ The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, he also lifteth up. ⁸ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, he lifteth up the needy from the dunghill, to make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.

¹⁴ Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

⁴¹ Yet setteth he the needy on high from affliction, and maketh [him] families like a flock.

⁷ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the needy from the dunghill;

²⁴ And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it.

⁵² He hath put down princes from [their] thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree. ⁵³ The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away.

²¹ Blessed [are] ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed [are] ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

⁹ But let the brother of low degree glory in his high estate:

⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁷ Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. ⁹ Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you.

³ Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you unto his eternal glory in Christ, after that ye have suffered a little while, shall himself perfect, stablish, strengthen you.

¹⁵ And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known unto us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, every one unto his work.

¹⁶ With him is strength and effectual working; the deceived and the deceiver are his. ¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and judges maketh he fools.

¹¹ For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a device, which they are not able to perform.

¹⁰ The LORD bringeth the counsel of the nations to nought: he maketh the thoughts of the peoples to be of none effect. ¹¹ The counsel of the LORD standeth fast for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

¹⁷ For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

³ And the spirit of Egypt shall be made void in the midst of it; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek unto the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.

³⁶ And the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

¹¹ And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a truth, that the Lord hath sent forth his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

¹² And when it was day, the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul. ¹³ And they were more than forty which made this conspiracy. ¹⁴ And they came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Now therefore do ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you, as though ye would judge of his case more exactly: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to slay him. ¹⁶ But Paul’s sister’s son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle, and told Paul. ¹⁷ And Paul called unto him one of the centurions, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath something to tell him. ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and saith, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and asked me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say to thee. ¹⁹ And the chief captain took him by the hand, and going aside asked him privately, What is that thou hast to tell me? ²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to ask thee to bring down Paul tomorrow unto the council, as though thou wouldest inquire somewhat more exactly concerning him. ²¹ Do not thou therefore yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves under a curse, neither to eat nor to drink till they have slain him: and now are they ready, looking for the promise from thee. ²² So the chief captain let the young man go, charging him, Tell no man that thou hast signified these things to me.

³¹ And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

³⁴ but if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant in time past, so will I now be thy servant: then shalt thou defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.

²³ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

⁴ And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king’s house, to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him. ⁵ And the king’s servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in. ⁶ So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Haman said in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself? ⁷ And Haman said unto the king, For the man whom the king delighteth to honour, ⁸ let royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and on the head of which a crown royal is set: ⁹ and let the apparel and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king’s most noble princes, that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour, and cause him to ride on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour. ¹⁰ Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, that sitteth at the king’s gate: let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken. ¹¹ Then took Haman the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and caused him to ride through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king’s wrath pacified.

²⁵ but when [the matter] came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head; and that he and his sons should he hanged on the gallows.

¹⁵ He hath made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made. ¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁵ The nations are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. ¹⁶ The LORD hath made himself known, he hath executed judgment: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higaion. Selah

²⁶ With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the perverse thou wilt shew thyself froward.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me their net [in] a pit, without cause have they digged [a pit] for my soul. ⁸ Let destruction come upon him at unawares; and let his net that he hath hid catch himself: with destruction let him fall therein.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the upright.

⁵¹ He hath shewed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.

¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the prudence of the prudent will I reject. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness:

²⁹ and thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled alway, and there shall be none to save thee.

²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind, yea, we grope as they that have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among them that are lusty we are as dead men.

⁹ And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day.

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

¹⁴ Thon hast seen [it]; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to take it into thy hand: the helpless committeth [himself] unto thee; thou hast been the helper of the fatherless.

¹⁷ LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the meek: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

¹⁰ All my bones shall say, LORD, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him?

⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

¹² For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; and the poor, that hath no helper. ¹³ He shall have pity on the poor and needy, and the souls of the needy he shall save.

³¹ For he shall stand at the right hand of the needy, to save him from them that judge his soul.

¹² I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the needy.

⁷ But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

⁸ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, he lifteth up the needy from the dunghill, to make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them. ⁹ He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

¹⁸ For the needy shall not alway be forgotten, nor the expectation of the poor perish for ever.

¹¹ But the king shall rejoice in God: every one that sweareth by him shall glory; for the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

⁴² The upright shall see it, and be glad; and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

³² What then shall one answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded Zion, and in her shall the afflicted of his people take refuge.

¹² Turn you to the strong hold, ye prisoners of hope: even today do I declare that I will render double unto thee.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

¹² Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest out of thy law;

¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his reproof: ¹² For whom the LORD loveth he reproveth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself [thus], Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed [to the yoke]: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.

⁵ and ye have forgotten the exhortation, which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him; ⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. ⁷ It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom [his] father chasteneth not? ⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they verily for a few days chastened [us] as seemed good to them; but he for [our] profit, that [we] may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous, but grievous: yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

¹² Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he hath been approved, he shall receive the crown of life, which [the Lord] promised to them that love him.

¹¹ Behold, we call them blessed which endured: ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord, how that the Lord is full of pity, and merciful.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

³⁹ See now that I, even I, am he, And there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I have wounded, and I heal: And there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

⁶ The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

³ He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

²⁶ Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the hurt of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.

¹ Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

³ For he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. ⁴ He shall cover thee with his pinions, and under his wings shalt thou take refuge: his truth is a shield and a buckler. ⁵ Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day; ⁶ For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. ⁷ A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee. ⁸ Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the reward of the wicked. ⁹ For thou, O LORD, art my refuge! thou hast made the Most High thy habitation; ¹⁰ There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.

¹⁶ For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked are overthrown by calamity.

⁸ For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell [us] in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment;

⁷ And God sent me before you to preserve you a remnant in the earth, and to save you alive by a great deliverance.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

³ Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, even then will I be confident.

¹⁹ To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

¹⁹ They shall not be ashamed in the time of evil: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

⁷ None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

¹⁰ It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who rescueth David his servant from the hurtful sword.

³ The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he thrusteth away the desire of the wicked.

¹⁶ He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: his bread shall be given [him]; his waters shall be sure.

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, where are thy plagues? O grave, where is thy destruction? repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

¹⁷ For though the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

⁶ And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for [these things] must needs come to pass; but the end is not yet.

²⁰ In the covert of thy presence shalt thou hide them from the plottings of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

⁴ My soul is among lions; I lie among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁵ Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day; ⁶ For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. ⁷ A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; [but] it shall not come nigh thee.

¹⁸ There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of me, saith the LORD.

¹⁸ Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

⁵ So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: ⁸ but the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison.

²¹ This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

¹³ Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under feet.

⁹ No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast go up thereon, they shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk [there]:

²⁵ The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox: and dust shall be the serpent’s meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.

²⁵ And I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land: and they shall dwell securely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

¹⁸ And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the land, and will make them to lie down safely.

⁶ And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

¹² They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. ¹³ Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the serpent shalt thou trample under feet.

⁶ And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. ⁷ And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. ⁸ And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the basilisk’s den. ⁹ They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁵ If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts; ¹⁶ though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.

²² My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁶ Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out.

³ And when David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.

⁶ If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, wax mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established with them in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

¹³ His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the land.

¹⁰ There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way; they found no city of habitation.

⁴⁰ He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the waste, where there is no way.

⁷ The LORD shall keep thee from all evil; he shall keep thy soul. ⁸ The LORD shall keep thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth and for evermore.

⁵ And the LORD will create over the whole habitation of mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for over all the glory [shall be spread] a canopy. ⁶ And there shall be a pavilion for a shadow in the day-time from the heat, and for a refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain.

⁵ And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to tell them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

⁹ And I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you; and will establish my covenant with you.

⁴ Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock.

¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. ¹⁶ And after this Job lived an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, [even] four generations.

¹⁶ There shall be abundance of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.

² His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

³ Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb is [his] reward. ⁴ As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of youth. ⁵ Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

³ Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine, in the innermost parts of thine house: thy children like olive plants, round about thy table. ⁴ Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD. ⁵ The LORD shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. ⁶ Yea, thou shalt see thy children’s children. Peace be upon Israel.

³ For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and streams upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: ⁴ and they shall spring up among the grass, as willows by the watercourses.

¹⁵ But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

⁸ And Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full [of years]; and was gathered to his people.

¹⁶ And after this Job lived an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, [even] four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

¹⁶ With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

¹³ to keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out: ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:) ¹⁰ Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?

² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

¹⁷ I will shew thee, hear thou me; and that which I have seen I will declare:

² Can a man be profitable unto God? surely he that is wise is profitable unto himself.

¹¹ Behold, I waited for your words, I listened for your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say. ¹² Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none that convinced Job, or that answered his words, among you.

² The works of the LORD are great, sought out of all them that have pleasure therein.

³ Yea, if thou cry after discernment, and lift up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

¹² If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself: and if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
