¹ Then Job answered and said, ² How long will ye vex my soul and break me in pieces with words? ³ These ten times have ye reproached me: ye are not ashamed that ye deal hardly with me. ⁴ And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remaineth with myself. ⁵ If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach: ⁶ Know now that God hath subverted me [in my cause], and hath compassed me with his net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry for help, but there is no judgment. ⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and hath set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he plucked up like a tree. ¹¹ He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as [one of] his adversaries. ¹² His troops come on together, and cast up their way against me, and encamp round about my tent. ¹³ He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are wholly estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I call unto my servant, and he giveth me no answer, [though] I entreat him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, and my supplication to the children of my [mother’s] womb. ¹⁸ Even young children despise me; if I arise, they speak against me. ¹⁹ All my inward friends abhor me: and they whom I loved are turned against me. ²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. ²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me. ²² Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh? ²³ Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were inscribed in a book! ²⁴ That with an iron pen and lead they were graven in the rock for ever! ²⁵ But I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand up at the last upon the earth: ²⁶ And after my skin hath been thus destroyed, yet from my flesh shall I see God: ²⁷ Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another. My reins are consumed within me. ²⁸ If ye say, How we will persecute him! seeing that the root of the matter is found in me; ²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath [bringeth] the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.

¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death.

² How long wilt thou speak these things? and [how long] shall the words of thy mouth be [like] a mighty wind?

² How long will ye lay snares for words? consider, and afterwards we will speak.

² As God liveth, who hath taken away my right; and the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul;

² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am withered away: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. ³ My soul also is sore vexed: and thou, O LORD, how long?

¹ For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD, wilt thou forget me for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

¹⁰ As with a sword in my bones, mine adversaries reproach me; while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

⁷ Behold, they belch out with their mouth; swords are in their lips: for who, [say they], doth hear?

³ Who have whet their tongue like a sword, and have aimed their arrows, even bitter words:

¹⁸ There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: ⁸ but the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison.

⁷ and delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked ⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed [his] righteous soul from day to day with [their] lawless deeds):

¹⁰ and they cried with a great voice, saying, How long, O Master, the holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

⁷ And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.

⁷ And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly with them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

²⁶ When I break your staff of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.

²² because all those men which have seen my glory, and my signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have tempted me these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;

¹² And it came to pass that, when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times from all places, Ye must return unto us.

⁶ Is not thy fear [of God] thy confidence, [and] thy hope the integrity of thy ways? ⁷ Remember, I pray thee, who [ever] perished, being innocent? or where were the upright cut off? ⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow trouble, reap the same. ⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger are they consumed. ¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered abroad.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

⁴ If thy children have sinned against him, and he have delivered them into the hand of their transgression: ⁵ If thou wouldest seek diligently unto God, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; ⁶ If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

³ Should thy boastings make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

¹⁴ If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not unrighteousness dwell in thy tents;

⁴ Yea, thou doest away with fear, and restrainest devotion before God. ⁵ For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

¹¹ Are the consolations of God too small for thee, and the word [that dealeth] gently with thee? ¹² Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?

⁴ Thou that tearest thyself in thine anger, shall the earth be forsaken for thee? or shall the rock be removed out of its place? ⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp above him shall be put out. ⁷ The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon the toils. ⁹ A gin shall take [him] by the heel, [and] a snare shall lay hold on him. ¹⁰ A noose is hid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way. ¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall chase him at his heels. ¹² His strength shall be hunger-bitten and calamity shall be ready for his halting. ¹³ It shall devour the members of his body, [yea], the firstborn of death shall devour his members. ¹⁴ He shall be rooted out of his tent wherein he trusteth; and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son’s son among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned. ²⁰ They that come after shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God.

¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, and my supplication to the children of my [mother’s] womb.

⁸ I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother’s children.

²⁰ And in every matter of wisdom and understanding, concerning which the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his realm.

¹⁷ And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done perversely: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.

³ Should thy boastings make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed? ⁴ For thou sayest, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes. ⁵ But Oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; ⁶ And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that iris manifold in effectual working! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

¹² If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself: and if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

⁴ Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

¹⁰ For we must all be made manifest before the judgment-seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things [done] in the body, according to what he hath done, whether [it be] good or bad.

⁵ For each man shall bear his own burden.

⁶ And her rival provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

³ And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

²⁶ Let them be ashamed and confounded together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

¹⁶ For I said, Lest they rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me.

¹¹ By this I know that thou delightest in me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

¹ And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saving, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name; take thou away our reproach.

⁸ Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.

¹⁰ This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts.

⁷ The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem be not magnified above Judah.

²⁵ Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men.

² And he answered and said unto them, Think ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they have suffered these things? ³ I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were offenders above all the men that dwell in Jerusalem?

² And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he should be born blind?

³⁴ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I unto thee, O thou watcher of men? why hast thou set me as a mark for thee, so that I am a burden to myself?

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly, and casteth me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and he brake me asunder; yea, he hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces: he hath also set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach; he runneth upon me like a giant.

⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh upon the toils. ⁹ A gin shall take [him] by the heel, [and] a snare shall lay hold on him. ¹⁰ A noose is hid for him in the ground, and a trap for him in the way.

⁹ But now thou hast cast [us] off, and brought us to dishonour; and goest not forth with our hosts. ¹⁰ Thou makest us to turn back from the adversary: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. ¹¹ Thou hast given us like sheep [appointed] for meat; and hast scattered us among the nations. ¹² Thou sellest thy people for nought, and hast not increased [thy wealth] by their price. ¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. ¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹⁰ For thou, O God, hast proved us: thou hast tried us, as silver is tried. ¹¹ Thou broughtest us into the net; thou layedst a sore burden upon our loins. ¹² Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; but thou broughtest us out into a wealthy place.

¹² Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith the LORD hath afflicted [me] in the day of his fierce anger. ¹³ From on high hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them: he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back; he hath made me desolate and faint all the day.

¹³ My net also will I spread upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare: and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet shall he not see it, though he shall die there.

³ Thus saith the Lord GOD: I will spread out my net over thee with a company of many peoples; and they shall bring thee up in my net.

¹² When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven: I will chastise them, as their congregation hath heard.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if [it be] not [he], who then is it?

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head; being filled with ignominy and looking upon mine affliction. ¹⁶ And if [my head] exalt itself, thou huntest me as a lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvelous upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and warfare are with me.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I wait for him: nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him. ¹⁶ This also shall be my salvation; for a godless man shall not come before him. ¹⁷ Hear diligently my speech, and let my declaration be in your ears. ¹⁸ Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I am righteous. ¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? for now shall I hold my peace and give up the ghost. ²⁰ Only do not two things unto me, then will I not hide myself from thy face: ²¹ Withdraw thine hand far from me; and let not thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer thou me. ²³ How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in mine hands, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no [resting] place. ¹⁹ Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and he that coucheth for me is on high.

²¹ That he would maintain the right of a man with God, and of a son of man with his neighbour!

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? Nay; but he would give heed unto me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

²⁰ I cry unto thee, and thou dost not answer me: I stand up, and thou lookest at me.

³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! (lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me;) and [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown.

⁵ For Job hath said, I am righteous, and God hath taken away my right:

⁸ Wilt thou even disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be justified?

² O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou answerest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

⁸ For as often as I speak, I cry out; I cry, Violence and spoil: because the word of the LORD is made a reproach unto me, and a derision, all the day.

⁸ Yea, when I cry and call for help, he shutteth out my prayer.

² O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? I cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save. ³ Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and look upon perverseness? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there is strife, and contention riseth up.

⁷ And when they cried out unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness many days.

²³ [Why is light given] to a man whose way is hid, and whom God hath hedged in?

²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came; and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

⁸ Thou hast put mine acquaintance far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

¹⁰ Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant? he that walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains; and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.

¹² Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery places in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.

⁷ He hath fenced me about, that I cannot go forth; he hath made my chain heavy.

⁹ He hath fenced up my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

⁶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and I will make a fence against her, that she shall not find her paths.

¹² Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.

¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and judges maketh he fools.

⁷ When I went forth to the gate unto the city, when I prepared my seat in the street, ⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood; ⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For when the ear heard [me], then it blessed me; and when the eye saw [me], it gave witness unto me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a diadem.

²⁰ My glory is fresh in me, and my bow is renewed in my hand. ²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel.

¹ But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.

¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased: ¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him.

³⁹ Thou hast abhorred the covenant of thy servant: thou hast profaned his crown [even] to the ground.

⁴⁴ Thou hast made his brightness to cease, and cast his throne down to the ground.

⁶ But ye shall be named the priests of the LORD: men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

¹⁶ The crown is fallen from our head: woe unto us! for we have sinned.

¹¹ As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird: there shall be no birth, and none with child, and no conception.

¹³ And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house, ¹⁴ that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: ¹⁵ and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: ¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? and what is mine end, at I should be patient?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hope of the godless man shall perish: ¹⁴ Whose confidence shall break in sunder, and whose trust is a spider’s web. ¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold fast thereby, but it shall not endure. ¹⁶ He is green before the sun, and his shoots go forth over his garden. ¹⁷ His roots are wrapped about the heap, he beholdeth the place of stones. ¹⁸ If he be destroyed from his place, then it shall deny him, [saying], I have not seen thee.

¹⁴ Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.

¹¹ My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the droughts of my heart.

¹⁵ Where then is my hope? and as for my hope, who shall see it?

²⁰ The womb shall forget him; the worm shall feed sweetly on him; he shall be no more remembered: and unrighteousness shall be broken as a tree.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil. ³⁶ But one passed by, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹³ But unto thee, O LORD, have I cried, and in the morning shall my prayer come before thee. ¹⁴ LORD, why castest thou off my soul? why hidest thou thy face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; thy terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me like water all the day long; they compassed me about together. ¹⁸ Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

¹¹ My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.

⁵ The Lord is become as an enemy, he hath swallowed up Israel; he hath swallowed up all her palaces, he hath destroyed his strong holds: and he hath multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. ⁶ And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden; he hath destroyed his place of assembly: the LORD hath caused solemn assembly and sabbath to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

⁸ [we are] pressed on every side, yet not straitened; perplexed, yet not unto despair; ⁹ pursued, yet not forsaken; smitten down, yet not destroyed;

²² For a fire is kindled in mine anger, And burneth unto the lowest pit, And devoureth the earth with her increase, And setteth on fire the foundations of the mountains.

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?

⁹ He hath torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me; he hath gnashed upon me with his teeth: mine adversary sharpeneth his eyes upon me.

¹⁰ Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy;

⁴⁶ How long, O LORD, wilt thou hid thyself for ever? [how long] shall thy wrath burn like fire?

⁷ For we are consumed in thine anger, and in thy wrath are we troubled.

⁵ The Lord is become as an enemy, he hath swallowed up Israel; he hath swallowed up all her palaces, he hath destroyed his strong holds: and he hath multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

⁵ Ho Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, the staff in whose hand is mine indignation! ⁶ I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

²³ and I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy back as the ground, and as the street, to them that go over.

²¹ For now ye are nothing; ye see a terror, and are afraid. ²² Did I say, Give unto me? or, offer a present for me of your substance? ²³ Or, Deliver me from the adversary’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the oppressors?

⁷ But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company.

¹¹ Because of all mine adversaries I am become a reproach, yea, unto my neighbours exceedingly, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

¹¹ My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

²⁰ Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.

¹⁸ Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.

⁵⁶ But all this is come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

¹⁶ At my first defence no one took my part, but all forsook me: may it not be laid to their account.

²³ And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: ¹³ But it was thou, a man mine equal, my companion, and my familiar friend. ¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together, we walked in the house of God with the throng.

²⁴ He that maketh many friends [doeth it] to his own destruction: but there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

¹⁰ For I have heard the defaming of many, terror on every side. Denounce, and we will denounce him, [say] all my familiar friends, they that watch for my halting; peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

⁵ Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. ⁶ For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.

²¹ And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child: and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.

¹⁸ I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth my bread lifted up his heel against me.

³¹ If the men of my tent said not, Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his flesh? ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street; but I opened my doors to the traveller;

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

⁹ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still hold fast thine integrity? renounce God, and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

¹ My spirit is consumed, my days are extinct, the grave is [ready] for me.

²³ And he went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

⁵ And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

¹⁴ To him that is ready to faint kindness [should be shewed] from his friend; even to him that forsaketh the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, as the channel of brooks that pass away;

⁹ Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

²⁰ He hath put forth his hands against such as were at peace with him: he hath profaned his covenant.

⁴ For my love they are my adversaries: but I [give myself unto] prayer. ⁵ And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

⁴⁸ But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

⁴ And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. ⁵ But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce thee to thy face. ⁶ And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; only spare his life.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin closeth up and breaketh out afresh.

³⁰ My skin is black, [and falleth] from me, and my bones are burned with heat.

¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones: ²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. ²² Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, and his life to the destroyers.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. ¹⁵ My Strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. ¹⁶ For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of evil-doers have enclosed me; they pierced my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I may tell all my bones; they look and stare upon me:

³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture was changed [as] with the drought of summer. Selah

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

³ For my days consume away like smoke, and my bones are burned as a firebrand.

⁵ By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my flesh.

⁴ My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

⁸ Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

¹⁰ Our skin is black like an oven because of the burning heat of famine.

¹¹ But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

⁵ But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will renounce thee to thy face.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof my spirit drinketh up: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁴ To him that is ready to faint kindness [should be shewed] from his friend; even to him that forsaketh the fear of the Almighty.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.

²⁶ And whether one member suffereth, all the members suffer with it; or [one] member is honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

³ Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; them that are evil entreated, as being yourselves also in the body.

¹⁶ And if [my head] exalt itself, thou huntest me as a lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvelous upon me.

²⁵ Wilt thou harass a driven leaf? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

³¹ If the men of my tent said not, Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his flesh?

²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded,

³ who also eat the flesh of my people; and they flay their skin from off them, and break their bones: yea, they chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! (lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me;) and [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

¹ And the LORD said unto me, Take thee a great tablet, and write upon it with the pen of a man, For Maher-shalal-hash-baz;

⁸ Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever.

¹¹ With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a signet, shalt thou engrave the two stones, according to the names of the children of Israel: thou shalt make them to be enclosed in ouches of gold. ¹² And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulderpieces of the ephod, to be stones of memorial for the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

²¹ And the stones shall be according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names; like the engravings of a signet, every one according to his name, they shall be for the twelve tribes.

¹⁶ And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

² And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaister them with plaister: ³ and thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over; that thou mayest go in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of thy fathers, hath promised thee.

⁸ And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.

¹ The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, [and] with the point of a diamond: it is graven upon the table of their heart, and upon the horns of your altars;

¹⁵ and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

¹⁸ and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

¹⁹ Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and he that coucheth for me is on high.

²³ If there be with him an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man what is right for him; ²⁴ Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.

¹⁴ Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my rock, and my redeemer.

³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, and the Most High God their redeemer.

¹¹ For their redeemer is strong; he shall plead their cause against thee.

¹⁴ Thus saith the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and I will bring down all of them as fugitives, even the Chaldeans, in the ships of their rejoicing.

⁵ For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name: and the Holy One of Israel is thy redeemer; the God of the whole earth shall he be called.

²⁰ And a redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD. ²¹ And as for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD: my spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.

³⁴ Their redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

²² For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son; ²³ that all may honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which sent him. ²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life. ²⁵ Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself: ²⁷ and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. ²⁸ Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice, ²⁹ And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done ill, unto the resurrection of judgment.

⁷ in whom we have our redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

¹⁴ And to these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones,

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall dwell in safety.

¹¹ Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; in thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

¹⁵ As for me, I shall behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

¹² For now we see in a mirror, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I have been known.

⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

²¹ who shall fashion anew the body of our humiliation, [that it may be] conformed to the body of his glory, according to the working whereby he is able even to subject all things unto himself.

² Beloved, now are we children of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be. We know that, if he shall be manifested, we shall be like him; for we shall see him even as he is.

⁷ Behold, he cometh with the clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they which pierced him; and all the tribes of the earth shall mourn over him. Even so, Amen.

¹⁷ I see him, but not now: I behold him, but not nigh: There shall come forth a star out of Jacob, And a sceptre shall rise out of Israel, And shall smite through the corners of Moab, And break down all the sons of tumult.

²⁶ My flesh and my heart faileth: [but] God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.

¹⁹ Thy dead shall live; my dead bodies shall arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in the dust: for thy dew is [as] the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast forth the dead.

¹³ And all Israel shall mourn for him, and bury him; for he only of Jeroboam shall come to the grave: because in him there is found some good thing toward the LORD, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam.

²² Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him? ⁸ Will ye respect his person? will ye contend for God? ⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? or as one deceiveth a man, will ye deceive him? ¹⁰ He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly respect persons. ¹¹ Shall not his excellency make you afraid, and his dread fall upon you?

²² He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword:

⁴ Is it for thy fear [of him] that he reproveth thee, that he entereth with thee into judgment?

⁵ Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

⁷ But the LORD sitteth [as king] for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment.

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ So that men shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily there is a God that judgeth in the earth.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether it be good or whether it be evil.

¹ Judge not, that ye be not judged. ² For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you.

¹ Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the [powers] that be are ordained of God. ² Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. ³ For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: ⁴ for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil.

¹¹ Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. ¹² One [only] is the lawgiver and judge, [even] he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbour?
