¹ Then Job answered and said, ² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you. ³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these? ⁴ I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbour, [a man] that called upon God, and he answered him: the just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock. ⁵ In the thought of him that is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for them whose foot slippeth. ⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth [abundantly]. ⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. ⁹ Who knoweth not in all these, that the hand of LORD hath wrought this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. ¹¹ Doth not the ear try words, even as the palate tasteth its meat? ¹² With aged men is wisdom, and in length of days understanding. ¹³ With him is wisdom and might; he hath counsel and understanding. ¹⁴ Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening. ¹⁵ Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; again, he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. ¹⁶ With him is strength and effectual working; the deceived and the deceiver are his. ¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and judges maketh he fools. ¹⁸ He looseth the bond of kings, and bindeth their loins with a girdle. ¹⁹ He leadeth priests away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty. ²⁰ He removeth the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the elders. ²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes, and looseth the belt of the strong. ²² He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death. ²³ He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he spreadeth the nations abroad, and bringeth them in. ²⁴ He taketh away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. ²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

²⁴ Teach me, and I will hold my peace: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred. ²⁵ How forcible are words of uprightness! but what doth your arguing reprove?

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out: ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:) ¹⁰ Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

⁶ And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that iris manifold in effectual working! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

¹² But vain man is void of understanding, yea, man is born as a wild ass’s colt.

² Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

⁴ For thou hast hid their heart from understanding: therefore shalt thou not exalt [them].

¹⁰ But return ye, all of you, and come now: and I shall not find a wise man among you.

³ I have heard the reproof which putteth me to shame, and the spirit of my understanding answereth me.

⁷ I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. ⁸ But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding. ⁹ It is not the great that are wise, nor the aged that understand judgment. ¹⁰ Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion. ¹¹ Behold, I waited for your words, I listened for your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say. ¹² Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none that convinced Job, or that answered his words, among you. ¹³ Beware lest ye say, We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not man:

¹¹ The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out.

²¹ Woe unto them that are wise their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

¹⁰ We are fools for Christ’s sake, but ye are wise in Christ; we are weak, but ye are strong; ye have glory, but we have dishonour.

⁵ I say [this] to move you to shame. Is it so, that there cannot be [found] among you one wise man, who shall be able to decide between his brethren, ⁶ Can that which hath no savour be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? ⁷ My soul refuseth to touch [them]; they are as loathsome meat to me.

² What ye know, [the same] do I know also: I am not inferior unto you. ³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. ⁴ But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value. ⁵ Oh that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

² How hast thou helped him that is without power! how hast thou saved the arm that hath no strength! ³ How hast thou counselled him that hath no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! ⁴ Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

⁵ For I reckon that I am not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.

²¹ I speak by way of disparagement, as though we had been weak. Yet whereinsoever any is bold (I speak in foolishness), I am bold also. ²² Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I. ²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I more; in labours more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths oft.

²⁹ Return, I pray you, let there be no injustice; yea, return again, my cause is righteous.

³ Should thy boastings make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?

¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully: they gather themselves together against me.

²⁰ My friends scorn me: [but] mine eye poureth out tears unto God;

² Surely there are mockers with me, and mine eye abideth in their provocation.

⁶ He hath made me also a byword of the people; and I am become an open abhorring.

³ Suffer me, and I also will speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

¹ But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock.

⁷ All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, [saying], ⁸ Commit [thyself] unto the LORD; let him deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighteth in him.

¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

¹⁵ He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble: I will deliver him, and honour him.

² He that walketh in his uprightness feareth the LORD: but he that is perverse in his ways despiseth him.

³ Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and will shew thee great things, and difficult, which thou knowest not.

⁷ But as for me, I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

²⁹ And they plaited a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

⁴⁰ And they laughed him to scorn. But he, having put them all forth, taketh the father of the child and her mother and them that were with him, and goeth in where the child was.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all these things; and they scoffed at him.

³² Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, We will hear thee concerning this yet again.

³⁶ and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

³⁵ Vengeance is mine, and recompence, At the time when their foot shall slide: For the day of their calamity is at hand, And the things that are to come upon them shall make haste.

⁵ Doth the wild ass bray when he hath grass? or loweth the ox over his fodder?

⁴ I also could speak as ye do; if your soul were in my soul’s stead, I could join words together against you, and shake mine head at you.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine.

⁵ My steps have held fast to thy paths, my feet have not slipped.

¹⁸ When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt. ⁴ Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains; and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness.

¹ Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and to them that are secure in the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel come! ² Pass ye unto Calneh, and see; and from thence go ye to Hamath the great: then go down to Gath of the Philistines: be they better than these kingdoms? or is their border greater than your border? ³ Ye that put far away the evil day, and cause the seat of violence to come near; ⁴ that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; ⁵ that sing idle songs to the sound of the viol; that devise for themselves instruments of music, like David; ⁶ that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day: ²⁰ and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if [it be] not [he], who then is it?

⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, wax mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established with them in their sight, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. ¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the pipe. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, and in a moment they go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ Yet they said unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

¹⁸ Yet he fired their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁴ From men, by thy hand, O LORD, from men of the world, whose portion is in [this] life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy treasure: they are satisfied with children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

¹ [A Psalm] of David. Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious against them that work unrighteousness.

³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green tree in its native soil.

¹¹ And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the Most High? ¹² Behold, these are the wicked; and, being alway at ease, they increase in riches.

²⁷ As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they are become great, and waxen rich.

²⁹ Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens? ³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

³ The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib: [but] Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

⁷ Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the swallow and the crane observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the ordinance of the LORD.

¹⁷ and thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. ¹⁸ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as at this day.

⁷ The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, he also lifteth up.

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?

²⁰ that they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

⁵ I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the face of the earth, by my great power and by my outstretched arm; and I give it unto whom it seemeth right unto me. ⁶ And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field also have I given him to serve him.

¹⁸ O thou king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty:

¹⁷ Now therefore, O our God, hearken unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.

³⁵ And when the townclerk had quieted the multitude, he saith, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there who knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is temple-keeper of the great Diana, and of the [image] which fell down from Jupiter?

³⁶ For of him, and through him, and unto him, are all things. To him [be] the glory for ever. Amen.

⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world [to be] rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him? ⁶ But ye have dishonoured the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats? ⁷ Do not they blaspheme the honourable name by the which ye are called?

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

¹⁷ And I, behold, I do bring the flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; every thing that is in the earth shall die.

²² And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?

³ (For my life is yet whole in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils;)

⁴ The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty giveth me life.

¹⁴ If he set his heart upon man, [if] he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; ¹⁵ All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.

²⁹ Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled; thou takest away their breath they die, and return to their dust.

³ Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help. ⁴ His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

²⁵ neither is he served by men’s hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁸ for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? cannot my taste discern mischievous things?

³ For the ear trieth words, as the palate tasteth meat.

¹⁵ I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.

¹⁰ so that ye may approve the things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and void of offence unto the day of Christ;

¹⁴ But solid food is for fullgrown men, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern good and evil.

³ if ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious:

⁸ For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out:

¹⁰ With us are both the grayheaded and the very aged men, much elder than thy father.

⁷ I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

⁴ [He is] wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?

¹⁶ With him is strength and effectual working; the deceived and the deceiver are his.

²⁰ Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? ²¹ Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. ²² Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumour thereof with our ears. ²³ God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. ²⁴ For he looketh to the ends of the earth, and seeth under the whole heaven; ²⁵ To make a weight for the wind; yea, he meteth out the waters by measure. ²⁶ When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: ²⁷ Then did he see it, and declare it; he established it, yea, and searched it out. ²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I held back, and durst not shew you mine opinion. ⁷ I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom. ⁸ But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty giveth them understanding. ⁹ It is not the great that are wise, nor the aged that understand judgment.

⁵ Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength of understanding.

³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the mind?

⁵ Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; his understanding is infinite.

⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom; out of his mouth [cometh] knowledge and understanding: ⁷ He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright, [he is] a shield to them that walk in integrity;

¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge: I am understanding; I have might.

¹³ Who hath directed the spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him? ¹⁴ With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not [yet] done; saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

¹² He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens:

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

¹⁵ for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to gainsay.

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

²⁴ but unto them that are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

⁸ which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

¹¹ in whom also we were made a heritage, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his will;

³ in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.

⁵ But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

⁴⁶ This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from off thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel:

¹⁸ And thou hast declared this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me up into thine hand, thou killedst me not.

⁸ Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered up thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not smite him the second time.

¹² Behold, he seizeth [the prey], who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou? ¹³ God will not withdraw his anger; the helpers of Rahab do stoop under him.

¹⁰ If he pass through, and shut up, and call unto judgment, then who can hinder him?

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly, and casteth me into the hands of the wicked.

¹⁰ He hath broken me down on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he plucked up like a tree.

⁷ He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men whom he hath made may know [it].

²³ I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.

²² And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

² For thou hast made of a city an heap; of a defenced city a ruin: a palace of strangers to be no city; it shall never be built.

⁵⁸ Thus saith the LORD of hosts: The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly overthrown, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the peoples shall labour for vanity, and the nations for the fire; and they shall be weary.

⁶⁴ and thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise again because of the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

⁴ Whereas Edom saith, We are beaten down, but we will return and build the waste places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down: and men shall call them The border of wickedness, and The people against whom the LORD hath indignation for ever.

³² For God hath shut up all unto disobedience, that he might have mercy upon all.

⁷ And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and none shall shut, and that shutteth, and none openeth:

¹³ And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

¹¹ In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

¹⁷ and the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.

³⁵ When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou dost afflict them: ³⁶ then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou teachest them the good way wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the sojourners of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD, the God of Israel, liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

⁷ At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away; ⁸ They went up by the mountains, they went down by the valleys, unto the place which thou hadst founded for them. ⁹ Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.

²² Are there any among the vanities of the heathen that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee; for thou hast made all these things.

⁸ [seek him] that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth; the LORD is his name;

⁴ He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.

²⁵ But of a truth I say unto you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land;

¹⁷ Elijah was a man of like passions with us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain; and it rained not on the earth for three years and six months. ¹⁸ And he prayed again; and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

⁶ These have the power to shut the heaven, that it rain not during the days of their prophecy: and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to smite the earth with every plague, as often as they shall desire.

²² And the LORD said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt entice him, and shalt prevail also: go forth, and do so. ²³ Now therefore, behold, the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets; and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee.

¹³ With him is wisdom and might; he hath counsel and understanding.

⁷ Will ye speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him?

⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? or as one deceiveth a man, will ye deceive him?

⁹ And if the prophet be deceived and speaketh a word, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.

¹³ And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil [one].

³¹ And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

¹⁴ And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

²³ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home, unto his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

¹⁴ With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built up waste places for themselves;

¹² Where then are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now; and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed concerning Egypt. ¹³ The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have caused Egypt to go astray, that are the corner stone of her tribes. ¹⁴ The LORD hath mingled a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her: and they have caused Egypt to go astray in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

¹⁴ therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder: and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

¹⁹ For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And the prudence of the prudent will I reject. ²⁰ Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

¹¹ Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host of the king of Assyria, which took Manasseh in chains, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon. ¹² And when he was in distress, he besought the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ And he prayed unto him; and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God. ¹⁴ Now after this he built an outer wall to the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley, even to the entering in at the fish gate; and he compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height: and he put valiant captains in all the fenced cities of Judah.

¹⁶ O LORD, truly I am thy servant: I am thy servant, the son of thine handmaid; thou hast loosed my bonds.

³¹ And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the [first] year of his reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison; ³² and he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon. ³³ and he changed his prison garments, and did eat bread before him continually all the days of his life. ³⁴ and for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him of the king of Babylon, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.

²¹ And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

¹⁶ And he hath on his garment and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

²⁴ And it came to pass, when they brought forth those kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said unto the chiefs of the men of war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

⁴² And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel.

⁴⁵ Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a javelin: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, which thou hast defied. ⁴⁶ This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from off thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel:

²² He draweth away the mighty also by his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.

²⁸ So that they caused the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heard the cry of the afflicted.

⁹ By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out; they cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.

³⁶ And the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. ³⁷ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. ³⁸ And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.

¹ Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him, and I will loose the loins of kings; to open the doors before him, and the gates shall not be shut;

¹⁴ These shall war against the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they [also shall overcome] that are with him, called and chosen and faithful.

¹⁹ And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat upon the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought the signs in his sight, wherewith he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image: they twain were cast alive into the lake of fire that burneth with brimstone: ²¹ and the rest were killed with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, [even the sword] which came forth out of his mouth: and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

²⁴ He taketh away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.

⁹ It is not the great that are wise, nor the aged that understand judgment.

¹⁷ Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but the foolish die for lack of understanding.

¹⁹ The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

²² Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

¹ For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah stay and staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water; ² the mighty man, and the man of war; the judge, and the prophet, and the diviner, and the ancient; ³ the captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the skilful enchanter.

² And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:

²⁴ And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

²³ And of Jezebel also spake the LORD, saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel. ²⁴ Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat.

²⁶ Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the LORD; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith the LORD. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat [of ground], according to the word of the LORD.

³⁴ And when he was come in, he did eat and drink; and he said, See now to this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king’s daughter. ³⁵ And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands. ³⁶ Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall the dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel: ³⁷ and the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

⁴⁰ He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the waste, where there is no way.

²⁷ None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the girdle of their loins be loosed, nor the latchet of their shoes be broken:

⁵ And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

²¹ and I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.

⁹ The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

²¹ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. ²² And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

³⁸ And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.

²¹ And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: ²² he revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

³² and thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. ³³ The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles’ [feathers], and his nails like birds’ [claws].

¹² And being warned [of God] in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. ¹³ Now when they were departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I tell thee: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

¹⁰ Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

¹⁴ Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

¹² And one of his servants said, Nay, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it for their own; let a cloud dwell upon it; let all that maketh black the day terrify it.

¹⁷ For the morning is to all of them as the shadow of death; for they know the terrors of the shadow of death.

²⁰ Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? ²¹ Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. ²² Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumour thereof with our ears. ²³ God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.

²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

¹² Even the darkness hideth not from thee, but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike [to thee].

²² he revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²⁶ Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

⁷⁹ To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace.

¹⁰ But unto us God revealed [them] through the Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

⁷ And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

²⁰ And God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

³⁸ He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and he suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

³ Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

¹⁵ Thou hast increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased the nation; thou art glorified: thou hast enlarged all the borders of the land.

⁶ In days to come shall Jacob take root; Israel shall blossom and bud: and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit.

² Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him, and made him many.

²² The little one shall become a thousand, and the small one a strong nation: I the LORD will hasten it in its time.

¹⁹ And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.

²² As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured; so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.

⁸ I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.

²⁰ He removeth the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the elders.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way; they found no city of habitation.

⁹ And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. ¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn again, and be healed.

¹ The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and cometh unto Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it.

¹⁶ let his heart be changed from man’s and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.

³³ The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles’ [feathers], and his nails like birds’ [claws].

¹¹ And Ephraim is like a silly dove, without understanding: they call unto Egypt, they go to Assyria.

¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

²⁹ and thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled alway, and there shall be none to save thee.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at noonday as in the night.

²⁷ They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.

¹⁴ The LORD hath mingled a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her: and they have caused Egypt to go astray in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

²⁰ The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall be moved to and fro like a hut; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.

¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind, yea, we grope as they that have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among them that are lusty we are as dead men.

¹¹ And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

¹¹ But he that hateth his brother is in the darkness, and walketh in the darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because the darkness hath blinded his eyes.
